all is here and in Florida we typically do not see the trees change color or experience a cold snap but we do enjoy fall in similar ways. It can be found in the sound of children laughing when they walk or bike home from school with friends. Menus change as outdoor dining becomes more popular around town. Popular venues, like The Avenue Viera, continue their outdoor music series under the oaks in Central Park (the official name). You can hear the marching bands practice and the lights shine from the football field on Friday nights. For Floridians, you can still play in the pool, kayak or surf all year long. The arts season begins with local performers, having worked hard in rehearsals over the last few weeks, and are ready to sing, dance or perform for you at a local venue. You can see the influence of craft stores in the area that will place holiday merchandise in the front of the store with all the usual oranges, reds and yellows we recognize from the season. The energy picks up too when the days are a little cooler and the local running events, food trucks and carnivals all encourage us to get involved and enjoy the new tastes of the season. In October, the Viera Harvest Festival will be partnering with the Scarecrow Stroll and the event continues to bring a dose of fall fun to families as they walk the festival. Making Strides of Brevard will once again turn a Saturday pink to raise funds during their annual walking event, usually not considered a fall color but I believe we all need to officially adopt it as one. So yes, fall can be seen all around you in all its very Floridian ways. This fall, The Viera Company has once again become the Showcase Community in the annual HBCA Parade of Homes. We encourage you to stop by the Viera Discovery Center to pick up a map and then visit the model homes that are showcased in the parade this October. The model agents can show you the features that continually make them the award-winning builders in our area.

FMA Gala Event: Stephanie Byrd, Editor-in-Chief and Karla Monterrosa-Yancey, President, Florida Magazine Association If you plan to take a trip, you will be surprised by all the changes taking place at our local Melbourne Orlando International Airport. They are busy working on a reconstruction of the terminals and baggage areas with a modern approach for our growing community in Brevard. I’ve flown out of this airport several times over the years and I’m always excited to see our coastal community of Brevard from the air. It really is impressive. Lastly, I have some exciting news to share with our readers. This past summer I was honored to accept two awards for the Viera Vision magazine from the Florida Magazine Association in cover design. The competition includes magazines from every corner of Florida and many from our largest cities. We are both proud and humbled to be included in their company and we will continue to keep each issue relevant and enjoyable for our readers. We encourage everyone to stay safe and here’s to the fun of fall and the pumpkin spice everything we enjoy this time of year.

isten closely and you might just hear a collective sigh of relief across Brevard. It emanates from the Space Coast’s many cultural organizations, the theaters, performing arts venues, galleries and musical groups that struggled valiantly to keep residents connected with culture during the pandemic. Many went online to continue channeling cultural offerings during the looong months of the pandemic. Others sat tight, rehearsing via Zoom. Survival was in the balance for some, but fortunately, everyone is back, and a few, like Titusville Playhouse, have actually emerged with exciting expansion on the horizon.

The area’s premier performing arts venue, the King Center, is in full swing with shows that run the gamut. To ensure badly needed good laughs, the King Center has thoughtfully arranged for comedians such as Kevin James, Lewis Black, Ron White, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood to perform for Brevard this year. Classic rock fans will appreciate the tribute shows to Queen, Cream, the Eagles and Pink Floyd. The legendary Kingston Trio will be here, as will ZZ Top. Even the late Buddy Holly visits the King Center stage, thanks to the American Theatre Guild’s production of his story.

BREVARD COMMUNITY CHORUS Broadway touring companies are doing the rounds, too, with “Rent,” “South Pacific” and the musical version of “An Officer and a Gentleman.” For the holidays, the Cirque Musica “Holiday Spectacular” features world-class Cirque artists performing to beloved holiday tunes. “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas” and “Under the Streetlamp: Hip to the Holidays” offer Christmas cheer in different musical genres. The Brevard Symphony Orchestra and the Space Coast Ballet again join forces for a resplendent version of “The Nutcracker.” BREVARD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

SPACE COAST SYMPHONY “Where will the music take you?” asks the Brevard Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in its season announcement. It will take you “Around the World in 80 Minutes” as the BSO launches its 68th season with a program of familiar light classical works. The orchestra also celebrates John Williams’ 90th birthday with a celebration of the composer’s award-winning scores. Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Berlioz, Copland and many other musical giants are well-represented in next year’s concerts. A very special performance is “Sounds of the Season,” the BSO’s holiday show on Nov. 27th. Most BSO concerts are at the King Center, except for its special free Fourth of July extravaganza, held annually at Riverside Park in Cocoa Village. The music keeps going with groups such as the Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB), a group that celebrates its return to the stage with a concert appropriately titled “We’re Back!” MMB’s season includes a holiday concert and performances celebrating women, the Greatest Generation and the magic of pops, among others. Swingtime, the band’s 22-piece ensemble, plans a full lineup of themed dances at the band’s venue, the Melbourne Auditorium. "The band started rehearsing in May, and I was pleasantly surprised how great they sounded right off the bat," said Staci Rosbury, MMB conductor.

