EDITOR'S Letter

The 8th annual Light Up Viera Holiday Parade takes place every year the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It has become a tradition for many families to find a place along the 2.7 mile route and mark their spot to view the parade many hours before the parade begins. I have worked behind the scenes in all previous parades including the Junior Parade many years ago. My open letter to everyone this year is to explain how we will continue this tradition, even if modified, by adhering to the guidelines set forth by the CDC. We will have signs posted along the route and you can use both sides of the road to view, thus creating over 5 miles of viewing along the route. There will also be signs indicating where you cannot sit, stand or view the parade in order to maintain the distance that is required. Here are a few ways to get prepared for the annual parade: • Marking your spot is allowed but we ask that you distance yourself from others by 6 feet and wear a mask when not stationary. • We will not have food trucks in order to keep individuals from lining up or congregating in large numbers (within a smaller area) along the route. • Stay in your marked area by bringing a chair or blanket and pack some treats as a pre-show snack. We do not allow anyone to throw candy to spectators. • Download the iHeart Media app, search for Light Rock 99.3, and bring your Bluetooth® speaker. We are encouraging everyone to listen to a 3-hour uninterrupted holiday channel provided by iHeart Media starting at 5:30PM. We are hoping the entire route will be playing the same holiday tunes. • Visit LightUpViera.com to learn more as we get closer to the event. There will also be a few changes to the participant line up. We will have our sponsored floats, performing units,

Brevard County Police and Fire, military members, nativity and Santa all smiling, waving and saying hello to you. The walking units we normally have are not participating this year as a precaution to keep them safe, including our local high school marching bands. This open letter to our readership and the community surrounding the route is intended to be kind, be patient, and show the world how we can have a safe parade in Brevard County. If you cannot easily walk, bike or use a golf cart to the parade route, we ask that you experience the fireworks and parade virtually. I will be sharing with you some behind-the-scenes footage of the preparations days before the event, showing how we plan and create these moments to have some fun, laugh a little and experience our annual holiday event in a different way. These changes were all designed to keep our traditions, do it safely, and use the known techniques to keep safe actions top of mind. This is how we pivot, this is how we adapt, and this is how we keep Light Up Viera Holiday Parade in our Viera, greater Brevard and Central Florida community culture. Let’s see your smile when your eyes squint just a bit, behind your mask, with all of us on November 28th. Happy holidays and an even Happier New Year.

ARADES, LIKE PEOPLE, ARE ALL SPECIAL. FOR EACH OF ITS SEVEN YEARS, THE LIGHT UP VIERA PARADE HAS DELIVERED A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE, TO THE CONTINUOUS DELIGHT OF SPECTATORS.

“I like to think that each year’s parade is unique in its own way, whether it be from the theme to the sponsors to the participants themselves,” said Laurie Widzgowski, Marketing and Events Coordinator for The Viera Company and the Viera Community Institute, which orchestrates the parade, the signature event for the area and an annual mustsee for upwards of 15,000 Brevard residents and beyond. While each parade may be different, they all share a common denominator. “Every year, the parade is spectacular!” added Widzgowski. “So many people have made this a holiday tradition to come out with family, friends and neighbors.” In this anything-but-normal year, the 2020 Light Up Viera parade will be even more out-of-the-ordinary. COVID-19 has impacted holiday celebrations big and small. California’s Tournament of Roses was nixed for New Year’s Day and Macy’s extravaganza will be a virtual one this Thanksgiving. Light Up Viera, on the other hand, is alive and well, and designed to keep participants and spectators safe. “It has been a hard year for everyone, and we want to bring happiness and a sense of normalcy with a tradition that many people look forward to during the holidays,” said Lauri Duda, Vice President of Marketing for The Viera Company and President of the Viera Community Institute. At its core, Light Up Viera will remain as it has been, a glorious evening event of bright lights, joy and wonder. Duda and her staff have labored particularly hard to create a memorable parade experience that minimizes risks for exposure to COVID-19 and will continue tweaking the fine points until just before the majestic live oak on the Viera

THE 2020 PARADE WILL UNVEIL “ UNDER THE SEA”... IT IS FILLED WITH LIGHTS, SPARKLE, GLITTER, AQUATIC ANIMALS AND INCORPORATES THE SPIRIT AND BEAUTY OF FLORIDA AND OUR BEAUTIFUL OCEAN” LAURIE WIDZGOWSKI, MARKETINGANDEVENTS COORDINATOR FOR THE VIERACOMPANY AND THE VIERACOMMUNITY INSTITUTE roundabout lights up the Saturday after Thanksgiving to signal the official start of the holiday season. “We will not do anything that will jeopardize the safety of the public,” added Duda. “Everything needs to be as safe as possible. Period.” Because of the pandemic, walking groups such as the Boy and Girl Scouts will not participate in the event, and the marching bands may be performing atop a float. Three marching bands have continued to be part of the backbone of the parade: Viera High School, Rockledge High School, and Satellite High School. They will not be able to participate this year, as of press time, but we still want to highlight their directors on pages 10 and 11.

