letter from the editor I never imagined in my early thirties celebrating the 1st Birthday of a magazine before that of a first child. And, for that matter, having nine children over a one-year span, which some people have compared. To these people: thank you for the acknowledgment, it has been A LOT of work, and very rewarding. But I imagine the real deal will be much more significant. The idea for the magazine first came to me in Spring 2012. I worked full-time as Fund Development & Communications Manager at Victoria Women’s Transition House for four years at the time, and nine years in the field. My first degree was in Non-Fiction Writing/Journalism & Publishing, followed by a degree in Political Science with a focus on International Politics & Economy. So naturally, writing, fiscal responsibility, and helping others came easily, while so did learning to navigate on a budget from many years in school and from my family of six. With this life change from permanent employee to entrepreneur, I truly live the magazine concept day in and day out, but I would not change a thing! Thank you to everyone who participates, our readers, the hundreds of advertisers, my family and friends!

Victoria Almost Free Magazine turns 1 on July 1st!

Tell me the last time the perfect summer travel location, which offered everything your heart desires, jumped into mind? And it was right in our B.C. backyard and possible on a budget. Until not too long ago I knew Squamish as the place a friend grew up in and a town on the way to Whistler. Now I know Squamish as my home away from home, and I wonder, how I could be so naive to not know more about this stunning place. Known as Canada’s Recreation Capital of Canada, Squamish celebrates adventure and much, much more. When I visited last while recovering from a bad fastball injury, hay fever, and another allergic reaction, I still managed to soak in the fun! Is hiking your forte? Discover hundreds of kilometers of terrain for all abilities, surrounded by striking scenery, and you must try the Stawamus Chief, Canada’s only Monolith. The Stawamus Chief soars 700 m (2,297 ft) above the waters of nearby Howe Sound. Not necessarily for the faint of heights, this 1.5 hour steep stair-cased trek encounters Shannon Falls in all its beauty and sound, the shadows of the always mysterious forest and a view like few ever get to see. So now you know I love to hike, but what else will you find here? We took in the Saturday summer farmer’s market downtown in all its creativity. I bought cabbage rolls, right after a hearty breakfast at Big D’s, I found root chips, gluten-free chocolate zucchini bread, local honey, pie pockets, soy candles, gorgeous and functional birch cutting boards, and someone stopped me from buying the Pad Thai from the local Thai food truck parked nearby.

VictoriaAlmostFree.com | JUNE/JULY 2013

A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, such as some mountains, or a single large piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument or building. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are most often made of very hard and solid metamorphic or igneous rock. On my next trip to Squamish Executive Suites Resort & Hotel to stay & play, I am planning to: Try White Water Rafting Go Horseback Riding Brave Zip lining Get an In-Room Massage from Living Well Spa Services at Executive Suites Hike the Stawamus Chief Twice Sun Myself at Alice Lake Prepare Some Meals with Ingredients from the Summer Farmer’s Market Try a New-to-Me Restaurant Discover other dishes at The Living Room Restaurant & Lounge at Executive Suites And one day I might even fearlessly try mountain biking, kayaking, and rock climbing. In the winter months I will venture to see the bald eagles in Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park, which has the world’s most concentrated number of bald eagles, and also drive up to Whistler for snowboarding. Doing this trip on a budget? There are many accommodations for all budgets, like great prices on One and Two-Bedroom Suites that include full kitchens at the Executive Suites Resort & Hotel. Or consider camping at Alice Falls or at the foot of the Stawamus Chief, or many other hotels in the area. • • • •

FROM ‘THE HOME’

TO OUR HOME 120 YEARS IN THE TAYLOR BUILDING

When an organization is entrusted with the stewardship of a grand building such as our heritage home The Taylor Building, there are considerations of care that go beyond just the building’s use. The Taylor Building was built in 1893 as the home of the BC Protestant Orphans’ Home. This beauty is designated on the exterior as a heritage building and rightfully so. The heart of our services since 1893, the Taylor Building has housed over 1,500 children, sheltered 35 years of child care services, provided emergency shelter for homeless families, and now provides a gracious retirement for our seniors and the administrative heart of

a wide-spread organization. The Taylor Building exterior is undergoing some much needed and costly upgrades. After 120 years of service, the roof had given all it had, and good stewardship required immediate action. Work began in September 2012 on part 1 of what will be a four-year undertaking, replacing 25% of the roof each year. Based on the service of the previous roof, we expect to get another 100 years out of this investment. This building is a gift, it is a symbol, it is history. It is home to over eighty seniors and it is headquarters to the work of The Cridge – reaching thousands of people in need each year.

