TRACY DUDA CHAPMAN IS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE VIERA COMPANY AND GENERAL COUNSEL TO A. DUDA & SONS, INC.
As I promised in the March issue of Viera Vision, this issue will provide additional insights into our community’s beginnings and highlight more of Viera’s growth milestones as we celebrate the community’s 25th anniversary year. For instance, did you know that the Brevard Zoo is celebrating its 20th birthday? In our business spotlight on page 26, Zoo Executive Director Keith Winsten shares the many ways he believes Viera and the Zoo are partners for a successful future. It was over 18 years ago when founding veterinarians Linda Madyda and Sandy Helpling made a faithful decision to locate their Viera East Veterinary Center in our fledgling community. Their bold move was a success. Learn how they grew their practice in “Pioneering Pet Health in Viera,” a sidebar to our health spotlight on page 25. In 2001, Ralph Williams Elementary opened its doors to students in Viera. Since then, how many years do you think the school has maintained a Florida Grade “A” level of performance? The answer is 13 years — every year the school has been open! On page 29, in “Cynthia Ford: A Success Story,” learn how founding Principal Ford’s opportunity to open this school resulted in the quality of education that its students continue to receive.
It was only nine years ago when the welcome Duran Golf and Country Club became a reality. In our cover story, “A Vision Comes to Life: Duran Golf and Country Club,” learn how the golf club, an exceptional amenity for our community, has become an award winning facility offering a world class development center. Finally, through careful planning, Viera’s growth has brought to life a community full of amenities that matter to our residents. In turn, Viera has attracted residents that care about our community and want to see it thrive. You will meet several of these residents in “Viera School Volunteers Make the ‘A’ Grade” on page 32. And, in “Why I love Living in Viera,” you will meet Noor Tawfik who leads the Ladies Conservation Crew — a group of women committed to keeping Viera beautiful. I hope you enjoy reading this second celebration issue of Viera Vision. If you have a chance, please stop by the Zoo and wish them a happy birthday too!

COMES TO LIFE
VI E R A . c om 9
VIERA coverstory The Duda family has always had great vision for Viera and the strategic planning ability to foresee future growth. This is especially true when it comes to the local golf course located on the eastern side of Viera. As the Viera community grew, developers envisioned thriving golf clubs to the east and to the west. “I can remember driving on a sod field where the community planners spread their arms and pointed out exactly where the Duran golf course would be and how it would be designed,” said David Tomczak, general manager for Duran Golf Club. “When I heard the vision and started to see it come to life, I became a believer in a hurry,” Tomczak added.

TOMCZAK ARRIVES IN VIERA
Five years before the Duran Golf Club was built, Tomczak was hired as general manager for the Viera East Golf Club. He heard about the opportunity through a newspaper ad calling for a PGA golf pro with management experience. “I had just finished 10 years at the Sweetwater Golf & Country Club in Longwood and the timing was just right, so I drove over to the Space Coast to take a look. I immediately had a love affair with Viera. I was impressed not only with the vision for the golf club but also because I share the same core values as I saw in the Duda family,” Tomczak said.
Tomczak is a 35-year member of the PGA of America whose extensive golf career has taken him around the country where he has had the opportunity to play golf with several top PGA tour professionals, such as Chris DiMarco, Payne Stewart and Tiger Woods. Tomszak started working at Viera East Golf Club in 1999. “At that time, Viera was in the midst of ongoing, unprecedented real estate growth,” said Tomczak. Tomczak says he worked very closely with the Viera East Community Development District on day-to-day management of the golf facility, and he worked closely with the men’s and ladies’ golf associations to develop a well-rounded program for club members and the residents of Viera. “I enjoyed the time I spent at Viera East. I developed some wonderful relationships with many residents through the events we hosted and
VIERA coverstory as a golf instructor at the club. During my time at the club, the course conditions improved significantly, helping the club to gain a reputation as the top facility in Brevard County,” said Tomczak.
DURAN GOLF CLUB
In 2004, Tomczak was approached by The Viera Company to help develop the Duran Golf Club. “It was exciting to be part of this project and to see it come to life. While many towns start out small and grow out, the infrastructure is not there to support that growth. Those developers never plan 10, 20 or 30 years into the future. But that is not the case in Viera where The Viera Company already had its 20-year plan in place before the community was built,” Tomczak said. “This is why I love Viera — it is great to be part of a vision and to watch it come to life,” Tomczak added.
WORLD CLASS CLUB
What singles out Duran Golf Club from other golf facilities in the area is the award-winning World Class Development Center, which offers the largest and most comprehensive practice facilities in the area. The facility includes an expansive practice range, short game area, and the popular nine-hole “Par 3 Course” that encircles the practice facility. Best of all, the entire facility is illuminated for evening use until 9 p.m. This facility features the Duran Academy of Golf, offering a full time staff of PGA instructors who are available year-round to help golfers of all skill levels. The Golf Range Association of America also recently recognized Duran as a “U.S. Top 50” public practice facility.
NEW GOLF PRO
Duran recently hired a new director of instruction for the Duran Academy of Golf. Justin Blazer is a seasoned golf pro who will be responsible for the development of instructional programs for golfers of all skill levels. Blazer’s main focus will be on juniors looking to develop the top program in the area. Many of his juniors have had tremendous success and currently compete at elite levels such as the U.S. Kids World Championships and other premier junior golf championships. This work has not gone unnoticed; Blazer has been awarded a two-time U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 Teacher, which recognizes the top junior golf instructors in the country. Blazer has also appeared in instructional videos on GolfWeek.com and FoxSports.com and other popular publications and blogs. He serves as both a U.S. Kids Golf certified instructor specializing in teaching, fitting and

