The Info Point in the Festival Headquarters North is the number one contact point for visitors. Several guided tours start here. Talks, panels, and lectures take place in the Festival Headquarters South.

Cocktail The cocktail symbol marks selective events during the festival. Don’t worry if you don’t make it to these dates: Most exhibitions and presentations can be viewed throughout the entire festival at the stated opening times.

One and one equals eleven – at least in our case!

Our sporty festival team has transformed for the most part (and, like the more successful teams in these parts, mainly consists of women). Full of energy and with a new office location on Mahlerstraße, we have once again developed a comprehensive festival program – not an easy task, after all the fireworks of our tenth anniversary. So every year has its special challenges: This year we’ve discovered that some Viennese districts develop faster than we can pitch our tents there.

We have taken on Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, the 15th district. It is divided up by the tracks of the Western Railway and extends from the Westbahnhof station to the Technical Museum Vienna, from the Wienzeile to the Schmelz and the Nibelungenviertel.

Accordingly, this year we have set up two central headquarters. Firstly – and at this point we would like to voice our heartfelt thanks to IKEA Austria – we can move into the Blaues Haus near Westbahnhof for the ten days of the festival, where in the coming years an IKEA branch will take shape right in the center of town. So the run-up to becoming a design location is happening even now.

Our Festival Headquarters South on Sparkassaplatz is in any case an architectural icon. In the early 1970s, Johann Georg Gsteu created a branch of the Z-Sparkasse here that is striking for its incredible richness of detail: The new proprietor has kindly given us the keys for a temporary period. Sparkassaplatz will be the hub for our talks. We shall also be showing two special contributions here (one of which in the strongroom!) and some from partners.

But the site is an experience in itself!

Meanwhile the Blaues Haus awaits with a number of exhibitions, in particular those of this year’s Guest Country Romania.

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna has been preparing for this participation with enormous enthusiasm, and we are delighted yet again to introduce an Eastern European country and its design scene that has not yet hit the public eye so much in the design world.

Across the whole city, many institutions, museum, universities, business people, and design studios are enthusiastically joining in the activities. As usual, we are offering tours each with a different thematic orientation, and, with the help of the Festival Guide and our website, we urge you to work out your own personal routes through the City Full of Design.

Our central objective is to show Vienna from its contemporary side, even if the route takes you to old-established workshops or spotlights history.

Innovation and design are inseparable.

Going far beyond what is happening now, design addresses our future, our society, and our environment. It anticipates and reacts to change, or motivates it. And design is at the crossroads at the moment, because the many parameters it works with are changing. So there’s no better point in time to tackle it.

In this spirit, we look forward with the greatest of pleasure to seeing you here with us!

Gerhard Hirczi MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE VIENNA BUSINESS AGENCY Design has many aspects and through its creative ambitions constantly provides scope for cooperation, innovation, and discourse. This year for the eleventh time, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK will put this diversity of opportunity into the spotlight of international attention. As the city’s onthe-spot agency, we see the connection of design with traditional industry as a chance and means on the way towards a smart city. Particularly in an age of increasing digitalization and innovative and intelligent design, projects are emerging at the interface of technology and the creative industries that are increasingly manifesting economic impact and range, and simultaneously making our city a great and ever better place to live. This year at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, we are initiating our ideas competition KINDER, KINDER! NEW DESIGN IDEAS FOR A PLAYFUL CITY and inviting creative people, producers, and manufacturers to venture a change of perspective. From this new vantage point, we hope for fresh impulses for life in a smart city – because a major city that sees itself as a place for children is also a great place for promoting innovation, responsibility, commitment, and success.

Now for the eleventh time, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is making Vienna in autumn into a city of design. In an intensive week, design in all its diversity will be explored and showcased, meanwhile providing a network for designers. More than 100 events offer countless opportunities for design enthusiasts to find their own individual approach to the festival. Openness, diversity, and freedom of scope are the prerequisites for fostering innovations and experiments. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, this annual fixed date for both designers and design enthusiasts, makes space for creating something new, for entering into the current discourse on design, and for developing new examples of cooperation. I would like to congratulate the largest design festival in the country for its continued support of design and its significance both in Austria and on the international scene, and am already looking forward with the greatest of pleasure to the encounter with contemporary design.

For more than ten years now, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has been showing impressively that Vienna stands not only for a rich imperial heritage, but also for contemporary art and modern design. In countless locations throughout the city, the festival illustrates how design influences our everyday life and lifestyle.

With the annual Focus District – this year Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus – it promotes the city’s development and its neighborhoods, taking guests and Viennese alike to fascinating places off the beaten track. In the coming year, Vienna is devoting its annual motto “Beauty and the Abyss” to the achievements of Viennese Modernism and its effects on the present. With matchless diversity, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK graphically demonstrates that creativity, a pioneering spirit, and the innovational thinking of Modernism can be found just as much in the Vienna of today.

Andreas Mailath-Pokorny EXECUTIVE CITY COUNCILLOR FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS, SCIENCE AND SPORTS IN VIENNA Crafts and design are making a comeback.

The city’s production, workplaces, and businesses are enjoying a new boom of appreciation, emphasizing their contribution to creating an unmistakable local identity.

The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has made it its task to bring forgotten places that are off the beaten track of globalized production back into the public eye. In 2017, the focus is on Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus – a district going through a phase of upheaval. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK with its experience in scouting and networking will leave permanent traces here, too – as it has already in the other districts where it stopped off. These discoveries will enhance Vienna’s significance in the minds of the visitors by reconnoitering and reconquering another piece of the city each year.

With this in mind, I wish Lilli Hollein and her team a scintillating festival and look forward with great pleasure to the suspenseful explorations of the 15th district!

Festival Headquarters

Bipartite district, bipartite Festival Headquarters. The 15th district is unique for being divided into two halves. In the north: the more densely populated part, first urbanized in 1850. In the south: the historic part that goes back to the Middle Ages. In between: tracks.

This year, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is responding to this by setting up two Festival Headquarters at once. While the Blaues Haus near Westbahnhof was used quite recently as an emergency refugee quarter and will soon be transformed by IKEA into a sensational architectural entrance gate to the district, the building on Sparkassaplatz was remodeled by Johann Georg Gsteu in the 1970s to act as a branch of the Zentralsparkasse. It now invites visitors to come on board into a jewel of urban architecture with keel-shaped ground plan. True to the dictum: Design connects. Also the 15th district.

