MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT

How to measure a Croissant? Take photos of different elevation of croissant, print them them out. place tracing paper on croissant photos and fix them together, then use softer pencils (2B) to trace scales of croissant, and harder pencil (HB) to trace the shadow. Make the base of sections as x-axis, set up a coordinate axis, then mesh sections in grid by distance of 1cm, label interactions of grids and the scale, mesh other grids in 45 degree on where they are cut on plan view, draw the scale of section according to labels of interactions, then line the top of each 45 degree grids. In this module, the harvest I got is that how to rebuild items digitally. 1. Make items digital. Eg. scan them, take photos of them, measure them. 2. Base on digitalised material, restore items. Eg. trace items, make drawing of items. 3. Redigitalise restored items. Eg. mesh them, lable them. 4. Combine results of digitalisation and restore, rebuild items.

NEW MARIO WORLD

The making of new Mario world. This is Mario and Yoshi’s garden, the top is where Mario plays, the water underneath is for Yoshi to swim. Sometimes Mario will ride on Yoshi and row it on water, but today Mario is on his way to resure the princess, so only Yoshi swim in water. How do you explore the hidden space in the axonometric? 1. Measure the height and width of each items, label their distance in between each other. 2. Draw most front items first, make them in same thichness. 3. Draw the second front items which are only be covered by the most front items in second layer, second front items are 1cm away from most front items. 4. Then goes the third, forth front layer as the second layer was made. 5. Make sure items in each layer are in line.

4

Drawing of the most front items. Draw a base line on which every items should be, label their position according to their width and distance, then draw their height in 45 degree, finish the cube.

Drawing of second front items. Lines each layer in same distance, table their position, and draw theight in 45 degree.

Final work of first picture. Scanning each layer of drawing, adn use Photoshop join them together.

Final draft of hand drawing Final work of second picture. No second layer was applied in this picture, because no item inside is hidden.

PAPER LANDSCAPE

The making of new landscape The paper landscape is combined with flat pattern and 3D pattern. The scale of 3D pattern comes from a Chinese character “earth, earth is irregular but has continuity, so I combine flatness and cube together, to show the smooth and hump of the earth. The fold of flat pattern is to create the abundance of the module and tell the irregularity of earth even it is flat.

Details of paper landscape.

The original landscape. IUse tweencurve create lines between two different curve, then use sweep2 to create surface.

Patterns. Create two square in different scale and make distance in between in 10cm, put the smaller square above and twist it, then loft them.

Panelled pattern. Use panelling tool to panel saperated patterns on surface, set attractive curve and attract methord, then create the pattern. The back of paper landscape.

Pattern design. Find inspiration from essay I was doing on, the scale is from a Chinese character “earth, delete spare patterns.

INVISIBLE CITY

[Cities & The Sky 2: Beerrsheba] This city is a vanity city, people have their good imagination of heaven and bad of hell, they wish to make the world looked like heaven, but ignore the diverse truth. Their chase and abandon are false, the good in their eyes are bad, the bad they lost is the gold they should chase. What are you trying to show through your project? The picture beside is the route Marco Polo travel through the city, he was happy to see the prosperous scene in life, but when he went inner, the found the truth is not the same as it shown, he was upset, as he finished the trip, he felt light again, because the city is not in his business.

9

Perspective1:

This scene is the actual emvironment and what people want to present. Citizens decorate themself and the vault to show their emphasis--the heaven and themself, the treasure they like, but in fact, what they want is just to make themself looked decent, broken tiles on columns tell every thing that they ignored the broken circumstance. Citizens do not care about the world underground, they employ cleaners to keep the world looked clean, but it is just a show, they do not even find rubbish are not clean off. Marco Polo stands there and sees the chase of treasure of citizens, but also sees the price they pay for chase that the polluted air, muddy ground and rubbish mountain out of the city.

10

Perspective 2:

Here, Marco Polo stands in is the darkest place on the city, he sees the most real scene that evil things are the main features in this city. Spider, mouse, snake, the representatives of greedy, culculating and miserly make what the world have disappeared, in the mean while, people are still in the imagine of their expect of future or the heaven, what the can see or they want to see is the peaceful sea. Citizens hide rubbish in shadow as they think that bed are underground, but in fact, all bad things are living with them.

REFLECTION

What I learned: Orthographic projection: a method of projection in which an object is depicted using a parallel lines to project its outline on to a plane. To draw an orthographic projection, it usually needs understanding of each elevation of the project, then combine or separate each elevation. By orthographic projection, projects are not presented the same as eyes see, it is the combination of people’s understanding of each elevation, is closer to human perception. This projection was commonly used in module two, the Mario drawing. (Week 2) What I gained: From module one to four, knowledge and technique I got as was increased. By learning from workshop, I understood how to use different software, and found their advantage and in which they should be used. These techniques are not hard but sounded hard, once we grasp the skill, it could be widely used in life, such as fixing photo, applying 3D image in mind into real world. But the most important thing I learned from this subject in the progress of making modules is to be strict. When ideas were come up, the best way to achieve it is strictly working on it, not only about the making, but also about the idea. If an idea is come up, then it needs to be improved, be abundant. What can be improved: If a module is failed, to subject reasons, I think it will come from the plan at the beginning, which is what the expected result should bee and timely arrangement of doing project. If it is because of this reason, I will redo the job clearly; in this semester, pass a module do not need to be creative (it does not mean to get a H1), so that failure will largely due to personal reason. But sometimes reasons will rely on object reason, like in module 3, due day is just three days after the feedback in studio 2, to finish it, we are pressed for time. To improve, we just need to do it in a longer time.