competition for ages 6-12. Additionally, he is one of only 14 Aimpoint Certified Level 2 Instructors in the world, which enables him to teach students on the finer points of putting, including how to read greens and accurately predict break. “Duran is very fortunate to have a professional of Blazer’s level to head the instructional programs. We look forward to the valuable addition he will make to the Golf Academy at Duran,” said Tomczak.
COMPANY MISSION
Duran’s corporate mission is to provide the highest level of facility, conditions, programs and customer service possible. Reader polls from Florida Today, and Hometown News have recognized Duran Golf Club as the Top Golf Course on the Space Coast. Duran has also recently received national recognition from the Golf Range Association of America (GRAA), earning its “Top 50” Award of the country’s public practice ranges. “We are flattered to receive the
12 V IE RA VI S I O N
recognitions we have this past year. The readers’ poll awards tell us the locals appreciate the effort we put forth to provide them a quality facility and programs to enjoy. We are also honored to bring national recognition to the Space Coast with the GRAA Top 50 award. This told us our vision to create a ’family and community focused’ facility of this level was on target,” said Tomczak. While dedication to good service, conditions and programs has made the Duran Golf Club a favorite among golfers near and far, the Tradewinds Restaurant at Duran has also become a popular destination for specialty events and wedding receptions. The Tradewinds also offers a daily lunch and a wonderful Sunday Brunch.
STEWARDS OF THE LAND
“The vision of our parent company, to be good stewards of the land, is a philosophy that our entire staff lives and believes in,” said Tomczak. Duran recently received certification from the Audubon Cooperative
Sanctuary Program for Environmental Planning. This is the first of several certifications achieved to gain membership in the Audubon program. Other certifications currently in the works include wildlife and habitat management, water quality and conservation, and golfer education. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses provides an advisory service to help existing golf courses develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs. This worldwide effort is coordinated by Audubon International and is sponsored in part by the United States Golf Association. “Being good stewards of the land is very important to the staff at Duran. Our employees work very hard to make sure that great care is taken to ensure the habitat is well managed for wildlife and the residents of the surrounding communities,” said Tomczak. Tomczak also points out that the name Duran was developed from the words DUDA (DU) and RANCH (RAN),
whose cattle and sod farm previously operated on the golf course property.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Tomczak has served on fundraising committees with his church, St. John the Evangelist, and the American Cancer Society, and he has worked directly with numerous groups at Duran who come to the club looking to raise much needed funds for their charities. Tomczak has also been actively involved in the promotion of golf and tourism on the Space Coast. He currently serves as the President of the Florida Space Coast Golf Association, and he serves on the Executive Board of the Melbourne Regional Area Chamber of Commerce, along with chairing the Chamber Visitors Bureau. Tomczak says he is passionate about the effort to keep the Washington Nationals and the Brevard Manatees here in Viera. He believes the presence of these teams is very important for the social health and financial well being of the county.
AN ONGOING LOVE AFFAIR
Tomczak says he has had an ongoing “love affair” with Viera. For the first five years of his employment, he made a daily 65-mile trek from his home in Apopka to the Space Coast. “I didn’t mind the drive because I loved my work and knew I would someday make Viera my home,” Tomczak said. Tomczak moved to Viera in 2005 with his wife Deborah, who is a real estate agent for Viera Realty. The couple has two daughters, one that works in London, and the other living in Orlando with her husband and two children.

VIERA EAST GOLF CLUB
Celebrates 20 Years As Viera celebrates its 25th anniversary, the Viera East Golf Club serves not only as an attractive amenity for local residents, but also as a popular golfing destination for those who visit the Space Coast. For the visionaries who developed Duda ranchland into a beautiful, modern community — the Viera East Golf Club was always part of the plan. The Club opened in 1994. It was designed and built by one of golf’s most revered designers, Joe Lee, who is a Florida-based architect. Dave Tomczak, who now serves as general manager for the Duran Golf Club, was hired in 1999 to help develop the Viera East Golf Club and to serve as its general manager. He recalls the community planners waving their arms with excitement while pointing out every detail of the new golf course. “From the beginning, golfing has been one of the Viera community’s greatest assets,” said Tomczak. Today, David Buth is the Viera East Club’s general manager. Buth came to Viera East Golf Club two years ago after a long history of success at several other Central Florida golf clubs. “Having been in the golf management business for the better part of the past 25 years, I am honored to be involved with a quality facility like Viera East,” said Buth. Viera East Golf Club is located at 2300 Clubhouse Drive in Viera. For business hours, upcoming events and more information please call (321) 639-6500 or visit VieraGolf.com.