The doors of the Festival Headquarters have been opened with the kind support of IKEA (North) and Mauerwerk Immobilien (South).

Pop-up-Café Zweitbester in the Festival Headquarters North in the Blaues Haus

The restaurant in the heart of the Freihausviertel in the 4th district was opened in 2011 by Florian Egger and Vladimir Petrovic. Together with the architecture bureau driendl*architects, they transformed a former café into an elegant, welcoming, and simultaneously brand-new location in Vienna. Creative people from the neighborhood meet here for lunch. In the evening, guests come from all over the city for dinner or an

after-work drink. And on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, the lavish brunch and special atmosphere attract families with children to spend quality leisure time dining and chatting.

The drinks menu is diverse and ingenious, the food menu a masterpiece of versatility. At Zweitbester, special value is placed on the quality and source of the products, also hand- and homemade items. Vienna 15 has been out of the up-andcoming category for a long time now.

Not so long ago, the district was associated with suburbs filled with down-at-heel, mid-to-late nineteenthcentury buildings, worker migration, and street sexworkers, but since the turn of the twenty-first century it has gained undisputedly in attractiveness.

At the same time, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus is today symbolic of a new sense of belonging within a neighborhood.

Besides the Nibelungenviertel in the north, a new creative zone is evolving especially in the meandering streets and alleys of the district’s center in the south, which reaches back to the Middle Ages, for instance round around Reindorfgasse and Schwendermarkt.

For ten whole days, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK will be opening up the urban curtain and setting the stage with new spaces here, supporting long-established businesses and showcasing all the facets of the dual district divided by the Western Railway.

Salut, România! With its changing focus, year after year the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK gives us richly detailed insights into the creativity of another European country. The spotlight onto Eastern Europe this year illuminates a multifaceted landscape – both in topography and in design! Whether crafts produced in the rural Danube delta or the dynamic design scene in the urban centers of București, Timișoara, and Sibiu – design in blue, yellow, and red is represented this autumn across the board of all festival formats. For example, with the Polytechnic University of Timișoara, the Romanian Design Week, and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna.

And on top of these, the projects of the Stadtarbeit will be thrillingly flanked by outstanding Romanian design. So, all we can say is: Hello Romania! Wow!

Let’s talk about it! The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK talks about various aspects of design in lectures and panel discussions: Under the spotlight are strategies of urban development and artistic ventures between Berlin and Vienna, likewise the eye-opening local color of the 15th district and the driving creative forces in the neighborhood. In contrast, a special university talk with international guests revolves around academic education. Special guest this year is Romania – its creative profile is the subject of a further talk. Moreover, national identity as visual message is shifted into focus on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the republic in 2018 and the prospective National Council election. On top of all this, many other options for knowledge sharing, discussion, and reflection are to be had throughout the entire festival program.

With its curated formats Debut, Passionswege, Stadtarbeit, Studio Illustration, and Special, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has taken on the task of creating a new awareness for design. The intention is not merely to shift its aesthetic function into focus, but above all to accentuate those aspects that make design into a central part of our daily life. Thanks to their different approaches, each format created by the team of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK illuminates and presents yet another aspect of this kind.

All eyes on new design! With the Debut format the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is highlighting a selection of outstanding educational institutions from home and abroad.

At the same time, the format is an international networking platform and independent arena for upand-coming design. For example, the Werkraum Bregenzerwald in a remarkable cooperative venture is bringing the renowned Royal College of Art (RCA) London to Vienna and meeting up here with the Polytechnic University of Timișoara from this year’s Guest Country Romania. The works on display exemplify the living design culture of a new generation and span an arc from product design and crafts to architecture and urban planning. Debut, the stage is all yours!

Passionswege

Design connects. Especially in the case of the Passionswege. Ever since they were introduced, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has been connecting international and Austrian designers with Viennese production companies in the context of this curated format.

In open work processes and free from the commercial constraints of conventional work relationships, designers and businesses experiment, create, and share knowledge. The financial framework is established by the festival. Starting out from two stations in the inner city, the format makes its way via a stop-off in the 6th district into the Focus District of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. The results of each cooperative venture – objects or installations – are shown directly on site in what are frequently authentic Viennese workshops and business premises. Passionswege – in the eleventh year, too, this means: discovering the city’s manufacturing culture in tandem.

DISCOVER DESIGN THAT LASTS FOREVER. BE AHEAD OF YOUR TIME

Viennese Modernism and its Design Stars Vienna was a design city even 100 years ago.

The Wiener Werkstätte (1903–1932) and its masterminds conquered the world from here.

First and foremost Koloman Moser (1868–1918), co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. He designed practically everything that could be designed at the time: wallpaper, books, stainedglass windows, stationery, furniture, silver hollowware, posters, etc. The Wiener Werkstätte logo, which he designed, was the first modern logo ever. Moser was a graphic and product designer. He developed corporate designs even before the term had been invented.

J. & L. Lobmeyr, the silversmiths of Jarosinski & Vaugoin, and the Wiener Silber Manufactur still work with historic designs and interpret them anew. Comprehensive collections of historic Wiener Werkstätte pieces can be seen in the MAK and the Leopold Museum.

The Wiener Werkstätte was already history by 1932. But the enterprise and the designs still exist in part today: The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten, the glassware specialist

2018 marks the centenary of Koloman Moser’s birth. The same year saw the deaths of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Otto Wagner. All of them key personalities of Viennese Modernism, which we are celebrating in 2018 – with numerous exhibitions and special guided tours.

Stadtarbeit

Stadtarbeit means togetherness.

Design in general makes our world more beautiful and worth living. Social design in particular addresses social challenges and issues, and analyzes these themes over and above aesthetic and functional interpretations. It promotes knowledge sharing and makes demands on its public. Via an open call, a specialist jury picked five projects that reveal outstanding creative quality in their potential for society. Intensive and unconventional in their form of presentation, they show how design reaps results in the lives we live together every day. The projects are realized in part in cooperation with Caritas. The Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Design Award is being presented this year for the third time.

