Dear readers! Dear festival public! We’re popping the corks, letting off design fireworks, and from now on we’re double digit! We’re celebrating our tenth birthday with a program worthy of the event and an occasional party here and there. And this year, we’re also shouting out loud: Ahoy! Because our Guest Country is called the Czech Republic. This will be evident in several places, including an exhibition in our fantastic Festival Head quarters in the former Bothe & Ehrmann Exhibition Halls on Schloßgasse 14 –

which casts a clear spotlight on our Focus District: Margareten! The Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure has yet again put a special focus on the district during the festival. Moreover, the 5th District has its own particular place in the history of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK: When Tulga Beyerle, Thomas Geisler, and I initiated the festival in 2007, our first office was on Margaretenstraße 96. For four years, we have been residing in the stilwerk Wien, in the beautiful tower by Jean Nouvel. And the festival has developed further quite apart from this: in budget, staff numbers, and above all in program range. What hasn’t changed is our aspiration – to contribute to a design discourse at home and abroad.

In the Debut format, this year under the patronage of the aws, we are not only bringing two European educational institutes to Vienna, but also want to create a link between the start-up incubators of the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg and the design scene, namely with the UMPRUM from Prague – because a cooperation between the two sectors is logical but still doesn’t always happen. Yet, when it happens it is almost always a great success. What’s new, what’s different? We have reconstructed our Laboratory and asked Erwin K. Bauer, our long-time curator for everything graphic, to organize a symposium. We invited others to design a magazine “live” as it were – the process can be followed in the Open Office in the Festival Headquarters.

And because we are admittedly proud of what has gone on in the last ten years, a sumptuous volume on the festival with more than 400 pages is being published by umstaetter Verlag, and we naturally wish to take this opportunity to recommend it to you. In the course of producing it, PGM Marketing Research was assigned to make a study on the industrial sustainability of the festival. One of my favorite sentences from this: “For 83.3 % [...] the festival is pivotal for the development of Vienna as a design location. Vienna owes its fixed place on the international design map to the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK.” Meanwhile, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK owes its success on one hand to the outstanding commitment of the team, on the other its supporters, many of them since the festival’s foundation. Pioneer spirit and perseverance have been proven by both – for which I personally offer my warmest thanks! But how do you measure success? Among other things on the constantly growing number of visitors. They are becoming more and more international, which is a cause of great pleasure both for us and our esteemed partner WienTourismus. I wish to take the opportunity here of thanking you as our public and hope that the next ten days will run just as they have done in the last ten years – we shall meet, share knowledge, and together make Vienna into a “city full of design”. Lilli Hollein and the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK team

Preface

We are delighted that the Federal Chancellery has yet again assigned to us the organization of the outstanding artist award for experimental design. The award-winning projects can be seen this year in an exhibition in the Festival Headquarters. Designers from Austria who have shown special achievements in the past ten years will be distinguished with the Swarovski Design Medal, awarded for the first time. It will be presented as part of a celebration organized by the University of Applied Arts and the MAK in honor of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK – this is a great honor for us, and an exciting and emotional occasion.

This year, we are turning to industrial design with Doris Rothauer as curator and have merged it with the theme of mobility – an opportune theme, particularly since the ÖBB and Rosenbauer are on board.

7

This year, we have many opportunities to do so: Just a few days ago, we had two openings, firstly our exhibition in the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York, and also our contribution to the Austria Design Net at the London Design Biennale.

Greeting 8

Thomas Drozda FEDERAL MINISTER FOR ARTS AND CULTURE, CONSTITUTION AND MEDIA

Gerhard Hirczi MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE VIENNA BUSINESS AGENCY

Almost 37.000 visitors, dozens of exhibitions and even more talks – for ten years now the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has been transforming the federal capital into a design city. For one whole week, this means: experimentation, exhibitions, strolling through the city, marveling at the experience – all based on the premise of discovering beauty in things. A trail that during the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK never ceases to reveal new facets and paths.

Happy Birthday, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK – in the name of the Vienna Business Agency, I warmly congratulate you on your tenth anniversary!

As part of the anniversary edition, the outstanding artist award for experimental design sponsored by the Federal Chancellery is being awarded yet again this year. The award is endowed with 10.000 Euro and pays tribute to exactly the kind of courage to experiment that we experience every year at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK in the form of fascinating innovations. The focus this year, 2016, is on the Viennese district of Margareten: From carpenter’s shop to neon workshop, from piano maker to social design entrepreneurs – Austria’s biggest design festival reflects avant-garde initiatives that demonstrate how optics and haptics influence our life and our emotional selfworth. I congratulate the entire team of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK on their anniver sary and wish visitors a thrilling and enjoyable time making their discoveries!

Having been involved right from the start, we have not only observed the evolution of the festival with interest, but also directly participated in many of the program items. As on-site agency, the connection of traditional industry with the creative industries has always been especially close to our hearts. This relationship is intensifying continually, and it is our job to promote and conso lidate it. This year, we are especially focusing on brainstorming, digitalized machine worlds, urban crafts, and design. In short: urban production in the digital age. As a production location, Vienna offers much more than many of us would ever suspect and most of us know. We are resolved to provide for more awareness. Not only, but also through our program contributions to this anniversary edition of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK.

Digitalization – not only a catchword for future developments, but also a dominant topic, here and now. It has acted as the greatest transformer and motor for innovation since the discovery of book printing. There is no area of life that it does not affect. Nor does it stop – and this in particular – at education and art. On the contrary, people have never had so much access to education as they do today. Digitalization offers new, undreamed-of opportunities for creating innovative works and enables an intensive and fertile networking of artistic creativity with academic and scientific research. A successful example of this development is the format Debut, with which the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK this year is bringing together two outstanding educational institutions from Austria and the Czech Republic. The digitalizationoriented design concepts and interaction spaces invite people to immerse themselves in real and virtual worlds and clearly show: The future is now! Accordingly, I wish to congratulate Austria’s biggest design festival on a decade of successful achievements and wish all visitors an inspiring and fascinating time at the anniversary edition.

Greeting

Harald Mahrer STATE SECRETARY IN THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF SCIENCE, RESEARCH AND ECONOMY

9

Ten years of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK have contributed decisively to ensure that Vienna stands not only for a rich imperial heritage, but also for contemporary art and modern design. The festival demonstrates in numerous sites and venues throughout the city how design influences our everyday life and lifestyle. With initiatives like the annual Focus District – this year Margareten – and the Passionswege format, which brings together international artists with craft industries at home, it additionally promotes the development of the city and its neighborhoods. Guided tours provide orientation for the now more than 36.000 visitors through the wide-ranging festival program and lead international guests as well as the local population to fascinating places off the beaten track. I offer my heartfelt congratulations to the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK on its tenth anniversary and wish the organization team lots of energy and even more ideas with which they can continue their creative work as actively as ever in shaping the future of the city.

Festival Headquarters 23

This year, by choosing the former Bothe & Ehrmann Exhibition Halls, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is moving into probably the most nuanced festival living room in its ten years of history. The neoclassical building style and the accentuated architectural division between business and living zones are prototypical of a pre-First World War, medium-sized operation. What was originally a shop for a cabinet-making workshop producing reproduction furniture for the whole of the monarchy, now houses the business activities of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. With a whole array of talks, workshops, and exhibitions, the facilities in the listed building on Schloßgasse 14 will for ten whole days be the pivot and hub VIENNA DESIGN WEEK of Austria’s biggest Festival Headquarters in the former Bothe & Ehrmann Exhibition Halls design festival. 5., Schloßgasse 14

Pop-up Heuriger Zum Gschupftn Ferdl in the inner courtyard of the Festival Headquarters To celebrate the tenth birthday of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the team surrounding “Ober-Ferdl” Ferdinand Freninger – who this year already opened the Gspritztn Ferdl by the Danube Canal – are spontaneously relocating the urban Heurige (traditional wine inn) concept of Moriz Piffl and Michael Lanner onto Schloßgasse.

The Gschupfte Ferdl in the Raimundhof (6., Windmühlgasse 20) also keeps a regulars’ table free for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK public throughout the entire festival season – right until closing time. When the Festival Headquarters shuts its doors in the evening, the “spritzers and flitters” can simply flit to where it’s all happening.

Ferdl has dreamed up delicacies and spritzers – wine and soda –, siphoned soda, and other Heurigen classics. In the evening, the pop-up Heurige takes over as festival meeting point. The music program varies between DJ sound and Viennese song. For the daily spritzer cocktail starting at 6pm, Ferdl gives guests a liter of siphoned soda free of charge for every purchase of a bottle of wine.

The pop-up Heurige was created in cooperation with the designer Vera Widermann (MOA Eating Products) and the Bildwerk agency, which is responsible for the pixel projections at Ferdl’s. Opening hours 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Spritzer cocktail daily 6pm–8pm

Focus District 31

In the center of the city, in the center of attention. Margareten, this year’s Focus District, is a typical inner-city district. Urban, densely populated, only few green areas. Simultaneously, the 5th district is known as a working-class district with numerous blocks of council flats. In the nineteenth century, Margareten was at first actually a bastion for artisans and craftsmen. A parallel to the present. Because today, too, the district is a genuine hub of the creative industries with many locally producing business enterprises. For ten whole days, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is opening up the district and staging its activities here in new spaces, supporting old established enterprises, and spotlighting the district in all its facets. This year’s Festival Headquarters take over the former Bothe & Ehrmann Exhibition Halls, only a few yards away from Margaretenplatz. In other words, focus on all of Margareten. Also and especially with the Vienna Business Agency and its creative Map Focus District Margareten center departure. S. 146

Guest Country 37

Vítám tě! Year for year, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK shifts the focus and grants us a richly detailed insight into the creative design of another European country. This year’s guest: our neighbor, the Czech Republic. But we’re calling out “Ahoj” not only to a young generation of Czech designers in the course of the great Guest Country exhibition. The Czech Republic’s dynamic and high-quality design scene, which, similar to that of Austria, looks back at a long handicrafts tradition, is represented across the board of all festival formats. For instance, there are the tours in Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat in Brno, re-opened in 2012. Or the exhibition of works created at the renowned Prague UMPRUM Academy, presenting outstanding student works of recent years. Apropos. The projects of the Passionswege and the Program Partners are also flanked in a striking way this year by the new and traditional school of Czech design.

