EDITOR'S Letter
We Can Do This! “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. There are not enough words to describe how thankful we all are to the individuals who work on the front lines of any disaster. We salute each and every one of our medical personnel, first responders, grocery workers and countless others, all bravely doing their jobs to keep us all fighting to move past this dreadful period of time in our lives. I personally joined an army of other women and men sewing masks to help provide extra protection for these amazing individuals. I also had to make an emergency trip to two different dental offices and the process was made better by caring staff members, the dentists that helped me, and a four-year-old playing his guitar for me while his working mom tended to my tooth. The tears of thanks have never been so sweet. What we can offer is a few moments to read something uplifting. We are always extremely proud of our students in Brevard, but with everything that has happened, anyone and everyone associated with Brevard Public Schools should be applauded and celebrated for their tireless work completing the school year. We also applaud our Senior Class of 2020 and we know you have sacrificed many beloved traditions. Stay positive, as I know your family, friends and teachers are still going to give you a celebration you deserve, even if it may not be in the traditional way. On a personal note, I have some happy news. My little sister was supposed to travel to New York this June to marry her fiancé and all the plans unraveled because of the coronavirus. She asked if I would become ordained to perform the ceremony if she was able to secure a wedding license. I did. Although the ceremony was not what she had planned, the “socially distant” family members were able to view and listen from their cars as I presided over the ceremony on March 28th and I am happy to present Mr. and Mrs. Jerry and Angela Hobbs in the photo below. The community has come together to help each other and continues to work together to stay vigilant to all the precautions we all must adhere to. We can still celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. Hey, it may not be the usual way but stay positive and smile, laugh, cry and toast each other. We can do this and we can continue to find ways to make our memories about this time be positive in some small way. Stay healthy everyone.

Happy greetings that go beyond a card.
It was a beautiful afternoon!

ADIES AND GENTLEMEN, VIERA VISION IS PROUD TO PRESENT--DRUMROLL, PLEASE---THE STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS WHO HELP MAKE VIERA AND ALL OF BREVARD SUCH A VERY SPECIAL PLACE!
Our annual Bragging Rights story, one of the more popular features of our magazine, puts the spotlight squarely on the many achievements of our wonderful students and the educators who guide them. A community can only be as good as its people, and Viera is fortunate to be home to so many of tomorrow’s leaders, young men and women who are passionate about what they do, be it sports or science or the arts. Behind every one of them are parents and teachers who are dedicated to encouraging and nurturing these youngsters from the time they take their first timid steps into a kindergarten classroom to their joyous moment when they stride proudly across the stage to receive their high school diploma. We are delighted to share with you the accomplishments of our schools and their students and wish all of them a fantastic summer and a fabulous school year ahead. Congratulations, you’ve earned plenty of Bragging Rights! We can’t wait to see what you will accomplish next year!

LET THE SCHOOL BELL RING Adrienne Schwab grew up along with the Space Coast’s educational system. “Brevard County was my home for my educational journey,” said Schwab, appointed principal for the highly anticipated new Viera Elementary School. She is pumped up about the state-of-the-art school she will be heading come August. If there ever was a contest to find a cheerleader for Brevard Public Schools, Adrienne would be a tough contender to beat, for she knows the system up close and personal. Kindergarten and first grade saw her at Port Malabar Elementary. From second to sixth grade, she attended Lockmar Elementary before graduating to Southwest Middle School for seventh to ninth grade. She earned her high school diploma from Palm Bay High School. Even when she left for college, she didn’t stray far. “I graduated from UCF with my bachelor’s in education,” she said. The start of her teaching career took her back to the familiar school grounds at Lockmar, where she taught fourth grade in 2002. By 2007, Schwab was headed to Meadowlane Intermediate to teach sixth graders. “I taught sixth grade for four years, was a teacher on assignment for one year, completed my master’s degree in educational leadership and became assistant principal at Meadowlane Intermediate in 2012,” she explained. By 2015, Adrienne became principal at Meadowlane, a position in which she remained until December 2019, when she was named principal for Viera’s newest public school. She can’t wait until the school bells ring next year. “We’re all very excited about the new school,” said Schwab.

Duran Golf Club HONORED BY
Audubon Certification
14
T
HERE ARE MORE THAN 12,000 GOLF COURSES IN THE UNITED STATES COVERING ALMOST 1.6 MILLION ACRES OF TURF, SAND, WOODS, AND CLUBHOUSE SPACE ACROSS THE NATION. THEY ARE SMALL AND LARGE, 9-HOLERS TO 18-HOLERS TO MULTI-COURSE BEHEMOTHS. THEY ARE COMMUNITY COURSES AND PRIVATE CLUBS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. AND BEYOND WHAT SOME COMMON BELIEFS TRY TO CONVINCE US, THEY ARE ALL IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR HUMANS TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THE LAND.
