VIERA welcome

TRACY DUDA CHAPMAN IS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE VIERA COMPANY AND GENERAL COUNSEL TO A. DUDA & SONS, INC.

As the master developer of Viera, one of The Viera Company’s guiding principles is to create a community that will enrich the quality of life for residents of Central Florida. This philosophy supports our parent company’s mission as a diversified land company to grow land values and vibrant communities. At the 25 year mark, we are blessed to be succeeding at both. Thanks to the efforts of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC), we are building our vibrant community within a county that is vibrant as well. In our cover article, “Moving Us Forward,” and our Business Spotlight, “21st Century Workforce” on page 26, you will learn how the EDC is working to bring quality businesses to the Space Coast, and how they plan to continue to pursue and capture economic development for our county as we move forward into the future. Another group that has helped our community thrive is our very own Viera Realty. In our Real Estate Spotlight on page 18 you will read about how Viera Realty has supported Viera’s growth

and continues to help us introduce new homebuyers to Viera. This feature will also introduce you to the team of realty experts that makes up Viera Realty — including a profile of each agent and how they approach serving their clients. This issue also includes other features that demonstrate how Viera is thriving. Be sure to check out “The ‘A’ Grade” on page 32 for an update on our school’s achievements, and read “Grandparenting Across the Miles” on page 29 to learn how Viera grandparents are using today’s technology to stay in touch with their loved ones. As we in Viera continue to move forward beyond this significant milestone year, I want to take this opportunity to thank the many other individuals and institutions that have made Viera the thriving community it is today.

“How have you spent your summer vacation?” We asked our Facebook fans and many photos were submitted. This photo was shot by Krystle Hubble of her daughter Hannah Rae Hubble (4 yrs old) surfing in Cocoa Beach in June. To stay connected, ‘like’ us on Facebook.com/VieraFlorida.

FORWARD EXPANDING INDUSTRIES ON THE SPACE COAST

What Embraer Air did was show the world that we can compete on an international and national basis outside of the space industry.

ecent industrial recruiting successes — namely major expansions by Northrop Grumman and Harris — means there soon will be more high-paying jobs to improve Brevard County’s quality of life, economic development officials have said. More taxes, and additional revenue for service industries and stores, bode well for all areas of the local economy, including improvements in health care, education and public infrastructure. And, in turn, improvements to the community help prospective industries encourage their employees to move to the Space Coast. 10 VIE R A V I S I O N

GETTING THE WORD OUT

Ironically, it was the 2011 retirement of the space shuttle program that “magnified exponentially our storytelling potential,’’ said Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast. National and global attention to the impact of the space shuttle story opened the door for the county to make its case for economic development efforts, Weatherman said. “What a community does with their problems is what sets it apart.” The first in a wave of recent successful industrial recruitments to the space

coast was in February 2011, when it was announced that Embraer Air would begin operations at Melbourne International Airport. The legacy of the work force along the Space Coast, in some cases three generations deep, helped attract Embraer Air, according to Weatherman. “What Embraer Air did was show the world that we can compete on an international and national basis outside of the space industry,” she said. Another important factor to draw industry to the county is financial incentive packages, she added.

VIERA coverstory

HISTORY OF SUCCESS

“Successful recruitments involving the airport are part of a longstanding history on the Space Coast,” according to Airport Authority Chairman Bill Potter. “Actually, the airport has been heavily involved with economic development since the 70’s. The first success was in 1973, when Brevard County was undergoing a traumatic economic downturn because of the end of the Apollo program. So we’ve had notable economic successes prior to this. The thing that makes it different now is that the competition is so much more intent. In those days it was ‘we have this land and a nice community in

which to live’ and that was enough to attract companies. Now it’s much more competitive and we’re putting together incentive packages,” Potter said. Harris Corporation Vice President Jim Burke said his company’s presence has grown steadily since 1950, with Harris establishing its headquarters in Melbourne in 1978. Today the company has more than 6,000 employees throughout the county. “Brevard’s early involvement in the U.S. space program and overall positive economic outlook played a significant role in Harris’ decision to locate and expand its presence here,’’ Burke said.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Expansion for Harris, including into the new building in Palm Bay, should be easy as the Space Coast gets more attractive to potential employees. “Brevard’s quality of life and economic climate are attractive to existing employees and applicants,’’ Burke said. The role businesses play in creating a positive environment for others is summed up by Rick Matthews, vice president of operations at Northrop Grumman’s Manned Aircraft Design Center of Excellence: “We are proud of the contributions we make to our community and business partners.” The Space Coast has a bright future V IE R A . co m 11

