Developing and growing our social infrastructure
R
eflection is always something we do as a nation at the end of the calendar year. It even has a pattern to it. We verbalize our thanks at family gatherings at Thanksgiving, we show our appreciation of others with gifts during the holiday season, and finally, make a vow to keep a promise to ourselves on a personal level (after reflecting on what may need to change) at the start of the new year. I enjoy listening to podcasts and reading books that offer some insight into these considerations and thoughts on a broad level. It is with this in mind that I stumbled upon two words - social infrastructure. The term is used to describe the construction and maintenance of facilities or assets that support the social needs of a community, city, region, and nation. The term includes everything from schools to roads and hospitals to performing arts centers. It is where people go to interact or even how they get there. Social media, as we know it, has taken the term as its own but the physical form was established long before platforms to “like” or “friend” someone or something existed. Over the last year, Viera has grown and continues to develop a strong inclusive community bringing different businesses and people together. I’m proud to say that I have been part of a
team that works diligently to push forward and deliver on our social infrastructure. The charity and holiday events we will all attend this season were planned and designed with aspects of this concept too. The local businesses who sponsor the Light Up Viera holiday parade allow our team to provide the public with a better experience each year. The community will always have a hand in the success of any social infrastructure asset and its ability to thrive and grow. We see this from the growth of Making Strides Brevard and the Harvest Festival. They are great ways to support a cause and enjoy gathering as a community. You can see in the photo above this letter how we sincerely get the team involved beyond our usual day-to-day work. We take the concept to heart and hope that we deliver on the best experience possible but we never do it alone. There is always room for another idea, a creative concept or refinements to the plan. We hope you enjoy this final issue of the year and we will continue to develop and grow our social infrastructure to achieve the best quality of life in Viera in the years to come. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

THE VIERA WORKSHOP MAGIC PL ANNING & SANTA’S HELPERS SANTA’S ELVES ARE BUSY.
THEY START EARLY, PLANNING THEIR HOLIDAY WORK NEARLY A YEAR IN ADVANCE, GETTING DOWN TO IT WHILE SUMMER’S HEAT STILL RAGES. BY AUGUST, FLOATS HAVE BEEN ORDERED, PLANS ARE BEING SUBMITTED, AND DESIGNING ONE OF THE LARGEST LOCAL HOLIDAY PARADES IS WELL UNDERWAY. THE PROJECT NOW ALSO INCLUDES THE WINDOW DISPLAYS AT THE VIERA DISCOVERY CENTER. COLORFUL COSTUMES ARE HUNG BY ONE WALL WITH CARE, AND ON THE OPPOSITE IS SET A PLAN FOR WHAT AMOUNTS TO A MOVING WORKSHOP. A WHIMSICALLOOKING CHARACTER PAINTED RED AND GREEN, PERHAPS FOUR FEET HIGH WITH A CUT-OUT FACE, INVITES OTHERS TO BECOME HOLIDAY ELVES THEMSELVES.
4
WELCOME TO THE WORKSHOP
It’s a team effort and each individual works in various aspects of the production and display. “Welcome to the Viera workshop,” said Stephanie Byrd, marketing manager at The Viera Company and editor of the Viera Vision Magazine. “We have incorporated not only the creative magic involved in making things from scratch but also made every attempt to keep recycling in mind and use everyday items.” Laurie Widzgowski has taken over the duties of event and marketing coordinator, working diligently on all the details both large and small for this year’s Light Up Viera holiday parade. “We are in year six of the parade and our goal is to ‘wow’ the spectators with lights and fanfare, while presenting new elements each year.” Carmen Vastola, supervisor of the Viera Discovery Center, is excited to share the designs for the new holiday windows they will showcase at The Avenue Viera location. “The theme is Santa’s Workshop and the display will provide a magical look into this aspect of the holiday.” “My team and I get really excited for this time of year,” said Lauri Duda, vice president of marketing at The Viera Company. “We approach the concepts and designs from a child’s point of view. The focus is always the magic of the season and the childlike wonderment of it.” A new member of the team this year is Mikki Livanos, graphic design and social media specialist, and she will be designing several items you will see in this publication as well as at the event along with the agency Brandt Ronat.
