EXPLANATION
This year’s festival headquarters, and also the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Meeting Point and the point of departure for various events, is in the ‘stilwerk’ Vienna, Praterstraße 1. This flag marks all of the events that are part of our focus on Poland.
2. Events in Leopoldstadt, this year’s focal district, are marked with a green number two. Here there is either a presentation or an opening, usually something to drink, and always fabulous design. Here you can have your VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Pilgrim’s Pass stamped – and win. You can get your pass at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Meeting Point or at any of the 40 places where the pass can be stamped. These are the event locations that provide a joker stamp. By the way, it counts double!
19 See the city map and addresses at the back of the Guide. Kantine – the daily after-hours spot at the Café Drechsler, with soulful music provided by radio 98.3 Superfly. DJ line-up from 19:00–23:00! Vienna Citybike stations
Unless otherwise indicated, all exhibitions and presentations can be seen from 30 September to 9 October. The majority of events offer free admission; however, for interventions and guided tours in the museums, the normal entrance fees apply (subject to change).

More business enterprises than ever have decided to participate in the creative organisation of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK , from young designers to established studios, from the leading furnishing houses to cultural institutions. It whisks you off into studios, introduces you to material innovations or exciting designers from abroad. Poland, hitherto unexplored territory as a land of design, is placed in a special spotlight this year as our guest country.
Yours Tulga Beyerle and Lilli Hollein for the Neigungsgruppe Design and the entire team of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK
At this point we would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors and supporters. Their commitment has once again enabled us to put on a festival that costs practically nothing to visit throughout. So take up our invitation. Come and celebrate with us on our first, small anniversary! 3

Idea generator and booster: to pull design from off its pedestal and into our lives: once again, this is the challenge responded to so successfully by the initiators of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK . They bring design into the public space, directly into people’s everyday lives, and whet the appetite for more, whether in the private sphere or in industry. The “Passionswege” – direct interventions in business locations lead the way here in creating a close connection between design and business enterprises. The question as to what added value they generate and whether they succeed in attracting business permanently to design is the subject of a publication we are bringing out in the near future. And one vital point in advance: design is a powerful factor, most especially in the industrial world of today. With this in mind I wish the 2011 VIENNA DESIGN WEEK the greatest of success!

Vienna had made a name for itself as a city with great creative potential long before the word “design” was used as a synonym for zeitgeist, creativity, innovation and revolutionary flair. Thanks to initiatives such as the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK , Vienna plays an essential role, not only with its rich cultural heritage but also in the here and now of design, regularly galvanising the international scene. In its impressive range it makes design into a living experience and brings the growing branch of creative industries into the limelight. Such a dynamic and refulgent platform as the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is a stroke of luck for the Vienna Tourist Board, for it is after all a decisive factor in shaping the international image of Vienna as a cosmopolitan capital with a special flair and feeling for design.
“The Only Constant in Life is Change” – and design is the guarantee that we are equipped to cope with future changes. Designers are called to confront the future in their product design, and to create products and services with the highest aesthetic standards and a sense of social and ecological responsibility. The chance to transform and recreate the city in large and small makes design into a key factor of urban vision. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is taking place this year for the fifth time already. This not only shows that there are outstanding design formations in Vienna, but also that a whole city is ready to address the topic of design. The various levels upon which design can be experienced and comprehended have ensured that the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is now a highlight on the Viennese cultural calendar.

Debut
Debut is the new-generation platform of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and is intended for advanced students and young professionals from the field of product and industrial design. The format was set up in 2009 and is a cooperation project with the James Dyson Award and the James Dyson Foundation. Every year an independent Debut jury selects ten projects from the Austrian submittances for the international James Dyson Award; these are presented as part of the festival programme.
VIENNA DESIGN WEEK can

The works by the ten “debutants” will be shown from 30 September until 9 October as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK in an exhibition with the title IMPORT/EXPORT in this year’s focal district Vienna Leopoldstadt (second district). Education
When a festival grows over the years, its overall transparency becomes obscured in almost the same proportion. Naturally, we have tried in our festival guide to clear the design jungle on paper. But we also want to take you personally by the hand and offer you three guided tours through the festival programme, planned according to different viewpoints. In cooperation with the city guide Gabriela Steiner-Scharfetter, we have worked out nine tours on foot and by bus with her as your guide, presenting a fascinating cross-section of the programme both for newcomers as well as for the initiated. Starting at the festival headquarters, the Meeting Point in the stilwerk/Praterstraße, visitors take a look over the designers’ shoulders, and then the course track continues to old established businesses, elegant shops and up-to-the-minute design locations – an astonishing encounter with design to marvel at and linger in your mind. For individual travellers on the “Designland” map, this guide is the Lonely Planet vademecum.
22
And of course we haven’t forgotten the younger generation. It seems very important to us that we sharpen the critical eye of children and school students as to how and to what extent our environment is influenced by “design”. By motivation through play we can awaken their own active, creative instincts. Very few people are better situated to do this than the design°mobil experts, who have set up two children’s workshops for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Education format. The Education programme is supported by impulse | aws within the framework of evolve of the BMWFJ.

