As multiple small urban interventions result in the overall development of the city, similarly, multiple unsolved problems result in overall degradation of social and cultural wellbeing of the community. In case of Strip District, a chain of problems is observed resulting into continuously increasing crime rates. It is of most importance that this chain is broken at as many links as possible. To address the issue of increasing crime rates, links such as, uncontrolled flooding, under-developed river banks, unemployment and grey activities must be targeted through urban planning and development. An Urban Foundry for the ‘Internet of Things’ is thus proposed. This unprecedented program will act as an example for the future development of the urban fabric of the city of Pittsburgh.

The whirlpool effect that is generated at the confluence of the transition nodes, generate a spiral/ helical motion. This motion drives the form development of the IOT building. A continuous spiral floor slab is derived from this helical form. This continuous floor slab gives the effect of infinite space and allows designing of flexible spaces in between various functions. This infinite space effect opens out at the top level of the building into the 360 observatory that looks on to the entire city of Pittsburgh.

As energy travels from one point to other, and light reaches out from that source; this wave in the planning acts as an axes for the people to move along and towards the IOT. While doing so the wave generates several pockets of undulating landscapes and flexible spaces which are utilized for various functions. The IOT - Urban Foundry resonates waves of development by setting new industry standards and symbolizes the growth of a new era. As developing an Iconic Urban Foundry is the focus of this project, the IOT stands at the end of this wave and between the two bridges creating curiosity and gives more architectural value to the structure.

With ever growing population and excessive exploitation of natural resources, it has become necessary that steps are taken toward reducing our carbon footprint on the face of earth. The Urban Tree - a farmers market that promotes vertical farming, consumption of fresh organic produce, aeroponic farming, healthy living, community-oriented events and much more is a step toward this cause. Modern, Sustainable architecture forms the base of this project. Efficient and smart design choices help reduce the excessive energy required for domestic activities. Sustainable Architectural designs, if not completely stop, will help slow the process of degradation of the Earth. The Urban Tree sets a precedence for all future markets and similar architectures around the world.

REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS As all floors are identical in shape, size and are supported with similar beam grids, concrete slabs with minor reinforcement and metal decking are used. The nature of concrete slabs allows radiant floor heating. Another layer of insulation under the slab system keeps the heat from escaping and helps save energy used for heating/ cooling.

KINETIC SOLAR SKIN | THE FLOWERS The skin of the structure is the most important element of the building design. This kinetic skin opens and closes to allow individual aperture control in turn controlling the daylight and fresh air proportions. The top panel of each unit is a solar panel which generates energy not only for the building itself, but the excess is used to light up the urban park at night.

STEEL COLUMNS (PERIPHERAL) All the steel columns that wrap the building on its periphery are inclined to an angle so that it follows the slope of the building skin. While the angle of slope of the building with respect to perpendicular is +17.50 on one side the same is -17.50 on the other side.

STEEL COLUMNS (INTERNAL) A set of steel columns supported by pile foundation hold the structure in place. The height of each column is dependent on the slope of the building. While the ones near the core are as tall as the building, the ones near the edge may just reach one or two floors.

STEEL BEAM GRID | THE BRANCHES A steel beam runs along the periphery as well as all along all grid lines. This grid of beams is used on each level and thus ties to all inclined and straight columns.

THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM | THE TREE The structural system is inspired from that of a tree. Here, the heavily reinforced R.C.C Core walls act as tree trunks and provide exceptional structural stability. The pile foundation are the roots of the building and thus anchor deep into the ground. The sets of steel beams or the branches of the structure has helped the building over 130 feet. Just like the sunflower does, the building skin is oriented in a way, such that it absorbs maximum sunlight during the day. This not only provides ample daylight but also keeps the building warmer.

R.C.C. CORE | THE TRUNK As the structure inclines diagonally, the farthest diagonal point on the top became most vulnerable to shear stress. To counter this and provide sufficient shear strength, a 12inch thick R.C.C. core wall is introduced. This functions as the vertical movement core and acts like the trunk of the tree.

PILE FOUNDATION | THE ROOTS For added stability, all columns are anchored deep into the ground with the help of deep pile type foundations. These piles go deep about the same depth of the entire building.