MUSIC, FOOD, PERFORMANCES AND PHOTO-OPS
This year’s parade will include adults and children dressed as elves, as well as several new costumes and elements including pre-parade entertainment, food and photo-ops. “The Brevard Hawaiian Dancers, Viera Arts Studio and the Viera Women’s Club each have great performances you do not want to miss,” said Widzgowski. “Food trucks will have specialty dishes from a huckleberry chicken topped with blackberry Dijon and fried onions from Up In Smoke, an authentic Cuban sandwich from El Cubanito, a secret recipe Spice Sweet Tea, vegetarian dishes like tacos Mazatlán, and a dessert truck with churros stuffed with a variety of sweet fillings. Photo opportunities by the largerthan-life Wells Fargo Concord Stagecoach Appearance bring a unique element this year too.” The parade also will be more musical in nature this year, with five high school bands, from Astronaut, Merritt Island, Rockledge and Satellite, as well as Viera, with a new element: band sponsorship by The Avenue Viera, Brandt Ronat, All Service Graphics, Stanley Homes and Brand They are Santa’s helpers and this is Viera, where the holidays are celebrated each year with civic pride, feted by the Viera Community Institute. It begins in brilliant earnest at 6 p.m. Nov. 24, the Saturday after Thanksgiving as always, the Light Up Viera holiday parade with its floats, its marching bands, its kids, its walking (and driving) units, its costumes, its thousands of lights. This year, elves will be the focus in living and depicted ways, including a unique float devised by Duda and codesigned and built with antiques dealers John and Sylvia Kirchel of Vintage Venues in Rockledge. It will bear the workshop of Santa Claus, complete with a tabletop conveyor belt at which the red-and-green-clad elves are working diligently on the toys he will deliver a month after the 2.7-mile parade. “The workshop building will open to display the elves working and we hope everyone takes a moment to see all the detail and creative elements we are building into the design,” Duda says with spritely cheer. Beginning the first week of November, the elves also will have a bench in the Viera Discovery Center, which will be illuminated with lights, its décor hand-made with recycled and non-recycled materials. Lauri’s husband Paul has also volunteered his time to build the frames for the window elves and various structure pieces on the Santa’s Workshop parade float. That is not surprising in this family-oriented celebration, put together by people who view the community as one big family. Christmas is important here and its primary elf looks up from the papier-mâché hand she has created for one of its decorations, her paintbrush full of tacky Gesso primer, when the word “family” is mentioned. “This is genuine; it comes from the heart,” says Duda. “It is our opportunity to give something to the community, which means so much to us.”
5
to be as prepared as one can possibly be. That is why the parade and its units, which step off and end at Viera High School, are carefully scrutinized and monitored, always. “We meet with the sheriff's office to appropriately staff the event in order to continue to provide the community with a safe event,” Duda says. It all has to do with its founders’ vision of Viera and Viera’s vision of itself, so much a throwback in so many ways, where neighbors know one another, kids are welcome, homes and relations are matters of pride and the holidays sparkle with what Duda calls the “wonder and awe of childhood.” In the words of Sylvia Kirchel, “I participated on a float last year and loved it. I felt like a little kid again smiling and waving at everyone.”
BREVARD HAWAIIAN DANCERS WILL PERFORM IN THE ENTERTAINMENT AREA PRE-PARADE.
Transfer & Storage. “The marching bands do an amazing job each year and we are excited to offer this level of sponsorship,” said Byrd. For the first time, an entertainment area will include a “Letter to Santa” station, where children can write their letters to Santa and place them in mailboxes at that location. “Our elf will be sure these letters get to Santa after the parade,” said Widzgowski. After the pre-parade entertainment is enjoyed, the churros are eaten and the cocoa is consumed, the parade will be heralded, as always, with seven minutes of fireworks fired from the vicinity of the cleared land across from USSSA Space Coast Complex, and the magic will commence. The group wants everyone to pay close attention to the new costumes representing the Viera Wetlands with colorful butterflies flying by and the over 40 elements within the parade line-up. That some of the new costumes and décor already are finished and in place is the result of planning and forethought. Duda, a self-described “Christmas fanatic,” calls it “one of those things we do all year,” starting with after-action reports after the holidays, each January.
PLANNING AND SAFETY
The meetings, at which critiques are offered and plans presented, have serious aspects too, and they include the safety of those who participate in and watch Light Up Viera. A growing event requires planning and understanding of what is needed in that regard. Duda says she has noticed that as the event grows more complex, it’s always important
NERVE TO SERVE GROUP WILL BE VOLUNTEERING DURING THE PARADE.
VIERA ARTS STUDIO WILL PERFORM IN THE ENTERTAINMENT AREA PRE-PARADE.