In our own community, Duran Golf Club is one of a fraternity of only 10% of courses in the country to earn a certification in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP). To thank for that designation are, in no particular order, because they each credit each other for the success of the 6-year effort, Duran Superintendent, Jeff Von Eschen, Senior Manager of Club Operations, Duran Golf Club, Dave Tomczak, former General Manager, Duran Golf Club, and two very significant volunteers from the community, Dr. Jim and Karen Papritan. Simply put, the ACSP is an environmental education and certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment, preserve the historical embrace of nature in the game of golf, and communicate the importance of these efforts within their communities. “That was the main purpose of becoming Audubon
certified,” said Jeff Von Eschen, Senior Manager of Club Operations, Duran Golf Club. “To change the public perception of what a golf course is.” In many communities and municipalities around the country, especially in and around cities, the disturbing trend today is sale and/or redevelopment of these green spaces. Local leaders from Portland, Oregon to Washington, D.C. are questioning the value of their golf courses and rethinking the space for new uses. The ACSP gives leaders in the golf industry the tools to prove the case for golf and golf courses as a benefit to both the community and the environment together. “We’re making inroads,” Von Eschen said. “A. Duda & Sons and The Viera Company entrusted us with a vast expanse of green space and we want to, the best way we can, be environmentally responsible.” The simple truth of the matter is, when run properly, a golf course can be an integral link in the way water is filtered from residential and commercial development, safe havens for wildlife and educational opportunities for young and old alike, all in addition to a role as an open green recreational space benefitting everyone. "Because, in the end, a golf course is also a business, and must maintain a healthy economic posture to be able to be committed to all of these things,” said Dave Tomczak, former General Manager, Duran Golf Club. “The footprint that we leave from a business perspective is much better than most businesses.”

AUDUBON INTERNATIONAL HISTORY Audubon International has its roots in the Audubon Society of New York State, first established by Theodore Roosevelt, Frank Chapman, and John Burroughs in 1887. The organization was re-established nearly 100 years later, in 1987, as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit group dedicated to environmental education and sustainable resource management. By 1996, the organization had rebranded to Audubon International with a mission “to create environmentally sustainable environments where people live, work, and play.” A SIX YEAR JOURNEY The journey to Audubon Certification began some six years ago. True, the certification from ACSP is not as simple as paying a membership fee. It is an involved process that includes a substantial amount of work on the part of the golf club or course as well as numerous site visits from Audubon International to confirm all standards are met. There are six pillars to the program that need to either be proven or established by each certified course that the entire Duran staff dedicated themselves to for many hours over the past 6 years. 1. Each course or club must demonstrate leadership among golf courses for their environmentally-responsible management practices. 16
Thanks to being an integral part of the Viera Master Plan, Duran was a few steps ahead on this point. The engineering of the community included Duran within its plan for moving and filtering storm water through the community. It’s usually only engineers and environmentalists who understand how much forethought goes into safe drainage of water off of hard property surfaces like parking lots and roads. When it rains, all that water mixes with whatever substances have been sitting on those surfaces, like motor oil, gasoline, trash and waste, animal and wildlife-related materials. All of that needs to be drained and filtered through a series of natural processes from the high areas to ultimately safely released into the native waterways. In the case of Duran and Viera, The Viera Company’s plan took all of this into account from the start. Every retention basin that holds water, every detention basin that slowly releases water, every natural stream, pond, lake, and drainage space on the Duran property helps filter water on its journey back into the waterways. “We’re actually improving the quality of the water as it flows through here. We’re actually part of the filtration system,” said Tomczak. “It’s important to understand a golf course is GOOD for the ecosystem. People think that the water that leaves the golf course is polluted water, but in actuality, it’s cleaner than when it came in.”
