Lviv will host its annual international festival of Jewish music, song, and dance – LvivKlezFest – from July 1–13. The event showcases plenty of Klezmer music, dancing, and singing. Visitors can expect to see performances from famous groups, dance bands, and family choirs from across Central and Eastern Europe. The festival offers Leopolitans and guests of the city the wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with Jewish customs and traditions, to taste delicious Jewish cuisine, to dance to Jewish folk music, and to make handmade souvenirs in special workshops. LET’S BIKE IT! 12:00 – 18:00 on June 28 – 29 on square near Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1 Universytetska St.) A velopolo tournament between Custom Bicycle Club (Franky Kustom Family) and Lviv Hardcourt Bike Polo (LHBP) will take place in Lviv at the end of June. Velopolo, or Bike Polo, is a team sport that is similar to traditional polo except that bicycles are used instead of horses. The game was invented by retired cyclist Richard J. Mecredy in Ireland in 1891 and already by 1901 the first international match was held between Ireland and England. There are two versions of the sport: Grass and Hardcourt. The hardcourt game has seen a sharp spike in interest since 2007 as new teams are sprouting up across the world. ROVER FILM FEST 2014 June 14th & June 20th, 20:00–23:00, The Square near Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1 Universytetska St.) Grab your bike and your love of film and ride along with Rover Film 2014 screenings that are set to take place among the ‘Urban Workshop’ activities on June 14th and June 20th. Each year more and more Leopolitans are riding bikes and identifying bike riding as part of their lifestyle. Recognizing this, the Rover Film Fest was organized with the help of Wiz-Art to provide a unique opportunity to celebrate bicycling in its myriad forms with open-air screenings of only the finest selection of short films. The audience of Rover Film Fest tends to by comprised by young, trendsetting urbanites that love and identify with film, art, music, and sports. Наприкінці червня у Львові відбудеться турнір з велополо між командами «Franky Kustom Family» та Lviv Hardcourt Bike Polo (LHBP). Вело поло - це командний вид спорту, схожий на традиційне поло, з тією різницею, що замість коней використовуються велосипеди. Гру вигадав у 1891 році колишній спортсмен-велосипедист, Річард Дж. Мекреді з Ірландії, і вже в 1901 році відбувся перший міжнародний матч між командами Ірландії та Англії. У велополо грають або на траві, або на твердій поверхні. WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM WORLD CUP 2015 MATCHES IN LVIV June 14th & 19th, Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.).) The Ukrainian women’s national football team has been representing the nation since August 1993. Their first major tournament they qualified for was the 2009 UEFA Women’s EURO in Finland. Their most recent competition is qualification for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. The team will host two 2015 World Cup qualification matches here in Lviv on June 14th and 19th against winless Montenegro and undefeated England. Both matches are to be held at the new Arena Lviv. The match against Montenegro will be the first home game during qualification for Anatoliy Kutsev’s team as the match against Belarus had been moved from April to August 2nd as per the recommendations from UEFA. The Ukrainian team currently ranks 3rd in Group 6 of the 2015 qualifying round, but has two games in hand and has yet to play any at home. The top team qualifies automatically for the World Cup in Canada, while the top 4 of 7 runners up will play an additional playoff to determine the final two European World Cup positions. EXTREME GORGANY RACE 2014 June 28–29, Carpathian Mountains The Gorgany is an extreme sports adventure race in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains that combines several endurance disciplines, including: orienteering, running, trekking, mountain biking, and rope activities. It is one of the leading adventure events in Ukraine and attracts athletes and amateurs from all over the country. The race is held each June in the Gorgany region of the Carpathians – the wildest and most uninhabited area of the entire mountain range. Gorgany is known for its challenging terrain and numerous natural obstacles. This year the race features the following formats: SPRINT 24 hours (trekking/running, orienteering); TREK 30 hours (trekking/ running, orienteering, rope activities); and