Exhibition
The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has invited two international exhibitions to Vienna this autumn, both under the aegis of this year’s guest country Poland.
As part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK the Polish designer and architect Oskar Zieta presents “Reflections” as his first solo exhibition in Vienna – although not his first appearance at the festival, for The peripatetic exhibition he took part in 2008. In this “Just a Thing” is curated by installation, presented in the Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, premises of Sotheby's, he tries for the first time to make one of the leading design experts in Poland (Lodz Inter- metal sheet appear transparent. Laboratory
Throughout the entire festival the Laboratory is a pulsating centre for interdisciplinary and process-oriented works situated between graphic design and product design. Invited designers work exclusively in situ during their guest visits of varied length; they react with one another, possibly collaborate, and also present the results in this public area for experiment – so that by the end of the festival the exhibition space becomes more and more close packed. Visitors are heartily invited to take a look over the designers’ shoulders, to ask questions, and to follow the design process live. In addition, all guests in the laboratory present themselves and their work individually in a lecture as part of the programme of “Laboratory Talks”.
The Theme: Copyright, Copyleft
The laboratory is moreover the festival information centre, the Meeting Point. Both are located this year in the stilwerk Wien, a new design location in the Jean Nouvel Tower, opened at the end of last autumn.
Curators: Neigungsgruppe Design and Erwin K. Bauer
26
The work theme of this year’s Laboratory is more topical than ever. It concerns the multifaceted associations of the “copy” – as a counterpart and derivative of the original, as an act of more or less deliberate copying, which practically every day questions the autonomy of nearly every creative worker’s achievements. But it also broaches the issue of intellectual property and how we are to respond to a situation in which the reproduction media are omnipresent (key phrase “creative commons”). Naturally the Laboratory also asks: when and how can the copy become a form of artistic expression and its tools a means of innovation?

Passionswege In order to illustrate in October the extraordinary extent to which design has become embedded in the city, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is starting already in spring by launching the cooperation of nine designers and designer teams from the home and international scene with local Viennese producers and businesses – the Passionswege. They involve the use of workshops, experimentation in situ, and interventions in local businesses and shops. Meanwhile, the partnerships are completely free of the pressure to generate commercially viable products (although we don’t exclude this as an option). What matters far more is the exchange, the passing on of expertise, the preservation and further development of knowledge and virtuosity in craftsmanship and manufacture. This gives designers the unique opportunity of working together with exquisite, mostly highly specialised and traditional handicraft operations, for the firms a welcome departure from business as usual and a new impetus.
28
The results of the projects are each presented in an installation in the business locations. Festival visitors can then explore them enthusiastically as part of the Passionswege – because, as the name implies, this Viennese design path abounds in impassioned zeal – for design, for handicraft, for unexpected discoveries. The installations are all on show from 30 September to 9 October 2011 during the relevant opening hours. Moreover, three evenings include a cocktail in the business locations in the presence of the designers. The Passionswege are supported by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce

Talks
This year, too, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is putting on a series of lectures by the leading designers taking part. For our talks this year, organised in cooperation with departure – Die Kreativagentur der Stadt Wien, we are fortunited to have won Ravi Naidoo (za) and Doshi Levien (uk) with talks by Dieter Rams (de) and Cameron Sinclaire (uk) to be confirmed. The topic this year is “Change”, which the guests will highlight from their own point of view and work experience. “Change” once more addresses the issue of the central significance of design as catalyst
30
and pathfinder of social change. Globalisation is causing radical changes in our society and confronting designers with questions of social and ecological responsibility and design’s role as a holistic instrument and strategy for improving our living environment. So at this year’s VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Talks you can hear important designers talking about the chances that design has to really change things. The Talks are supported by departure – Die Kreativagentur der Stadt Wien

Peppy, dynamic, internationally oriented and sufficiently radical to be open to change – this is how we might describe the contemporary Polish design scene. It is at home in several centres all at once: Warsaw, Cracow and Lodz, each with its own educational facilities. Lodz also has a design festival and, like many former industrial cities, is cultivating a strong profile of creativity and culture. While the graphic arts in Poland enjoyed a high-profile also during the Communist era, it is only recently that product design has begun to rethink its image. Awareness is appreciably increasing in business enterprises to exploit design to get the competitive edge over their rivals, and many designers living abroad are happy to set up afterwards in their home country. One of these is the successful designer-architect Oskar Zieta, represented at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK with a solo show.
34
While the Polish EU council presidency engages designers such as festival guest Tomek Rygalik, so that their presence is now being felt on the international scene, groundbreaking exhibitions of Polish design are making waves across the globe. This year, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is showing the group exhibition “Just a Thing”, curated by Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, who is presenting ten fascinating Polish designers and designer teams, and the solo exhibition “Reflections” by Oskar Zieta. The 2011 VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is presenting its guest country of Poland with a total of nine events – a real discovery, so come and enjoy! The festival focus on Polish design is supported by the Polish Institute Vienna.

Focus 2nd district Fifteen years ago hardly anyone looking for an apartment or business premises in Vienna would have thought of the second district, Leopoldstadt. And this, although only the Danube Canal separates it from the inner city. This has radically changed. The second district has become “hip”, particularly on Karmelitermarkt and the busy thoroughfares of Taborstraße and Praterstraße; rents are going up, gastronomy and office densification increasing. Despite this,
36
the district has remained free of inner-city gloss; it has charm and still harbours sufficient places off the beaten track for people to feel good in. Scattered about among a wide variety of local infrastructural facilities – there are three functioning markets! – we can find cultural initiatives, galleries, cosy cafés, small shops and craft workshops. For the second time the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has chosen this geographical focus to spotlight interesting neighbourhoods across the canal, this year particularly the Volkertmarkt and Taborstraße. The objective is to discover or rediscover this lively and indeed loveable piece of Vienna via design.

