Jean-Michel Andre Jarre (born August 24, 1948 Lyon) is a French composer, performer and producer considered a pioneer of electronic music he is known for large outdoor performances, which included light projections laser and fireworks . Some of his best work includes album Oxygene, Equinoxe ,Magnetic Fields, Zoolook, Rendez-Vous ,Chronologie, Oxygene 7-13 and Metamorphosis . Jarre hold four Guinness World Records for the largest concert crowd: the Place de la Concorde (1979 1 mil), Rendez-Vous Houston (1986 15 mil), Paris La Defense (1990 2 mil) and Oxygen in Moscow (1997 35 mil), in 1995 he was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur from the French Government and since 1993 he is a UNESCO goodwill ambassador. Early years Jean-Michel Jarre is the son of famous French composer Maurice Jarre and France Jarre. His parents separated when he was five years old his father moved to the U.S. (he will not to see him again until 18) and Jarre left with his mother in the suburbs of Paris. in childhood Jarre studied piano but experience has proved problematic, his more general interest in musical instruments began with the discovery of a trumpet violin created by Boris Vian. Oxygene makes strong use of melody than rhythm and dissonance, and a collection of keyboards and synthesizers to create a range of sound textures and melodies. Key components of the album "sound included Eminent 310 Mellotron Electro-Harmonix Small Stone phaser on Eminent's string pads of Korg Mini. Pops drum machine and a liberal use of echo on various sound effects generated by VCS3 Synthesizers. 80 In 1981 Jean-Michel Jarre issued fifth album Magnetic Fields (Les Chants alternative title Magnétiques) . The sounds used on the album are primarily based around the capabilities of Fairlight CMI Both. Jarre and Peter Gabriel were among the first artists to take delivery of the Fairlight platform and often uses the Magnetic Fields Part 2 Magnetic Fields Part 4 was released as singles . Jarre was invited to become the first Western musicians to give concerts in China . The concerts took place October 18-November 5, 1982 and contained the Laser Harp for the first time and since then is one of Jarre signature electronic instruments. Selections from these concerts was released later in 1982 as a double-disc LP titled "Concerts in China and supported by two singles : Orient Express and Souvenir China . On July 5, 1983 Jarre auctioned on vinyl only existing print of his latest album Music Feller Supermarkets. The music was created in a planned "Supermarché" konstutställning. The auction was held at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris before he left Radio Luxembourg broadcast the album in its entirety. The auction raised about 70 000 francs and Jarre promised to burn the original tape in the presence of a bailiff .

2010 On 1 March 2010, Jean Michel Jarre started the second leg of his 2009-2010 tour indoors, and on 10 June he was Presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Mojo magazine. On 30 May 2011, he released the double CD set Essentials & Rarities. The Essentials disc is a compilation of his famous bridge work. The Rarities disc includes tracks made before Oxygène.

On 1 July 2011, Jarre Performed a large scale concert in Monaco to celebrate the marriage of Prince Albert and his bride Charlene. During the last [quarter] of 2011 he Concluded his three-years tour.

Personal life

Jarre has been married three times. He was married to Flore Guillard from 20 January 1975 until 1977, their daughter Émilie Charlotte was born in 1975 (or 1976) and became a fashion model. He met his second wife Charlotte Rampling at a dinner party in St Tropez in 1976.Both were in failing marriages, but they each obtained a divorce (Rampling was married to New Zealander Bryan Southcombe).The two married, Jarre gaining custody of his daughter Émilie Charlotte,and Rampling her son Barnaby. Together they have a son, David. In 1995 photographs in Hello! showed Jarre apparently romantically involved with 31-year old secretary Odile Froument, and in 1996 Jarre and Rampling separated. They divorced in 2002. He had a brief relationship with Isabelle Adjani,but married French actress Anne Parillaud in May 2005. In November 2010 the couple announced their divorce. Jarre has a half-sister Stéphanie Jarre, from Maurice Jarre's other marriages. His half-brother, Kevin Jarre, died in 2011.Although Maurice and Jean-Michel remained estranged, following Maurice's death in 2009 Jarre paid tribute to his legacy.Jarre said about his father: “My father and I never really achieved a real relationship. We probably saw each other 20 or 25 times in our lifetime. When you are able, at my age, to count the times you have seen your father, it says something... I think it's better to have conflict, or, if you have a parent who dies, you grieve, but the feeling of absence is very difficult to fill, and it took me a while to absorb that”

The China Concerts ◄ (4 versions) PolyGram Music Video 1989 The Concerts in China (French title: Les Concerts en Chine) is a live album by Jean Michel Jarre, recorded in 1981 and released in 1982 on Disques Dreyfus. It was recorded during Jarre's Concerts in China tour of Autumn 1981, which consisted of five Peking and Shanghai concerts in China; this was the first time a Western pop artist performed in China after the Cultural Revolution.

The album is a balance of previously released tracks by Jarre, new compositions inspired by Chinese culture, and one rearranged traditional Chinese track ("Fishing Junks at Sunset"). The music is combined live and studio work, plus ambient sound recordings. The most live tracks are the Equinoxe and Magnetic Fields sets. New compositions include "Night in Shanghai", "Laser Harp", "Arpegiator", "Orient Express" and "Souvenir of China". "Fishing Junks at Sunset" is a new arrangement of a very old traditional Chinese song known as the "Fisherman's Chant at Dusk" which was performed and recorded with The Peking Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, and is often wrongly attributed as being composed by Jean Michel Jarre, misled by the album inlay. The album was originally released as a double-disc LP, then as a double-disc CD. There was also a CD release in two separate volumes, with the cover color changed to blue (Vol. 1) and yellow (Vol. 2). In 1997, a one-disc remastered CD was released, made possible by an extended running time of 78:17 minutes and by reducing the gaps and audience noise between tracks. One of the album's original tracks – "Arpegiator" – was used in the soundtrack of the cult film 9½ Weeks. The Concerts in China's opening track "The Overture" is in fact the first movement of "Magnetic Fields Part 1" slowed down. The album reached #6 in the UK charts and #1 in Portugal.

Destination Docklands - The London Concert â—„ (2 versions) PolyGram Music Video, Channel 5 1989 Destination Docklands was an event consisting of two concerts by musician Jean Michel Jarre on the Royal Victoria Docks, Docklands, London on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October 1988, to coincide with the release of Jarre's new album Revolutions. The concerts were attended by 100.000 people on each night. Accompanied by fireworks and a light show, the concert also featured The Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin who joined Jarre on the tracks "London Kid" and "Fourth Rendez-Vous The Saturday performance was broadcast on BBC Radio One. The Sunday show, During Which it rained heavily, was recorded for a live album and VHS released in 1989.

Rendez-Vous Houston - A City In Concert â—„ (5 versions) PolyGram Music Video 1989 Rendez-vous Houston: A City in Concert was a live performance by musician Jean Michel Jarre amidst the skyscrapers of downtown Houston on the evening of April 5, 1986,

coinciding with the release of the Rendez-Vous album. For a period of time, Held it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest outdoor "rock concert" in history, with figures varying from 1 to 1.5 million in attendance. Rendez-vous Houston is remembered for being the Which concert celebrated the astronauts of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, Which Happened only had two and a half months beforehand. One of Jarre's friends, astronaut Ron McNair, had been killed in the disaster. Planning and problems of the concert In 1985, Jarre was contacted by the musical director of the Houston Grand Opera with The Proposal for him related to the celebrations of Texas' 150th birthday in 1986, the 150th birthday of the city of Houston and NASA's 25th birthday. Because of NASA's Involvement, Jarre got the chance to keep in contact with a friend of his, astronaut Bruce McCandless II captain who later Introduced Jarre is a companion of his flight, jazz musician and astronaut Ron McNair. Together they had the idea That for the celebrations, Jarre would create a piece of music that Could be performed by McNair on his saxophone. The idea was that McNair, on his next trip into space in the Challenger Space Shuttle, would perform (and record video onto) the new piece of music, Which would then be projected (through video playback) onto a giant screen That was to be Constructed on the front of one of the buildings. On January 28th, 1986, McNair telephoned Jarre for the last time. "... Everything's ready. See you in a week's time. Watch me on TV for the takeoff!" On That same day, an appalled world witnessed the historic tragedy - the Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated in mid-air whilst on its ascent into space. Distraught by what Happened, Jarre almost DECIDED to cancel the concert. However, astronauts from NASA (including Bruce McCandless) telephoned Jarre. They asked not to cancel Jarre, as now the concert must go ahead, and be Held in Respect to pay tribute to the astronauts who had lost Their lives in the disaster. The run-up to the concert itself still did not go smoothly. Rain poured down on Houston a couple of days before the concert, destroying much of the equipment on stage (Which was repaired by the day of the concert), breaking wires and ruining instruments. Furthermore, there had been a very strong wind blowing all week, Which ended up splitting open the giant projection screen (Which was made from Several small canvas panels) and Causing it to come crashing down. The local police turned up During the middle of a rehearsal Demanding immediate payment of a fine, the residents who lived nearby were complaining of Excessive noise and were exhausted from sleepless nights Their. Also, FBI officers threatened to put a stop to the whole Proceedings Because they were being Deprived of electricity. 30 large lamps had been installed on top of the FBI headquarters, and they were Causing Problems With Their surveillance of Colonel Gaddafi, who was visiting the city at that time.