“The crowd brings an energy that is contagious and we aspire to keep providing the unique experience that is Light Up Viera,” said Byrd. “Holidays are important here,” Duda says, looking up from her work again. “We want people to feel the holidays. We began with the Great American Celebration (Fourth of July) and now it’s Christmas; we want Viera to be where you come for Christmas. The holidays can be magical and this is our gift to the community. Christmas is about giving, and for us, Light Up Viera is the giving part. We just love it.”

EVERYTHING T’S NO MYSTERY TO ANYONE WHO’S EVER HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS WHY THE MOVEMENT FOUNDED BY EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER 50 YEARS AGO THIS YEAR
HAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MORE THAN FIVE MILLION PARTICIPANTS IN 172 COUNTRIES AND MORE THAN 100,000 EVENTS AROUND THE WORLD EVERY YEAR.

The secret to the volunteer movement’s success and growth is driven simply by the passion and joy of the athletes and the support of its volunteers. “You can never get tired of the smiles and high-fives,” said Jason Hart, newly installed Special Olympics Director in Brevard County, “or the joy they have [in doing] the things we take for granted every day.” The Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It includes athletes, mentors, coaches, volunteers, donors and sponsors.
A GROWING ORGANIZATION
The Brevard program has about 500 athletes currently involved, but Hart says there is room for substantial growth with a population of more than 8,000 county residents with intellectual disabilities. “We’re barely scratching the surface,” Hart said.
Hart comes across as something of a force of nature when he talks about the possibilities for Special Olympics in Brevard. Filled with ideas and passion, he first got involved with the organization as a middle-schooler in his native Pennsylvania as a weightlifting and basketball coach. After earning a degree in sport and tourism from Temple University in Philadelphia, Hart pursued a rewarding career as an international adventure guide. Eventually, he returned to the U.S. where he renewed his involvement with Special Olympics as a paddle board coach in Miami. “It’s a powerful feeling shaking hands with someone to congratulate them when you know they don’t like to be touched or seeing someone cheer who’s historically been non-verbal,” Hart said. “Those are simple joys we take for granted.”
CHAMPIONSHIP SOFTBALL Bob Rall and his wife, Gina, have had similar experiences, active in the
Brevard Special Olympics system for almost 13 years, having started out as assistant coaches in the running program. “We were marathon runners and were looking for a goal for the next year,” Rall said. “We saw it listed as a suggested ‘thing to do’ in the new year in Runner’s World Magazine. So we connected with the local group and absolutely fell in love with the athletes.” After that, Bob and Gina and their two children, son Jason and daughter Jenna, also got involved. Since then, Rall started participating in the program’s unified softball team that puts teams of varying and nondisabled athletes together to compete
at the local, regional, state and eventually if they qualify, national level. “It follows similar rules to a co-ed league separated into divisions so the competitions are relatively balanced,” Rall said. “And we’ve had basically the same team playing together for several years.” Tonya Snodgrass, a local volunteer, was coach of the softball team for years before Rall recently took over coaching duties.
USA GAMES
The Special Olympics is not officially connected to the Olympics or the Paralympics, but similarly the organization hosts a “USA Games” once every four years. The first USA

he cheering squad at Kennedy Middle School has two members that make it one of the best in the county. They have Isabella Reid and Taylor Helton who are proving that special-needs kids are able to participate in everyday after school activities. “The best part of coaching special-needs children is seeing them react and feel like they are a part of something. Seeing them get excited before they cheer a game, and simply the joy on their faces,” said Christy Helton, volunteer cheer coach. “They have the chance to learn something new and make new friends.” Isabella, in 7th grade, began cheering for the first time TAYLOR ISABELLA this year and Taylor, in 8th grade, cheered for six years at the Suntree/Viera league level, 8 years at Freedom All Stars, and now for the second year at Kennedy Middle School. Taylor loves that her dad is the physical education teacher and when asked replied, “P.E. and culinary are my favorite classes.” “Growing up is hard for any student and even harder for a special-needs child. Having Taylor involved in the cheer team has allowed her to socialize and be more confident with kids she normally would not have classes with and it has also helped her speech by doing the cheers over and over again,” said Helton. “I know the other girls enjoy their time with them and I can definitely say I enjoy every minute I spend with them too.” 11

Games took place in Ames, IA, in 2006, some 38 years after the first Special Olympics were hosted at Chicago’s Soldier Field in 1968. The Brevard softball team took gold at New Jersey’s Ryder College in 2014 and defended its’ title with Rall coaching in Seattle, 2018. It was announced recently that Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando would host the 2022 Games, which, Rall says, makes the team excited at the potential for a home field three-peat. Since Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the organization, a new world of possibilities has been opened up to people with intellectual disabilities. Children aged 8 and above are eligible to participate in Special Olympic events that happen, as Hart says, “every week, every season, in every county all around the country, all year round.” In Brevard, children ages as young as two can begin in programs learning
the fundamentals of sports. How to throw, run, catch and more. “It’s about empowering these children and adults to never be limited. To never let society limit them,” Hart says. “And how we can help create a better [sport] environment for us all.”