Studio Illustration

The experiment kicks off on the evening of the opening. All visitors are given tags at the entrance, which are then pinned on ten empty posters.

On each of the following festival days, designers from Austria, the Guest Country Romania, and Germany create an illustration based on these tags. Their inspiration: the three most unusual tags under their name. Their workplace: the freely accessible studio in the Festival Headquarters.

For ten days, visitors can peep over the shoulders of the working artists and follow the creative process. At the same time, more and more finished posters adorn the walls. A growing gallery! What tags were allotted to whom? What terms did the visitors combine? And how did the illustrators react to them? There will be a fitting finissage to celebrate it all on day number ten.

Special is whatever rethinks the concept of design. In this case: persons, works, and approaches.

Special aims to be what the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK team – named VIENNA DESIGN OFFICE throughout the year – wants to achieve as communicator, ambassador, organizer, promoter, communicator, and advisor for the transnational awareness of Austrian design. The Special format showcases a cross section of these activities in self-initiated focal program features: While Vandasye casts light on the appreciation of commercial design by choosing a selection of contemporary Austrian product designs, the Oscarnominated filmmaker Virgil Widrich extends an invitation to a sumptuous light installation in the strongroom vault of the Festival Headquarters South, where Siegrun Appelt also makes an appearance. During a studio visit, the RRRIOT Festival talks about the working and living realities of female artists.

Sharing is caring! The project TISCHLEIN DECK DICH addresses cultural differences and the connecting aspects of a communal meal. It revolves around the sharing of food as a common good. During the festival, the project stops off along with mobile cooking unit and table at various locations in this year’s Focus District and invites refugees and locals to live out their respective culinary culture. Making the start is the team from the 2017 Guest Country itself. As the diverse gastronomic program runs its course, spontaneous get-togethers make residents and passers-by familiar with different cultures. The mobile cooking unit functions as a collection point for food donations and kitchen utensils. These are used during the festival and given to refugee quarters when it’s over. Aesthetic sensibility was laid in the cradle with the two sisters Guillane and Gwendolyn Kerschbaumer. Design and art surrounded them already in their family homes in Innsbruck and Frankfurt – their mother was also a designer. Their common interest in elegant design remote from ephemeral trends still links the two sisters today. The fact that they have been designing and merchandising lamps under the name of Atelier Areti since 2008 was not their intention, explains Gwendolyn Kerschbaumer.

But more scope is offered to artistic freedom in lighting than in furniture – and they would classify their works as closer to art than product design.

In the WIENER WERKSTÄTTE series the artist Caroline Heider reproduces and adapts fashion photos from the twenties that the Wiener Werkstätte once commissioned from Dora Kallmus, alias Madame d’Ora, and Arthur Benda.

Heider intervenes in the picture arrangement by subtracting parts of the photocopy from the field of view and cutting through individual sections of the printed rice paper, then reassembling them in a new arrangement. The total picture takes shape only with the help of the missing part of the original view. The artist also used Wiener Werkstätte motifs from the MAK archive for designing the exhibition space with potato printing. Vacant premises as betting office: ADMIRABEL is a mobile betting performance that encourages people to place bets with alternative stakes – neither money nor goods. Each bet is based on the participant‘s skills and life stories. The keystones to a successful bet are value and exchange value of the stakes that have to be negotiated. Behind every bet lies hope for a better future. This longing aims at overcoming the ordinary. ADMIRABEL uses this mechanism of aspiration in an art initiative to support people in getting in touch and to stimulate social change. The first alternative bets can be placed as part of the opening cocktail on 30.9.

The mystery prize: an ADMIRABEL special. On 5.10. experts discuss the topics of betting, gambling, and the places where they take place. LEBENSWELTEN is part of the artistic research project Dementia. Arts. Society. – D.A.S. Through design and art, the project offers new approaches to the topic of dementia and, with different participatory workshops and interactions in the public space, raises public awareness for the life worlds of people with dementia. Synergies and connections between people with and without dementia are tracked and empathy is aroused to find a language of understanding and coexistence.

With the help of design objects and unconventional communication strategies, new approaches to the topic of dementia can be experienced by participants. The Schwendermarkt is taking shape. That is, geometric shapes, which are affixed as part of the DRAWING PUBLIC SPACE project, or, more precisely: Using colored tapes, a largescale pattern of graphic symbols is being created in the center of the Focus District Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Lines, tiles, and paths are designed to motivate people to roam through the public space and to join in spontaneous interaction in the district.

After the kick-off presentation at Improper Walls, the architecture and research platform ECÒL extends an invitation to take part in various workshops at the neighboring Schwendermarkt.

Local residents, passers-by, visitors, and students from Vienna and Italy explore the area together and dream up designs, drawings, and concepts. The objective is to bring the local neighborhood a little closer together by changing the cityscape. THE ORNAMENT IN THE DIGITAL AGE Fedrigoni / TU Graz, Institute of Architecture and Media What is an ornament? A teaching event directed by Milena Stavric and Florian Schober at the TU Graz focuses on different variations and various representational options of ornament. Students developed individual cut, bent, engraved, and grid variants that form an ensemble as ornamental groups. Fascinated by the post-factual age, in which the borders between truth and lies are blurred, in which populism dominates politics and pales the contours of our communal reality, the exhibition’s theme is our relationship to reality.

Gigodesign, Slovenia’s leading design agency, professes the philosophy that design is not based simply on magic or inspiration but is above all a method of solving problems – a method that at the end of the day aims to make all our lives better. The presentation as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK demonstrates that responsibility and the process are capable of providing the impulse for user-relevant innovations – which is Gigodesign’s ideal. Shaping plaster cast molds by hand is an old, traditional technique usually applied in the classical production of stucco.

Starting out from floral basic elements, the Vienna manufactory feinedinge* used this very method to create bowl sets, which each consist of five different sizes and can be stacked into one another. The challenge of this experimental form finding process lies in transposing the cast forms into practical, well functioning products. From salad to noodle bowl or small side bowl – all items are cast of wafer-thin, polychrome Limoges porcelain in ravishing nuances of color.