PHIL VASSAR HIGHLIGHTS VIERA’S GREAT AMERICAN CELEBRATION It’s going to be a spectacular patriotic summer celebration when musical artist Phil Vassar comes to town, highlighting Viera’s 20th Annual Fourth of July festivities.
Vassar continues to churn out incisive, soulful lyrics and infectious melodies that capture the heart and soul. His latest single, “Love Is Alive,” is no exception.
This year’s Great American Celebration is expected to be the biggest and best ever! The 20th anniversary event will be an evening of summer enjoyment for everyone, including a Brevard County Manatees baseball game and a magnificent fireworks display, as well as a special concert by famous singer/songwriter Phil Vassar.
“Songs should evoke something, whether it makes you happy and puts you in a good mood, or makes you cry and feel desperation…whatever it is… songs should evoke something,” Vassar remarked recently. “I’ve had hits with every kind of song – ballads, mid-tempos, up-tempos and silly kinds of songs. You can’t save the whales with every song you write, that’s too heavy for me, but I honestly don’t think I’ve written my best songs yet.”
The concert takes place Saturday, July 5, 2014 on the grounds of Calvary Chapel of Melbourne, adjacent to the Space Coast Stadium in Viera. The baseball game starts at 6:30pm with the fireworks show starting at approximately 9:15pm. The Concert begins at the conclusion of the fireworks show. Tickets for the Great American Celebration are $30 each and go on sale May 15. Promoters say Vassar is as driven today as he was when he first left his Lynchburg, Virginia home to pursue – and realize – his dream of making his mark in entertainment. Vassar has seen the release of eight albums. He has been awarded two ASCAP Songwriter of the Year trophies and a Billboard Country Songwriter of the Year. As a singer/songwriter, Vassar hit the Top 5 seven times with songs like “Carlene,” “Last Day of My Life” and “American Child.” He also topped the charts with “In A Real Love” and “Just Another Day in Paradise.” Over the years he has earned industry recognition as one of Nashville’s top tunesmiths. Vassar penned songs that other artists have taken to number one, including: “My Next Thirty Years” by Tim McGraw, “She’s Right On The Money” by Alan Jackson, and Jo Dee Messina’s “Bye, Bye” and “I’m Alright.” New artist David Nail also had a hit with Vassar’s “The Sound of a Million Dreams,” which Billboard named the number one song in their Top 10 Country Songs of 2012.
14 V IE RA VI S I O N
Years of playing clubs, and even owning his own nightspot at one point, helped Vassar cultivate his easygoing, fun-loving manner, which he inevitably displays onstage. His performance energy is said to be infectious. When not on the road performing, Vassar can be found picking up his two daughters from school and spending the afternoon just being “Dad.” His heart for children extends well beyond his immediate family. Last year marked the sixth year he has performed a benefit concert for The Miller Home for girls in his hometown. Vassar has also been a featured artist on Charlie Daniels’ annual Christmas 4 Kids concert, and he regularly lends his time, talent and name to organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Second Harvest Food Bank and more.

