can’t believe it’s been 30 years since Dr. Quiroz and I decided to move our clinic from California to Tijuana. Although Dr. Quiroz is licensed to practice both in the US and Mexico, we decided to move to Tijuana with a vision: providing the same or higher quality of care and medical excellence from the US, at a more affordable price that would allow our patients to save up to 50% on any procedure. Over time, we formed an extraordinary team: Dr. Fuentes, Dr. Castañeda, Dr. de la Fuente, Dr. Saldaña, Dr. Sanchez, and our talented team of nurses, therapists, patient specialists, and administrative staff. We all work together with the sole mission of providing you with a quality medical experience you can trust, and world-class facilities and service that makes you say ‘Wow!’. We’re particularly proud to look back and say that over the last 30 years we have received more than 100,000 patients from over 20 countries and 5 continents. Our reputation has crossed borders, and for that, we have you to thank, our patient. So, thank you. Thank you for finding us, for learning about us, for choosing us to care for you, and thank you for recommending us! Thanks to you we work every single day to provide the highest-quality care possible. The best way to extend our gratitude is to improve the way we serve you every new day, every time you visit us. For this issue of the VIDA Magazine, we take a trip down memory lane and look back to our 30 years together. We know you’ll love reading about how this whole clinic started and about our newest addition: The IPL Nordlys®, as well as our quick tips and informative notes. hen I decided to get a Facelift, I did a lot of research. By a lot I mean I looked up hundreds of doctors and hospitals and read countless reviews. I interviewed over 20 plastic surgeons and contemplated 3 different countries. When I finally narrowed it down to VIDA Wellness and Beauty located in Tijuana, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy TJ as much as I did. I arrived to Tijuana a couple of days before the surgery, so I had time to relax, unwind, and explore the city and some of the Baja Peninsula. I must confess I was a little anxious because my Spanish is very basic, but many people I met were bilingual and always helpful. I explored the wine region of Valle de Guadalupe and bought some wines to take home to celebrate my recovery. My favorite part though? The food! You can’t say you’ve had authentic Mexican food until you’ve crossed the border. Now that I’m back home after a wonderful experience, I honestly plan to go back for a sunny vacation soon! Baja bound anyone?

Dr. Juan Fuentes, a world-class plastic surgeon, and Botox expert
on Botox and its cosmetic uses

hen talking about non-invasive cosmetic treatments, Botox injections are usually the best known of all. Botox is the absolute most popular cosmetic procedure performed every day in the US. And while most of you have probably heard something about Botox, read some of its do’s and don’ts, and even seen a pic or two from a celeb who abused it, we’ve decided to craft a little Botox guide and give you some more info about it. For this, we also asked Dr. Juan Fuentes, a world-class plastic surgeon, and Botox expert to tell us, first-hand some important things you should know before scheduling your first Botox treatment. WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, LET’S TALK BOTOX! What is Botox? Botox is actually the brand name for a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum, a form of bacteria, called botulinum toxin. It’s essentially a poison. You might be as shocked as we were the first time we heard Botox was a poison. After all, who wants poison injections? But Botox is amazingly safe if done right. The many uses of Botox make it one of the best treatments available for
We should add that in these areas of the face is where Botox is most effective as well.
“THE MOST COMMON USE OF BOTOX IS TO DECREASE CROW’S FEET, FROWN LINES AND HORIZONTAL WRINKLES ON THE FOREHEAD.” many conditions that extend beyond cosmetic uses. Botulinum toxin is used around the world to treat things as migraines, eyelid spasms, excessive sweating and salivation, and of course, in the world of cosmetic treatments, signs of aging.
and fine lines in different areas of the face. And Botox being #1 in the world of cosmetic medicine is not a coincidence. Botox is widely used to get reliable and positive cosmetic results due to its flexibility, safety, and effectiveness. Although its uses have become practically endless, Dr. Fuentes assures us that, “The most common use of Botox is to decrease crow’s feet, frown lines and horizontal wrinkles on the forehead.”
Why is Botox used for cosmetic purposes? When used correctly and administered by a licensed professional, Botox is incredibly effective to combat wrinkles 4
THE PROS BOTULINUM TOXIN OFFERS: • Proven safety record. We all now Botox is not a novelty. Its uses are still amazing us though, and thanks to its popularity, doctors and patients alike can know what to expect in the middle and long term as far as side effects go. Also, when Botox is administered by a licensed professional, you’re choosing a safe way to minimize wrinkles with little risk of any side effects. • Convenient. Getting Botox can be done in as little as 15 minutes. With no downtime or anesthesia, you can get your Botox fix and go back to your regular routine. • Affordable. Your wallet might not be ready to commit to plastic surgery, or you might still be saving for it, then Botox will be your best choice. And with prices as unbelievably affordable as $8 dollars per unit - getting Botox is a cost-effective way to disappear your crow’s feet or the wrinkles that are slowly claiming residence in your forehead. • Effective. Why is Botox used for cosmetic purposes you ask? Because it simply
works. When keeping up with regular treatments and touch-ups, it is safe to say that a naturally youthful look is guaranteed for a long time. Does Botox remove wrinkles? How does it work? If you think you’re ready to book your first appointment, wait. Dr. Fuentes thinks it’s best for first-timers to really understand how Botox or any of the other brands of botulinum toxin available, actually do their magic. To answer the first question - no, Botox does not remove wrinkles. As Dr. Fuentes explained, “Botox does not actually remove wrinkles. It relaxes the facial expression muscles, smoothing out the area, decreasing the depth and number of wrinkles visible.” Once the effect has passed, the muscles will regain strength and movement, which will cause wrinkles to return. We recommend discussing the frequency of touch-ups you’ll need with your doctor to ensure long-lasting results. How long does Botox last? Dr. Fuentes confirmed that Botox usually lasts 3 to 4 months. “Depending on the patient and the area treated, in some cases, it can last up to 6 months,” he explained. The fact that Botox is not permanent is what makes it so great too. It’s easy to adjust anything you don’t like in your next session, just talk to your doctor about it. What can I expect the first time I get Botox?
“BOTOX DOES NOT ACTUALLY REMOVE WRINKLES. IT RELAXES THE FACIAL EXPRESSION MUSCLES, SMOOTHING OUT THE AREA, DECREASING THE DEPTH AND NUMBER OF WRINKLES VISIBLE.”
During your appointment, your doctor might rub the area to be treated with a light anesthetic cream. Once the area is numb, your doctor will proceed to inject Botox into specific facial muscles. He or she will ask you to make certain expressions, depending on the areas you want to treat, to identify which muscles need more or less attention. The procedure only takes a few minutes, and you can go back to doing things as usual afterward. Botox takes some time to kick in, so expect to notice an improvement in your wrinkly areas around 3 to 7 days after the injections.
tive is knowing how important it is to choose the right provider. Dr. Fuentes recommends sticking with plastic surgeons and dermatologists specifically trained to administer Botox. While there are cosmetologists and even make-up artists that offer Botox, Dr. Fuentes reminded us that, “A plastic surgeon or a dermatologist will have a much wider training and knowledge on the facial anatomy and the facial muscles functions, so there are fewer chances of getting untoward results or complications after a Botox application.”
What else should I know before getting Botox? The most important thing to ensure that your experience with Botox is safe and posi5