Beza Projekt (pl) AT ATELIER TELLIEZ He is “not a decorator”, but a “tapessier”, as Philippe Telliez repeatedly insists. The native Frenchman, who runs an atelier near Karmelitermarkt, is one of the last of this profession in Austria. For he deals in techniques that belong to a long past culture of home living. Telliez makes wall hangings, tapestries, heavy drapery, restores old upholstery and in elaborate craftsmanship recreates new designs after old models. Sometimes in the style of Louis XV, sometimes XVI, sometimes after Josef Hoffmann. Beza Projekt is the name chosen for themselves by the Warsaw designers Anna Łoskiewicz and Zofia Strumiłło-Sukiennik. With their adventurous, fresh and frequently humorous approach they are a perfect match for the world of exquisite, pre-industrial interior design. Their “swinging” contrast programme in the Atelier Telliez: a swing, modern in design, fashioned by master hand and, most important: to be tried out in situ! The winning objects and concepts will be on view in the show ‘Walk of Fame’ in the designforum Wien. The prize-winning projects include both consumer and investment goods and architectural design concepts. The recurrent theme: design as vehicle for the latest developments in terms of materials technology and thus as connecting link between progress and aesthetics. ‘The winning projects once again prove that design which is both application oriented and distinctive can provide the basis for international success stories ... DER SCHEINWERFER
DER SCHEINWERFER II: THERE-BETWEEN In 2011 the SCHEINWERFER project with ‘There-Between’ has been dealing with the new housing scheme that has been planned by the SEG for the location Hackenbergweg, in Vienna’s nineteenth district (architect, Peter Lorenz). This includes examining the transformation process of this allotment garden settlement into luxury flats, as well as neighbourhood issues, and how a project with light as an independent element can influence the planning. Lighting concepts by Francisco Perez, ‘lighting in – lighting out’, and Michael Farkas’s ‘Lichtlenkung’ have been chosen for the realisation, which will be presented with the other projects. Kicking off the SCHEINWERFER project in 2010 was ‘Fish on the Move’ by Erim Gökalpay, a semi-permanent installation at the boarding house for foreign students at the Spittelauer Lände 10 (architect, Zaha Hadid), on the Donaukanal. Fedrigoni Austria PAPER OF THE FINEST FROM ITALY
Florian Rainer & Michael Fetz (at) RE-HANG/RETHINK
Fedrigoni is Italy’s largest producer of fine-quality paper, with its headquarters in Verona and now with its own showroom in Vienna. Only a few metres away from the MuseumsQuartier, paperlovers have the chance to gain an overview of the entire array of fine paper inside. There are currently more than 3,500 different papers to choose from, ranging from natural and special-quality paper to paper for digital prints, technical paper, contact paper, and even beautiful cardboard packaging. In addition to showroom visits, we will be offering a glimpse into the world of paper production on 5 October as part of an evening event. Whether with unusual looks or feels, scarcely a wish goes unfulfilled at Fedrigoni’s. With all the variety, still retaining that unique, unmistakeable quality – that’s what Fedrigoni fine paper stands for.
The homelessness of young people is an “invisible” problem. In cooperation with Caritas Wien a concept is being worked out to make the homelessness of young people visible. A photographic installation in the public space is tied in with a product made by homeless people. Life-size photos of young street-sleepers inform passers-by about the problem. At the same time suggestions are put forward for a solution. Support and look good at the same time! Gabriela SteinerScharfetter (at) DESIGN GOES LEOPOLDSTADT
Gabriela SteinerScharfetter (at) DESIGN EVERYWHERE
The focal point of this year’s design festival is Vienna’s second district, one of the city’s up-andcoming areas. On a walking tour through the district, especially around the Volkertmarkt, we will bring light into the undergrowth of the design jungle there – for it is growing abundantly: product, furniture, industrial, graphic, industrial, and experimental design; social, urban, and eco design – the concept presents itself in a multitude of varieties! We will be looking behind the scenes in small craft enterprises just as much as in temples of creativity, and explore a pop-up restaurant, a public farming project, and other quite unique design events.
Out and around by bus in Vienna, we will be guiding you through the diversity of the design festival. This will be a navigation and escort through the city, beginning at the ‘stilwerk’ building in Taborstrasse and continuing to places full of design, traditional companies, and significant design collections. Join us in uncovering the many-layered world of design in this city, between mass production and hole-in-the-wall companies or between design in a museum, in the creative forge, and in everyday life.

Gabriela SteinerScharfetter (at) DESIGN MEETS TRADITION
Gaulhofer MORE THAN LESS Martin Breuer Bono (at)
How does it happen that lamps suddenly wear hats, and what makes the Bad Aussee dirndl (a woman’s folk costume) Polish? With this guided tour of the festival for beginners, starting at the ‘stilwerk’ building in Praterstrasse, we will wander by the old established firms in the city centre. We will be looking over the shoulders of craftsmen and attempting to understand the creative ideas of designers by means of dialogue. While strolling through the workshops in nooks and crannies and the elegant shops, we will also get to know about design from this year’s guest country Poland. The walk will bring an understanding that design is everywhere: practical or poetic, socially oriented or luxurious, regional or international.
In window construction there is an observable tendency to optically minimise the systems. We want to take another path with this project: to do more than the minimum – ‘More Than Less’. A window should make itself known in a space, be present as an object: intelligent in its technical concept, powerful in its functions, high-quality in its material, detail, and execution – an object that carries weight and is imbued with meaning. Its appearance should also sharply differentiate between indoors and outdoors: freely formed, graceful, and analogue here; inaccessible, crystalline, and severe there. Thus the creation reformulates in a substantial way the essential properties of a superior window: specific permeability.