Shopping in Viera keeps getting better with the addition of two new stores.
T.J.MAXX & HomeGoods The grand opening for T.J.Maxx and its companion store, HomeGoods, was held on May 1, 2014. The stores are located off Lake Andrew Drive, just south of the Kohl’s department store and The Avenue Viera retail complex.
T.J.MAXX
With more than 1,000 stores nationwide, T.J.Maxx is well known for offering name-brand clothing at affordable prices. In addition to men’s, women’s and children’s apparel and shoes, the store offers toys, bath and beauty supplies, accessories and home products ranging from furniture to kitchen wares. According to T.J.Maxx corporate officials, Viera was selected for the new store due to its growth and other favorable aspects. Brittany Welsh, public relations supervisor for parent company TJX Companies, Inc. explained, “When we open new stores, we look for areas with the right mix of demographics, which can include families with children,
home ownership, thriving retail areas, and areas where shoppers are styleconscious, yet value-conscious.” Hiring for the new store is well underway. A corporate spokesperson said the new store will staff about two dozen employees. Founded in 1976, in Framingham, Mass., T.J.Maxx is owned by TJX Companies, Inc., which is also the parent company of HomeGoods/HomeSense and Marshalls in the United States and Canada.
BREVARD’S FIRST HOMEGOODS STORE
Brevard County already has two T.J.Maxx stores, but this will be the first HomeGoods store in the central Brevard area. While T.J.Maxx is more associated with clothing and fashion, HomeGoods focuses its inventory on what it calls “distinctive home fashions” at up to 60 percent off department and specialty store prices. HomeGoods offers exclusive home fashions with a broad and fresh array of
exciting products from around the world, such as giftware, home basics, table-top decor, accent furniture, lamps, rugs, bath and bedding, decorative accessories, children’s furniture, seasonal décor and other household items. According to HomeGoods advertising, store buyers travel the globe, searching for one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted merchandise with new shipments arriving weekly. The store boasts of a high-end designer selection with something to offer in every style for every room. Owned by TJX Companies, Inc., HomeGoods was introduced in 1992. By the end of 2012, there were 415 HomeGoods stores in the U.S. and company officials believe the stores will continue to have significant growth, supporting as many as over 800 stores over the long term. ARRIVAS VILLAGE
courtyard living in Arrivas Village
A large internal courtyard highlights the architectural design of homes in Arrivas Village. These detached Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND) homes are being built within walking distance to The Avenue Viera. “At Arrivas Village, we are building homes around courtyards and including large covered private areas in the center of the home. The bedrooms and living room all wrap around this large private area,’’ said Bill Moore, Chief Operating Officer of Viera Builders. “Because these are zero-lot line homes, we designed them to focus around a center courtyard to create privacy. The neighbor who borders your courtyard has no windows on this side 18 V IE RA VI S I O N
of his home so he’s not able to look into your courtyard. The courtyards are accessible from the front and back of the home,’’ Moore said. “The design is unique to Brevard because the courtyard feature is more substantial than most developments offer,” he said. “Exterior paint and landscaping will all be maintained but the interior courtyards will be resident-maintained so they can personalize the area. It really does incorporate an outdoor living space. A lot of it is covered and there are ceiling fans to keep you cool,’’ Moore said. Neighborhood amenities at Arrivas Village include pergolas for shade,
located in green areas throughout, and additional parking around walking trails. The community is located just across Lake Andrew Drive from The Avenue Viera retail center. Options include a bonus room over the two-car garage and a small garage for a golf cart. Moore said he’s excited to bring new types of housing to Viera in Arrivas Village. “When you create something new there is always an opportunity to improve the design during the construction process,” he said. “We’ve made some tweaks and changes to fine-tune the design before releasing it for sale, which we’ll do very soon. It’s turned out really well.’’

Stadium Villas offers 67 attached townhomes using Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND) and incorporating internal courtyards. Built in three-, five and seven-unit buildings, this neighborhood is located north of Viera Boulevard, next to the Publix shopping center. The internal courtyard feature offers residents a variety of decorating options, including outdoor fireplaces and water features. “It’s an outdoor living space and allows natural light into the interior of the home. Residents will feel like they’re in a freestanding home,’’ said Bill Moore, Chief Operating Officer of Viera Builders. The design of Stadium Villas, known as Spanish Colonial, takes its architectural cues from Florida’s

oldest city, St. Augustine. “The Spanish settled St. Augustine first and they built one-story homes. The British settled it second, and over the top of the first floor, they placed more traditional siding — known as Tudor style. Stadium Villas incorporates a mixture of both of these styles,” he said. Each unit has a two-car garage located in the rear of the home that can be accessed from an alleyway. The front of the home is designed with curb appeal since the space is not being used for a garage. This neighborhood will have a community pool for its residents’ use. “These lots are smaller and do not allow room for individual pools, so we are building a private community pool
for their use,” said Moore. Proximity to shopping is another key amenity for Stadium Villas. Within walking distance, residents will have access to grocery shopping, a gas station, restaurants and an animal hospital. Parking in the rear of TND communities can often be limited, but plans for Stadium Villas have addressed this issue. “We have a 20-foot-long driveway in the rear, so residents can still park behind their home, but we also have a lot of on-street parking in designated areas throughout the community,’’ Moore said. This type of development has been done in other areas of Florida, but this is the first time it has been built in Brevard County.

STROM PARK
bringsasplash Strom Park
New ideas for outdoor fun are incorporated in Strom Park. Using Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND), this 343-home neighborhood is located just south of Viera Hospital across from Quest Elementary School. For the kids, there’s a new way to enjoy Florida’s warm weather while cooling off. The tradition of having a community swimming pool has taken a new turn. “The lots in Strom Park are large enough for owners to put in their own pool. So, instead of doing a community pool, we’re building a splash park with a tot lot next to it. We think it will get a whole lot more use,’’ said Bill Moore, Chief Operating Officer of Viera Builders. “For those who enjoy walking and biking, there is an extensive network of

trails that provide connectivity with all adjacent communities and roads,” he said. More than just sidewalks, the trails offer recreational opportunities that begin at your front yard. “There are miles of trails going around the area, through the wooded areas, around lakes, through the nature preserves and to the amenities. These are trails that have connectivity throughout the community,’’ Moore said. The outdoor recreational needs of pets are also being addressed. A dog park will be located near Strom Park for community use. Strom Park incorporates two new housing products designed using the concept of TND. “Smaller 50-foot lots will place visual priority on the front of the home,” Moore said. “The garage is not the most
prominent — the front porch is — and the garage is recessed.’’ Strom Park’s larger 60-foot lots offer homes with a more traditional Florida architecture style and have three-car garages. All single-story plans have an economical bonus room option for the extra space over the three-car garage. “Because you’re just building over the garage it’s less expensive for the homeowner. Most configurations have a full bath and some with living areas. It could be an area for the kids, or a large office or exercise room. We’ve seen it used in a variety of ways,” he said.’

