Message from the Music Director

In my hometown of Copenhagen, Denmark, there is an inscription above the stage of the Royal Theatre that boldly declares “EI BLOT TIL LYST.” This simple yet profound statement translates as “Not Just For Pleasure,” and encapsulates my view of music’s potential to enrich our lives. Whenever you enter a concert hall I invite you to delve deep and allow yourself to be moved by the full range of human emotions that music can evoke within. As the Victoria Symphony, we’re here to offer much more than entertainment; we aim to provide you with a reflection and amplification of life in all its complexity.

The great German composer and conductor Richard Strauss once said, “In times when spiritual goods are rarer than material ones, and egotism, envy, and hatred govern the world, music will do much to re-establish love among mankind.” In a world that continues to be challenged by conflict, we believe music has the power to bridge differences and rekindle our shared humanity. That’s one reason why our 2024/25 Season begins with Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs. They take us on a journey which we will all experience – from life, to death, and beyond – offering a glimmer of hope and beauty amidst the shadows.

In tough times, we find strength. In moments of reflection, clarity. And when listening to music, hope.

Message from the CEO

Dear Friends of the Victoria Symphony, Welcome to our 2024/25 Season! It is with sincere gratitude that I thank you for providing us with the confidence we needed to make this ambitious offering. That the orchestra is reaching new artistic heights while our programming and audience expand is not by chance. Musicians do their best when they feel their efforts are recognized and enjoyed by the communities they serve. The season contained within these pages continues our upward trajectory and trusts in the hope of capturing still more people’s imaginations with the power of orchestral music.

With the ubiquity of the internet and digital technology in our lives, our easy access to different artistic and cultural offerings can now seem limitless –dauntingly so. It is a fact that we are living in an age of unprecedented freedom of choice for determining our own tastes. If you know what you’re

looking for, you can find anything in an instant. Strangely though, I find it is getting harder to stumble across something new.  The online platforms we use predictably present us with more of what we already know when many of us still long to be surprised. In this new world of algorithmic artistic curation, what we do at the Victoria Symphony feels more important than ever. We provide audiences with the opportunity to experience live music and diverse programs designed and performed by people whose motivation is relatively pure – to delight and surprise you. From the works of Richard Strauss to the songs of ABBA, there is music here that will make you feel alive. Music that we share because we love it and think that you will too. Thanks to all the musicians, staff, board, donors, funders, and artistic collaborators who collectively make the Victoria Symphony an organization of which we can all be proud.

SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 10

In a time of darkness, beauty can still emerge. In the landscape of mid-century politics, war, and oppression, Strauss and Shostakovich were both victims of circumstance. In the twilight of his years, Strauss reflected on our walk through life towards death, and beyond. Shostakovich’s Tenth mirrors the terror he experienced under Stalin’s rule, but ultimately his triumph at simply outliving the dictator. Humanity can prevail – a reflection as relevant today as it was 70+ years ago.

her entire life championing her people, land, and culture while calling out oppressive systems and structures. With an extraordinary musical aesthetic, Tanya mines an artistic tradition dating back tens of thousands of years with a fierce power and contemporary sensibility. Tagaq’s performance will include qiksaaqtuq, featuring the Victoria Symphony, a moderated discussion, and sivunittinni, accompanied by the Emily Carr String Quartet.

From the deceptively simple to disguised genius, these works from different eras connect in intriguing ways. Ligeti’s Austro-Hungarian roots link the Vienna of old with the micro-melodic modern day. Mozart’s “Prague Symphony” features the same playful wit and melodic genius of his operas The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Korngold was viewed as modern day Mozart, evolving from child prodigy in Vienna to a pioneering composer for stage and screen. And Nielsen’s neo-classical concerto, featuring VS Principal Clarinet David Boutin-Bourque, encapsulates the Danish composer’s often inscrutable personality.

The “Emperor Concerto” reigns among Beethoven’s greatest works, especially in the hands of returning piano soloist Jon Kimura Parker. VS also welcomes the recently enthroned Artistic Director of the Vancouver Island Symphony to lead this regal program. Along with music of Johann Strauss, we also recruit flashy and folksy Hungarian dances by Kodály, and the concert premiere of a contemporary Canadian work based on a 13th-century song by Alfonso X of Castile.