BIKE 30 hours (mountain biking, trekking/running, orienteering, rope activities). Це одна з головних пригодницьких подій в Україні, яка приваблює професійних спортсменів і аматорів з різних куточків країни. Перегони проводяться щороку в червні у гірській області Горгани – у найдикіших і найбезлюдніших місцях Карпатських гір, відомих складним рельєфом місцевості і численними природними перешкодами. KINOPIXEL FILM FEST June 17–19, Lviv Polytechnic University (12 S. Bandery St.) The Kinopixel Film Fest is an annual competitive short film festival open to amateur filmmakers and held at Lviv Polytechnic University. The event has been organized by students and teachers at the university since 2011 and aims to give young filmmakers a festival to screen their films. This year’s theme is ‘All About Love’ and accepts amateur entries of up to 45 minutes in the genres of: fiction, animated, and motion. Prizes are awarded for the best film in each category. RAKOVETS MUSIC FESTIVAL June 28–29, 10:00 in Village of Rakovets, Pustomyty District (20km from Lviv) Leopolitan music lovers and fans from across Western Ukraine are set to be delighted with Western Ukraine’s newest music festival tradition – Rakovets Fest – which is set to take place for the first time in the picturesque Village of Rakovets, near Lviv, from June 28-29. The festival’s mainstage lineup will feature the bands: Antitela, Tin Sontsa, Flit, Roch-H, RIZUPS, Cover Jame, Kvitka Roky, S.W.D., Loksit, and Hochy Scheshe, as well as vocalists Ivan Syarkevych, Natalya Stpanyak, and others. A special feature of the festival will be the Art Stage, which will allow guests to relax while listening to some enchanting poetry and literary readings. The festival’s rich and colourful program promises to offer some good ole’ Cossack-style entertainment, as well as knights tournaments, American football matches, delicious Ukrainian kulish, and a fair of handmade goods and collectibles. GLOBAL MUSIC DAY June 21st in City Centre The Fête de la Musique, AKA the worldwide celebration of music, is an annual music festival that takes place every June 21st in cities around the world. It was created by Jack Lang, the former French Minister of Culture, and first celebrated in Paris in 1982. Since then, the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated each year in more than 460 cities in 110 countries around the world, including here in Ukraine. The primary objective of the event is to promote music and provide amateur and professional musicians with the possibility to perform for an audience. The event’s slogan – Faites de la Musique (Make Music) –a homophone of Fête de la Musique, is used to promote this goal. The day is marked by a bevy of free concerts, making music of all genres accessible to the public. Two of the main rules of any officially-sanctioned Fête de la Musique event are that the concerts must be free to the public and performers must donate their time for free. ВСЕСВІТНІЙ ДЕНЬ МУЗИКИ 21 червня, центр міста Свято музики (Fête de la Musique) - це щорічний музичний фестиваль, який проходить 21 червня у містах всього світу. Вперше його запропонував і створив французький міністр культури Жак Ланг у 1982 році в Парижі. Відтоді, фестиваль став міжнародним явищем, об’єднуючи музикою понад 460 міст у 110 країнах, включно з Україною. Основна мета фестивалю - пропаганда музики і надання аматорам і професійним музикантам можливості виступити перед аудиторією. Гасло фестивалю – «Творити музику» - повністю відображає його ідею. У цей день відбувається багато безкоштовних концертів, на яких представлені всі музичні жанри. ‘RÉSONANCE’ ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM ‘ROCKHITS’ IN LVIV June 16th, Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Symphonic orchestra Résonance brings their new concert program ‘Rockhits’ to Lviv’s picturesque Opera & Ballet Theatre on June 16th. Interactive fun zone for children July 04 –August 31, 2014 Lviv Art Palace (17, Kopernika str.,) During two summer months, starting from July 04 and till August 31, Lviv Art Palace will host multimedia exhibition ”Interactive fun zone for children”, the event organized by WRO Art Center (Wroclaw, Poland). The “Interactive fun zone for children” is an exhibition of interactive media installations for the youngest audiences, truly a pioneering project both in the technological sense and in the way the pieces interact with the public. The set of six installations, creates an immersive experience and lets viewers generate images and sounds on large screens in real time, by playing.

