Tina Karol Returns to Lviv April 21st, 20:00 at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Stunning Ukrainian beauty Tina Karol has emerged as one of Ukraine’s most recognizable pop stars thanks to her supple voice and graceful dancing. Leopolitan fans of Karol will have the chance to see her perform live at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre on April 21st, as she brings her I’m Still Loving tour through the city. Karol shot to fame at the tender age of 21 after winning Latvia’s annual New Wave talent show – a post-Soviet hangover that continues to exert influence on the CIS pop scene. Violin Virtuoso Vasyl Popadiuk in Concert March 30th, 19:00 at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Ukraine’s violin virtuoso – Mr. Vasyl Popadiuk – is set to wow Leopolitan music lovers with a special concert at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre on March 30th. Born into an artistic family in Lviv, he moved at a young age to Kyiv. His famous father, Vasyl Popadiuk Sr., fronted the popular Triyisty Muziki group and is a national artist of the F. Verevka State Academic chorus, while his mother Svetlana was a choreographer. Even before the birth of Vasyl Jr., a rather interesting – some might say mystical – legend was born. a pregnant Svetlana was performing with a dance group in Slovakia when a Ukrainian woman presented her with a small, iron violin and the following prophecy: “You will have a boy and he will become a famous violin player.” And that’s exactly what happened! Described as a modern-day Paganini, the talented Vasyl studied at a musical school for gifted children and graduated in violin from the Kyiv Music Conservatory. Later he worked in Kyiv, Moscow, and Canada. Living in Canada for several years, this Ukrainian patriot was even awarded the prestigious Golden Violin of Canada. Vasyl will be joined by his Papa Duke band for his concert on March 30th, which is sure to impress Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city with a spectacular musical gala. Tickets range in price from 100 – 450 UAH. For more information, or to book your tickets today, please visit kasa.in.ua or call (093) 000-0754 or (066) 000-0754.

Jamala in Concert March 31st, 19:00 at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Leopolitan jazz and soul music lovers are in for a treat as the unique musical voice of Jamala is set to grace the stage of Lviv’s beautiful Opera & Ballet Theatre on March 31st as part of her national tour showcasing her latest mini-album ‘Thank You’. Born Susana Jamaladinova to a Crimean Tatar family in Kyrgyzsatan, where her ancestors were forceably resettled to, her family returned to her native Crimea after Ukraine’s independence and the soul singer is now based in Kyiv. The historic events of 2013 left a major impression on the Ukrainian music scene. While Jamala was forced to watch as her homeland was occupied by the Russian military, she also experienced brighter moments: “It’s been an unbelievable year.

Sacred Lviv: The Multicultural Capital of Ukraine G

iven the multitude of monikers the city has been known as – Leopolis, Lemberg, Lwow, Lvov, and now proudly as Ukrainian Lviv – it should be no surprise that the Western Ukrainian capital is known for its multicultural nature. Located, as it were, on an important eastwest trade route, as well as on the fault line between Western- and Eastern-rite Christianity, the city has for most of its existence been the home to over 100 diverse ethnic and national groups, all of which have made a distinctive mark on the city’s history and current modern appearance. Ruled over the centuries at times by Ruthenian princes, Austrian emperors, and Polish kings, Lviv has become famous for its multicultural and multi-religious character. One needs to look no further than Lviv’s wonderful religious architecture to see the impact that these myriad cultures have brought to the city. From the Gothic architecture of the Polish Roman Catholic church, to the beautiful blended architecture of the Armenian Cathedral, to the Renaissance stylings of the UNESCO-recognized Golden Rose Synagogue, to the billowing Byzantine basilicas of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic St. George’s Cathedral, to even any of Lviv’s many marvellous cemeteries, a trip through “Sacred Lviv” has become one of the single, most attractive tourist tours for any guest of the city to understand the history and cosmopolitan nature of the Multicultural Capital of Ukraine. Reflective of this multicultural character, Lviv is renowned for being the home to many different religious groups. The Western

14

Ukrainian capital has seen Catholic and Greek Orthodox worshipers live harmoniously with Jewish and other religious groups for centuries. This unique blend of religion and culture is clearly reflected in the city’s architecture, as each church, temple, synagogue, and cathedral has employed its own unique architectural style. Some of Ukraine’s oldest churches can be found in the ‘Lion City’ and, mercifully, the city’s historic centre suffered only limited damage during WWII. On the other hand, the war brought about an abrupt end to Lviv’s mixed Polish/Jewish/Ukrainian character. The city acquired its predominantly Ukrainian identity under Soviet rule and has, since the 1980s, emerged as one of independent Ukraine’s most culturally vibrant cities.