VIERA coverstory

with recent developments in business, real estate and Port Canaveral activity. Florida’s unique combination of existing, abundant aerospace businesses and a capable workforce, combined with a seasoned aerospace supply chain and low tax base, prompted the decision for Northrop Grumman to expand here. “Northrop Grumman has been in Melbourne for many years and looks forward to remaining a key community partner,” said Jacqueline Farrell, public relations representative for Northrop Grumman. “Northrop Grumman is connected to Brevard County. We support numerous organizations through

financial contributions and employee volunteerism,’’ she said. Selling the Space Coast may have been a long-term project, “but the stakes have become higher, the rewards greater, and the competition has become fiercer,” Potter said. That’s why the recent successes are so important. “I think they were tremendously significant and what makes them particularly significant is the intensity of the competition for those projects. There were communities all over the country that were doing everything they could to attract those projects. The notable thing was the number of

agencies, both state and local, who were involved in putting together the proposal that succeeded in attracting those companies,’’ Potter said. As for future economic development, Weatherman said the community may have turned the corner but must remain on task to realize long-term successes. “We’re starting to see it. It’s happening overnight here but we have to be sensitive to always continue to be vigilant. The only things that are being sited are new products and they require new processes of manufacturing. We’ve proven that we have the ability to do new processes of manufacturing with the sophisticated abilities we have

Harris Corporation’s Microelectronics and Large-Scale Production Complex designs, fabricates and integrates high-density circuits and packaged assemblies.

in our manufacturing base. We’ve been so successful with economic development, that one of my concerns is, and one of the issues the EDC will be working on over the next year, is the constant supply and availability of a workforce. We’ve been creating demand so much that we don’t want to decrease supply,” she said. Toward that end, Burke said that Harris has donated more than $10 million to help promote innovative technical research at schools across the state. The company also is a partner of the Brevard County Public Schools, providing $140,000 in annual funding to support initiatives focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). “That’s why you have economic development,‘’ Weatherman said. “We’re trying to guide it and create the kind of jobs we want.”

Selling Brevard County to prospective industries, especially following the 2011 retirement of the space shuttle program, takes a special kind of determination and tenacity. Staying that sometimes-difficult course, and ever looking toward the future, is president and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, Lynda Weatherman’s main objective. “It can be your doggedness, just fighting and fighting. I call it The Happy Warrior. You’re going to fight the good fight, you’re not always going to win, but you’re going to do your job. You believe in your community. You believe in your confidence. We’re professionals and we believe in what we are doing,” she said. Weatherman might have been among those beating the drum for new and expanding industries on the Space Coast, but she gives credit to many local and state officials for putting the successful bids together. “I’ve never seen so much economic development activity in my 30 plus years in the business and yet I’ve never seen so much demand for sophistication and competitive packages for clients. They know exactly how important bringing their capital investment to our area is. It has to be the right choice for both,” she said. And, even when successes occur, there’s always more to do for the future. “We just try to make sure we continue telling the story because we have so many more opportunities for North, Central Brevard and South Brevard too.”

LPL FINANCIAL & MERRILL LYNCH According to a 2011 report released by Oxford Economics, economic activity focused around serving the needs of people age 50 and older is $7.1 trillion today and expected to grow to $13.5 trillion by 2032. Based on that statistic, baby boomers are still driving the economy. Boomers are also reaching a time in their life when sound financial planning matters most. Yet for many, financial decisions can be overwhelming. Rob Dale runs the local LPL Financial office in Viera. His complex offers a full range of legal and financial services. Dale came to Viera in 2002, after working for American Express in Suntree. “I wanted to put down roots in the community,” said Dale. “I wanted people to realize I am here to stay and can offer a multitude of services—that’s why I found a location where I could offer multiple offices and partners who could provide a spectrum of services.” For example, Paul Dailey is a family law attorney who offers simple estate planning, contracts, bankruptcy and other legal services to local residents and businesses. Both Dale and Dailey are military veterans with close ties to Patrick Air Force base and the veteran community. Dailey specializes in legal matters while Dale sees himself as a counselor and a financial therapist. “The fluctuating economy makes it hard for those planning for retirement— it’s not so much about making the right investments as it is about assuring stability,” Dale said. “The biggest question many are asking is, ‘Am I going to be able to retire and sustain a decent standard of living over my expected lifetime?’ It’s easy to tell them to buy an investment, but I consider myself far more than a stockbroker — I am a counselor, an advisor and a therapist.” Dale describes a scenario that is all too common, even in the most affluent communities: “Without proper financial planning, many enter retirement at age 62 and then find themselves broke by age 65. They are then forced to tap out their entire 401K.

