The Beverly Arts Center Continues to Serve the Community The Beverly Arts Center, located on Chicago’s south side, is a multi-faceted organization building community through diverse, quality arts programming, education, and entertainment for all ages and levels. The BAC was founded in 1967 on the premise that the arts deserve a special place in our community. We believe that the arts enrich the lives of children and adults, and that the arts make communities and individuals thrive. In 2000, the organization broke ground on the current 40,000 square foot building and officially opened in 2002. Located in the heart of the historic Beverly/Morgan Park/ Mt. Greenwood neighborhoods, BAC provides affordable access to arts programming and classes, and in-school arts education. The Beverly Arts Center’s programs and services are designed to meet community needs for the visual arts, theatre, music, dance/movement and filmmaking, and include: diverse programming in its 400-seat Baffes Theatre, two art galleries, ample classroom space, music and dance studios, black box theatre, atrium, and courtyard; a robust outreach program; summer camps; collaborations with artists, students, schools and local residents and businesses; community-wide interactions and events, and much more. BAC serves all ages (30,000+ annually) through multicultural enrichment programs encompassing education, exhibition, and performance. • Arts Education - 12,500 students in 45 schools and organizations each year. • School of Fine Arts - classes, student performances, exhibitions and summer camps to over 6,500 students year (80% grades K-12) • Mainstage and Black Box Theatres - local and nation ally renowned theatre, music and dance performances to over 16,000 patrons/yr. • Art Galleries - exhibitions and programming of regional and nationally known artists. • Special Programming and Collaborations - unique projects reflecting diversity of community.
4
Arts Education programs are taught by nearly 100 teaching artists with 200 additional artists as guest teachers for customized classes, includes beginning to advanced instruction in drama, music, dance, and visual arts. Working with teachers and administrators to align programming with school curriculum, BAC’s classes offer programming in S.T.E.A.M that explore engineering, earth science, architecture, biology, and more, through painting, sculpting and creating. Programming adheres to Illinois Arts Learning Standards, with grade appropriate Anchor Standards to develop learning objectives/outcomes. BAC creates replicable models that are used throughout the Chicago Public School system. While BAC was forced to greatly modify program delivery since March of 2020, and cancel all programming for a period of time during 2020, programming has resumed. The School of Fine Arts delivered classes to schools and homes through remote learning, although the limitations of the medium prevented delivering a full line of courses. The COVID-19 impact and mandated facility closure and all programming and event cancelations resulted in loss of income from BAC’s School of Fine Arts classes, camps, live stage events, BAC Star theatre productions, BACinema film screenings, arts education outreach, and facility rentals. BAC has made the adjustments necessary to remain active and serve our community through modified programming. The 2021 budget reflected adaptations to reduced programming – associated reductions in income, with considered decreases in expenses that allow for program delivery with COVID restrictions and with the ability for full program delivery as restrictions allow.

Beverly Art Center helps Cuffe students prepare for future band Even though schools have adapted curriculum to move out of classrooms and into living rooms with virtual learning in the home, one thing that is greatly missed is musical performances of school bands, orchestras and concert bands. As school stages and auditoriums sit empty, waiting for students to one-day return, musical learning continued for Cuffe MST Academy students thanks to a partnership with the Beverly Arts Center.
The class meets twice a week, after regular school hours and currently has about 14 students participating regularly. “We recommend students who have expressed an interest in the arts,” says Cuffe principal Dr. Lakita Reed. “This is the seed to the start of a school concert band once we are back in the physical building and students can learn with instruments in hand.”
“Our partnership with Cuffe is a way to share the arts Funded by a Wurlitzer Foundation Grant, Cuffe fourth with our community,” says Carly Bishop, Artistic Director to seventh grade students can participate in an at the BAC. “We hope to make music acces“The after school, online music program that is sible to those who may not have had the building the foundation for instrumenopportunity and to keep the arts thrivgoal is to tal learning. “The goal is to introduce ing even during a pandemic.” introduce students to students to music by teaching them the basics such as reading For information on the Cuffe music by teaching them the music,” says teaching artist AnBand Program contact Jennifer basics such as reading music,” dre Cardine, a Ph.D. student in Marschand at the Beverly Arts ethnomusicology at Indiana UniCenter at outreach@beverlyarsays teaching artist Andre versity Bloomington. “I believe tcenter.org. Cardine admits that for young students, after a full day of taking classes online sometimes it is challenging to keep them fully engaged even though they’ve volunteered to be there. “I noticed they enjoyed livelier music, so we increased the tempo and watched the music work its magic.” When a student expressed an interest in beat box music, Cardine quickly adapted his lesson to demonstrate the depth analysis of the layers of beatboxing.
For now, the students are learning the basics and the instruments are standing by, ready to get into the hands of young budding musicians. The BAC provided the instruments include keyboards, drums and percussion, trombones, trumpets, saxophones. “We hope that this introduction into music will spark a future concert band,” said Jennifer Marschand, BAC Outreach manager. “This fall our plan is for the students to use what they’ve learned to take the next step—playing the instruments.”

