My name is Vicente Quintana and I am an Industrial Designer from Chile.

My project as a designer, is to be able to achieve an expertise in industrial production processes, such as materialities, and creative logics.

With this, we can generate sustainable design projects maintaining a level of production that can generate a contribution in the life of the users.

Defining the problem to be solved Living spaces in Santiago are getting smaller and smaller. According to the INE (National Institute of Statistics of Chile) in 5 years, the sale of houses was reduced and the rent of apartments increased by 50%.

This rapid change has not yet been internalized by the furniture market and there is no offer for the equipment of smaller spaces. By taking advantage of this opportunity we developed Pongo Muebles.

Describing the solution Pongo Muebles (Pongo Furniture) is a furniture project for small spaces, developed in a small-scale production. We formed a society (Lorenzo Vega, Cristian Seno and Vicente Quintana), with a young and multidisciplinary team, which took industrial design as its main focus.

Pongo is an enterprise that works through the internet and social networks, allowing us to maximize returns and keep prices low.

The product: RTA Assembled furniture for small spaces.

It was sought to model small pieces of furniture with a few pieces, which occupy the minimum space, but still fully fulfill their functionality.

Each piece of furniture offers a unique way of use that differs from its original typology. We are looking for a exlusive look based on Japanese minimalism. The objective was to produce the cheapest and most accessible furniture in the world of Chilean design.

The process implemented We start the design by analyzing the materials; systems and production costs, which were available and adapted to our possibilities. We chose fitting systems and assemblies in plywood furniture, which allowed us to manufacture furniture in CNC Router. By this way, we manage to manufacture and prototype freely. Once the production system was defined, we compared our first prototypes with the best-selling products on the furniture market. Thus, we arrived at a series of designs of traditional typologies, adapted to our systems and materials, which included desks, night tables, coffee tables, floors, chairs and shelves.

With the first prototypes we carry out a focus group, to test the assembly difficulties for the client. With the feedback given by possible users, we produce videos and assembly manuals to facilitate its use.

Finally, we start the sales process. In the first stage, we launched three products, with different price levels, to measure market interest. The results showed that the preferences of the customers were concentrated in the small and medium scale (flowerpots and coffee tables), mainly decorative products. The products of scale and higher price (shelves, desks, armchairs) were less valued. With this information, we redefine our following products, focusing on the decoration of spaces. These products were the ones with the highest number of sales.

Defining the problem to be solved

Describing the solution

The efficient installation of emergency housing is key for a country like Chile, with a high seismic activity and the frequent occurrence of natural disasters. There is a need for safe and sturdy structures for people in need of a post-disaster transitional home. Despite this, there is a deficiency in the assembly and installation of these emergency houses.

The project proposes a tool that facilitates the level and poise of base columns of prefabricated houses, simultaneously, so that nonprofessional builders can carry out this task easily.

According to the information provided by Fundación Vivienda -the main nonprofit institution that manufactures emergency houses in Chile-, 40% of the houses assembled by volunteers have faults that make it impossible to use them. The problem lies in the lack of skills of the volunteers to correctly install the structural columns.

In addition to meeting a need for voluntary nonprofit organizations, the proposed tool has the potential to be a market option for private manufactured home construction.

The process implemented After conducting an investigation that made it possible to identify where the main problems in the assembly of emergency housing lay, we worked on a first alternative solution: replacing the basic structural columns with an alternative system of pillars that would eliminate the leveling task, which is where the main mistakes are made.

This idea was rejected for two reasons: first, it implied an additional cost, which increased the value of the emergency solution, and second, it implied logistical challenges that made it more complex and delayed the capacity to respond to the emergency.

In this way, we proceeded to work on a second alternative.

A new Idea I developed a hands on system to help level and distance structucture objetcts.

This new system was tested with expert professionals and inexperienced volunteers, demonstrating its effectiveness and usefulness.

SPIRIT LEVEL IN 3 DIMENSIONS

Thesis Project Final Design

NIVEL 3 (third level) is a tool that allows the user to correctly structure vertical elements. This tool uses 3 systems to ensure correct leveling and poise in a construction.

The first system is a bubble level to ensure that the first item is vertical. The second system consist in a mobile spirit level to contrast the heights between vertical elements. Finally, there is a third system configurated by a rope mechanism that allows the user to confirm that the structural elements are installed at 90 degrees to each other.

Defining the problem to be solved This project was developed for COMBEPLAST, a company that promotes circular economy through innovation in plastic. The challenge presented by COMBERPLAST was to develop a new low-cost, massconsumption product made with recycled plastic.

The plant absorbs the water from the dirt only when it needs it, the ground absorbs the water from the cable.

Describing the solution

This is the entrance of water, goes directly in to the storage section.

Self-watering planter that seeks to show the world of recycled plastic and bring it within reach of the customer. The goal is for the user to come into contact with this product to promote the durability and reach of the material.

The project contemplates being manufactured with a single plastic injection mold to be able to manufacture it in a massive way, thus making it a low-cost and high-scope product.