GENERATION: THE BEST OF YOUNG CZECH DESIGN OKOLO

The collective show GENERATION presents works of a dozen of young Czech designers and studios who have been very active on the Czech contemporary design scene in the last ten years. The exhibition, summarizing the creative influence of the youngest generation of Czech established designers, demonstrates the progressive maturity of the scene in a post-socialist society. The show is divided into six thematic parts including furniture, glass, porcelain, lighting, product design, and interior objects. The exhibition design itself consists of numerous Ikea tables highlighting the contrast between the mainstream living conditions and the unique contributions of the designers within. 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 5pm–8pm Curator guided tour: Sat 1.10., 5.30pm Finissage: Sun 9.10., 5pm–8pm Festival Headquarters

Talks 41

Let’s talk about it! In lectures and panels the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK addresses various aspects of design: While Hubert Klumpner for instance sounds out new paths in urban development, the curator Oliver Elser focuses on the architectural impact of the current refugee situation. Meanwhile, the departure talks take a look at the original design site of Margareten – on one hand, the 5th district is host to probably the liveliest scene in Vienna, on the other, it was here that the idea for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK was first conceived. The journalist Ulrike Weiser turns to another groundbreaking event. With an eye on the presidential election, she discusses how metaphors generate universal images. In addition: With discourse events arranged across the board of the entire festival program, this year as well offers very many other opportunities for knowledge sharing, discussions, and reflections.

In a world in which bottom-up and top-down intentions hardly converge, well-intentioned spatial planning usual means standstill. Urban-Think Tank aspires to attain a now imperative change of paradigms and a sensitization for the quality of all areas of urban life. Because: The models of urban development now being practiced lead incrementally to insularity and ghetto formation. In these fragmented urban environments the ultimate good, that of equality of access to resources, services and security, is as a consequence becoming more and more of a privilege. Questions remain unanswered, the quality of life deteriorates. Urban-Think Tank focuses on dynamically alternative urban design concepts and influential urban design solutions aiming to bring about a revolution in urban development. Hubert Klumpner, who holds the Chair of Architecture together with Alfredo Brillembourg in the ETH Zurich, proposes several of these concepts and projects of the Urban-Think Tank. The German contribution to this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale addressed the impact of the refugee situation. But you don’t have to go to Venice to experience it: A database at www.makingheimat.de shows buildings for refugee accommodation and presents eight principles for a successful “arrival city”. But how to go on after this? Germany has a housing crisis, hundreds of thousands of homes are needed. What are the concepts needed to overcome this challenge? Is this the “hour of the architects”? Or just a gleeful occasion for the construction industry? Oliver Elser is curator at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt. Thu 6.10., 5pm Festival Headquarters

Ten years ago, the Neigungsgruppe Design on Margaretenstraße 96 in the 5th district brought the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK into being. A lot has happened since. The festival is growing steadily, sets new priorities to keep pace with the times, and thus transforms the city year by year into a focused showroom and arena for design. For its tenth anniversary, the founding team now take a look back: Tulga Beyerle, Thomas Geisler, and Lilli Hollein talk about the experiences and challenges that a festival like the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK brings with it and about the importance of the spatial location in a changing city.

The villa of Greta and Fritz Tugendhat in Brno, the Czech Republic, was built in 1929/1930 after designs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A monument of modern architecture! Comprehensive renovations and restorations between 2010 and 2012 have completely re-established the building’s original appearance and that of the adjacent garden. The interiors are now adorned with exact replicas of the original furnishings; an exhibition about the architect and the owner couple provide further insights. The villa is opening its gates and doors especially for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK on three dates. How smart is Margareten? The departure tour FASHION IN FOCUS gives us the answers. Because here, in this year’s Focus District, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK uncovers smart Viennese fashion design in numerous showrooms and studios. On a virtual catwalk right across and around the district, participants visit fashion enterprises and ask what it is that makes the works in the 5th District so special. They take a look behind the scenes and get inside views of the everyday goings-on behind the fashion labels working in Vienna. The tour concentrates especially on informing about origins and production processes and making them accessible. With elfenkleid, Margaret and Hermione, Ute Ploier, and Brandmair.

TOUR 1: VIENNA DESIGN WEEK IN THE INNER CITY DESIGN DISTRICT Gabriele Steiner-Scharfetter

The inner city of Vienna is a design district through and through: this is where tradition meets innovation and old-established production techniques meet contemporary design ideas. The stops on the guided walk show projects from the Passionswege and give participants in-depth insights into inno vatory collaborations between traditional handicraft concerns and designers from all over the world. They share knowledge in open work processes and put this into practice as new installations, graphic design concepts, or works of furniture. On the way through the inner city the tour stops at galleries and exhibition rooms as well as Viennese businesses and shops – ranging from glass and chandelier production to porcelain manufacture and the long-established Viennese petit-point tradition … Sat 1.10., 10am–12pm, Wed 5.10., 5pm–7pm, Fri 7.10., 4pm–6pm, Sat 8.10., 10am–12pm For details see info box * Start: 1., Michaelerplatz

Margareten is a creative district – and this year especially so. Because the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and its projects happening here in countless corners show how social aspects and local knowledge can be integrated in creative processes. The tour makes its way through the district and provides an inside view of projects in the Stadtarbeit and Passionswege formats. The project presented by students of the NDU St. Pölten in partnership with Caritas Vienna directs an extra focus onto participatory product design. These new paths through Margareten give priority to letting participants discover things together: They experience Work in progress live, get to know projects with and for one another, and discover design that brings people together. A tour for everyone – the Viennese, visitors to Vienna, and the “new Viennese”. Mon 3.10., 11am–1pm+2.30pm–4.30pm, Tue 4.10., 11am–1pm For details see info box * Start: 5., Margaretenplatz 6 57

This tour revolves around social design. And social design in turn puts the person in focus. Also the exhibition in the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art by the designer and researcher Ebru Kurbak deals with human community and communication, knowledge sharing and reciprocal regard. It forms the start of this bike tour. After an interim stop at the pop-up café of the exhibition WILLING & ABLE: ACCIDENT / OCCIDENT / ORIENT, bikers visit the Stadtarbeit project of Oh THAT Place, the self-proclaimed hub of grassroots movements, also committed to the positive integration of new refugees in Vienna. At the end of the bike tour, you can take part in the on-site workshop and talk by IntegRADsion. A STROLL THROUGH THE FESTIVAL HEADQUARTERS Leonie Spitzer

The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is already celebrating its tenth birthday! Set up with pencils and paper, children roam through the Festival Headquarters past exotic birds by zerunianweisz and see what they are twittering to them. They hear the stories of the loose collective Objektas and investigate how mischer’traxler have hidden time in a table. And finally they design things themselves: the young festival visitors capture their impressions in a small brochure. The children’s workshop lasts two hours and caters for children aged 5 and over. Happy Birthday! Among the most wonderful and touching aspects of birthdays and anniversaries are the affection and wishes that arrive from others. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is being celebrated, for instance by two institutions we have been closely associated with right from the start, the University of Applied Arts and the MAK. We look back through the medium of a book describing the festival’s strategies and showing many projects – the presentation will take place under the brilliant chandelier of the bar in the Hotel InterContinental. The Hofmobiliendepot Imperial Furniture Collection is also doing the time warp and again inviting the same group of Austrian designers who were involved in 2007 DESIGN10 – now as RE-DESIGN10. Ten birthday tokens in a special form have arrived from befriended designers – the edition was a lovely surprise for us!

VIRIBUS UNITIS – RE-DESIGN Hofmobiliendepot – Imperial Furniture Collection

The exhibition DESIGN10 was held for the first VIENNA DESIGN WEEK ten years ago in the Hofmobiliendepot. Exactly ten years later, the same designers and exhibition organizers are getting together again with the motto “Viribus Unitis – all pulling together” and organizing the exhibition RE-DESIGN10.

Once again, each designer confronts an object from the museum collection with an own design. The pairs of objects are scenically arranged under the direction of the Viennese design studio Walking Chair, and each pair tells its own little story. As a further development of the original concept, the pairs of objects are not placed in a neutral setting this time – an exhibition room – but juxtaposed to the historical exhibit in the permanent collection of the Hofmobiliendepot.

The exhibition in this traditional focal point of Austrian furniture design promises a fascinating dialogue between old and new and opens up new perspectives onto the museum’s holdings. Featuring the following designers: bkm design working, group, Studio Dankl and Lisa E. Hampel, dottings, For Use, Lucy.D, Sebastian Menschhorn, Patrick Rampelotto, Polka, Robert Rüf, Soda Designers

Ten years of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK also means ten years of Kollektiv Fischka. The Viennese Kollektiv Fischka – Images for Many People translates the conceptual and coincidental into authentic visual imagery, thus forming the important foundation for a functioning and successful visual communication for one of the most important design festivals in Europe. Illustrating projects, contributions, and agendas of designers, but also making them live in clear form and beyond the limits of the festival was and is the passionate focus of ten photographers.