Art Pole festival July 08 – 12, Unizh village (Ivano-Frankivsk region) The annual Art Pole Folk Festival of music, theatre, and art will take place in the picturesque Village of Unizh for the final time. The festival’s organizers have decided to add the spirit of adventure and travel to the event and will change the event’s location every year beginning in 2015. This means that this year’s festival will be very special and will offer guests a rich program full of pleasant surprises. Art Pole 2014 is wonderful place for artists from across Ukraine to meet and will also involve guests from as far away as Australia, Mozambique, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Turkey. Each year, Art Pole presents its guests with numerous literary readings, film screenings, art monuments, myriad workshops, crafts, health & wellness classes, and much more. The event’s highlight is expected to be the musical-literary performance on July 11th by recognized writer Yuriy Andrukhovych and the band Karbido. Advance ticket prices are 220 UAH for full schedule (July 8–12) or 120 UAH for the weekend (July 11–12). 30 UAH will be added to each ticket for those that purchase on-site at the festival. Among installations will come: PAINTING WITH LIGHT where children can play with luminous toys, while their movements are recognized by the motion-detection system and, in real time, special software transforms the data into abstract images and sounds. The sizes, forms and colors of the images displayed on the screen correspond with the positions of the toys set in motion by users. TEXTURES is a work integrating acoustic, visual and tactile experiences. A motion-detection system records the movements of hands touching one of five natural surfaces – stones, water, steam, tree bark and grass – activating a big-screen projection of sight and sound with photograph-based animations of the changing natural world. The projections vary depending on the number and sequence of surfaces activated. RGB is a spatial arrangement of nine transparent plexiglass cubes in the additive primary colors – red, green and blue. Holes in the cubes allow users to set up any combination of filters and to create mazelike passages that the children can explore. The phenomenon of additive color mixing can be observed from both inside and outside the cubes. Custom-made kaleidoscopes designed for viewing the installation enhance the effect. Інтерактивний ігровий простір для дітей 4 липня – 31 серпня Львівський Палац мистецтв (вул. Коперника, 17) Майже цілі два літні місяці з 04 липня і до 31 серпня у Львівському Палаці мистецтв пройде мультимедійна виставка "Інтерактивний ігровий простір", організована за співпраці з WRO Art Center (Вроцлав, Польща). Це надзвичайно цікава виставка інтерактивних інсталяцій для найменших глядачів, справжній новаторський проект, як в технологічному аспекті, так і в його взаємодії з публікою. Шість інсталяцій створюють ефект занурення і дозволяють учасникам створювати під час гри зображення і звуки на великих екранах у режимі реального часу. Серед експонатів виставки будуть, зокрема: Малювання світлом, де діти можуть бавитись з іграшками, що світяться, а їх рухи розпізнають спеціальні сенсори, і в режимі реального часу спеціальне програмне забезпечення перетворює ці сигнали в абстрактні образи та звуки. Розміри, форми і кольори образів на екрані відповідають положенням іграшок, якими бавляться діти. Текстура, де поєднуються звукові, візуальні і тактильні враження. Датчик руху записує рухи рук, що торкаються однієї з п'яти природних поверхонь – каменю, води, пари, кори дерева і трави – і система проектує на великий екран рухомі картинки і звуки мінливого світу природи. Зображення змінюються залежно від кількості і послідовності активованих поверхонь. RGB - дев'ять прозорих кубів з оргскла, забарвлених у червоний, зелений та синій кольори, розташовані в просторі. Діти, що граються, можуть встановити будь-яку комбінацію світлофільтрів і створити лабіринт, по якому можна пересуватись. Ефект змішування кольорів можна спостерігати як всередині, так і зовні кубів. ITALIAN CINEMA WEEK 2014 June 20–24, Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernika St.) Fans of modern Italian cinema will not want to miss Italian Cinema Week in Lviv, set to take place at the end of June at the Lviv Art Palace. Classic Italian films were quite popular in Ukraine in the 1970s and organizers are hoping that Italian Cinema Week will give fans the opportunity to acquaint themselves with more modern