aise your hand if you’ve tried exercising and dieting without getting the results you really want. Now raise your hand if that has made you feel incredibly frustrated. It is only human to feel tired of doing everything you can think of to get a flat stomach, no muffin top and toned thighs (we’re talking to you, chub, rub, no one wants you here!). But before you give up, let us introduce you to CoolShaping. We’ll say it like it is: it is indeed very very COOL. CoolShaping is the very definition of ground-breaking technology: the best non-invasive body slimming solution available. And it works! It delivers real results, with no discomfort or downtime: a painless way to say “see you never” to those stubborn, flabby pockets of fat. What exactly is CoolShaping then? Sounds too cool to be true? CoolShaping combines the technology of cryo, vacuum and LED light therapy in one ultra-efficient system that can help you get rid of stubborn fat once and for all while boosting collagen production. During the treatment, cryo-energy is delivered to your body with vacuum and
will continue to be eliminated. Voilà! The best is that during this whole process, you won’t feel a thing.
LED technologies, making it the most efficient cryolipolysis (fat freezing) system out there. Ok…how? CoolShaping is far superior than any other cryolipolisis treatment available because not only is fat tissue frozen down to 14 F but also LED light offers the added bonus of tightening the skin, resulting in a smoother appearance. This is what happens when you get cool shaping: First, the applicator works its magic on the target (more like problem) area, once it is applied, fat cells in your body start to respond to cryo-crystallization. For the following 30 days, fat cells in the treated area reach biological death and are removed by your metabolism. After that, and for the next 90 days, fat cells 6
What else do I need to know about Cool Shaping? Most patients need 1 to 3 treatments to get jaw-dropping results. The best results are obtained when you get your treatments done every 4 to 6 weeks. And while each session lasts around 1 hour, you can go back to your life right after, your body will keep on getting rid of the unwanted fat for 90 days post-treatment and no pain, blood or bruising will be on your mind. Since here at VIDA we want to make sure you get the best results possible, we advise you to schedule a quick consultation with our body contouring expert, Dr. Carlos Castañeda. He’ll help you understand if Cool Shaping is for you and the results you can expect. FYI: CoolShaping is best advised for people with a BMI of 30 or lower who are trying to get rid of stubborn fat bulges. This treatment is not a weightloss procedure nor is it a replacement for liposuction.

hile it’s completely normal for doctors and patients alike to use the terms interchangeably, it’s helpful to learn how and why they differ, particularly when you are looking for a surgeon. You might be surprised to learn that all along, while you thought you were having a plastic surgery procedure, in reality, you were actually planning a cosmetic surgery. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLASTIC SURGERY AND COSMETIC SURGERY? The main difference between the two is the main objective of the surgery. As a norm, every type of cosmetic surgery is considered elective surgery, while some plastic surgeries might not be. Didn’t see that
COSMETIC SURGERY VS PLASTIC SURGERY coming? Let’s look at a little history behind the differences. Plastic surgery, as originally conceived, is meant to help patients reconstruct defects that might impair functions of different parts of the body, injuries from accidents, burns, or diseases. Some examples of plastic surgery are:
• cleft palate repair surgery • breast reconstruction after breast cancer • extremity defect repair surgery In order to become Plastic Surgeons, doctors go through extensive training, such as a fellowship in plastic surgery, residency training and pursue certification by a Plastic Surgery Board. 8
COSMETIC SURGERY VS PLASTIC SURGERY? While cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are different, they are not total opposites. In order to successfully and safely perform the most common types of cosmetic surgery procedures, the best doctors are usually trained in plastic surgery AND cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is completely focused on enhancing our appearance. From fixing the slightly crooked tip of your nose to lifting your breasts and minimizing deep wrinkles, cosmetic surgery can do it all. Thanks to years of surgical advances and new revolutionary techniques that have changed the way cosmetic surgery is performed, we are seeing the most natural and aesthetically satisfying results ever!
Our board-certified plastic and cosmetic surgeons are experts in these cosmetic surgery procedures: • Facelift and Necklift. • Rhinoplasty (Nose surgery) • Eyelid and Brow Lift. •L iposuction and Abdominal Etching. • Tummy Tuck. •B razilian Butt Lift and Butt Implants. •V aginal Rejuvenation Surgery. •B reast Lift and Breast Augmentation. • . ..Among others!
WHILE COSMETIC SURGERY AND PLASTIC SURGERY ARE DIFFERENT, THEY ARE NOT TOTAL OPPOSITES. If you do a little digging online, it’s possible to come across warnings against cosmetic surgeons. This is because any licensed surgeon can practice cosmetic surgery, regardless of their specialized training on cosmetic procedures. Sadly, it is not uncommon to find all types of doctors practicing cosmetic surgery in order to make profits. When getting plastic or cosmetic surgery, make sure your doctor is board certified by the plastic surgery board of his country or state. For cosmetic
surgery, it’s good to keep in mind that when doctors follow strict training in cosmetic surgery, you can rest assured that you are in good hands. How do you know if your doctor is a good cosmetic surgeon? Research their background and if they’ve had extensive education, are board-certified, and have specific cosmetic surgery specialties. Our VIDA surgeons were trained as plastic and cosmetic surgeons, making them some of the most accomplished surgeons in the field. Why should
this be a decisive factor? When a doctor has been trained as a plastic surgeon, he is introduced to cosmetic surgery. From there, the surgeon can follow specialized training in cosmetic surgery. Only board certified plastic and cosmetic 9
surgeons have the knowledge and ability to safely perform these surgeries! It is also important to know your cosmetic surgeon’s area of expertise and technique, which you can easily verify for each of our VIDA surgeons.

What to Expect for Your First Cosmetic Dermatology Appointment What is a Cosmetic Dermatologist? Who do you go to with if you want to have gorgeous skin? Many people would go to a dermatologist, but when trying to look nothing but dazzling, you should pay a visit to a cosmetic dermatologist. While a standard dermatologist can diagnose and treat common skin and hair conditions, a cosmetic dermatologist focuses on both your health and your beauty

Going to a cosmetic dermatologist is the perfect opportunity to solve all your skin and hair issues. Whether you want to get rid of acne, reduce the appearance of scars or en-
hance your natural features; a visit to a cosmetic dermatologist is exactly what you need. The most effective treatments such as a laser for cellulite reduction or an oxygen facial, need an expert hand. Therefore, whenever you are considering a cosmetic treatment, don’t risk your skin or your health, and choose a qualified medical professional. What services does a Cosmetic Dermatologist offer? Cosmetic Dermatologists are trained in all sorts of non-invasive treatments that will help you look your best. VIDA offers a wide range of cosmetic procedures focused on both your face and body. Looking for younger and brighter skin? Try a session of Dermablate, our laser skin resurfacing treatment. Longing for a head full of thick and glossy hair? Visit the Hair Center for micro hair transplantation. Wanting to tone and improve your figure? Try an ultra-effective CoolShaping session. 10
What should I expect at my first Cosmetic dermatology appointment? When visiting a cosmetic dermatologist for the first time, you can expect a personalized assessment of the condition of your skin and an honest review of the expected results from treatment. The dermatologist team at VIDA will recommend an appropriate treatment to help you achieve your goals. Once you have decided on the procedure or procedures you’re getting, VIDA’s cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. de la Fuente, will guide you on the correct course of action. For example: how many sessions you will need, what precautions you should have, and what, if any, lifestyle adjustments you will need to make. One thing is for sure: when seeing Dr. de la Fuente or anyone else on our dermatology team, you can be confident that the procedures administered at VIDA’s Medi Spa will help you look and feel your best. In short, if you want to look amazing, enlist the help of a cosmetic dermatologist to provide the best care to that gorgeous skin of yours.