Music is in the air, and plenty of it is of the classical variety, as the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra launch into their 2021-2022 seasons. Among the robust schedule for the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra is “Christmas with Emmet Cahill” on Nov. 27, a concert that showcases the renowned young Irish tenor’s astounding talent. The season also includes the jazzy “Basie on the Beatles,” the annual “Messiah Sing-Along,” “Hooray for Hollywood” and a tribute to the music of the great ballets. Music lovers young and old will love “Land of the Gnomes,” a family-friendly musical experience with storytelling.

6

The very vocal Indialantic Chamber Singers have on their schedule the unique “British Invasion,” a program of British music from royal coronations to the Beatles. Their free concerts will be held at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Indialantic and at Advent Lutheran Church in Suntree.

Brevard Community Chorus has started rehearsals for its “Sounds of the Season” concert Nov. 27th at the King Center. The chorus joins forces with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra for this annual holiday tradition. Jazz aficionados keep their cool with Brevard Music Group’s concerts, which have returned after a yearplus hiatus. This year, BMG will bring events such as “Hotel California, A Salute to the Eagles” and a “Peter White Christmas,” both at the King Center. Funk and soul guitarist Chris Standring will also be here, in a

THE PLAY'S THE THING Theater fans should have a busy year, since it is full steam ahead for the five local playhouses. Titusville Playhouse will be expanding an already busy season by adding the Shuler Stage outdoor venue, part of a major expansion that will create a performing arts complex in North Brevard. “Kinky Boots,” “DreamGirls,” “Tommy,” “A Chorus Line,” “Legally Blonde” and a spate of Cultober classics such as “The Rocky Horror Show” are slated for the stage of the historic Emma Parrish Theatre. They will also be joined by outdoor stage shows such as “The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” On Nov. 12 and 13, the Playhouse will be part of MTI’s “All Together Now,” a history-making global event celebrating theater.

“After a year of social distancing, masks and half capacity seating, we will be back to seating a full theatre,” said executive and artistic director Dominic Del Brocco. The Henegar’s 31st season is its biggest to date, with seven main stage musicals, four of which have never been performed in the county. Although the Viera Studio primarily teaches acting and musical theater to children and adults, the facility also hosts two to three productions a year in its Black Box theater or at the Scott Center for the Performing Arts. The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse, the county’s oldest theater, annually offers its “Broadway on Brevard” series, and the 2021-2022 season is no exception. “Beauty and the Beast,” “West Side Story,” “Holiday Inn” and “Something Rotten!” are among the shows this season. The Playhouse’s Spotlight Series includes the American-themed “Nutcracker” produced by Galmont Ballet, silent film screenings, a rock ‘n roll review, the Playhouse “Playboyz” and scary

The Stars of Tomorrow group add their talent to family shows such as “Aladdin Kids,” “Shrek Jr.” and “Footloose.” Another theater with deep roots in the community is Melbourne Civic Theatre, smack dab in downtown Melbourne. For the coming year, MCT will feature Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Almost Maine,” “Sense and Sensibility,” plus the quintessential British farce “Cash on Delivery.” Beachside, Surfside Playhouse plans a year that includes “Oliver,” “Inherit the Wind,” “A Thousand Clowns” and “Plaza Suite.” The Playhouse, known for its offbeat “fractured” stories, will skewer Alexander Dumas classic swashbuckler tale with “The Three Musketeers Fractured.”

AN EYE FOR ART Visual arts do not get short shrift, since several local galleries host monthly exhibitions. For example, Downtown Art Gallery in Titusville will showcase the works of Linda Krupp, an artist who draws inspiration from her two favorite locales, Brevard and Asheville, North Carolina.