Touring Sacred Lviv: What to See While any good guidebook or travel website will offer a multitude of choices to touring “Sacred Lviv”, we offer only a few of the finest examples of the different cultures and religions that have made our city so exceptional. What makes “Sacred Lviv” so unique is that Leopolitan churches are fine examples of the diffusion and assimilation of the artistic phenomena of Latin and Byzantine cultures. Let’s begin our tour at the Latin Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Constructed in 1344 by King

LVIV TODAY  |  March 2015

exploring lviv Kazmir the Great, by 1361, on the King’s request, Pope Urban allowed the foundation of a Latin Archeparchy in Lviv. For centuries the cathedral has been changing its looks, so that one can study Lviv’s history just by judging the building’s different appearances over time. In June 2001, the Latin Cathedral was visited by Pope John Paul II. The event was eternalized on a memorial board build right into the cathedral’s walls. Next on our list is the Armenian Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known more commonly as the Armenian Cathedral. This Armenian-Gregorian episcopate was founded in 1362, shortly after the completion of the Latin Cathedral. The construction of the cathedral was financed by wealthy Armenia merchants that had emigrated from Crimea. Several famous Polish architects and painters, including Franciszek Monczynski and Jan Henryk Rosen, were involved in the cathedral’s many reconstructions and restorations. The Jewish Golden Rose Synagogue was erected in 1582 in a courtyard on today’s Fedorov St. Its wonderful Gothic vaults and beautiful Renaissance decorations were, like other Leopolitan synagogues, destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. Presently all that remains at the site is a small plaque commemorating the once grand building. The ruins were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and there are hopes that the building will once again be restored to its previous grandeur. A not-to-miss site for any guest of the city if they are looking to learn about Ukrainian history is Ukraine’s primary Greek Catholic church – St. George’s Cathedral. Built between 1744 – 1761 on the grounds of the old St. George Church and monastery, the temple is one of Lviv’s most important cultural and historical monuments and holds a predominant position in Ukraine’s religious and cultural characters. Completely restored in 1996, the cathedral’s grounds are still undergoing restoration work. Especially notable are the cathedral’s crypt and remarkable bell tower, featuring the oldest bell in Ukraine (cast in 1341). Other popular “Sacred Lviv” tourist destinations in Lviv include special cemeteries, where many tombstones have artistic and historical value and are genuine works of art. One only needs to look at the expanding promotion of Lviv’s sacred sites amongst guidebooks and travel literature to see just how integral they have become in Lviv’s lucrative tourism industry.

Sacred Lviv as a Learning Opportunity Another element that lends itself to the popularity of Lviv’s sacred sites is their relationship with key historical events. Indeed, each of Lviv’s major churches, temples, synagogues, and cemeteries can bear witness to the city’s long and storied past. This may be especially true for religious Poles, as many sites have taken on a symbolic dimension, perhaps even more patriotic than religious. Once ignored, depreciated, or devastated under communism, the sacred relics now serve as a testament to the Polish cultural heritage of the city, and serve as a source of pride for the small Polish community in the city. Other nationalities also visit Lviv on “heritage” trips, including an increasing amount of Jewish and Armenian visitors. They visit Lviv and Galicia to trace the footsteps of their ancestors, and of their nations’ storied histories. It should also be noted that the presence of Lviv’s sacred sites, and their religious lives, have often taken on political overtones. For example, Russian invaders used Orthodox churches as part of a policy to Russify occupied lands, just as Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches served as a symbol of national identity for Poles and Ukrainians, respectively.