57

Starting in the 1960s, an international bevy of glamorous stars became established, using the global hotel chains as their bases. The InterContinental was undoubtedly the premier hotel in such a chain, welcoming stars from film, music and fashion – including princess Grace Patricia, the young Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, and The Who, also Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and more. It was not a seldom occurrence to meet music legends like Falco at the bar, which with its opulent chandelier still radiates an aura of glamour to this day. The InterContinental Vienna set new standards not only in the past. Currently, the famous Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld is working on a redesign of the hotel. An expert bridge builder between Viennese tradition and international contemporary design, the bar of the InterContinental is the ideal location for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK as represen tative of ten festival years, which have been packed into a comprehensive book published on the occasion of the festival’s anniversary. The sumptuous volume with 400 pages and published by umstaetter is being celebrated by the InterContinental Vienna with a birthday and book presentation party.

MAGAZINE VIENNA DESIGN WEEK

Ten years, ten days, ten double spreads. On the occasion of the this year’s anniversary, Austrian designers are each invited to collect impression on one of the festival days and to transpose these on the following day into an ad-hoc magazine in the Festival Headquarters Open Office. As a freely accessible workroom, the temporary office demonstrates design processes, creates points of contact, every evening providing a meet-andgreet environment. Within a period of ten days, a multifaceted compendium is created in a limited edition – a magazine, so to speak, as a birthday token. You can meet the following designers in the Open Office: Fri 30.9. Sat 1.10. Sun 2.10. Mon 3.10. Tue 4.10. Wed 5.10. Thu 6.10. Fri 7.10. Sat 8.10. Sun 9.10.

What happens when you make the rich wealth of knowledge inhabiting Viennese handicrafts accessible to highly promising national and international designers? Certainly, a great deal to discover. Even today. For the tenth anniversary of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK an evaluation study was commissioned and implemented by the festival (co-financed by Vienna Chamber of Commerce and the Vienna Business Agency), which will now be made public during the festival. Directly following, former and current participants talk about their experiences within the pioneering festival format of the Passionswege. What has happened until now? How promising is the model for the future in times when local production is becoming more and more important? And what do the Passionswege contribute to an awareness of this? The first CITY SHADES by the Czech artist Maxim Velčovský were produced during the Passionswege 2008, an adapted variant was commissioned and purchased by WienTourismus. In his collaboration with the long established Viennese firm of J. & L. Lobmeyr, Velčovský oriented himself at the time on the principles of the magic lantern and shadow theater. Since then, the CITY SHADES have traveled far as an example of outstanding Austrian design – Berlin, Tokyo, Brno, and more. For this year’s VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Guest Country, the Czech Republic, WienTourismus is sponsoring the new presentation of the installation. Comprised of parts from chandeliers and drinking glasses from the J. & L. Lobmeyr workshop, they show the silhouettes of three cities where people can marvel at the breathtaking works of the Viennese glass manufactory – including resplendent chandeliers in the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Kremlin in Moscow, and countless places in Vienna.

Birthday champagne! Inspired by the rugged and sublime forms of glaciers and mountains, the French designer Alexandre Echasseriau designed an exquisitely gleaming champagne bucket during last year’s Passionswege, which Antonio Umani, the Master at the Silber Manufactur, enthusiastically promoted. Prior to use, the entire cooler is frozen in the freezer. Then, in the course of an efferve scent evening, the glacier slowly melts and exposes the perfectly polished silver surface under the thin frozen layer. What appears is pure handicraft. À votre santé! For the tenth anniversary of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK the Wiener Silber Manufactur, besides “ICE-BERG”, is showing other projects that were produced in recent years for the Passionswege – including the “HAMMER Lamp” by BIG-GAME, the “Landscape” series by Charlotte Talbot, and the “Tea Service” by Tomás Alonso.

Formats 73

With its curated formats Debut, Industrial Design + Mobility, Passionswege, Stadtarbeit, Symposium, and Special, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has taken on the task of creating a new awareness for design. The intention is not merely to shift its aesthetic function into focus, but above all to accentuate those aspects that make design into a central part of our daily life. Thanks to their different approaches, each format illuminates and presents yet another aspect of this kind.

Debut

Debut University of Applied Sciences meets Academy. Start-up incubator meets artistic innovation hub. Hagenberg meets Prague in Vienna. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has initiated the Debut format to focus on a selection of outstanding educational institutions from home and abroad. In the process, Debut acts as an international networking platform and is simultaneously an autonomous arena for aspiring design. The works on show are prominent examples of living educational culture and the design concepts of a new generation. In 2016, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK greets the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria – Campus Hagenberg and the renowned Prague Academy of UMPRUM – and covers the entire range from digitalization of design processes all the way to architecture, product and graphic design. The Debut is sponsored by aws Kreativwirtschaft.

When real and virtual worlds merge. PIEdeck, the experimental interaction space developed by the research group Playful Interactive Environments (PIE) consists of a large-scale projection, multiple virtual reality headsets, and a sensitive laser tracking system from the technology forge of the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz. Up to 25 persons can move simultaneously in the space, affect it, thus entering into virtual and real interaction. In this way, the PIEdeck application INVISIBLE WALLS especially created for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK focuses on the theme of interpersonal distances – INVISIBLE WALLS – between the actors. Visitors can find out more on the installation design in a knowledge sharing session with students on site. In the accompanying talk also provides an opportunity for delving deeper into the theme of co-located interactive spaces.

Industrial Design

Industrial Design + Mobility Design is social design in the widest sense – a strategy for improving people’s lives – and this is also applicable to industrial design. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is accentuating this as a key theme this year. Whether service industry design surrounding a product, whether process competency, or the approach which understands design as a holistic, integrative task – it’s always about solutions that combine sustainability, user-friendliness, technological innovation, and process optimization. Solutions that only emerge through the interaction between strategic design and innovative industrial competence, through a cooperative process shared between designers and business enterprises. It is the goal of the industrial design items in this year’s program to demonstrate this, and they will play a more important role in the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK festival also in future. Passionswege

Passionswege The name is the game. Because, with multiple stations in a single street, this year the format is path-breaking a way of passion through the Focus District. Four other stops in the inner city join the handicraft concerns, which are all coincidentally situated on Wehrgasse. Ever since it first started, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has organized the Passionswege to bring together international and Austrian designers with Viennese production companies. These can then experiment, create, and transfer knowledge in open work processes, free from all commercial restraints. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK shows the results of each collaborative project – object or installation – directly on site, granting backstage views and insights into authentic and traditional Viennese workshops and business premises. Curators: Lilli Hollein and Julia Hürner

The Passionswege are sponsored by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.

The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten has a history going back three hundred years and is the second oldest in Europe. Since the very start, this Austrian enterprise has been outstanding not only for the high quality of porcelain, but also for its exclusively handcrafted production and painting. Here, every single piece is unique, here the company can fall back on a centuries-old repertoire of forms and decorations. The Prague design studio DECHEM – Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek – were inspired by this rich tradition and chose a table lamp as starting object for their Passionswege project. Its base manifests the classic Augarten vase form. Using the techniques and materials of the porcelain manufactory and the favorite material of the two designers – glass –, they have enabled Viennese handicraft tradition to beam out through the medium of a contemporary light source. 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Sat 10am–6pm, Sun closed Cocktail: Fri 30.9., 5pm–8.30pm Flagshipstore Augarten Vienna 1., Spiegelgasse 3 14

When the designer David Tavcar, who was born in Slovenia, first visited the Maria Stransky petit-point manufactory, founded in 1932, he was bowled over by the handicraft skills of the embroiderers there. True to tradition, classic motifs and images are produced from a palette of more than 800 color tones with up to 2.500 stitches per square inch – they are therefore very easy to distinguish from machine-made products. In his Passionswege project, Tavcar takes his inspiration from the transformations between “zoom-in” and “zoom-out”, also from the almost exclusively analogue production processes of embroidery manufacture – something that signifies great quality for the designer, a handicraft enthusiast. In his microscopic treatment, Tavcar transposes Maria Stransky’s floral motifs – roses, violets, edelweiss – into contemporary embroidered motifs, thus accentuating the striking cell structures of every petal: beautifully burge oning accomplishments of petit point and pointillist bionics.

GLEN BAGHURST (SE/AU) with Klavierwerkstatt Felix Lenz

Piano master builder Felix Lenz works in his workshop in Margareten on the fine tuning of strings, hammers, and keys – and makes almost everything himself. He services, restores, and repairs pianos of all kinds from upright to grand. So it is no wonder that so many piano lovers trust his talent. Glen Baghurst, too, is an enthusiastic craftsman and plays the piano in his spare time. As part of the Passionswege the designer, who lives in Sweden and Australia, has turned his attention to the individual components of the classical music instrument. The piano workshop salesroom is striking for its raw beauty and remarkable acoustics. He now presents a chair that is inspired in every way by the piano in construction technique and aesthetics. A design composition – in the truest sense of the word!

It is almost two hundred years since Josef Lobmeyr opened his first shop. Whereas it is exactly ten years since the former purveyor to the court for glass refining, chandeliers, and drinking glasses realized a Passionswege project in partnership with Martino Gamper, a South Tyrolean who lives in London. In 2016, Gamper is coming back to Vienna to work in a new edition of this cooperation, turning his attention once more to the decorative surfaces and elaborate techniques that J. & L. Lobmeyr has cultivated and brought to perfection in the course of its history as a firm – cutting, engraving, etching, and sandblasting, also the various forms of handpainting. In his brilliant new perspective, Martino Gamper experiments with these techniques, mixes them, and creates a highly decorative modern drinking glass.