Italian cinema in order to continue the tradition of cultural interaction between the two nations. Guests of the festival will be treated to four motion pictures: Il Futuro (2013), Sacro GRA (2013), Mi Rifaccio Vivo (2013), and Il Conformista (1970). Il Futuro is a drama based on Roberto Bolaño's novel ‘Una Novelita Lumpen’. The Alicia Scherson-directed film was shot in Italy, Chile, and Germany, and stars Manuela Martelli and Rutger Hauer. The picture is an Italian-Chilean-German-Spanish production. Sacro GRA is a documentary directed by Gianfranco Rosi. It was the first documentary to win the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. The movie depicts life along the Grande Raccordo Anulare – the ring road that encircles Rome. The film was inspired by Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’, a novel in which the explorer Marco Polo is imagined describing his travels to Kublai Khan, the Emperor of China. Sergio Rubini’s comedy Mi Rifaccio Vivo is also set to be featured during the festival. It is an in-depth analysis of contemporary Italian society. It tells the story of Biagio who, after spending most of his life being defeated by his rival Ottone, tries to commit suicide – only in the afterlife he is offered the chance to come back to life for a week. The final film being featured during the festival is Il Conformista (The Conformist), a 1970 political drama directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. The Bertoluccicrafted screenplay is based on the 1951 novel ‘The Conformist’ by Alberta Moravia. The film features Jean-Louis Trintignant and Stefania Sandrelli, among others. Tickets price: 15 UAH. Фестиваль італійського кіно, який розпочнеться у Львові наприкінці червня – це чудова нагода переглянути найкращі стрічки сучасного італійського кінематографа. Класичні італійські фільми 70-х років були дуже популярні в Україні, тому організатори Тижня італійського кіно бажають познайомити українських глядачів з сучасним італійським кіно та продовжити традицію культурної співпраці двох європейських країн. У ньому зображується життя навколо римської кільцевої дороги, яку будували з 1948 до 2011 року. Д. Розі займався зйомками понад два роки, і ще вісім місяців пішло на редагування фільму. За словами режисера, його надихнув роман Італо Кальвіно «Невидимі міста», в якому мандрівник 13–14 століть Марко Поло нібито описує свою подорож до Китаю. Також в рамках Тижня італійського кіно в Україні буде показана комедія Серджіо Рубіні Mi rifaccio vivo. В ній подається поглиблений аналіз сучасного італійського суспільства на прикладі історії підприємця Бьяджо, який, не витримавши поразки від свого суперника в бізнесі, намагається вчинити самогубство, але йому надається шанс на тиждень повернутись до життя. До програми Тижня італійського кіно також увійшла політична драма 1970 року Il Conformista (Конформіст) режисера Бернардо Бертолуччі. The much anticipated international festival of retro automobiles – the Leopolis Grand Prix – will be held in Lviv from June 27–29. As part of the event’s varied programming, enthusiasts can catch the car carnival parade, theatre and costume contests, and of course, the traditional rally of historic autos. The event is being held by the ZAZ Kozak auto fan club along with the Lublin Auto Club (Poland). The festival’s main event will be the car racing along the historic ‘Lviv Triangle’ route (Vitovskogo St. to Stryiska St. to Heroiv Madany St.). This circular auto racing circuit was formerly held on Lviv’s streets as part of the international Grand Prix series – the predecessor of Formula 1. The track was designed in 1927, but the first event took place only in 1930. Plenty of other activities are planned for festival-goers, including outdoor exhibitions of retro cars, a retro parade downtown, special car-themed fashion shows, fairs, concerts, and even auto shows for the smallest auto enthusiast. Довгоочікуваний міжнародний фестиваль і перегони ретро автомобілів "Леополіс Гран-прі» знову відбудуться у Львові 27–29 червня. Grand series of pastel paintings “Presence” was created by Maryan Besaga as specific aesthetic adaptation of world perceptions, in consecution of their fluidity and intonational profusion. In the methodology of present day’s abstractionism, with effectively mastered internal liberty, the artist created spectacular collection of intangible by direct impressions, yet rhythmical “imaginary milieu” of particular substances of presence as visual game, as mystery, as dip into the unforeknowable.