There was still one more slight issue before the concert started. The chief of the Houston Fire Department, Robert Clayton, had told Francis Dreyfus, Jarre's manager, that 'the show must be canceled. This was due to a change of the wind direction, the Chief Concerned That was the crowd would be showered with firework debris. After some back-andforth argument with Dreyfus, Clayton Agreed The Concert That Could proceed on a 'see how it goes' term. During the concert (specifically, During the performance of Equinoxe Part 5), the amount of fireworks being used and the direction of the wind did indeed cause debris to rain down on the audience, covering Them in ash. Clayton Began frantically to try to stop the Proceedings, Fearing That people would be injured. Although his Fears were Duly Noted, the crowd took no notice of the ash falling onto it Carried Them and enjoying the concert Proceedings. During the concert, Which Interstate 45 runs past the downtown Buffalo Bayou Park, came to a standstill as locals and travelers alike long distance stopped, Parked on the crowded freeway and applauded, Wept and laughed in unison with the thousands below Them in the park.

Paris La Defense - A City In Concert (VHS) Genesis 1992 Paris La Defense - Une Ville En Concert Held was a concert by musician Jean Michel Jarre on the district of La DĂŠfense in Paris on Bastille Day, July 14, 1990. About 2.5 million people standing in front of the pyramidical stage all the way down to the Arc de Triomphe witnessed this event, setting a new Guinness Book of Records entry for Jarre. Europe In Concert ◄ (3 versions) PolyGram Music Video 1994 Jarre embarked on his first tour in 1993. The tour, which was named “Europe in Concert”, which naturally took him around most of Europe, but not Scandinavia. The idea of a tour arose around the collaboration with Swatch the previous year…they sponsored the total of sixteen concerts, the first being set on the tidal island of Mont Saint Michel, in France. Laser beams and lights were projected onto the buildings on the island and the stage was placed in front of the island itself during ebb tide. The stage and the scenery for this tour was like a miniature city skyline which Jarre carried across the continent.During the same year Jarre released Chronologie, his first studio album in three years, and this new composition was central to the tour’s repertoire. As a whole, the tour was seen by 650,000 people.

AERO Compilation album by Jean Michel Jarre - Released September 2004 - Recorded 2004 at Croissy Studio AERO (Anthology of Electronic Revisited Originals) is a 2004 album of electronic music by Jean Michel Jarre. It is Composed of Previously-released tracks re-recorded in 5.1 surround sound plus three new tracks and a bonus live track. All tracks are sewn together through surround-sound "Scenes".

The album includes a CD and a DVD, the DVD-Video features Dolby Digital and DTS audio, Whereas the CD is in stereo, mixed to give a more spacious impression than usual. Jean-Michel Jarre: Solidarnosc Live (2005, DVD NTSC; released in 1-disc and 2-disc DVD/CD versions) Space of Freedom was a concert performed by French musician Jean Michel Jarre in Poland, at the Gdańsk Shipyard, on August 26, 2005, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Solidarity trade union's foundation. Jarre was invited by Lech Walesa to hold this concert, Which was watched by an audience of more than 170.000 people who bought tickets, as well as many others who observed the event from outside the shipyard, in high buildings as Zieleniak dry and the hills of Top Gradow. The album tells, in musical form, and Metaphorical love story of Fictional cartoon characters Téo and Téa, two lookalike creatures (one male, one female) who meet, fall in love and spend one day together. They are seen in the computer-animated video clip Accompanying the title track.

The album was launched, in physical form, as an edition containing just the CD and also as a "De Luxe Edition" containing the CD bundled with a DVD. The DVD features the same tracks mixed for 5.1 sound, as well as the video clip for the title track in high-definition, Viewable on personal computers.

Téo & Téa is of a more simplistic and playful nature than Jarre's previous albums and, like 2000's Metamorphoses, is dance-oriented.

Pre-launch campaign The launch marketing campaign of Téo & Téa started in January 2007, two months prior to the album's launch, with video teasers on YouTube, a CD single for clubs and radio stations, pages on Myspace, T-shirts featuring three different motifs on Spreadshirt, and a DVD single released to clubs and TV stations. In all these cases the name of Jean Michel Jarre was not mentioned or associated with the music. A promotional audio CD of the album was released to the press in February 2007, this time mentioning Jarre's name. On 20 March 2007, an official companion website was launched.

Special editions A promotional CD single, including the track "Téo & Téa", and a promotional DVD single including the video clip for the same track, were released to clubs and radio stations in February 2007, without reference to composer or artist. A promotional audio CD of the album was released to the press in February 2007. The iTunes release of the album includes some exclusive bonuses: the videos "Making of (English)" – 8:35 and "Making of (French)" – 11:30; pre-orders also included the tracks "Téo & Téa — 6:00 AM Special" and "Jean Michel Jarre's Track-by-Track Commentary" (English and French versions). French hypermarket chain Carrefour included an exclusive 32-page booklet with the album.

Attribution of preset patches Téo & Téa features patches of drum patterns found on the Roland MC-808, a Groovebox Which of the album makes quite heavy use. Starting from 19 June 2007, there was a debate amongst fans at Several internet forums Regarding Jarre's Participation in Creating Them, or he might have That Copied Them in the album with too much ease. Jarre's management Aero Productions responded on the matter on 28 June 2007 with a statement to the administrator of the then Jarre's "official" web forum, who posted the message Following on:

"Jean Michel Jarre explained that he entered into a partnership with Roland Japan last year, to collaborate with and contribute to demos, patterns and presets for their future products. Jean Michel Jarre explained that the Roland MC808 was one of these products, therefore it is not surprising that certain elements of his new TÉO & TÉA album appear on the Roland MC-808, or any other recent Roland product for that matter." However, the original statement from Jarre and Aero Productions has not been made public, nor has it been explicitly stated that Jarre is the sole creator of the patterns. Jarre was credited with a patch on another model of Roland that was released in the same year, the, Roland SH-201 but Jarre's name does not appear on Roland's list of patch creators for the MC-808, Tim Hüfken (credited as "artistic collaborator" in the booklet of Téo & Téa) appears instead. On the other hand, Jarre himself is credited in the booklet of Téo & Téa for "drums programming" on the Roland MC-808.

Comment by Jarre on the album In an interview by French Trax magazine in 2010, Jean Michel Jarre said Téo & Téa had been a mistake in his career: C'etait une erreur cet album, une connerie. Sur un plan personnel, j'avais plein de galères et je me suis amusé à jouer avec des samples, comme une récréation. Et on l'a sorti comme album. Mais quand je le réécoute aujourd'hui... It is his first release on EMI Records. The album was released in three different editions: a 5.1 Music Disc edition featuring the new digital master recording of Oxygène, a CD and 2D DVD special edition featuring Oxygène — Live in Your Living Room DVD (an exclusive private live performance of Oxygène, filmed in Lint, Belgium), and a limited edition CD + 3D DVD featuring Oxygène — Live in Your Living Room DVD in stereoscopic 3D High-Definition, which also includes two pairs of 3D glasses To promote this major release, Jean Michel Jarre performed a series of ten Oxygène Live concerts in Paris, inside the Theâtre Marigny, from December 12 to December 26, 2007. AOR was a performance by Jean Michel Jarre. Jarre became the youngest musician to see one of his works played at the Paris Opera, at its reopening on 21 October 1971. The reopening consisted of three ballets; the first and third ballet were set to classical music, AOR the second ballet that night - was completely electronic. It was the first time that electronic music had been allowed to be used. Jarre even had to paint the speakers of his synthesizers gold to match the decor of the opera house. There he performed with the Paris Opera Ballet, choreographer Norbert Schmucki and musician Igor Wakhévitch, who co-wrote the music. Jarre composed the music for two additional ballets: Le Labyrinthe (1972) and Dorian (a pas de deux) (1973), but it is currently unknown if he performed them as well.