happiness is an

EXCEPTIONAL smile Rob Dale, LPL Financial & Paul Dailey, Attorney

They have limited social security income, and are forced to get a part-time job.” Dale prefers to be proactive. “I can help individuals buy investments but the real discussion should be what they need to do to get to and sustain their retirement. Once we get through the planning, then we can discuss how to grow their portfolio and look at what products and assets they can add.” Last year, Merrill Lynch conducted a study to determine current investment trends. In their 2013 Changing Values Retirement Study, researchers found that 88 percent would like to save enough money to have stability and peace of mind, while only 12 percent were concerned about investing as a means of accumulating as much wealth as possible. In 2013, Merrill Lynch introduced “A Transforming World,” drawing on the insights of top economists, researchers and strategists from Bank of America and Merrill Lynch offices across the U.S. “In a world where change is both constant and expected, there are basic, everlasting themes that will remain essential,” said Ashvin Chhabra, a chief investment officer with Merrill Lynch. For example, today’s investment trends often fall under the themes of healthcare, technology and environmental products. Those who see opportunity in U.S. production of crude oil and natural gas can access this theme, for example, through master limited partnerships that build and operate pipelines and other elements of the transportation infrastructure. They can also look at companies that make equipment and provide services for energy exploration, extraction and production. Meanwhile, cloud computing and big data are creating open technology environments, while an anticipated greater need for cybersecurity has Merrill Lynch forecasters predicting this type of global spending could reach $86 billion by 2016.

VIERA REALTY

Continuing to Showcase a Sense of Community and Belonging

W

hen the new town of Viera was announced 25 years ago it did not have a real estate sales division. In 1990, Viera Realty, Inc. was born and has focused on finding the best quality homes for its customers. During those early days, the development plans for residential and commercial areas included future elements such as a large upscale shopping area, medical facilities, and areas for recreation, a golf course, and residential connectivity. The agents at Viera Realty were the primary point of contact for prospective customers and the Viera Realty agents had to reassure these buyers/sellers that these early expectations would be met. Without 18 VIE RA V I S I O N

the benefit of completed buildings and homes, it was a challenging undertaking and required faith from the agents and the customers that the vision of the new town of Viera would be realized as a comprehensive, balanced community with thoughtful architectural guidelines. The agents succeeded and their knowledge and expertise on the community has proven to be exactly why residents and customers continue to use their services.

COMMUNITY BEGINNINGS

In 1994, Viera Realty was located on the corner of Murrell Road at Wickham Road. Illustrations allowed prospective

buyers to visualize the future plans for the community. By May of that year, the town had grown to a population of over 900 families and included 29 businesses employing over 2,500 people. The agents in those days had to use sketch drawings on future road projects, a large topographical map identifying the first phase of the planned 6,000 single and multi-family housing units, and show clients home sites using hard hats and mud friendly shoes. Many major elements were already in place such as the Brevard Zoo, Viera East Golf Club and over six miles of trails. Viera Realty sponsored the first community-led block party so neighbors could gather at the local park. These

early events formed neighborhood friendships and gave families an opportunity to share their stories, learn more about their community and begin new lasting connections. Barbeque was served as the young families watched their children run and play and residents talked about forming new golf teams for the upcoming tournaments.

EXPANSIONS AND NEW DIRECTIONS

When the community expanded to central Viera, Viera Realty moved to an information center with innovative technology at the current Viera Discovery Center. It was called the Home Discovery Center in 2006 and the move was well received. The center offered an interactive experience for the buyers with highdefinition TV, high-speed Internet and digital phone service from Bright House Networks. Designer Jenise Osani created an atmosphere with “restaurant style seating rather than a cold intimidating office” and “where traditional values and new technology meet.” This concept proved to be successful for several years. But as the economy changed, so did the way buyers wanted to conduct business. The current office, located off of Murrell Road, still offers the same immersive experience, but today’s buyers and sellers want an intimate setting with smaller conference rooms with Internet access to discuss all facets of the transaction. The home buying experience also includes modern technology that is mobile and high-speed. The use of mobile applications, tablets and laptops means that today’s agent has to remain accessible and mobile. The agents of Viera Realty have the tools to work in this new digital environment.