Hakobo Studio, Jakub and Paulina Stêpieñ (pl) COPYRIGHT, COPYLEFT Jakub Stępień, aka Hakobo, is considered one of the highestprofile poster designers in the world. He breaks through the borders of art, design, and commercial art and collaborates with many of Poland’s cultural institutions. His characteristic style is heavily influenced by traditional graphic art and street culture, but contains elements of both simple arrangements and camouflage, graphic noiz, or the excessive. Pola Stępień studied graphic art and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ldoz and works in the areas of architecture, interior design, and design. The founder of the fashion label MODAPOLKA and the design studio wunderteam.pl, she draws her inspiration primarily from exploring the border areas of the disciplines.
Hauer Rumo (de/ch) LIVE WITH THEM Wild animals are colonising the city. Because of growing conurbations and shrinking woodland their natural habitat is becoming more and more confined. Now they are re-adapting and taking back what the city has taken from them. Fox, racoon and wild boar have arrived in the everyday life of the city and can be encountered with increasing frequency between dustbin and alleyway. Tired of dirt and chaos, townspeople are trying to keep the wild animal at bay. But how can we integrate animals into our lives again and live with them in a balanced relationship? Hauer Rumo are supporting the take-over by the wild creatures of the woods and inviting them to settle in a city like Vienna. The presentation shows how the two designers picture this new partnership. Carte Blanche presentation

Hermann Trebsche (at) AT BALLONS & BALLONS
Hinterland (at) WANDERLAND – A POP-UP HINTERLAND
Before Mr Padilla founded the company Ballons & Ballons at the lower end of Taborstrasse, he was a designer – to be exact, a designer of lamps for night stands, which he and his wife produced and sold from their flat. His main business today is trading in merchandise made of latex, plastic, or the environmentally friendly natural rubber and filled with air, helium, or water. Field of application: from births to burials. Facts and details about the persons in question, as well as the dynamic nature of a hollow elastic body, harbour design stories – some of them rather poetic – that can be told in Vienna. Did you know, for instance, that Mr Padilla also owns a go cart track at the Prater amusement park that he doesn’t talk about much? Hermann Trebsche is going to get to the bottom of these stories and tell them from a designer’s point of view.

Lying under the tree, one can get lost in thoughts of another world – with the aid of sound and image. A dream world for just a short time! Intier Automotive Eybl FLAXX CHAIRPRESENTATION Martin Mostböck (at) The ‘FLAXX Chair’ has been conceived as a hybrid, with the comfort of a cantilever chair and the functionality of one with four legs. The new type of construction employed for the supporting frame and the combination of all the merits of both concepts is an up-to-date interpretation, both in terms of function and form. The seat shell is made of natural fibre mats, with several layers of the material pressed and thus brought into a stable, three-dimensional form. The seat shell and base frame are 100 percent recyclable. The technology for the fabrication of the seat comes from the automobile industry and is already being successfully employed for interior components. With the ‘FLAXX Chair’ this technology is being used in a modified form for the first time for furniture, combining the advantages of modern technology with the concept of sustainable materials. Installations by Italian artists living in Vienna – Michael Obrist and Peter Zoderer (feld72); Marco Dessí, Luca Paschini, Karl Emilio Pircher (Walking-Chair); and Giulio Polita and Esther Stocker. The artists reflect new dimensions of their cultural identity in an interplay between their Italian origins and working experience in Austria. In the space-related works, the boundaries between art and the disciplines of architecture and design are blurred. These aspects will be topics covered by Tulga Beyerle talking with the artists and the curator, Claudia Maria Walther. The exhibition is on view until 30 November 2011. This new format was developed in 2010 by the children’s furniture designers Thomas Maitz (perludi, Graz) and Paola Noé (the gallery unduetrestella – Design for Kids, Milan) and has already been successfully exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair 2011 and at the Graz Design Month 2011. The project unites contemporary art, a product presentation, events, and workshops as a way of creating a network revolving around the subject of children. Under the slogan ‘How r u?’ adults put themselves on a level with youngsters and question the positioning of and children’s access to furniture and everyday objects. Ecology, value consciousness, and responsibility for the coming generations are concepts that play an instrumental role here. Programme Partner presentation

J. & L. Lobmeyr 80 YEARS “LOOS-SERVICE” Stefan Sagmeister (at/us) The cylindrical glass tumblers from Vienna have conquered the world. It would most certainly have pleased Adolf Loos to see an industrially manufactured variant of his design from the 1930s in any café you might happen to walk into. The original, which was considered to be provocatively simple in those days, has been produced ever since by Lobmeyr. Tiny details, more felt than seen, make these glasses objects one simply loves. In a letter to Lobmeyr, Loos suggested engraving motifs on the base: ‘butterfly, fly, a nude human figure, little animals, etc’ – an unusual proposal to be made by a purist. The New York-based graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister has now been commissioned to deliver his interpretation. The result: ‘SEVEN DEADLY SINS – SEVEN HEAVENLY VIRTUES’.

LucidiPevere (it) AT WOKA LAMPS VIENNA WOKA produces luminaires and lamp models from the period of art nouveau and the Wiener Werkstätte, also design of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In all these lines it prides itself on its unique craftsmanship. At WOKA they know all about the cultural history of the lamp. And of course the refinement of brass, which was always highly valued as a metal alloy in making lamps, alone for its similarity to gold. The two Italian designers LucidiPevere are also fans of brass. Therefore they have decided not to make a brass object for their project at WOKA, but to stage in a display of their own design a kind of study in honour of the goldenyellow material and its potential. They explore material and colour combinations, celebrate the diversity of surface techniques, and not least honour the skills of the craftspeople at WOKA.