A TRIP TO BAJA: OUR REASON TO SMILE
H
ave you been putting off your vacations because of the high prices of your much-needed dental work? We know the struggle. Cosmetic Dentistry in the US can be extremely expensive. It should be a crime to have to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a white and straight smile. Luckily, we found an amazing solution: a Dental Vacation in Mexico. Going to the dentist doesn’t sound too touristy, does it? But hear us out, and we’ll explain what convinced us! When you live in a place where snow days extend into May and spring is practically non-existent, you definitely could use some time in the sun. Let’s be honest, by the time October comes it’ll be grey, cold and dreary again. Our need for sunshine attracted us to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico to get our much-needed dose of vitamin D and Vitamin Sea. While there, we did some research on cosmetic dentistry in Mexico and came across VIDA Wellness and Beauty Center, located in Tijuana. Cosmetic dentistry in Mexico has become popular, and it’s no surprise why! We chose VIDA because they have years of experience providing international tourists with
low-cost dental procedures without sacrificing safety or quality. Everyone who helped us at VIDA, including Dr. Ceballos and the rest of his staff, was an expert in his or her field. We immediately took notice of their board certifications and diplomas of courses they take in order to stay up-to-date with leading dental treatments and the best technological advancements available. When we stepped into VIDA’s Dental Studio, we received personalized and clear attention. The prices were fair, transparent and clearly explained to us.

CONFESSIONS FROM A PATIENT:
the importance of trusting your Gynecologist
14
s a young woman, I grew up hearing my mom tell me how important it was to go to the Gynecologist regularly. But if I’m being honest, when I was in my 20’s I avoided going to get a pap smear as much as I could. It was just a scary, cold, and awkward experience. No thank you. After growing up and having 2 babies, I grudgingly learned that I really did need to visit my Gynecologist regularly. I forced myself to go. But a couple of years ago, I finally said ‘Enough’, and decided to take action. After researching doctors in my area, I finally found Dr. Saldaña at VIDA Wellness and Beauty. I asked to have an initial appointment with him before getting anything done, and I discovered he was very patient and kind. He answered all of my questions even as I told him I wasn’t sure I wanted him to be my doctor. He completely understood and helped reassure me in every way. From patient to patient, let me tell you some of the things that helped me choose Dr. Saldaña as my Gynecologist. • He has more than 30 years of experience. He knows how to help his patients feel comfortable. • He offers all sorts of preventative services from HPV vaccinations to Pap smears, pregnancy care and more. • He can manage your birth control, whether you’re on the pill, have an IUD or get the shot. •H e is an experienced surgeon! (Little side note here: I tried Juliet to help with my incontinence after my 2nd pregnancy. The results were amazing, to be honest. But that’s a topic for another day!) • He is licensed and board-certified.
• He is genuinely a nice person and very attentive. Every single appointment with him has been a pleasant experience, and without noticing, I stopped postponing my visits to the Gynecologist. One last thing? Always choose a doctor that treats you like Dr. Saldaña treats all of his patients: like a person and a priority that deserves to be taken care of with the utmost respect, professionalism, and empathy. Understanding Urinary Incontinence and how to treat it with Juliet GENERALLY, PATIENTS NEED AROUND 3 SESSIONS, BUT AFTER ONLY ONE APPOINTMENT, YOU WILL FEEL A DRAMATIC REDUCTION IN URINARY LEAKAGE AND URGENCY! HOW DO YOU TREAT INCONTINENCE? Bladder control is a problem that can cause you embarrassment or even stop you from doing everyday activities. However, you shouldn’t be ashamed. In fact, it is quite common. If you are one of the many women, or men, who experience urinary incontinence, you shouldn’t let it stop you from living your life at the fullest. Let’s break down what causes urinary incontinence and how to treat it. WHAT CAUSES URINARY INCONTINENCE? The causes are varied and depend on many factors. Incon16
tinence may be a temporary problem caused by a urinary tract infection, constipation or even certain medications. It may be a chronic problem with emotional and physical factors in play. WHAT CAUSES URINARY INCONTINENCE IN THE ELDERLY? Urinary incontinence in elderly people is a common symptom of the natural aging process. Nearly 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 suffer from this problem. For many elderly women, urinary incontinence is caused when pelvic organs shift out of their normal place into the vagina or when they have a sudden need to urinate and cannot hold their urine long enough. As for men, they can suffer from urinary incontinence when an enlarged prostate is blocking the urethra. WHAT CAUSES URINARY INCONTINENCE IN YOUNG ADULTS? A common misconception regarding urinary incontinence is that it only affects older people, when in fact young adults can have this condition for a number of rea-
sons. Stress incontinence is a common condition for middle-aged women and young men. This occurs when there is an unexpected leakage of urine caused by pressure or sudden muscle contractions on the bladders. It often happens during exercise, heavy lifting, coughing or sneezing, but it can also come from childbirth. Good news, this kind of urinary incontinence is treatable 90% of the time! Now that you know what causes this condition, you may be wondering how do you treat urinary incontinence? If you are a woman, you’ll be happy to learn more about Juliet. HOW TO TREAT URINARY INCONTINENCE? The underlying causes of urinary incontinence have the key to solve it: a restoration of the connective tissues. Juliet, a powerful non-invasive treatment will dramatically improve the symptoms of urinary incontinence after the first session. JULIET: A POWERFUL URINARY INCONTINENCE TREATMENT Juliet, dubbed the feminine laser, is a powerful handheld device that radiates a grade Erbi17
um YAG laser. When inserted into the vagina, the laser generates a painless controlled burn that causes inflammation in the vaginal walls. This inflammation stimulates the production of new collagen. The vagina returns to its original functionality at the same time it improves the tone of the pelvic muscles. The results? Lubrication, elasticity, and softness! WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR APPOINTMENT? The best thing is that although Juliet is a powerful and quick-acting technology, the downsides or inconveniences are non-existent! During your 40-minute consultation, an expert in vaginal rejuvenation, such as our very own Dr. Javier Saldaña, will help you feel safe and confident. Since the procedure is painless, you won’t need any anesthesia and the recovery time is minimal, so you could even schedule your appointment during your lunch break! Generally, patients need around 3 sessions, but after only one appointment, you will feel a dramatic reduction in urinary leakage and urgency! As an additional benefit, Juliet decreases vaginal dryness thus reducing painful intercourse!