With respect to context of Guelph and its communities, a focus is given to community driven urban architecture that is aesthetic and well planned. The possible entry points to the site form the datum to the design process and play an integral role in the site development process. After understanding the grids of the existing structures, a new grid is overlaid on it and a new 8+3 story vertical farming tower equipped with aeroponic systems is proposed in place of the existing farmers market. This market tower is oriented toward the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate and uses natural sun and wind to grow the produce. Although this tower – The Urban Tree, contains all the important elements and functions of the new Farmers market, community needs of the city are fulfilled on site by providing an Urban Park, Plaza, Housing Complex, Retail spaces, Performance spaces, a Produce Museum, theatres and much more. To create a connection to the City Hall a bridge over the train tracks is designed which helps to bring in more people towards the City Center Farmer ’s Market.

The project site being in Guelph, ON brought with itself one of the most serious consideration, the climatic response of the buildings. This thus became the guide for the schematic design as well as design development stages of the project. For the purpose of making the project as energy efficient as possible, multiple energy friendly techniques have been incorporated. 1. Solar Energy The building skin consists of multiple triangular solar panels on the sun side of the building. As the primary function of the building is for it to be used as a vertical farming – aeroponic tower, the building practically requires negligible energy. Thus, nearly all energy generated is stored and used to light up other buildings around the tower. 2. Geothermal Energy The main market hall is designed to have three floors subsurface. This helps maintain a temperature that is at least 5-70 lower than the outside. This colder damp atmosphere keeps produce fresh for longer and saves on refrigeration and cooling energy. 3. Passive Ventilation The Aeroponics tower is installed with passive cooling system that works with help of air pressure differences. Fresh air is sucked at ground level towards the sub surface floors. Because of geo thermal exchange the air is cooled to some extent. This air is then released in the market space. The used warmer air rises into the aeroponics tower where the plants release oxygen into this warm air which can then be circulated to the residential units.

Redefining the city’s skyline is a step one towards the development of entire city. The words ‘Ace’ meaning ‘first and the only one’ and ‘Obelisk’ meaning a tapering stone pillar, typically having a square or rectangular cross section, set up as a landmark’ suggest the importance and value of this structure.

FLOOR SIXTY-ONE The top nine floors are dedicated to a business class resort. The sixty-first floor also has a helipad.

FIRE STAIRCA

SE

FLOOR FORTY-FOUR The floor space is divided into two, 460 sq. m. - Class ‘A’ offices. The intended buyers for this space are corporate firms.

FLOOR TWENTY-THREE Various options for small scale offices with floor space ranging from 170 to 230 sq. m.

FLOOR SEVEN All floors up to 7 are occupied by the mall and separate vertical transition systems are provided within the mall for internal movement.

FLOOR ZERO The central transition core divides the building into 2 parts at the Floor Zero level. Two separate entrances lead to the Mall and Reception Lobby respectively.

Structural Strategies The form is derived from the human foot which is the foundation of our bodies and very effectively supports comparatively larger loads with such less cross section resting on the ground. More over in case of extreme wind loads or seismic movements or deflection due to moment the form helps the building to stay firmly on ground and avoids overturning similar to how our feet would react if we were pushed from behind. The ‘bone’ i.e. the R.C.C. shear wall core acts like a Vertebral column by itself and is efficient enough to support cantilever slabs up to 2/3rd (15-18 meters) of its own depth (28 meters)

Lateral Stability System The concrete core provides the primary lateral load resisting system. These outrigger trusses are accommodated in 2-3 story heights so as to reduce the cross section of the members and make this area usable. Indoor gardens with cafeteria and seating is provided in the lower parts whereas intermediate water reservoirs with transformer rooms are managed on upper levels. The increased loads due to the water reservoirs help in tackling the heavy wind loads rather than being of a concern to the vertical loading system. Cross Bracing All floors of the tower will be braced together with heavy duty structural steel sections. Cross bracing will help the structure to sway together in one direction or rather not. This system will convert all possible lateral loads and transfer them to the columns and in turn to the deep pile foundation.

Lift Strategy Transporting large numbers of people up and down every day throughout the year requires well managed heavyduty lifts. A total of 15 lifts are provided for this purpose. Two sets of three lifts each stop only for class-B and class-A offices respectively. Two lifts are designed to stop directly on the helipad/sky cafĂŠ level. Further a set of 4 lifts is dedicated to the 5-star hotel. Three lifts are assigned to the mall section of the building. Two lifts that go directly up to the helipad/sky cafĂŠ level act as fire safe lifts in case of emergencies and travel between all floors below. These will be of great help to the fire fighters to control the fire in a reasonably short time period.