ANGELICA MAKOWSKI

In the spring of each year, Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in the Eau Gallie Arts District hosts its “100% Pure Florida” juried show, which highlights the extraordinary talents of artists from around the state. The gallery is also known for its holiday crafts show. “We invite fine artisans and crafters from across the country to participate in this wonderful collection of handcrafted items, perfect for someone on everyone’s gift list,” said spokesperson Renee Decator. Fifth Avenue’s monthly exhibits often draws themes from the unusual, such as the upcoming “Well Said,” a show in which member artists interpret famous quotes using different mediums. Eau Gallery, just down the street from Fifth Avenue Art Gallery on EGAD’s Highland Avenue, also schedules monthly and often quirky shows such as “A Broad Travels,” a show inspired by female artists’ globetrotting, and “Great Art in CHRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION

T

ucked under a canopy of magnificent live oaks, just steps from bustling Wickham Road, is a place where homeowners’ dreams come true on a daily basis. This is the Viera Builders Design Studio. The impressive “temple of options,” which opened in 2016, is now better than ever after a total remodel in the spring of 2021. “Welcome Home” sign greets future Viera homeowners at its entrance. It is here that the customers ready to build their Viera Builders dream home engage in the most enjoyable aspect of purchasing it: deciding on the personalized elements that make a house a home. The building is designed to make the selection process an enjoyable and memorable experience, from the soaring ceilings to the comfortable seating areas and a spacious lounge where customers can take a break for a snack and a soft drink. All buyers are scheduled for a four-hour time slot---the ultimate shopping trip---to meet with Viera Builders’ designers and select the finishing details for their new home. “They go through all the options, finishes, countertops, cabinets, tile, lighting, etc., and exterior colors with the buyer,” said Mary Mead, Vice President of Sales at Viera Builders. “Design Coordinators are educated to inform the

buyer on different products and recommend finishes to match their lifestyle.” Every home should be a sanctuary, a place to recharge and refresh, no matter the life chapter of its owner. What works for one buyer may not work for another. “An empty nester may not have any concerns over high maintenance finishes, while a young family may want durability and the very least maintenance for their finishes,” said Mead.

“Design Coordinators are educated to inform the buyer on different products and recommend finishes to match their lifestyle.” - Mary Mead The selection process is so comprehensive that buyers are invited to check out the Design Studio before a scheduled appointment in order to get the lay of the land before the extensive, one-on-one design selection session. “We highly encourage that the buyer visit the Studio on Mondays between 11 and 7, when we host a preview time,” said Mead. “This way, they are better prepared for their appointment date, when decisions are a must.” (Disclaimer: Preview Hours are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY until further notice due to COVID.)

The preview sparks the imagination with the possibilities available to personalize the home. During the four-hour selection session, the design consultants will engage the buyer in a discussion of all the details, from the location of electrical outlets to the home’s interior and exterior colors. All members of the talented Design Team are well versed in both timeless classic design and in the current trends. They share their experience to make selecting finishes both efficient and fun. The buyer, however, is ultimately always at the helm. “A lot of people need a little guidance, but we like them to develop their own palette,” said Deborah Gray, Design Studio manager. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the real subject is worth ten thousand. Images are nice, but nothing beats the ability to touch and see the real fixtures, the real carpeting, the real lights, the real countertops. The Design Studio displays these options in distinct zones that address fixtures and hardware, colors, flooring, lighting, roofing, pools and kitchen amenities. In the full-size kitchen vignettes and sample galleries, customers can understand why Aristokraft® and Diamond® cabinetry are considered premier in the industry. They can also see, and touch, the handsome Cambria Quartz® countertops, and examine how possibilities such as 36inch gourmet gas ranges with five burners and griddle, and refrigerators such as the super-smart Samsung RF22R7551SS would enhance their lives. By the way, this Smart fridge connects to Pandora, the television, and offers a “flex-zone” that can be either a fridge or freezer. Homeowners can even access the interior of this fridge remotely from the grocery store for a quick check on what products may need re-stocking. While every Viera community has a unique range of options, flexibility remains a hallmark of Viera Builders. “Most everything is available in every community,” said Gray. Buyers of semi-custom homes at Reeling Park and Stonecrest have enhanced opportunities for personalization of plans though the Viera Builders’ Our Plans. Your Ideas. process, which pairs them with architectural specialists who guide them in designing a floor layout for a perfect lifestyle fit. “This is more detailed, up to three appointments, and it’s modeled after what you see on HGTV,” explained Mead.