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Special Olympics is free for all athletes and supported extensively by volunteer effort. While there is an ongoing fundraising efforts all year round, there are several featured events throughout the year. But the organization needs help not just in dollars, but in volunteer hours, too. The entire effort from track & field and softball in the spring to basketball and new powerlifting program in the winter survives on help from volunteers. Hart says they always need coaches and mentors in addition to athletes. Monthly meetings are held in the Viera Regional Park Community Center at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. BREVARD
ZOO:
A TRADITION OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
F
OR THE PAST 25 YEARS, VIERA HAS BEEN THE HOME OF THE BREVARD ZOO. THE 77-ACRE ZOO BOASTS MORE THAN 195 SPECIES OF ANIMALS WITH OVER 900 INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS. THE BREVARD ZOO OFFERS UNIQUELY INTIMATE ANIMAL EXPERIENCES SUCH AS KAYAKING THROUGH WETLANDS, HAND-FEEDING GIRAFFES, WALKING WITH KANGAROOS, AND RHINO GROOMING. THESE ACTIVITIES AND MUCH MORE MAKE THE ZOO A FAVORITE DESTINATION AMONG LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL VISITORS ALIKE.
HISTORY OF BREVARD ZOO
Since its opening in March of 1994, the Brevard Zoo has remained a premiere attraction in the Viera community. With land donated by A. Duda and Sons, Inc. and the help of more than 16,000 individuals, the Brevard Zoo was one of the world’s largest volunteer community builds. Andrea Hill, marketing and communications director of the Brevard Zoo, stated that during the Zoo’s nearly 25-year existence they have strived to stay communityminded. “When we update and renovate our spaces, we do community builds where volunteers can renovate and build something new with us,” said Hill. The Brevard Zoo is a not-for-profit dedicated to investing in conservation and community development. The money earned is allocated for upgrading exhibits, animal wellness, local and international conservation projects, education programs and other mission based programs.
“When we update and renovate our spaces, we do community builds where volunteers can renovate and build something new with us.” - Andrea Hill
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
The mission of the Brevard Zoo is to cultivate “Wildlife Conservation Through Education and Participation”. The Zoo fulfills this mission as they “…provide high-quality care for our animals, offer unique educational experience to our guests and the community, support numerous local and global conservation programs, and work with our partners to protect Florida’s wildlife.” Quarters for Conservation is a wildlife program at the Brevard Zoo which demonstrates the Zoo’s involvement abroad through the help of the local community. Every visitor is given the chance to participate by directing Zoo contributions to help various animals in need. Each guest is given a token representing 25 cents with which they can “vote” for their favorite project to support.

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
NOVEMBER 3 - THE 9TH ANNUAL JAZZOO EVENT FEATURED 10 BANDS.
Today, the Brevard Zoo has a “robust volunteer program with more than 400 volunteers, that gave over 81,000 hours of their time last year,” said Hill. These volunteers help with everything from educational programs to selling nectar and seed sticks to feed the birds to helping rehabilitate sea turtles at the Sea Turtle Healing Center. The Zoo continues to encourage public involvement through volunteering as it gives individuals the chance to serve the community through education and conservation in action. Each year, the Brevard Zoo hosts events which provide the opportunity for the Zoo to further invest in community-based programs. Participation in these events allow the Zoo to educate the community on how to further practice conservation in the Brevard community. From Boo at the Zoo in October to Artic Blast Tuesdays during the summer months, there is always a fun-filled event to look forward to at the Brevard Zoo.