Confirmed sponsors include The Viera Company, iHeart Media, Ron Norris Buick GMC Honda, Everglades Equipment Group, Viera Builders, Duda Family Council, Brewer Paving and Development, Tropic-Care of Florida, Fairway Management, The Avenue Viera, All Service Graphics, Brandt Ronat & Co., Brand Transfer & Storage Co., Joyal Homes, Viera Voice, and Island Animal Hospital of Viera.

Unfortunately, the food trucks and the MCs will be absent this year to avoid attracting crowds, but the many families who choose to tailgate and bring their own food to the parade are welcome to continue that tradition. In fact, folks can stake out their claim to a favorite spot early in the morning of parade day and return later with the family and a feast. Spectators are being asked to maintain social distancing along the 2.7 mile route that starts on Veterans Way, then meanders along Breslay and Tavistock Drives, Viera Boulevard and Stadium Parkway as it makes its way back to Veterans Way. “Spectators will have both sides of the road, about five miles of space, to stay socially distanced,” said Stephanie Byrd, Marketing Manager for The Viera Company. An additional parking lot at USSSA will be open for added spectator space along that stretch of Stadium Parkway. As it has for seven years before, a fireworks show at 6 p.m. on the Saturday after Thanksgiving---November 28 this year---will light up the skies for seven to ten minutes before the motorcycle police from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office escorts the parade. 2019 With a theme of “Warm Holiday Wishes,” the parade will again warmly embrace holiday cheer, particularly with the professionally designed floats from Tampa-based Festive Floats, which outdo themselves year after year in lighting up the floats. The 2020 parade will unveil “Under the Sea,” a never-beforeseen spectacular float in this year’s lineup. “It is filled with lights, sparkle, glitter, aquatic animals and incorporates the spirit and beauty of Florida and our beautiful ocean,” said Widzgowski.

IT HAS BEEN A HARD YEAR FOR EVERYONE, AND WE WANT TO BRING HAPPINESS AND A SENSE OF NORMALCY WITH A TRADITION THAT MANY PEOPLE LOOK FORWARD TO DURING THE HOLIDAYS" LAURI DUDA, VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING FOR THE VIERACOMPANY ANDPRESIDENT OF THE VIERACOMMUNITY INSTITUTE. The highly popular professional entertainment groups from last year’s parade are expected to make a return appearance with their dazzling displays of lights and performances. The troupe of Fight or Flight Productions, for example, is a crowd pleaser with energetic jumping stilt artists, high-flying tweeterboard acrobats, light-up power skips and other mesmerizing acts. This year their sister company, Odd-o-Ts’ Entertainment, will again be providing entertainment for the parade.

WE ARE ENCOURAGING PEOPLE NOT WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE TO CONSIDER VIEWING THE PARADE VIRTUALLY " STEPHANIE BYRD, MARKETINGMANAGER FOR THE VIERACOMPANY At the end of the parade is Light Up Viera’s VIP, Santa Claus, along with Mrs. Claus. He may even bring along an elf or two to join the fun! Light Up Viera this year will not only illuminate the streets of Viera, but also your phone and laptop, since the parade will be streamed via Facebook Live and additionally be available for viewing during the entire holiday season. “If anyone is concerned about seeing the parade in person, they can watch it online with their families anytime they want,” said Duda. The streamed version can also save a lot of driving for many. “We are encouraging people not within walking distance to consider viewing the parade virtually,” said Byrd. This year we’ll have Mindy Levy, radio host on local FM station Light Rock 99.3 (iHeart Media) MC the parade during the virtual broadcast. A longtime MC for the parade, Mindy will walk you through each parade moment via Facebook Live. Whether you're at home, in Florida or another part of the country, you'll be able to enjoy all the excitement, lights and sounds, the Light Up Viera Holiday Parade brings to the community. The streamed version of Light Up Viera should be stunning, thanks to the hardworking behind-thescenes team that includes Brandt Ronat & Co., which will provide incredible video footage of the fireworks, pre-parade activities for spectators and, of course, the parade itself. Speaking of streaming, the community can enjoy an additional hefty dose of holiday cheer with Santa’s streamed reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” For the reading, the jolly rotund guy will take a break from the holiday preparations and will be cozily ensconced amidst the holiday décor of the Joyal Bella Vue model home at Valencia in Addison Village. In a separate video, St. Nick will explain how he is able to leave gifts in homes lacking chimneys.