Robert Comploj is a master of glass art. He learned his craft from the world’s greatest: the glass blowers of Murano.

Afterwards, he ventured out to spend his learning and wandering years in North America and Denmark. In 2013, he opened Glashütte Comploj in Traun, Upper Austria. It is both an exhibition workshop and a gallery.

Upon returning to his native Austria, he revolutionized the local glass blowing scene – making a name for himself on the way by introducing new techniques and colors, experimenting with the form and structure of glass and bringing his punk-style approach to the craft. Furniture design based on wishful thinking! As part of the participatory exhibition WISHFUL FURNITURE, the Viennese furniture manufacturer Glein invites festival visitors to sketch ideas for furniture designs. Desk, loft bed, shoe shelves, children’s chair, or dumb waiter – there are no limits to the imagination. As the festival proceeds, more and more postcards adorn the walls of the new showroom in the 7th district.

At the end of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the three most interesting designs will be selected and awarded.

And furthermore, the winning design will be technically processed and produced. The winner gets the finished piece of furniture delivered to his or her home. When planning a new hotel, Florian Weitzer doesn’t rely on copy and paste but on an autonomous identity that he continues to address through lateral rethinking. In the Grand Ferdinand opened at the end of 2015, the objective is timeless aesthetic elegance covering everything from interior design to gastronomy – including fascinating reminiscences of the building’s history on Ringstraße.

RE-TRACING HOME Guerilla Architects (DE)

In the context of the refugee crisis, the international collective Guerilla Architects joined forces with migrants, the Caritas, future.lab, Architecture for Refugees, and Communication for Development to develop experimental alternatives to today’s normal refugee architecture. In a two-phase interactive workshop the project RE-TRACING HOME examines the meaning of the term home and studies how we can transfer skills and sociocultural backgrounds of refugees into the architecture and planning of alternative types of dwellings. Workshops will take place in the Blaues Haus, exhibition of the subsequent results with post-party in the mobile lab OPENmarx (3., Karl-FarkasGasse 1). In the second half of the festival, the results of the encounters flow into a participatory building workshop in search of the “ideal” home – always open to the public. As dynamic platform for contemporary and traditional design, Hg5, a new business with its premises in the Palais Wilczek, invites young designers to showcase themselves in temporary settings – among them Lucretia Schmidt, who is based in London and creates sculptural renderings of famous paintings and miniatures in limited editions. Schmidt uses modern molding and casting processes as well as classical painting methods, which she learned at Madame Tussauds. As part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, she provides intimate insights into different work processes. For the 100th anniversary of the birth of Egon Schiele in 2018, she is transposing his paintings into three-dimensional sculptures. www.hg5.at

An installation by Sebastian Menschhorn on the exhibition “300 Years of Maria Theresa”: As an eighteenth-century person, Maria Theresa adored everything Oriental and Far Eastern.

Her epoch adorned its interiors with lacquered and porcelain objects to conjure up a carefree, faraway land. The designer Sebastian Menschhorn plays with elements and principles of the Rococo style: exotic fantasies, the dissolution of conceptual and physical borders, amorphous forms, hedonism and intimacy. Through his prospects and inside views, he creates a private microcosm in which faraway and near fuse in the viewer’s perception. In cooperation with the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten, Kohlmaier, and J. & L. Lobmeyr. Short guided tours with curator Elfriede Iby. The Hotel Altstadt Vienna is renowned for its multifaceted features – its contemporary art collection, the people who live the art of hospitality here, and the great variety of rooms, which all have one thing in common: Viennese joie de vivre! The latter was organized and interpreted by an illustrious bevy of creative thinkers. After the construction site party last year now four new rooms – designed by Gregor Eichinger, Adolf Krischanitz, Roland Nemetz, and Lilli Hollein – are being presented as part of the festival: While the creative people tell of their brainstorming for ideas and the evolution of their rooms in video interviews, representatives of the respective architecture bureaus tour the rooms with small groups of visitors.

After more than 100 new designs, it’s time to take stock. Andreas, Leonid, and Johannes Rath who in the sixth generation head the firm of J. & L. Lobmeyr established since 1823, are presenting an exhibition and a book published

For around 200 years now, the old-established firm of J. & L. Lobmeyr in Vienna has been writing history in glass. Operating today in the sixth generation as a family business, it has always worked to make the secrets of the material accessible and in constant dialogue with craftspeople, designers, and customers to produce innovations. Thus, the Dutch designer Jólan van der Wiel is also delving deep into the vast company archive of J. & L. Lobmeyr for his Passionswege project. Just like the Viennese glass manufactory, the multidisciplinary designer – who studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie – accords great significance to the processed material. In addition, he often infuses playful aspects of natural phenomena into his designs. The result of his cooperative venture with J. & L. Program Partners Work in progress ORNAMENT SMITHIES Karak Creative workshop becomes temporary fabric and fashion smithy. In the facilities of die ProtoTypen, different fabrics are printed with ornaments from the Karak tile factory in Vorarlberg and then processed by the Viennese fashion label meshit. The one-offs produced in this ephemeral process are subsequently exhibited and put on sale. Chance is given plenty of scope in the process. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK visitors are warmly invited to print fabrics or clothing they have brought with them. Horn is a fascinating natural material used for producing highquality everyday objects – combs, buttons, shoehorns, jewelry, and so on. Thomas Petz, who heads the manufactory of the same name founded in 1862, took the firm over from his grandparents. He learned his craft from his grandfather, the last master of the Viennese guild of horn producers. At her visit to the idyllically situated manufactory, the Austrian designer Katharina Eisenköck was thrilled by the traditional work method, the original tools, the aroma of warm horn, the magically sparkling horn dust. The designer, based in London, studied at the famous Camberwell College of Arts and works as a freelance furniture and product designer. Her experimental handling of the horn manifests in various ways the unique haptic and occasionally crude natural material. She traces the individual phases of development in making a traditional comb – slitting, the final pressing and shaping, then polishing. Lightness, transparency, and richly faceted colors become the star players in the show producing these minimalist, luminous objects.