2. Each course or club must show a strong commitment to long-term environmental stewardship. Beyond just the engineering, though, Von Eschen points to environmentally sustainable practices used at Duran as another way of being a leader in the field. Chemical, fertilizer and water reduction are all systematic processes in place at Duran that help protect the property, improve the land, defend the wildlife, and yes, make the golf better for the players. Von Eschen says all of the sprinkler heads and the irrigation system have been optimized over time to make more economical use of water to keep the turf at its healthiest without over-watering. In fact, watering too much, while it may make the grass greener for time, actually can be problematic for the health of the turf. 3. Each course or club must provide valuable green space for people and wildlife. Von Eschen points to some of the ongoing projects he and his staff are managing including putting up bird boxes and bat boxes to encourage an environment that’s friendly to wildlife. There are natural areas that leave the animals to their own devices like the one between the 9th and 17th tee boxes. There are area butterfly gardens like the one near the 16th tee and bird boxes to attract bluebirds, swallows, wrens, and wood ducks all over the course. If you’ve ever played golf, you will be familiar with the feeling of seeing some animal that you either know well or can’t quite identify that takes your mind off your game for just a moment and allows you to drift off into the joy of being outdoors. These policies are both good for the animals and good for the humans as well. 4. Each course or club must participate with other cooperative sanctuaries across North America in providing habitats for migratory bird populations. There are numerous species, like the White Pelican, who call Duran home during specific times of the year. To that end, so-called “Buffer Zones” have been established between some of the water bodies and the in-play parts of the course. For his part, Tomczak explains just how enthusiastic and encouraging he is about all of this effort coming to a peak with the award of the certification. He believes that all of the courses in our county should want to be a part of this [certification] program. But, he notes, even the courses that aren’t a part of this program are implementing some of the methods, habits, and policies just because it’s good business, too. The Savannahs Golf Club in Merrit Island was owned by the county, and later passed ownership to a private group. 17
They are just starting to understand that they have this certification. And while the certification is good for three years. Audubon International must come out to do a new site inspection every six years to keep the certification active. Von Eschen and Dr. Papritan are working with Audubon International and The Savannahs so they can continue with their certification and keep two certified courses in the county. Like the old saying “if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together,” Tomczak and Von Eschen, both, note how much they are communicating with their fellow professionals around the country through Audubon International, their own professional membership groups, and directly. 5. Each course or club must conserve natural resources for future generations. Every effort the Duran team, including volunteers from the community, has been making has been under the banner of a commitment to continuing the effort. Sustainability is the operative word, not just environmentally, but in terms of continuing the effort. The Audubon Certification is a proud moment, but maintaining that status is an ongoing effort. 6. Each course or club must serve as a demonstration site to educate golfers, the public, and golf course professionals about golf course management and the benefits of golf courses. There are several programs being instituted at Duran that fall into the category of education. Efforts range from the simple, like signs labeling wildlife habitats and brochures and conversation among golfers about the importance Duran places on being an Audubon Sanctuary, to the more aggressive and comprehensive, like actively engaging the school district for field trips to talk and learn about environmentalism, golf course architecture, and sustainable turf grass management. “It’s the ongoing things,” said Tomczak. “We’re working with the charter school and Viera High School to use the course as a classroom.” The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has learning program called The First Green, which brings in schools to utilize the golf course as a living classroom. “We will show them environmental planning and wildlife management,” said Von Eschen. “We teach them chemical use and reaction, give them activities to do, like testing water quality, sifting soils to see what it’s made of.” Duran will plan to host to a series of bird watching events and educational seminars in the future. Community members interested in learning more about what’s been going on and how they can get involved should contact the Duran clubhouse directly. And they both point to the opportunity of golf industry learning and golf instruction through the Duran learning 18
center with Head Golf Pro Matt Morrison and Director of Instruction Justin Blazer. The learning and depth of education is on multiple levels. “When you can make those connections,” Tomczak says, “It’s not just helpful for the business or the school, but for the community as well.” The staff at Duran and everyone who participated in the effort are overwhelmingly proud of being recognized by Audubon International. The final submission for consideration ended up being a binder of more than 1,000 pages that even transformed the way Audubon executes on these certifications. “They’re looking at what they do in the future differently because of what Dr. Papritan and Jeff did here,” Tomczak said. There’s an enormous amount of documentation and accountability and future-looking involved in the entire process. “It has completely changed the way I do my job,” Von Eschen said. WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS While an unsettling number of golf courses have shut down or redeveloped in recent years, all is not doom and gloom. There are places where communities are embracing golf as a community benefit and coming to a new understanding of the role of a golf course and golf course space in their lives. It is through efforts like the Audubon Sanctuary program and the active involvement of golf leaders like Von Eschen and Tomczak and volunteers like the Papritans that a new understanding of green space, golf courses, and sanctuary lands is coming to people who may have never considered golf as important to their lives. Like so many things in life, things don’t happen by accident. It takes vision. And curiosity. And a will to do well and to be understood. And that’s how we change the world.
HOW THE AUDUBON SOCIETY BEGAN… DID YOU KNOW?
Established in 1887, the Audubon Society was established for the preservation of the North American bird population that was being decimated by plume hunters all in the name of fashion. Ladies’ hats and clothing were trimmed with these birds’ glamorous feathers. Ironically, the founder of the Audubon Society, George Bird Grinnell, was not your typical animal activist. Grinnell ran “Forest and Stream,” a hunting and fishing journal. So, why would he be concerned about the use of birds’ feathers?