THE TEAM

We sat down and asked the agents what they felt was the “why” in what they do; why they sell real estate, why they like it, and why they are unique. They each have a specific area of expertise and each agent is very proud to share their passion for the work.

John Staubly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He also spent nine years as IT director for a company with four different locations. This experience has given John the need to gather as much information about his clients as he can in order to help them find their perfect home. He has also recently become a senior resident specialist and uses his knowledge to help clients “relax and get them to open up” about what they are really looking for in a home. Linda Brayer has been with Viera Realty for 15 years and smiles when asked about why she likes her job. She is “committed in service and enjoys helping people find a home” and loves seeing her clients’ “a-ha moment” when they find the perfect house. Linda believes in the plans for Viera’s future development and vision for the community. Tom O’Day moved to Florida in 1989 and has worked with custom home builders in the area before becoming a real estate agent. This experience gave him the tools and the skills to help counsel his buyers when purchasing new construction. Tom studied marketing at Manhattan College and uses these skills to help clients in the selling process as well. Kristie Penn takes a scientific approach to her new home and investment client base. She uses tools available for pricing comparisons and finds a balance between price and value. “I’m a formula driven agent that identifies hot spots for investments and I enjoy the excitement that

Debi Kalina has a warmth to her smile that is contagious. She has been involved in real estate for over 18 years but started her career as an engineer at WFTVChannel 9 in Orlando. Debi believes that the counseling element to the relationship cannot be overlooked when choosing the right agent. She spends days touring her clients around Viera and helping them set priorities on their decisions when looking for a perfect home. Kathy Ferdinando focuses on the “over 55” active adult communities and enjoys the time spent learning about her clients and how they see their futures. Her philosophy includes the “5 P’s” which means “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance” and she dedicates her time, experience and ideas to “take it to the next level.” Before working in real estate for 14 years, Kathy worked in the auto industry in sales and finance and believes to “achieve success there can be no shortcuts.” Deb Tomczak utilizes every available tool to customize what you may want out of a real estate transaction. Her background in advertising and product management gave Deb the skills to negotiate deals and represent buyers and sellers on many multi-million dollar contracts. She continues to gain knowledge and connections while working in the community and is very active on several community board positions. She believes a combination of “professionalism, integrity and passion” are extremely important to being successful. V IE R A . co m 19

Joan Gimmartino is an incredible listener and uses these traits to connect with people. Her strong negotiation skills help her identify exactly what the customer is looking for in a transaction. “Viera Realty has always had an excellent reputation and I wanted to be a part of such a great group of agents.” Joan is a golfer and enjoys the many challenges it presents. Lori Nartatez was a practicing nurse before changing careers and working in real estate. Her background makes it easy to relate to a customer’s needs by being patient yet aggressive when the moment calls for it. Lori believes a house is just a house unless you fit the home. These are the details that

are overlooked in transactions where the buyer may settle for something that does not fit. “It is a proactive approach in all areas of the process.” Mary Ann Thompson has an extensive technology background and has a degree to prove it. She assists her clients by giving them the resources to make the best home buying decisions they can make. Her edge is the understanding of online tools and the ability to use them. “Unless you understand and utilize the benefit they offer, you will never gain the strong advantage you are looking for.”

In recognition of Viera's anniversary, we will continue to feature significant events from Viera's 25 year history.

The interaction between the agent and the client involves trust and for Mary this trust is extremely important. “You do what you have to do to help people where you can.” She uses her knowledge and experience to give first time buyers options that they did not know were available. “Many clients just did not know about the opportunities out there to help them move into their first home.”

Jennifer LeBlanc has learned the art of strategic problem solving. She has the skills to match the buyer’s affordability with their dream home and earns their trust with her experience in the title and closing process. Jennifer wants clients to know their rights and obligations. She studies the current laws and economic trends so she can “inform completely.”

Gail Benton has worked with Viera Realty for 20 years and you will find her smiling face on the weekends helping agents and clients with appointments and information.

PROFESSIONALISM AND DEDICATION

Key to Viera Realty’s success are Nancy Bearden and Gail Benton who have been instrumental in creating the agency’s friendly and professional environment. Nancy Bearden has worked with Viera Realty for 14 years and, as the operations coordinator, works each week assisting the busy agents. “I like meeting and helping people so this position allows me to make new friendships and help where I can,” said Nancy.