After all, you’ve probably been wanting to do this for a long time. What if you don’t like the final result? What if it looks too big or not big enough? What if it doesn’t look natural? In order to help ease that anxiety, apart from having the best surgeons in the region, we offer patients a revolutionary technology called Vectra 3D. Our surgeons use Vectra 3D Imaging as a vital tool to help plan the surgery and provide an accurate representation of how a patient will look after the dressings are gone and the swelling has vanished. But don’t just take it from us! We asked and here are 3 reasons patients loved using Vectra 3D during their consultation prior to surgery. 1. “Vectra was quick and easy and made all the difference! I was sure I wanted a Facelift, but the thought of looking like a super-stretched version of myself filled me with dread. By using Vectra 3D, I was able to envision how the final result would look.

I was able to look at how different implant sizes would look on my body. Losing a large amount of weight, whether you did it with the help of bariatric surgery and a healthy diet or with just diet and exercise, is a huge step towards being healthy and something that should always be celebrated. At VIDA Wellness and Beauty, we believe one of the most rewarding way to celebrate is to consider the help of an expert: a post-weight
Considering that every patient will have different needs regarding sagging skin, we’ve tried to answer some of the Q&A’s that will help you navigate postweight loss plastic surgery.
SKIN REMOVAL SURGERY:
A MUST READ loss body contouring plastic surgeon. Thanks to skin removal surgery, patients can fully enjoy their slimmer bodies! SKIN REMOVAL SURGERY AFTER WEIGHT LOSS? When a person’s weight fluctuates massively, the skin loses its elasticity. We get patients who are incredibly frustrated because, after all of their hard work, they feel they simply cannot get the body they deserve. Once your skin has lost its capacity to shrink back to a smaller size and defined shape, there is little you can do on 22
your own. This is when skin removal surgery after weight loss becomes necessary. Skin removal surgery is not a single procedure, but rather a combination of cosmetic surgeries designed to tone, define and contour different areas of the body. Some patients need a Lower Body Lift, which will tone your abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. You can also have an Upper Body Lift, which focuses on your breasts, back, and arms. Other procedures to consider include a full tummy tuck surgery, a neck lift or a vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Once you schedule a consultation with one of our VIDA surgeons, you can talk about the areas of your body you’d like to improve and customize your skin removal surgery. THE ‘HOWS’ AND ‘WHATS’ OF SKIN REMOVAL SURGERY.
How long does skin removal surgery take? After talking with your surgeon and deciding on the amount of skin to be removed and from wich areas, your surgeon can give you an estimate of how long your surgery will be. For some patients it can be 2 hours, for some patients it can take 6 to 7 hours. All of the procedures are entirely personalized! Moreover, VIDA surgeons know that you can’t rush perfection. Trust that your surgeon will plan every second with your well-being in mind, to give you an end result that will instantly boost your mood. Our plastic surgeons work closely with the anesthesiologists to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the entire procedure. How painful is skin removal surgery? Patients feel quite anxious when it comes to pain. Well, to ease your concerns, let’s start by giving you the great news: during the procedure itself, you won’t feel a thing. That’s right. Nothing. Nada. You will receive medications to keep you comfy, and depending on how much you’re having done, a combination of sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia will be used. Once the anesthesia effect wears off, you might be a bit uncomfortable, but that’s what brings us to the next point! How is the skin removal surgery recovery process?
ONCE YOUR SKIN HAS LOST ITS CAPACITY TO SHRINK BACK TO A SMALLER SIZE AND DEFINED SHAPE, THERE IS LITTLE YOU CAN DO ON YOUR OWN. THIS IS WHEN SKIN REMOVAL SURGERY AFTER WEIGHT LOSS BECOMES NECESSARY. As a general rule, you should schedule at least two weeks off from work. Regardless of the procedures you end up having, during the first two weeks of recovery you need to focus on healing. Take two weeks off from working out, lifting heavy objects and any other vigorous activity that could jeopardize your recovery. The first couple of days you might notice swelling, soreness and bruising, but your surgeon will prescribe you pain medication to keep you comfortable. Keep up with resting, taking short walks around your house, drinking lots of water and eating healthy. Doing so will speed up your recovery. During recovery, if asked to wear a compression garmentdo it! Post-surgery compression garments help support the body, keep you comfortable and protect the treated area.
Will I have scars after skin removal surgery? Scars are an inevitable part of having cosmetic surgery, but not all scars are the same. Depending on whether you focus on the upper or lower region of your body, incisions will be in a different location. VIDA surgeons plan your procedure strategically, including where to place incisions. The priority is to make them as invisible as possible, so you might be left with a scar on the lower part of your abdomen or your groin -areas that can be hidden by underwear or regular swimsuits. If you combine this with good care of your incisions, such as not scratching them and avoiding direct sun exposure, they’ll fade considerably. How much does it cost to remove excess skin? 23
Can my skin removal surgery be covered by insurance? Unfortunately, since skin removal surgery is considered an elective procedure, finding an insurance policy that will cover it is tricky (if not impossible). The good news is that you can save a couple thousand dollars by choosing us and we can give you tips on how to pay for your plastic surgeries with a financing option that suits your needs. The final price of your skin removal surgery will be determined by the amount of excess skin you have. At VIDA, an average price for a lower body lift is of $5,600 USD, including the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, and medication. The best way to determine the total cost for you is through a free, one-onone virtual consultation with our surgeons.

5 POST-SURGERY QUICK AND EASY TIPS
decrease your risk of more serious complications, like deep vein thrombosis.
4
TAKE IT EASY. Now, while you might be clear to even take brisk walks soon after surgery, don’t rush yourself into other physical activity. Ask your surgeon during a follow-up consultation when you can return to more demanding activities, like running, weight-lifting or swimming.

I
f you have a cosmetic surgery coming up you must be super excited. It’s possible that you might also be wondering about recovery. When you follow your surgeon’s instructions to a tee, recovery from any surgery is usually a straightforward process. However, there are some simple things you can do to help your body heal faster, feel better or make your recovery period more comfortable after any surgery.
1
DO WHAT THE SURGEON SAYS. Yes, we can never stress this enough. Even if your BFF had the same surgery you did and she has
great suggestions to help in your recovery, remember: they are suggestions. Follow your surgeon’s instructions first and check if doing anything else would help you.
2
GET A LYMPHATIC MASSAGE. Pamper yourself and help your body heal with a lymphatic massage. Also called lymphatic drainage, this massage technique helps move fluid buildup on treated areas. With a lymphatic massage, your massage technician can help reduce swelling from the area and help bruises disappear faster. This massage is perfect for post-surgery patients since it is gentle
and utilizes precise pressure on your treated areas. Other massage techniques such as Swedish or Deep Tissue could cause you more harm than good and be painful.
3
GET MOVING. It’s easy to let yourself doze off after surgery. After all, you probably have loved ones ready to help and you could easily spend all day in bed. As tempting as this sounds, remember that if your surgeon tells you to take short walks after surgery, it’s for your own good. Walking after surgery is a very simple way to prevent constipation, decrease swelling and even
24
DRINK AND EAT HEALTHILY. Perhaps, right after surgery, you might be out of appetite. If you’ve been lying down for a long time, you could also not feel thirsty. While this is normal, one thing that is crucial to help in your recovery is staying hydrated and eating properly. By doing this, you can help your body pass anesthesia better and stay strong during your recovery.