It was the outright slaughter of birds for their feathers alone that disturbed Grinnell, along with many others. Birds that flocked together and settled near the water, such as shorebirds and migratory birds, were targeted the most by hunters. These birds were injured en masse and at random and many times left chicks orphaned. Grinnell was able to publish articles against plume hunting in his magazine. In fact, Grinnell was so taken by this cause, he began another publication entitled “Audubon Magazine,” in honor of the ornithologist and wildlife illustrator John James Audubon. This magazine included ornithologist biographies, bird histories and stories about feathered pets, along with the platform against plume hunting. Although the magazine had much success, Grinnell could not keep pace and shut down publication in 1888. By 1896, Boston socialite Harriet Hemenway began her own society against this still-rampant practice of plume hunting. Hemenway brought a group of the city’s elite together with naturalists and others interested in ornithology, forming the Massachusetts Audubon Society for the protection of birds. By the early 1900s, the society had expanded across the country, unified under a national committee, and encouraged federal and state legislation against plume hunting. The Audubon Society was also instrumental in saving many species of birds from possible extinction, such as the American and snowy egrets, terns, gulls and waterfowl.

A BRAND NEW HOMEBUYING EXPERIENCE VIERA BUILDERS IS LEADING THE WAY FOR LOCAL BUILDERS HAT IS IT THAT MAKES ONE BUILDER BETTER THAN ANOTHER? FOR MARY MEAD, VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AT VIERA BUILDERS, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. AS THE HOMEBUILDING ARM OF THE VIERA COMPANY, VIERA BUILDERS HAS BEEN BUILDING BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED HOMES FOR 15 YEARS. VIERA IS CONSISTENTLY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE TOP 25 MASTER-PLANNED COMMUNITIES IN THE UNITED STATES.
W
In that time, Viera Builders has built nearly 75% of the homes across Central Viera. “We offer a series of product lines that have predetermined flex options and others that feature the Our Plans, Your Ideas concept, where the home buyer has significant input into customization. This is unique in a production builder," Mead says. She is quick to credit the talented team, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. “Another key to the builder’s success is that it offers floor plans with flexibility,” she added. But it’s the approach Mead and the Viera Builders 22

team will take that creates the difference that resonates with customers. The company does extensive research before opening a new community. They work hard to understand what buyers are looking for. “When we start a new community, we do a lot of research on the demographics and the psychographics involved,” Mead said. “The demographics tell us the ‘who’. The psychographics tell us the ‘why’, and things like how far they’re willing to drive for particular services or amenities such as churches, doctors and shopping.” “If we get this right,” Mead says, “It’s a home run.” PERSONALIZED CHOICES After gaining an understanding of what each community needs, it’s the experience of creating the home that moves to the forefront. And Viera Builders is doing some very interesting things to make that experience personal and exciting for their customers. Viera Builders offer 12 product lines, 7 of which have “flex” options. These options are created working with architects, interior designers, and our own customer feedback. We make these predetermined options easy to select and envision with our new interactive floor plans. Let’s say you want to add a mother-in-law suite. You can make those changes either in The Viera Builders sales office, or on the website by selecting the option, which will then populate right on the floor plan. It takes the guesswork out of all the structural changes. In then communities that offer Our Plan, Your Ideas, once a buyer enters the initial contract phase, buyers can redline the floorplans of their homes themselves. They can make decisions such as “we need an extra two feet of space in the living room,” or “we need to maximize the cabinet space in the kitchen.” “We let our customers do quite a bit,” Mead says. “There’s a limit because it’s not completely custom design, but they have room to make the choices that fit their lifestyle. It’s an opportunity to create a truly customized home to fit your family without the true custom home price. We work hard to offer personalized choices.” Mead really lights up when discussing design options. She comes from an interior design background and embraces the opportunity to work through designs in the CAD (computer aided design) system. She’s able to look at the floor plan layouts and apply a sort of “livability” approach to each home. Families with multiple children, for example, need larger living room spaces and those spaces need to be a configuration that accommodates family-friendly furniture, she explains, casting herself in the role of a “strategic problem solver.” “I love it,” she says, “I like to identify problems and solve them for people.” SOLVING PROBLEMS It’s an approach she brings to her interactions with customers and team members alike. She quotes her longtime Orlando industry colleague and Viera Builders
“WE’RE BRINGING A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE TO THE BUYER. TO REALLY START TO VISUALIZE HOW THEY’RE GOING TO FEEL IN THEIR NEW HOME.” MARY MEAD, VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AT VIERA BUILDERS