The firm of Neon Kunze is older than its name suggests. The Viennese enterprise was in fact founded 150 years ago as a sign painting business. Since the 1950s, it has also produced neon advertisements. Today, the range of products includes light advertisements with neon and LED technology, lettering, signs, and foliations, also advertising media made of acrylic glass and aluminum. When the Dutch design duo rENs – Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsteren – turned up at the neon production site on Wehrgasse, a creative partnership soon crystallized. Because color plays a key role for rENs as well – most of all red, the elemental color for neon. The main focus of their Passionswege projects lies in the creation of new color nuances and light effects. Tubular lighting produced in an experimental context will be shown containing new and unusual color play effects. Let there be neon light!

What matters to the carpenter Philipp Cibulka is to make furniture in such a way that it delights his customers and fits quite naturally into home environments. The combination of beautiful material, good planning, and optimal finishing contributes much to this aspiration. “I’m a carpenter. I like to make tables and chairs. It’s my passion.” These words of Cibulka’s inspired the young Czech designer and alumnus of the Prague University UMPRUM Michal Strach. In the picturesque carpentry workshop, his installation sets up contact and visual communication with passers-by. Abstract interiors and unconventional sceneries also presented here impress the Passionswege public in the form of surreal rooms the size of doll’s houses.

Anniversary Program #tenyears

Founded in 1922, the Kunstanstalt für Kupfer druck (Artistic Institute for Copperplate Printing) has been directed for more than forty years by Wolfgang Schön. The firm makes printed matter such as visiting cards, envelopes, and images in manual copperplate engraving – a printing process that was widespread especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As one of the last of his trade, Schön prints today as in the era of Albrecht Dürer from the hand-engraved copperplate, piece by piece, each print a pure and unique artifact. The workshop: a time capsule with view of the Goldenes Quartier. On visiting the printer’s shop in the historic part of the Vienna city, Verena Panholzer and David Einwaller from Studio Es – the first two graphic designers in the Passionswege – developed the idea of making traditional motifs of copperplate printing communicate with a contemporary idiom. The collages thus produced will be presented in Wolfgang Schön’s workshop alongside all the stages in production, thus giving people an impression of the whole process. Stadtarbeit

Stadtarbeit Design in general makes our world more beautiful and more functional. This is especially true of social design. It addres ses social issues and analyses them. It promotes knowledge sharing and challenges its public. Via an open call, a specialist jury chooses four projects that reveal special, creative qualities, and potential in dealing with social issues. Intensive and unconventional in their form of presentation, they show how design alternatives can come to fruition in our daily lives together. And something else is on show: the further development of last year’s winning project of the Erste Bank MoreVALUE Design Award The Erste Bank by Ebru Kurbak. MoreVALUE Design Award is being presented this year for the second time. Sun 9.10., 5.30pm as part of the closing celebration in the Festival Headquarters. Followed by presentation of the winning project.

Jury: Ruth Goubran, Theres Fischill (Erste Bank), Jutta Kleedorfer (Multiple and Interim Use, MA 18), Georg Irsa (Caritas, Archdiocese of Vienna), Andreas Rumpfhuber (Architect), Lilli Hollein, Marlene Leichtfried (VIENNA DESIGN WEEK)

The FEUERKÜCHE – FIRE KITCHEN is a collective public action in which raw materials are transformed in an exemplary process into a functional cooking unit – tableware, pots, and table oven are formed of clay and fired in the log fire, giving them a matte, black surface. A banquet is held whereby recipes brought by all participants are cooked and eaten together at the banqueting table. The project’s hands-on approach provides for an experience of sensuous contact with the raw material of clay and with the archaic activity of cooking at an open fire. The project aims to arouse curiosity about the development stages in the process leading from material to utensil. Project team: Johanna Dehio, Valentina Karga, Mascha Fehse, and Liza Schluder. Detailed program and information will be announced at www.johannadehio.de. The FIRE KITCHEN is produced in part in cooperation with the Caritas Kompa project.

ARCHITECTS BUILD AN OVERDIMENSIONAL LOOM APPARATUS! Once industrialization took hold, textile production shaped Margareten’s identity for a long time afterwards. Today, the only things reminding us of the former production site of the Jewish textile factory Altmann are statues on the façade. The project VEBSHTUL is now transforming the former workers’ district of Margareten once more into an arena for textile production. A construction is being installed on Siebenbrunnenplatz in the form of an overdimensional loom and will be operated by the project team for ten days. Here, the production process will be the actual product. The performative intervention aims to motivate the interaction of visitors in the city space and revive the weaving tradition in people’s memories. Project team: Sarah Beyer, Bianca Gamser, Charlotte Heller, Kadri Muzaqi, Agnes Pachucki, Julia Puchegger, and Lorenz Schreiner. Initiated by Johannes Paar (Department of Building Studies and Design, Vienna University of Technology) and realized in part with the FZhM Research Centre for the History of Minorities. The brand-new launch of a digital city guide. For ten days, YouarehereVienna occupies a temporary open editing office devoted to an intensive treatment of the theory and practice of “Be(come)ing Local”. The focus of the project DESIGNING LOCALITY is on participatory social design – together with festival visitors, old and new locals explore the immediate vicinity, the district of Margareten. Contents based on the investi gations, workshops and talks are edited on site, translated into the guide’s four languages – German, English, Arabic and Farsi/Dari – and are then posted online in real time. In the course of the week, a neighborhood guide for Margareten will be produced on the website of YouarehereVienna, also with the intention of extending it to the social media, hashtag #youareheremargareten. During the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2015, this selection process was followed by a communication process. In an intervention at Stand 129 in the Viktor-Adler-Markt often unnoticed skills made an impact on local public awareness. In the individual workshops, participants passed on knowledge such as

Posing accurate questions, INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS intends to discuss integration as a two-way process through an intervention that seeks to shift the commonly accepted roles: What are you good at? What skills did you have to learn growing up in your country? Which of those skills have you not used since you moved here? What would a person from Austria have to learn to be able to survive in your village? What would you like to teach me? The answers revealed a wide range of skills that have been brought to Austria in recent years along with the people coming from different countries. The exhibition in the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art in Vienna is showing a selection of this knowledge, gathered by Ebru Kurbak during the INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS intervention process. The accompanying catalogue also approaches the theme from various aspects – with instructions for workshop and practice, essays and interviews, it motivates people to spread the idea. 30.9.–9.10., Tue–Sun 10am–5pm, Mon closed Cocktail: Sun 2.10., 6pm–8pm Exhibition until 16.10. As the winner of last year’s Erste Bank MoreVALUE Design Award, INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS is presented this year with an expanded exhibition and a publication. In the run-up to VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2015, the designer and artist Ebru Kurbak visited Caritas educational courses in order to learn more about the skills of the participants. Relationships were struck up and the newly introduced knowledge was shared. Together, they then decided which skills could be taught in workshops and which could be represented better by means of visual instructions.

The sector of communication design is expanding all the time. New media, tools, and methods are presenting new challenges, for designers as well as for recipients. At the same time, the constantly growing possibilities are introducing entirely new forms of interaction, so that designers are increasingly acting as guides in sounding out communication solutions. They network with other disciplines, open up new horizons and consistently develop established areas. The three-part symposium The New Classic presents and discusses theory and practice of very different sectors. The selected task areas should take effect at first sight as classic, hence the reason to investigate their latest development more precisely.

Painting as the supreme discipline within the visual arts is being permanently renewed and dynamized, and this applies as well to classic communication media such as the book. Invented in its primal form more than 2.500 years ago, the book which is printed with movable type has existed since 1377. Today, despite the success of the digital media, more books are being produced and read than ever. No other medium can provide information in such an individually consumable way as the book – a world of its own, conceived and visualized by authors and book designers. Qualities such as format, sequence, rhythm, paper thickness, haptics, printed colors, and new production options offer fascinating opportunities. With the rediscovery of handicraft, today all kinds of analogue design are being invested, from typography to printing and binding. The focus of this symposium is on the collaboration of book designers with architects and artists. Details about procedure and speakers available on the festival website.

91

Starting out from the classic print product, the sector of magazine design has undergone a conspicuous further development. Special interest communities are no longer exclusively accessible by way of printed editions. Far more, the interplay of print and online magazines, social media and externally placed contents through media cooperation are creating a networked, thematically focused universe. The production of content in text, image and sound is shifted into the focus of design. Meanwhile, the readership is no longer the sole target group, but is able to generate dynamic contents itself as community. Paradoxically, this development is also giving a distinct boost to the classic print product: Printed magazines are being experimentally designed, elaborately refined, and delight readers with generous photo space. The magazine is back in a new dimension – or was never away. Details about procedure and speakers available on the festival website.