2019

MAKING IT LOOK EASY

Lauri Duda’s marketing team makes the parade seem easy-peasy. It is not. “We will start planning for next year’s parade the day after this parade ends,” explained Duda. The seeds for Light Up Viera were planted eight years ago, when Lauri Duda was celebrating a birthday in Savannah, Georgia. While changing for dinner, Duda heard commotion outside. From her hotel balcony she witnessed the wondrous sight of marching bands, antique cars and other parade staples, all shimmering in the lamplight. It was a lightbulb moment. “I figured we needed to plan a nighttime parade just like it,” said Duda, who promptly did. The rest is history. Light Up Viera was immediately embraced by residents and visitors alike. Spectators travel from as far as Orlando to witness one of the very few evening parades in Florida. The first Saturday after Thanksgiving was chosen as the date in order not to conflict with other holiday events. “We didn’t want to interfere with other parades in Brevard,” said Duda. The event is a massive undertaking that includes orchestrating 27 police units to maintain everyone safe and keep the traffic flowing, lighting units for sidewalk safety and a battalion of porta potties, among other preparations. The event is a massive undertaking that includes a well thought out and herculean plan, including but not limited to the BCSO, BCFR, our sponsors, participants and volunteers and most importantly, the dedication of the marketing team at The Viera Company.

PLAN

B Luminaria TWINKLING

Many fingers are crossed these days for Light Up Viera, but even if COVID-19 plays Scrooge with the festivities, Plan B awaits. While not as elaborate as the parade, it will nevertheless deliver plenty of holiday cheer. The oak tree will still be lit, the herald of the holidays and the fireworks will still dazzle in the night sky. However, with Plan B the parade will be replaced by a path of approximately 1,000 twinkling luminaria that will

light the way for families to enjoy a leisurely holiday drive. “We are doing everything we can to make it a special evening for the community,” said Widzgowski. Those eager to get an early taste of holiday spirit can head to The Viera Company’s Discovery Center at The Avenue Viera, where on the first week of November, a Christmas window display very apropos for the times will be on display. In one window, Rudolph will be connecting with his fellow reindeer, elves and other North Pole characters via Zoom as he lazes by the pool. The other window will feature a snowman covered in sand enjoying time out on a surfboard while enjoying a local launch at the Kennedy Space Center. For thousands in Brevard, Light Up Viera is not to be missed. Brevard County Fire Rescue District 45 Chief Tom Neidert, for example, will be there in his full Grinch regalia, just as he has in years past. “The community really gets involved and comes together for this parade,” he said. NONPROFIT CAN BE ONLY AS GOOD AS ITS PEOPLE AND ITS COMMUNITY, WHICH IS THE REASON DEVEREUX FLORIDA IS SUCH A GREAT ORGANIZATION. ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE IS PATTY HURST, WHO JOINED DEVEREUX IN 1988, JUST ONE YEAR AFTER DEVEREUX ADVANCED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH FLORIDA ESTABLISHED A VIERA CAMPUS BY INVITATION OF FORMER GOVERNOR BOB GRAHAM. THE NEW HOSPITAL HAS CHANGED THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH AUTISM, INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND SPECIALTY MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS, WHILE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING THE NEED FOR FLORIDA TO RELY ON OUT-OF-STATE TREATMENT FACILITIES FOR CHILDREN WITH SEVERE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEEDS. Over the years, Devereux Florida continued to grow, and today the nonprofit is one of the state’s most comprehensive child welfare and behavioral health organizations, serving individuals and their families. Patty Hurst proved instrumental in propelling that growth. “Her work at Devereux is more than a career to her,” said Lindsey Phillips, Director of External Affairs at Devereux Florida. “Thanks to Patty’s work, and even more so in recent years as she has been primarily responsible for donor relations, we have an entire community of wonderful people who are deeply committed to supporting our children in a variety ways.” Hurst, who began her connection with Devereux as a nurse on the Viera campus 32 years ago, later segued into administration and quality and risk managing. If the project could help the kids, Hurst was willing to give it a try. During her time as campus administrator, Hurst even helped to orchestrate a thrift shop run by the late Barbara Lupton, who had antique and auction experience and made the facility “sing.” She credits Lupton for helping her hone her fundraising skills.

“She was directly responsible for our continued development success and taught me a great deal,” said Hurst. In 2007, Hurst was selected to be the Donor Relations and Community Relations Manager for the organization, the job from which she retired September 30.

