• Make eye contact with other road users ensuring they have seen you

• Hang back, large vehicles have blind spots all around them

• Give clear signals to show other road users what you intend to do

• If the road narrows, consider riding in the centre of the lane to prevent dangerous overtaking

• Never cycle up the left side of a lorry stopped at a junction

• Use cycle routes, cycle boxes, advanced stop lines and toucan crossings

• If a lorry comes up behind you, move forward to be in the driver’s field of vision

• Overtake on the offside unless using a cycle lane

• Check that tyres are inflated correctly & that your wheels don’t wobble

• Take up a visible position at lights or advanced stop lines

• No cycling on pavements

• Ride a full door width away from parked vehicles to clear opening doors & emerging pedestrians • Wait ahead of vehicles at traffic lights by using the advanced stop box for cyclists • Don’t be distracted, avoid using mobile phones or listening to music whilst riding • Use Lights & Wear reflective clothing to make you visible day and night • Think about wearing a helmet and replace it every 5 years – BS EN 1078:1997 • Affix a bell and use it to let traffic & pedestrians know of your presence • Take advantage of free training to develop your skills

• Check brake pad depths • Check steering alignment & gears

• Check lighting – batteries & bulbs • Lubricate moving metal parts and joints avoiding the handlebars & seat column • Adjust your saddle – your legs should be almost straight on the downwards revolution • Keep it clean • Get a professional service once a year
