WOMANOFTHEYEAR
Robyn Lea has established reputation for helping others
By Ben Martin The Vicksburg PostRobyn Lea moved to Vicksburg 16 years ago, and since then, has devoted a sizable portion of her free time to giving back to the community.
“We all kind of have the same vision that we want it to be a great place to live, and to do business, and to raise families and to be a part of what’s going on and to use our lives for a purpose, which is to help each other,” said Lea, who was voted the 2022 Woman of the Year in The Vicksburg Post’s Best of the Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
From being active in food drives to vol unteering for fundraisers to teaching Sun day school, the list of ways in which Lea is involved in the community is extensive.
Lea and her close friend Wanda Cook teach Sunday school together at Crawford Street United Methodist Church. Cook said one of Lea’s strengths is her ability to orga nize groups of people to help each other.
“Sometimes she doesn’t let people know that she does something. She likes to be in the background,” Cook said. “She likes for things to happen, but she does not like to get the credit.”
Cook once helped Lea organize a blan ket drive at Lea’s home. Volunteers crafted handmade quilts and blankets that were then sent to people in need in Guatemala.
“She’s just a giving person. She loves people,” Cook said. “It’s just who Robyn is.”
Lea got her Master’s Degree in social work from Louisiana State University in 1985. Until moving to Vicksburg in 2006, she was a social worker in New Orleans, La., and Orlando, Fla.
“(In New Orleans) I worked in a hospital helping people set up discharge plans, arranging home health and stuff like that. And then I was the treatment coordinator for a brain injury rehab center in Orlando,” Lea said. “Those are people that have sus tained a significant brain injury and their lives will never be the same. So I worked a lot with the families, just helping them
kind of adjust to a new reality.”
After her job as a social worker, Lea worked for the corporate office of State Farm Insurance for a few years. She then became an agent for the company when she moved to Vicksburg, setting up shop on South Frontage Road.
“You’d think that’s a big stretch to go from social work to insurance, but it’s really not, because you’re still dealing with people in a crisis situation. Even if it’s just a car accident or something, a lot of people have never been in one,” Lea said. “While it may not be a bad accident, they don’t really know what to do, who to call, how to take care of all of that. So it really was not as big of a career change as I thought it was going to be. You’re still dealing with people’s problems, just in a different way.”
Lea also wrote a play called “Three Women, Three Paths, One True God,” which she performs annually in Vicksburg. It focuses on the small handful of women named in the Bible in the lineage of Christ.
“I think it’s one of those things that helps me to see what my role is in this great big world,” she said. “Because those women lived thousands of years ago. And yet, what they went through as human beings is really no different from the things that we experience today as human beings, and the choices we make and the problems that we have in our lives.”
In her free time, Lea and her husband Mark Posey are avid hunters. Lea’s office is adorned with a variety of exotic hunting trophies from the couple’s trips to South Africa. Nine uniquely decorated impala skulls are mounted on one of the walls. A large giraffe skull sits on a cabinet behind her desk. She has also been regularly involved in organizing a skeet shooting fundraiser for the Southern Heritage Air Foundation.
Southern Heritage Air Foundation Pres ident Patty Mekus said she is continually impressed with Lea’s devotion to service.
“Her mind is always turning to do some thing for somebody else,” Mekus said. “I just don’t even know if she sleeps. She just does so many good things.”
Heggins is a dedicated, ‘behind the scenes’ community volunteer
By Ben Martin The Vicksburg PostApart from being Constable for the South ern District of Warren County, and co-owning and operating H&M Promotional Products, the Levee Street Warehouse, and Heggins Portable Buildings, John Heggins volunteers an enormous amount of time and energy to his community.
It’s for these reasons Heggins was voted The Vicksburg Post’s 2022 Man of the Year as part of the annual Best of the Best Readers’ Choice Awards. However, this honor is one of the few times people will see him in the spotlight.
“I consider myself a logistics person. That’s why I want to be in the background,” Heggins said.
One organization Heggins said he enjoys fundraising for is the Southern Heritage Air Foundation.
“For the last several years, I’ve been the
ringleader in organizing the clay shoot,” Heggins said. “It’s a fundraiser. We raise anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 for them.”
One of the people he worked with on that project was SHAF President Patty Mekus. Mekus said Heggins is always helping outside of the limelight.
“Behind the scenes, he’s doing so many things for other people,” she said. “Nobody really knows what all he does for the community. But he serves on boards, he donates, he gives his time. Anything that he’s going to do is going to be top-notch.”
Heggins has also been particularly active with volunteer work for the Vicksburg Catholic School. Kristi Smith, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs at the school, said Heggins is very active when it comes to helping others. She mentioned a time when a VCS student’s home burned down. Heggins showed up the next day with a new school uniform for them.
“John is just one of these very, very giving people, of his time and of his resources. And there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t see John giving in some capacity in some way, whether it be for the Vicksburg Catholic school or whether it be for the community,” Smith said. “He’s always out and about giving, and not because he necessarily has to for his job, but because he wants to; because that’s the type of man John is.”
Heggins’ gift for details and organization is something that he has used frequently in his volunteer work. One way he helps the school is by organizing contractors to address issues on the school property.
“He’s helped with odds and ends, whether we have a hole in the roof or a hole in our parking lot,” Smith said. “Or just the little things that seem mundane but nobody else knows how to deal with them or fix them. John (spots) them before anybody else has.”
Born in Abilene, Texas, while his father, a
Vicksburg native, was in the air force, his family moved back to Vicksburg in the early 1970s. Heggins has lived in the River City ever since.
Heggins has been a Warren County Constable since 1983 when he was just 21 years old. Earlier that year, he and four other candidates ran for the office. Heggins lost, but the winner, Roger Hold iness, was impressed with him and offered him a position to help with Constable duties. Heggins said Holdiness became a very important mentor for him in his law enforcement career.
Later in 1983, Holdiness changed his mind and decided to leave office. He backed Heggins in the special election, which Heggins then won.
Heggins said that his position as a constable puts him in situations that can sometimes be trying, but ultimately it is a gratifying experience.
“People call me with whatever their problems may be,” he said. “However big or small I think it may be, it’s big to them. It’s happening right now.”