22

With this process, walls can come down in a second, at least on the 80-inch flat screen television the design team uses to develop a definitive house plan for each buyer. “Buyers of semi-custom homes can move around any walls that do not affect the footprint of their homes,” said Gray. The television screen serves as the canvas where the final picture of the home’s interior will emerge. “It gives them that HGTV experience,” said Alicia Faessen, Senior Manager of Sales and Design. Faessen incorporated Viera Builders’ cornerstone of quality, integrity, and innovation in the development of the design experience. “Our Design Studio is the culmination of this and incorporates timeless finishes, the latest trends, cutting-edge technology and a personalized experience with one of our design professionals,” she said. “For the buyer, the design appointment is one of the most anticipated milestones of the process and features significantly in their decision to build their dream home with Viera Builders,” said Faessen.

he leaves may not glimmer in shades of orange and bronze and the temperatures may not dip to a crisp coolness, but Viera will definitely enter a fall state of mind in October. The community officially celebrates the arrival of autumn with Viera’s Harvest Festival, an annual tradition launched in 2011 by Viera Voice. Over the years, this popular family activity and event has brought popularity to several sites around Viera, including the longest stretch at The Avenue Viera. This year marks a new direction with both a partnership and a new location of the overall event. “We’re so excited to partner with the Viera Community Institute,” said Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue.

Pumpkin Patch will offer pumpkins of all sizes for purchase. Staying in the pumpkin theme, we’ll have a Pumpkin Chuckin’ contest for kids. Visitors can also bring their pre-carved pumpkins to the event for Viera’s Pumpkin Carving Contest 2021. Look for pumpkin-related food items throughout the festival, as well. Children will have fun with arts and crafts, games, and a photo area to take that perfect fall snapshot with family and friends as a memory of your day. Have a question on farming in Florida? CROWMEISTERS Viera Voice will continue to run its signature event, the Scarecrow Stroll, bringing awareness to community-minded businesses that build creative scarecrows. The Scarecrow Stroll, currently in its 9th year, will be held in conjunction with the festival where attendees can stroll among the scarecrow patch and vote for their favorite. Scarecrows will also be auctioned off, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to a local charity (TBD). Charities that have benefited in the past include the Suntree-Viera Area Association of Churches’ shared food pantry, Children’s Advocacy Center, Devereux, Nana’s House and more. The contest is open to all businesses, families, clubs, and organizations. Registration deadline is October 2nd. The Scarecrow that wins the Popular Vote wins $300! “There is an amazing amount of work and creativity that goes into making the ‘crows,’ and the judges consider all the time, effort and planning that goes into the design when making their final decisions,”

26

Viera's Island Animal Hospital said Stephanie Byrd, marketing manager for The Viera Company. Several dozen ‘crows’ typically pop up for the festival. They are the handiwork of individuals, groups and businesses, all eager to be crowned top ‘crowmeister.’ Through the years, the scarecrows have proven that imagination runs rampant in Viera, beginning with the Scarecrow Stroll’s first winner, Pizza Gallery, and its Vincent Van Crow, a very artsy fellow with a slight hearing issue. He was later joined by a surfer dude ‘crow, a Marley scarecrow, Crowleader cheerleading ‘crow and even a Founding Father in the guise of a straw-filled Benjamin Franklin. There have been Harry Potter ‘crows, a disco ‘crow and a Princess Leia scarecrow with a strong backing from the Force. For their ‘crow entry, the Children’s Hunger Project one year created not one, but several scarecrows in a tableaux of a volunteer ‘crow surrounded by scarecrow kids against a background of a school. The strawintensive assemblage represented the hundreds of volunteers who help provide thousands of at-risk youngsters with a backpack of food to help them get through the weekend. Family Promise of Brevard went off to the Land of Oz for a “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” scarecrow. No, they did not opt for the obvious choice of Dorothy’s Scarecrow, but rather went into a whirlwind of creativity with a tornado ‘crow that spun items such as the Ruby Red Slippers, the Tin Man’s hat and the Cowardly Lion’s heart.