President Bill Moore: “A company is only as good as the company/manager it employs.” “You have to be accountable,” she says. “And you need to be able to empower team members beside and below you to take care of problems.” A Michigander by birth and a Floridian since the 6th grade, Mead is an emphatic believer in the idea that when managers do better, people do better. In the rare instance when something gets completed incorrectly, for example, Viera Builders goes out of their way to correct the issue. “We don’t look to fix things for people. We set out to do it right in the first place,” Mead says. “It’s never the problem that gets people into trouble, it’s how we handle the problem. And if we handle it right, we build more trust and in the end, everybody is happy.” NEW TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHING A new Viera Builders website just recently launched and that will enable Mead’s sales team to be much more interactive. Several of the sales offices already have this technology, and our design studio will soon include large touch screens where customers can pull up and manage their floor plans and options in real time. They’ll be able to look at elevations, paint palettes and view the property with options such as more or fewer bedrooms or a gourmet kitchen added. Buyers will be able to truly see what the new home will look like with bronze window frames instead of white, or with different roof colors. There are multiple options from which to choose and they can save their choices, send it to themselves or even post it on Instagram. “We’re bringing a different experience to the buyer,” Mead says. “To really start to visualize how they’re going to feel in their new home.” Mead calls it an effort to bring an HGTV experience to the customer. “Most builders are way behind on this,” she says. “It’s a big, exciting change for us and will increase buyer satisfaction in the end.” 23
NEW COMMUNITIES With new communities opening as well as new sections of existing communities being developed, the Viera Builders team will be keeping busy for quite a while. The company’s reach extends across eight communities: Loren Cove offers paired and multi-family villas, where community landscaping, exterior paint and roofs are maintained. The community also features a community clubhouse and workout facility. Reeling Park offers three product lines: The Sagrada, The Castillo and the San Marco collection, with a fourth product line debuting later this year. These collections are all customizable using the Our Plans, Your Ideas process. There’s a community basketball court, dog park, playground and sand volleyball for outdoor activities. Sierra Cove, the newest “coving community,” at completion will feature miles of trails, corn hole, inline hockey and more. These floor plans offer thoughtful “flex” options for personalization. Stonecrest features Tuscan and Mediterranean inspired architecture. Stonecrest offers buyers the opportunity to customize with Viera Builders exclusive, Our Plans, Your Ideas process. Trasona Cove East and West feature the innovative coving method of community planning offering increased open space for home sites. These communities offer three community parks, communal gathering spots, pickle ball

courts and a multitude of opportunities to keep both parents and kids busy outside. Trasona West offers HOA-maintained landscaping as well. Kerrington features Tuscan and Mediterranean inspired architecture. Kerrington offers buyers the opportunity to customize with Viera Builders exclusive Our Plans, Your Ideas process. Arrivas Village features the Reeling Park San Marco and Castillo collections showcasing Spanish Colonial architecture. Arrivas Village also boasts its own private pool and community center. “We are in our final stages of closing out Arrivas Village with four homes and Kerrington with two homes remaining,” said Mead. “It’s a great time to be a part of the group,” Mead said. “We had a very exciting 2019 and we’re thrilled with how we’re doing. We’re growing. We’re incorporating a lot of innovative and exciting things.” Stonecrest, opened in 2019, is already half sold-out, and Sierra Cove, the newest of the neighborhoods, opened in February with many repeat buyers from our older communities. “We are excited to debut our new models and hope to have some great events planned for those communities,” she said.

HEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, WE SHARE OUR STRENGTHS WITH OTHERS TO GET THROUGH THE HARD TIMES. FOR TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFÉ®, THE STRENGTH LIES IN, WELL, MAKING SMOOTHIES, AND LISA MORRISON OF THE LOCAL VIERA FRANCHISE WAS ALL TOO HAPPY TO DONATE AND DELIVER 100 OF THE YUMMY TREATS TO THE NURSES AT VIERA HOSPITAL, STAFF AT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND TO BREVARD FIRE STATION 48.
2016 Coneen joined forces with Buzz Underill of Squid Lips to create Hospitality Life, a nonprofit that provides a lifeline to industry employees who have fallen on hard times. With the pandemic, Coneen and Underill have their work cut out for them as they work to serve those who have served us, the 10,000+ recently unemployed food and beverage workers in Brevard. The organization has multiple restaurants each day preparing hot meals for hospitality workers in need. They can feed individuals or families a nutritionally balanced meal for under two dollars per person. Coneen and Underill are challenging the community to join them with “virtual tips” made through Facebook and GoFundMe links available at HospitalityLife.org. For the entire community, Florida Today, with headquarters on Viera Blvd., has made all stories related to COVID-19 free to read. The Viera Company is focusing their monetary donations on food and shelter for local families in need during the crisis along with their parent company A. Duda and Sons, Inc. Donations include Brevard Schools, local food banks and multiple critical needs hot spots. Be it news, meals or just a refreshing smoothie, the gifts of Viera area businesses have helped brighten the day for both the heroes who are risking their lives to keep us safe, as well as for the rest of us, who all have been affected in one way or another by the pandemic.
