25 Symphony in the Summer

Welcome to the 2018/19 season Now in my second season as Music Director, it feels like a dream to already be able to present such a broad range of my favourite pieces, alongside a phenomenal lineup of international guest artists. ¶ Throughout the season, we welcome world class conductors such as David Danzmayr, Bernhard Gueller and Giordano Bellincampi, as well as our Music Director Emerita Tania Miller. It’s also an honour to introduce our new Principal Pops Conductor Sean O’Loughlin, who will continue to build and cultivate our outstanding Pops series with Broadway, Star Wars, Queen and the Wizard of Oz! Soloist highlights include old and new friends, such as Stewart Goodyear playing his own concerto Callaloo, Prize Winner in the 2016 Cleveland Piano Competition Leonardo Colafelice, esteemed British violinist Tasmin Little, Canadian rising star cellist Daniel Hass, and the Russian wonder pianist Lukas Geniušas. ¶ I’m particularly looking forward to adding some new ingredients to two of our main series; in the Masterworks Series, we will transform one concert into a “Naked Classics”, where animateur Paul Rissmann will guide us through an exploration of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. Rissmann’s presentations have enjoyed enormous success with orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony, New York Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. In the Classics Series, I’m excited to continue to share with you the masterpieces of the classical era, but now gently illuminated by related works from other periods, which will bring a new dynamic to this series. ¶ Last, but not least, I’m proud to present more soloists from our own ranks than any season before, and continue to grow our pioneer position on the contemporary scene, particularly through our Explorations Series, which is steadily developing into one of the most ambitious new music series within a Canadian symphony orchestra. Join us on this amazing journey.

These concerts provide fun, accessible, and engaging experiences while exposing over 10,000 students to the wonder of live orchestral music. Musicians in Schools and Master Class Sessions

Musicians of the orchestra bring innovative, inspiring, and entertaining performances and workshops to school gyms and classrooms. These programs allow students to connect more directly with the musicians as well as provide a forum for open dialogue and eager questions.

Listen, learn, and enjoy the music, magic and mechanics that go into rehearsing for a performance. Scheduled throughout the VS season, these free open rehearsals are available for middle and high school students and teachers to attend. Symphony Story Time

The Victoria Symphony brings a pair of VS musicians and their puppet friend, Cathy Cadence, into local preschools and daycares. Children aged two to five will be treated to a musical performance that matches music to words and feelings.

Adopt a School Program

Committed to supporting music in schools, the VS is thrilled to provide 5 schools in Greater Victoria with a variety of inspiring educational and entertaining performances at no cost. This program is made possible by the generous donation of Beverly Unger. vsSOUNDCHECK

If you are between the ages of 15 and 35, the vsSOUNDCHECK can connect you to classical, pop, jazz and other Victoria Symphony performances for just $15 a ticket. Visit victoriasymphony.ca/ vssoundcheck to sign up.