Viera Charter School What will the scarecrows be sporting this year? It’s a secret that will be revealed at the Harvest Festival. Attendees are encouraged to vote for their favorite scarecrow in the Children’s Mini-Crow category, as well as in the Adult and Family Scarecrow and Business Scarecrow divisions. Winners will be announced during the event. “We’re excited to partner with Viera Voice on Viera’s Harvest Festival!” said Widzgowski. “As a part of the Viera Community Institute’s mission, we strive to facilitate educational, environmental, cultural and charitable activities to the Viera community and surrounding areas.” Except for the fact that the leaves will remain green and the thermometer may not dip much below 80, the Harvest Festival offers the same beloved sense of family and community as those great festivals many of us remember from our days up North. Experience how Florida celebrates fall with the Viera’s Harvest Festival and Viera Voice’s Scarecrow Stroll. Happy Fall Everyone! Viera Regional Park is at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way For more information on Viera's Harvest Festival, visit: vieracommunityinstitute.com For entry details on the Scarecrow Stroll, call Viera Voice at 321-242-1235.

MAKING STRIDES IN VIERA

n Saturday, October 23, Liane Brito will leave her Melbourne home well ahead of the sunrise to arrive at The Avenue Viera before 5 a.m. Brito, one of the hundreds of volunteers for the highly successful Making Strides of Brevard held at The Avenue Viera, will then help with the last-minute details for the fundraiser until around 7 a.m., when she will join the 10,000 other men and women expected for the noncompetitive 5k walk. The event is part of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation. Although not as large in numbers as similar Making Strides events in Florida’s more populated metropolitan areas, Making Strides of Brevard is among the top ten fundraisers in the Making Strides statewide network. Health First Cancer Institute is presenting the event this year in Viera. The history of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer spans more than two decades. Communities around the nation unite every October, designated nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to raise funds for

the American Cancer Society initiatives on research, patient support and lifesaving screenings. The event has been part of the Viera community for ten years. “It was held four years at The Avenue Viera, then moved temporarily to the baseball stadium and has been back at The Avenue going on six years,” said Cheryl Sullivan, senior development manager for the American Cancer Society. Brito first attended the Making Strides of Brevard event in 2015. “I like the cause, so I walked with my co-workers as part of the Embraer team,” she said. The next year, Making Strides was to have a very personal significance for Brito. A cancerous lump had been discovered in one of her breasts. She went through a lumpectomy and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, another lump appeared and Brito made the hard decision to undergo a double mastectomy, accompanied by chemotherapy. However, all these serious health issues did not stop her from joining the Making Strides of Brevard activities. In 2018, she even organized her own team, Walking with Li.

29

“I gathered 50 people with me and raised plenty of money,” she said. The fact that she arrived at The Avenue at 5 a.m. just the day after undergoing chemo reflects the commitment of the participants in Making Strides. Honored at the awards ceremony following the walk, Brito walked up the stage and tipped her hat in deference to the volunteers and organizers. “It was the first time I had shown my completely bald head,” she said. The applause was deafening. Because of the pandemic, Making Strides was a virtual event last year, so Brito has two years of pent-up interest and can’t wait to be up again at 5 a.m. on October 23 for her favorite walk. She will walk with the Thriving team of survivors and friends. Michelle Reyes, marketing director for The Avenue Viera, expects a huge turnout for 2021 because, like Brito, many past attendees are raring to go again. Orchestrating the smooth running of such a huge event, the largest outdoor fundraiser in Brevard, requires significant advance planning from The Avenue team. “To ensure the success of Making Strides, we begin planning very early,” said Reyes. “Usually within a couple of weeks of the race, Making Strides has already secured their date for the following year’s event. We keep the lines of communication open and I make sure my whole team is aware of the logistics to finalize the route, prepare the vendor area and complete the event timeline. I also help push the event through our social channels and our A-List e-blasts.” Making Strides of Brevard generates an average of $180,000 for the American Cancer Society, the nation’s nonprofit leader in the fight against breast cancer.

The organization has harnessed more than 100 years of cancer-fighting experience towards breast cancer research, influencing public policy, patient support and ensuring greater access to quality care for cancer patients. Their approach is working. “We’ve witnessed a 41% decline in the female breast cancer death rate,” said Sullivan. While a cure seems attainable, the disease remains the most common type of cancer in women, apart from skin cancer. This year, 281,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. Funds generated through the Making Strides movement allow the American Cancer Society to serve patients when they are at their most vulnerable, even during a global pandemic. As an example of the variety of services accessible to patients, a simple mobile app allows newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to connect with trained breast cancer survivors for support during their journey, regardless of where they may be in the United States. Making Strides of Brevard is not a race. It is a celebration of survivors like Brito and an opportunity to share hope about ending a disease that affects so many women. For Brito and 10,000 other walkers, it is not to be missed.