HER WORK AT DEVEREUX IS MORE THAN A CAREER TO HER” LINDSEY PHILLIPS, DIRECTOR OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS AT DEVEREUX FLORIDA. “Patty has been instrumental in establishing and maintaining supportive relationships with members of the Brevard community,” added Phillips. “Patty has always welcomed neighbors and friends of Devereux to be part of the village that creates positive change in young people’s lives.” During Hurst’s tenure with Devereux, the organization added Titusville and Orlando facilities to its original Viera campus, plus a specialized therapeutic group home for young men, group homes in Orange and Brevard Counties, family care homes throughout the state for children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, an adult day treatment program and service centers throughout Central and South Florida.

A LONG HISTORY OF CARING

In 1912, Philadelphia schoolteacher Helena Devereux, discouraged by the school district’s inability to adequately teach children with special needs, began educating these youngsters out of her own house. At a time when very little was understood about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Helena Devereux took an interest in these kids. She recognized that the public school system was ill-equipped to teach children with intellectual challenges. Her intuitive ideas in developing individualized educational programs for children with special needs were far beyond her time. Devereux strongly believed that children, regardless of the level of their disabilities, could learn and achieve personal growth in an environment tailored to their needs, and she set about to prove her theory, with $94 to rent a house in Devon, a suburb of Philadelphia. Here, she lived and taught the children. Her class became the de-facto special education classroom. Over the course of Devereux’s lifetime, the organization that came to be known as the Devereux Foundation continued to grow, earning nonprofit status and operating centers in locations across the country. “Miss Devereux had an almost magical effect on kids,” said former Devereux administrator Franklin Dale. Like Helena Devereux, Patty Hurst has touched the lives of many children. When she arrived at Devereux, the organization was something of a well-kept secret in the area.

PATTY HURST, SECONDFROMRIGHT, WITH LOCAL STAFF AT AFUNDRAISER IN2020. “At the time, we didn’t have much interaction with the community,” said Hurst. Hurst quickly corrected that situation. “While she was the administrator of the Viera Campus, it was among her top priorities to increase awareness of the work we do at Devereux and facilitate opportunities for our children to enjoy positive experiences in the community while supporting local establishments and businesses, a mutually beneficial approach to community engagement,” said Phillips. The Duda family and The Viera Company were among Devereux’s earliest fans. “We have enjoyed the support of the Duda family since prior to the building of the facility on Murrell Road,” said Hurst. In fact, John Duda and Joseph Duda donated the land that would help Governor Graham realize his vision for a facility to help children’s emotional and behavioral needs. “These men were way ahead of their time,” added Hurst. “Had it not been for the Duda family donating the 5-plus acres in Viera, Devereux may not have a presence in Florida, let alone in almost every Florida county, some 32 years later.” 17

The Viera Company’s gift of land was the beginning of a long-lasting relationship with Devereux. “I couldn’t begin to enumerate all the ways and means in which they have supported the children,” said Hurst. “This isn’t just the writing of a check, although they’ve supported every fundraising event we’ve had.” Starting with Devereux’s first year in Brevard and continuing through the decades, the Duda family and The Viera Company have been there for the children’s organization. “Since the beginning, there has been support for events, school supplies and holiday gifts,” added Hurst. The Viera Company remains a robust sponsor of Devereux’s fundraisers. During her tenure with the company, Realtor Deborah Tomczak frequently chaired or co-chaired critically-needed fundraising events at venues such as Wesche Jewelers. Duran Golf Club in Viera was often the venue for fashion shows and cocktail parties, usually with expenses greatly reduced or gifted by the business. The Viera Company’s relationship with Devereux reached national attention with Joseph Duda, retired CEO of The Viera Company, serving as trustee for the Devereux Foundation board in Philadelphia for many years. The connection between The Viera Company and Devereux also transcended formal corporate support to encompass appreciation from individual employees with a continuous stream of gifts, ranging from prom dresses and jewelry for the girls to toys, games and school supplies. “Some years ago, we started receiving gifts and gift cards from all of The Viera Company employees collected at their holiday celebration for staff,” said Hurst. 18

“This is the most intimate and heartfelt manner of giving. It denotes a personal connection to our children. But then, this is no surprise from a company founded on the concept of faith.” During Devereux’s gala celebrating its centennial in 2012, the nonprofit recognized the Duda family for their enduring support. “The Duda family and The Viera Company giving has been of time, talent and treasure and it continues after 32 years,” said Hurst. “I often wonder how many charitable organizations can proclaim that fact from their original benefactors.” Hurst will miss Devereux, but she won’t be going far. On February 19, she married the “love of her life,” Peter Odenbach, and immediately moved to their new home in the gated community of Bridgewater at—you guessed it—Viera. “There is so much to do in the area,” she said. With an eighth grandchild on the way, she anticipates becoming a “professional grandmother” of a brood that spans ages from 22 to newborn. In her new four-bedroom, three-bath villa, she has ample space for the kids and grandkids to visit. “We have all levels of activities ahead of us,” she said. If her legacy at Devereux is any indication, Patty makes a dynamite grandma. “Patty has led by example as our entire organization has come to understand the Pillars of Servant Leadership,” said Phillips. “She is, and always has been, extraordinarily dedicated and will do all she can to make a difference in the life of a child.”