But how can the natural wood structure become visible and tangible by brushing without having to smooth the material? Equipped with a SolCube designed by the Austrian industrial design studio Valentinitsch Design, the British company’s luxurious housings demonstrate how an empty space can be transformed in a flash into a comfortable home – anywhere you want. Two MAK Design Kids workshops for eight- to twelve-yearolds (without accompanying persons). The 30.9. has the motto “Hello, Rattling Robots!”. In the current exhibition HELLO, ROBOT., children get to know the robot species in all their forms, meanwhile exploring the meaning of artificial intelligence and algorithms.

Afterwards, they build their own simple robot: They give him his individual appearance, and then the so-called Fizzbit shakes and rocks him and sets him into motion. On 7.10. it’s time for “Film Away!”. For several years, Rolf Sachs has been focusing in his works on language and speech and the objects of his cultural origins that touch him and reflect his ideas about freedom and openness. A sound installation has been produced for the MAK Design Nite using Sachs’s key words as stimulus for associations. Is this “verbal discourse” able to stimulate emotions that transport us to meditative introspection? Rolf Sachs, born in Lausanne in 1955, is well known for a conceptional approach applied to many different disciplines – photography, sculpture, installation, also architectural projects and stage sets.

Linz meets Mühlviertel in Vienna: For many years, the Linz design duo MARCH GUT has been working together with Tischlerei Pühringer from Böhmdorf. The old-established craft company has already invested its elaborate craftsmanship into executing some of the innovative designs

The Passionswege unite Viennese manufacturing firms with international designers – an experience which in this case literally welds them together. With more than sixty years’ experience, the coppersmith firm of Hegenbart has been the top address for all welding works. No processing methods or materials are foreign to the old-established firm, which master coppersmith Roman Hegenbart now heads in the fourth generation. The Munich designer Matthias Lehner has been running his own studio since 2011. His special trademark is to lend a clear style to his products. Table culture takes up an important place in his work.

Launching out from the application potential of copper in tableware design, as part of the Passionswege he produced a service consisting of carafe, tray, and beakers, whose finely hammered, naturally oxidized copper patches tempt everyone to touch them. A ViennaMunich mixture, ennobled by the blow of the hammer!

The design duo zerunianandweisz has accompanied Meșteshukar ButiQ (MBQ) since the very beginning: Nadja Zerunian and Peter Weisz discuss, draw, forge ideas. They sit side by side with the Roma craftspeople who are supported by the initiative – whether in the bone-chilling cold of the Transylvanian winter, or the baking heat of the summer: “We’re on the spot when the objects take shape in minutely detailed handicraft. They look at us, talk to us, follow us. The Saint Charles Apotheke in Vienna isn’t a pharmacy in the conventional sense. Here, you can find not only registered orthodox medicaments, but also traditional European medicines and self-mixed natural cosmetics. There is a coherent philosophy behind this: “The herbs we find on our doorstep, we can make into medicinal remedies, use them as effective agents in cosmetics, or eat them,” says Alexander Ehrmann, who runs the pharmacy in the sixth generation and shared his knowledge as part of the Passionswege with members of pavillon_35. In their project, Günter Seyfried, Kristin Weissenberger, and Moya Hoke, members of this society for science-based art, focus on the therapeutic aspects of the forest, or, better said, the quintessence of the forest, of the noble ritual of smoking and steaming, pausing and lingering. The project’s objective is to create awareness that something new can be born of science in association with art and design – at present a fundamental trend in design. As part of this year’s VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Cathal Loughnane is coming to Vienna to present some insights into the work of the multidisciplinary, in-house design forge: The fortyyear-old Irishman has been working since 1999 in different departments of the Groupe PSA, today he heads the famed Peugeot Design Lab. In his talk, he describes the power of the Peugeot brand, the work methods of the lab, and the significance of excellent industrial design for successful products in the field of automotive design. DESIGN FOR THE SENSES gathers together diploma projects from the School of Form in Poznań, which, despite belonging to different genres – Domestic Design, Communication Design, Industrial Design, and Fashion Design – share a concise thematic approach: All the selected graduates’ works from the years 2015 to 2017 focus on the human body as center of experiences, emotions, and our knowledge of the world. And although the projects concentrate primarily on aspects of feeling and perceiving, they still demonstrate formal, functional, and utilitarian qualities. What is architecture? How is it regarded, understood, and managed today? A special role in this fundamental discussion is played by élite institutions, which as symbolic answering machines take their approach from different angles: They communicate clear messages, constantly accumulate new answers, and connect people and ideas. But what exactly is being communicated here? How do studies influence individual approaches? Where, ultimately, is it taking us? And who is being brought into connection with whom? The exhibition THE ANSWERING MACHINE of the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning of the Polytechnic University of Timișoara is taking a look at the design and relevance of the Alma Mater as answering machine.

With the aim of thrusting open doors to new university and cultural thinking spaces, students search for answers in the run-up to the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK – during the festival, they will aspire to give them shape in the context of a laboratory-type arrangement, developed in part in collaboration with Romanian architects living in Vienna.

Program Partners Presentation A QUESTION OF CONTEXT QWSTION Store / ECAL A good answer is the outcome of the right question. With the objective of developing sustainable solutions, the Swiss label QWSTION creates bags for daily use, whereby the brand’s core agenda always involves challenging the norm and playfully integrating the latest materials. In a cooperative venture with the ECAL – University of Art and Design Lausanne, students start out with the ultra-light, organically produced material CottonShell® for instance to investigate new options for wearing things. Under creative director Christian Paul Kaegi, they produced prototypes out of the material, which because of its unique texture is impermeable to water and functions without any extra waterproofing. To strike up the start of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, during the opening ceremony the Swiss watch brand Rado reveals the winner of the Rado Star Prize Austria 2017 design contest. From January to August, upcoming Austrian talents were invited to showcase installations in the shop window of the Rado Boutique.

The most innovative design project now receives 5.000 euros as prize money and can dazzle the town during the festival week in the Rado Boutique in Vienna. During the exhibition, Rado, in collaboration with famous designers, is in addition launching an exclusive series of chronometers in limited editions – first and foremost the Rado True Stratum, which was created in cooperation with the Austrian designer Rainer Mutsch. www.rado.com

The Swiss watch brand Rado got together with leading names from the world of design (such as Oskar Zięta and BIG-GAME) – with resounding success. As part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the brand is presenting an exclusive series of chronometers in limited editions, for which the famous designers each left their own individual stamp on the popular Rado True.

