My work starts from the precedent study about “in-between space” from SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion, bases on the definition of “threshold”, tries to find different types of “in-between space” and explore them. In my design, I figured three types of “in-between space”: the boundary of architecture, space between two surface and space on and under the ground. In this process, I tried different kinds of digital technology to achieve my design purpose, such as modeling, parametric design, graphic design and rendering, then use different methods to make them as models. I major in architecture design, focus on the relationship among architecture, people’s experience and the environment, try to find out the balance between people’s desire, the environmental protection, architectural function and visual sarisfaction, and try to make them in harmony.

‘The Pavilion is floating aluminium, drifting freely between the trees like smoke. Its appearance changes according to the weather, allowing it to melt into the surroundings. It works as a field of activity with no walls, allowing uninterrupted view across the park and encouraging access from all sides.’ --Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa

SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion is a program under Serpentine Pavilion Gallery series in 2009. This pavilion sat in a park in front of a building, is an architecture in the park and a part of the park. To enter the park or the building, it is the threshold to walk through. As an architecture, its distinctive shape determines it it property as an architecture, however, its open structure and reflective material makes it a part of the surroundings, and vagues property of an architecture. As the threshold, it is the threshold between the building and the park, the park and its entrance. It vagues the boundary between spaces.

SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion

The structure of the pavilion is simple, several thin columns on the floor support the roof, make the pavilion an open structure. Two pieces of transparent patterns make part of the space partly enclosed. People can access the pavilion from anywhere in the park by any direction, the open structure allows them randomly walk within and move in between the pavilion and its outside. Seats and tables are randomly placed and can be removed, they remain the flexibility of the use of space. Two pieces of translute plastic walls half enclose the bar space and event area to create a protected space from wind and seperate them. The hight of them is just over human scale, leave the space above continuous so that can have the connection with the surroundings.

SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion Circulation and threshold analysis SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion is in free form, the roof of it is not completely overlapped on its base, the plasic walls are partly exposed under the sky, the threshold of it is vague, the boundary of the pavilion is indistinct, therefore, it is hard to define which part of the park is in the pavilion, so that can melt the pavilion into the nature. As multiple types of threshold, people in SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion is active. They enter the pavilion from anywhere of it boundary, its shape is the threshold, but the gravels beside the shape may guide them walk through other piece of ground.

In this isometric structure, the spaced occupied and left is similar, the usage of it will become difficult to define, so that in some way can urge people to think about the question: are we managing the space or it is the space is managing us. Gray area is the vacant area in this geometry, it gradually disminish from the right to the left, seems like providing the option of space, but in fact, it is misguiding people so that they can think about the question.

The shape and scale of the displaying space and the apprearance of the wall are similar, which inspire people to think about the question that whether it is the item decorates the wall or the wall decorates the item.

Gray area is the displaying space.

Gray area is vacant space for display, in this instance, white area inside or outside the gray area is similar, which vague the definition of space be use, is that the large space is for using or, n this case, it is occupied? The hardness of defining the space for usage, like the concept of “in-between space”, it is “in-beween definition”.

Leaf Pavilion An architecture melts into the nature, as SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion did.

46

47

Leaf

The inspiration of Leaf Pavilion came from a piece of fallen leaf. The leaf was found on my way home when I tried to seize the mark of the Fall on vegetations. It was yellow and green when I brought it home, then it became twisted when it dried out, The shape of the leaf is interesting, organic curve with initiative structure, starts from one end to the other end, follows the main vein, extended in order but not restricted. The organic form attracts me to make an observation on it, and inspired me to produce the pavilion according to its shape and the biological structure.

48

Generate the shap

To find the organic form, I generate several random point within a box, and chose a start point and an end point (red).

49

Connect the start and through points in the b vein organisation.

Revolve each polyline and twist an isocurve of each recolved surface in 360 degree, to have an organic shape.

Make the middel structure with geomitric patterns, to represent cell arrays of leaf. In reality, the middle surface with voronoi structure may attract people to climb on, make the surface as geometric patterns can provide a reletive safer place for them stay on.

52

Top pavilion frame, is made of steel and with hollow out structure to maintain the translucency of the space. The structure of it somulates the biological structure of leaf.

Generate Structure Points

Middle surface structure, is made of translucent perspex, the translucency allows the light to translute, and reflection on it increase the complexity of structure and make it looked more like a piece of leaf. With trangle panels, people can have a flat surface to sit on.

Landscape of pavilion site, is about two meters sunk where the pavilion is. When people stand inside Leaf Pacilion, the environment is visually scaled up so that can provide a sense of stand under a leaf.

External part of terrain, made of rough gray concrete, is smoothly higher than inner part of terrain, and where people can stand or sit on while having a concert.

Bottom pavilion frame, same material as top pavilion strucutre, is for maintaining structure integrity, both ends touch the ground, is also the support of Leaf Pavilion.

A sunk of sunk ground, is made for placing the bottom of the top pavilion frame, to make the structure stable.

Inner part of terrain, is also the lowest part of this sunk ground. Consisting of rough white concrete, highlight the position of Leaf Pavilion and visually scale up the environment in further step.

Circulation Path 1:125

54

55

Terrain The form of terrain follows the imitaion of leaf structure. Each closed curve is a piece of dried leaf which may be twisted, overlap them and protrude their edge, to show the “vein” of the terrain. The terrain is sunk on where the pavilion is, when people stand under the pavilion, the environment is visually scaled up and make them as if they are standing under a real leaf. Each pattern isolated by “veins” is smooth, they are like cells stay next to each other, when people stand on them, people will become a part of cell, so that can melt the boundary between people and the nature. Yellow box is where the pavilion is cut and the position of section model.

56

57

Model Scale 1:25 Model of pavilion section is made by 3D-print and laser cut. Use 3D-print to produce the pavilion structure in order to present the complicated structure and delicate changing of surface and voronoi structure. Use laser cut to cut the vertical contour of terrain to show the delicate changing of terrain. Then sand the terrain model to make it smooth and also to clean up the burned mark of laser cut raser. The leaf beside is also found on my way home, when I saw it, I thought the shape of it is more similar with my pavilion. There was an insect hidden under it, when I picked the leaf up, the insect quickly ran away.

Rainy Dusk View on the entrance of the pavilion, with vegetation in rainy and foggy weather, present the relation with its surroundings. In this image, translucent and reflective middle surface is in harmony with the ponding under the pavilion, the fog make the structure of pavilion more indistinct, enhance the relation of pavilion with its surroundings that the “leaf is a part of these vegetations.

65

Sunny Afternoon Overview the Leaf Pavilion and its terrain in sun, shows the ground texture and relation of paviliona with the Melbourne city. Melbourne is an environmentally friendly city, architectures are well planned and the nature is well protected. Therefore, the sunk terrain is necessary for the pavilion to speak to the city context, it is half raised and half hidden, makes it could be view but dose not break the harmony of its surroundings. The pavilion is on the ground but also under the ground, its position is vague like SANAA’s Serpentine Pavilion, in order to melt the boundary of the architecture and the nature.

66

Peaceful Night View near Leaf Pavilion at night, with flowers and fireflies, the present of pavilion itself. When the night falls, animals and insects like fireflies are active, they become the users of the Leaf Pavilion. Fireflies slightly light up the night, the light of the pavilion make it like a piece of huge leaf covers a group of fireflies, the architecture finally becomes the part of the nature.