Place De La Concorde was Jean Michel Jarre's first concert, held on July 14, 1979, celebrating the Bastille Day. One million spectators attended this concert, setting up a new record for Jean-Michel to the Guinness Book of Records. The concert was broadcast on TV by Eurovision. A rare VHS + 7" single with tracks proposed as concert tracks was released.

The Concerts in China - 1981    

The Concerts in China was a concert tour byJean Michel Jarre , notable for marking the opening of post-Mao Zedong China to live Western music, in 1981. Five concerts were held in the two biggest cities, for an estimated audience of 120,000 spectators, on October 21 and 22 in Beijing, and on October 26 through 28 in Shanghai The concerts were filmed and recorded for commercial releases. Due to the low quality of the recorded sound, the tracks were enhanced (overdubbed) for the release of the double album The Concerts in China. An 80-minute documentary entitled 'JeanMichel Jarre - China Concerts 1981' was made by producer/director Andrew Piddington for Central Television in the UK. It was shown once in 1982 on the ITV network in the UK, and did not receive a video release until 1989, when a VHS-video was released. The film was partially released by Shock DVD in Australia in 2008, but they were prevented from selling it by Jarre and record label Disques Dreyfus. The release was not from the master tapes, but from an 'off-air' Australian TV showing, so the quality was imperfect. The film has yet to receive an authorised, high-quality DVD release. The concert featured the first use of a laser harp.

Rendez-vous Houston: A City in Concert was a live performance by

musician Jean Michel Jarre amidst the skyscrapers of downtown Houston on the evening of April 5, 1986, coinciding with the release of the Rendez-Vous album. For a period of time, it held a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest outdoor "rock concert" in history, with figures varying from 1 to 1.5 million in attendance. Rendez-vous Houston is remembered for being the concert which celebrated the astronauts of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, which had happened only two and a half months beforehand. One of Jarre's friends, astronaut Ron McNair, had been killed in the disaster. He was supposed to play the saxophone from space during the track "Last Rendez-Vous"; his substitute for the concert was Houston native Kirk Whalum.

Planning and problems of the concert In 1985, Jarre was contacted by the musical director of the Houston Grand Opera with the proposal for him related to the celebrations of Texas' 150th birthday in 1986, 150th birthday of the city of Houston and NASA's 25th birthday. Because of NASA's involvement, Jarre got the chance to keep in contact with a friend of his, astronaut captain Bruce

McCandless II who later introduced Jarre to a flight companion of his, astronaut and jazz musician Ron McNair. Together they had the idea that for the celebrations, Jarre would create a piece of music that could be performed by McNair on his saxophone. The idea was that McNair, on his next trip into space in the Challenger Space Shuttle, would perform (and record onto video) the new piece of music, which would then be projected (through video playback) onto a giant screen that was to be constructed on the front of one of the buildings. On January 28th, 1986, McNair telephoned Jarre for the last time. "...Everything's ready. See you in a week's time. Watch me on TV for the takeoff!" On that same day, an appalled world witnessed a historic tragedy - the Challenger Space Shuttle disintegrated in mid-air whilst on its ascent into space. Distraught by what happened, Jarre almost decided to cancel the concert. However, astronauts from NASA (including Bruce McCandless) telephoned Jarre. They asked Jarre not to cancel, as now the concert must go ahead, and be held in tribute to pay respect to the astronauts who had lost their lives in the disaster. The run-up to the concert itself still did not go smoothly. Rain poured down on Houston a couple of days before the concert, destroying much of the equipment on stage (which was repaired by the day of the concert), breaking wires and ruining instruments. Furthermore, there had been a very strong wind blowing all week, which ended up splitting open the giant projection screen (which was made from several small canvas panels) and causing it to come crashing down. The local police turned up during the middle of a rehearsal demanding immediate payment of a fine; the residents who lived nearby were complaining of excessive noise and were exhausted from their sleepless nights. Also, FBI officers threatened to put a stop to the whole proceedings because they were being deprived of electricity. 30 large lamps had been installed on top of FBI headquarters, and they were causing problems with their surveillance of Colonel Gaddafi, who was visiting the city at that time. There was still one more slight problem before the concert started. The chief of the, Houston Fire Department Robert Clayton, had told Francis Dreyfus, Jarre's manager, that the show must be cancelled. This was due to a change of the wind direction; the Chief was concerned that the crowd would be showered with firework debris. After some back-andforth argument with Dreyfus, Clayton agreed that the concert could proceed on a 'see how it goes' term. During the concert (specifically, during the performance of Equinoxe Part 5), the amount of fireworks being used and the direction of the wind did indeed cause debris to rain down on the audience, covering them in ash. Clayton frantically began to try to stop the proceedings, fearing that people would be injured. Although his fears were duly noted, the crowd took no notice of the ash falling onto them and carried on enjoying the concert proceedings. During the concert, Interstate 45 which runs past the downtown Buffalo Bayou Park, came to a standstill as locals and long distance travellers alike stopped, parked on the crowded freeway and applauded, wept and laughed in unison with the thousands below them in the park.

Destination Docklands was an event consisting of two concerts by musician Jean Michel Jarre on the Royal Victoria Docks, Docklands, London on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October 1988, to coincide with the release of Jarre's new album Revolutions.[ The concerts were attended by 100,000 people on each night. Accompanied by fireworks and a light show, the concert also featured The Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin who joined Jarre on the tracks "London Kid" and "Fourth Rendez-Vous". The Saturday performance was broadcast on BBC Radio One. The Sunday show, during which it rained heavily, was recorded for a live album and VHS released in 1989 .

Paris La Defense - Une Ville En Concert was a concert held by musician Jean Michel Jarre on the district of La Défense in Paris on Bastille Day, July 14, 1990. About 2.5 million people standing in front of the pyramidical stage all the way down to the Arc de Triomphe witnessed this event, setting a new Guinness Book of Records entry for Jarre. The concert was funded by Mairie De Paris, Ministry of Culture and a small cluster of high-profile Parisian business concerns. Later, a concert video as well as a photobook of the event were released. The show featured new tracks from the Waiting for Cousteau album, and vast grotesque marionettes created by Trinidadian Peter Minshall. A VHS cassette of the concert was released in 1992 .

Legends of the Lost City - 1992 1992 was the year when Jean Michel Jarre brought his talent to the continent of Africa for the first time. This took the form of three multimedia shows in early December in Bophuthatswana. The setting was the new Lost City and was performed as a tribute to the legend of the Lost City, a civilisation that centuries ago created a paradise which was later destroyed by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The local community participated with their song and music specially arranged by Jarre for the occasion.

Technical Data: Team: A team of 105 technicians, including 55 French, worked hard for 4 weeks to build the whole infrastructure of the show, ie, all lighting, sound, control room, etc.. This represents a total of over 60 km of cables diverse and varied! The team took only two days to remove everything! Pyrotechnics: The show was the occasion of the largest fireworks shot ever made in South Africa. Nearly 15 tons of fireworks were reduced in smoke during the three evenings, which represents over 1,000 pieces every night. The length of wiring required for real time control of fireworks exceeded 8 km! Sound: Any sound reinforcement was available on site, it was not necessary to import it from France as was the case for lighting. To realize the power of the sound system, just know that it was approximately equivalent to 2.5 times the sound system used for the American SuperBowl! Again, this is a record in South Africa! Communications: As for sound, the communication network was available on site. The purpose of this network was to connect all technicians to optimize and coordinate their work. More than 60 communication stations and 9 km of cable was needed. Lighting: Most of the lights were imported from France (25 tons!) In a Russian Ilyushin 76 aircraft of the airline of South Africa (about 2500 pieces of lighting). It has added some 450 pieces of lighting standard that the team has procured locally. The lights were installed throughout the valley, including the Palace. The wiring required to control these lighting effects exceeded 12 km long! Among the most illuminating parts impresionnantes include: EAP: This is a continuation entirely controlled by an operator who can do what he likes to project moving images wherever he wants. This lawsuit uses a 2500 W bulb and can make projections to hundreds of meters! The show used 10 of these lawsuits. Beam: 18 of these systems fully controlled by computer were used. Each of them has a 7000 Watt bulb. Skytrackers: 4 skytrackers were used to generate lighting effects through their four bulbs of 4000 W each fully synchronized! Projectors: These projectors that are normally used to illuminate the football stadiums in the USA. The team of Jean Michel has adapted for the occasion (addition of a color change) and it is not less than 100 of these projectors have been spread throughout the valley, thus emphasizing all the relief Site. Military spotlights: These projectors DCA type used during the Second World War, provided by the South African army, found there a quite peaceful use!