'Twas the night before Christmas,

when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—

“Happy Christmas to all

and to all a good night!”

WALK-ON’S BISTREAUX AND BAR TARGETS MARCH OPENING

W

HEN YOU SPOT TWO OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS IN THE WORLD CONNECTED TOGETHER, YOU SHOULD REALLY START TO WONDER IF THE UNIVERSE IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. OR AT LEAST THAT’S HOW IT SEEMED TO NATE FOWLER WHEN HE WAS WATCHING HIS BELOVED FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES PLAYING IN THE WALK-ON’S INDEPENDENCE BOWL IN 2018. After seeing the commercial spots for Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar and realizing the restaurant combined two of his absolutely favorite things in the world, sports and Cajun food, he picked up the phone and called the corporate office to ask about franchise opportunities. “The next thing I knew, we were on a flight to Baton Rouge!” said Nate’s wife, Courtney. “We’d wanted to open our own business for some time, but hadn’t found the right fit. Until we found Walk-On’s.” And that was the beginning for Viera’s newest dining and sporting destination. Nate and Courtney will be opening their Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar at the corner of Napolo and Lake Andrew Drives near the developing Town Center area in Viera mid-2021.

22

Walk-On’s 7,500-square-foot location will feature a from-scratch menu and 70" large-screen TVs playing just about every sporting event imaginable. “What attracted us to the business was that it’s such a great mix of that taste of Louisiana and sports. Delicious food that you can't typically find in our area,” Courtney said. “We’re creating a really fun atmosphere, and a culture that makes you want to be a part of the team.”

The biggest challenges for the Fowlers were finding the best location and getting the plans drawn up to meet their goals, but pushed forward despite the challenging times

...INTRODUCING WALK-ON’S BISTREAUX & BAR of today and broke ground on the project in September. Construction of the Fowler’s dream business is well underway. “What’s impressed me most about the Walk-On’s corporate family is the level of involvement during the pandemic,” Courtney said. Through the Walk-On's Game On Foundation, corporate leadership created something they called Furlough Kitchen, providing free meals for all furloughed employees of any restaurant during these difficult times. They’ve also established donation locations and free food for people recently affected by the hurricanes in Louisiana. “The Walk-On's Game On Foundation has done so many great things in the communities where the restaurants are located,” Courtney said,” We can't wait to see what we can do with them here in our community.” The Fowlers are hoping to open their new Walk-On’s Bistreaux and Bar in early March and, as true “locals,” they say they can’t wait to become more involved with the community of Viera.

WHO DOESN’T LOVE DRIVING A CAR THAT

? s e l k r a p S

F

EW EXPERIENCES MAKE THE AVERAGE AMERICAN DRIVER AS JOYFUL AS TURNING THE WHEEL OUT FOR A RIDE ALONG THE BOULEVARD IN THEIR FRESH, SPARKLING, AND SPOTLESS AUTOMOBILE. A SHINE SO BRIGHT YOU NEED TO SHIELD YOUR EYES JUST TO LOOK AT IT. OR SO IT SEEMS TO THE PROUD OWNER.

Soon, our neighbors will all be able to experience that feeling early and often more conveniently than ever before. Tommy’s Express Car Wash broke ground this fall at its newest location at the corner of Stadium Parkway and Veterans Way in Viera and is planning its grand opening for late spring. Owner Michael Ash and his three sons had an idea that they’d like to open a business together. After experiencing a Tommy’s Express Wash with their own cars on a trip to South Carolina, the boys realized this was the right opportunity for them. “It’s the only car wash worthy of the Space Coast,” Ash said. “I know so many engineers who are curious to know how it all works.” The “it” refers to the Express part of Tommy’s Express Car Wash, a complete exterior wash and dry covering 130 feet of tunnel in less than three minutes. “And every time I’ve seen it,” Ash said, “every car is totally dry on the exit.” Headquartered in Holland, Michigan, the Tommy’s Express chain reports they can wash 600,000 cars in a year in one of their facilities. That’s up to about 230 cars in an hour. The wash utilizes a flat conveyor system that does not require cars to be locked into a track as so many traditional automatic car washes do. Even as an express-style, ride-through car wash, Tommy provides all the “full-service” offerings including body wax, 24