16
In November, the Brevard Zoo will host the 9th annual Jazzoo event on Saturday, November 3rd and is anticipated again as “the Zoo’s most exciting, vibrant and energetic annual event” of the year. The 21 and over event with an all-inclusive ticket price included 10 bands throughout the Zoo, unlimited food from over 50 local restaurants, endless drinks from several bars, a cigar lounge and even a sports bar! Last year Jazzoo was the first zero-waste event hosted by the Zoo. Through the partnership with a waste management company, the Zoo was able to accumulate two tons of compostable waste and avoid the use of single-use plastic during the event. A big part of the Zoo’s mission is “…sustainability and working towards having the least carbon footprint possible,” said Hill. This year the Zoo is again working on a way to host an event with the least amount of waste possible. Another special event this season is the Brevard Zoo’s Jolly Days. The event will take place on December 22nd and 23rd from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Event highlights include enrichment gifts to animals and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Zoo will kick off their 25th year with a familyfriendly New Year’s Eve celebration. The ball will drop at noon on December 31st enabling families with young children to celebrate 2019 with apple cider and fun activities. As the Brevard Zoo gears up to turn 25, Viera can look forward to the Zoo’s tradition of community involvement continuing for another 25 years!

T’S A BUSY TIME FOR WHAT COULD BE CALLED DOWNTOWN
VIERA. WITH EXTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT IN PROGRESS ACROSS LAKE ANDREW DRIVE AT THE VIERA TOWN CENTER AND AN EXTENSIVE RENOVATION JUST COMPLETED THIS SUMMER AT THE AVENUE VIERA, THE AREA IS SET TO TAKE CENTER STAGE FOR ANOTHER HOLIDAY SEASON.
20
Plans for the season have been in development for months, well before the lights and decorations go up and Santa and Mrs. Claus are welcomed in to Central Park for the season. From Black Friday through Christmas Eve, the district will be in a steady state of celebration with chorus and music performances, strolling carolers, Victorian carriage rides, lights and decorations culminating in the annual tree lighting and a performance on the evening of December 15th by the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and Youth Strings. A second major renovation of what’s been traditionally a shopping district was completed this past summer and has continued to draw large numbers of children and parents to play in the POP Jet fountain in front of the AMC Avenue 16 cinema.
A SEASON TO SHINE
The completely redeveloped Central Park is attracting residents and visitors alike to The Avenue Viera for more than just shopping excursions these days. The park will serve as the main stage for the holiday season and feature live music throughout the season from church choirs to school choruses and carolers. Children will be able to visit with Santa & Mrs. Claus and there will be complimentary carriage rides offered throughout The Avenue Viera. “Our tenant businesses have really been very patient throughout the renovation,” said marketing coordinator Michelle Bujold. “But we - and they - are all very excited for the holiday season. It’s really our time to shine.” Visitors to The Avenue Viera will notice changes in the type of
businesses in the district, as well, and that’s not by accident, says general manager Kevin Cedik. The Avenue Viera management is actively working to establish a balance that’s attractive to all residents and visitors alike. “The POP Jet fountain is just one amenity designed to appeal to parents and children,” Cedik said. “We’re working to add more family-oriented events to attract all demographics.” Cedik is an open and welcoming presence in the management office. New to the area, he moved here with his family from Cincinnati, Ohio, less than a year ago. It’s notable that he mentions a wide variety of employees from security to custodial personally, by name, as he checks off a list of examples of the kind of exceptional customer service and positive first impression The Avenue Viera tries to perpetuate.
SHOPPING – DINING – ENTERTAINMENT
“People have so many impressions in just the first few seconds they visit a place,” he says. “Many people don’t realize there’s a management office here and it really is a significant effort to be that first line of service for all of our visitors.” Both Cedik and Bujold describe what they are trying to establish as more of an “uptown” feel to the area with new restaurants, boutiques and specialty stores in addition to the larger anchor-type stores. Something more than a shopping mall and more of a neighborhood worth exploring. “What we’re after is a collection of shopping, dining and entertainment choices that appeals to the community on the whole,” Cedik said. “We’re working to have more restaurant and date-night type offerings while still remaining a family-friendly environment.” “This is really the time of year we work hard to open our arms and welcome all of our visitors,” Cedik says. “And it’s a feeling we want to keep going throughout the year.”

After officially opening, Blaze Pizza hosted Free Pizza Day on the 19th to celebrate their joining the community. “Any time we open a new restaurant we try our best to reach out and engage the community. VIERA NEIGHBORHOOD NAMED ONE OF NORTH AMERICA’S BEST FOR GOLF
E
ARLY MORNING IN VIERA MEANS RABBITS NIBBLING ON DEW-WET GRASS, MOCKINGBIRDS CHEERFULLY TRILLING AND GOLFERS TEEING OFF BEFORE THE TEMPERATURES START TO CLIMB. RESIDENTS OF INDIAN RIVER COLONY CLUB LOVE OF THE COMMUNITY AND ARE ONE OF THE TOP 20 GOLF COMMUNITIES IN NORTH AMERICA.
