VICTORIA SYMPHONY 2020/2021

WELCOME TO A NEW EXPERIENCE

I AM EXCITED TO PRESENT the Victoria Symphony 2020/21 season, which I see as the most dynamic and vigorous season so far during my time as Music Director. Since the beginning of my tenure, it has been wonderful to experience our audiences embracing adventurous directions in programming and sharing our enthusiasm in exploring new ways to communicate great symphonic music to everyone in our community. It is beyond any doubt that the Victoria Symphony is an orchestra in rapid development, and we remain committed to always giving you the highest level of music making. This season we focus on telling a unique musical story in every concert. We open with The Big Picture featuring Canadian star violinist Timothy Chooi in Korngold’s Violin Concerto alongside Mussorgsky’s showpiece Pictures at an Exhibition. Naked Classics returns with Paul Rissmann presenting Stravinsky’s Petrushka and later in the season treasured guest conductor David Danzmayr brings us one of the greatest Scandinavian masterpieces: Stenhammar’s Symphony No. 2. In our Classics Series, we shall encounter some true Austrian Schwung. With our own Brian Yoon playing Gulda’s frantically swinging Concerto for Cello and Wind Band. We end the series with a personal highlight for me this season: Brahms’ A German Requiem. Our Explorations Series continues to break the borders for symphonic storytelling and we are thrilled to present Canadian composer John Estacio’s Aurora Triptych with live video by Emmy nominated astronomer/visual artist Dr. Jose Salgado. Finally, I couldn’t resist it anymore, and simply had to share with you, music of the composer that is closest to my heart: Richard Strauss. His epic tone poem A Hero’s Life will stand as the ultimate conclusion to a season that truly dares to move, inspire and innovate. Welcome!

CHRISTIAN KLUXEN, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Kevin Light Photography: Kevin is an award-winning photographer based in Victoria, British Columbia with over 10 years of experience collaborating with local, national and international clients. He combines the technical skills learned in photography school with the communication and team-building knowledge gained during a 15-year career on the Canadian National Rowing Team, which culminated in winning an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008.

About the photography: The shutter speed was set at 10 seconds, which allowed for the blue ambient light from the Johnson Street bridge and the yellow and orange light coming from the street lamps to appear as streaks if the camera was moved in a circular motion or back and forth. The subject was lit by a flash that lasted only 1/250 of a second, which was fast enough to freeze their image, keeping them sharp and in focus.Â