A fateful quote from The Iliad inspired Beethoven, and the American composer Carlos Simon. Is it fate, “knocking at the door” that their works should be featured on the same program? Like Beethoven, Prokofiev composed five piano concertos. From its premiere in 1921 with the Chicago Symphony, Prokofiev’s Third Concerto has proven to be his most popular—a brilliant showcase of both the lyrical and the virtuosic gifts of the great pianistcomposer.

BARTÓK: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta

Two musical giants converge in a program that touches on music of the night. In modern parlance, Mozart’s Gran Partita could be subtitled “My Big Fat Viennese Wind Symphony.” Its rich sonority stems from a palette of woodwinds with double bass, likely written as an evening’s entertainment – music as big as all outdoors! Bartók paints a more complex canvas of mid-century Europe, with two string orchestras astride with a bevy of percussion. Here the mystic contrasts with nature, where genius and madness blur. Two colossal contrasts of orchestral colours!

Violin Concerto, especially as interpreted by the internationally-renowned, Victoriaborn violinist, Timothy Chooi. Rodney Sharman’s update of Scarlatti's music provides a modern perspective of its easy-going virtuosity and surprising dissonances.

Poetry, mystical texts, and an angelic altarpiece tie together this program of divine inspiration. Lyric tenor Josh Lovell returns home to Victoria to sing Finzi’s rhapsodic cantata and some of Strauss’s exquisite lieder in rich orchestral settings. Alongside the inspired ecstasy of Lizst’s tone poem and Hindemith’s imaginative symphonic portrait, their spiritual connections will be unveiled.

NIELSEN: Symphony No. 2 “The Four Temperaments”

“Oh, how difficult it is to make anyone see and feel in music what we see and feel ourselves.” Early, temperamental reactions to his Violin Concerto must have stung Tchaikovsky, but it’s now a firm favourite of countless violinists, including Canada’s Blake Pouliot. A set of comic portraits of personality types, or temperaments, triggered Nielsen to recreate them in musical form, from the introverted (melancholic and phlegmatic) to the extroverted (choleric and sanguine).

Composer Missy Mazzoli’s mesmeric Sinfonia is music ‘in the shape of the solar system,’ weaving and coiling itself in a sequence of pulsing loops.

In advance of Valentine’s Day, we share three heart-felt musical depictions of love: the tragedy of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers from the pen of Tchaikovsky; Saint-Saëns’ romantic, poetic musings in an inspired dialogue between two soloists; and the nostalgic longing for home experienced by Dvořák. KoreanCanadian conductor Earl Lee serves as Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.

Lost in a blizzard, Charlotte finds herself whisked on a journey through the Magical Monarchy of Musical Magnificence, exploring the sounds and colours of the orchestra and leading her to an unexpected discovery, not only about music, but about herself. The concert features enchanting illustrations by Graham Ross and a stunning original score by Alain Trudel, with selections from Handel, Grieg, and upbeat arrangements of well-known popular tunes.

“In the beginning…”  Drawing on biblical texts from Genesis and the Psalms, as well as John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, Haydn moulded his gloriously tuneful and optimistic oratorio The Creation. Out of the chaos of darkness emerges light, heaven and earth, plants, animals, and humankind. Sung in English by a stellar cast of soloists and choristers, this milestone musical work from the Age of Enlightenment continues to enthral audiences, as joyful and lifeaffirming as a walk in a garden.

The product of a summer’s holiday in 1883, Brahms’s Third Symphony has been described as being “...artistically the most perfect.” A single movement from Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 was the inspiration for Britten to present a musical posy: What the Wildflowers Tell Me. The poetry of Pablo Neruda moved Peter Lieberson to create a song cycle for his wife, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, "one of the most extraordinarily affecting artistic gifts ever created by one lover to another.”