Results Different irrigation alternatives were tested, previously consulted with agronomists. The selected option was a capillary irrigation system with a cord which has the benefits of not consuming energy, is water efficient and guarantees the water supply that the plant needs. It consists of a 3-level absorption system (L1. Rope; L2. Soil and L3. plant) that regulates the amount of water absorbed by the soil, avoiding drowning the plant.

The “cable” works with any absorbing material that can drive water from the storage.

Water storage compartment. This section has no entrance for sunlight to prevent the growth of bacteria.

The idea behind REEBOST is to reduce the amount of fruit dropped by spoilage, specially from students. After interviewing a series of independent students in Santiago, we realize that students either not buy fruit because it spoils to quickly to eat it, or they buy fruit but they don’t eat for the same reason. A common problem of their fruit consumption is that their storage of fruit is hidden in the fridge so they usually forget about it.

REEBOST is a DIY (do it yourself) method that allows you to create a vase that reduces the PH balance of environment allowing some fruit to last longer, and to store it in plane sight.

The method is to create a vase that is made from 50% from plain flour and 50% salt. The project concludes with a website and an instruction video.

Initial concepts for the proyect.

DIY Explanation system For explaining the system we designed a website that would explain in a step by step way, the use production of this object, so the user could make this without any previous experience. A video was added so the user could share this proyect.

The original concepts of this project, involved the use of different conservation techniques like lacto-fermentation and sun drying.

Other ideas involved incorporating salt or other drying materials to some structural materials like concrete.

URBAN MANTAINERS ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH Internship Defining the problem to be solved The Municipality of Providencia established a collaboration agreement with the Diego Portales University, to redesign the uniforms of the maintenance workers that the Municipality employs to work on the streets, since there were many complaints of the discomfort that their use means. The new design, even though they were more aesthetically attractive models and met the required occupational safety standards, were resisted by urban collectors, who preferred to continue wearing the old uniform.

The cause of this disconnect between the demands of a new uniform and the dissatisfaction with the new prototypes originated in the lack of participation of the collectors in the new model. Indeed, the prototypes were designed without considering climatic variability, practical needs, and practical ergonomic design.

Describing the solution Based on this initial failure, it was decided to carry out an investigation that allows a comprehensive characterization of the profile and needs of urban collectors in the Providencia Municipality.

Research methodology Several methodological tools were combined: 43 in-depth interviews with urban collectors.

Exploration with supervisors: The work space of the urban maintainers was visited, observing all the routines and worker-supervisor interactions.

Participant observation. The experience was developed in four days of work as an urban maintainer.

Learnings and lessons The profile of the urban collector is characterized by a very low socioeconomic level, which worsens the bigger the number of members of the family group; they are usually the only family supporter; they often live in peripheral communes to the city of Santiago and a significant proportion are recent immigrants -mainly Haitians-.

The most vulnerable situations are observed in the case of women collectors and immigrants who do not speak Spanish, who tend to present, on average, lower quality of life indicators.

The research allowed us to identify important factors of discrimination that affect the collectors, both within the Municipality of Providencia, and in the interaction with the inhabitants of the Santiago city while they perform their function. In addition to discrimination based on class and race, stigmatization is added for the handling of garbage and its sequences (mainly odors).

The uniform is one of the factors that aggravates discrimination, but other problems were also made visible, such as the lack of adequate hygiene conditions to resolve the issue of odors and contact with toxic elements.

A second problem is the language barrier faced by more than 50% of the group, which makes it difficult to carry out their duties properly.

The research also made it possible to identify opportunities, since for the majority, work is an important source of income, which they would like to maintain due to the security it generates but eliminating the discrimination factors that affects them.

The research report was delivered to the Municipality and the University, allowing the uniform to be redesigned again, as well as establishing broader and more pertinent labor integration policies.

Describing solution Gozun is a hospital project, whose objective was to face the deficit of available space in Chilean medical facilities, during the times of COVID19.

The Gozun enclosures consist of prefabricated modular systems that allow adapting the enclosures to the practical needs of the place.

Thus, the various clinical areas such as emergency boxes, care rooms, medical-surgical room, observation rooms, UPC services, etc. are established, complying with the regulatory or technical requirements demanded by the health authorities.

The process implemented The system consists of prefabricated panels, which are joined to form hospital modules of various sizes, the smallest being 18 m2. These modules are joined together, to generate a structure customized to the needs of the client and the land.

The project was developed by a multidisciplinary team; from the health area; architecture, design; construction; finance and legal.

Two were the functions that I performed in this project. First, directing the design area, configuring solutions for space-user interaction (patients and health workers), and second, as head of logistics and acquisitions in the construction phase.

The result, at the end, was an increase in the capacity of the public hospital complex in the Illapel commune, in the north of the country, through the expansion of the available square meters.

The design and construction process lasted 45 days, satisfactorily responding to the sense of urgency of the health emergency, while the hospital was left with an expansion of its installed capacity, beyond the pandemic, far exceeding the cost-benefit ratio other emergency options.