We asked several agents about the value these two ladies bring to Viera Realty and the response was instantaneous. They mentioned their

“dedication and hard work,” their work being “immeasurable” and in some cases the “lifeline of the agent’s business.” The ladies know the history of Viera and have been eyewitnesses to its growth. When you visit Viera Realty, you will discover a friendly face with knowledge and expertise that both Nancy and Gail are happy to share. The Viera Realty team works cohesively together to make your experience one that will become a lasting friendship. Scott Miller, president and broker of Viera Realty, believes his team has the skills and the expertise to foster this type of continued relationship with all of their clients. “We are never satisfied with status quo in Viera. We are always looking to raise the bar with customer service. Whether people are looking for existing homes or new construction, our goal is that each customer finds our services beneficial and that they enjoy the unique experience they will have with Viera Realty. We truly believe that no one knows Viera like Viera Realty and we live it every day.”

SummerSafety

Viera is known for its active lifestyle — and with that reputation comes the additional responsibility to be proactive, especially when it comes to safety.

POOL SAFETY

Pool safety is especially important when you consider the large percentage of Viera homes that have their own swimming pools. Susie Parente, a 25-year American Red Cross water safety instructor and owner of Safety Susie Swim School, is on a mission to reduce the number of water accidents and deaths. She recently formed the Space Coast Drowning Prevention Task Force to partner with local agencies and businesses to help spread the word about water safety. “The mission is simple — drowning is preventable,” Parente said. “The Space Coast has a lot of water. People are so busy. They think, ‘it will never happen to me’ or ‘my kid took swim lessons.’ Even if you think they can survive, don’t turn your back. It doesn’t always matter if they can swim. Always watch your children,” Parente added. 22 VIE RA V I S I O N

The task force was formed to get the information and resources out to everyone on the Space Coast through partnerships. “Together we can save lives and prevent drowning … we have a ways to go, but we’ve had a few successful events and our next will be August 9 — a community yard sale fundraiser at UNOs from 8:00 a.m. until noon,” Parente said. Meanwhile, Brevard County pools offer swimming lessons to babies as young as six months, with toddlers and preschoolers advancing to acquire basic swimming skills. In most cases, pool safety is an important component of the classes.

TIPS

• Never leave your child unattended around water. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water. • Put the cell phone away, forget about all the other things you have to do and give young children 100 percent of your attention when they are near or around water.

Hits Home for Viera

• Empty all tubs, buckets, containers and wading pools immediately after use. Store them upside down and out of children’s reach. • If your child is missing — always check the nearby waterways first. • Learning CPR should be on the top of the list. It will give you tremendous peace of mind — and the more peace of mind you have as a parent, the better.

BIKE SAFETY

During summer months when more children are home from school and riding without adult supervision, bike safety also becomes a great concern. Research shows, children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking more than any other sport. “Anytime motorists see children playing they should slow down and pay special attention,” said Kim Smith who oversees bicycle and pedestrian safety education for Brevard County’s Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization.

In her role as a safety advocate, Smith designs custom bike safety programs for children and adults. For example, Smith recently presented a comprehensive safety program for third to sixth grade summer campers. Every elementary school in Viera also offers a four-week, on campus bike safety program. One of the most important safety concerns is wearing a helmet. This applies to cyclists young and old. Helmets can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by 88 percent, yet only 45 percent of children 14 and under usually wear a bike helmet. “Florida law requires that anyone under 16 must wear a helmet and it must be properly fitted,” said Smith. Another important factor is learning to share the same travel space. “Motor cars can be aggressive,” Smith admitted. “Careful planning has made Viera the ideal community for pedestrians, cyclists and motor car drivers. All parties must watch out for themselves and for each other. Viera is what we call a ‘walkable and bike-able’ community. What that means is there are plenty of sidewalks and good paved shoulders.” Even though the community is well designed, the abundance of golf carts can be a problem, Smith said. They too must watch for others sharing the same travel space. “Everyone must pay attention to road signs and should learn the rules regarding who has the right-ofway. Pedestrians and bicycle riders actually have the right-of-way over golf carts,” Smith said. At night, cyclists should wear bright clothing and need proper lighting. Florida law requires white headlights and a red tail lamp that can be seen from a distance, Smith added. When riding at dusk, dawn or in the evening, bikers should use lights — and make sure bike reflectors are in good working condition.