The return of Angela Hewitt is a not-tobe-missed event. Mozart’s Concert-Rondo was a “new and improved” ending for a much earlier concerto, designed to please the audiences in Vienna. Between 1784 and 1786, Mozart completed a remarkable twelve concertos, including the sublime C major (latterly nicknamed the Elvira Madigan) and the earthshattering C minor—one of only two that the legendary composer wrote in a minor key. Finzi’s Eclogue is a dialogue between piano and strings, a nostalgic and quintessentially British work worth discovering.

The Spirit Horse Returns is a captivating concert for all ages that blends traditional North American Indigenous teachings, stunning visual art, and a rich orchestral score to tell powerful stories and legends of the Ojibwe Horses. A collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous co-creators, it takes audiences on a journey through time, exploring the history of the Ojibwe horses as helpers and spirit guides for First Nations and Métis people, and how they were affected by the arrival of settlers, the Gold Rush, and Pony Express. The show has an inspired and uplifting message, as groups come together to rescue the last of the Ojibwe horses, giving them new life and hope.

We believe that music is essential in our lives and vital to a well-rounded education for young people. As part of our commitment to building a strong community, we are pleased to offer a wide variety of engaging programs for youth, students, teachers, and the public.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH CONCERTS

These concerts are designed for students Kindergarten through Grade 6 in Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, Gulf Islands, and Cowichan School Districts, as well as independent and home learners. They are fun, accessible, and engaging experiences, that expose students to the wonders of live classical music. Over 5,000 K-6 students attended last season!

LESSON PLANS

These educational support materials are designed to engage elementary and early middle school students with symphonic music. The material is designed to prepare students attending the Education & Outreach Concerts.

CONCERTS IN SCHOOLS

This program introduces students to different instruments and musical styles while providing a glimpse into the world of our hard working musicians.

OPEN REHEARSALS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

This program invites middle and high school classes to attend select Victoria Symphony rehearsals. Students get to see how a professional orchestra rehearses, while listening to the full orchestra up-close, followed by a Q & A.

SYMPHONY

STORY TIME

Specially created for preschool-aged children, this program provides youngsters with an opportunity to learn about the Symphony and orchestral instruments. These highly interactive performances are tailored for active young children’s attention spans and are a perfect way to introduce children to the world of music.

TAKE NOTE

This program brings a VS musician to select schools before students attend the Education & Outreach Concert. Students are introduced to some of what they will hear at the concert and get a sense of what it’s like to play with the Victoria Symphony.

INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO

This initiative provides children of all ages the opportunity to try a musical instrument. It’s a relaxing and fun way to spark a child’s interest in music and gives them a firsthand try at many different instruments. Our youth volunteers facilitate the Zoo at Kids Concerts and community events around Greater Victoria.

This innovative program supports local young composers as they write new works for small ensembles of dedicated VS musicians. Aspiring composers attend workshops guided by our VS Composer-Mentor in Residence, and at the end of the program, there is a performance of the new music.

HUGH DAVIDSON COMPOSER READINGS

Dedicated to the late Hugh Davidson, a strong supporter of new music, this program provides the opportunity for aspiring professional composers writing new music for orchestra, to have their pieces rehearsed by the VS, and to receive feedback. A call for submissions occurs annually.

The featured Ensembles bring innovative, inspiring, and entertaining performances and workshops to schools from November to May.

INSTRUMENT CLINICIANS & WORKSHOPS

These workshops provide students with customized training on their instrument. A VS musician visits the classroom for up to four sessions that include demonstrations and insight into the world of a professional musician.

PRE-CONCERT CHATS

All VS concerts, unless specified, begin with a Pre-Concert Chat that guides audiences through the music they are about to hear. These free talks feature conductors, guest artists, and composers, who provide context designed to be enjoyed by the first-time concertgoer as much as the experienced aficionado.

WOMEN IN MUSICAL LEADERSHIP

We are a proud participant in Tapestry Opera’s Women in Musical Leadership Program. This program, in lead partnership with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Pacific Opera Victoria, supports women and non-binary conductors by providing mentorship, training, and placements with orchestras, opera companies, and ensembles across Canada.