For some guys, having larger and softer breasts, or “man boobs” is a result of Gynecomastia, a hormonal imbalance that causes male breast tissue to swell, resembling a female form. This condition cannot be improved by losing weight or increasing your muscle mass and can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Our expert plastic surgeons can perform male breast reduction surgery by removing the excess tissue, liposuction or a combination of both, leaving you with a flatter, more defined chest. • Hair Transplant. Excessive hair loss and pattern baldness affect men every day, causing them to lose confidence and look older. While for both men and women it’s normal to start losing hair thickness around age 50, some men can start experiencing substantial hair loss as young as their early 20s. Thanks to the

On the other hand, the results you’ll get from abdominal etching are sure to blow your mind. Think of a defined torso, with laser cut abs and strong, well-defined obliques. •P ectoral Implants. Men are getting plastic surgery every day, why shouldn’t you?

ith thousands of happy patients over the last 30 years, we have many reasons to celebrate Cosmed Clinic. It’s nice to look back and realize how a place that has changed so many lives began with a simple mission. We heard from Dr. Quiroz himself, our founder, who told us what motivated him to build this dream. CosMed and VIDA Wellness and Beauty began with Dr. Alejandro Quiroz and his wife, Lisette Quiroz. After receiving trusted medical care at CosMed year after year by some of the best doctors in the world, patients began asking for referrals and recommendations for other services, and Dr. and Lisette Quiroz decided to expand their offering. Dr. Q LISTENS, that’s right he listens and does not push you into anything. He discusses the procedures and options that are available for the issues that bother you. Although he chooses to practice in Mexico (which is good for us because it is affordable in Mexico, only $5,500 for his surgical fee for my lower body lift), Dr. Q is licensed in both Mexico and California. He speaks perfect English so nothing is lost in translation. That was not the issue with a lot of other doctors I interviewed in Mexico. I felt confident in his ability to provide me an outcome that would make me happy, and he did!! Don’t be afraid to go to Mexico, be afraid to go to a surgeon that doesn’t do a good job. My best friend came to Dr. Q in July to re-do the same lower body lift she had done the year before by a well known doctor in New York City. However you came to the Clinic, know that you have been truly blessed. Dr. Q is a doctor of quality and a man of integrity. Thank you!!!
I don’t even know where to begin! Dr. Castaneda did an amazing job on my face! My whole life I hated my face because I had no chin! I also had big cheeks that I disliked. I had Dr. Castaneda remove the Buccal Fat from my cheeks and do a chin implant. The pain was very minimal. The surgery center was extremely clean and everyone was really nice. I would recommend him for any surgical procedure!! He was very good at follow up to make sure I was okay and healing well! Thank you Dr. Castaneda!

Cosmed Clinic and Dr. Alejandro Quiroz are #1 in my opinion. I made the decision to travel to Cosmed after having several consultations in the area I live. To be honest, I was just not comfortable with the information I was given. Since I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Quiroz 25 years ago and travel to Mexico for a procedure I thought I would do some research and locate him again. I was excited to find that he had a practice in Tijuana and I contacted him through the Cosmed website. I could not be happier with my decision and my results. Traveling for any reason can be stressful but the Cosmed staff did everything possible to make the entire process a pleasure. The facility is beautiful and all the staff are pleasure to work with. From the first contact to the final visit before returning home, I honestly can not recall a time of having and second thoughts. Results from my procedures are amazing and my mother was so pleased with them that she opted to have work done also. The care and compassion that Dr. Quiroz gives to his patients is wonderful, he truly has THE BEST bedside manner of any doctor I have known. I look forward to my next opportunity to visit Cosmed.

I will always be grateful to Dr. Quiroz and Dr. Fuentes. After I had all my surgeries, I felt like I got my life back, and I found a new confidence in myself. I look 15 to 20 years younger now and many people don’t recognize me when I walk by. Now I enjoy my life with my husband (who is very proud of me) and my grandchildren. We will be retiring in a few years , and have a lot to look forward to.
“My mother recently underwent the Bariatrics surgery in July of 2017. She has since lost about 50lbs and feels (and looks) amazing. I am so happy that she chose Vida to have this procedure done because they were absolutely amazing and the process was seamless! I did not have to worry as she was clearly in great hands from start to finish.”
“Their staff and doctors make you feel welcomed, and take time to answer your questions and doubts.”
“I can’t say enough great things about the Bariatrics team at VIDA Wellness and Beauty. I have to admit I was a little apprehensive about going to Tijuana Mexico for my Gastric Sleeve procedure, but I was so wrong! From beginning to end, I was reassured that I was safe, and in great hands.”

SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION, AKA
‘The hair tattoo’
S
uffering from hair loss is not uncommon. Thousands of men and women all over the world deal with some kind of hair loss or balding. The good news is that there are several treatment options that can help. One of them is the revolutionary non-invasive method you probably haven’t heard of yet: Scalp MicroPigmentation, or the hair tattoo. Let’s do a quick Q&A about this ultra-effective treatment that should be on your mind and on your head! Q: What is Scalp Micropigmentation? A: Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-invasive procedure performed on an area of the scalp that has suffered from hair-loss or scarring. Through the use of microneedles, we “tattoo” pigment into the scalp in a pattern that recreates the appearance of individual capillary follicles, creating an illusion of fuller hair.
Q: How is it done? A: Your procedure can be done in one or more sessions, depending on the extent of your hair loss. While doing the treatment, your scalp micropigmentation technician will use microneedles to layer pigment dots on your scalp. The dots are tiny and are layered in a way to resemble shaved hair. Your technician will work with you in order to achieve the hair “density” you want.
BECAUSE IT IS A NONINVASIVE PROCEDURE, ALMOST EVERYONE IS A GOOD CANDIDATE.
Q: Is everyone a candidate for Scalp Micropigmentation? A: Because it is a noninvasive procedure, almost everyone is a good candidate. However, prospective scalp micropigmentation patients are advised to schedule a consultation to determine if the procedure will work well for them and to discuss their desired results. Scalp micropigmentation can also benefit patients who have undergone micro hair transplants to add more density to the hair’s appearance or define the hairline.
Q: Is it painful? A: Though not entirely painful, it can be somewhat uncomfortable. Since the needles used are tiny, the amount of pain you feel should be tolerable. If you are experiencing too much discomfort during your treatment, don’t be afraid to tell your technician. Q: How can I prepare for my first session of SMP? A: You’ll receive a comprehensive list of personalized in36
Q: Is there any downtime after? What can I expect the days following the procedure? A: No. This is a non-invasive procedure, so there really is no need for downtime. Some patients will feel a some discomfort the first few days due to itching, redness, and dryness in the area. This is completely normal and it all goes away on its own. Q: How long do the results last? A: Depending on the patient’s skin and lifestyle, Scalp Micropigmentation can last anywhere from 1 to 2 years before any touch-ups are needed. Q: Is there anything I can do to extend the results of my Scalp Micropigmentation? A: The first week after the procedure it is important that patients minimize sun exposure, swimming, and using saunas or steam rooms. Generally protecting the area from prolonged sun exposure will go a long way afterward. Q: What is the cost of getting Scalp Micropigmentation? A: Costs will vary depending on the amount of hair loss and the results the patient wants. For a standard “shaved” look on the whole head, patients need 3 to 4 sessions, with each session costing $400 dollars. The best way to get a personalized estimate is with a consultation.

