[PREFACE] Following is the compilation of academic architectural projects by me. They not only represent best of my works but also characterize my philosophies and understanding about architecture. I tend to perceive architecture as a piece of art created when multiple elements come together to form aesthetic functional volumes which have endless possibilities. Through this portfolio I put forward my craving to learn more about newer technologies and design styles. I also take up this opportunity to claim that all the drawings, renders and ideas contained in this portfolio, unless otherwise specified, are done solely by me, to the best of my knowledge.

As multiple small urban interventions result in the overall development of the city, similarly, multiple unsolved problems result in overall degradation of social and cultural wellbeing of the community. In case of Strip District, a chain of problems is observed resulting into continuously increasing crime rates. It is of mosvt importance that this chain is broken at as many links as possible. To address the issue of increasing crime rates, links such as, uncontrolled flooding, under-developed river banks, unemployment and grey activities must be targeted through urban planning and development. An Urban Foundry for the ‘Internet of Things’ is thus proposed. This unprecedented program will act as an example for the future development of the urban fabric of the city of Pittsburgh.

The whirpool effect that is generated at the confluence of the transition nodes, generate a spiral/ helical motion. This motion drives the form development of the IOT building. A continious spiral floor slab is derived from this helical form. This continious floor slab gives the effect of infinite space and allows designing of flexible spaces in between various functions.

As energy travels from one point to other, and light reaches out from that source; this wave in the planning acts as an axes for the people to move along and towards the IOT. While doing so the wave generates several pockets of undulating landscapes and flexible spaces which are utilized for various functions. The IOT - Urban Foundry resonates waves of development by setting new industry standards and symbolizes the growth of a new era. As developing an Iconic Urban Foundry is the focus of this project, the IOT stands at the end of this wave and between the two bridges creating curiosity and gives more architectural value to the structure.

India has three sides of the border open to the sea, yet the cruise and ship business has not been explored thoroughly. This thesis project explores the possible proposal of an Overseas passenger cruise terminal in Mumbai, the financial capital of India.

Structural Grid The form of the structure divides the column layout in three zones. The first and third are identical wings and the second comprises of the central block, the core of the building. Wings: Both the wings of the structure have 15m+15m floor heights along with distance between columns ranging from 7m to 21m. To support the slabs of these spans, a dual support system is incorporated. The Core: The core is designed in such a way that it requires minimum or no additional structural support apart from the mandatory heavy reinforcement columns and beams. The 105m X 30m span is divided by a grid of columns at 10m c/c on either axis.

Redefining the city’s skyline is a step one towards the development of entire city. The words ‘Ace’ meaning ‘first and the only one’ and ‘Obelisk’ meaning ‘a tapering stone pillar, typically having a square or rectangular cross section, set up as a landmark’ suggest the importance and value of this structure.

FLOOR SIXTY-ONE The top nine floors are dedicated to a business class resort. The sixty-first floor also has a helipad.
FIRE STAIRCASE
FLOOR FOURTY-FOUR The floor space is divided into two, 460 sq. m. - Class ‘A’ offices. The intended buyers for this space are corporate firms.
FLOOR TWENTY-THREE Various options for small scale offices with floor space ranging from 170 to 230 sq. m.
FLOOR SEVEN All floors upto 7 are occupied by the mall and separate vertical transition systems are provided within the mall for internal movement.
FLOOR ZERO The central transition core divides the building into 2 parts at the Floor Zero level. Two separate entrances lead to the Mall and Reception Lobby respectively.
Structural Stratergies The form is derived from the human foot which is the foundation of our bodies and very effectively supports comparatively larger loads with such less cross section resting on the ground. More over in case of extreme wind loads or seismic movements or deflection due to moment the form helps the building to stay firmly on ground and avoids overturning similar to how our feet would react if we were pushed from behind. The ‘bone’ i.e. the R.C.C. shear wall core acts like a Vertebral column by itself and is efficient enough to support cantilever slabs up to 2/3rd (15-18 meters) of it’s own depth (28 meters)
Lateral Stability System The concrete core provides the primary lateral load resisting system. These outrigger trusses are accommodated in 2-3 storey heights so as to reduce the cross section of the members and make this area usable. Indoor gardens with cafeteria and seating is provided in the lower parts whereas intermediate water reservoirs with transformer rooms are managed on upper levels. The increased loads due to the water reservoirs help in tackling the heavy wind loads rather than being of a concern to the vertical loading system. Cross Bracing All floors of the tower will be braced together with heavy duty structural steel sections. Cross bracing will help the structure to sway together in one direction or rather not. This system will convert all possible lateral loads and transfer them to the columns and in turn to the deep pile foundation.
Lift Stratergy Transporting large numbers of people up and down everyday through out the year requires well managed heavy duty lifts. A total of 15 lifts are provided for this purpose. Two sets of three lifts each stop only for class-B and class-A offices respectively. Two lifts are designed to stop directly on the helipad/sky cafĂŠ level. Further a set of 4 lifts is dedicated to the 5-star hotel. Three lifts are assigned to the mall section of the building. Two lifts that go directly up to the helipad/sky cafĂŠ level act as fire safe lifts incase of emergencies and travel between all floors below. These will be of great help to the fire fighters to control the fire in a reasonably short time period.
Intermediate plant rooms and associated gardens To tackle the issue of pumping water through 280 meters and having the risk of possible catastrophes and accidents, the tower is provided with 3 intermediate plant rooms. These levels contain centralized toilet exhaust air fans, stair/lifts pressurization and pressure relief ducts. These levels also contain water break tanks, sprinkler tanks, low voltage electrical switch gear, transformers, emergency lighting backups, etc. The transformer room will be naturally ventilated and equipped with smoke extraction systems. Local cooling may be provided if mechanical ventilation is not sufficient to maintain acceptable conditions. These floors will also have a 2 storey deep semi-indoor terraces which will act like break points between the vertical stretch.

‘Breathing Buildings’, is an approach to design that promotes open, volumetric, airy spaces that contribute in manipulating the behaviors of human beings by controlling the factors such as natural lighting and ventilation, orientation with respect to sun and winds, and other climatic factors.

Planning After identifying various zones, the layouts of all buildings are designed to represent a introvert planning. Multiple green pockets surround the buildings and glue one building function to another. This results in climate responsive behaviour of these democratic spaces. Effective usage of existing trees and waterbodies has promised to tackle the climate related problems. Adequate number of buffer zones between the structures allow the winds from the backwaters to flow unobstructed. Since the orientation of the site is E-W, all structures except the workshops have been designed to avoid direct sunlight from entering the interiors and inclined windows are provided where ever necessary. The workshop invite maximum day light and are provided with North-light trusses.