Nance Takes Over as President
In the years that Ed Laginess served tirelessly on the Beverly Arts Center board, he brought an unprecedented level of professionalism and stability to the South Side institution. For Laginess, who recently retired as board president, his work has helped position the BAC to continue to serve as a beacon for arts education, entertainment and programming through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Laginess first joined the BAC board in 2013. He was recruited by 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea, who recognized the value that Laginess’s extensive experience with organizational management and human resources issues, as well as his insights as a multimedia artist, would bring. At the time, the center was in the midst of negotiating its multimillion dollar mortgage with Fifth Third Bank, led by then-board president Barbara O’Malley. “It was a crushing mortgage,” recalled Ed McGunn, who joined the board around the same time as Laginess and who currently serves as treasurer. “Ed, Barb, Tim Enright, Jim Noonan and others negotiated an amazing workout. And the neighborhood came together to save the arts center.” Laginess eventually became vice president of the board. In that role, he helped to re-evaluate the BAC’s School of Fine Arts programming, as well as bringing in a professional accounting company to conduct regular audits. When O’Malley’s term ended in 2017, Laginess took over as president. But despite the extraordinary success in raising money through the BAC Challenge, there was still work to be done. McGunn described just a few of Laginess’s accomplishments in those years. “He really professionalized the arts center,” said McGunn. “He formalized the HR handbook and really enhanced processes and procedures for the board. As a painter, Ed also recognized the need to include artists on the board. He was really passionate about including more art at the art center and helped to establish the Simmerling Gallery and grow the annual Art Comp. He also brought an increased emphasis on diversity and inclusion.” Said Andrew Lindstad, the BAC’s former director of development and marketing, “Ed was visionary in increasing the organization’s position as a cornerstone of the arts community, not only in the 19th Ward, but beyond. One of his greatest legacies is the expansion of the BAC’s outreach program, bringing in-school and after-school arts education to tens of thousands of students throughout the south and south west sides of Chicago who otherwise would not have access to the arts.” While Laginess’s term ended in 2019, he and McGunn both agreed to stay on to help the BAC navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Laginess stepped down in November of 2020, and Andrea Nance has assumed the role of interim board president. Laginess sold his home in North Beverly and currently makes his base of operations in Southwest Michigan. For Laginess, the countless hours spent volunteering with the BAC were a labor of love. “We brought it along from just sort of hanging on to thriving,” he said. “We hired great professional managers and notched up to being a major presence in the art world on the South Side. It’s really an important institution.” He is also confident that Nance will continue to provide strong leadership. “Andrea is one of the individuals who has stepped up and put her heart and soul into the success of the arts center. I feel confident that with her leadership, the commitment of the board and with the strong staff leadership, the BAC will continue to grow and prosper in the years ahead.” 6

She creeps downstairs to play with her favorite present, a nutcracker, which comes to life as a handsome prince who whisks her off to the Land of Sweets. The Nutcracker Suite was first performed March 7, 1892 in St Petersburg, Russia and was instantly popular, and was featured in Disney’s Fantasia.