FROM MANAGER, CLAY ARCHEY We all enjoy the natural beauty of Brevard County and we all wish to maintain its beauty and environmental integrity. The many sparkling lakes and ponds that you see throughout Viera are working to do just that. They are part of the planned master storm water treatment system for the community, providing hundreds of acres of treatment ponds that serve to filter storm water as it flows back into the natural environment. As a homeowner or a business owner, you are also responsible to help protect our community’s natural environment. Brevard County’s new fertilizer ordinance outlines the steps you are required by law to take as you care for your lawns and landscape. Here are a few of those requirements:
happiness is an
EXCEPTIONAL smile
Q: Can I place fertilizer within 15 feet of the pond/lake in my back yard? A: No. Fertilizer shall not be applied within fifteen (15) feet of any surface waters -- ponds, streams, watercourses, lakes, canals, or wetlands. Q: What if I am installing a new yard? A: A newly planted and landscaped yard has a 60-day grace period for grow-in starting 30 days after planting, if needed, to allow the plants to become well established. Q: Can I use any fertilizer? A: Only “No Phosphate Fertilizer” as defined in the ordinance may be applied to turf or landscape plants in the County unless a soil or plant tissue deficiency has been verified by a University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences approved testing methodology. Nitrogen fertilizer with a guaranteed analysis label of not less than 50 percent slow release, controlled release, timed release, slowly available, or water insoluble nitrogen is also permitted. Q: Is there a period of time during which fertilizer application is banned? A: Yes. Fertilizer is not allowed to be applied during the rainy season which is stated in the ordinance as June 1 – September 30. For more information on recently passed Brevard County Fertilizer Ordinances, please visit the University of Florida’s Brevard County Extension Office website at Brevard.ifas.ufl.edu.

Healthy Opportunity for
VIERA VETERINARIANS
K
eeping pets healthy in the Viera area is a growing job for several veterinarians in the community who urge owners to also take part in the process through education and good owner habits. Important aspects of pet health require effort on the part of the pet owners, according to Veterinarian Linda Madyda of Viera East Veterinarian Center. “The animal exam is one of the most important tasks because that’s where we can pick up issues before they’re actually problems. We can find markers that alert us down the line to look for things like dental health,’’ she said. Most veterinary practices in the area see predominantly dogs — probably 70 percent — with cats making up the difference. According to Madyda, “People own cats but they don’t necessarily bring them in.” Law requires some preventative 24 V IE RA VI S I O N
“I think the demographic is shifting to a more mixed population of both younger families and retirees. Both are pet friendly, but it’s great to have families coming in.” medicines such as rabies vaccines but there are other dangers to pets that require regular attention at home by their owners. “Obviously, vaccines are important,” says Madyda, “but Florida and Louisiana are the top states for animal heart disease, so there is a need for you to give regular heartworm medication.’’ Viera residents most often meet the heartworm medication requirement because, “they pride
themselves on being good and responsible pet owners,” she said. “I would say because our clientele are so compliant with heartworm prevention, we don’t see as much of it as the rest of Florida.” “Flea prevention throughout the year is also important for overall pet health,” said veterinarian Ian Birkbeck who practices at Island Animal Hospital at Viera. “We’ve had tons of fleas in the last month
or so, but I think flea prevention year-round is really important. Heartworm disease is not as common here, but is much more serious, so you want to make sure they’re covered for that as well,’’ he said. Veterinarians agree that pet maintenance is important because the stakes are high when it comes to these extended family members. “Most clients in our practice see pets as an extension to their family,’’ said Viera East’s veterinarian, Sandy Helpling. “Sometimes it’s their only companion, especially if they’re older and widowed. They become their lifeline. Pets have been proven through research to actually extend older people’s lives by lowering their blood pressure and giving them something to look forward to each day. Having a pet in many cases keeps their minds busy,’’ shared Helpling. According to Helpling, “This (Viera) is a fabulous place to have a veterinary practice. I think the demographic is shifting to a more mixed population of both younger families and retirees. Both are pet friendly, but it’s great to have families coming in.” “Having more clients, of all ages, is a future that seems bright,” adds Birkbeck. “We’re nestled in a big residential area and the population is growing. They are going to need more veterinarian services.”
PIONEERING
Pet Health Viera East Veterinary Center could be considered a Viera pioneer, especially on the east side of I-95. The newness of the area was the draw for founding veterinarians Linda Madyda and Sandy Helpling. “When we opened in April of 1996, nobody drove past and there was nothing across the street,’’ Madyda said. Veterinarians grow their business predominately by word of mouth and referral. Because development had just begun, it was a humble start. But as they knew, more residents and pets were soon to come. “We started with dozens. Now, in the almost 20 years we’ve been here, we’re up to almost 11,000 clients,’’ Madyda exclaimed.