Seeing to the real coffee house business will be the Vienna professional group of coffee houses and the Club of Viennese Coffee House Owners. Waiter, please ...! With the MAK DESIGN NITE, a further accompanying exhibition will open, in the MAK DESIGN SPACE, that will show the development process of Phase I and evaluate the test period of Phase II (until 13 October). The research project will then be documented in a publication. Programme Partner exhibition MAK, 1., Stubenring 5 Tues 4.10., 20:00

‘Coffee houses are like pockets in the public sphere where space and time are consumed, but only coffee appears on the bill.’ This is how Gregor Eichinger explains the simple principle of a coffee house. As a transitional spot between private and public, leisure and work, between communication, contemplation, and the offer of analogue and digital meetings, in any case the coffee house offers still more potential for urban culture than mere consumption or nostalgia. Under Eichinger’s direction and with high-profile international involvement, novel ideas have been worked out that now will be tried out in a test arrangement in the MAK-Säulenhalle (until 16 October). An accompanying exhibition in the MAK DESIGN SPACE will show the experiment’s development process. The applied research project is taking place within the framework of design> neue strategien, a cooperation between MAK und departure, the creative agency of the City of Vienna. MAK THE SECOND SKIN – OBJECTS FOR PACKING AND PRESERVING MAK Special Guided Tour
The comparison between the ornamental beautification of what are actually modern, anonymous architectural structures with the sugar icing on a torte cites a metaphor that was already discovered in the representational buildings of the Stalin era, the so-called ‘gingerbread style’. Hanakam & Schuller’s ‘Tartes’ are the product of the artist pair’s ongoing occupation with dessert surfaces and toppings, which they explore and apply as a sculptural medium. They translate the forms and colour schemes of these toppings into video animations, computer applications, objects, and small furniture articles. The ‘Tarte’ series is a mixture of computer graphics, objects, and cut-out sheets. Twelve cut-out sheets from different theme groups produce a whole tarte. In cooperation with the MAK Design Shop they will be issued as a calendar edition for the year 2012.

Megumi Ito, Peter Weisz, mikimartinek (at) Sebastian Menschhorn MERINO WOOL IN A (jp/at) 5 SENSES – ROSES, DESIGN:CONTEXT TULIPS, CARNATIONS! mikimartinek has placed a knit Sharpening the five senses – smell, taste, touch, hearing, and sight – while you enjoy a nice glass of wine. First, the sense of sight will be called into action: What is the label like? Then comes the sense of touch: How does the bottle feel in the hand? Finally, the cork will be noisily removed, and the sound of the wine being poured will be followed by the awakened senses of smell and taste: the awareness of the bouquet, the first sip... The installation will be located at a winery, where all of these perceptions are moreor-less consciously celebrated on a daily basis. The overdrawn aids to the senses, such as flowers for the bouquet or the typical sounds of a bottle of wine being opened as a sound stage will allow the sensory perceptions to be filtered individually or synesthetically registered together. The intoxication of the senses in this installation can be experienced completely without a hangover!
stool in a design:context and created a piece of upholstered furniture that combines qualities of previous seating objects in a surprising new way. Central to the process are technology and materials. The design runs consciously counter to the concepts of ‘transient’, ‘fast’, and ‘cheap’. Why textiles? ‘Textiles embrace us,’ says the trend analyst Li Edelkoort. Nevertheless, the knowledge and skills involved with textiles are dying out. Together with the knitting expert Veronika Persché, mikimartinek has developed premium-quality, individually knitted works from merino wool, so that the stools have a feeling of sumptuousness. In a display visitors can experience spirit, personality, versatility, and something new and different. On 1 October and from 3 to 8 October mikimartinek will personally be there as of 17:00. Nespresso NESPRESSO DESIGN CONTEST SUSTAIN. ABILITY.DESIGN
Neue Wiener Werkstätte M3-CHAIR Thomas Feichtner (at)
Quality, innovation, and design play a central role for Nespresso. State-of-the-art design coffee machines and accessories emphasize the exclusivity and uniqueness of the 16 Nespresso ‘Grand Cru’ coffees. After a successful debut last year, Nespresso Austria and the Neigungsgruppe Design have organised a contest for the second time within the framework of the VIENNA DESIGN WEE K, which underscores design competence for the long term. Service design is the main theme of this year’s contest. March Gut, Bernhard Rothbucher, Rouven Haas, White Elephant, and Julia Landsiedl have all been invited to deal with the entire recycling service and process for the Nespresso coffee capsules. The five projects will be displayed in the Nespresso Boutique at Mahlerstraße as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK . Of these, three will receive awards from a prestigious panel of judges.
NEUE WIENER WERKSTÄTTE will be showing the ‘M3 Chair’ by the Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner. This one-of-a-kind piece represents a contrast to the serially produced ‘FX10 Lounge Chair’, an earlier design by Feichtner, which has already become an Austrian design classic. Freed of the requirements of a series product, this design not only experiments with static and function, but also relies on the craftsmanship of the traditional company

Zieta’s objects, their inflated metal furniture, will be shown here encased in boxes lined with patterns. Through small peepholes, the viewers will see a section of a picture reflected on the polished surface of the metal composed of a distorted image of both the space and the pattern. This transgression of the boundaries – the melding of pattern, surface, and reflection – will also leave the viewer with an impression of warmth or coolness depending on the type of metal – whether stainless steel or brass, for example. Patrycja Domanska (at) AT TOSTMANN TRACHTEN
Petr Novague (cz) EMOTION CONSTRUCTION
Everyday dirndls, festive dirndls, blueprint linen and wool brocade – Tostmann is the firm of tailors of traditional Austrian dress founded in 1949 as a business run by two people near Attersee; it has become genuinely renowned in this traditional, quality fashion sector, also internationally. Highquality woven and printed fabrics, renewal within tradition, not forgetting exclusive production in its own tailoring workshops – these are the qualities that have made the name of the firm stand out. Though impressed by the “slow dress” mentality in the custom tailoring workshop, the Viennabased designer Patrycja Domanska nevertheless opted to bring a serial aspect into the Tostmann atelier. She touched up and refashioned a sewing machine into a printing tool to generate what is probably an entirely new generation of traditional fabrics. Come and print your own dirndl!
The presentation by Czech designer Petr Novague represents not only a personal story but also a new form of product and its development. Novague‘s creative approach is that of individual design, which is determined by the character of the client and the situation on the market at the same time. The installation shows the individual stages and fragments of the process, introducing the visitors to a world of original forms, elegance and a variety of design solutions. Philippe Malouin (ca) AT J. & L. LOBMEYR
PostlerFerguson (uk) CAFÉ SONJA
The Viennese glass company of J. & L. Lobmeyr, erstwhile purveyors to the court, has devoted itself for 200 years to the refinement and finishing of the demanding material of glass. The company is equally as famous for incomparable quality in mousseline glass, cut glass, engraving and chandelier production as it is for the close collaboration with some of the most outstanding designers of the twentieth century. The Canadian designer Philippe Malouin is casting a new light onto the Lobmeyr production method, which is characterised by time intensity and low-quantity series. Quartz powder slowly sifts out of a revolving and simultaneously rotating sack, visualising the time factor. Spirographic-type patterns self-generate, gain in complexity, slowly become dunes perhaps.
As a contemporary interpretation, Café Sonja is a special arm of the traditional Café Drechsler in the Vienna second district. With exquisite coffee and food nestled amongst rough walls, PostlerFerguson and Café Drechsler have put together simple and delicious dishes for you. Classical Viennese cuisine rethought in new combinations, textures and forms and served in a calm, warm atmosphere. Thoughtful but not precious, raw but refined, Sonja is a designer's local joint.