The ‘secret’ to those patients’ success stories is also due in part to their preparedness during recovery. If you’re exploring bariatric surgery, let’s make sure you’ll be prepared for what you to expect after your surgery day. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE STOMACH DURING BARIATRIC SURGERY? Gastric Sleeve- During a gastric sleeve surgery, the surgeon removes about 80% of your stomach. This procedure is called a sleeve because once you’re done, you are left with a small sleeve-shaped stomach pouch (aha!). This small stomach restricts the amount of food you eat and how hungry you feel. Gastric Bypass- With a gastric bypass, a surgeon leaves only a small portion of your stomach as functional. The doctor 37
IF YOU’RE EXPLORING BARIATRIC SURGERY, LET’S MAKE SURE YOU’LL BE PREPARED FOR WHAT YOU TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR SURGERY DAY. then proceeds to attach your new small stomach to a middle section of the intestine, therefore bypassing part of it. The portion of your intestine that is bypassed is responsible for absorbing nutrients and calories. Since you won’t be actively using this section of your intestine when you eat, you’ll naturally absorb fewer calories, helping you to lose weight. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM BARIATRIC SURGERY? 48 hrs post op: After the operation, your surgeon will likely want you to stay 1 or 2 nights at the hospital. During this period, it’s normal if you feel pain in your abdomen and mid-body area. You might notice some swelling in the area, but with pain medication prescribed by your doctor, the amount of discomfort you experience should be tolerable. 2 weeks post op: You should be feeling pretty good at this point. Incisions heal around this time and your new stomach should be getting used to your new diet.

4 to 6 weeks post op: If you are excited to continue your weight loss journey by working out and being more active, you’ll be happy to know that you may be cleared to exercise about 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery. Talk to your doctor for guidance and listen to your body.
WHAT ARE THE BEST VITAMINS TO TAKE AFTER GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY? Gastric Sleeve- Since gastric sleeve does not bypass the small intestine, the way you absorb calories and vitamins is not affected. As long as you eat balanced and healthy meals, even as you continue to lose weight, there is no reason to think you’ll need a lot of supplements other than a multivitamin and calcium. According to what your lab tests show, your bariatric surgeon might recommend extra supplements.
HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE TO BE AWAY FROM WORK AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY? Depending on how strenuous or demanding your daily activities are, you can expect to take 1 to 3 weeks off work. If your regular job requires you to do any heavy lifting, you might need to take a bit longer than that. Your bariatric surgeon will be able to tell you when you can resume those activities and what extra precautions to take. WHAT DIETARY CHANGES DO I NEED TO MAKE AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY? Dietary changes are the most critical aspect of bariatric surgery recovery. The exact timing will depend on your surgeon and how your stomach is healing. However, you can expect your dietary restrictions to look like this: • The first week after surgery, your diet will be liquid-based, since you’ll have to be careful about not causing pain or difficulty digesting. • Most patients start re-introducing solid (but still soft!) food 7 to 10 days after surgery. • You’ll slowly begin reintroducing more types of food after 3 weeks and can begin eating a normal, healthy diet about a month after the surgery.
THE DIET YOUR DOCTOR PRESCRIBES YOU FOR YOUR RECOVERY WILL BECOME A GUIDELINE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. But, as any successful bariatric patient can tell you, the diet your doctor prescribes you for your recovery will become a guideline for the rest of your life. To lose and keep the weight off, bariatric patients need to eat and maintain a healthy and balanced diet, otherwise, they can regain the weight.
Gastric Bypass- A feature of the gastric bypass is that it helps you lose weight at a malabsorptive level and a restrictive level. While the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass both restrict the amount of food you can eat, only the gastric bypass limits the calories and nutrients your body absorbs. This means you need to be more cognizant of the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy. All gastric bypass patients will be put on vitamin and mineral supplements after the surgery, including a multivitamin, iron, calcium, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and thiamine. Keep in mind this is something you’ll likely have to do for the rest of your life, even after your weight stabilizes. HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN YOU EXPECT TO LOSE WITH BARIATRIC SURGERY? If a patient follows a healthy diet and exercises regularly, both procedures can be very successful. Gastric Sleeve - Patients lose weight at a steady rate, though slower when compared to other bariatric procedures. On average, gastric sleeve patients may lose 60 to 70 percent of excess weight within 18 months. Gastric Bypass - Weight loss after gastric bypass happens relatively fast, with patients losing 60 to 80 percent of excess weight during the first year. Regardless of the procedure you and your bariatric surgeon decide is best for you, if you are committed to following dietary and post-surgery guidelines, not only will you lose weight, but you will also improve your overall health and quality of life, and that’s something worth celebrating!