The donations were part of #InItTogether, a nationwide challenge by Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s parent company to distribute 100,000 of the healthy drinks to healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The brand's focus has been on supporting all communities where our franchise owners and the cafe employees live and work. "In cafes across the country, the Tropical Smoothie Cafe family is working tirelessly to support our local communities, which are currently facing unprecedented hardship," said Charles Watson, CEO of Tropical Smoothie Cafe, LLC. To reach the goal of 100,000 smoothies, each of the 830 Tropical Smoothie Cafes were asked to donate at least 100. As of March 27, Tropical Smoothie Cafe franchise has delivered approximately 20,000 smoothies across over 20 states and over 30 markets. Viera's Tropical Smoothie Cafe was in the vanguard of participating locations. They were not the only business to step forth to make life a little brighter for Health First medical heroes. Among the Viera businesses donating their talent, time or treasure were Viera Builders, W&J Construction, Amici’s Restaurant, Coldstone Creamery, Taco Bell, Bella Luna Restaurant, CVS Pharmacy Viera, Remax Aerospace, Space Coast Credit Union, Chickfil-a Viera and Domino’s Pizza. It was not only medical frontliners who have received an assist from local businesses. Chris Conneen of Pizza Gallery & Grill and 28 North, both at The Avenue Viera, has been feeding people for three decades, so in 27
connection starts here.

F YOU ARE LOOKING TO UPDATE YOUR YARD WITH A FEW NEW PLANTINGS, WE HOPE YOU TAKE A MOMENT TO REFER TO THE FLORIDA-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPING(™) PROGRAM (FFL) ON THE UF|IFAS WEBSITE THAT ENCOURAGES THE USE OF LOWMAINTENANCE PLANTS AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES.
The FFL program has nine principles and they are the key to the continued success of our Indian River Lagoon clean up efforts. 1. RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE: Quality plants include those that are diverse and require little supplemental water, fertilizer or pesticides. 2. WATER EFFICIENTLY: Grouping plants that need similar amounts of water is one of the best ways to conserve water. Check irrigation systems regularly and repair breaks, leaks and the direction of their spray. 3. FERTILIZE APPROPRIATELY: Slow-release nitrogen and little to no phosphorous is the best way to protect our lagoon. Never fertilize within 10 feet of any waterbody. 4. MULCH: Keep 2-to 3-inch deep layer of mulch on plant beds. Sustainable harvested mulch is best like melaleuca or eucalyptus. 5. ATTRACT WILDLIFE: Vertical layering of your plants provides more opportunities for wildlife to feed, rest, and shelter from the sun or heavy rain storms. 32
6. MANAGE YARD PESTS RESPONSIBLY: Select pest-resistant plants in suitable locations. 7. RECYCLE YARD WASTE: Local hardware stores offer small composting bins and in some cases even tabletop size for the kitchen. 8. REDUCE STORMWATER RUNOFF: Slowing runoff can be as easy as shaping your yard with small slopes with berms (rises) and swales (dips) to provide the rainwater more time to soak into the ground. 9. PROTECT THE WATERFRONT: Never use fertilizers or pesticides within the 10-foot maintenance-free zone near a waterbody. We also encourage you to visit to the mosquito control website to learn more about how you can reduce standing water and plants that encourage mosquito colonies to form. BrevardFl.gov/MosquitoControl The website includes information on removing invasive and non-native plants including an alphabetical list of all species by name with a corresponding photo. The filter provides a list result of 868 species with many on the High Invasion Risk. You can contact the agent for Brevard County’s FYN Program by filling out the form using their navigation buttons county by county. To learn more visit: FFL.ifas.ufl.edu
STRESS STRATEGIES
L
IFE HAS CHANGED QUITE MARKEDLY FOR ALL OF US. HOWEVER, THERE ARE PLENTY OF WAYS TO SOOTHE YOUR FRAZZLED NERVES AND REFOCUS. WE ASKED DEANN COLLINS, HEALTH FIRSTS' SENIOR BEHAVIORAL WELLNESS PROGRAM MANAGER TO PROVIDE A FEW STRATEGIES TO MANAGE THIS STRESS.