tire shine, wheel cleaning, and deep cleaning available on a per-wash or monthly subscription basis. Tommy’s subscriptions can be managed through an app on your phone and you can get your car washed at any Tommy’s location in 27 states. You can even set up a family plan for all your cars. When they open, Ash says the facility will employ about five full-time workers and up to three or so more part-timers. “We’ve been talking about doing this for the past few years,” Ash said. "Everyone we’ve talked to in the area is excited and with a quality wash taking only two or three

EXPANDS FOOTPRINT

NEW SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY UNDER WAY IN VIERA

E

XPANDING ON THEIR EXISTING SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY IN VIERA, SONATA SENIOR LIVING WILL SOON BE OPENING SONATA EAST AT VIERA, CONNECTING ITS CURRENT ASSISTED-LIVING LOCATION WITH A RESORT-STYLE APARTMENT COMPLEX, FEATURING 88 INDEPENDENT-LIVING AND 30 MEMORY-CARE UNITS.

The expansion to the more than 5-acre property across Breslay Drive from their Sonata Viera Assisted Living property represents “a complete continuum of care,” according to Sonata’s Regional Director of Business Development, Bridget Perers. “Sonata’s Viera campus lifestyle options will now offer residents access to all three types of living options,” Perers said, “with most residents maintaining their independent living style, described as “Concierge-style”, those residents in need of extra support for daily living may transition to assisted living, or the more robust structure of Sonata’s Serenades Memory Care.”

CENTRALLY LOCATED

The new Sonata East at Viera is located literally across the street from the existing Sonata facility and conveniently located near the Veterans Administration facility and nearby all that Viera has to offer its residents. “With our Independent Living, there’s so much more to choose from at Sonata East at Viera. Spacious apartments with premium upgrades in a variety of floor plans provide a maintenance-free lifestyle and remove all the worry of homeownership,” Perers said. “The newest innovations and technologies integrate into beautifully appointed residences

26

with modern kitchens, private balconies and sunrooms, washer/ dryer and built-in safety and security.” The independent-living community offers a selection of one and two-bedroom floor plans of up to 1,250 square feet and include amenities such as a zero-entry (gradual slope to transition from land to water) heated pool, movie theater, library, game room, fitness center, beauty salon/ spa, and more. Outdoor features of the landscaped property include a bocce court, grilling area, off-leash dog park, and other recreation. Covered parking will also be available for residents and visitors.

...INTRODUCING SONATA EAST AT VIERA AWARD-WINNING MEMORY CARE

The memory care facility is based on Sonata’s own award-winning Serenades Memory Care and built around a secure courtyard. In the 30-unit care facility, residents will have a comfortable home environment with services like mealtime reminders, medication reminders, and in-apartment e-call system, all structured to meet their specific needs.

INNOVATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Innovation is key to Sonata’s approach, according to Perers. She describes the new facilities as part of the organization’s “master plan” including automatic doors, security and safety protocols, and technology designed to assist nurses, families and residents as they adapt to and thrive in their new surroundings. “Every choice is made with the dignity and well-being of the residents in mind,” she said.

Sonata East at Viera is located at 4206 Breslay Drive in Melbourne and is expected to open in Summer, 2021.

THE EYE IS THE OF THE BODY

O

UR VISION IS INDEED A GREAT GIFT THAT LIGHTS OUR WAY, BUT IT IS COMPLEX, FRAGILE AND FRAUGHT WITH PROBLEMS, PARTICULARLY WHEN IT CONCERNS THE RETINA, THAT THIN LAYER OF TISSUE AT THE BACK OF THE EYE THAT CONVERTS LIGHT INTO A PICTURE AND SENDS THAT MESSAGE TO THE BRAIN FOR VISUAL RECOGNITION. WHEN THE RETINA DETACHES OR IS OTHERWISE COMPROMISED, SPECIALIZED CARE IS CRITICAL.

