The Viera community is always in motion. The upcoming year will be busier than ever and I’m looking forward to getting back to pre-pandemic times with ribbon cutting ceremonies, special events and backyard barbeques. It is exciting to see the 2021 projects finish and watch the assembly of the foundations and walls for new buildings. As the days become longer, we are encouraged to stay outside for a longer run, walk or bike ride where we can pass by all the progress.

Q&A

Can you tell us about the name Aripeka? Aripeka was a citrus grove in western Central Florida that was owned and operated by Duda, the parent company of The Viera Company. The name itself is derived from a famous Seminole leader. We saved the name for the right community in Viera.

Who are the builders within Aripeka? We are delighted to have four authorized builders in Aripeka: LifeStyle, Joyal, and Stanley Homes. They have all previously built within Central Viera. CDS Home Builders is our newest authorized builder and we are looking forward to seeing their homes in Aripeka. The architecture will be a blend of modern Florida with environmental and energy considerations within each plan to complement the native landscape. Each builder can tailor the home design to each lot, using care to save the healthy existing trees to the extent possible.

We asked Scott Miller, SrVP of Sales and Community Development, to give us a look into the concept of this new neighborhood.

A lot has been written about mental health in urban communities and the impact green spaces have on communities. Can you speak about the design of this neighborhood and if it was considered in this way prior to the design? The calming benefits of trees have a profound impact on our health. Research has shown that green spaces have impacts on both our individual and collective mental wellbeing. We wanted to create an environment where the design of the homes bends to the trees on their designated lots and not the usual method of removal and replant. We have established areas where we are diligently working to keep in order to maintain the beauty of these old Florida oaks and palms.

What other attributes are planned for Aripeka? The gated neighborhood will have a clubhouse for social gathering, a series of nature trails that will connect to a central park, and lakes and parks throughout to provide that calming effect I spoke of earlier. VIERA.com

Sammy the sloth, Deborah the klipspringer, Brody the brown bear and more than 900 other equally amazing creatures steal the show at the East Coast Zoological Society, aka Brevard Zoo, but meeting these charming ambassadors of the animal kingdom is just the beginning of the many benefits associated with getting up close and personal with this small but mighty zoological wonder.

We dug a little deeper and asked a professional trainer, the educational curator and the director of volunteer programs at the Brevard Zoo, and a zoo volunteer to provide some insight into the importance and the value of these animal connections.

Kayakers can enjoy mini-African aqua-safaris with guided and self-guided tours of Expedition Africa, as well as a look at the wetlands of Wild Florida. Kids of all ages can cool off at the Indian River Play Lagoon and its mangrove forest.

Starting your day off with that sunlight, being out there in the fresh air, that’s part of wellness.

The Zoo’s Treetop Trek Aerial Adventures offers plenty of adrenaline for newbie zipliners as well as for experienced zippers. A high-wire bike ride through the trees, swinging ropes, suspended bridges and more add to the excitement.

“At the zoo, not only do you have the vitamin D component, but if someone has the ability to be outside and take in that scenery, and take in that human-animal connection, they’re free to be.”

“Today, anxiety, especially with kids and teens on social media, is off-the-charts high,” said Wall. “The zoo allows them to get out and free their minds to be who they are.”

A zoo visit touches us all emotionally, regardless of age or infirmities. Chris Wall, who works with Health First’s Integrated Health and Wellness Program and with NewFit, Health First’s surgical weight loss and bariatric program, notes that research on residents of skilled nursing facilities testify to the fact.

Visiting Brevard Zoo is good for your soul and mind, and additionally for your body. It’s a great way to clock in those daily 10,000 steps. If you need a little assist to get those muscles moving, visiting the Zoo is a kind, gentle way to do it.

“They took residents out to various zoos, and some of them were petting zoos, and the emotional and physiological benefits were clear,” he explained. “Anxiety went down, but also the isolation and loneliness decreased as well. A place like Brevard Zoo is freeing, is active, and it allows them to express their creativity as well.”

“Movement is medicine,” said Wall. “People with chronic arthritis, any kind of movement – within reason, you know, move-rest, move-rest – is beneficial, versus a sedentary existence. Arthritis really flares up, especially osteoarthritis, when you’re not moving enough.” Together with the neighboring linear park, Brevard Zoo makes a perfect location to move those muscles. “I use that linear park myself, whether it’s jogging or calisthenics,” said Wall. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS The camps, hikes and educational programs touch entire families, many of whom do not have easy access to the natural world. The five-week Zoo School immerses fifth graders in Title I schools in nature, with the Zoo as their laboratory. “They come here every day and do their regular schoolwork and special programs,” said Andrea Aubert, Education Program Curator. “We get them outside and incorporate the Zoo into their studies.” Thanks to a grant from the United Way, third and fourth graders in four of the county’s Title 1 schools participate in Reading Buddies, an early-literacy program that encourages older children to read to younger ones about wildlife and wild places. For 20 years, the zoo’s Lagoon Quest has introduced the estuary’s amazing biodiversity to all fourth graders in Brevard.

THE AQUARIUM PROJECT East Coast Zoological Society is currently in the middle of a campaign to raise $100 million in the next five years. Eighty-five million will be used to create a second campus, a worldclass aquarium and conservation campus on 14 acres of shoreline along the Banana River at Port Canaveral. The additional $15 million will further amplify the zoo’s impact through education, conservation and animal wellness. The aquarium will leverage the benefits and beauty of natural Florida and its sea life to provide guests with an educational, joyful experience and enhance the Zoo’s already significant conservation efforts.