9.30am–12pm MAGAZINE DESIGN

To support and offer equal opportunities of social participation to all human beings irrespective of disabilities is today a valued objective. Designers can also help to achieve this with inclusive design. The idea of democratic design became manifest already in the functionalist product design of the 1950s and 1960s – although still without the maxims of political correctness. Today, we feel that political correctness in its extreme form is a requirement that is frequently not exactly practicable. The concept of equality, originally positive in motivation, in the end generates imbalance. What are the consequences, if we consistently open up access for all to space, information and services? Is good design that maintains aesthetic criteria then still possible? How might society handle the legitimate demand for equality in a more easygoing way? And what do the solutions look like? Design all the time. This, or similar, is the motto of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, whose team functions multilaterally the whole year round as VIENNA DESIGN OFFICE: as communicator and ambas sador, as organizer and promoter, as agent and consultant. The Special format demonstrates a cross-section of these activities. Hence, the window gallery exhibitions in the stilwerk, changing several times a year, provide for a permanent presentation platform for young design – for instance for the Bureau F. In organizing the Federal Chancellery’s biennial outstanding artist award, the VIENNA DESIGN OFFICE is also a co-contributor to honoring designers. And the Vöslauer Design Competition spotlights the action involved in working as a link in the chain connecting design and industry. By the way, a link was also formed with the Diagonale this year …

In the heart of the inner city, designer Lena Gold and David Tavcar join forces with the filmmakers Johann Lurf and Viktoria Schmid to adapt a former cinema interior into a dreamily sensuous “light play” wonder cabinet. The focus of the show is the cinema itself – its ways of functioning, its magic. While the transition to digital projection has long been accomplished, the iconography of the analogue cinema theater has endured down to this day: the buzz and rattle of the projector, the light clustered into a beam, which first unfolds the entirety of its magic on the screen, the auditorium as location of the “being singular plural” (Jean-Luc Nancy), the cinema as dispositive. And analogue objects themselves confront digital projection in this installation, first set into movement by light. “Reduce to the max” is the leitmotif here of an exhilarating treatment of cinema, design, and architecture. Welcome to the first “light play” theater (as the cinema was first called “Lichtspiel” in German) – in the very literal sense of the word.

When communication concepts flow: With the exhibition FRAGMENT, the Bureau F design studio based in Vienna is presenting in the stilwerk limited edition window gallery its predilection for transposing concepts into resplendently colorful and dynamic images. Flowing textiles take over the space and graphically set the scene. Bureau F loves the stories behind the ideas and places them in the spotlight – in its own idiom and unique aesthetic. In its activities as an agency, Bureau F – consisting of Fabienne Feltus and Philipp Stürzenbecher – specialists in branding, advertising, and design, creates all-embracing concepts for pinpointed communication, makes visions palpable, and imparts a personality to brands. In doing so, it supports its clients with clear strategies for developing immediately recognizable brands. 30.9.–9.10., daily 10am–7pm Cocktail: Tue 4.10., 6pm Exhibition until 6.11. The Vöslauer Design Competition has unearthed bubbling ideas. With the organization and advice of the VIENNA DESIGN OFFICE, Austria’s favorite mineral water invited young designers to solve the task of transporting Vöslauer beverages in bottles of various sizes. With: Clemens Auer, mathak + mahlknecht, Christian Peetz and Patrycja Domanska, Florian Puschmann, and Zitta Schnitt. Two topics – THE TOOL & THE OBJECT – were outlined, for which innovative and realizable solutions were thought up. The winning project of the solicited competition and its implementation will now be presented in an exhibition in the Festival Headquarters. During the last few years, Morag Myerscough’s work and that of the Supergrouplondon have been making quite an impact on the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK team. Alternating between two- and three-dimensional approaches, graphically always enormously incisive, multiple award winner Myerscough creates installations, exhibition architecture, guidance systems, and visual commentaries – and is accordingly one of the most prominent studios in the UK. The designer has collabo rated with some of the most renowned architecture bureaus in the world and is now working among other things on the new permanent exhibition of the London Design Museum, which opens in autumn in its new location. A typographic work is in gestation for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Festival Headquarters – nevertheless, there is no lack of color and pattern. Coincidentally at the same time, visitors can look forward to a major work by Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan at the Steierischer Herbst (Styrian Autumn Festival) in Graz, which has been evolving for several months with participation of the public.

Subtle visuals and representative audios track the emotions that grip craftspeople during glass production. Steam, moisture, gradation, graininess and plasticity tell of a multifaceted production process, the charm of the material and personal experiences of Agnieszka Bar as designer and craftswoman. Glass objects are the result of repeated task performances, which with perpetual routine may easily lead to an army of objects that are always the same. In her exhibition, Bar thus emphasizes the aspect of usable objects – as containers or holders – and the simultaneous uniqueness of the hand-made object. www.agnieszkabar.pl

When seating furniture keeps to a specific arrangement, it results in islands, or, as with the Berlin architecture bureau Kuehn Malvezzi, the so-called CITY ROOMS. Different “city rooms” – inspired among others by those of Adolf Loos – together generate a multi-stratified landscape. The installation was produced on commission of the Finnish design firm of Artek and the Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat. Kuehn Malvezzi already presented it to style the collectors’ lounge at DesignMiami/Basel 2016. The work is now on display during the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK in the Vitra Showroom, highlight is the Kiki Collection from Artek, created in 1960 by the Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara and now remodeled for Kvadrat with fabrics by Raf Simons. www.artek.fi www.kvadrat.dk 30.9.– 8.10., Mon–Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–4pm, Sun closed Cocktail: Fri 30.9., 7.30pm Vitra Showroom 1., Schottenring 12 65

The exhibition POSSIBLE TOMORROWS presents a selection of experimental and technical applications from the fields of biotechnology and synthetic biology in the design context. Contributions from selected designers and artists show speculative areas of application and ideas as well as already tested implementations for the design and material culture of today: cement formed of microorgan isms or fruit-bearing useful plants with textile-producing roots. Is synthetic biology the industrial design of tomorrow? What other applications will the future offer? In the accompanying talk and film screening “Synthetic Biology in Art and Design” visitors will learn more. www.biofaction.com 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 5pm–8pm Talk “Synthetic Biology in Art and Design”: Sun 2.10., 11am–1pm Finissage: Sun 9.10., 5pm–8pm Festival Headquarters

THE MYSTERY OF LIGHTING design:mikimartinek

OTTOMAN PAPER CARPETS BY ARDAN ÖZMENOĞLU Europapier Austria

INDUSTRY 4.0 – THE FUTURE IS NOW ewo

What fascinates us today about crystal chandeliers? Is it the magic of cut glass reflecting light in all directions? Is the aesthetic of a sparkling object in the middle of a room? Or the yearning for luxury in times that are becoming more cramped and raw? Together with the craft enterprise Dotzauer Kristalleuchten, design:mikimartinek conceives new chandelier forms and provides an inside view of current product developments. A knitted curtain of paper expresses sustainable quality and elegance in everyday life, as do elegant, blown water glasses. Personal presentation and meet and greet with the designer daily at 5 pm. www.mikimartinek.com 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Fri 11am–6.30pm, Sat 11am– 3pm, Sun closed Cocktail: Thu 6.10., 5pm Dotzauer Kristalleuchten 1., Singerstraße 7 9

When patterns become infinite. The versatile Turkish contemporary artist Ardan Özmenoğlu designs Ottoman paper carpets by adding a new look and dimension to its patterns. For this joint art project of Europapier, Viadukt Screen Prints, and the artist herself, Özmenoğlu uses several design papers applying techniques such as screen printing, painting, and cutting. The exhibition sheds new light on the traditional carpets. www.europapier.at 3.10.–9.10., Mon–Fri 4pm– 8pm, Sat+Sun 10am-2pm Cocktail: Mon 3.10., 4pm–8pm Viadukt Screen Prints 6., Gumpendorfer Straße 132 62

The talk in the ewoTalks series revolves around the dramatic changes trawled by the networking of machines, factories, and logistics chains. Talking to other participants, Marcus Fairs (Dezeen) and the designer Clemens Weisshaar address the rapid changes underlying society and industry as well as the potential this triggers on the creative side. The South Tyrolean family concern ewo develops high-quality light systems for public places, and their talk series is devoted to the interactions between art, design, architecture, industry, and technology. PACKAGING DESIGN Fedrigoni

IMPRINT . PORCELAIN VASES feinedinge*

RIMADESIO: STORIES AND MATTERS Grünbeck

IMPRINT consists of three archetypical vase forms of different sizes that can be used both as a set and as single object. Aesthetically, the series is intentionally conceived as plain and simple – subtle gradations of color made of dyed porcelain body meet up with fine, organic surface reliefs. Abstract casts of plants – fig, juniper, and bitter gourd – are reworked as a raised relief for the vases’ outside structures. Matching each of the three vases is a turned cover, which – also without flowers – makes them into decorative design objects. www.feinedinge.at

Through technical innovation and architectural spatial concepts, Rimadesio with designer Giuseppe Bavuso has developed into an international brand. Here, the introduction of successful sliding door systems in 1992 marked an important turning point in the history of the long established Italian firm of the Malberti brothers: The key materials of aluminum and glass were effectively placed in the limelight by deploying subtle combinations of color and materials – such as leather or wood – and new processing techniques. The latest collections are the result of sixty years of technical expertise – and are now on display in the remodeled brand store near Grünbeck. Talk in the presence of Giuseppe Bavuso. www.gruenbeck.co.at

We meet up with packaging everywhere. It accentuates a product’s quality and frequently has a subconscious influence on buying habits. But just looking good is not enough. Gerlinde Gruber and Susanne Lippitsch show us what options exist beyond pure aesthetics. Wener Van Hoeydonck creates the connection to ornamental art and Martha Ploder introduces a graphic perspective. In Jan Cincera, Fedrigoni is also greeting a Czech designer who recently gave a boost to the material of paper with new forms in the newly opened Fedrigoni Showroom in Prague. WALTER KNOLL: CRAFTMANSHIP & DESIGN Grünbeck