Viera residents experiencing retinal issues, or, for that matter, any type of eye problems, will soon have a specialist’s specialist in their backyard, now that Florida Retina Specialists has officially broken ground on its 10,000-square-foot new office at Viera Medical Park on 2329 Medico Lane. “The Viera Company is excited and pleased to welcome Florida Retina Specialists to the master planned community of Viera,” said Eva Rey, Director of Community Management, Amenities and Communication. “Our community continues to attract quality medical service providers for our residents and visitors and this addition is a great example of a perfect fit.” Florida Retina Associates’ new state-of-the-art facility neighbors the Arthritis & Joint Center of Florida and is within walking distance from Viera Hospital. “Florida Retina Specialists will be centrally located within Viera, close to the hospital, and will have easy access to I-95,” added Rey. The new location is a natural expansion for Florida Retina Specialists. 28

...INTRODUCING SONATA EAST AT VIERA

EYE ON THEIR EXPANSION

“When we founded Florida Retina Specialists in 2014 with the first office in Merritt Island, my vision was to eventually expand our services into the North, Central and Southern areas of Brevard County with several satellite offices,” said Dr. Frank X Venzara III at the Sept. 25 groundbreaking. “That vision is being realized. After two years praying and searching for a Viera location, this one was a no-brainer for several reasons: Viera population and businesses are growing at an exponential rate, many of our current patients live in this area as well as our referring optometrists, and physicians and it is centrally located across the street from Viera Hospital.” The office will treat patients with potentially blinding eye conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, flashes and floaters, and perform surgery on patients with retinal detachments.

FLORIDA RETINA ASSOCIATES’ NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY NEIGHBORS THE ARTHRITIS & JOINT CENTER OF FLORIDA AND IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE FROM VIERA HOSPITAL.

29

Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Venzara III is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Society of Ophthalmology and the Christian Ophthalmology Society. After earning his medical degree from the University of Miami, he served as researcher at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and completed a four-year internship and ophthalmology residency training program at Texas A&M Scott & White Eye Institute before joining the Retina Consultants of Alabama fellowship program at UAB Callahan Eye Hospital.

Dr. Venzara’s new office, slated for completion in the summer of 2021, will provide an added level of convenience for new and existing Viera-area patients, many of whom already access Florida Retina Specialists offices in Merritt Island or Rockledge, The Mediterranean-style facility will provide 5,000-square-feet of office space for Florida Retina Specialists, as well as an additional 5,000-square-feet for two other medical practices. Designed by award-winning Melbourne architect David Nagrodsky the new office will be built by the Centennial Development Group. Along with the handsome structure comes a facility that will help keep those “lamps of the body” shining brightly.

ARRIVES IN VIERA IN EARLY 2021

W

INN-DIXIE, A STORE BRAND FAMILIAR FOR DECADES TO FAMILIES IN THE SOUTH, WILL ADD VIERA AS ITS NEWEST LOCATION EARLY IN 2021.

Parent company Southeastern Grocers announced that Winn-Dixie selected the former Earth Fare site at 5410 Murrell Rd. to launch its Viera presence. The new store is one of eight new stores the grocery chain plans to open in Florida in the next few months. “As we expand our footprint, we are able to support more communities throughout Florida and be the grocer our customers and communities can always count on,” said Anthony Hucker, President and CEO of Southeastern Grocers, parent company of Winn-Dixie. Each of the new stores will be remodeled with a specialized approach to provide a wide product selection tailored to customer demand in individual communities. With the new stores, the company is expanding its variety of signature items with specialty cheeses, farmfresh produce and enhanced grab-and-go options that include fresh sushi and take-and-bake pizzas. The carnivores in the family will appreciate Winn-Dixie’s affordably priced Certified Angus Beef selections that are inspected to meet standards more selective than USDAchoice and prime beef. Seafood will definitely be part of the attractions, as the new stores will specialize in fresh selections that include Florida Keys lobster, Florida stone crab and shrimp. The bakery will feature artisanal breads, and enhanced sections of organic, natural and gluten-free products will also be available. 34

“We’ve expanded our product assortments in these new stores to ensure our customers have fresh, quality products at the right price for every meal,” said Hucker. The supermarket’s delivery service through its e-commerce partners will allow customers to shop from the comfort of their bunny slippers, should they wish. A Winn-Dixie mobile app provides enrollment for the market’s loyalty program, plus special offers, coupons and rewards. “We are committed to providing an exceptional shopping experience for all of our customers,” added Hucker. The new Winn-Dixie store in Viera will employ approximately 100 team members. Individuals interested in potential career opportunities can email segrocers.com/careers.