T
he history and growth of Brevard Zoo and the town of Viera are inseparable. Consider that A. Duda and Sons provided the land for both, setting the anchor for what is now a bustling commercial center surrounded by quiet residential communities. The main zoo property, a donation from DUDA, is 56 acres, plus 21 acres of wetlands. DUDA is expected to donate another large tract adjacent to and south of the zoo for zoo-related activities. As the zoo celebrates 20 years, Executive Director Keith Winsten explained how the formula for both the zoo and Viera has proven so successful. It centers on three main concepts: 26 V IE RA VI S I O N

1. SELF-SUFFICIENCY
“The zoo’s founding mothers and fathers really had a vision, which is that it would earn its own way. We don’t get any public operating costs. That’s really one of the pieces that have made us entrepreneurial from day one. We’ve always had to function like a small business,” said Winsten. The real advantage for the zoo is the location. According to Winsten, “They could not have given us a better location. It’s right in the middle of the county, off I-95 and Wickham Road. It’s the middle. There’s nobody in Brevard County that says we’re too hard to get to.” The zoo’s proximity to Orlando also is a plus. “We’re in the shadows of the theme parks, which is very important because it allows us to contrast ourselves to them. They’re a full day. We’re a half-day. They’re about fantasy. We’re about authentic Florida. They’re very expensive so we seem very reasonable.”
young AT heart
2. INNOVATION
“We’ve innovated as we’ve grown. Just as the DUDA Company has transformed itself from vegetables to sod to land development, we’ve also had to look at ourselves. We’ve looked at what’s gone on in the attractions industry and what’s happened to people’s leisure time. People are looking for authentic experiences,’’ said Winsten. Examples include the children’s area and Treetop Trek for ages 10 and up. “We’re always looking for the next attraction and innovating and changing,’’ he said. For example, electronic menu boards provide menu flexibility, and a lodge, opened in 2007, is now one of the most popular wedding venues in the county.
3. CONSERVATION
“Our mission is wildlife conservation through education and participation, and I think people really feel that here.” A quarter of admission costs goes to a conservation project chosen each year. “We’ve been taking almost every fourth grader out into the Indian River Lagoon for the last 15 years and now we’re front and center on oyster restoration and work with beach mice, endangered butterflies and mangroves. We do conservation all over the world but our focus is right here in Florida,’’ said Winsten.
FUTURE PLANS
“The zoo’s future looks bright but now needs direction,” Winsten said. “Our dreams are bigger now but we always want to stay a half day experience. We’re going to get a sense of where the community wants us to grow because the community is so important to us. It’s a great juncture to do it.’’