Writing is one of my absolute favourite things yet I found myself procrastinating to sit down and write this article on self-sabotage. Well, that’s interesting. It seems that even though I am aware of self-sabotage I still practice it as a familiar standby position knowing (on some level) that if I wait long enough, I will have to rush to write this article, feel stressed, alleviate that stress with food, and then feel unhappy with myself for procrastinating and over-indulging. I have repeated this behavior in different areas of my life often enough that the behavior has now turned into a pattern. If I continue down this path, the pattern will have become my life. Not exactly the legacy I have been dreaming of! One of the first steps to stopping self-sabotage is to recognize the patterns and/or areas of your life you are sabotaging. For example, let’s say you want to lose 20 pounds. You wake up, look in the bathroom mirror and say to yourself: ‘Listen here you fat slob, don’t screw it up again today. Surely you must have some will power, quit being so weak and lose some weight. I can’t believe how much you have let yourself go.’ By Monday afternoon at 3, you give into to the sugar craving and vow to start dieting again tomorrow (but since you already blew it for today, you might as well have a high calorie supper and evening snacks). By the time you go to bed that night you have a long list of reasons to beat yourself up with self-criticism and self-loathing. Tuesday morning arrives with the realization that you have too many social engagements, favorite TV shows, and too much stress to diet this week anyways...but next Monday, for sure, you are going to start eating healthy and exercising. For real.

One of the first steps to stopping selfsabotage is to recognise the patterns and/ or areas of your life you are sabotaging. Now imagine the same scenario but with self-love replacing self-sabotage. You wake up in the morning, smile at yourself in the bathroom mirror knowing that you love yourself exactly as you are. You lovingly get ready for your day, choosing clothes you feel good in, and packing a lunch that honours your body for taking such good care of you. By 3 that afternoon, you start to think about having something sweet and lovingly feed your body nourishing food. You are radiant, loving to yourself and others, and exude gratitude for all of the goodness in your life, acting as if you are in optimum mental and physical health right now. That night as you go to bed you think about your amazing life and mentally prepare yourself to have an awesome day tomorrow too. Do you still make mistakes? Of course you do, and you recognize Victoria’s FREE coupon and affordable living magazine

the issues, and let them go, knowing that everything will always work out to your highest good. The scenario I used as an example can be used in every area of your life where you recognize self-sabotage. Some common areas are in the workplace, your relationships, financial well-being, your physical, mental and spiritual health as well as your overall attitude towards others. If you are living in a low vibration in these areas of your life, you are likely not only sabotaging yourself, but the people around you as well. Today is the day to be brutally honest with yourself and identify your authentic self. Then honour yourself by acting in your own best interest every day. There is nothing selfish about this because the more you grow the more you will unconsciously give others the permission to do the same. As you identify the patterns in your life that are holding you in a lower vibration,

50 may be the new 40, but that doesn’t mean you should dress like you're 20!!! So many women come to my shop confused about what they ‘should’ be wearing, not wanting to look like they are trying too hard, but committed to NOT looking like their mom! (no offense, Mom…things have changed!) Even if you haven’t gained a pound since high school I guarantee that nothing is in the same place anymore…but you don’t have to dress YOUNG, you need to dress GREAT! This is the time to embrace the body you have and exploit the very best of it! Look for clothing that fits properly, using the services of a well trained seamstress to make necessary adjustments. Take a girlfriend out shopping and don’t stop until you find a great fitting pair of jeans! And while you are at it get a professional bra fitting, it’s amazing how many women are in the wrong size bra! If you are going to expose your cleavage keep in mind that it’s best to keep the rest under wraps. Same for the legs… when they are out on the town the girls should stay in where it’s warm! Want to stay trendy but not look like you are trying too hard? Keep your heel height at 3” or less and your skirt length just above the knee. If your closet has more that 30% “trend” pieces you may be trying too hard, but if you have all “classic” pieces you may need to add some punch. Get out those magazines and find some updated looks that make you smile! And finally see a professional about a new hairstyle, or color update! Remember: you have earned every love handle, crows feet and gray hair that you have, be proud of who you are and let your confidence be your fashion statement! NOTE: Experienced stylists at Baja Rosi’s are on staff to help you find the right look, free of charge. Call ahead if you would like to book a “one-on-one” time for a special occasion or lifestyle change!