One that stands out especially is the Rado True Stratum created in collaboration with the leading Austrian designer Rainer Mutsch. As part of a studio visit, the artist Veronika Burger is showing her video installation EVEN WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT, which deals with the biography of the Viennese lamp designer Elisabeth Kemeter. Kemeter learned her trade from her aunt and was to hand on her knowledge later to her daughter. For thirty years, she made lampshades for Viennese interior design firms and created designs for the 1987 James Bond film “The Living Daylights”. Katharina Brandl (RRRIOT Festival) discusses with Veronika Burger and Elisabeth Kemeter a cross-generational line of women who – then as now – are denied publicity.

THREADS OF TRADITION is based on multidisciplinary works of 2016 and 2017 that allude to folkloric traditions and patterns and are notable for their intensive reliance on process, for their appreciation of traditional knowledge, and a pronounced devotion to material. Whether formal or conceptual – the participating designers use tradition for inspiration, relate to the collective past as a nation, or invoke handicraft techniques that are set in new economic and social contexts. The projects on display focus almost exclusively on the production of contemporary wares with local resources by integrating regional communities and their skills and knowledge. The exhibition DESIGNING CRAFT, CRAFTING DESIGN explores the collaborative relationship between craftsperson and designer. Under the guidance of the design collective diaméter, students of the Royal College of Art (RCA) London have been urged to reflect upon their position as designers in an urban context as well as in relation to and in contrast with the practices of their collaborators at Werkraum Bregenzerwald, who preserve certain working traditions within a regional craft community. The intersection of these young designers and master craftspeople is told through a journey-led exhibition, depicted through three thematic stages: material culture of Bregenzerwald, visibility and invisibility of craft, and re-contextualizing and reimagining materials and practices. Acting as research laboratory were the workshops of Felder Metall, Mohr Polster, Tischlerei Bereuter, Oberhauser & Schedler Bau, Strolz Leuchten, and Schwarzmann, das Fenster.

Color and light are fundamental components of architecture.

They are capable of setting the scene in a richly faceted way with spatial and architectural solutions. Not the least of their properties is also that of being able to stimulate different modes of perception.

In a former second-hand shop with connected studio on Rotenlöwengasse, the international Italian architecture and interior architecture studio RWA_Architetti (Ruffo Wolf and partners) is showing a selection of radiantly colorful and black-and-white projects: The show includes designs of a new Milan showroom and the ceremonial hall of the university in Rovereto. Metamorphosis means development and change. It is the process of a complete organism or specific parts, a continuous transformation capable of taking place without a clearly defined beginning or foreseeable end. Objects, habits, cultures, moral attitudes – all these change in small stages, driven by external forces. New things unfold. SONIC RUG is the result of an artistic approach to smart textiles. The project explores the possibilities of connecting soft material to the digital space, manifesting in an interactive installation: A basic frequency can be triggered, amplified, and distorted by touching different parts on the surface.

The fluffy texture, operating as a sensor, is connected to a program – elongated and repeated sounds are created, wandering from harmonic variations to clusters and distortions, tunes are cumulating into a blast of noise. Starting out from the project Langsames Licht / Slow Light in the Wachau region, for which the artist produced a chandelier in 2015, Siegrun Appelt has made other objects in Czech glassworks in the glassmaking region of North Bohemia. In 2016, Appelt worked for instance with OLED technology, leading its planar light through soberly cut glass blocks. The latest objects are a mixture of vase, lamp, and artifact. All pieces are elaborately fashioned and consist of thick glass, which because of its special cuts has a specific reflection characteristic. Since 2009, it has been a showroom for design chairs and at the same time a platform for social integration – and makes seating options into places of encounter, even in the public space. At this interface of private and communal, old and new, and also fired by her interest in design chairs, the artist and businesswoman Sabine Heine has now developed a series of one-offs: 1+1=1 are new designs consisting of two used chairs or stools which with appropriate joins become a bench. The Czech performer Jan Jakubal demonstrates by means of the design objects that sitting does not automatically mean inertia, but can also be top-speed locomotion. This originated in the idea of supporting farmers in emerging markets with small tractors. Central component of the project is the transport and work vehicle CH4PA. It is a prime example of how sustainable innovation can function: Spirit Design is working in a pilot region together with the largest hydroelectric power station in the world (Itaipú), the TU Wien, and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna on a system innovation that makes local smallholding farmers into fuel suppliers by processing manure and waste from agriculture. This reduces fuel costs by 50 percent and CO2 emissions by 97 percent.

WITH HAND AND HEART: IKAT DYEING WITH VEGETABLE DYES TISCA

How do we want to live in the future? How do we want to organize our cities? And to whom will the city belong? As part of the exhibition THE URBAN FUTURE, the Technical Museum Vienna is showing projects that aim to rethink the city. What new forms of housing make urban densification not only bearable but also offer a better quality of life? How does the city grow with the great diversity of people and continue developing? In a workshop, Sibylle Bader (Wanderklasse) tackles the topics of urban design (planning). The Stadtarbeit project TISCHLEIN DECK DICH and Community Cooking (Caritas) offer people the chance of cooking together and sharing knowledge. The architect Anna Popelka (PPAG architects) talks about new forms of home living and densification in the urban space and along with the curator Elisabeth Limbeck-Lilienau acts as guide through the exhibition. www.technischesmuseum.at

Since 1963, the Vorarlberg firm of TISCA has stood for the production of high-quality woolen carpets and the combination of tradition and innovation. Together with the Swedish designer Anneli Tegelberg and basing its approach on the first GOTS certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) carpet collection in the world, the company makes new patterns using the Ikat production process, where the thread is dyed in sections before weaving, with the German designer Elke Fiebig adding her expertise on ecological dyeing using vegetable dyes. This knowledge sharing is offered by TISCA and the designers as part of a temporary Ikat and dyeing workshop during the festival. The Department of ThreeDimensional Design and Model Building in the TU Wien deals among other subjects with product design at the interface of architecture and art. In the 2017 summer semester, students turned their attention to the creative and constructional potential of self-forming processes and the material of wood.