mages of the Sandhill Crane, the school mascot for Ralph Williams Elementary, are infused throughout the campus of the school. These grand birds thrive in a community environment and are often considered signs of peace. They are a fitting image for the leader of the flock at Ralph Williams. Principal Cynthia Ford is a force to be reckoned with, and after more than 40 successful years in the education arena, this summer she will be handing in her badge for good and retire from the Brevard Public School system. Principal Ford is passionate about education and a zealous champion for her students and staff. There simply are not enough words to describe the impact she has had on her school and the community. Lisa Haney, a parent at Ralph Williams, says, “Mrs. Ford’s years of hard work and dedication will forever be cherished at Ralph Williams. She will be missed!” On July 31, Ford will hand over the leadership reins and leave behind a successful, flourishing school that she helped bring to life. After graduating with a master of arts in education from the University of Alabama in 1973, Ford began her career in the Brevard County Public School system. Her work with exceptional students eventually led to her role as Principal of Hans Christian Anderson Elementary, and from there, she was selected as the founding principal 30 V IE RA VI S I O N
of Ralph Williams Elementary. She describes her role in the founding of the school as “one of the most gratifying opportunities and memories of my professional career.” Ford was given the opportunity to hand-select her faculty and staff and, in doing so, Ralph Williams has maintained a Florida Grade “A” level of performance for 13 consecutive years. With her team assembled, Ralph Williams became a school of “collaboration among parents and staff.” This collaboration has created a unique educational environment that is comprised of open and honest communication between teachers, students, and parents. Since opening in 1999, much attention has been given to Ralph Williams Elementary and its leader. In 2012, Ford was recognized by the Florida After School Alliance (FASA) as Administrator of the Year for her dedication to after school programming. Although the awards and recognition are gratifying, Ford says, “It is not about the person.” Reluctant to speak of her own accomplishments, she continually brings the conversation back to her faculty. “It’s all about the teachers,” she says with a thoughtful smile. Empowering her teachers is something that she does with intention and determination. More than anything she wants people to know how hard they work. She says teachers do so
much more than teach. “They are busy managers. They need to be everything,” she explains. Teachers are tasked with the responsibility of classroom management, keeping up with changing technology, and being effective communicators. Principal Ford has worked tirelessly to equip her faculty and staff with the knowledge, ability, and confidence they need in order to keep up with the demands of teaching in today’s educational climate — and it shows! When asked what she considers a marker of her administrative success she quickly responds that knowing “my school can and will run without me” as all the proof she needs. What is abundantly clear is that Principal Ford loves her school. She takes pride in her faculty and staff. She loves administration because, as she puts it, “the ripples are bigger.” She likes being on-site and creating a school culture comprised of “collaboration, communication, and high expectations.” “As a parent, I was pleased to have my children in Williams Elementary. Mrs. Ford hires the most qualified teachers, which results in a high performing school,” said Brevard School Board Member, Karen Henderson. Ford loves her students and welcomes parental involvement. She believes in community and has developed a thriving one at the school. She has created an environment
VIERA where relationships are the key and therefore communication and positivity thrive. PTO President Linda Davis says, “Mrs. Ford is a genuine, lovely person. She is passionate about her profession, our students and our school. Her patient, calm-ina-storm personality gently leads and greatly inspires.” Ford’s mission in education has been to equip others with knowledge, compassion, and the ability to think and act for themselves no matter the circumstances. She created an atmosphere where all parties felt heard and communicated with; reaching the best solution possible for all involved. Collaboration has been at the heart of her approach to everything.
Ford has also played a significant role in connecting her school with the Viera community. The Viera Women’s Club has adopted Ralph Williams Elementary and created events catered specifically to the school. One project near and dear to Principal Ford’s heart is the celebrating literacy campaign. One year, renowned children’s author Kate Messner was brought in via Skype for a live video author’s meet and greet to the delight of the students. Always looking for ways to partner with local businesses and develop relationships with them, another example is the relationship Ralph Williams has with the Sherriff’s Association. This partnership has provided bicycles for students in need at the school.
feature
“She is passionate about her profession, our students and our school.” Principal Ford’s touch is everywhere throughout the school. In the halls, student artwork is hung from clothespins she has personally decorated and in the administrative offices you will find repurposed vases she has made in her spare time. She is everywhere. With retirement on the horizon, Ford is looking forward to the “opportunity to repurpose” her life. Applying the same creativity that has defined her professional life, she plans on “digging her cares away in her garden” and looking for ways to fulfill her need to create something new from something old. She is also “looking forward to the freedom from schedules.” She doesn’t have much on her agenda apart from spending time with family and finds the prospect of retirement “an exciting phase of life with unknown possibilities.” Her plan is “not to plan” and, instead, enjoy each day, come what may. “Her legacy will continue at Ralph Williams Elementary, though we will miss her steady support and caring ways,” says Linda Davis. Without a doubt, Principal Ford has left her mark on Ralph Williams Elementary and everyone she has come into contact with. VI E R A . c om 31

Nancy Dudley is the current PTO treasurer and has been a room mom for six different teachers. She feels rewarded when she walks down the halls of the school, and children say hello to her by name. Paula Dribble is another exceptional volunteer at Manatee. Helping celebrate teachers during the 2012 Teacher Appreciation Week was a highlight for her. Paula says her inspiration comes from the overwhelming desire to give back to the teachers and to the school providing her children with the gift of an amazing education.
QUEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Quest Elementary volunteers have accrued almost 6,000 volunteer hours so far this year.
Pam Blackman has been serving Quest since her son started attending in 2009. She does everything from filing papers to creating bulletin boards for classrooms. The children are what inspire her to give of her time. “I just want to give back to the community and what better way than working with kids because, after all, they are our future.”
RALPH WILLIAMS ELEMENTARY
Linda McDaniel loves volunteering. “She comes in daily — and faithfully,” says Jeanie Geremia of Ralph Williams Elementary. Linda has served in many capacities but enjoys sharing her love of books with students in the media center. She finds fulfillment in “seeing the knowledge and enjoyment children get from reading” and feels rewarded with every child’s smile and thank you from a staff member at Ralph Williams. Mackenzie Yancey is another star
volunteer at Ralph Williams. She is only in 8th grade but uses her morning time to come in and work with EELP students. She is never seen without a smile on her face and is an incredible role model for other students, proving it is never too early to start sharing your time with others.