With Club Zoo, zoo staff visit schools once a week for the whole school year to engage in science-based activities with students who participate in this after-school program. For the tiniest zoo fans, Zooper Kids, aimed at ages three to five, is a “Mommy and Me” experience three times a week. Zoo programs additionally include homeschooling events, Earth Explorer Camps for seventh to ninth graders, Junior Keeper classes for ages 10 to 13, a Family Nature Club that helps low-income families enjoy nature in a safe way and night hikes for a totally different zoo experience.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteers have always been an integral part of the zoo. Kathleen Nichols, Director of Volunteer Programs, emphasizes that volunteers run the gamut of age, from 13-year-old Zoo Teen Volunteers to a 91-year-old aptly named Robert Sunshine, the Zoo’s most current “senior” volunteer. In fact, there is more than double the number of volunteers as there is staff. “Brevard Zoo was built by volunteers and they provide 84,000 hours and $1.2 million in savings each year,” said Nichols. While some volunteers prefer interpretive guide roles, others gravitate to animal husbandry tasks, such as helping at the Sea Turtle Healing Center or building living shorelines with Restore Our Shores projects and even assisting in the care of Perdido Key Beach mice, the tiny “keepers of the dunes” the Zoo is helping to breed back from the brink of extinction.

Holly Cloutier considers her time as a Brevard Zoo volunteer precious. The Melbourne retiree loves interacting with guests, giving them insights about the new babies at the Rainforest area. The experience allows her to meet folks from around the world, and conversations that begin about the animals can veer into delightful rabbit holes. “I’ve come home from volunteering with recipes from all over the world,” she said. Seeing the kids enthralled with the critters is, as the credit card ad once said, priceless. “It makes my week,” said Cloutier, who adds a word of advice. “I tell everybody to volunteer at the Zoo. It will make you smile.”

In 2019, they were presented with the President’s Award by the Lincoln Motor Company. The award is only presented to the top-performing dealerships that exhibit quality business practices and Lincoln’s core principals. Dealerships nationwide compete for the honor, but only 10% achieve it. “It is your dealership’s commitment and determination in reaching or exceeding sales goals, while scoring high in customer satisfaction, that positioned you among this distinguished group,” stated Kevin Cour, Director of Marketing, Sales & Service, Lincoln, and Frederiek Toney, President Global Ford Customer Service Division, in a letter to the dealership. The building will be divided into three unique showrooms for Lincoln, Jaguar & Land Rover. Expect modern architecture inside the multiple rooms and conversation areas as they incorporate various surface types with the use of earthy design elements including wood, leather and stone. Pangea Viera’s newest neighborhood is Pangea Park in Central Viera. The community has four new models under construction. We sat down with Mary Mead, SrVP of Sales and Marketing, to ask her a few questions about Viera’s newest neighborhood.

Pangea Park is an unusual name. Can you tell us more about this choice?

As I write this letter, spring is here and we expect it to be a season of growth and expansion in Viera. Business is booming with new residential neighborhoods and commercial developments being introduced throughout the community. Viera is the premier choice for living in Brevard County and is an economic engine on the Space Coast. The community possesses a wide array of amenities and occupies a unique location in the geographic center of the Space Coast market with convenient access to four interchanges along I-95, less than one hour to three international airports, 15 minutes to 72 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, and it offers a plethora of options for living and working. Viera Builders, Christopher Burton Luxury Homes, Elan Builders, Arthur Rutenberg, Stanley Homes, Joyal Homes, LifeStyle Homes, and WCI/Lennar are all experiencing robust residential demand in the Viera neighborhoods in which they build. As a result, Viera recently climbed into the top 15 bestselling master planned communities in the country. This ranking garners national attention, is indicative of meeting consumer preferences and demands, and suggests high market share in our metropolitan statistical area. 32

VIERA CONTINUES TO BLOOM New neighborhoods are opening for sales and there are options to fit every lifestyle. Recently, sales commenced in the Viera Builders’ exclusive community of Pangea Park located southwest of the intersection of Lake Andrew Drive and Pineda Boulevard. This new neighborhood is planned to include an amenity complex and 676-units with Craftsman, Modern Coastal and Farmhouse elevations. Aripeka, located east of Lake Andrew Drive and south of Strom Park, is a custom home neighborhood poised to start sales later this year with builders Joyal Homes, LifeStyle Homes, Stanley Homes, and CDS. This new neighborhood is a private, gated community that will include an amenity area for residents to gather, native habitat preservation, and 260 units planned on lots that will be selectively cleared. New phases are also being introduced in the private gated community of Adelaide at the north end of Viera. It can sometimes be understated how vital Viera is to the economic picture on the Space Coast. The community’s development has significantly expanded the County’s tax base and The Viera Company has invested an estimated $250 million in arterial and collector roadways since the groundbreaking of the

community in 1989, effectively building the transportation network in Central Brevard and making connections to the regional roadway system. Viera benefits from a diversified Space Coast economy with high paying job growth in the defense contracting, commercial space, and high-tech industries. In addition, over 10,600 employees work in over 805 businesses located in Viera and that number is growing with additions such as Lincoln, Jaguar & Land Rover which is about to open. There are also the three emerging commercial hubs of Borrows West, Viera Town Center and the Pineda Interchange District that are attracting new commercial and mixed-use development interest. As we move through this season, I welcome all of the new homeowners and businesses that have chosen to call Viera home.