Pratersauna THE SAUNA CHAIR PS ArtSpace × Clemens Wolf A vehicle for groceries turns into a piece of furniture! The childhood memories of the cathedral of consumption and its altars, the supermarket shelves, are about the (un)attainability of the objects of desire. The child sits in the shopping trolley and reaches out for the goods on offer. The ‘Sauna Chair’ places its user in a similar situation. In the context of the Prater Sauna as a temple of hedonistic encounters, the seating furniture establishes a link between those sitting and those dancing – the latter as symbolic objects of desire. In the anonymitycreating situation inherent to the place, ‘the child’s’ range of action is once again externally controlled at arm’s length. Welcome to the shopping trolley! Die Presse IDEA CONTEST MARKE ÖSTERREICH Twenty distinguished visual designers, who are either Austrian or living in Austria, have been invited by Die Presse and the Austrian Postal Service to take part in the ideas competition ‘Marke Österreich’ [The Stamp/ Brand of Austria], with their approach to Austrian identity to be visualised in the form of a stamp. As part of the event, all of the stamp designs will be shown and the term ‘stamp’ in its double meaning discussed. In a roundtable discussion with experts, the question of how Austria as a ‘design label’ functions will be addressed. How much can design contribute to ‘nation branding’? Following the discussion the competition’s winning stamp will be announced. It will realised in 2012 as part of the special issue stamp programme. Ravi Naidoo (za) TALKING ABOUT: CHANGE
Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola (pl) JUST A THING
Ravi Naidoo is the founder and managing director of Interactive Africa, a Cape Town based media and marketing company. After studying economics and physiology at the University of CapeTown he worked as account director at Young and Rubicam, and, after founding Interactive Africa, received recognition for the project management of e.g. the First African in Space Mission and the marketing and pitching of South Africa’s bid to host the 2010 Football World Cup. Also, he directed projects and initiatives promoting IT development and telecommunications in Africa. Nonetheless, Ravi is possibly best known for establishing the international Design Indaba, which has become recognized as one of the world’s leading design institutions through its flagship conference and expo annually held in Cape Town. Recently, Design Indaba expanded to also include community-oriented projects.
The exhibition features the latest works – never shown before – of 10 Polish designers and design groups: Aze design, Beton, Paweł Grobelny, Krystian Kwieciński, Lapolka, Malafor, Bartosz Mucha, Piotr Stolarski, Arek Wolski and Łukasz Wysoczyński. Some of them, like Malafor or Paweł Grobelny, are already mature authors, well-known in Europe. Others, like Krystian Kwieciński and Łukasz Wysoczyński have only just started their artistic careers. All of them, however, are gifted designers whose works show amazing imagination and a sense of humour; they provoke, make us think about the role of design in our life, prove that simple questions can receive surprising answers. The theme of JUST A THING gave the artists a chance for free interpretation. The curator set a task to design an ordinary object which would fit into a plywood box of standard dimensions of 75×75×75 cm. The only constraint that limited the designers was the size of the box.

Sofia Design Week IS THERE OR ISN‘T THERE – BULGARIAN PRODUCT DESIGN NOW “Is There Or Isn’t There” is an exhibition of ideas realized by twelve Bulgarian designers. Most of them live and work in Sofia, while a few have chosen to set up their own studios in different European countries. The exhibition brings together projects that are unique because of their artistry, simplicity, material, style and execution, all united by an aesthetic uncommon in the Bulgarian mass market. This is not an objective and comprehensive exhibition. It shows no examples of successfully completed projects for industrial production – faucets, yogurt pots or plastic chairs for restaurants. It consists of a subjective selection made on the basis of interesting and remarkable developments. The long-term objective of the exhibition is to grow into a platform that supports, promotes and launches Bulgarian product design at home and abroad. (Adriana Andreeva Dimitrova, curator)
stadtpark. (at/hu/pl) FUNCTIONAL_GREEN The city today appears to have been completely planned, with greening having been reduced to measures affecting the composition of the layout. In a joint effort with institutions in the vicinity and volunteers, we will carry out green interventions on and around Volkertplatz. Through the cultivation of useful plants, a new consciousness for food in an urban environment is intended to be created and urban farming tried out. A central aspect of our work here will involve examining the Volkertmarkt. We will be asking what the strengths of a market are in today’s world and whether new solutions are conceivable that would convert the market from being reliant on imported foodstuffs into a concept of direct production, thus transforming the market into a unique selling proposition. Stamm SMALL WORLDS Christian Haas (de)
stilwerk Wien RECYCLING DESIGN PRIZE
With his latest work for the crystal manufacturer Theresienthal, the German designer Christian Haas presents a stackable cosmos. Every single element of his ‘Small Worlds’ is in itself useful, decorative, and created with the finest craftsmanship. If one places the components together, a small storybook world appears. The results of classical glass-working techniques like overlay, cutting, and engraving are not only decorative, but are part of the whole story. Ever since the revival of its manufactory, the glass producer Theresienthal in the Bavarian Forest has strongly invested in collaborations with international designers. Building on a carefully preserved tradition of craftsmanship reaching back to 1836, a number of new drinking glass series and decorative objects have been produced in recent years in collaboration with renowned designers.
For the first time the high-profile Recycling Design Prize will be presented in the Vienna ‘stilwerk’. The design award honours products by talented young designers that are created and produced from recycled materials. The show is already being seen in ‘stilwerk’ buildings in Berlin and Düsseldorf between July and September 2011. After that it will travel to Vienna and will be on show within the framework of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. As of October 1st the award-winning products will be waiting to be explored on all four floors of the Vienna ‘stilwerk’. The shops located in the ‘stilwerk’ building will join in the celebration and offer you light refreshments. The Recycling Design Prize was already presented for the fourth time in October 2010 at the design museum MARTa, located in Herford, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The assignment for the new designers was to discover hidden qualities in discarded items and then to turn them into something useful.