The selection was made recently by the editors of GolfCourseHome.com, a leading online real estate website for U.S. golf properties. Eight amenity categories differentiated the Top 20 Golf Community winners. The 55+ neighborhood of predominantly military retirees was recognized for the Indian River Colony Club Foundation, a not-for-profit entity designed to accommodate the community’s commitment to charitable giving. As the Viera property’s first golf-inspired neighborhood, Indian River Colony Club was originally conceived as a retirement destination for military families. IRCC began to take shape in 1986, its vision to create a private country club-like environment for members. The 453-acre golf course community of nearly 800 homes maintains a culture centered on service to others and is owned entirely by its membership. President of the 120-member Men’s Golf Association at Indian River Colony Club, Ed Baker points out the value of camaraderie in the golf community.
36
“The purpose of the Association is to promote sportsmanship, fellowship and competition in amateur golf,” said Baker. We participate in organized games at least twice weekly, usually with foursomes in friendly competition with other foursomes. In addition to golf, we meet as a group for lunch monthly. Our golfers have varying skill levels and the camaraderie experienced by the membership is unsurpassed anywhere.” A Women’s Golf Association at Indian River Colony also enjoys an enthusiastic membership. For non-golfers, IRCC has a wide array of amenities, including three Har-Tru tennis courts, a heated 3000 sq. ft. swimming pool with lap lanes, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a country club serving casual to gourmet cuisine and on-site Colony Hall for parties, theater, dancing and more. The community has over 40 activity groups and clubs, catering to the individual interests of its members. The IRCC is a unique golf community and truly provides the greater Brevard area with a place for “patriots to call home”. To learn more go to IndianRiverColonyClub.com

TODD POKRYWA, PRESIDENT
A
s many of you may know, I was born and raised in Canada where fall, winter and Christmas look a little different than they do here in Viera. We follow hockey versus football, Tim Hortons is the coffee of choice, and a trip to the beach is replaced with shoveling snow from the front walk. But even though swimming pools replace back yard hockey rinks, Viera’s overwhelming Christmas spirit is equally as strong. The fall season is a very busy time in Viera. Our community is home to many wonderful events that offer opportunities for enjoying time with family and friends. Although it may not feel as if fall has yet arrived, we are not deterred from attending the festivals, fairs, and Thanksgiving celebrations which await us. As autumn 40
HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND MERRY CHRISTMAS VIERA! draws to a close, Viera transitions into the Christmas season with our annual Light Up Viera Holiday Parade. The parade is a tradition for us here in Viera, as it spreads Christmas cheer and kicks off the season with a bang (literally). When I attend festivities such as this, I am reminded of growing up in Canada where the department store windows illuminated festive Christmas themes and I looked forward to a winter break from school, and yes, more hockey. Although many of my winter traditions revolved around snow and ice, my wife, Cyndi and I truly enjoy our Viera winter traditions, such as driving through neighborhoods to view holiday lights, attending mass on Christmas Eve, heading to the beach on Christmas day, and you will always find us along the parade route. Most importantly, as we observe our traditions and move through stressfilled days involving holiday travel, attending celebrations and shopping for that perfect gift, it is now when we are reminded of the true message of this season - to be grateful for our blessings and reach out to those in our community with a helping hand. There are many opportunities for all of us in Viera to harness our strengths and contribute to the efforts of our local churches, nonprofits and other organizations in an effort to extend goodwill and compassion. This season of charity and joy provides an opportunity for us to seek the best in ourselves and others. As we enter into this magical time of year, reflecting upon 2018 reveals exciting change for the community of Viera and for The Viera Company. The Viera Town Center has begun to take shape, our road infrastructure is expanding to provide a new point of ingress/egress into Viera, we have welcomed new businesses, neighbors, and friends to our community and I have taken the helm at The Viera Company as our new President. I am extremely proud that so many have chosen Viera as their workplace and especially their home, and it is an honor to be able to continue to shape the development of this community into a home for many more. From all of us at The Viera Company, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!
The fall season is a very busy time in Viera. Our community is home to many wonderful events that offer opportunities for enjoying time with family and friends.