observe them and make a decision to let them go. Then carry on with your life while holding your highest intention. It is completely acceptable to be your own best friend and show yourself with the same love you would show a friend. Let go of all self-judgement, and stop comparing your darkest secrets to the brightest moments of others. When you decide to release all selfsabotage procrastination will fall away. Your actions will open doors for you to help you achieve your dreams, so make sure you are taking action daily. You are ready to become what you aspire to become. Any self-doubt that comes along is from your lower ego and not from your highest self; when you identify it immediately let it go. It is a lifelong journey to stay connected to your higher self and to release ego driven thoughts and actions which are always fed by fear and insecurity. Over time you will see this journey is one of the most

abundant blessings in your life. Switching your perspective is not always easy but it is achievable. To help do this develop a daily practice which includes using positive and kind thoughts when thinking and speaking about yourself and others, feed your mind and soul with motivational books, positive affirmations and uplifting quotes. Finally, make time daily for a spiritual connection whether that is prayer, meditation, connecting with nature or in any way that resonates with you. You can trust yourself now more than ever. tips

Hydration & Exercise

Are you Getting Enough? BY LOUISE HODGSON-JONES

There are many experts out there who calculate that we should

DRINK

1L 66lbs OF BODY WEIGHT

It is summer and that means getting outdoors and enjoying the sun and fresh air, and enjoying our favourite activities. It also means ensuring we are adequately hydrated. Don’t get me wrong, hydration is a yearround necessity, even in the depths of winter we need to replenish our stores but it is doubly more important in the summer.

What many don’t realize is hydrating is just as important before exercise as it us during and after. Sipping water during the day should be part of your daily routine. If you keep a glass or cup of water at your desk or favourite chair and top it up during the day, you would be amazed how much you will drink, without really trying. If you work in an air-conditioned office it may be easy not to drink as you probably don’t feel thirsty, but air conditioning can have a dehydrating effect on the body during the course of eight hours, so sipping some H²O is very important. So how much should we drink on a daily basis? That depends on many factors – body weight, metabolism, lifestyle (sedentary or active) and exercise (type and duration). There are many experts out there who calculate that we should drink a litre of water per 30kg or 66Ibs of body weight. So a 132Ib person should drink 2.5 litres and a 154Ib person – 2.9 litres. And this should be more when exercising, particularly on a hot day. If you would like to add some flavour to your water then there is a myriad of sports drinks on the market. When running, cycling or walking for less than an hour, water is quite adequate for replenishing lost fluids, but for an activity of an hour or more a sport drink

with electrolytes should be considered. Most supermarkets and running stores carry a selection – often with many flavours. Many of us have our favourites, but if you are new to sport drinks then you may want to buy a small packet or bottle and do your own taste test. For powdered products there are mixing instructions but it is best to experiment to see what works for you. Too much powder may leave an aftertaste in your mouth and too little won’t have any benefit. So try them out on a ride or run until you have found the right balance. While adequate hydration is important, over hydration can be deadly. Hypotremia is the condition when you drink too much and cause water intoxication. There have been marathoners who have died from this when they haven’t taken in enough fluid during the race, and subsequently drunk too much too quickly afterwards. Sipping water with an electrolyte during activity will prevent that craving for a drink afterwards. So the tip here is to keep that favourite water bottle topped up during the day – that way you resist the urge to binge drink when you really get thirsty. And go out and experiment with some of the sport drinks on the market until you find your favourite.

Why are you running? I am running my second, full-length Marathon, this October. I didn't think that I would race this distance again because half-way through last year's race, besides feeling tired - I felt slightly foolish and self-centered. I wasn't raising awareness or funds for a deserving cause, I wasn't part of any team and I sure as heck wasn't racing towards a victory. Besides being happy to finish the race for myself I knew that if I was to ever run that far again, it would be as an ambassador for something. It is a great honour to announce that that wonderful something is the Lifetime Networks Cruisers team! Their mandate is to build and maintain lifetime friendships and relationships to support those with disabilities. I can't think of any better reason or greater motivation to run. Please help me in supporting this charity by pledging a donation today.