The dawn revealed over 1,300 entrants ready for battle at the first inaugural Excalibur Race in Viera presented by Running Zone. Participants prepared by watching a thrilling display of swordsmanship by knights of Medieval Times. Then the call for battle began and the race, covering 10 miles of “far away” lands, included volunteers dressed in period costumes shouting for the runners to “finish thy quest.” When a brave soul finished, they were rewarded with a crown and winners of each age group received an Excalibur Sword. A post-race feast was fueled by local companies: Viera Pizza, Pollo Tropical, Muscle Milk, Culligan Water and World of Beer.

Brevard Zoo: 20th Birthday Celebration & Meerkat Exhibit
Within Viera’s 25-year history there are several defining moments for our community. One of them was the volunteer build for the Brevard Zoo in 1994 when volunteers and staff helped build one of the best zoos in the United States. Our very own Brevard Zoo is celebrating its 20th birthday this year and the celebration will extend all year long. As part of the celebration, the zoo encouraged everyone to sign a Birthday Banner and, following great anticipation, the new Meerkat Hamlet opened. Adults lined the exhibit to get a closer look at the newest residents and children used a viewing cave made just for them. The exhibit’s presenting sponsor is PNC Bank. The birthday weekend also included a parade, special animal exhibits throughout the park and additional family fun moments.
Dr. Bingelli, Brevard School Superintendent and Keith Winsten, Executive Director of the Brevard Zoo enjoy the laughter of the children viewing the new Meerkat exhibit. 38 V IE RA VI S I O N

Pursuing New
ADVENTURES
We want to wish our former colleague, Judi John, continued success as she pursues new adventures in our community. For the past 17 years, Judi initiated and coordinated many of Viera’s community events. She continues to be a loyal supporter of the community and in particular, as a former teacher, Viera’s schools. You will continue to see Judi around town as a fellow resident and neighbor. When you see her, please thank her for the many contributions she made in Viera by bringing residents together to develop new friendships and create the strong sense of community we all value.

WHY I
C
ommunity pride is what motivates Noor Tawfik and her all female clean-up crew to dedicate one day a month to clean up litter along Murrell Road in Viera. Every fourth Monday, a team of five to 10 women put on their work shoes, slip into bright orange vests and gather handgloves, tools and trash bags. They meet at the corner of Murrell and Country Club Drive and begin their mission to help keep Viera beautiful.

founded the Viera Women’s Club in 1997 and served as its president for several years. Miller also serves as a Conservation Project team member. The Viera Women’s Club is a chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs International (GFWCI). Tawfik is from Egypt. She and her husband, Ismail, moved to the United States in 1969. They settled in New Jersey where she worked as a quality control manager for a pharmaceutical company. After retirement, the couple headed south and moved to Viera in 1997.
“We have a responsibility to help keep Brevard beautiful and we want to do our part in our own community,” said Tawfik, “The Viera community was pretty much who serves as the Conservation Project unknown at that time. In addition to her environmental concerns, Tawfik is an active school volunteer who gained a lot of recognition for her work at Golfview Elementary. Besides helping with the garden, Tawfik served as a tutor and a Rolling Reader volunteer. Last year, the school district gave her an honorable mention as a senior volunteer for the work she did at Golfview. Tawfik also serves as a mentor and a strong supporter of the Juniorette Viera Women’s Club, made up of middle and high school girls ages 12-18. This group recently held a fashion show to benefit single moms in the community. The show was attended by over 200 local residents and featured Women’s Club models of all ages.

NEW NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN
to Add Green Space,Visual Appeal
From the very beginning, the blueprint for Viera was based on the most up-to-date community design principles. As a result, Viera is characterized by its convenient access to shopping, schools and other daily necessities, abundant recreational trails, parks and open spaces, as well as a wide selection of housing types. Additionally, our goal has always been to find ways to minimize the costs of development while maintaining the quality and aesthetics of our beautiful community. Later this year we will begin development of a new concept in neighborhood designs -- one that remarkably improves and enhances the appeal of a neighborhood while reducing the surface area and costs for roads. The design is known as coving and was pioneered by Rick Harrison, an urban designer based in Minneapolis. One of the primary features of a neighborhood using the coving layout is more ample green space created by curved roads and the placement of the homes. Homes sit back further from the road and the shape of lots varies, having either wider front or back yards. As a result, rather than looking directly into their neighbor’s home, residents will see more of their own yard and landscape. The layout also provides green space for walking trails throughout the neighborhood, all leading to a community park.
48 V IE RA VI S I O N
Incredibly, the design allows the same number of homes as in a more traditional, linear layout, but, at the same time, reduces the number of roads and intersections. This makes the neighborhood safer and STEPHEN JOHNSON IS gives residents even more THE PRESIDENT OF THE VIERA COMPANY. opportunities to walk or jog through the community, further expanding Viera’s healthy community design. We at The Viera Company are excited about bringing this new neighborhood design to Viera as we continue to create a community that enriches the quality of lives for our residents. Watch for newer neighborhoods in Addison, the first of our four planned villages, to employ the coving design.