From Sacred to Secular – The Transformation of Lviv’s Religious Landscape Lviv is one of those valuable examples of a city where one can easily identify the factors influencing the functions of sacred sites and trace the transformation of these functions with regards to varying political and cultural conditions. Places of worship in Lviv reflect not only the realities of each period of history, but also their Eastern European idiosyncrasies. Certainly, the religious function was dominant at these sacred sites for most of Lviv’s history. They were created and developed as centres of worship where religious ceremonies were practiced and where believers had a defined place to meet their spiritual needs. As many separate ethnicities and denominations were a staple of Leopolitan life since its early days as a city, it has maintained a favourable atmosphere of spiritual acceptance and religious freedom. As a result, not only the major religions, but also religious minorities have had the opportunity to practice their religion and create sacred art. Among the more recent important functions of Lviv’s sacred sites is their importance so far as tourism is concerned. Developing soon after Ukraine’s independence in the early 1990s, as the country adjusted its attitude towards religion and opened its doors to foreign, non-Soviet travellers, Leopolitan sacred sites were among the first ‘must see’ stops in all of Western Ukraine. Churches of all different faiths returned to their owners and were gradually renovated to regain both their spiritual and artistic importance. Particularly attractive for Western tourists are churches that allow visitors to explore the characteristic art and distinctive rituals of Eastern Christianity. With their inimitable architecture, rich and unusual interior design, and unique liturgy, these places of worship are among Lviv’s most sought-after tourist venues. They often offer additional attractions, such as music concerts, museums, or exhibitions to further allow guests of the city to gain a better understanding of their importance and functions. Today, the range of functions performed by sacred sites in Lviv is broader than ever. Churches and cemeteries, which previously were saved for the realm of the sacred, have now merged with the world of the secular in the form of tourism. The uniqueness of places of worship, along with the holy spirituality attached to the sites, becomes an attraction in its own right as it allows visitors to get away from everyday life. The popularity of these sites is intensified by visitors’ desire to get to know new places. It is for these reasons that there is no doubt that Lviv’s sacred sites will not only continue to serve as among the most popular visitor destinations in the city, but will lead the way in Lviv’s bid to become Ukraine’s most attractive tourist destination.

Ukrainian Book Wins Global Recognition W

hile Ukraine’s current political situation remains very difficult, Ukrainian culture has not yet been put on the backburner – it has instead turned out to be in the spotlight. For example, new art initiatives are launched nearly every week. This trend can be interpreted in two ways: on the one hand, Ukrainians are exhausted by the stress of war and are looking for an escape from the dreary political situation; and on the other hand, social developments in the country have provided for deeper artistic appreciation among the Ukrainian citizenry. We, in turn, continue to follow the artistic process and the changes in the cultural map of our country. Last year, the Ukrainian children’s book Stars and Poppy Seeds was selected as the winner of the Bologna Ragazzi Award and also took the Opera Prima prize. The book was created at the Lvivbased Ahrafka creative studio and published by Lviv’s own Old Lion Publishing House. This year, we are pleased to announce that, Lviv’s Ahrafka and Old Lion Publishing House have combined to strike gold once again, as the illustrated book The War

That Changed Rondo was named the winner of the New Horizon category at the ologna Ragazzi Awards. The War That Changed Rondo tells the story of the City of Rondo, a place inhabited by fragile and vulnerable creatures made of glass, paper, or air balloon. While the city starts out as peaceful, one day war descends and brings disaster and darkness. It hurts each resident of Rondo, but three friends – Danko, Zirka, and Fabiyan – begin to defend their city in a very creative way. Fought with light, the war disappears, but not before leaving scars and traces. The City of Rondo adopts the symbol of the red poppy flower to remember the war and its heroes. While giving its readers a window into a difficult and ever-present real-world problem, The War That Changed Rondo puts an emphasis on hope and enlightenment. Since 1966, the Bologna Ragazzi Award has been a coveted prize for publishers from all over the world. The award acknowledges the best graphic and editorial design for children’s books and is one of the most important awards in the field of children’s publishing. Each year over 1000 titles from more than 40 countries compete for the prestigious prize in one of four categories: Fiction; Non-Fiction; New Horizons; and Open Prima. It draws only the finest works from some of the world’s best children’s publishers, ensuring that there is an extremely high level of competition each year. The award has a long history of international collaboration and a forward-looking spirit of cultural and economic community. This year marks the first time that the Old Lion Publishing House will take part in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair – the world’s premiere event for showcasing children’s and young adult books for publishers, agents, and other interested parties. This year’s prestigious Bologna Fiere event is set to take place from March 30 – April 2 and promises a rich programme with a special focus on those who play a key role in the promotion of literature to children and young adults.

Chocolate Fest Returns to Lviv Lviv’s magnificent Art Palace tempted Leopolitans and guests of the city to Lviv’s annual Chocolate Fest last month, where visitors were “treated” to chocolate fountains, chocolate sculpture workshops, and delicious chocolate creations from some of the most exclusive confectionary shops from around Lviv and across Ukraine. One of the most popular activities was the chocolate-making workshop provided by some of the finest professional chocolatiers that Ukraine has to offer. Other popular activities included the chocolate-scented candle-making workshops, the “From Lviv With Love” post-office initiative, and the Chocoland activity area for children. The event’s highlights were certainly the crowning of the 4th annual amateur championship for amateur chocolatiers and the creation of the enormous, 47-kilo Truffle chocolate cake that festival-goers were all too pleased to help devour by the festival’s end.