Run to make a difference,

Thanks and happy trails!

How to: Buy Art

PART 2

Art Galleries: What Are They For? BY JENNY HAINSWORTH In the last issue of Victoria Almost Free, we looked at the basic idea that collecting art means collecting originals—works that are physically made by the artist. We also talked about respect for art criticism as the necessary starting point for the aspiring collector. Why do we need art criticism? Why do we need to analyze art at all? Isn’t it all equally valid, because it’s self-expression? Well, yes and no. Truly bad art is everywhere. You are 962 times more likely to encounter bad art in the course of a day than good art. I just made that statistic up, but still—a lot of stuff is hanging on a lot of walls, and most of it is awful. Why is this? Are we, as a species, getting worse at making art? Have we corrupted it beyond recognition? Some would say so, and those people are called curmudgeons and they have no idea what they’re talking about, so don’t listen to them. Bad art has always been with us for the excellent reason that, like a horrible casserole, it’s very easy to make. To make good art, on the other hand— to create an image or object that has aesthetic merit, technical perfection and intellectual weight—is extremely difficult. Depending on the context, the distinction between good and bad art may or may not matter. Perhaps the artist is painting purely for joy, or self-expression, or to build her skills. Or the buyer “just likes it” – it makes him happy when he looks at it. In these cases, it doesn’t matter whether the art is significant to the art world (it’s not). But if we are talking about art as a contribution to culture or as a financial investment, then the distinction is extremely important. Except in the very rarest circumstances, you will not find art of any significance outside of two places: the artist’s studio, and a reputable gallery or auction house. I don’t know anything about wine, so I can taste a fine vintage and not really know why it’s better than a nine dollar bottle of plonk. But that’s because I am measurably stupid about wine. The trouble with art is that everyone thinks their opinion about it is valid, even if they are completely uneducated. Is it possible to be a dork about it? Yes. Can you be less of a dork about it? Absolutely. This is where art galleries come in.

Art galleries are not just buildings with track lighting and Renoir mugs for sale. They have curators – professionals entrusted with building their art collections. Like a sommelier, a good curator is both highly educated and possessed of an exceptional sensitivity. It is because galleries have curators that buyers can have confidence that the art is worth buying – or at least worth knowing about. There are essentially two kinds of galleries: the public gallery and the commercial gallery. Usually, if you want to learn about art, you visit a public gallery, and if you want to buy art, you visit a commercial gallery. A public gallery houses collections that have historical or academic significance. These collections may be permanent – they “live” in the building, or visiting – borrowed from other museums and galleries around the world. Some examples of public galleries in Victoria are the Maltwood Gallery at the University of Victoria, the Legacy Gallery downtown, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The primary purpose of a public gallery is to enable people to view art treasures. The commercial gallery is one whose purpose is making money from the trade of art; essentially it is an art store. Contrary to popular romanticism, there is nothing wrong with the business of art or with dealing art in order to make a profit. We love Vincent Van Gogh, but we should also admire his brother Theo, whose career as an art dealer helped sustain and support Vincent’s work. Art for art’s sake and art as investment are different branches of the same tree, not mutually exclusive phenomena. Examples of good commercial galleries in Victoria include the Winchester Galleries, Madrona Gallery, and Dales Gallery. Commercial galleries break down further into those that represent established artists (Winchester) and those that feature emerging artists (Dales). A further type of gallery that does not quite fit the public or commercial gallery profile is the artist-run gallery. This may be a gallery that operates out of an individual artist’s home studio, or part of an artist’s cooperative. While some excellent art can be found in these places, it is by no means