"It is important to remember that if it is an issue that you cannot control, it might be necessary to reexamine how you perceive that stressor. Cognitive behavioral strategies that focus on the mental processes involved in stress response can help change thoughts, beliefs and attitudes that often contribute to stress responses," said Collins. Other strategies include being kind to yourself. "Life can be difficult, and its important to reflect on past successes, engage in self-care, limit exposure to the news, seek support from those you trust and learn to say no," said Collins. The free resources through the COVID-19 crisis include a support line and is staffed by Licensed Clinical Social Workers from a Senior Behavioral Wellness team. People may call the hotline by dialing 321-434-7700 or by calling the Health First COVID-19 Hotline at 321434-8989, and choosing option 5. The support lines are operating seven days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

DR. CHRIS EDWARDS BELIEVES HIS VIERA PRACTICE WAS HEAVEN-SENT. EDWARDS, WHO LAUNCHED SMILE DESIGN & WELLNESS CENTER IN VIERA IN 2003, FOUND THE CURRENT---AND PERFECT---LOCATION FOR HIS UNIQUE DENTAL PRACTICE IN A BUILDING THAT ONCE HOUSED A CHURCH. “The church was moving to another location,” said Edwards. “I went to one of the services and prayed there. It felt right.” There still seems to be a reverence to the place, perhaps because Edwards saved lumber from the former altar and used it throughout the transformation from house of worship to house of wellness. Edwards’ vision for a mercury-free practice that promotes wellness and calms dental fears was realized in Viera, with touches such as aromatherapy, acupressure for injections, massage chairs, headphones, paraffin hand dips, organic tea bar and themed treatment rooms, such as the Beatles Room with laser disc concert experience. Buddy, the certified therapy dog, makes regular appearances to the delight of patients. Yes, this is not your Grandma’s dental practice, but then Edwards and his team are not your typical dentists. An honors graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Temple University School of Medicine, Edwards completed his general practice residency at Queen’s Medical Center in Hawaii, where he practiced for five years before relocating to Rhode Island. After 20 years practicing in the Ocean State, he moved to Brevard so
then high-school-age daughter, Jill, could be dually enrolled in Brevard County schools and flight training at Florida Tech. “I realized Viera was ‘the growing place’ and started my practice from scratch,” said Edwards, who lives in Herons Landing. At Smile Design, Edwards is joined by fellow Viera residents Drs. Rob Brown and Haley Freymiller. Brown, who makes his home in the Villages of North Solerno, attended the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and is a recipient of the National Health Service Corps Scholarship, which afforded him the opportunity to get acquainted with the Space Coast. The scholarship requires students to commit years of service in underserved areas, including Brevard, where Brown worked for the Brevard Health Alliance. He later was assigned to Pine Island on Florida’s west coast, but when Brown finished his commitment, he headed back to Brevard. “It’s such a gem on the east coast,” said Brown, who selected Viera as his home because of the excellent reputation of National Blue Ribbon School Manatee Elementary. Brown adds his own stamp to Smile Design when he brings his Fender guitar for some impromptu riffs at the office. New kid on the block Dr. Haley Freymiller is a Brevard native and graduate of Eau Gallie High School. After attending dental school at the University of Florida, she completed her general practice residency at Ohio State University College of Dentistry and a fellowship in dental oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Ohio followed, until she tired of the cold weather and returned home. “My family lives here and we’re all super close,” said Freymiller, whose duplex is in Addison Village’s Loren Cove. “You really can’t beat the laid back atmosphere of Viera. I like to hang out at the Addison Village Club pool, and shop at The Avenue Viera with my mom. Every weekend is a vacation.” During the coronavirus crisis, when the office was open only for emergencies, Freymiller kept busy crafting, painting and playing musical instruments that range from the mandolin to steel drums. Brown set up a tent in the backyard where he and his four children enjoy camping and outdoor movies while waiting for life to get back to normal. For his part, Edwards cycled, woodworked, kayaked, gardened and puttered with his 20-foot sailboat. “I’ve got more hobbies than Hobby Lobby,” he joked. All three doctors have done their part for their favorite community. For 15 years, Edwards provided free dental services to impoverished patients in the area. During National Children’s Dental Health Month this past February, Freymiller and Brown used games and fun presentations to encourage good dental hygiene for second graders at Manatee Elementary. “We want kids to take care of their teeth and have no dental fears,” said Freymiller. Tips on How to Stay Fit at Home During COVID-19 Outbreak EXERCISE SPECIALIST SHARES WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY AT HOME WHILE HAVING AN EFFECTIVE WORKOUT By Sarah Paulson WE KNOW THAT DURING THESE TRYING TIMES, MANY OF OUR GO-TO ROUTINES HAVE SUDDENLY STALLED. TAKING CARE OF OUR EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH IS CRUCIAL DURING THIS PERIOD OF UNCERTAINTY AND STRESS. BUT YOUR PHYSICAL FITNESS DOESN’T HAVE TO SUFFER JUST BECAUSE THE GYM IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. That’s why we’re launching our “Healthy at Home” series. We want you to have the tools you need to be well when we’re all practicing social distancing. Health First’s Pro-Health & Fitness Center has four ways you can get an upper- and lower-body strength workout in at home, even when you don’t have strengthtraining equipment. And you don’t need much – just a gallon of water, a towel and a chair. Just remember to check with your healthcare provider before starting a new fitness routine. (Not all of these exercises are suitable for everyone, and Health First and its affiliates are not liable should you choose to follow this workout and get injured.)