Shakespeare’s Reincarnation Ballet Lviv’s hallowed National Opera House was the site of last month’s premiere performance of Shakespeare’s Reincarnation – a one-act ballet based on Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet, including the Reincarnation choreography from Britten’s Simple Symphony. This modern interpretation showcased the beautiful costumes of Oksana Zinchenko and the splendid choreography of Nikita Dolgushin and Sergiy Naenko, best known to the Leopolitan theatre-going public for their 2013 staging of the stunning The Gypsy Baron operetta. If you missed this spectacular show, you can catch it again during its encore on March 27th.s.

Talented designer Anastasiya Vasylyk with daughter

Newly presented brand “Chycheree” Young and talented Ukrainian fashion designer Anastasiya Vasylyk treated Leopolitan fashionistas to her exquisite “Chycheree” brand collection at Lviv’s Ratusha restaurant on March 7. The inspiration behind this wonderful collection is a return to the source of national consciousness – to the cradle of the Ukrainian soul. Anastasiya Vasylyk based her creations on a modern interpretation of the image of a Ukrainian nobleperson, naturally adapting ethnic motifs to contemporary society and lifestyle. She attempts to revive the national esthetics of Ukrainian fashion by using modern fit and cut techniques as well as handmade embroidery. The Chycheree collection offers spectacular outfits not only for the youngest but for those looking to add a little ethno style to their wardrobe. As Kateryna Sadova-the first Lviv lady outlined, “Such clothes are not only meant for specific occasions, we may wear it whenever we feel like”.

World of Cats The World of Cats exhibition opened at Lviv’s B. Voznitskyi Art Gallery on March 12th. This jolly and colourful exhibition is, as the title suggests, dedicated to cats. Opened to mark International Cat Day (March 1st), the exhibition displays works from its own collection, as well as by several local Leopolitan artists, including: S. Savchenko, V. Bohuslavskyi, R. Romanyshyn, S. Hay and O. Denysenko. Why do we love cats? Why are they one of the most viral entities amongst Generation Xers and Millennials? Why are feline musings simultaneously among the most popular internet memes, as well as one of the largest causes of animosity in social media? Don’t worry – this exhibition won’t answer any of these questions. Nor will it project any theories as to the impact of cats on our rapidly changing contemporary photography landscape. But it will give you a glimpse into how cats make their way into the work of so many artists. So be sure to stop by the Lviv Art Gallery (3 Stefanyka St.) throughout March to check out this quirky and unique art showcase.

According to Slonov, the exhibition was originally commissioned by Sochi city administration; however, only days before its opening, found it banned by the same authorities.

February saw an incredible reversal-of-fortune for Lviv’s SuperLeague basketball team Politekhnika-Halychyna, as the previously 1-19 club won all four February games as part of an amazing 5-game win streak. The team used a strong defense – averaging nearly 20 turnovers in each of the victories – as well as standout performances by guard Mykola Polyulyak (12.6 points/game average and two double-doubles) and former international forward Yaroslav Zubrytskyi (10.4 points/game average). The run was ended, unfortunately, by 7th-place Ferro-ZNTU with a 76:88 home loss on March 10th. While the unexpected run of success has moved the boys in green out of the 11-team league’s basement into 10thplace (6-21), the loss officially eliminated the team from postseason contention. The disappointing loss to FerroZNTU closed out the home schedule for the team, as they end the season with three straight March road games in the hopes of staying ahead of last-place DniproAzot.

Monthly news and views from the European Business Association’s Western Ukraine office

