Old Rauma – the beating heart of the city Old Rauma was granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Old Rauma is a unique example of an old Nordic wooden town. In Old Rauma, people live, work and enjoy their free time in a historical environment. Located in the centre of the city, the Market Square is surrounded by more than 100 shops and boutiques, as well as several atmospheric ateliers, cafés and restaurants. Distances are short in Old Rauma: shops and sights are located within walking distance from each other. Narrow and meandering streets and lanes are characteristic of Old Rauma, as they follow medieval routes. Typical features are also the asymmetric plots with their impressive gates and wooden fences.

Old Rauma is the most extensive, most complete and best preserved historical wooden town in the Nordic countries. Its prestigious atmosphere and well-preserved buildings provide a unique setting for modern services.
Cafés You can enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee at a traditional café in Old Rauma or choose a modern atmosphere for a relaxing break. The fascinating destinations of Old Rauma
“I value Old Rauma as well as the history and attractions of Rauma.” Kirsti Museum
Church of the Holy Cross
Kirsti's yard and its buildings shed light on the construction methods used in the city in the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Over the course of history, the house has been owned by sailors, workers and craftsmen. Before becoming a museum in the 1970s, it was owned by the same family for 200 years. The museum showcases the lives of owner and renter families in the 20th century. A summer destination.
Around the time that the town was established, a Franciscan brotherhood built a monastery and a church in Rauma. The church was inaugurated in 1512. Later, the monastery was closed down and the church became a Lutheran church. The beautiful Church of the Holy Cross continues to be one of the most popular attractions in Rauma.

Marela Museum Marela is a home museum of merchant and shipowner families. Its main building was given its Neo-Renaissance appearance at the end of the 19th century. At this time, the house belonged to one of the dominant burghers, Gabriel Granlund. The decorative tiled stoves, doors, ceiling paintings and panels relay a story about wealth and the interior design of the museum depict an accurate description of the lifestyle on an old shipowner family. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions.
www.rauma.fi/museo
The Old Town Hall Museum The edge of the square is adorned by the Old Town Hall, which was completed in 1776 and now functions as a museum. It is a baroque-style building, but its basic shape – a two-storey town hall with a clock tower – was a familiar sight in cities already in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, the museum displays lace-making items as well as temporary exhibitions. Kistupuoti, the museum store, has an extensive selection of items for souvenirs.
www.rauma.fi/museo 6
Kalatori Square and the ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity The oldest settlement in the city is presumed to have been located around the Kalatori Square (Fish Market). The waves of the sea were still washing the region in the 14th century. The ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity are located by the Kalatori Square. The church burnt down in 1640.
Hauenguano Hauenguano Square is located at the junction of the two main streets of Old Rauma: Kauppakatu and Kuninkaankatu. The city was surrounded by a toll fence from the beginning of the 17th century until 1808. At the time, entrance to the town was through the Pori customs, which was located in this site. Rauma Art Museum is located in the Pinnala House of Hauenguano, and the area is home to artisans’ workshops and shops.
Kitukränn Kitukränn, often cited as the narrowest street in Finland, runs between Kuninkaankatu and Kauppakatu. Along Kitukränn, you will find an old prohibition sign typeset in Fraktur.
See page 31 for a map of Old Rauma. You can also explore the area with the help of mobile applications. More information is available on the www.visitrauma.fi website, where you can also order a brochure containing maps.

The enigma of the mysterious Sammallahdenmäki is still unresolved Sammallahdenmäki is a unique area of ancient relics and, in 1999, it became Finland's first archaeological site to make the list of World Heritage Sites. This cairn area is an intriguing complex that reflects the religious beliefs and burial practices of a community in Western Finland in the Scandinavian Bronze Age and early Iron Age (1500–50 BCE). Spanning less than one kilometre, the area features 36 burial cairns of different shapes and sizes. The largest and most famous cairn in the area is called Kirkonlaattia, or Church Floor. According to a folk tale, goblins started to build a church that was never completed. This large ancient relic is almost quadrangular in shape, with an even surface.

Seasons colour the scenery, setting the mood
Spring
Summer
Autumn
Nature wakes up in the spring in Sammallahdenmäki: tree buds open, marsh tea spreads its scent, violets and forgetme-nots stretch toward the sun. The sounds of hundreds of migratory birds carry from Saarnijärvi, the old gulf which has become overgrown with grass. A cuckoo is calling, swans and cranes are trumpeting, and little birds are chirping.
The pine forest scenery fills with shades of green and grey. It is peaceful here despite the busy summer season. On sunny days, you can feel the scorching heat on the rocks. When stopping for a drink, you can just marvel at how much time and effort was spent on building the cairns.
In the autumn, the rocks and cairns in Sammallahdenmäki are coloured by moss, lichen and heather. When leaves fall from the trees, the scenery turns transparent. From Kirkonlaattia (Church Floor) you can see far onto the ancient sea and listen to ravens and the humming of the wind – while pondering how the ancient people prepared for the winter.