All exercises should be performed for 30 seconds. Repeat the entire circuit three times. And remember to check with your doctor before conducting these exercises if working out is something new for you. We hope these tips help you in your wellness and health journey. Be well and stay safe.
RUSSIAN TWISTS: Sit on a towel and lift your heels as you balance your body weight on your buttocks. Then, lift a gallon jug of water and move it from side to side, lightly touching the floor. If the weight of the water is too much, you can perform this exercise without it. CHAIR SQUATS: Stand in front of a chair and position your feet hip-width apart. Clasping your hands together, squat until your bottom touches the seat of the chair (but don’t sit down). Return to standing. SHOULDER TAPS: Stand at the side of a chair. Position your arms shoulder-distance apart. Take your hands and rest them on the seat, assuming a plank position as you distribute your weight between the tiptoes of your feet and your hands. One at a time, raise your hand and tap the opposite shoulder. Return your hand to the chair and repeat on the other side. MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS: Position yourself as you would for the shoulder taps – arms shoulder-distance apart with your weight balanced between your feet and upper body in a plank position. Alternate a marching motion, one foot at a time, as you lean on the chair for balance. 39
DEVELEOPER Letter Amidst the challenges, it has been heartwarming to see our community come together. We have many vital stakeholders that are helping our neighbors and local businesses as they struggle with circumstances that have come upon us all very quickly. As The Viera Company, we are proud to support important organizations such as Brevard Public Schools, Aging Matters - Meals on Wheels, Central Brevard Sharing Center, The Children’s Hunger Project, Hospitality Life - Feed the Need, and Friends of Children of Brevard, among others, that service those in the greatest need. It is these and other worthy organizations in Brevard County that help provide necessary strength and will aid in a return to vibrancy. TODD POKRYWA, PRESIDENT

S I WRITE THIS LETTER, IT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGING TIME FOR VIERA, BREVARD COUNTY, OUR STATE, NATION AND THE WORLD AS WE ALL HAVE BEEN TAKING PRECAUTIONS IN RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. WHILE WE HAVE COLLECTIVELY BEEN NAVIGATING UNCHARTED WATERS, THE VIERA COMPANY, AS AN ESSENTIAL BUSINESS, HAS BEEN FORGING AHEAD IN ADDRESSING CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND SHELTER NEEDS THAT OUR COMMUNITY REQUIRES AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO FUTURE RECOVERY AND GROWTH. THIS WILL ASSIST IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE US STRONGER THAN BEFORE AS WE HELP POSITION VIERA AND OUR MARKET FOR RENEWED ECONOMIC PROGRESS. It is during this period that I also get to share good news and am pleased to announce that Duran Golf Club has achieved a great distinction with certification in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. The honor from Audubon International comes after six years of work and inordinate hours of dedication by Duran's former General Manager David Tomczak, Senior Manager of Club Operations Jeff Von Eschen, and local resident volunteers Dr. Jim and Karen Papritan. This further evidences the sustainable nature of the Duran Golf Course and the Viera community.

While this is an unusual phase in our time, it is temporary and, therefore, we cannot overlook how appropriate it is to acknowledge the many great accomplishments of our students and schools as highlighted in this issue. We have much to be proud of in this regard. To the class of 2020, my sincerest congratulations to you as you embark on the next adventure which holds great promise. As the master plan developer for Viera, we are grateful for the residents and employees within the community that help make a difference by being the helpers. I would like to express a special thank you to our government officials and all of the front line health care and emergency services workers that are the greatest heroes bravely facing the trials to bring our community back to a sense of normalcy. Keep well Viera and God bless.
"AMIDST THE CHALLENGES, IT HAS BEEN HEARTWARMING TO SEE OUR COMMUNITY COME TOGETHER. WE HAVE MANY VITAL STAKEHOLDERS THAT ARE HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES AS THEY STRUGGLE WITH CIRCUMSTANCES THAT HAVE COME UPON US ALL VERY QUICKLY. "