WHY I LOVE

Two years ago, when Raychel Vaughn and her husband Mark left Jacksonville after Dr. Vaughn joined Dr. David Simonson at his Brevard Foot and Ankle practice in Rockledge, the couple quickly chose Viera as their new base of operations based on how attractive, convenient and compact the area is. “Viera is so walkable,” said Vaughn. The young couple, who live in Addison Village’s Loren Cove, doubled the size of their family when they welcomed twins Greyson and Hendryx nine months ago. The babies give Raychel and Mark two great reasons to head to nearby Viera Wetlands and introduce the twins to the wonders of nature surrounding their home. “We go there almost every night,” said Raychel. Addison Village’s magnificent new clubhouse is also a frequent destination for the Vaughn clan. “We enjoy the beach, but the pool at the clubhouse is nicer, and there is no sand!” said Raychel. They regularly enjoy the Addison Village Club with a 7,700-square-foot family pool with splash pad and the 3,000-square-foot leisure pool keeps the family happy and active.

36

When the Vaughn grownups need their own “me” time, Dr. Mark might head to nearby Duran Golf Course for a game. “He can walk there from our house,” said Raychel, who for her part favors Kinna Blow Dry Bar at The Avenue Viera for relaxation. The Avenue figures prominently as a Vaughn destination for date nights. “We love to enjoy adult cocktails at The Avenue and Mark is obsessed with Bonefish Grill,” joked Raychel. When dining out, Viera also delivers with Vaughn favorites such as 28 North Gastropub for its locally sourced, chef-curated pub menu and El Leoncito for exciting Mexican cuisine. The Vaughn twins are still too young to enter Viera’s excellent school system, but they are enjoying day care at Viera Children’s Academy, a leading preschool and early education center in the Space Coast. However, their mom will be going to school, since Raychel is a 5th grade math teacher at Manatee Elementary School. For Raychel, Viera offers big-city amenities in a small-town atmosphere perfect for families. “Viera is known for great schools and its community feel,” she said.

DEVELOPER Letter

TODD POKRYWA, PRESIDENT

T

HE HOLIDAYS HAVE ARRIVED HERE IN VIERA AND, AS WITH MOST OF 2020, THEY APPEAR TO BE SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT FROM YEARS GONE BY. ON THE SURFACE, THERE ARE MANY PREVIOUSLY UNFAMILIAR BUT NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS, SUCH AS PHYSICAL DISTANCING, THAT HAVE BECOME SEEMINGLY ROUTINE OVER THE LAST 8 MONTHS. WHILE THERE IS AN APPEARANCE SOMETHING IS OUT OF THE ORDINARY, THE UNDERLYING THEME CONTINUES TO BE GRATITUDE FOR THE MANY BLESSINGS IN OUR LIVES AND THIS VIBRANT COMMUNITY DURING THE MOST FESTIVE SEASON. WHILE CHRISTMAS AND HANUKKAH CELEBRATIONS MAY BE SMALLER OR ORGANIZED WITH SAFETY AT THE FOREFRONT IN OUR MINDS, THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON CONTINUES TO BE WITNESSED IN THE CARE WE ARE DEMONSTRATING FOR OUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES AND NEIGHBORS.

our neighbors’ holiday brighter. One such organization that The Viera Company has consistently and proudly supported from its inception in the community is Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health’s Viera Campus, which provides a professional therapeutic environment for children and adolescents facing significant, emotional, behavioral and development challenges. We extend our best wishes to Devereux’s Patty Hurst on her retirement and thank her for the wonderful relationship she fostered with The Viera Company and the community over the course of her great career. Our community’s holiday tradition, the Light Up Viera Holiday Parade, is scheduled to take place on November 28, 2020 at 6pm. The show will begin with a fireworks display as usual, but some elements have been modified this year in response to current circumstances. I encourage you to catch this spectacular holiday parade live on Facebook. Cyndi and I expect to have a smaller Thanksgiving and Christmas gathering not unlike what I expect many family celebrations to be like this year. However, no matter how small they may be, technological advances that allow us to communicate via Zoom, FaceTime, and other such platforms provide the ability for our loved ones and neighbors to feel no less appreciated during this holiday season. Viera offers us all an opportunity to get outside and enjoy the active lifestyle provided by the many and ever- expanding miles of trails, parks and amenities throughout our community. During 2020, Viera has continued to grow and we are poised to add new businesses, neighborhoods and homes to the mix in 2021. Yet, we pause and celebrate the joyous season and provide support or express thanks to those around us. For me, I am beyond grateful to the outstanding professional team at The Viera Company for all of their dedicated efforts during a very complicated year. To them and all of you, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.

Nonprofits serving Viera and greater Brevard County need your help this holiday season as they respond to the needs of individuals and families that may be encountering more challenges this year than last. There are numerous organizations and churches responding to this call and it is important to reflect on the time, talent and treasure we may each be able to devote to their efforts to help make

While Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations may be smaller or organized with safety at the forefront in our minds, the spirit of the season continues to be witnessed in the care we are demonstrating for our family, friends, colleagues and neighbors. 40