4 ROOMS. 4 DESIGNERS. 1 HOTEL. Hotel Altstadt Vienna

50 YEARS MET CHANDELIERS + UFOS J. & L. Lobmeyr

Walter Knoll designs living spaces – with consummate craftsmanship, valuable materials, and an aesthetic of lasting validity. For 150 years, Walter Knoll has been renowned as a furniture brand for modern times, its history originating in 1865 with a leather shop in Stuttgart. The firm continually set standards in design history, created classics, and icons of the avant-garde. Since the end of the twentieth century, the manufacturing concern for upholstered furniture has been growing constantly and today is one of the foremost producers in the international high-end segment of interior furnishings and design. For the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK it will present in Haus Grünbeck design classics from its Classic Edition, Turkish design by Sadi and Neptun Ozis, and new handicrafts by EOOS. www.gruenbeck.co.at

The hotel Altstadt Vienna is renowned for its multifaceted features – its contemporary art collection, the people who live the art of hospitality here, and the great variety of rooms, which all have one thing in common: Viennese joie de vivre! Designed and interpreted by an illustrious bevy of creative thinkers, in autumn 2016 the Altstadt Vienna is now opening four other rooms by four architects and designers: Gregor Eichinger, Adolf Krischanitz, Roland Nemetz and Lilli Hollein. Site inspection of the open rooms with prosecco. www.altstadt.at

At the opening of the Metro politan Opera in New York in 1966, the first burst of applause already erupted before the performance to acclaim twelve ascending chandeliers from Vienna. And in the foyer, too, there was a cascade of “exploding stars”, visible from afar. For Hans Harald Rath, the source of inspiration for the chandeliers – which have a symbolic character today – came from a little book by the architect Wallace K. Harrison showing photos from outer space. Acting as his first model were potatoes spiked with toothpicks hanging up in the hotel kitchen. Fifty years after the Met opening, J. & L. Lobmeyr is putting the largest chandelier group on display ever constructed since then. Also on show: refulgent UFOs with reverberating names like Stanley, Jill, Sigourney, and Orson by the design duo Kim+Heep. www.lobmeyr.at

GREEN DESIGN FOR AND WITH GRÜNE ERDE Johannes Scherr Design

SUPERSCAPE 2016 – FUTURE URBAN LIVING JP architecture perspectives

The eco-pioneer concern Grüne Erde has for more than thirty years been successfully committed to the yearning for a life dominated not by profit but by ecological responsibility, social justice, quality-awareness and sensuousness. What does a design process look like for and with this kind of enterprise? How is the consistent maintenance of this ethos palpable in the product? Johannes Scherr addresses these issues by means of products from the new Grüne Erde Collection, pointing out differences, shared features, reciprocal impetus, and ideas from other design disciplines, which the Viennese bureau has the expertise to exploit. www.johannes-scherr.com www.grueneerde.com

The architecture and design concepts on the short list of the biennial architecture competition Superscape show six visionary approaches to this year’s theme. Here, the task was to question conventional home-living patterns, to venture design experiments, and to find innovative solutions within a time horizon of fifty years for the changing needs of urban residents. The winning project will be selected on October 6. Projects on the short list: “Counternatures. The fusion of digital production with traditional handicraft enables the manufacture of simple and sensuous objects with proactive user integration. A deliberate reference to frugal design visually and haptically supports the applied technology – without placing the objects a priori to the fore, but in order to integrate them discreetly into the respective space. The standard lamp on display combines steel elements made in 3D printing with handcrafted walnut components. The lamp design can be freely configured, using the available materials of steel, ceramic, plastic, wood, aluminum, and brass. www.jsgxid.com www.fabbrica.at 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–2pm, Sun closed Presentation 3D printing process: Thu 6.10., 7pm FABBRICA. 9., Nußdorfer Straße 8 10

NATHALIE DU PASQUIER: BIG OBJECTS NOT ALWAYS SILENT Kunsthalle Wien

LATEST DESIGNS: LIGHTING AND TABLEWARE PROJECTS Lasvit

THE ART OF WEAVING Leitner Leinen

With BIG OBJECTS NOT ALWAYS SILENT, the Kunst halle Wien presents the artist and designer Nathalie Du Pasquier in her first major solo exhibition. The self-taught artist was founding member of the Memphis Group surrounding Ettore Sottsass and is renowned as a luminary on the international design scene. The dialogue-oriented presentation of her gaily-colorful patterns and designs alongside her current œuvre is to an equal extent a visualization of the history of her work’s origins and the connecting lines between design and painting. As part of the series “HiStories/Geschichte(n)”, Du Pasquier talks about her personal influences, predilections, and interests. Curator: Luca Lo Pinto. www.kunsthallewien.at

With its latest products, the young upcoming Czech design enterprise Lasvit is harking back to the great heritage of Bohemian glass production. The collection, realized by leading designers like Moritz Waldemeyer, includes objects from lighting design and tableware design. As if trying to systemize chandelier manufacture, Waldemeyer enlisted the geometric elements of classic illuminants and transposed them into diamond-shaped, hexagonal glass blocks. The basic form of individual components emerged both in single and also in combined lighting bodies as strikingly clear and disciplined in appearance. www.lasvit.com

When tradition becomes trend: In cooperation with Gramath & Windsor Wien, the family concern Leitner Leinen takes the stage with a pop-up store in the district of Neubau and in doing so presents a design from the pen of the Austrian product designer Thomas Feichtner. Leitner Leinen has had its home in the Mühlviertel since 1853 and takes the classic material of linen as a small, exquisite luxury brand along a path into the present day. This is where first-class production methods, promises of uncompromising quality, and the best raw materials encounter international design talents. www.leitnerleinen.com 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Fri 10am–7pm, Sat 10am–5pm, Sun closed Cocktail: Thu 6.10., 7.30 pm AFA Offspace 7., Lindengasse 27 2

WOLF SETTLES DOWN Lia Wolf Cabinett

UNTAMED: A FURNITURE COLLECTION BY SEBASTIAN MENSCHHORN. Liska

DESIGN KIDS: BUILDING YOUR DREAM HOUSE FOR BEGINNERS MAK

The designer Sebastian Menschhorn plays with the archaic, animal atavism of fur – a material that Liska, an inner-city fashion house specialized in quality furs, has always valued greatly for its origins. Made with consummate furrier craftsmanship, Menschhorn’s furniture is morphed half way into animals and from animals back to furniture. Metamorphoses unfold: Streaming manes emerge from table legs, furry animals gallop over cushions, and tabletops are borne by the limbs of hirsute fabulous beasts – UNTAMED. www.liskafashion.com

Whether Tiny House, tree house, or dream house – what does a house require? We consider Frederick Kiesler’s insights and ponder what a house of the future might look like. Guided by an architect, you can develop ideas, draw a floor plan, and realize your own dream house. Workshop for 8- to 12-year-olds. www.mak.at

Lia Wolf’s bookshop has sojourned in a temporary dwelling for two years, the Cabinet out of the Box – plywood crates, closed for book transport and storage, opened for displaying them. Right on time for the tenth VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, Lia Wolf moves house with all her boxes once more – this time, from the bel étage into a vault. Lia Wolf is setting up permanent camp! The books on art, design, architecture, and graphic art are of course picked by hand and individually compiled on request. There’s now more room for book presentations, exhibitions, and more – in summer, in the inner courtyard, in winter, in the reading room and salon. PICNIC Meșteshukar ButiQ

M1 REMIX BY THOMAS EHRENFRIED Neudoerfler Office Systems

After a total of thirty years, architect Adolf Krischanitz is submitting his interiors for the first time to a comprehensive inventory, showing originals, drawing, plans, and photos. His objects – from chair and sofa to table and lamp – are always assigned to a feasible constructional agenda, thus part of a method of spatial organization and management. Over and above this, models for two of his pavilions augment the topic by the concept of urban furniture. The exhibition presents the first catalogue raisonné of Adolf Krischanitz’s entire œuvre of furniture. Curated by Edelbert Köb. www.galerie-mam.com

Permanent movement plays a momentous role in the history of the Roma people. The new product group by Meșteshukar ButiQ harks back to this nomadic tradition, simultaneously demonstrating a cross-section of the Roma people’s centuries-old handicraft skills. So, just as friends meet for a picnic, the PICNIC series represents a meeting place: Works by different craftspeople complement one another, sets can be used themselves alone or in combi nation – individual parts of them even in the household. PICNIC is a cooperation within the ERSTE Foundation for Roma Partnership by Nadja Zerunian and Peter Weisz with Meșteshukar ButiQ. www.mbq.ro

SOCIAL BUSINESS: PROTOTYPES FOR MAGDAS DESIGN New Design University (NDU) St. Pölten

For the third time already, the Neue Wiener Werkstätte is inviting applications for the NWW Design Award. This year’s edition of the award is honoring creative solutions for guestrooms and furnishings. Designs for furnishings and upholstered furniture inspired by the topic of “New Hospitality” can be immediately submitted at www.nww-designaward.org. The old established firm is presenting a special show based on the award and is looking forward as well to a fascinating discourse with the festival public. The show is embedded in the five hundred square meters of the Austrian furniture producer’s exhibition space. Special highlights and a special program can be expected on the Long Day of the Set-up. www.nww.at 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Fri 10am–7pm, Sat 10am–5pm, Sun closed Long Day of the Set-up: Thu 6.10., 10am–9pm Neue Wiener Werkstätte Flagshipstore 1., Schottenring 35 38