Getting ready for Surgery Day
I
f you’ve already gone through the process of researching and choosing your doctor, completing your consultation, and scheduling your surgery date, here’s a simple checklist of things you should consider before the big day. WHAT TO DO IN ORDER TO BE PREPARED FOR SURGERY: • Call your surgeon and ask any last minute questions. He’ll be more than happy to ease your mind. • Remember to stop taking any medications if your doctor instructed you to do so. For your safety, talk to your surgeon ahead of time about anything you’re taking, including over-the-counter vitamins and supplements. • Get a good night’s sleep! Even if you’re awake with excitement, it’s better if you are relaxed and rested.
WHAT TO PACK IF YOU’RE STAYING OVERNIGHT AT OUR RECOVERY BOUTIQUE: • Pack lounge clothes or long pajamas. Bring something you feel ultra cozy in. Ideally, you should bring clothes you can sleep in but feel comfortable wearing if you decide to take a short walk around the premises or enjoy a meal in the dining room. • Personal toiletries. Bring a small toiletry bag with all of the essentials you might need: toothbrush, toothpaste, your favorite comb, shampoo, an extra pampering body lotion, etc. • Any medications you take regularly and pain medication prescribed by your doctor for after the surgery. If your surgeon tells you that you can take an over-thecounter medicine like Aspirin or Ibuprofen in case you feel any pain, it’s a good idea to
buy it in advance and have it with you in case you need it. • Entertainment material. In your bag, remember to pack your favorite book, magazine or download an audiobook to keep you entertained. Some of our patients are very excited to see the first results from their procedure and can’t sleep from the anticipation. • Clean, comfy clothes for your trip home. For most surgeries, lose pants made from soft fabrics are ideal. If you had surgery in your face, abdomen or breast, bring a button down shirt that you can carefully put on and remove without irritating your sutures. • All your medical supplies as instructed by your surgeon like extra dressings and compression garments. THINGS TO PREPARE BEFORE SURGERY SO YOU CAN RELAX AND RECOVER: 39
• Someone to help out. Ask your surgeon and our nursing staff about any special recovery instructions you need to follow. Remember that no matter the surgery, you might need help with certain things such as cooking, cleaning, driving the kids to school, or changing your wound dressings. • A clean room to get back to. In order to make your recovery comfortable, a very simple thing you can do before your surgery day is leave your room ready. Think of clean sheets, extra pillows, or a good selection of movies. Those little details will make your first few days out of surgery more enjoyable. Doing these things will help you feel better prepared and more relaxed, so when the day of your surgery comes you can focus on yourself.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE MEDICAL CHECK-UP
I
f you’ve ever asked yourself, ‘Do I really need a yearly medical check-up?’ The answer is yes, yes you do. Even if you think you feel perfectly healthy. It’s shocking to realize how many adults go to the dentist once or twice a year and take their kids to the pediatrician without missing a beat, but never seem to find the time to schedule a comprehensive medical check-up for themselves. Small pains and aches here and there? There are things that only a doctor can evaluate. Which is why we want to talk about the Annual Checkup you can get right here at VIDA Wellness and Beauty Center. We’re not talking about your standard “measure-your-blood-pressure and stand-on-the-scale” check-up you can get at a local walk-in pharmacy. We’re talking about the comprehensive check-ups offered by our very own Dr. Joseph A. Jimenez. As a specialist in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care, Dr. Jimenez provides patients two personalized options for your medical check-up:
diogram, echocardiogram, abdominal ultrasound, and a pulmonary function test. After either of these checkups, Dr. Jimenez will go over the results with you and create an action plan: what are your goals health-wise and what do you need to do to achieve them. If needed, Dr. Jimenez can refer you to a specialist, such as a registered dietitian. As if that weren’t enough, during your appointment Dr. Jimenez can ‘upgrade’ your check-up experience through regenerative medicine.
“WE HAVE NATURAL MECHANISMS TO HEAL OURSELVES, SUCH AS THE ONES GENERATED FROM OUR BONE MARROW AND STEM CELLS.”

One example of the power of regenerative medicine is PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, which is created from your blood and bone marrow. As Dr. Jimenez explains, PRP is like an espresso shot for your body. He can inject it to activate regeneration and stimulate your body’s natural healing mechanisms. This is a great treatment if you have aches and pains in any area of your body, such as your joints. The combination of preventative care and regenerative medicine is guaranteed to give you a medical check-up experience, unlike anything you’ve had before. What are you waiting for?

“
A happy patient makes me happy”, is the phrase that Dr. Fuentes always keeps in mind when he’s working. As we sat down for a quick chat with Dr. Fuentes to discuss some of the latest trends in facial rejuvenation, he shared with us his moto and some useful tips to look OUR BEST AT ANY AGE. Q: How did you get interested in Plastic Surgery? A: We were studying harelip reconstructive surgery during a surgery lecture in my 3rd year of medical school. The topic really got my attention, and that’s when my interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery was born. To me, aesthetic surgery is like a piece of art that carries the signature of its author, the plastic surgeon.

Q: What is your favorite type of procedure? A: I genuinely enjoy all kinds of surgery, although some are more challenging than others. A procedure that I really enjoy is rhinoplasty, which is a very complex surgery because it has a focal point in the appearance of the patient. The fact that every patient is so different and every nose so unique makes it more rewarding, which is why every rhinoplasty (nose job) is a challenge and one of my favorites. Q: What is the factor that distinguishes you like a plastic surgeon? A: I’m honest. I like to give quality time to my patients. I give them perspectives and real digital projections of what can be achieved with surgery. The patients come because

This will ensure optimal results every time.

Then, the Thermatip is placed on the target area, and radiofrequency energy creates a uniform heating effect in the deep layer of the skin. MICROBLADING: A Q&A ON ACHIEVING PERFECT EYEBROWS
ome people are granted glorious, perfect, face-framing eyebrows. If I were one of those lucky few, I wouldn’t be writing this article. My reality is that my eyebrows are on the average side. I’ve always wanted the kind of eyebrows that just frame your face nicely and make everything look effortless on you. (I do believe eyebrows are that important.) So, if you’re not born with perfect eyebrows, what do you do? Give up? Tweeze, draw and fill every day?
I’ve done both. Some days, I’m just not up for making the extra effort of drawing the perfect eyebrows I simply don’t have. Other days, I’m going to the beach with my friends and I can’t risk having my makeup smudged all over my face. I was close to giving up when I finally came across Microblading. Microblading, a tattoo-like procedure that is nothing like those eyebrow tattoos that make you look like a weird mannequin from the 80s, was the best solution. The results I got from Micro-
blading are almost too good to be true. After visiting VIDA Wellness and Beauty to get Microblading done, I put together this Q&A to explain once and for all, why Microblading is what you need to keep your eyebrows on point 24/7. Q: What is Microblading? A: Microblading is a form of tattooing. Unlike regular eyebrow tattoos, with Microblading the certified technician simulates natural eyebrow hairs. 45
This is a precise method of tattooing that will provide you with super fine hair strokes in a color that matches your natural brows and skin tone. Q: How does Microblading work? A: Microblading is done with a hand-held, specialized, blade-like device. With this, a pigment is transferred to your skin with very subtle and natural-looking strokes. Q: Can everyone get Microblading?