Hans Taus Einrichtungen ACOUSTIC SIGNALS Private space, even with other people around? Not only talk about sustainability, but live it? Put new creative ideas into practice yourself in no time? The solution is the ‘Buzzispace’! With the material ‘Buzzi felt’, a maximal sound insulation is achieved and simultaneously recycling ideas implemented, for it is 100 per cent made of used PET-bottles. The ‘Buzzi felt’ thus unites two topical subjects: ecological awareness in the form of recycling, and combating noise pollution, the latter of which affects all of us daily, especially in an urban environment. As part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK , the Hans Taus furniture shop will be showing possibilities of how low-noise islands of private space can be created – at home and at work. Technische Universität Wien Technische Universität Wien ECOLUCY – PAPER SCITUSHOW LIGHTING OBJECTS How does one present highly In the summer semester 2011, twelve students began with the SUDECO (Sustainable Design and Communication Strategies) module of the Department for Spatial and Sustainable Design under the supervision of Erwin K. Bauer, Harald Gründl, Anton Kottbauer, Beatrix Roidinger, and Marc Wallerberger. With sustainability in mind, the idea was to design lighting objects from one material alone; and paper was the choice. Under the label ‘Ecolucy’, lighting objects were developed with the goal of uniting paper, light, sustainability, and design. The exhibition will be accompanied by furniture out of cardboard by Günter Pichler from the ‘Werkstatt Raum’. Works by Martin Breitfellner, Elisabeth Etzler, Johannes Fink, Edith Fuchs, Lisa Geiszler, Dorothee Huber, Philipp Moherndl, Monika Rycerz, Johannes Salzbrunn, Benedikt Schlager, Eva Rauchmann, and Nora Wittmann.
technical information? Under the title ‘sciTUshow’, students of the Vienna University of Technology (TU), Institute of Art and Design, will be displaying seven different designs dealing with creating a better visibility for the TU at international trade fairs. The goal was to adequately present the university’s research achievements in the areas of innovation and sustainability. Besides communication and how long visitors remain at a trade fair stand, such important parameters as the transportability, flexibility, possibility for reuse, and costs have been taken into account. Particularly challenging was how to unite its use by various university institutes, each with its own exhibits, under a subtle corporate identity. Modular, open concepts were the result, which can also be used by the university for presentations outside of a trade fair context.

The products of the Vienna Silver Manufactory have stories to tell: of bourgeois table culture during the era of the “Ringstrasse”, of courtly pomp, but also the dawning of the modern language of forms in the first third of the twentieth century. They are fashioned with extremely high fine silver content, which not only increases their highly assessed material value, but also has an anti-oxidising effect: “suitable for dishwashers”, as is stated on the website of the old established firm. People who know Tomás Alonso’s work – often executed in simple wood, they strike one as light, three-dimensional sketches – will hardly associate him with Viennese silver. So this collaboration is all the more fascinating – Alonso approaches it with the “functionality of the pattern” in mind: a plain tea service with fluted pattern on the underside of the set and the upper side of the tray, both interlocked with each other. An ensemble that simultaneously combines harmony with wilful originality.
Ever since Klaus Mühlbauer inherited his parents’ hat factory in the fourth generation in 2001, the company has been experiencing a highly successful relaunch. Youngat-heart, colourful hat design in top-quality workmanship suddenly cropped up next the classic forms and colours and soon inspired the Viennese and meanwhile Brad Pitt, Madonna and Yoko Ono to wear Mühlbauer hats. You wouldn’t normally put hats into the category of “product design”. But there is surely no doubt that hats and caps have something in common both in function and optics with lampshades. Tomas Kral is a Slovakian designer living in Lausanne. He has singled out these symbolic analogies of hat and lamp for his project with the old established hat factory. With abounding love of detail and equipped with the whole arsenal of processing methods and materials at Mühlbauer, Kral has developed his “Light Objects with Hat”.