Power supply: The show requires to be done properly a consistent power supply, capable of delivering more than 1.5 MW. Over 10 kilometers of electrical cable feeding were necessary for performing ensembles.

Europe in Concert - 1993 Jarre held a tour of huge outdoor concerts throughout Europe in 1993 After the release of the Chronologie album, starting in Mt. Saint Michel, France and ending in Tours, France. In total 660,000 people attended the venues, and a VHS of the Barcelona concert was released. Tracks recorded on several concerts of the tour were used for the Hong Kong album.

Jarre played two tracks under poor weather conditions The live on RAI TV in Italy. He was part of the Fiat That Several artist had invited to perform on Piazza Vittorio Venetto. The show was Aimed to Promote the Fiat Bravo and Brava. The crowd of 300 000 was soaked in the middle of the performance, but Jarre made fun of the hazardous situation and this showcase was greeted by the Italian audience. Jarre Performed two of his best-known tracks, Rendez-vous IV and Chronologie IV. Patrick Rondat had to perform extra work solo to wait while Jarre was fixing some technical issues. On the TV broadcast, We Could see the italian host of the show, Pippo Baudo, standing right next to the Frenchman, Which was really annoying. There were some fireworks, too, but the TV Them missed while focusing on Jarre's retro-lighted keyboard. At the end of the two songs, the rain suddenly stopped. Nuit Électronique - 1998 Jarre returned to the Eiffel Tower on Bastille Day 1998, exactly 3 years after Concert For Tolerance, accompanied by various dance artists like Apollo 440 and Tetsuya "TK" Komuro. The event marked the end of the 1998 Football World Cup, which happened to have hosted and won by France. 600,000 people attended the concert, A VHS concert video titled Paris Live "Rendez-Vous 98 Electronic Night was released in Japan as part of the TK 1998 Latest Works Tetsuya Komuro boxset. The show proved controversial among Jarre fans, due its heavy bias towards dance and techno style reworkings of existing Jarre tracks.

The Twelve Dreams of the Sun – 99/00 • From December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000 • Giza, Egypt • Audience: 120,000 The Twelve Dreams Of The Sun was a concert held by musician Jean Michel Jarre on the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt starting on December 31, 1999 and carrying overnight to January 1, 2000. It was attended by 120,000 people. The concert consisted of two parts, the Main Concert and a Sunrise Concert. The concert cost approximately $9,500,000 and it originated when Jean-Michel Jarre was contacted by the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak with a special project to celebrate the dawn of the new Millennium at the foot of the only remaining monument of the original 7 Wonders of the World - the Great Pyramids. Jarre's team had developed giant projections to be displayed on the faces of the Great Pyramids, however a heavy cloud of fog made the pyramids almost invisible, so most of the projections were discarded. Parts of the concert were broadcast live on TV stations around the world.

Map & Desciption of the Show

The format of the show is something quite different to past shows by Jean Michel Jarre, mainly because The Twelve Dreams of the Sun will last 12 hours - starting at 19:00 on 31st December 1999 and finishing at 07:00 on 1st January 2000.

Despite the show being 12 hours long, this does not mean Jean Michel is going to play a 12 hour show. The Twelve Dreams of the Sun will encompass a collection of different musical styles, cultures and events. Full details of the line-up and event schedule for the show is not currently known, however the following has been gathered over the past few months as to the structure of the show: The Twelve Dreams of the Sun will be split into twelve movements, and there are three important stages of the show; the beginning at 19:00, midnight when it becomes year 2000, and at the end of the event. Jean Michel will play approximately a 2 hour show from 22:00 to 00:00, to see in the third millennium in Egypt. Although it is expected that Jean Michel will be involved with the show to some degree before and after his performance. A large number of artists will also be involved with the production, with a mix of different cultures and styles. The start of the event will see the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, with 2000 children present on stage, each holding one candle (one candle to symbolise one year). The end of the show will see the gold cap placed on the pyramid Khufu, with a recording of the Egpytian song diva Um Kalthoum being played, who died in 1975.

After Jarre's scheduled performance at 00:00, acts from all over the world will perform for one hour, starting when it is midnight in their home country, in a sense celebrating the new millennium again.

As ever with previous productions that Jean Michel has been involved with, the theme is important, with The Twelve Dreams of the Sun taking a retrospective look back at accomplishments and events in Egypt, and a look to the future of Egypt and the hopes of Egyptians. The show promises to have an unmistakable worldwide feel to it, with instruments such as reed flutes and the lute being used. The Cairo Opera House is assisting in organizing The Twelve Dreams of the Sun. In addition, Dutch electronic giants Phillips are working on new instruments for the show.

Since the 1977 release of Oxygene--which hit #2 on the UK pop album charts despite being made completely on synthesizers, containing no vocals and coming from France--Jarre has put on the biggest concerts in the world (in China, Paris, the London Docklands, and, on Millennium Eve, at the Great Pyramid), collaborated with everyone from Laurie Anderson, Sharon Corr, and Apollo 440 to Hank Marvin (the Shadows) and the Choir of Radio France. After revisiting his seminal release in 1997 with Oxygene 7-13, Jarre started to move in a new direction. Jean Michel Jarre: I suppose that after having done Oxygene 7-13, when I revisited that past, my past, I wanted to open a new chapter and start with a blank page again. I also like this idea of movement between two states which is what metamorphoses is. Where things are biologically or ideologically impure, something in between pure concepts. I don't like pure concepts. I like things that are on the fringe of movements. 6B Amazon.co.uk: This is the first time you've used vocals as something other than another instrument; the first time that they've been the focus of a song. Jarre: I suppose I wanted to be more direct, more expressive. With instrumental music, you're dealing more with soundscapes or landscapes. You're being more descriptive and impressionistic, but as soon as you have words--even if it is only a few words--you are dealing with ideas and concepts and stories. Amazon.co.uk: Why have you not used vocals this way before? Jarre: I suppose I was not ready. I was shy and not confident enough, maybe, of using my own voice. Amazon.co.uk: Laurie Anderson is one of the featured vocalists on Metamorphoses. How did that collaboration come about? Jarre: I've known Laurie for quite a while; we worked together on my Zoolook album. When I did this song ("Je Me Souviens"), I immediately felt that Laurie should do it. I had this idea of having very simple words, generic words: "heart", "child", "fish", "tree". Your vision of the tree, your tree is different from my tree, and I wanted to include that dimension. So I asked her: "Ok these are generic words that everyone can understand; I would like you to give a range of emotion between love, despair, fears, hopes and all that." She did it beautifully. Amazon.co.uk: And Natacha Atlas? Jarre: That is another story. I really wanted to have some kind of eastern feel in this album because I really think that one of the main metamorphoses of our culture. I've always been cautious about making this kind of world music statement--worried that it's very 1980s, thinking ethnic stuff is trendy--but these days I think there is a true eastern feel and connection wherever you are in Europe. In France it is the North African connection, in Germany it would be the Turkish connection, in England the Pakistani or Indian connection. It is the reality of the street on a day to day basis. I think that if Europe exists in the future, it'll not be because of us, because we are not able to do it by ourselves. It will be because of the presence of this eastern connection, this glue from outside. When I heard Natacha Atlas in, Transglobal Underground this Jewish Egyptian with a Belgian passport speaking Arabic with a European accent... this girl symbolises exactly what I feel. Actually, Oxygene was not my first attempt. Even then, to begin with, it was only popular on my street probably. Oxygene was refused by a lot of record companies. They all said it wasn't pop, there wasn't a singer, there's no three minute singles and on top of all this the guy is French! It will never work. I was emotionally really convinced that the music I was doing was not only a new way of doing music, but it would become a style, a genre, itself in the future: I had to keep on going. Amazon.co.uk: What do you think of the next wave of French electronic acts? Jarre: I really love Daft Punk and Air. They're really interesting guys, doing interesting music. I also really like lots of other new electronic artists: Underworld, the Chemical Brothers, Les Rythmes Digitales. They are part of my family. Rendez-Vous in Space - 2001 For the 1st day of 2001, Jarre teamed up with Tetsuya "TK" Komuro and writer Arthur C. Clarke to celebrate the beginning of the 21st century on Okinawa, Japan, with 20,000 attending in the Ginowan Seaside Park. A purported intention to release the new compositions didn't come to fruition, as the band formed by Jarre and Komuro became shortlived. Some of those themes were incorporated by Jarre in other releases.