MLB IS GROWING UP

You’ve heard the one about the Florida state bird, haven’t you? It’s the construction crane.

I

t’s a groaner of a joke, but there is truth in the telling here in Brevard County, where transformation has been steady for most of the past decade. You can’t pick up a local publication without reading a story, or a few, about the new projects being imagined, started, and finished in the County. You can hardly drive anywhere without your GPS recommending a new route over a newly finished roadway or through a newly developed subdivision without wondering, “What ARE they putting up over there?” So many of these projects are great opportunities for the residents. They create exciting possibilities for us all to dine, explore, or shop.

But few projects will have as significant an impact on the county and the greater Central Florida region than what the folks at Melbourne Orlando International Airport, aka MLB, the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) official location code, have cooking. The newest construction project along Air Terminal Parkway in Melbourne finally “went vertical” over the past few weeks and has people talking already. It’s an 80,000 square foot expansion of the airport and terminal building that, along with the newly expanded domestic flight options, not to mention a significant deal with tour operator, TUI Group (Trusted, Unique and Inspiring), will bring 16 weekly flights and 150,000+ visitors from the UK to Melbourne. It is set to lift the profile of our airport facility, as well as the Melbourne area, as a destination.

31

BIGTIME EXPANSION At roughly the scale of two full football fields of indoor space, the renovated terminal facility will be the new home to four additional gates, three sized for wide-body aircraft. Numerous restaurants and retail operations will call the expanded facility home as will the generously expanded passenger lounge areas. As of this writing, details of the contracted concessionaires were still in process, according to Mark Busalacchi, the airport’s Director of Marketing and Business Development, but he could say that there would be numerous local businesses represented as well as regional menu items available to set the stage for visitors searching for a Space Coast experience. “We’ll have some things from businesses you can only get locally here in Melbourne,” Busalacchi said. “Like several of the craft brews and menu items you’d expect to see from a coastal community.”

“We’re continuing to get our air service to where we want it to be,” Busalacchi says, “and this new service from Allegiant Air is pointing us in the right direction.” The Allegiant service offers flights to places never before available from MLB, places many people from our area visited or considered visiting, but were previously only reachable by extended driving trips. Consider that all of this new, affordable travel additional to the ongoing service offered by legacy carriers like Delta and American Airlines, and that MLB is becoming an even more attractive option for residents interested in traveling regionally. Delta offers daily flights to Atlanta while American has regular flights on their schedule to and from Charlotte, North Carolina.

Not everything will change, of course, he said, noting that the current Dunkin Donuts, still a favorite among the current terminal crowd, will continue to call MLB home. “But we’re expanding everything else,” he said, holding the final list of new tenants close to the vest. “It’s a pretty exciting concessions layout that we’re going to present. It’s all new.” PHOTO CREDIT: WALT SIMPSON

“And we’re talking to airlines every single day about providing service to Melbourne,” Busalacchi said. “There isn’t an airline you can think of who we haven’t spoken to in one way or another.”

NEW REGIONAL TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES The nearby location, lack of excess traffic, and convenience has always been an attractive benefit to MLB, not to mention the ease of access to current airport tenants and local employers like Embraer, Northrop Grumman, and L3 Harris. But new regional flights for affordable carrier, Allegiant Air, are opening up options for travelers from the Space Coast to what Busalacchi calls secondary locations like Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Concord, North Carolina (near Charlotte).

32

A new Hyatt Place Hotel is in the offing for MLB. About 140 rooms are planned right on the airport property. A full floor of suites is planned for the top floor, with a rooftop bar and restaurant giving easy access to passengers, crew, employees, and any visitors of the airport’s primary tenants. Designed to have what they call “aeronautical access,” the new Hyatt Place will eventually have flyin, fly-out service for private flights, really lifting the profile of air service to our region.

BRITISH INVASION A well-publicized deal with European travel tour operator TUI Group is one of the top topics of conversation in and around MLB. An expected

That “world-class tenant base” Busalacchi points out is also one reason MLB was able to last through the COVID crisis without any layoffs or furloughs so prevalent across the industry. For Viera residents, MLB is simple and easy to navigate. It’s possible to park your car and be at your gate in under 15 minutes without the delays and hassles common at larger airports. “When I fly out of here for business or even pleasure,” Busalacchi says, “I’m amazed at how quickly everything happens here and how clean it is.”