WORDS FROM THE EXPERTS: prior to your session, as your Microblading specialist will properly shape your brows before applying the pigments. Avoid Retinol products, blood thinning medications such as aspirin, and alcohol 72 hours prior to the appointment.
THIS IS A PRECISE METHOD OF TATTOOING THAT WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH SUPER FINE HAIR STROKES IN A COLOR THAT MATCHES YOUR NATURAL BROWS AND SKIN TONE.
A: While Microblading is a very safe procedure, each person’s skin and complexion are different. The best thing is to schedule a consultation in order to determine if you are a candidate for Microblading.
Q: Does Microblading hurt? A: Though it is mildly uncomfortable, your technician will apply a topical anesthetic or numbing cream to keep discomfort at bay. It’s important to remember that everyone’s skin sensitivity and pain tolerance is different. If at any point you feel too much discomfort, tell your Microblading technician.
Q: How can I be best prepared for my Microblading session? A: Allow plenty of time for your session. Do not tend to or mess with your eyebrows
Q: How long do results last? A: Depending on your skin and your lifestyle, your eyebrows can last anywhere from 9 months to a year.
46
Q: What can I expect after my Microblading session? How’s the healing process? A: Right after your appointment you can expect the area to have some minor redness, and feel tingly and sensitive to the touch. You will also develop a scab that you must let fall on its own, 5 to 7 days after the procedure. Q: How can I prolong the results of Microblading? A: Some simple things you can do to extend the life of your Microblading is protecting your eyebrows from the sun, salt water, and steam. Always apply SPF and use a hat when spending the day outside. Q: What’s the cost of getting Microblading? A: The cost of getting Microblading at VIDA is $390 USD.
DR. DE LA FUENTE ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPA AND A MEDISPA
H
ave you ever felt like you just needed a spa day? Nothing too complicated- just a nice, relaxing spa day! Lately, I had been feeling like I needed a dose of indulgence and some help looking extra special before spring break, so I planned a visit to MediSpa by Cosmed. We all know that a visit to the spa can do wonders for your skin, body, and overall wellness. But as I learned, if you want to make your spa day even more beneficial and leave with long-lasting results, why not go to a MediSpa instead? I asked Cosmed’s expert dermatologist, Dr. Alberto de la Fuente, to explain the main differences between a regular day spa and a medispa. Here’s what he had to say: “A day spa is designed to pamper you. Without any medical benefits, after a visit to a day spa, you’ll probably feel your skin softer, more hydrated and you’ll feel relaxed. While this is great, most of the time, a visit to a day spa is just that: relaxing for the day. There are no real, long term, medical benefits.” I’m as keen as any girl to visit a spa and indulge in relaxation, but I wanted to make the most of my visit and leave with some real benefits. For starters, I was getting tired of
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR SPA DAY EVEN MORE BENEFICIAL AND LEAVE WITH LONG-LASTING RESULTS, WHY NOT GO TO A MEDISPA INSTEAD? my saggy cheeks and crow’s feet. Would a visit to a regular day spa help with that? As Dr. de la Fuente helped me understand, probably not. Not in the long term at least. So I asked Dr. de la Fuente to explain how a visit to a MediSpa would be different and to name some of its advantages. “A MediSpa on the other hand, apart from offering the best things from a regular spa such as massages, scrubs, and body wraps, also offers minimally invasive and non-invasive treatments that are backed by medicine,” said Dr. de la Fuente, adding “In addition to offering a pampering experience, a Medispa also focuses on getting the best cosmetic results through treatments such as dermal fillers and Botox, or IPL and other laser treatments.”
Another great thing to know about MediSpas? They offer treatments to help during your recovery from surgery and aid in your healing process. Only a MediSpa will offer you real benefits trusted by medical professionals. I’m all set for my visit: a body wrap, a massage, and a consultation for Botox. My advice? Next time you’re feeling

like a spa day, I recommend choosing a MediSpa. A MediSpa will offer the widest variety of treatment options and all are administered and overseen by a licensed medical professional. (Who would want needles inserted in their face by someone who’s not licensed? That’s right. No one. For your safety and best use of your time and money, MediSpa it is!)

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLERS
W
hen I got tired of the wrinkles on my face, I decided to visit my favorite beauty destination: VIDA Wellness and Beauty Center, in Tijuana. I knew I wanted a noninvasive treatment because I had no time for downtime, so I explored different injectable treatments. So, I did a little research to better understand the difference between Botox and Fillers, the most popular injectables available. At a first glance, they seem similar - after all, they’re both injected, they’re non-invasive, temporary, convenient, and they’re incredibly effective. When applied by a licensed professional, both can help boost and rejuvenate your fea-

tures in a matter of minutes. I learned how they are different and certain things to consider before booking an appointment with a plastic surgeon or licensed dermatologist, the only ones fully trained to administer these treatments. BOTOX VS FILLERS Botox is a brand name for botulinum neurotoxin. For cosmetic purposes, doctors inject it in order to temporarily immobilize or relax certain muscles that cause wrinkles. Other brands of botulinum neurotoxin available include Dysport and Xeomin. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, rejuvenate your look by filling those wrinkles. If this sounds a bit vague, it helps to
understand how you get to a place when you actually need a filler. Our skin has natural collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which keep the skin glowing, elastic and hydrated. As we age, our body’s ability to produce more of these substances decreases. This means that our skin is likely to sag, become dry and develop stubborn folds and wrinkles over time. Dermal fillers, which either contain hyaluronic acid or collagen, fill those folds of skin, just like the natural body does at a younger age. The most popular brands of dermal fillers available are Juvederm and Radiesse. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLERS They both have the purpose of reducing the appearance 48
of lines and wrinkles, but the main difference can be summed up in the wrinkles they can treat and how they do it. Botox is injected into the muscles. Therefore, Botox and other botulinum neurotoxins, target wrinkles caused by facial expressions, such as your frown lines or your crow’s feet when you smile. Fillers are great when combating wrinkles that don’t accentuate with muscle movement, such as lip lines. Dermal fillers are also great when restoring volume to the face, like plumping up your lips or cheeks. JUVEDERM AND BOTOX: WHICH ONE IS BETTER? This was the first question I had, which one would help me the most? Ultimately, as I discovered, you should consult a cosmet-
ic surgeon or a dermatologist who specializes in injectables in order to figure out if a botulinum neurotoxin or a dermal filler is better for YOU. Here are some things I considered: If your wrinkles increase with expressions, Botox is probably what you’re looking for. Deeper lines that are there even when you’re not gesturing? Fillers. Another thing to remember is that these treatments are very gentle and safe, so it’s completely possible to use a combination of both in order to give an effective touch up to your whole face. Here are some quick tips for problem areas:
replace them quickly enough. Winner? A dermal filler, such as Juvederm can add youthful fullness to your lips. Botox vs Fillers for Frown and Forehead Lines - Every time you raise your eyebrows, frown or squint, you are contracting muscles. Over time, you’ll likely develop horizontal lines in your forehead. Winner? Depends on your lines. For most patients, it is best when Botox or Dysport and a dermal filler, such as Restylane or Juvederm are combined. The botulinum neurotoxin relaxes the overactive muscle and a filler will add volume to the wrinkle, fading it. Botox vs Fillers for Crow’s Feet - A life well lived will likely result in crow’s feet - sunny days, hysterical laughter and smiles tend to leave a mark. Those tiny lines near your eyes can become permanent with time. Winner? Botox or Dysport, with the option to add a dermal filler to maximize the results. BOTOX, DYSPORT, XEOMIN, JUVEDERM, RADIESSE...WHICH WILL BE BEST? Each option has pros and cons depending on you and the areas you are looking to treat. I was able to determine which would work best for me after my one-on-one appointment at VIDA Wellness and Beauty. I felt reassured by their years of experience helping thousands of patients look their best with injectables.