Fun and imaginative exercises and creative play engage the inner drama king and queen in Acting and Musical Theatre I-III workshops, taught by professional theatre artists. These highly-engaging workshops welcome out-of-the-box and fearless personalities, providing an encouraging environment where students may express themselves through vocal exercises, movement, and character development. Enjoy creating characters of your own? Join us for Plenty of Puppets Workshop! For teens looking to create original works, try Devised Works Workshop or those interested in performing the words of the greatest playwright of all time, William Shakespeare, sign-up for Shakespeare Workshop. Sword Play workshops challenge the performer to engage in scenes of dialogue while swashbuckling on a Pirate Ship, fighting a Medieval Knight, or as a Jedi fighting off the Dark Side. These workshops are taught by a certified Teaching Artist and involve coordination through foot work and different sword styles. A materials fee is included in the price of the workshop. For those interested in learning the ins and outs of theatre design and working backstage, try our new Techies Workshop or Stage Make-up workshop. Students must purchase a Ben Nye Make-up kit, typically about $70 to participate in this workshop.

Performing Arts Categories
No matter the age, there’s a role for everyone! Theatre classes at the Beverly Arts Center range from introductory classes to more advanced work for the vested artist to the opportunity to perform in multiple productions throughout the year. Performance opportunities for all ages include: BAC LITTLE STAR productions | Seussical KIDS (Dec 2021) Willy Wonka KIDS (Mar 2022) Students ages 4-6 rehearse a 30-minute performance. This opportunity introduces our youngest performers to being on-stage, playing a character, memorizing simple song lyrics, and telling familiar stories. These productions culminate with a simple performance on the Baffes Theatre stage with minimal set, props, and costumes. BAC JUNIOR STAR productions | Finding Nemo (Feb 2022) and The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley (August 2022) Students ages 7-12 rehearse an up to 90-minute show, experiencing the art of theatre on a deeper level. More advanced theatre techniques are learned while cultivating character-development, performance technique, and vocal work. These productions culminate in a fully-realized production over multiple dates on the Baffes Theatre stage. BAC TEEN STUDIO productions | Sense and Sensibility (April 2022) and Descendants (July 2022) Students ages 13-22 rehearse a show with themes appropriate for older performers. These include both straight plays and musicals and incorporate the BAC TECHIES class to help get the production up and running. Students learn audition techniques, more advanced theatre theories, acting exercises, warm-up techniques, and push their art to the limit. These productions culminate in a production over multiple dates in the Baffes Theatre or Studio Theatre. BAC STAR+ productions | Annie (Nov 2021) Ages 7-adult. These productions are audition only. Students and community members will get the opportunity to work with a professional director, choreographer, musical director, and theatre designer in addition to performing live on-stage in the Baffes Theatre with professional actors.

SEUSSICAL KIDS
Directed by | Emily Nelson Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton’s challenge is twofold — not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

The customer also grants the BAC permission to use their or their child’s likeness in a promotional capacity including, but not limited to, print materials, web site, online or out of home media, and other mediums now or later developed; as well as permission to share photography and video including their or their child’s likeness for use by media publication and institutions that fund the BAC’s operations and programs.
Tuition and Refunds CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
Full tuition is refunded only for classes or workshops canceled by the BAC. Students who wish to drop a workshop after registering but before the first date of the workshop will be charged a fee of $25.00. No refunds will be offered once a workshop has begun even if the student is absent for the first day of class. No make-up class will be offered if a student misses a class. Registration deadline is Sept 5, 2021. Any patron wishing to register after that date, will be required to pay a $15 late registration fee. During these unprecedented times, no refunds will be given if the classes move to a virtual platform. If the patron no longer wishes to participate, patrons will receive a class credit for a future session to be used within one year’s time. Registration ends the second full week of class. Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. For classes paid for via Invoice, customer acknowledges that remaining payments must be made according to the set payment plan. Full balance must be paid off by due date given. If payment is not paid in full on given due date, patrons will not be able to participate in any future registration. Registration fees will not be prorated for classes missed during the session, nor will they be applied to another session. Not attending a class does NOT constitute an official withdraw from a course or cancellation of tuition or fees.