Thousands of years to the more distant stars and perhaps Millions of years to other galaxies. They will depend to a large extent on the gravitational field on a planet which has a much higher gravity than Earth - obviously you couldn't have large animals - they'd be small and squat and perhaps with many legs. On the other hand, on planets with very low gravity you would have very spindly, thin animals - very tall ones - and trees perhaps hundreds of feet or hundreds of metres high and maybe even kilometres high. The variations we will find in space are almost infinite... Nobody Space is unimaginally empty. Beyond human comprehention. The planets and stars are seperated by inconceviable distances. So one of the aspects of space is utter lonliness. And of course, absolute silence. The effect on the human psychy will be profound - some people may even go mad, because of the lonliness and silence. On the other hand, others may find themselves in that very clear... Rendez-Vous in Space A "Rendez-vous in Space" would be a meeting with other space travellers -human or alien. It could be re-visiting a colony in space, on a planet or a space station. Obviously there'll be a great deal of love-making in space and there are some suggestions that's already happened. Making love under low gravity obviously has attractions as how often does the weight of your partner cut of your circulation!? Race in Space Because light travels at a finite speed - and so therefore anything further away is further and further back in time. The Moon is only a second away. The planets, minutes away. The

Hymn to the Akropolis - 2001 On June 19 and 20, 2001, Jarre played two concerts at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to raise money for the Greek organization Elpida, with 15,000 people attending in total. A new composition, Akropolis, was later used at the Beijing & Poland concerts under new titles. The second concert was broadcast live on French radio NRJ and on French TV channel M6, for which one track had to be dropped due to time constraints, and is available for rebroadcast.

Le Printemps de Bourges - 2002 Jarre's most confidential performance to date took place at Bourges, France in April 2002. It was in the context of the very hype electronic music festival called Le Printemps de Bourges.The concert, more in the lines of a Master Class, was shared by a full house of no more than 100, in the historic setting of Palais Jacques-Coeur.

For the occasion Jarre had taken along his Theremin and synthesisers of both older and newer generation. The theme of this singular performance was the development of electronic music, and Jarre also played a piece, Blue, from one of his very first works, Aor, which he composed while he was studying with Pierre Schaeffer at GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales).

Jarre also performed two original compositions, Bourges I and Bourges II, which are in the vein of experimental techno and electronica, specially composed for the occasion. Jarre also introduced his various instruments and discussed his approach to composition and its evolution over the years.

The theme of the concert was the development of electronic music, so Jarre had brought new as well as old synthesizers, including the theremin. One surprising track performed during the concert was Blue, dating back to the early seventies, one of the parts from Aor, music composed while Jarre was studying under musique concrete legend, Pierre Schaefer. Other tracks included were Bourges I and II, mixing contemporary techno and electronica with improvisation. Aero - Tribute to the Wind - 2002 Jean Michel Jarre’s first open air concert in Scandinavia was staged in a rainy windmill field in Denmark, close to Gl. Vrå. The inspiration for the show was wind, first and foremost as an alternative energy source but also the wind as natural force. It was rain, however, that stole the show and turned the windmill field into a regular mud bath during and especially after the concert when the audience tried to make their way home. Despite the tough weather conditions the concert was an artistic success with good live-renditions from Jarre. Apart from two new quality compositions most of the tracks played had been rearranged for the show, some even quite a lot. The sound quality of the concert was one of the best Jarre has achieved for an open air show to date, and bearing in mind the difficult weather conditions and the location of the show, far away from everything and anything, this was simply impressive. Visually the show focused mostly on the stage with impressive colourful and surreal computer images. The windmills also served as pillars of light and added a touch of futurist aesthetic to the concert while fireworks battled the heavy wind and rain.

Live in Beijing - 2004 Kicking off the Year of France celebrations in China, Jarre performed two back-to-back concerts in Beijing, China, first at the Forbidden City and then at Tiananmen Square, on October 10, 2004. 15,000 selected people plus some who bought tickets attended the concerts which featured local Chinese musicians and marked the first 5.1 concert by Jarre. A DVD set called Jarre in China was released in 2005 including the full concerts and various extras. The concerts were broadcast by Chinese TV station CCTV for the whole world by HDTV satellite. A shortened one-hour version was made available for rebroadcast.

Jean Michel Jarre in concert at the Hans Christian Andersen commemoration gala Mr Jarre started the show with his musical and visual interpretation of Andersen’s tale "The Shadow", a 10 metre shadow projected onto a Chinese translation of the tale, accompanied by a vivid laser show. The spectacular two hour programme celebrated Andersen’s most famous tales and the story of his life, featuring music, film, acrobatics, ballet, tap dance and children's choirs. On the occasion of his performance Mr Jarre said: "As we celebrate Hans Christian Andersen, we celebrate more than an author. We celebrate education, through simple universal messages, through simple words, accessible to all, in any language. As a long standing ambassador to UNESCO, I see Hans Christian Andersen's work as a positive, timeless weapon to combat illiteracy, and promote a dignified action...education for all...education for everyone. The world has too many shadows, that deserve to meet, one day, an educated master...so let's help them."

At the gala event, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Her family were joined by other European royals and guests such as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Sir Roger Moore and Harry Belafonte, Danish football star Peter Schmeichel, Irish politician John Hume, Chilean writer Isabella Allende and others. The biggest Danish cultural event ever was broadcast to millions of TV viewers worldwide. In the spotlight was a stage built on four massive icicles, imitating the tale of The Snow Queen. The show called "Once Upon A Time" was hosted by Gladiator-actress Connie Nielsen. It began with French musician Jean-Michel Jarre's interpretation of "The Shadow" - a 10-metre shadow projected onto a Chinese translation of the tale. It danced its way through a sea of coloured laser-light and computerised music. The spectacular two-hour programme celebrated 12 of Andersen's most famous tales, featuring ballet, acrobatics, children's choirs and tap dance.

Salle des Étoiles - 2005 On August 6 and 7, 2005, Jean Michel Jarre staged two mini concerts in Monte Carlo, more specifically in Salle des Étoiles in Sporting-Monte Carlo Casino, for approximately 1000 dining guests. The set list consisted mainly of tracks from the Aero album and the sound was in 5.1 surround. Since the concert was an indoor event there were naturally certain visual limitations, but the mobile walls and roof allowed Jarre to play his famous laser harp during Rendez-Vous II.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Lech Wałęsa's Solidarity movement, Jean Michel Jarre performed an energetic concert in Gdańsk, northern Poland. The backdrop was the shipyard where workers went on strike in August 1980 leading to the eventual fall of communism in Poland. The setting includes a moving crane lit from the inside, and the hangar door opening to reveal an orchestra surrounded by sparks from metal welding.

Water for Life - 2006 December 16, 2006 Merzouga (Sahara desert), Morocco Audience: 15.000 people

"Water for Life" was a concert given by French electronic musician Jean Michel Jarre on the night of December 16, 2006 amidst the dunes of the Sahara desert at Merzouga, Morocco. The concert was held under the auspice of UNESCO as 2006 had been designated the International Year of Deserts and Desertification by the United Nations General Assembly. The free 2h25m concert, sponsored by the Kingdom of Morocco, was attended by an estimated 10-15,000 spectators. It was filmed in high-definition TV and broadcast live by the public Moroccan TV station (channels RTM1 and TVM International) and by Almaghribya TV. A one-hour edit was produced for sale to TV stations. A souvenir 172-page hardback book entitled "The Making of Water for Life" was published in 2007 which documented how the concert was staged in detail

Stage The stage featured a collection of nine 4-by-10-metre vertical screens (similar to those in the 1993 Europe in Concert tour), described as "doors to the desert". On them were projected images - static and animated -, as in a typical Jarre concert. Behind the stage, the desert dunes were lit, and fireworks were shot behind and around the stage. Two general rehearsals were held, on the previous night and on the evening of the day of the concert, complete with fireworks. Like Jarre's previous concert, Space of Freedom, they were filmed to get additional coverage for a post-live edit; the rehearsals were also filmed to prevent any bad weather during the live concert preventing its release on video, as had happened before with The Twelve Dreams of the Sun (1999–2000) and Aero - Tribute to the Wind (2002). During rehearsals, a balloon with an internal projector was placed on center stage, but it did not appear in the concert itself.