Intermediate plant rooms and associated gardens To tackle the issue of pumping water through 280 meters and having the risk of possible catastrophes and accidents, the tower is provided with 3 intermediate plant rooms. These levels contain centralized toilet exhaust air fans, stair/lifts pressurization and pressure relief ducts. These levels also contain water break tanks, sprinkler tanks, low voltage electrical switch gear, transformers, emergency lighting backups, etc. The transformer room will be naturally ventilated and equipped with smoke extraction systems. Local cooling may be provided if mechanical ventilation is not sufficient to maintain acceptable conditions. These floors will also have a 2 story deep semi-indoor terraces which will act like break points between the vertical stretch.

SW 10mph

India has three sides of the border open to the sea, yet the cruise and ship business has not been explored thoroughly. This thesis project explores the possible proposal of an Overseas passenger cruise terminal in Mumbai, the financial capital of India.

SCOA 2017 Individual Project (Undergraduate Thesis Project) Guide : Professor Kavita Patil

Form Derivation The proposed Overseas Passenger Cruise Terminal will not only be a Gateway to India, but it will also project an image of the status and political as well as economic development of India. For a piece of architecture to be having so many responsibilities it is essential that the visual aspect that is its form and aesthetics be dominant and striking. It has been observed through the case studies that the planning of terminal buildings revolved mostly around the structural systems of the building. For a structure as massive as a Terminal Building, it is necessary that there is some sort of geometric grid so as to make the structural systems modular and space division proportionate.

Structural Grid The form of the structure divides the column layout in three zones. The first and third are identical wings and the second comprises of the central block, the core of the building. Wings: Both the wings of the structure have 15m+15m floor heights along with distance between columns ranging from 7m to 21m. To support the slabs of these spans, a dual support system is incorporated. The Core: The core is designed in such a way that it requires minimum or no additional structural support apart from the mandatory heavy reinforcement columns and beams. The 105m X 30m span is divided by a grid of columns at 10m c/c on either axis.

For decades artists and architects have been pushed to develop ideas that no one might have ever thought about: to think outside the box. The concept of [within the box] brings back the creative freedom the artist deserves and focuses on developing concepts that are inspired by the individuals idea of creativity. As all ‘out of box’ ideas are unique, all [within the box] are unique as well.

[06] IDENTITY Hybrid Media Art Works Savannah GA, USA

While art and architecture are the best platforms for an artist to express themselves, it is considerably challenging for an artist to actually sum up their lives on a 20 x 20 canvas. Through this self-portrait the artist conveys his experiences in art, architecture and photography. While these three disciplines together have contributed to the artists expression his humble background is what has helped him develop them. ‘Identity’ is like an image overlay of the key ingredients of the artist’s life.

[07] KNOWING THE UNKNOWN Tri-fold Brochure

Emerging Urban Issues Savannah GA, USA

Architecture and Urban Planning always are responsible for each other and create massive impact on people and their behavior. However, Urban Planning reaches out to a larger group of people and thus even a minor planning problem can turn into a major urban issue. This exercise aims at reaching out to people of Savannah and explaining them the benefits and their rights about the neighborhood associations. Through easy to understand pointers and clean graphic language, this tri-fold brochure targets this emerging urban issue.

[08] STEEL SMOKED WOOD Hybrid Media Art Works Savannah GA, USA

Pittsburgh today is a vibrant, midsized city that has the feel of a small town. Although, it used to be a smoky gray city known for the steel mills. Urban development has flourished, and architecture has played an integral part. ‘The Pittsburgh Eye’ is an example of one such iconic development which adds to the technologically advanced Pittsburgh. This collage is created by transferring the graphics on a raw piece of wood. It depicts the rustic and smoky identity of Pittsburgh while also focusing on the urban development.

[09] MARS LANDING Hybrid Media Art Works Savannah GA, USA

Mars today is a freeze-dried planet with almost no conditions that supports life. Given the curiosity of man and the want to explore the universe, it is for sure that man will one day step foot on Mars – just like he did on the Moon. The idea of landing on Mars and eventually colonizing it is as extravagant as it sounds. ‘Mars Landing’ is the artist’s expression of the vibrant Martian landscapes. As those would be completely untouched and never been at, each footstep that we take on the red planet would make that part of the land imaginatively golden.