The outcome materialized as body-supporting objects made of bent wood elements, which in their material- and processing-related forms radiate a buoyant and natural aesthetic aura. The program was supported by Walter Klasz of the University of Innsbruck, who is doing research in the field of active bending. The new online configurator of the Swiss furniture manufacturer USM makes it possible to assemble sideboards, shelves, or other pieces of furniture with a few clicks and entirely according to individual wishes. From South Africa to Japan – a dialogue-based group show explores two vastly separated worlds by articulating rarely told life stories of textiles, objects, and symbols. While African design is in part based on a specific kind of “primitivism” giving the designer the scope to transpose reality into abstract forms and patterns, Japanese design is founded on a pronounced form of sensibility with which objects are assembled in a frequently sensitive and fully deliberate manner. National identity is a signal communicated via banknotes, fire brigade vehicles, and uniforms.

Nation branding deliberately processes the nation’s image. And there are specific symbols for democracy. For the 100th anniversary of the Austrian republic in 2018 and the upcoming National Council election, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK interviews experts about the origin and transformation of the image of Austria and the subtexts reverberating in the background.

Democratic awareness as a task for design. In an introduction to the talk, Jakob Zerbes presents his current diploma project “GAIA – The Artificial Intelligence to Substitute Our Political System”: What does the rapid development of computer performance, artificial intelligence, and big data signify for our society? And how does it question the way we live together? A project from the Institute of Graphic Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

New territories always mean new challenges and chances. This is true of upcoming designers as much as of the institutions where they are trained in the hope of becoming such. In times of an ever-broadening concept of design, both sides are often faced with the same questions: specialization or universal education? Humanities-based erudition or hands-on skills? Academic freedom or confrontation with economic realities? Many design universities are long-time partners of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. Taking this as an occasion, an international panel addresses the question of how universities wish to position themselves in a design landscape transformed by digitalization, open design, and new work. Design made in Romania! This year’s Guest Country of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is Romania. Alongside the key themes, the regional focus is reflected particularly in the presence of many Romanian designers, who are represented in very diverse ways across the board of all festival formats. A welcome situation, which also links up with current developments in and around the urban centers of Romania. The Romanian Design Week was held for the fifth time already in 2017 and attracts designers from all over the country.

And international networking is being boosted as well, as seen in the example of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna. At the same time, young designers are working to support the special features of Romanian design. In this talk in English, representatives describe their view of the flourishing Romanian design scene.

Between hot spot and focus, gentrification and ghettoization, between district festival and neighborhood branding: How do urban districts work on their image to manage the transition from workers’ district to creative hub? How do they exploit the public space? And how far do they need a critical confrontation with the creative industries in interaction with the real estate branch? Based on the study “Beyond Gentrification”, which also sheds light on this year’s Focus District of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, this talk addresses the development of the 15th district, which is, according to the study, deemed to be the least educated and the one with the lowest incomes, but also the youngest and ethnically most diverse urban district in the city.

Every person is different. And every person can profit from someone else. This tour revolves around projects of the Passionswege and Stadtarbeit formats in the Focus District of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. It ranges from copper and horn to social diversity and playfully creative solution models, intimate workshops, vacant business premises, and public squares – a charged field of polarities generating synergies, affirmation, and empathy. The spectrum is broad: culinary diversity, new forms of communication with dementia patients, or the consideration of skills, and sociocultural backgrounds in designing accommodation for migrants. The leitmotif of the tour is the invaluable commodity of affirmative communication with one another, from which everyone, man, woman and child, can profit.

With its crowning dome, its façade studded with striking bull’s eyes, the building on Sparkassaplatz 4 erected during the time of industrial expansion in Austria takes on a notable position in the history of urban development. The two bottom floor levels of the building – formerly headquarters of the Kommunalsparkasse Rudolfsheim founded in 1881 – were remodeled between 1970 and 1974 after the plans of Johann Georg Gsteu into a branch of the then Zentralsparkasse. Johann Georg Gsteu belongs to the formative generation for Austrian post-war architecture surrounding Friedrich Achleitner, Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, Gustav Peichl, and Johannes Spalt. Characteristic of Gsteu’s oeuvre is a constructivist conceptional approach with which he always strives to use technologically innovative constructions not as an end in themselves, but to create a proportional relationship between function, form, and content. For the opening of the building as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, his daughter Corona Gsteu, freelance artist, curator, and architecture expert, acts as guide in an exclusive tour through this architectural jewel in the 15th district. A rare opportunity!

Old handicrafts and young design ideas, almost forgotten manufacturing techniques and new business ideas, tradition and innovation – the range of this tour through Vienna’s inner city is huge: On their tour of discovery, participants visit projects as part of the Passionswege – cooperative ventures between contemporary international designers and old-established local craft firms that share knowledge in open work processes and use it for innovative installations, objects, or furniture. When strongrooms are pensioned off, they quite often dream of the cinema – and of the time when break-ins were physical actions, gold bars and bundles of banknotes were still real, and hermetically sealed chambers developed by master designers played the leading roles next to the stars for a whole act – certainly a better and more thrilling fate than the bare existence in the cellar of an abandoned bank. Film director and multimedia artist Virgil Widrich transforms the strongroom of the former Zentralsparkasse branch on Sparkassaplatz 4 into a screen for anaglyph spatial projections. Red-and-green 3-D glasses are provided.

With Halle D, opened in 1958, Roland Rainer created one of the most important buildings of Austrian architecture, and today it appears just as impressive, untouched in its substance, and contemporary in architecture. The Austrian star architect moreover designed a major part of the furnishings and interior – for instance, the legendary stackable Stadthalle chairs and the Rainer cloakroom. The Wiener Stadthalle still harbors artworks of inestimable value, some conspicuous, some integrated into the everyday routine. Visitors can take a look behind the scenes and view the numerous objects of contemporary art in backstage guided tours throughout the year – as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, two such tours are being organized free of charge. www.stadthalle.com

Wood, what would you want more? The new online platform wildwood is presenting its first products, staged in its temporary facilities in a versatile program – including the Designers Dinner, free drinks, and Hornig coffee, even speed dating for interiors with VIERZUEINS DESIGN – thus giving the go-ahead for an initiative whose design is always based on the sensuousness of the material. Visitors are invited to test their sensuous skills on site by means of an interactive piece of furniture sculpture.