The album was released in the U.S. three weeks later, on 16 April 2007. It is Jarre's thirteenth studio album. The album tells, in musical form, a metaphorical love story of fictional cartoon characters Téo and Téa, two lookalike creatures (one male, one female) who meet, fall in love and spend one day together. They are seen in the computer-animated video clip accompanying the title track. The album was launched, in physical form, as an edition containing just the CD and also as a "De Luxe Edition" containing the CD bundled with a DVD. Attribution of preset patches Téo & Téa features patches of drum patterns found on the Roland MC-808, a Groovebox of which the album makes quite heavy use. Starting from 19 June 2007, there was a debate amongst fans at several internet forums regarding Jarre's participation in creating them, or that he might have copied them in the album with too much ease. Usage of these patterns is not illegal, as expressed in the user manual on page 13. Jarre's management Aero Productions responded on the matter on 28 June 2007 with a statement to the administrator of the then Jarre's "official" web forum, who posted the following message on: "Jean Michel Jarre explained that he entered into a partnership with Roland Japan last year, to collaborate with and contribute to demos, patterns and presets for their future products. Jean Michel Jarre explained that the Roland MC808 was one of these products, therefore it is not surprising that certain elements of his new TÉO & TÉA album appear on the Roland MC-808, or any other recent Roland product for that matter." However, the original statement from Jarre and Aero Productions has not been made public, nor has it been explicitly stated that Jarre is the sole creator of the patterns. Jarre was credited with a patch on another model of Roland that was released in the same year, the Roland SH-201,but Jarre's name does not appear on Roland's list of patch creators for the MC-808, Tim Hüfken (credited as "artistic collaborator" in the booklet of Téo & Téa) appears instead. On the other hand, Jarre himself is credited in the booklet of Téo & Téa for "drums programming" on the Roland MC-808.

Comment by Jarre on the album In an interview by French Trax magazine in 2010, Jean Michel Jarre said Téo & Téa had been a mistake in his career: C'etait une erreur cet album, une connerie. Sur un plan personnel, j'avais plein de galères et je me suis amusé à jouer avec des samples, comme une récréation. Et on l'a sorti comme album. Mais quand je le réécoute aujourd'hui... Je l'assume, hein, il faut bien assumer ce qu'on fait, mais je ne le referais pas. (This album was a mistake, a dumb thing to do. I had a lot of personal problems at the time, and I kept myself entertained playing with these samples. And then they were released as an album. Oxygene 30th Anniversary Tour On September 19, 2007, Jarre performed his Oxygène album at the Alfacam studios, Lint, Belgium, which was filmed with special 3D cameras. This recording was included on his CD+DVD Oxygene: New Master Recording, celebrating the album's 30th anniversary. The audience consisted of a very small number of invities only. Jarre then performed 10 Oxygene concerts in Paris, from December 12 to December 26, 2007. The concerts took place at the Théâtre Marigny, a small, 1000 seats theatre located in the Champs-Élysées. A high-definition recording of the final show was broadcasted by Belgian channel EXQI, in January 2010

Indoors Arena Tour 2009/10/2011 During 2009, 2010 and 2011 Jarre performed an indoors tour, but with a different concept than his previous Oxygene tour. Jarre performed music from all of his best-selling albums, in a show with cutting-edge digital technology, lasers design and lighting choreography. Jarre at first also conceived HD video projections, but these were later cut from the show, as Jarre stated: "I don't want the audience to think that they're watching a tv show. The visual aspect has to support the music, and not be the soundtrack of the visuals." 10 10 10 Project – 2010 ‘2010′ World Tour Concert at The O2 Arena in London, England on Sunday 10th October 2010, will be streamed ‘LIVE’ on the Internet.

10/10/2010 from 18:30 to 21:00 Electronic pioneer Jean Michel Jarre returns to London with another ambitious concert that mixes sensual dance music with narrative elements. Jarre has, of course, been on and off the road since 1976 and the release of his seminal Oxygene debut which sold 12 million copies and remains unparalleled in French history. In total, Jarre’s music has sold 60 million albums world-wide. But it’s not just his music that seeks to push boundaries – as the artist is equally renowned for his live shows, including a post-Mao concert in China in the ’80s. Indeed, Jarre has broken his own entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest attendance at a concert on three occasions. Obviously, the Albert Hall might not be big enough to see a repeat of this record breaking event. One can only imagine how great this concert is going to be.

The tour will continue in 2012, supposedly in America, Asia and Australia - Light spectacular for Perth Famed French composer, performer and music producer Jean Michel Jarre will bring his outdoor lighting and sound extravaganza to Perth on November 17 in the biggest open-air performance to be staged in the city. Confirming details of Rendez-Vous Perth, organiser Maryanne Bell said yesterday the concert would transform Langley Park, attracting up to 80,000 people at the reserve along with a global TV audience. With Jarre's concerts described as "hijacking an entire city for one night", Ms Bell said people could expect the feature lighting, laser choreography, videos and fireworks synonymous with his work. "Anything Jean Michel does he doesn't do lightly," she said. "It's always big and quite spectacular. Sydney and Melbourne are very annoyed that this is happening in Perth." Described as a pioneer in the electronic, synthpop, ambient and new age genres, Jarre, 63, has staged concerts for up to 3.5 million people. He has performed in locations such as Place de la Concorde in Paris, Egypt's Pyramids of Giza and Monaco, where he performed for Prince Albert's wedding. Ms Bell, an entrepreneur and founder of ITM Productions, predicted the concert would rival the Australia Day Skyworks and the Leeuwin Concert for size and prestige, with international visitors, celebrities and dignitaries expected to fly in. The concert will be free but about 8000 VIP tickets will be sold. Ms Bell said a gala ball would be held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre after the two-hour spectacular. Ms Bell said Jarre "adored Perth" and believed it was a perfect location for his show. The City of Perth will decide on approvals for the event at its council meeting next Tuesday. Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the city "loves the idea". "This event potentially brings a greater global awareness to our city," she said. "He has a huge global following." Ms Bell said she hoped the State Government would support the event, which costs millions of dollars to stage.

It focusses on Jean Michel Jarre`s life and work from the beginning until the two concerts in Lyon and Houston and it gives an insight into the person Jean Michel Jarre. On 144 pages you find, apart from the text, many photos of Jean Michel Jarre as well as concert pictures and various artwork from album covers and early paintings. The book written by Jean-Louis Remilleux was first released in french language in 1987, one year later an english translation was published in the uk. Minor planet number 4422 has been named in honor of the French electronic composer, Jean Michel Jarre. (4422) Jarre = 1942 UA Discovered 1942 Oct. 17 by L. Boyer at Algiers. Named in honor of the French composers Maurice (1924-200 ) and Jean-Michel Jarre (1949- ). Maurice studied composition at the Paris conservatoire, and wrote serial music for concert works and boldly dramatic theatre music, before turning to film music, winning Oscars for his score to 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1963) and for 'Lara's Theme' from 'Doctor Zhivago' (1965). Jean-Michel abandoned his musical studies at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1967 to experiment with electronic music. His first commercial success was 'Oxygene' (1977). Further successful recordings followed, and in 1981 he became the first Western rock artist to play concerts in China. Jean-Michel is best known for his spectacular live shows. Name proposed by G. V. Williams, who made the principal identification involving this object.

About (4422) Jarre (4422) Jarre is in a 3.35-year elliptical orbit around the sun ranging in distance from 274.8 million km (at perihelion, closest point to the sun) to 394.9 million km (at aphelion, furthest point from the sun).The next perihelion passage will occur on 2013 Jan. 9.4 UT. The orbit is inclined by 4.8 degrees to the ecliptic plane (the plane of the earth's orbit about the sun). There is little information on the physical properties of (4422) Jarre. Even its diameter is uncertain--a range of 8 to 19 km is probable. You will need a telescope to see this minor planet as its maximum brightness is some 1/941 of the brightness of the faintest objects that can be seen with the unaided eye. The diagram below show the orbit of (4422) Jarre in relation to the major planets in the inner solar system. This view of the inner solar system is seen from the north ecliptic pole. Jean-Michel Jarre: Music at the service of education French musician and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Jean-Michel Jarre on tour in Sofia announced on 9 October that he intends to give one Euro cent of every concert ticket sold to education around the world. “From this night on I will give one cent of every ticket for the purpose of education. And this will be until the end of my life,” the musician said during his concert in Arena Armeets Sports Palace of the Bulgarian capital.

