Who: Dakar FoundaIon for the Performing Arts is a visionary nonprofit
organizaIon commiWed to providing youth with mainstream access to entertainment industry tools and career paths with the help of mentors and industry leaders. . The foundaIon is dedicated to Barbara Clark as she and Kevin are the founding visionaries responsible for all efforts and the mission of the foundaIon.
What: Studio 26 is a unique asset for Compton Unified School District (CUSD). It is a broadcast studio that transmits shows 24/7 on a dedicated channel in the community of Compton. While this is an incredible asset, it has fallen behind. In a day of digital technology, the studio is sIll analog. It is in need of a substanIal upgrades.
Where: The studio itself is on the campus of Compton High School but It is the
property of the larger district which means that students can come from schools (high school and middle schools) through out the district. Ryan Whetstone, CUSD Director of ROP, will conInue to be involved to ensure that students conInue to meet the academic standards required by the state while also acquiring relevant jobs skills and training.
Why: The students in the CUSD live in a community with an unemployment
rate of 15% while the CA rate is 7.8%. Unfortunately with a high school graduaIon rate of 65% (CA is 80%), many young adults will not fair much beWer. Improving high school graduaIon rates and proving students with relevant needed job skills will be important to improve lives and the community. The investment into this facility to make it state of the art would not only provide many students with an opportunity to receive on the job training, it would also keep them acIvely involved in their educaIon – improving the graduaIon rates. Others students will benefit as well since they and their academic achievements will be the content of many of the programs that will be shown on the channel.
