Large Vehicles
Highway Code
Cycle Maintenance The M check, working from front to back
• Make eye contact with other road users ensuring they have seen you
• Hang back, large vehicles have blind spots all around them
• Give clear signals to show other road users what you intend to do
• If the road narrows, consider riding in the centre of the lane to prevent dangerous overtaking
• Never cycle up the left side of a lorry stopped at a junction
• Use cycle routes, cycle boxes, advanced stop lines and toucan crossings
• If a lorry comes up behind you, move forward to be in the driver’s field of vision
• Overtake on the offside unless using a cycle lane
• Check that tyres are inflated correctly & that your wheels don’t wobble
• Take up a visible position at lights or advanced stop lines
• No cycling on pavements
• Ride a full door width away from parked vehicles to clear opening doors & emerging pedestrians • Wait ahead of vehicles at traffic lights by using the advanced stop box for cyclists • Don’t be distracted, avoid using mobile phones or listening to music whilst riding • Use Lights & Wear reflective clothing to make you visible day and night • Think about wearing a helmet and replace it every 5 years – BS EN 1078:1997 • Affix a bell and use it to let traffic & pedestrians know of your presence • Take advantage of free training to develop your skills
Cycling_DL_6PP 5.indd 4-6