“From now on until the rest of my life in all my concerts I will do this and I will encourage all my colleagues to do it,” Jarre said. “One cent per ticket is nothing. But if we multiply it by the number of performers, the number of tickets sold for concerts, the seats in cinemas, the newspaper copies sold, the sports events, we will have the budget for education ready tomorrow morning. According to the latest UNESCO figures, some 793 millions adults worldwide do not have basic reading and writing skills, which means that one out of five adults is illiterate and 67,4 millions children are out of school. The number of children who do not attend school regularly or drop out of the educational system is even greater. According to the latest Education For All Global Monitoring Report, 16 billion US dollars would be needed by 2015 to achieve education for all. Jean-Michel Jarre's Favorite Keys E.M.S VCS 3 (1969)

My first synth, Europe’s answer to the American Moog: a Mini versus a Cadillac. Post-war technology had led us to an European electronic sound which was very different to the American sound. The VCS3 was one of the first real synths to be developed from modular research, a technique with which I was already familiar, as it had resulted directly from the equipment that I was working with at the GRM (Le Groupe de Recherches Musicales or, in English, Musical Research Group) with Pierre Schaeffer. I’ve composed a lot of music with this synth, most notably on Oxygène and Equinoxe, although I’d already tried it out on Deserted Palace [one of Jarre’s first projects] and the music that I composed for the Parisian Opera. I still use it on stage now, more than 40 years later. It’s mad to think that this artisan technology is so refined now. When I started out, this synth was my primary tool along with a Farfisa organ and two Revox recorders. Pink Floyd began using this synth around the same time, when they started introducing electronic elements to their music, but they used it as a secondary element in a rock arrangement – whereas for me, it was the primary tool in my sonic palette.

ARP 2600 (1971) This is an American synth which quickly became the best modular/semi-modular synth on the market – different to Moogs, which didn’t have pre-set sounds. When we switched the ARP 2600 on for the first time, we could instantly start to play and shift potentiometers. It cost much less than a Moog, but it was much bigger with an extremely rich sound. I used it a lot on Oxygène and Equinoxe as well as on the albums I made with Christophe such as Les Paradis Perdues (Lost Paradises) and Les Mots Bleus (Blue Words). ARPs are like the Stradivarius or the Steinways of electronic music. They were invented by craftsmen who, today, we’d place on the same level as the luthiers that built violins, clavichords, pianos – all of the acoustic instruments. Interesting fact: all of the electronic instruments from this era more or less disappeared at the start of the 80s with the arrival of the DX7. Or in other words, at the time when the Japanese infiltrated the market of synthesizers with a much more commercial and aggressive vision than that which had dominated during the earlier days of electronic instruments. Today, same as a piano or a saxophone, an ARP remains a classic instrument, and one that we’ll still be using in two centuries time. The current trend for using old synths is like putting a Les Paul 58 or a Fender 52 into the hands of a guitarist who, up until that point, had only ever played an Ibanez or a poor Japanese replica model. From the early 90s, the whole techno scene expanded with plug-ins and emulations of instrumental sounds which were fairly unconvincing digital replicas of analogue sounds. It’s not that I prefer analogue to digital, quite the opposite in fact. I think the two can co-exist perfectly well together and my music is proof of that. But there comes a time when we have to admit that it’s not the same thing. We can’t compare an ARP, which in its day cost 30,000 Francs [4500 euros] with a plug-in that costs 50 euros. It’s a question of sense! After having weighed up the advantages of the virtual, today we’re realising that we’re made of flesh and blood and we have an absolute need for an emotional and tactile relationship with our instruments.

ARP 2500 (1969)

This is the big brother of the ARP 2600, created to compete with the modular Moog. Pete Townshend of The Who was one of the first musicians to use it in Europe. The ARP 2500 is the huge machine that we can hear in “Baba O’Reilly” playing that well-known sequence which would become so essential to The Who’s sound. It’s an electronic sound, not the sound of a guitar! I try to approach people with a similar rapport with synthesizers to my own, such as Pete Townshend or Peter Gabriel, both of whom were amongst the first musicians to possess a Fairlight, along with myself.

FAIRLIGHT CMI (1979)

The Fairlight was the first instrument that I worked with which was directly linked to the training I’d received at GRM under Pierre Schaeffer, electroacoustic music, or what we’d later call ‘sampling’. With the Fairlight, we could record and sample any sound – a natural, urban or domestic noise – play it on a piano and create percussion, a choir, the sounds of chords, a constructive element of music, improbable sounds of which we didn’t know the origin. It’s an instrument with a very lo-fi sound and with a lot of charm and warmth, a graininess that makes us think of the compositions of Bernard Herrmann or of the aesthetic that we find in films from the 30s like Metropolis. It was significant in determining the sound of Peter Gabriel and the sound of the Real World label, as well as my own. It can be heard throughout my back catalogue, on Champs Magnetiques (Magnetic Fields) but especially on Zoolook, which was made entirely on the Fairlight. Oxygène and Zoolook are two very different albums on the sonic map, because as we know, it’s the tool that defines the style and not the other way around. The Fairlight is an instrument which immediately struck me as extraordinary when it first appeared on the market, because it brought to mind the way that I approached electroacoustic music when I started out – that’s to say with two decks, some scissors and some cellotape. For Zoolook, I remember recording with Marcus Miller, one of the best – if not the best – bassists in the world. In fact, I sampled all of his parts with his help. Passed through a Fairlight, the sound was completely transformed; the machine twisted and modified everything. I also sampled the songs of Eskimo's and African tribes, chiefly considering their sonic qualities rather than ethnic because that wasn’t the point, and then integrated these sounds in Zoolook. Peter Gabriel was very focussed on discovering new kinds of music by chopping up parts and integrating them into tracks with more of a rock, pop or electro tonality. I think this approach throughout this period determined and generated the entire philosophy of sampling, which a few years later, would become DJ culture. What makes me laugh today is that the Fairlight used to record onto these enormous tapes that were about the same size as a magazine, and on which you could hold about 20 sounds, each of a second in length. It’s archaic when you think of today’s technology (one standard USB stick is able to hold 10,000 Fairlight tapes worth of material), but the limits of this machine awarded it an extraordinary poetry. In five years time, I think we’ll be rediscovering this instrument.

Roland JD-800 (1991)

This was the next synth to follow the DX7 philosophy and the approach initiated by Japanese synths, which was going to financially sink all of the American makers. I included it in my list because it was one of the first polyphonic Japanese synths that managed to resemble an analogue synth, although what I hated about the DX7 was that it left you thinking that electronic music only aimed to imitate the sounds of acoustic instruments. With the JD-800, you could modify the sound, as you can on an ARP or a Moog, but with a Japanese sound quality, which in some respects, is more refined. I used this synth a lot on Chronology and Revolution. These are the albums which spoke to people the least, but which were important in my career as they marked a period of flux where I still had a foot in analogue and another in what would go on to become digital.

MEMORY MOOG (1982)

The first analogue polyphonic synth. Until then, modular synths such as the VCS3 and the ARP were monophonic. If you wanted a polyphonic effect, you had to play four different sounds at the same time. It’s a practice that’s lost today, which is a shame because it meant you had to compose in the same way that we’d write for a string quartet: violin, alto, cello, double bass. With the Memorymoog, and other synths that came out around the same time, in one fell swoop, we could make complete chords, and that changed everything. For better and for worse. As a result, we ceased to compose electronic music the classic way, as Wendy Carlos did. The Memorymoog was the 8 Moog in the same form but with a new and different attraction: we could store the sounds we created. Before, we had to get our pencil and paper out and write down all of the operations required to produce a sound, but it was never really possible to reproduce the original sound again from the notes we’d made. From this point onwards, you could re-find the sound in its original state, even a year after you’d made it.

RMI Keyboard Computer (1974)

This is an instrument that was created in the 70s and which was revolutionary as it was the first digital synth in a period where everything was analogue. In the electronic music world of the 70s, digital had no place at all. The RMI functioned according to the principle of additive synthesis, whereas the analogue synths were based on subtractive synthesis. To simplify, additive synthesis is like an organ, meaning that you can add frequencies to each other and add layers in the same way that on an organ, you can add 32 pedals, then 16, then 8, then 4, which are actually octaves, or thirds of octaves or quintets. It’s a technique that was used heavily on Deserted Palace and on the track “Oxygène 5”, where the entire sequence is made using the RMI. It created a very different sound to anything else that could be heard at the time, precisely because the digital edge added a certain coolness. This synth was to music what the film Tron was to cinema at the time.