guaranteed, because here the proprietor’s interest is purely the promotion and sale of their own work. Which may be really bad. There are, of course, establishments that display and sell art, but are not galleries. These may include cafés, restaurants, bookstores, gift shops, frame shops, and the like. Lacking a trained curator, these sources of art are, again, unreliable, since the art is chosen according to the owner’s particular taste. Which may be really bad. Can you see my point? It’s not that good art can’t be found outside a gallery. It’s just that it is not very likely, and if you are new to the game, you won’t be able to tell the difference. Get over the intimidation that galleries can sometimes inspire, and go inside! Talk to the staff, the curator, the owner and the artists, if they are present. Ask them questions! Make mistakes! Drink any free wine you can find! Not too much! Above all, enjoy the art and don’t worry too much about figuring out what it means. Try to let it wash over you as though you just arrived on this planet with no attitude or preconceived notions. But do this in a gallery, where your efforts are less likely to be wasted. In Part 3 we will play curator and discuss some indicators in a work of art, such as materials, subject and presentation, that tell you that it’s good – or otherwise! Jenny Hainsworth is an artist and musician living in Victoria with her geranium Henri. You can see some of her art at www. rabbitinthedirt.wordpress.com as well as on posters about town for the stunning choral group Ensemble Laude, and at Full Circle Studio Arts.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PICTORIAL

GORDON HEAD

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAYNE KAYE

Gordon Head boasts a beauty that few Canadian residential neighbourhoods can. This seaside area includes Arbutus Cove Park and Holleydene, a partly sandy beach with breathtaking views, parts of University of Victoria, and Mount Doug Park, which on May 22, 2013 was reclaimed as Pkols by First Nations people. Gordon Head lies north of McKenzie Avenue, east of Blenkinsop, and west of Finnerty Road. This summer, enjoy this backyard of our city with a hike, bike ride, beach picnic, or kayaking afternoon.

Shayne Kaye

About six years ago, Shayne, out of nowhere, thought, “I wonder if I’d like photography.” He’s been hooked ever since. His usual subjects include wildlife, travel, and general walkabout photography, with a healthy dose of concert shooting on the side. Whenever possible, he likes to try and show a different perspective of everyday things and enjoys the challenge of finding a new way to show a common subject. From stormy nights in

CHARITY call

call to action

to action

In this beautiful community we live in, there are thousands of “subcommunities of non-profits inspired by the things many of us take for granted each and every day. Like food, friendships, safety, employment, and hope for the future. But somehow, the very inspiration of what is not is the same inspiration that makes it possible to share in the journey of someone else, because of the stories we hear and the people we meet.

This summer, share YOUR journey by reaching out to a local charity, such as one of these. There are many ways to help: plan or attend an event, become a monthly donor, volunteer, learn about their programs, tell someone else who could benefit.

THE LIVING ROOM

at Cabin 12

It’s not what you expect. You walk into a restaurant and find a living room. But, hey, this is the Cabin.

They are also offering BACON AND EGGS for $5, Monday -Friday, 9AM-11AM for the rest of the summer.

Cabin 12 is known for good comfort food and a casual, neighbourhoody vibe. Seems to be working: the restaurant is ranked the #1 restaurant in Oaklands by FoodPages.ca. It’s partly by design – simple, hearty food, done well. And it is partly organic -- like the living room that just happened. When the Cabin first opened downtown there was this awkward stage/boxing ring in one corner. We couldn’t put tables and chairs on it. Imagine pushing your chair back after lunch and going straight off the edge. Over time, it became home to a couch and coffee table, a toy box and a couple of arm chairs. Parents would settle in with their young kids, students would set up with their laptops and books. It got lived in. Took on

a life of its own. And we came to know it as ‘the living room’. Three years on, the building was slated for demolition and we moved to Cedar Hill Road. We left the raised stage, but brought the living room furniture with us. These days it is a place where neighbours meet over coffee and working folk take their breaks. It is a spot to wait for a table on busy weekends. Students, authors and toddlers come and go. People eat. Community thrives. We’re pretty happy with it.

Cabin 12’s living room is at 3111 Cedar Hill Road, as is the rest of the restaurant. Phone: 250-590-1500

Come in and experience ALL our delicious menu items! …and spin a few records while you enjoy your meal.

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 8AM-3PM, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FOR BREAKFAST, BRUNCH AND LUNCH 5PM-9:30PM MONDAY TO SATURDAY FOR DINNER AND DESSERT | CLOSED SUNDAY EVENING SUNDAY 8AM-3PM WE ARE THE BRUNCH PLACE TO BE!