Manager's MINUTE FROM MANAGER, CLAY ARCHEY

After attending recent Viera homeowner’s association meetings, I noticed a particular concern that seemed to emerge from residents at more than one meeting. Most of us love the convenience that golf carts afford — the relative ease they provide of quick and efficient transportation — however, I wanted to take this opportunity to relay a couple of the concerns that were mentioned about golf carts in our community and a few possible remedies. Under Florida State Law, a child needs to be at least 14-years of age to operate a golf cart. One of the concerns echoed at more than a few meetings was that golf carts are routinely seen barreling down a side walk or behind community gates with six or more kids on board, not appearing to have safety on their minds. While minoraged drivers bore the brunt of these concerns, it was also mentioned that, at times, an adult drove these overloaded carts. As responsible adults we must ask ourselves, “Is this something we should be allowing to happen or, even worse, teaching our kids the potential dangers this activity might cause?” Additionally, golf carts are supposed to travel no more than 20 miles per hour. If you aren’t sure how fast you are going, there are speedometer apps available via your smart phone that will help you stay at safe speeds. Another major issue was a lack of common courtesy. We all were taught pedestrians have the right of way, but many noted that this golden rule isn’t being followed. While driving a cart, if you are coming around a corner, approaching a walker, runner or someone on a bicycle, remember to slow down and yield them the path. Most of all, take the opportunity to teach your beginning driver these safe practices by talking with them or, better yet, setting the example when you are driving. Lastly, respect your neighbor’s private property and the common areas of your community; trespassing while driving a golf cart is no different than when you are on foot or bicycle. Thank you for helping us all keep the streets, sidewalks, paths and people in our community safe.

VIERA HEALTH CARE:

A Continuum of Care for a Growing Community

V

iera is one of the fastest growing communities in the state of Florida. With that growth, the need for hospitals, specialized medical services and a continuum of medical care is critical to the infrastructure and the health and well being of residents. In 2011, Health First opened its Viera Hospital on a first-of-its-kind integrated health care campus called Viera Health Park. Their vision was to offer Viera’s rapidly growing community a variety of centrally located health care services emphasizing health, wellness and disease prevention, as well as a full range of traditional inpatient and outpatient services. Located west of Interstate 95 on the southwest corner of Wickham Road and Lake Andrew Drive, Health First Viera Hospital is the cornerstone of the 50-acre Viera Health Park campus, which also offers a Medical Plaza and the Pro-Health and Fitness Center. “Within these state-of-the-art facilities, our providers, associates and volunteers work hard every day to provide exceptional compassionate care. Health First appreciates the overwhelming support we have received from Viera residents and we are excited to continue to partner and grow with this vibrant community,” said Stuart Mitchell, Health First executive vice president and chief operations officer.

The second largest health care facility in Viera is the VA Outpatient Clinic, which is conveniently located to serve all of Brevard County and nearby Patrick Air Force Base. The VA Clinic includes three primary care teams, comprised of physicians, nurses, administrative support personnel, mid-level practitioners, a social worker, dietician and pharmacists. More than 220 active volunteers provide a wide variety of services to make the facility fully supportive of its patients. Using high-tech medical equipment, the VA Clinic offers a wide variety of services including diagnostic cardio, pulmonary and radiology services, mental health services, prosthetics, neurology, nutrition, pain management, physical

therapy, a wound clinic and specialized women’s health care. Additionally, the facility has pioneered a program that allows eligible veterans in East Central Florida to receive inpatient medical care through a contract with other community hospitals in the area.

HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AGES

Viera also offers a wide range of health care services through Health First Medical Group — Brevard’s largest multi-specialty physician group with offices at 7125 Murrell Rd. in Viera. Physician practices within the group include: Obstetrics, Geriatrics, Urology, General Surgery and Interventional Neuroradiology, plus many other specialties. To find a physician for your specific need, visit HealthFirstMedicalGroup.org. Viera’s Health First Medical Rehabilitation provides therapy to Florida’s Space Coast hospitalized patients and outpatients. Working hand-in-hand with primary care physicians, specialists, pediatricians and occupational medicine physicians, they provide medical rehabilitation and physical

therapy to patients with sports injuries, lymphedema, cardiovascular impairments and a variety of other injuries or post-surgical conditions requiring therapy, conditioning and exercise. Nemours Children’s Clinic offers specialty pediatric care to children and teens throughout Brevard County. This satellite children’s clinic, located on the first floor of the Spyglass Medical Center, provides follow-up and ongoing care with some of the same physicians your child sees at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. One of the highlights of the Specialty Care program includes a “Weight Management Consultation” program for kids ages three to 16. For more information, visit Nemours.org/locations/florida/ viera.html. Multiple levels of assistance are available to Viera’s aging population, all within a few miles, including: independent living, enhanced caregiving, assisted living and Alzheimer’s care. Located at 8085 Spyglass Hill Rd., One Senior Place offers a wealth of information on healthcare and other topics or services for seniors.