EMINENT 310 (1970)

This synth defines my sound, from Les Mots Bleus by Christophe and the songs of Patrick Juvet, right up to Oxygène and Equinoxe, where I used it heavily. To this day, I still use it frequently. Along with the VCS3, this is one of the fundamental instruments of my music. It’s an organ developed by the Dutch who were the first to figure out how to create chords from electronic sounds. It was from this first string ensemble that the Solina emerged, which is nowadays better known than the Eminent, even if the Eminent is three Solinas together with a notably richer sound. The Eminent can be heard on Oxygène and Equinoxe, adding that gliding, phased feel. The background story to this sound is that it’s the VCS3 and the Eminent passed through a Smalltone, a phase pedal for guitars, which created this very opulent sound similar to that of chords, but of course much more electro.

Teenage Engineering OP-1 (2011)

A little new one that came out less than a year ago and was invented in Sweden [by Teenage Engineering, a company founded by 2003 Academy pariticpant David Eriksson]. It’s a synth which doesn’t even seem like a synth at all – it’s tiny and looks like a Casio toy, but hidden inside is a very sophisticated machine, created using military technology. It’s 100% digital, but defines something completely new in its size and transportability. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen something as interesting, flexible and creative as this. And importantly, its inventors have reintroduced a notion which had been desperately lacking: humour. We have to remember that Moogs, ARPs and all of the first synths had been created by raging madmen, who created completely unreasonable and financially hazardous instruments. The inventors of this synth sold their OP-1 in drips and drabs on the internet, and the instructions are in Japanese to throw us off the scent. I met them after my tour in Sweden – the whole team came backstage and we jammed together. I chose this synth to show that any instrument, from no matter what time, can have a completely timeless value. I’m sure that musicians will still be using the OP-1 in 50 years.

MELLOTRON (1963)

This is another mythical instrument from the electroacoustic scene, since it was one of the first samplers well ahead of the Fairlight. What was interesting with the Mellotron was that it was conceived at a time (the 60s) when the philosophy of sampling wasn’t on the agenda at all. It was, once again, the idea of a luminary who asked himself how to play chords electronically. The principal is to record a choir in a studio onto tape and then to install all sorts of little tape recorders with tapes that last seven seconds to create the notes on a piano. The Mellotron is a kind of small piano which, when you press a key, places the stylus against the tape, releasing a tape which will be read by the head during the seven seconds. That allows you to have a whole range of sounds. When you play a Mellotron, you feel like you’re listening to soundtracks from silent films from the 30s, as there’s this whining contortion that would go on to define the sound of loads of Beatles, Moody Blues and Procol Harum tracks. In fact, pop and rock in the 60s would use this instrument to record choirs with a vintage, retro feel. It’s the sound of the 40s adapted for the music of the 60s.

The keys to my success: Jean Michel Jarre Oxygène was turned down by all the record companies. It was like a UFO ? it was made in the middle of the disco and punk eras and the record companies said, "What is it? No singer, no proper song titles? And, on top of that, it's French!" Even my mum asked, "Why are you giving your music the name of a gas?" Yet people talk of Oxygène now as my "masterpiece". When it became such a success, it was strange ? a very exciting period and kind of innocent. You find you have a lot of new friends around you and it's almost as if they want the success to continue more than you do. Making my music is like being a chef. It's no coincidence that Oxygène was recorded in my kitchen in Paris.I had to find the right ingredients, bringing everything to the right temperature. don't like the preconceived idea about electronic music that it is cold, futuristic or robotic. I want my music to sound warm, human and organic. I'm not a scientist working in a laboratory ? I'm more like a painter, Jackson Pollock for example, mixing colour and light, experimenting with textures. I'm really playing those instruments: I don't just click a mouse and sit back. They are not fake instruments. The beauty is that you can create the sound of the Moon, the sound of light. Nothing is repeated. It's music that breathes. To me, the original VCS3 synthesizer is like a Stradivarius. All these old analogue instruments are very poetic.I have a huge emotional relationship with them. My first synthesizer was the VCS3. I got it in Bristol in the late Sixties, long before Pink Floyd used them. I had to sell an acoustic guitar and an old reel-to-reel tape recorder to raise the money. You can do fantastic things with modern computers but you cannot use them in the same intuitive, spontaneous way you can a VCS3. You also have the Minimoog, which is very famous, and a Dutch invention called the Eminent, which was patented in the late Sixties. The sound of Oxygène is based on the fantastic string effects of the Eminent. To play some of these old instruments you need the Force to be with you. The theramin, for example ? it's totally intuitive. It looks like a Thirties radio with two antennae ? just by moving your hands towards the

antennae you control the volume and the pitch, producing this fantastic sound like a soprano vocal. Stravinsky used one, as did the Beach Boys on Good Vibrations. It's very tricky to play. I own some of the world's most unusual synthesizers. They include the ARP 2600, a huge modular synthesizer. That's the instrument Pete Townshend created The Who's Baba O'Riley on. There are only about 30 left. Back in the Seventies we had a romantic, poetic vision of the future, like it was in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It felt as if everything was still ahead of us. Today, it is all behind us. That is not to say that my music is attached to sci-fi. I see my music as more attached to the biosphere than the stratosphere. I collect robots. They're mainly Japanese, American and especially Russian ? small robots, big robots and old toy robots made between 1910 and the Fifties. That period was all about futurism, from the art of Kandinsky to crazy guys building strange robots and sci-fi creatures, utopian-type things. In those days there were lots of dreamers about the future.I got into all that. Going to the US or China and hearing your music on the radio is like signing your soul to the devil. You can start to lose your own identity when your image becomes bigger than who you actually are. There are so many temptations, so many excesses, it can kill you. America is the worst. I was voted People magazine's Man Of The Year in the Seventies, and the women? well, you have to be clear in your mind what these things mean or your brain will implode. Pope John Paul II had big feet. The first thing I noticed when I met him was the size of his shoes. I thought to myself, "My God, this man has his head in the sky but his feet solidly on the ground." I'll never forget the day of Princess Diana's funeral. We had been quite close friends, and on that day I was doing a concert in Moscow for 3.5 million people. I knew she was keen on one song I'd written called Souvenir Of China. So I decided to dedicate it to her and ask the audience for a minute's silence. You can imagine the scene in Moscow with more than three million noisy people, the amount of vodka, craziness everywhere? But the entire city remained silent. It was so moving that everyone started crying. The tears were running down my face so much I couldn't even start to play again. Even now, just talking about it makes me emotional. Why do I play these big events? First, it's the fact that electronic instruments are not really made for live performance, so long tours are not feasible. And I became inspired by Italian opera, working with carpenters, painters, costumiers and, in my case, video artists, light-show specialists and architects. Also, because I've always considered my music to be attached to the immediate environment, I wanted to perform outdoors, to hijack one whole place for a night ? something where, as an artist, you have no second chance. At the Place de la Concorde [in 1979], one guy came up afterwards ? he had a long beard like Fidel Castro's ? and he said, "I've never seen anything like that before in my life." I thanked him and someone said, "Do you know who that was? Mick Jagger" My favourite concert nearly didn't happen. I thought it was a joke when Lech Walesa phoned me to play at Gdansk in 2005. I just didn't believe him. The concert was a kind of Blade Runner experience because it was in exactly that spot that the world had changed, leading to the eventual collapse of the Soviet system.

Arthur C Clarke thought aliens would respond to my music. He told me, "We must do something in outer space ? perhaps a concert on the Moon." He thought it would be a good point of contact. My favourite thing to spend money on used to be cars ? especially old British and American ones. I had a Bugatti, which I bought in England, an old XJ140 Jaguar and a Cadillac Eldorado, which I bought in the US. I had cars all over the world. I drove them all, including the Bugatti. I was keener, though, on the XJ140 and the Cadillac. I'd put the family in them and off we'd go. Of course, you had to stop from garage to garage, because they kept breaking down, but I didn't care. Oxygène made me rich ? but not as rich as you might think. Back then managers and record companies were getting too much money. Having said that, I was able to buy a large house in Paris where I built my own studio, plus a house in London. It has been very moving playing Oxygène again. In Paris I was playing to small audiences of only about 500. I love using all the old equipment. It's been quite an experience.