How do students of interior architecture imagine life on Mars? The NDU is providing the answer to this question in the form of a walk-in film set, constructed in only three days in a guest project by Joseph Popper and Bernhard Ranner. On a scale of 1:1, the interiors of a (fictional) space habitat, despite being made of the simplest materials, cardboard and paper for instance, allow a short sojourn on a popculture Mars. magdas Design – a new social business run by the Vienna Caritas – invites both designers and NDU students to design small products that can be made in the Caritas workshops in charitable and non-profit employment projects and subsequently offered for sale. Pre-eminent here is not the product and its sale, but the socio-economic context, production conditions, and the people involved. The exhibition sketches the process of development and shows students’ prototypes, many of which are adopted into the magdas Design range. The talk “Design and Social Enterprises” addresses the topic in depth. www.ndu.ac.at 30.9.–9.10., daily 10am–6pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 11am Talk “Design and Social Enterprises”: Fri 7.10., 1pm carla mittersteig 5., Mittersteig 15 6

MAG DES DING Objektas

HIGH-PROFILE DESIGN FROM THE PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB Peugeot

ACC – A CHARACTER’S COAT PRESENTS … Pia Bauernberger

Objects may tell stories of yet unthought ways of working and living. The exhibition MAG DES DING – an allusion to academic title Mag. des. ind. – focuses on a loose collective’s infiltration into the design world – a collective of recent female industrial design graduates. Objects reflecting their individual approaches are juxtaposed with objects by designers they enthused for at a specific stage in their careers. Objects inform the behind-the-scenes, the individual choices, and paths a graduate can take. 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 5pm–8pm Finissage: Sun 9.10., 5pm– 8pm Festival Headquarters

In its more than eighty years of history, the Peugeot brand has always aspired to do justice to its own high standards of high-profile design. In doing so, the in-house Peugeot Design Lab develops solutions for all Peugeot pro ducts – automobiles, bicycles, scooters, pepper mills, and accessories – imparting to them its unique identity and unmistakable image. Design solutions are also available for customers outside the automobile branch. On show are objects from the Peugeot Design Lab and current design highlights of the new Peugeot 3008 – a materialization of pure joy in driving, conceived for aesthetes who are looking for a modern driving experience of an extraordinary kind. www.peugeot.at 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 5pm–8pm Finissage: Sun 9.10., 5pm– 8pm Festival Headquarters

For the project ACC, designer Pia Bauernberger designed nine personalized work coats for creative people on the Vienna art and design scene. Each coat stands for a specific work area of the branch, but at the same time reflects the individual work method of a person, which in conclusion results in a unique product. The products are juxtaposed to nine coats in the group exhibition. ACC presents: mischer’traxler studio, Siegrun Appelt, Nika Kupyrova, Fabienne Feltus, Heirs, Anna Peyrer, and Taiyoung Ha. Curated by Flora PeyrerHeimstätt. www.acharacterscoat.com 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–7pm Cocktail: Tue 4.10., 5pm Alte Post 1., Dominikanerbastei 11 3

OF NATURAL PHENOMENA AND FASCINATING PRECISION Porzellanmanufaktur FÜRSTENBERG / EOOS

VANDASYE, SCHÖNSTAUB AND TERRAZZO PROJECT QWSTION invites

NEW WATCH COLLECTION DESIGNED BY KONSTANTIN GRCIC Rado

In a poetic installation, realized with the fascinating precision of the FÜRSTENBERG porcelain manufactory, the Vienna design studio EOOS and FÜRSTENBERG put analyses of table culture on show that are inspired by natural phenomena such as lava streams and accumulated sediment strata. The place where the matte, fluted exterior surface and the smooth interior surface of the double-walled beakers and bowls meet our lips – this is where the physical experience of the objects is potentially most direct. And it is here that EOOS designer Martin Bergmann also recognizes the essence and the precision of skills. www.fuerstenbergporzellan.com www.eoos.com 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 5pm–8pm Finissage: Sun 9.10., 5pm– 8pm Festival Headquarters

The name is the game. In its new Vienna store the Swiss bag label QWSTION offers young designers a platform – QWSTION invites: On show are objects by the Vienna design bureau Vandasye, also, as premiere, a special edition of tables and carpets by the two Swiss studios Schönstaub and Terrazzo Project. Whereas the versatility of QWSTION’s everyday bags shows the influence of the modernist design tradition. They will be on display in the store together with the equally minimal furniture by the young Berlin label New Tendency and the Artek Collection shaped by Alvar Aalto. www.qwstion.com 30.9.–8.10., Tue–Fri 11am–7pm, Sat 11am–6pm, Sun+Mon closed Cocktail: Mon 3.10. 5.30pm QWSTION invites 7., Zieglergasse 38 40

Design forms the foundation of Rado’s groundbreaking timepieces. For VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2016, Rado is launching its new Ceramica watch in Austria, designed in collaboration with Konstantin Grcic. As part of the festival, the renowned industrial designer will also create an installation in the Rado boutique window. The Rado boutique window will also serve as the starting point of the exclusive Rado guided tours: VIENNA DESIGN WEEK director Lilli Hollein and her team extend an invitation to mini-tours of very personal festival highlights. www.rado.at 30.9.–8.10., Mon–Fri 9.30am–7pm, Sat 9.30am– 6pm, Sun closed Cocktail: Thu 6.10., 6pm–10pm Rado guided tours: Mon 3.10., Tue 4.10., Thu 6.10., 11am–1pm Maximum of ten persons Registration at radotour@ viennadesignweek.at Rado Boutique 1., Kärntner Straße 18 41

TORSTEN NEELAND: PERSPECTIVES Rauminhalt

FRIENDLY ENEMY: JAPANESE KNOTWEED IN THE PAPER LABORATORY Re-generacija

Passion for technologies and materials is the starting point for a bold design collaboration between Swiss watch manufacturer Rado and industrial designer Konstantin Grcic. In Grcic’s new creation, the Rado Ceramica – an oft-copied but never equaled design icon – has been given a contemporary update using high-tech ceramic – all without forfeiting its strong geometrical shape. During VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, Rado is launching this new interpretation of its celebrated wristwatch at the Festival Headquarters, along with insights into its design process and other highlights conceived by the design luminary Konstantin Grcic. www.rado.at

Harald Bichler will be showcasing the work of Londonbased designer Torsten Neeland with an interdisciplinary approach. In collaboration with silversmiths Jarosinski & Vaugoin, the design gallery will be showing new tableware. Additional projects include collaborations with Yohji Yamamoto and the London-based dance company Candoco, exclusive stone objects for Rauminhalt, and a rug. For this special occasion, London-based sound artist Ben Lancaster will compose a new sound composition using fragments of sounds created at the Jarosinski & Vaugoin metal workshop. www.rauminhalt.at

An alien plant, Japanese knotweed ranks among the most invasive species on the planet. In a collaboration with a diverse team of experts, the designers of the Re-generacija collective investigate its potential value as an alternative source of cellulose fibers. The exhibition shows the process of gathering the material, conducting laboratory tests and experiments. The results are presented in a library of materials, prototypes, and products, serving as an invitation for further development and cooperation. And the plant has invaded the drinks menu, too. RE-RE: OVERRIDING DESIGN WITH ART AND VICE-VERSA Romanian Cultural Institute Vienna

FESTIVAL SUNDOWN Ruby Marie Hotel & Bar

ISOCHRONE Schloss Hollenegg for Design / mischer’traxler studio

Overcoming the boundaries of the disciplines – an experiment engaged in by Romanian designers and artists in this exhibition. The results of their projects are in no way contradictory. The overlapping elements testify to a smooth confluence and reveal potentials of re-contextualization. The niche products on display move along the blurred line separating the task areas and bring experiments, new technologies, and utopian design into play. In central focus of RE-RE is the solving of a specific problem, the answering of a personal and occasionally unsettling question. www.rkiwien.at 30.9.–9.10., daily 10am–7pm Cocktail: Fri 30.9., 5pm Romanian Cultural Institute Vienna 4., Argentinierstraße 39 45

An after-show above the roofs of Vienna: During the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the Ruby Marie Hotel & Bar extends an invitation to enjoy a festival sundowner with national and international guests, also cocktails at festival prices and DJ beats in one of the hottest new bars in town. In the Event Space on the ground floor, the vintage elements of the richly historical location also encounter works and products by the young Czech interior designers of deelive. Inspiration in perfection on a Monday evening! www.ruby-hotels.com Mon 3.10., 8pm Ruby Marie Hotel & Bar 7., Kaiserstraße 2–4 44

At the invitation of Schloss Hollenegg, the design studio mischer’traxler have worked on an installation on the theme of “Slow”. They placed a multi-layered tabletop under a large pendulum that in monotonous and continuous movement grinds a bowlshaped dent in the surface, showing up the colored layers of the tabletop. ISOCHRONE endeavors to capture time and continuity in process and object. This has resulted in an object – a hybrid consisting of a flat surface and a bowl – which complements the collection of the untypical and occasionally idiosyncratic objects in the interiors of Schloss Hollenegg. www.schlosshollenegg.at 30.9.–9.10., daily 11am–8pm Cocktail: Sat 1.10., 5pm–8pm Finissage: Sun 9.10., 5pm– 8pm Festival Headquarters

INTO THE WHY Sedici-Verlag

BESPOKE EVENING Seliger

A ramble through the “Da” (the “There”), through rapid publishing and digital mining: The Sedici-Verlag publishing house is opening a reading and idea salon and organizing the congress to research the proclaimed “Daheit” (“Thereness”) the untamed medium of an innovative design method that is still being developed – and celebrating the Idea Beer Bar. The publishing house is a collective of students and teachers at the HyperWerk, Institute for Postindustrial Design HGK FHNW Basel. Jan Knopp (DE/ CH), Michael Tatschl (AT), and Olivier Rossel (CH) take us through the events. www.sedici-verlag.ch