EBA PERSONALITY Can we start with an introduction of yourself and an overview of your company? Mr. Chernyshov was appointed Kyivstar CEO on June 25, 2014. Before that, he worked at the Carlsberg Group. In 2006, Mr. Chernyshov was ranked among the top-10 Ukrainian executives by Companion magazine, and Peter Chernyshov, in 2007 was named the best executive Kyivstar CEO in beer and beverages category in the annual rating TOP-100. Ukraine’s Best Top Managers. Before moving to Ukraine, Petro worked in Great Britain (United Utilities Plc), Italy (ABB), Sweden (BBH), and Russia (Baltica and Vena). In 1990, he graduated from the Mathematics and Mechanical Department of the Ural State University in Yekaterinburg, and in 2000 he received his master’s degree from the Moscow Academy of Economy. While working in BBH, he successfully completed an MBA course in Kingston University, UK. Kyivstar is a nationwide operator leading Ukraine’s telecommunications market. We have almost 26 million subscribers across all regions. What drives you in your professional and personal life? My goal lies not in making my employees happy, but in increasing market share and revenue. If I manage to make my employees happy along this, that’ll make the whole thing even better. Work takes up so much space in my life that it’s hard to distinguish between my personal and corporate goals now. My goal is to make Kyivstar a prosperous company. As for the goals unrelated to business, it’s giving my kids the best education I can pay for. What are your personal recommendations for anyone who wants to be successful in business? Doing business entails taking unpopular decisions. Often making people sad or forcing them to do things simply comes with the territory. Doing your job is not all fun and games, as they say. It’s not quite like that. You often have to cut costs, or spearhead the projects that many don't agree with, but that have to be done anyway. Eventually, it’s the ability to take unpopular, unpleasant, and often rough decisions that gets to be valued most in you. And that’s something most politicians usually try to avoid. If you are in business and suffer too much populism, you’ll find it hard to move on. Could you share your business success story? I believe every top manager has to set daring objectives to his or her employees. Of course, I realize that sometimes people leave the meeting thinking: “Our boss must be going nuts”. If that’s the kind of thought they get after every meeting, then there’s definitely something wrong with you. But if your crazy

goal is combined with the right motivation and alternates with realistic tasks, such approach bears fruit. Oftentimes, executives think they’re smarter than their subordinates. What I think, you’ve got to be a really stupid manager to come up with all the ideas yourself. When you are a smart manager, your goal is to wake up your employees to conceiving new ideas and surprising you with those. I personally believe that my employees themselves know quite well what to do. Sometimes they don’t tell about it, remembering the saying that ‘no good deed ever goes unpunished’, and sometimes they doubt they proposal will ever be implemented. Thus, my goal here is to create an environment in which people are willing to share their vision. It happens sometimes that a company has too many people generating ideas, but only a few that are able to have those properly and diligently executed. That’s an extremely dangerous situation, which hinted me at adopting my current management approach: “Execute or be executed”. What is the most important management lesson you have learned? Ability to say “No” Managers are usually judged by their projects. However, I believe it’s also important to look at what projects the manager was able to turn down. In companies like Kyivstar, you have about 200 projects discussed every year. We implement part of those, and discard the rest. There’s that common mistake of jumping in on a project that won’t be successful. What projects you give up on is what you get judged by at the end of the day. The company is unable to handle all 200 projects. That said, try to concentrate not on the projects you accomplished, but on the ones you discarded, even though they go unnoticed to anyone else. How do you position your company on the market? Kyivstar is a nationwide operator leading Ukraine’s telecommunications market. We almost 26 million subscribers across all regions. Our mission lies in providing top-quality service and affordable and reasonable price. That’s why we’re investing hundreds of millions of hryvnias annually into the infrastructure development. In 2014, we paid almost UAH 4 billion in tax to the country’s treasury. That’s 1% of all taxes collected in Ukraine within the last year. What is your top priorities for the next 12 months? Do everything to make 3G connectivity available to Ukrainians in the shortest possible term. We are already testing new generation Internet connection in Kyivstar’s headquarters with many experts with broad international background involved in rolling out the 3G network. Do you have any plans for expansion? What are your growth ambitions? All our plans are related to introducing next generation connectivity in Ukraine. We are hopeful that the state, the regulator, LVIV TODAY  |  March 2015