150,000-175,000 British tourists are expected to be traveling on 16 London flights each week beginning in the spring of 2022, making the “international” part of Melbourne Orlando International Airport a very vibrant reality. “It’s going be great for the community. It’s going to bring so many people who have never been exposed to this area before and now, with the cruise ship operations, it makes a lot of sense for them to fly into Melbourne,” said Busalacchi.

While 2019 saw MLB named one of the most scenic landing approaches in the world, considering the extensive expansion and planning going on inside and out, it should be clear to all of us that it’s not just a pretty face. It is a substantial and serious economic force in our region and a unique and enjoyable travel resource to residents and visitors alike. Where can I get regular news about the airport? Follow @flyMLB on social media:

mlbair.com

TUI operates a substantial cruise ship business under the name Marella Cruises out of Port Canaveral and many of its travelers will book concurrently with their flights to Florida. Previously, TUI flew in and out of Sanford, Florida, which, while attractive for its similar distance from the Orlando theme parks, is substantially farther away from the port.

LOCAL BENEFIT Our local Melbourne Orlando International Airport has always been an economic contributor to our local economy, but with all of this new activity, it’s bound to become something even bigger and better. MLB contributes nearly $3B in annual economic impact to our region. Combine that with a working population of nearly 20,000 people and the fact that 85% of its revenue is generated by its real estate operations and tenants rather than airlines and passenger traffic, and it’s clear that the airport is a clear net positive asset to the region’s economic development.

all is in the air, Viera! This season has started with art offerings and nonprofit events being much more plentiful in our community than they have been in well over a year. The final plans for the family-friendly Harvest Festival at Viera Regional Park are coming together, a Parade of Homes will feature Viera as the Showcase Community, and more new developments continue to enrich our centrally coastal and conveniently master planned community of Viera. The arts highlight the vast creativity and culture in our community. Among the many events occurring throughout Viera this fall is the Space Coast Art Festival which will take place at The

Avenue Viera on October 16 and 17, 2021. Artists are jury-selected and hail from locations throughout the nation and beyond. The Viera Harvest Festival is also scheduled for October 16, 2021 at the Viera Regional Park and will feature various children’s activities,

There are many worthy nonprofits in our community holding events this fall, such as the American Cancer Society with its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk to be held the morning of October 23, 2021 at The Avenue Viera. The Viera Company has been a longtime sponsor of the walk which is one of Brevard County’s largest events. In addition, this is my sixth consecutive year participating as a Real Men Wear Pink candidate, joining other business and community leaders, to bring awareness and raise funds in the fight against breast cancer. I have already exceeded my personal goal to raise $20,000 for the cause during this campaign. Breast cancer can affect everyone – women and men – and has not taken a break during the recent pandemic. This is a devastating disease that impacts far too many individuals, families, friends and communities. Many have had a family member or friend that has dealt with breast cancer and we know that there is much more that needs to be done in this fight. The support raised through these efforts can help make a difference to those affected right here in Viera and throughout the Space Coast. As the Showcase Community for this fall’s Parade of Homes, brought to you by the Home Builders and Contractors Association of Brevard (HBCA), Viera will draw attention to the vibrant, active outdoor and innovative lifestyle offered as one of the top 20 best-selling master planned communities in the country. The Beautiful Homes Tour will run from October 1 through October 10, 2021 with local builders, suppliers and craftsmen promoting a variety of inspiring designs at a wide range of price points for the public to enjoy.

Construction of the new Lincoln, Jaguar and Land Rover dealership adjacent to I-95 is progressing toward a mid-2022 opening following its recent groundbreaking, and the state of the art Sonata East at Viera independent living and memory care community, located between USSSA Space Coast Stadium and the VA Clinic, just held its grand opening. These new businesses elevate luxury living and transportation options available in Viera. Additional residential neighborhoods south of Wickham Road and near Pineda are also under development and on the near-term horizon. After celebrating 32 years since the groundbreaking of Viera in August and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to the committed team of professionals at The Viera Company for their dedicated efforts day in and day out. I also want to thank our government officials and their staff, Brevard Public Schools, the Economic Development Commission, chambers of commerce, local churches and nonprofits, all of the other private and public sector leaders we partner with throughout the Space Coast, as well as each of the residents and businesses that have chosen to call Viera home, for the important role you all play in the growth and success of our community.