Despite its long tradition, the term “bespoke furnishing” – customized, tailor-made manufacture – is scarcely known in Austria. In an ensemble uniting showrooms, studios, and workshops the remodeled location of the furniture manufacturer Seliger provides an ambience where individual interior design can be experienced on a high international level and its production processes manifested on site. The creative amalgam of traditional craftsmanship and fresh ideas forms the basis of the Seliger Edition, its first four prototypes are being showcased and celebrated in the spectacular house bar. WILLING & ABLE: ACCIDENT / OCCIDENT / ORIENT So Weit, die Zukunft (SWDZ)

THE URBAN FUTURE. THINKING_FORWARD_ Technical Museum Vienna

BOLS D’OR Thomas Feichtner

Everyone has skills that can be passed on – a project for in tercultural knowledge sharing: In the participatory exhibition ACCIDENT / OCCIDENT / ORIENT European and Oriental handicraft techniques, approaches and ornaments are used to create unique design objects out of broken, no longer aesthetically appealing household items and furniture. This is where new techniques and old knowledge can be tried out. Moreover, a pop-up café in the 5th district linked to the exhibition provides a delightful impetus to get to know new people and tastes. The exact location will be announced online. www.so-weit-die-zukunft.at 30.9.–9.10., daily 1pm–7pm

The city is indubitably the human environment of the future. Cities take up only two percent of the globe’s surface but accommodate around half of the world’s population – and by 2050 more than two thirds, even. How do we want to live in these cities in future? As part of the exhibition, the photographic lab Kreta – photo lab and urban lab – invites people between October 6 and 9 to be photographed as city dwellers. Ostensibly plain and reduced to function, the witty design approach of BOLS D’OR first becomes manifest in the detail. So, just as the water surface divides a glass into two halves, parcel gilding effects this in the three receptacles designed by Thomas Feichtner for the silversmith concern of Jarosinski & Vaugoin. A visual irritation that throws the otherwise perfectly uniform bodies of the silver bowls and beakers somewhat out of sync – oblique and asymmetrical, as if dipped in paint. A special feature, only possible through traditional handicraft such as that practiced at silversmiths Jarosinski & Vaugoin. www.thomasfeichtner.com www.vaugoin.com 30.9.–7.10., Mon–Fri 9am– 6pm, Sat+Sun closed Cocktail: Mon 3.10., 5pm–7pm Jarosinski & Vaugoin 7., Zieglergasse 24 23

ROCKING OBJECT MADE OF COMPRESSED WOOD Tina Lehner

PAIRS IN SQUARES Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín

NEW SHOWROOM OPENING AND TALK WITH DESIGNERS TON

In her long years of preoccupation with compressed wood – highly flexible, mechanically treated wooden strips and beams –, the designer Tina Lehner has tested possibilities and limits of manufacturing methods. The outcome is an artistic series of a smallscale piece of furniture – the ROCKING OBJECT. Each piece is a handcrafted oneoff, bearing the designer’s personal touch. The owner of an open work studio – the place of – invites visitors of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK to discover the special technique of compressed wood in her showroom and to bend and shape wooden strips with their own strength. Come and twist. www.tina-design-objects.net www.rockingobject.com

The show of the Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín compiles works by students of the Industrial Design Studio (Faculty of Multimedia Communications). Seeking to link up with the Czech design tradition, the designers made use of materials such as beech wood, glass, and porcelain. Also, the area of usage for the products is typically Czech – for instance local beer types, plum brandy, marinated sausages, and sweet pastries with poppy seeds. But not only the designs, dishes, and drinks form pairs: In a new interpretation of the Czech memory game Pexeso, the exhibits are reproduced in the form of milled porcelain. To win, visitors have to find all the pairs! www.utb.cz

Ton works with the process of manual wood bending in a place that has been a home to this unique technique since 1861. The firm, founded by Michael Thonet, constantly investigates new possibilities and combines them with the ideas of contemporary designers – from Austria Thomas Feichtner, Alexander Gufler, Kai Stania, Harald and Heike Guggenbichler, for example. KINETOMANICS TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology), Department of Three-Dimensional Design

FEAR OF LIFE. THE CITY AS A HABITAT TO ALL University of Applied Arts Vienna

COLLECTION IN PROGRESS Werkraum Bregenzerwald

As synthesis of mechanics, electronics, and software, the kinetic works of the Department of Three-Dimensional Design sounds out the space between architecture, design and art – from 3D printing to bionics and automation. While the “Plantoide” shows the technical interpretation of a vegetal organism, the installation “loop 2” casts a new look at the topic of 3D printing. The “Topokopierer” meanwhile reproduces threedimensional objects as sandcast relief. And, based on milling machine software, the “Light Thing” takes the stage with a choreography of light and color. Exhibition created with the friendly support of TTTech Computertechnik. kunst2.tuwien.ac.at www.tuwien.ac.at

What is wrong with the socalled mainstream of society? Is this a politically right wing term? And what does it stand for in this context anyway? Boundaries are constructed, loyalties are interpreted based on nationality and enemy stereotypes conjured up. Whoever argues in this way exploits fears and prejudice, draws from ignorance, and perverts traditions. The symposium, held mainly in English, takes a stand and shows that if we want to stand up for our freedom today, the only solution is enlightenment and not blind faith. The 90 associate firms of Werkraum Bregenzerwald are working on a joint collection of simple, everyday furniture and utensils. Quality criteria are developed not with methods of conventional market research but together with festival visitors and the design anthropologist Stefan Wolf. A specimen selection is picked out in order to discuss these criteria. Contemporary handicraft from the Bregenz Forest has a world reputation – but is seldom seen in Vienna in a comprehensive form. With the newly opened showroom of moor & moor on the Danube Canal there is now a permanent branch for the “Wälder” home-living culture and lifestyle for the first time in the urban context. Vorarlberg hospitality is demonstrated for the opening of the Feldküche cooking collective. HOW MUCH “DIGITAL” DOES HANDICRAFT NEED? wienerSITZgruppe

CURATED BY_VIENNA 2016: MEINE HERKUNFT HABE ICH MIR SELBST AUSGEDACHT Vienna Business Agency, creative center departure

DESIGN NITE: STADTFABRIK (CITY FACTORY) – INCLUSION MAK / IDRV / Vienna Business Agency, creative center departure

In contrast to the times of the avant-gardes, artistic claims of innovation today are premised less on the cutting-off of lines of tradition but rather on the rediscovery and reinvention of precursors. Based on this premise, Viennese galleries for contemporary art are showing exhibitions conceived by international curators under the title of MEINE HERKUNFT HABE ICH MIR SELBST AUSGEDACHT (MY ORIGINS? I MADE THEM UP). The impetus for the gallery festival is provided by the eponymous essay written by author and cultural critic Diederich Diederichsen. curated by_vienna has been coordinated and financed by the Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure since 2009. www.wirtschaftsagentur.at www.curatedby.at

How can design contribute to maximize the potentials of refugees in terms of integration and jobs? In dealing with the theme of inclusion, the StadtFabrik presents the results of the workshop and research. A shop street by EOOS, part of their contribution to the “Social Furniture Collection” at the Venice Architecture Biennale, is relocated from a Caritas-run asylum quarter into the context of the museum as demonstrator of a cash-free economy for the common good. A Wiener, halal! – an art project and sausage booth combined with halal preparation – is nominated as change maker and can be tested on site. Curated by IDRV.

In its panel discussion the wienerSITZgruppe addresses the critical issue of how intense digital knowledge sharing has to be in tapestry work in the early twenty-first century. Is the training up to date? What will knowledge transfer look like in ten years? The discussion is held between trainees and expertise from practical education and educational science. Also: The public is invited to test things for themselves. Can a craft profession be learnt by means of a video? The wienerSITZgruppe shows how it works. Participants work on a prepared piece and are supported online. The outcome is assessed on request. DWAYNE WAGGONER: LIGHT AND LANGUAGE IN ARCHITECTURE XAL

EXOTIC BIRD zerunianandweisz

GRÜNDEN IN WIEN is the day for start-ups in Vienna, presented by the Vienna Business Agency. Start-up people open their doors and let people have a look behind the scenes. The city becomes the stage for people with innovative and entrepreneurial ideas by joining in walks to different firms, talks on start-up topics and many workshops. New this year: A start-up pitch for students at four Viennese universities and a start-up career fair in Neu Marx. Further information and detailed program online. www.wirtschaftsagentur.at/ gruendeninwien Fri 7.10., 8am–9.30pm Various locations in Vienna

“Light can sometimes be everything, and somehow, sometimes, just nothing at all. I think it’s this ‘nothingingess’, this intangibility of light, that keeps us lighting designers constantly on our toes.” Ever since lighting design became established as an autonomous department, a new language has also developed, its purpose being the categorization and systemizing of our perception of illuminated environments. In his talk, Dwayne Waggoner gives us insights into current practices so as to cast light on current developments and to foster a sharper awareness of quality criteria in lighting design. www.xal.com Wed 5.10., 7pm XAL Showroom 3., Marxergasse 1b 70

The poetic table sets by zerunianandweisz are a subtle interplay of design and handicraft, augmented by an objet trouvé – the eponymous bird. Combined on trays, they are embedded in a narrative context. The stories they tell are open – beautiful, touching, bold, entertaining, sentimental, and frequently comic. The objects were developed together with craftspeople in a traditional Roma copper smith’s in Transylvania and transport observers onto a journey into an undiscovered world.