and the Defense Ministry (which still has to perform frequency conversion to free up the required bands) will do all they can to assist operators (including Kyivstar) in the fastest 3G deployment. Kyivstar is actively updating the infrastructure, invests into the network, and will be ready to provide 3G services within the set timeframe. One of our main ambitions is building and launching top-quality mobile Internet. What key market drivers are positively impacting your business? It’s hard to talk about the drivers positively impacting the business now. Today, exchange rate is the major influence, which may impact pace at which 3G network will be deployed in Ukraine. We buy a lot of equipment with foreign currency, while all our revenues are in hryvnia. That said, an average mobile bill in our country is UAH 36 (a bit more than a dollar). At the same time, in Belarus and Moldova this number goes up to USD 5-6. However, I’d like to note that there are still some positive aspects to the situation. Like the transparent 3G bidding procedure proving that corruption is lowering its pressure and we’re getting a good sign the upcoming reforms may turn out quite successful. The EBA focuses its actions on 7 vectors of economic development- Corruption fighting, Court system and Land reform, Currency regulation, VAT refund activation, Customs Procedures simplification and Technical barriers to trade elimination. Which one(s) so you foresee as the most vital and why? 1. Corruption fighting. 2. Court reform 3. Eliminating technical barriers What in your opinion can be done to improve investment attractiveness of Ukraine? If we see the companies like Ikea and EasyJet voicing their intention to enter Ukrainian market in 2015, this will mean we have reforms going on in the country. If this doesn’t happen, there are no reforms. You can endlessly tell about cancelled licenses, dismissed officers, some other activities – I don’t believe in that. Investment climate remains the key indicator of every reform’s efficiency. These are the two companies that are painfully intolerant to bribery, and they act as an acid test for our reforms. How do you think what reforms or actions should be made by Ukrainian government in order to improve business climate in Ukraine and Lviv region in particular? One of my colleagues from Amsterdam and I have recently had a meeting with an ambassador of one of European countries. He told us that companies in his country are willing to invest into Ukraine, but they want to receive that signal – the signal that we have a stable political situation in the country and an ongoing judicial reform. That’s their number one concern. Even the tax reform is secondary. The major Ukrainian issue is the protection of private assets, that’s the major problem. When you invest in the country without being sure that you won’t have some oligarch, MP’s son, or fire safety inspector come to you and say that your assets now belong to him, because I tempered with the registry’s entries, and you lost a legal proceeding you had no idea about, or because I imposed a tax fine on you that you won’t be able to pay. While things like this remain possible, good investments will only come from the companies like our, having powerful legal department able to protect our rights. An average European business is afraid of things of the sort. If we have an appropriate judicial reform launched in Ukraine, if we have this process up and running – Ukraine will be alright.

Lviv opinion

Currency crash offers tourism sector silver lining Hryvnia woes serve to make Ukraine one of Europe’s cheapest holiday destinations companies are in survival mode and massive price increases are simply not realistic. This means that everything from high-end restaurants and top-quality hotels to taxi services and souvenirs just became ridiculously cheap. Visitors to Kyiv can enjoy a 5-star experience for budget travel prices. Ukraine’s incoming tourism industry must now work to actively raise awareness of the country’s value-for-money holiday options. They must swallow their pride and promote Ukraine as the cheapest destination in Europe. Post-Soviet Ukrainian tourism was an under-developed sector at the best of times. In the past year it has faced the added obstacle of having to convince would-be tourists that the country is safe, despite the images of revolution and war being beamed out to global TV audiences. By marketing Ukraine’s unbeatable value for money, incoming tourism operators will be able to trump security fears by appealing directly to people’s wallets and their love of a bargain. Any increase in the flow of foreign tourists to Ukraine is unlikely to be sufficient to balance the depleted state budget. Nor will it lead to a surge in demand for the hrynvia itself. However, it could help numerous small businesses make it through the current challenging times, while also introducing thousands of Europeans to today’s Ukraine. Many of these visitors will return home with positive things to say about Ukraine, providing priceless PR for the country at a time when Ukraine is struggling to convince international audiences that it is worth fighting for.

It is difficult to identify any positives from the fall of Ukraine’s hryvnia national currency. The dramatic drop in the exchange rate has left whole sections of Ukrainian society impoverished and forced the government to adopt a range of emergency economic measures which could serve to impede the development of the broader Ukrainian economy for years to come. The opposite is true for visitors coming to Ukraine armed with foreign currency. Prices had been steadily creeping up in Ukraine since the dirt cheap days of the 1990s, and for the past few years prices had been pretty close to European norms. Indeed, prior to the Euromaidan Revolution, it had become common for visitors to Ukraine to moan that the country was markedly more expensive than other east European destinations such as the Czech Republic and Poland. All that has now changed, with the slide of the hryvnia serving to make Ukraine one of the cheapest countries in the whole of Europe – if not the entire northern hemisphere. Nor is inflation likely to even out the changes in the purchasing power of foreign currency. As the Ukrainian national currency has tumbled, inflation has risen sharply, but not sharply enough to keep pace with the dramatic decline in the value of the hryvnia. Local goods and services providers simply cannot afford to hike up prices in line with the hryvnia drops, as to do so would mean scaring off the few remaining clients they have left. Instead, the current trend is towards keeping pre-drop prices in place as much as possible, while accepting the inevitable reduction in real-time revenues which this entails. Ukrainian
