Fun-raising at JAZZ.FM91

Yes, you read that correctly. Even with the necessary business of fundraising, our twice yearly campaigns are well, fun and frantic! I had my first shift last Saturday morning with Brad Barker and Ross Porter (and about 8 other volunteers), and the 4 hour shift produced over $20,000. Thank you very much!

With a fleet of volunteers ready to take your calls, the atmosphere here at the station is busy, but also provides a great sense of camaraderie. We love hearing from our listeners who tell us how long they have listened to the station, how they can't get through the day without us, kudos to favourite on air people and programs, the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band, the Jazz Safaris, concerts, live to air attendances, children dancing to the music at home....wow! In between calls, our amazing volunteers get to visit and catch up with people they may not have seen for 6 months. Sometimes pictures of grandchildren are proudly shared, and everyone is well nourished thanks to our caterering contributors. Did I mention the fabulous prizes? CD box sets, DVDs, iPods, MacBooks...those cause a great flurry of activity. We also have listeners who just prefer to quietly contribute, need no swag and feel warm and fuzzy inside, which is nice too. And where does all this funding go you might ask? I managed to get a few minutes of time from our very, very busy Fundraising and Outreach Director, Alison Liddell so that you can meet her and understand where your contributions go. How long have you been at JAZZ.FM91 now? I started at JAZZ.FM in October 2008 – 4 weeks before the fall campaign last year. I’ve worked in fundraising for about 20 years. Have always worked in the charitable sector – past organizations include The University of Toronto, The Easter Seal Society and CNIB. I got into fundraising accidentally – my education is in science. I have a degree in human biology but never worked in that field. I have extensive experience in event planning and fundraising – and have taken lots of courses in those areas.

An Evening for Haiti

Jane Bunnett, along with JAZZ.FM91 and special guests including Molly Johnson, Amanda Martinez and Hilario Duran, are coming together to support Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. “Art et Spectacle”, the International Festival of Jazz in Port au Prince was scheduled to happen in late January, and for the past few months Jane Bunnett and Spirits of Havana have been preparing to be there to represent Canada. They, along with many other jazz greats from around the world, were to take part in week long series of concerts and workshops. The earthquake’s devastation has put an end to this as it has to just about all of normal life in Haiti. JAZZ.FM91 is proud to support Jane Bunnett and some very special musical friends in this fundraising concert, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. A limited numer of tickets are still available

Jazzology Revisited with Cam Britton

I know we are not supposed to play favourites with our guests, but the delightful saxophonist Cam Britton was one of our most prepared and personable (okay - and handsome) profiles ever in our short "Jazzology" history. After graduating from Humber College's Jazz Studies program in 2007, Cam married his high school sweetheart, Krisy and released a debut CD (recorded at Humber) in short order. Whew! I highly recommend it - check it out on iTunes. The couple's move to Montreal or "Canada's city of love" (as Cam phrased it with a smile) saw Cam playing in a number of the city's jazz venues and negotiating the "two solititudes". Opportunity came calling when Krisy applied for and won a year long internship at the UN in New York. Who can resist the siren call of The Big Apple - especially if you're a jazz musician? Locating to Brooklyn, Cam took lessons from fellow expat and noted saxophonist Seamus Blake, while enjoying his time performing in NY's many jazz clubs. He decided to enjoy himself and not be phased by the sheer number of musicians - and competition. Through a friend of a friend he acquired another few lines for his resume. As a sort of a trial by fire he became music editor for the late night talk show "The Edge with Jake" - seen

in over 50 markets. Over time he also found himself composing music for the show....and of course, found a new passion. Cam also found time to record with indie artist Vaimoana Heyman's CD and do some session work for dance music. Since returning to Toronto in September, he has taken in some shows at Massey Hall and Koerner Hall as an usher (where I reconnected at Paquito D'Rivera's show) and working with MJ Cyr, another indie vocalist in the Feist vein, whose second CD is about to be released. He also has a publishing company called Little Burgundy Music Company. Over coffee in a neighbourhood cafe on a chilly Friday, Cam's enthusiasm and effervescence are as strong as ever and he says he is "trying to learn as much as I can about everything I can" and of course be open to new opportunities. I have a feeling you will be hearing much more from this talented young musician. His website is www.cameronbritton.com if you would like to get in touch.

Clark Terry to receive Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award

In a special invitation-only ceremony to be held during GRAMMY Week on January 30th, one of jazz's most beloved citizens, Clark Terry will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy®. "This year's honorees are a prestigious group of diverse and prominent creators who have contributed some of the most distinguished and influential recordings," said Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow. "Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come. It is an honor and privilege to recognize such talented individuals who have had and will continue to have such an influence in both our culture and the music industry." The Lifetime Achievement Award honors lifelong artistic contributions to the recording medium. This award is determined by vote of The Recording Academy's National Board of Trustees. The other honorees this year are: Leonard Cohen, Bobby Darin, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Michael Jackson, Loretta Lynn, and André Previn. Considered to be one of the early pioneers to use a flugelhorn in jazz, Clark Terry's career in jazz spans more than sixty years. He is a worldclass trumpeter, flugelhornist, educator, and NEA Jazz Master. He performed for seven U.S. Presidents, and was a Jazz Ambassador for

State Department tours in the Middle East and Africa. He received two Grammy certificates, three Grammy nominations, thirteen honorary doctorates, keys to cities, lifetime achievements and halls of fame awards. He was knighted in Germany and is the recipient of the French Order of Arts and Letters. Clark's star on the Walk of Fame, and his Black World History Museum's life-sized wax figure can both be

visited in his hometown, St. Louis, Missouri. Clark composed more than two hundred jazz songs, and his books include Let's Talk Trumpet: From Legit to Jazz, Interpretation of the Jazz Language and Clark Terry's System of Circular Breathing for Woodwind and Brass Instruments. He recorded with The London Symphony Orchestra, The Dutch Metropole Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra and The Chicago Jazz Orchestra, at least thirty high

school and college ensembles, his own duos, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, octets, and two big bands -- Clark Terry's Big Bad Band and Clark Terry's Young Titans of Jazz. His career as both leader and sideman with more than three hundred recordings demonstrates that he is one of the luminaries in jazz. Clark's discography reads like a "Who's Who In Jazz," with personnel that includes great jazz artists such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Ben Webster, Charlie Barnet, Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Billy Strayhorn, Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, Bob Brookmeyer, Jon Faddis, and Dianne Reeves. In 1960, Clark helped break the color barrier at NBC, "The Urban League had inquired of NBC why they had so few black employees, only to be told that there were no black people qualified to play music on television. The League sent out questionnaires seeking musicians who could "play studio music, read music, play in a section, play first trumpet, solo, etc. My name happened to come up on all the questionnaires," related Terry. Soon he became a fixture in the "Tonight Show" band, with which he was often featured in the "stump the band" segment, sometimes performing what had become somewhat of a trademark, his "Mumbles" act.