BUILDING A HEALTHIER & STRONGER COMMUNITY Last month, Aaron Robinson was named the new vice president for wellness and outpatient services at Health First. Robinson has 17 years of experience in health care and began his career as a physical therapist. He will oversee the many specialized services of Health First’s Outpatient and Wellness Division, including Health First Diagnostic Services, Health First Medical Rehabilitation, Health First Private Duty, Health First Pro-Health and Fitness Centers, Health First Pain Management and the Health First Family Pharmacy. “Aaron brings extensive experience and knowledge of health care services to our organization. Health and wellness initiatives are at the core of our work as an integrated delivery network and Aaron will help us grow these programs and build a healthier and stronger community,” said Drew Rector, executive vice president and chief strategy officer of Health First.

very Monday at 4 o’clock you can find Carolyn Hecker, affectionately known as “CC” by her granddaughter, sitting at her computer using Skype to see her 5-year-old granddaughter, Gabby. This set appointment is the highlight of her week and gives her a chance to catch up with her precious little one. Gabby has a snack and shares some quality time with CC. Carolyn’s granddaughter lives in New Jersey and she says that she will “take whatever face time she can get” with her family. The ability to see her family via the computer was one of the reasons why she agreed to leave New Jersey with her husband and head to Florida after his retirement. Not being there for a special moment like kindergarten graduation or the holiday season is hard on Carolyn, but technology has become an incredible gift that bridges the gap. While Carolyn has the opportunity to see Gabby about four times a year, video chats ensure she does not miss seeing her grow up. She also receives videos and photos of Gabby via e-mail from her son-in-law’s parents. Not only has her computer brought Carolyn closer to her granddaughter, it has also forged a relationship with Gabby’s other grandparents that wouldn’t otherwise have come about. “Today’s seniors are definitely on the technology bandwagon and it is providing them with options they didn’t have just a few years ago.” Joan Vanasse had her first experience with texting during the birth of her first grandbaby. While she and her husband waited expectantly in the hospital they were being updated to the minute on the delivery of Lillianna. While her second granddaughter, Madelyn, was being born, Joan kept Lillianna and they received a video of the new baby just five minutes after her birth. Starting with Lillianna, Joan used the phrase “is this Nonni’s princess” every time she video chatted with her to ensure that she would be remembered and it worked! That

tradition has continued with Madelyn. The two girls, ages 2 ½ and 1 ½, video chat with Joan every other week and they see one another in person every four to six weeks. Joan loves using the computer to see her grandchildren. She regularly connects with family through Facebook too, uploading pictures and sharing news. She says, “I can see them develop and if the girls do something new I get a video.” Now that Madelyn has begun walking and talking, Joan gets to share in the fun all while being miles away. Nonni and her princesses

have embraced technology and it has made all the difference. Technology has revolutionized relationships by allowing people to stay in touch like never before. No more missed dance recitals or school plays. Videos are just a click away. Gone are the days of waiting to see a grandchild. All one has to do now is simply set up a video chat via text to see a family member virtually in an instant. Staying in touch is easier than ever before and grandparents in Viera are taking full advantage of all the resources available to them. V IE R A . co m 31

Harmony Farms Annual Buck-A-Roo Ball

ARTIST: Lori Jenkins

The programs at Harmony Farms have grown over the years and have made an incredible impact on the lives of children with disabilities, their families, veterans and the volunteers who serve them. One of the most anticipated events was held on June 28 with boots, cowboy hats and other western gear. The annual Buck-A-Roo Ball was enjoyed by local families, businesses and horse-lovers of all ages. Local artists came out for the ball and the “Paint-Around” was a huge success. Each artist began to paint on one of four canvases and then moved onto the next canvas after 15 minutes. The theme for the prints was “Don’t Fence Me In” and the final paintings were auctioned off at the end of the evening. Robert “R.L.” Lewis, one of the original Highwaymen artists, also showcased his art with his painting Big Red Barn. Harmony Farms hopes to extend the donations beyond this special evening and keep the funds coming in for the ‘Big Red Barn’ relocation project. To learn more, visit HarmonyFarmsInc.org.