Uli Budde (de) AT A.E.KÖCHERT JUWELIERE Founded in 1814, for almost two hundred years A.E.Köchert has been producing costly and prestigious jewellery in consummate workmanship, from classic forms to contemporary design. The former imperial and royal purveyors to the court and inventor of the “Sisi Star” – which the empress liked to wear in her hair – is now opening its workshop to the German designer Uli Budde. Inspired by his conversation with the trained gem specialist Wolfgang Köchert, Budde opted for the cut diamond as his theme. But not in actual fact, because he will show neither veritable diamonds nor “bling-bling”, but a project freed of all the values associated with this most precious stone. With focus on the facet, the geometric elements of the classic brilliantcut are dissected in themselves and re-assembled into a new form. This results in polyhedral bodies, wondrous crystalline configurations and modelled 3D landscapes. Passionswege presentation A.E.Köchert Juweliere 1., Neuer Markt 15 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Fri 10:00–18:00, Sat 10:00–17:00 Cocktail: Mon 3.10., 17:00–20:30

Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien LECTURE FIONA RABY (UK): BETWEEN REALITY AND THE IMPOSSIBLE What happens when you decouple design from the marketplace, when rather than making technology ever more consumable, designers use the language of design to pose questions, entertain, and provoke – to transport our imaginations into parallel but possible worlds? We are concerned not only with the expressive, functional and communicative possibilities of new technologies but also with the social, cultural and ethical consequences of living within an increasingly technologically mediated society. It is absolutely not about prediction, but asking what if ... Speculating, dreaming, and to facilitate reflection on the kind of technologically mediated world we wish to live in. Ideally, one that reflects the complex, troubled people we are, rather than the easily satisfied consumers and users we are supposed to be. (Fiona Raby) Fiona Raby will, as of the winter semester 2011/12 be head of the Department of Industrial Design 2, University of Applied Arts Vienna. Vera Wiedermann (at) FRESHLY BAKED ‘Fresh’ applies not only to the young designer Vera Wiedermann, but also to her installation, which she will present for the very first time at the Frühbauer bakery as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2011. For thousands of years, bread has been the symbol of sustenance, of physical and spiritual energy. With the context of industrial bread production and abundance as backdrop, an installation will emerge which once again takes up the original symbolism of grain, flour, and preparation. The Installation can be visited on October 1st and 8th but can also be viewed through the shop windows during the whole Festival. WAGNER:WERK Museum Postsparkasse GLOBAL VILLAGE. DESIGN – ROOTS TO MODERNITY Exotic objects have always held a fascination for Europeans who came in contact with ethnic groups from far-away lands. Over the centuries the treasure chambers of the rulers of the times were filled. However, articles were largely ignored that could not immediately be recognised as being the creation of an artist, especially such everyday items as drinking vessels or implements. Consistent, fundamental, radical: the designers of today draw inspiration from the anonymous creations when they are looking for primary solutions for a usability problem. New materials and tools create a different surface, another finish, a new vision. The exhibition GLOBAL VILLAGE will juxtapose the original and the modern, exotic examples and European design classics, pointing out the influence of anonymous designers from Africa, Asia, and Latin America on European modernity. Walking-Chair Design Gallery STRANGE MOOSIC INN WIEN Yaya Herman Dune (uk) & Mayon Hanania (fr) ‘We make things and songs’ is the motto of the Walking-Chair Design Studio & Gallery. For the exhibition ‘Strange Moosic Inn Wien’ this will all be turned around! The gallery in the third district is happy to be able to present Yaya Herman Dune, who is primarily known as being the singer/songwriter of the successful anti-folk duo ‘Herman Dune’. With illustrations, storyboards, drawings, and objects, ‘Strange Moosic Inn Wien’ will show a tantalising cross-section of Yaya’s artistic activities beyond music. There will also be pictures that have been jointly created with his partner, the artist Mayon Hanania. For the opening on 3 October, Yaya will interrupt a world tour in order to be able to personally present his works in Vienna. We’ll have to see if his guitar somehow also finds its way into his luggage. Let’s hope so!
Wien Energie ELECTRIC CHARGING STATION DESIGN Wien Energie is Austria’s largest regional supplier of energy and promotes modern, environmentally sound, and tried-and-tested technologies. Also in the area of energy infrastructure for e-vehicles, they help to create sensible means of electric mobility. The Department of Architecture and City Planning of the City of Vienna (MA 19) commissioned the design of sustainable, technically easy to realise, and attractive electric charging stations. A panel of experts has unanimously chosen the ‘super-steckdose’ of the GP designpartners firm as the winning project. It will now be presented within the framework of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK . Also to be shown, and compatible with the theme, will be the new ‘Vienna Bike’, by the designer Valentin Vodev. Together the two projects offer a good prospect for new mobility possibilities in Vienna. Programme Partner presentation

Wien Museum KNITTED TIME: EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN IN THE CLOCK MUSEUM Wall clocks are relics of the past: today one learns the time from a watch or mobile phone. Nevertheless, wall clocks still exert a great fascination. Experimental designers have reinvented them in recent times – as both disturbing and captivating objects that are meant to sharpen both our perception and sense of time. The Wien Museum will be showing a small selection of international examples in the Clock Museum, from a knitted clock by the Norwegian designer Siren Elise Wilhelmsen to the ‘Blank Wall Clock’ by Marti Guixé (see above) for Alessi and the ‘flip clock’ (which mostly stands still!) from the Vienna studio breadedEscalope. The Clock Museum offers the perfect surroundings for the presentation: it accommodates one of the most important clock collections in Europe. Marvels of astronomy can be seen here, as well as the famous Viennese ‘lantern clocks’ from the Biedermeier era.

Zachl & Hanserl (at) LET THE CHIPS FALL … AND THEY MUST! Core for the development of the regionally inspired works by Zachl & Hanserl (Styria/Upper Austria) is their method of prototype construction. Also important for them is to carry out an extensive portion of the fabrication themselves, which means that they can play a larger role in realising the nuances. The design duo’s student studio has therefore been chosen as the site of the exhibition: the workshop situation will allow a direct inspection of their way of working. The Upper Austrian tradition of craftsmanship is linked here with the power of modern design. This combination produces furniture and utensils that are simple and timeless, but which are still influenced by proven historical elements.