Rauma Lace Week July 22–30, 2017 www.pitsiviikko.fi
Rauma is a unique city of lace Lace-making is an old tradition in Rauma. Lace has been made in the city at least since the middle of the 18th century and the era of bendels turned out to be a real heyday of fashion. Lacemakers earned such considerable annual income that the governor decided lacemaking was to be regarded as an industry – after all, Rauma had more lacemakers than any other region in Finland. Today, imagination is the only limit for the various uses of lace in Rauma. This is evident in the lacemaking exhibition at Old Town Hall, the museum shop and the Pits-Priia shop of the local lacemaking association, Nyplääjät ry. A new and enthusiastic lacemaking generation keeps growing at a steady pace.

Rauma is proud of its lacemaking tradition and ITS OWN DIALECT
The many faces of lace
Rauma Lace Week
Lace is a versatile item and you cannot avoid seeing it and hearing about it. In addition to traditional linen tablecloths, it has served as inspiration for metal jewellery, choreographies, art, installations, visual images and international lacemaking conferences. Above all, lace and lacemaking unite the people of Rauma, who are proud of their tradition.
Rauma Lace Week is a diverse city festival, known for maintaining the lace tradition, the events organised in Old Rauma and its atmosphere that only a historical maritime city can emanate. The festival comprises over a hundred events and occasions, as well as dozens of concerts and performances. The festival has been organised every year since 1971.
Night of Black Lace, July 28, 2017 The nine-day celebration is capped by the anticipated Night of Black Lace, which is when celebration on the city streets lasts through the night. Every nook and cranny is filled with music, street artists, fairs, large crowds and a happy atmosphere. Staying up on the Night of Black Lace is worth it because the event area, stretching across the centre of the city, has surprising events in every street corner.
Rauman giäl – the local dialect The exact origins of the Rauma dialect are not known, but the dialect has been enriched by foreign words introduced by sailors. Cutting off words and rambling are also characteristic to the dialect. The literary giant of Rauma, Frans Hjalmar Nordling, who wrote under the pen name Hj. Nortamo, became known as a bearer of the Rauma dialect and the Rauma-focused ideology of homestead as well as a master of Rauma's way of having fun.

The Port of Rauma has a railway network that spans approximately 16 km.
A maritime city in the past, in the present and in the future Without the sea and seafaring, the city of Rauma might never have emerged. Rauma is one of the oldest cities in Finland and, much like many other old towns, Rauma has developed from an easily accessible trading centre by the sea into a modern maritime city. Documents suggest that ships have been built in Rauma for around 500 years – although most likely much longer. Trading and seafaring became the most important industries in Rauma in the course of the 19th century. Today, the Port of Rauma is the leading port for paper transportation in Finland and the largest container port on the western coast. The new and dynamic business parks equipped with excellent logistics connections, Seaside Industry Park and Lakari, support the modern development of the city. www.seasideindustryparkrauma.fi, www.lakariarea.fi 20

Boats carry a special significance for people living on the coast. So much so, that the people of Rauma are not really all that interested in how a person died, but rather, they cannot help asking, “What kind of a boat did they leave behind?”
The golden era of sailing ships
Living off the sea In 1870, sailors and their families constituted 40% of the population of Rauma. Shipbuilders, dockers and people who supplied food to sailing ships also relied on the sea for their livelihood. The training of maritime officers was commenced in Rauma in 1880, and the city still provides education for future seafarers.
The City of Rauma sailing ship fleet was the largest in Finland for several years in the 1890s. During the decades of growth in the sailing ship industry, 1840s–1870s, Rauma was inundated by seafaring.

In the summer of 2017, the Fåfänga Summer Theatre will perform “Reinikainen”, based on the TV show which was awarded as the funniest in Finland. The contact details of all Rauma's summer theatres are on page 35 in the brochure and the program calendar is available at www.visitrauma.fi.
Events in the archipelago
A versatile setting
The archipelago of Rauma is also full of nice events. Browse through the event calendar and find your own favourites among the traditional archipelago day, summer theatre, lighthouse day, trail running or unforgettable sailing experiences! The event calendar and the sailing schedule are located at www.visitrauma.fi
The pace of summer in Rauma is set by a string of festivals, bringing various cultural activities to the city. The fantastic August continues the super hot summer. Several festivals in Rauma have long traditions.