Summer Fun

We asked local residents via a social media contest to share their summer photos with us. The two questions asked were, “What did you do for the 4th of July?” and “Share with us what you did this summer.” Here’s a few examples of how much fun we have on the Space Coast and the ways we enjoy our summer in Viera. 20th Annual Great American Celebration

The much anticipated 20th annual Great American Celebration was met with driving rain that caused the concert, game and fireworks to be canceled. But the tremendous efforts made by local volunteers and staff to have the event ready rain or shine was acknowledged by Lauri Duda that evening, “The dedication, professionalism and countless hours of effort are all part of what makes Viera unique and the community strong.” Joane Dowd, event architect, also shared her thoughts with the group, “We are blessed to be able to produce these events that create a synergy that reaches thousands of lives. The tremendous support of our sponsors, the local businesses and our community partners all came together and we could not do this without each and every one of you!”

LIVING IN VIERA

Maxine Seeley with James Brassard and Howard Alkaline

L

“Once I got here I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I just love it,” she said.

Located on VA property, directly behind the Space Coast Stadium and in the heart of the community, Viera Manor is an eldercare facility that looks and feels like home. Maxine said she loves the centralized location.

The Seeleys raised a family of four children and now have six grandchildren, two in Texas, one in Georgia and two in Florida.

ong time beachside resident, Maxine Seeley, is new to Viera but says she has already fallen in love. On December 28, 2013, she and her late husband, Clarence, moved to Viera Manor, where she can’t quite decide if she loves the dining hall, the ice cream parlor or the library the most.

“Everything is right here … I don’t have to go to Orlando for my shopping,” she said. “I spend a lot of time at The Avenue.” Maxine also loves to dine at nearby restaurants — especially Longhorn Steakhouse. The Seeleys met 60-years ago in Brookeville, PA. They’ve also lived in Chicago, IL; Santa Barbara, CA; Lancaster, OH and Millidgeville, GA before retiring to the Space Coast. “My husband worked for a company called Cypress Minerals and his work had him coming back and forth from Georgia to Florida,” Maxine said. “He came to Brevard County to visit a man named Bob Fortier who made ceramic statues, and he was always saying that we should move to Florida. I fought it at first because I thought it would be too hot.” Maxine eventually gave in and the couple moved to Brevard County.

46 VIE RA V I S I O N

After moving to Brevard, Maxine worked as a secretary for Northrop Grumman for about six years.

Last year, Clarence’s health began to decline rapidly. In a short amount of time he was in and out of three hospitals. “My daughter helped me look around for the perfect place where we both could stay together. We also wanted a place where the staff would be experienced, helpful and caring — a place where the atmosphere would be pleasant, that looked and felt like home,” Maxine said. Clarence passed away in April. Maxine admits she has not yet had the chance to enjoy all that Viera has to offer. “I spent my first few months running back and forth to doctors, but now I can relax and sit outside and take in the beauty,” she said. Maxine is looking forward to getting more involved with some of the activities Viera Manor offers, such as the themed monthly parties and field trips.

VIERA finalnote I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the major businesses that have chosen to locate or expand in Brevard County, notably Embraer, Harris Corporation and Northrop Grumman, as referred to in our cover article, “Moving Us Forward.” On behalf of The Viera Company, I also want to extend a warm Viera welcome to their employees and their families. Regardless of where they choose to make their home — and we hope they choose Viera! — these individuals will become part of the fabric of our extended community here on the Space Coast. They will send their children to our schools, shop at local retailers and dine at local restaurants. They will enjoy all of the abundant recreational amenities in and around Brevard County and I expect they will also contribute greatly to our civic and service organizations. They will play starring roles in moving our area forward.

Townhomes at Stadium Villas by Viera Builders, now available 48 VIE RA V I S I O N

The same is true in Viera, where over the past 25 years the residents, businesses, schools, and churches have all contributed to what we know as our community. From the earliest “pioneers” — the very first residents and businesses to call Viera home — to the most recent newcomers — each have played a role in creating Viera’s unique character as a town and building Viera’s reputation as one of the area’s most desirable places in which to live. As Viera moves forward, The Viera Company will continue to do its part to provide a strong foundation for its future. From innovative new home and neighborhood designs to commercial STEPHEN JOHNSON IS businesses that offer new merchandise THE PRESIDENT OF THE VIERA COMPANY. and services, from additional health and recreation-centered enterprises to planned transportation corridors — all of these plus other components of our master planned community will work together to help Viera move forward in a way that is steady, based on an enduring vision to create a vibrant community. We invite our Brevard County newcomers to join us as we continue to move forward.