Due to the digitalization of all areas of life, we are increasingly confronted with the verbalization of images and the pictorialization of language. DEPARTURE TOUR 1: ARCHITECTURE IN FOCUS The Vienna Business Agency presents departure in focus / Marion Kuzmany (ARCH ON TOUR)

The CREATORS LAB motivates creative people to rethink their business models and aims at helping creative people from design and architecture to develop a direct exchange and sharing of experience with international design experts: studioBASAR combines architecture with social design in the urban environment.

Ineke Hans works with her product and furniture design between the charged polarities of industrial and manual production. Jólan van der Wiel’s experimental design pursues multidisciplinary and collaborative strategies. In small groups, participants discuss their business models and current challenges with the international experts. Moreover, during a public talk, the CREATORS LAB presenters showcase their portfolios on 30.9. in the Festival Headquarters. The CREATORS LAB is a format of the Vienna Business Agency and is operated in cooperation with the aws – austria wirtschaftsservice.

Education Workshop

In cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency, ARCH ON TOUR together with Markus Steinbichler (Gebietsbetreuung Stadterneuerung) leads the way in a versatile local tour through the southern part of the 15th district.

The walk starts out at the Festival Headquarters South, a former branch of the Zentralsparkasse remodeled between 1970 and 1974

by Johann Georg Gsteu. The route moves in a northerly direction as far as the Meiselmarkt. It is rich in variation, showing new developments in urban construction and the architectural trends in this up-and-coming urban region. The tour seeks out redevelopment properties, also co-working spaces in a former steel storage facility, intelligent open space design, smart interiors of new restaurants, and surprises with impressive urban perspectives. These include the overwhelming view from the Rustensteg – the old footbridge across the Western Railway tracks – all the way to the Gloriette.

Spotted: three locals. During the departure Tour LOCAL PRODUCTION IN FOCUS, participants visit business enterprises in the Focus District of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Here, they are given an inside view of the manufacturing concerns and businesses established there.

Starting with the design label URBAN TOOL, which is also partly responsible for the revival of Reindorfgasse, the tour goes on to include Ünique Skis, which makes customized skis in a beautiful brick building on Fünfhausgasse, and then on to the old-established Hornmanufaktur Petz, in which combs and brushes have been handmade since 1862. Incidentally, the latter is also taking part again in a Passionswege project this year. So there’s a lot to discover in the 15th – both in the southern and in the northern part.

More and more design studios are relocating to the 15th urban district – firstly, because it’s near the center, secondly, because of the relatively reasonable rents. During this focus tour, participants take a look behind the scenes and get an inside view of everyday routine in the Viennese design studios of mischer’traxler studio, Vandasye, and Lichtwitz Leinfellner visuelle Kultur KG as well as NOUS, a firm promoting digital transformation in the museum sector and far beyond. Common to all is their great success on both the national and international stages. En route, the participants are informed about development and production processes, and shown the immense creative potential in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus as a palpable and visual reality.

On the occasion of the CREATORS LAB, a format of the Vienna Business Agency in cooperation with the aws – austria wirtschaftsservice, three international designers present their studios: The product designer Ineke Hans, based in London and Amsterdam, engages in industrial and manual production. An exhibition in the Kunsthalle Wien is at present focusing on her work. Likewise from Amsterdam is Jólan van der Wiel, an experimental and trans-genre designer who among other things now and then makes magnetic shoes for the Icelandic musician Björk. He is also represented this year in the Passionswege format. Then there is the Romanian studioBASAR. Acting between the polarities of architecture and social design, its work deals with local urban culture in București.

With: Alex Axinte, Cristi Borcan (studioBASAR), Ineke Hans (studio INEKEHANS), Jólan van der Wiel The CREATORS LAB directs its focus onto creative people and start-ups from the fields of design and architecture that wish to develop, strengthen, and professionalize their business model.

Treptow-Köpenick meets Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus: Markus Bader from the Berlin studio raumlabor is a guest at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. Besides being an adjudicator in the social design format Stadtarbeit, he is given the opportunity to talk in detail about the work of this architectural interest collective. raumlabor has been working since 1999 at the interface of architecture, urban planning, art, and intervention. Its work addresses such themes as space, city and urban construction as a cultural project. Within the special format departure in focus, which deals specifically with Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and its circumstances, Markus Bader broaches on different issues of urban planning – and spans an arc from Berlin to Vienna.

ZERUNIANANDWEISZ (AT) with Wiener Silber Manufactur

The 15th is an upcoming Viennese urban district. While increasing numbers of young enterprises from design and architecture are setting up here, there are quite a few established concerns and agencies that are also based in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Much that is new is cropping up, and has done in recent years, particularly in and around Reindorfgasse.

It is probably partly the favorable rents, otherwise the proximity to the center, and excellent transport infrastructure that are causing people to be interested in the district. More and more restaurants are opening, and it seems that the district, which historically was even regarded as a high-class suburb, is slowly being kissed awake from its Briar Rose sleep and is being discovered, most of all by young people.

The history of the Wiener Silber Manufactur began in the year 1882. It is a success story informed by passion for the material. A story that for a hundred years has consisted of two equal parts: traditional Viennese crafts and contemporary design. Cooperative ventures with Austrian and international artists and designers – not least within the Passionswege – have produced impressive collections, parts of which belong to the design canon. Also specialized in traditional crafts are Nadja Zerunian and Peter Weisz, who since 2014 have been working with families in Transylvania for the ERSTE Foundation Roma Partnership, helping them to revive the arts and crafts that ensure their livelihood. Last year, zerunianandweisz delighted visitors at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK with their narrative assemblages. They themselves, in turn, were delighted by Zizi Jeanmaire quite recently, one of the most successful ballerinas of the 1950s: Her grace and gorgeously quivering feather costume open the pages to a tongue-in-cheek story during the Passionswege 2017, told by zerunianandweisz and the Wiener Silber Manufactur.