Ukrainian Film a Hit at Cannes

UKRAINE’S SUCCESS

ven as the Ukrainian economy slips into recession and our army prepares for war, Ukrainian culture continues to flourish. Ukrainian director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy’s feature film “The Tribe” (Plemya) qualified for the official screening list at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last month. The film was nominated for the festival’s Golden Camera Award and walked home with several honours, including the Nespresso Grand Prize, the France 4 Visionary Award, and the Gan Foundation Support for Distribution prize. The Tribe focusses on the lives of deaf teenagers at a special boarding school. The strongest among them call themselves ‘the tribe’ and Serhiy – the film’s main character – feels desperate to join their clique and deal with the boarding school’s criminal social hierarchy. The entire film is told in sign language, which has helped turn the movie into a critical hit. The Tribe is Slaboshpytsky’s feature film directorial debut. It is his second film about deaf people, following the critically acclaimed short film “Deafness” (2010) that qualified for the competition list at the Berlinale festival.

ьогодні, коли українська економіка і вся країна переживають не найкращі часи, українська культура продовжує процвітати. Художній фільм українського режисера Мирослава Слабошпицького "Плем’я" взяв участь у офіційному показі на престижному Канському кінофестивалі минулого місяця, де він був єдиним українським фільмом. Стрічка була номінована на премію «Золота камера» і отримала кілька відзнак, в тому числі Гран-прі Nespresso, Visionary Award телеканалу France 4 і грант від фундації Gan.

У фільмі зображується життя глухих підлітків у спеціальній школі-інтернаті. Найсильніші з них називають себе "Плем'я" і Сергій – головний герой фільму – відчайдушно намагається приєднатися до них і дати якийсь лад зі злочинною ієрархією інтернату. Весь фільм супроводжується мовою жестів, завдяки чому він став справжнім фурором на фестивалі. Фільм "Плем'я" – це режисерський дебют Мирослава Слабошпицького. Це вже його другий фільм про глухих, перший короткометражний фільм «Глухота» (2010) був сприйнятий критично, але потрапив на кінофестиваль Berlinale.

LVIV AND OKEAN ELZY "20 YEARS TOGETHER"

The most popular band in post-Soviet CIS, Lviv’s own Okean Elzy, hosted a spectacular music event at Arena Lviv on May 31st. The ’20 Years Together’ program featured a selection of the band’s most iconic compositions from their 8 best-selling albums. The band has been called the main Ukrainian energy source and, as his fans say, ‘if (group frontman Svyatoslav) Vakarchuk writes a ballad, it will bring us to tears; if he writes a rock hymn, it will make us tear our shirts and jump to the sky.’ Despite the rain and the cold and even the onehour delay, the three hours long performance finally turned into a real exchange of energy between the band and nearly 40 thousands of its biggest fans.

На стадіоні «Арена Львів» 31 травня відбувся захоплюючий концерт культового рок-гурту "Океан Ельзи" з програмою «20 років разом», до якої увійшли найкращі твори з 8 успішних альбомів. Слухачам не перешкодила ні негода, ні безперервний дощ – усіх зігрівали емоції, почуття єднання і відкритості. Віддані фанати «Океану» говорять, що якщо Вакарчук пише баладу, то ми плачемо, якщо він пише рок-гімн, то ми зриваємо з себе сорочки і стрибаємо до неба. Незважаючи на холодний дощовий вечір і годину затримки, концерт, що тривав майже 3 години, став справжнім обміном енергією між музикантами і майже 40 тисячами слухачів.

Lviv’s wine enthusiasts gathered to celebrate World Malbec Day – Argentina’s emblematic grape and wine – at the PANORAMA Lviv Hotel on May 15th. The event, organized by representatives of the Argentinian Embassy in Ukraine, provided a great opportunity for connoisseurs and novices alike to sample some of Argentina’s flagship marques. Although Malbec is stunningly popular around the world, few in Ukraine knew anything about the grape just 10 years ago. Luckily, today Malbec represents a great value for those in search of bold-yet-approachable red wines. World Malbec Day was created by Wines of Argentina to commemorate April 17th, 1853, the day when Argentine President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento first asked his government to invest in the nation’s agricultural industry. The first World Malbec Day was celebrated worldwide in 2011 and has been a resounding success. This year the tasty red was celebrated in more than 60 events in 55 cities across 44 countries around the world, including here in Lviv, Ukraine.

UKRAINE-CANADA BUSINESS FORUM The Ukraine-Canada Business Forum, jointly hosted by the Lviv Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Lviv Regional State Administration, Lviv City Council, and the Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce, was hosted in Lviv from May 29–30. The event was held under the auspices of the Governments of Ontario and Saskatchewan and featured such special guests as: Troy Lulashnyk, the Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine; Zenon Potichny, CUCC President; Hennadiy Chizhikov, President of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce & Industry; and Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. Other participants came from regional chambers of commerce & industry, government officials from both Ukraine and Canada, regional authorities, and various other experts. The forum’s programs featured meetings, negotiations, and roundtable discussions between Ukrainian and Canadian entrepreneurs working in the fields of agriculture, information technology, finance (including insurance, stock market, and banking), machine-building, and energy. A special awards ceremony for recipients of the ‘Investor of the Year 2013’ was also held as part of the event’s programming.

УКРАЇНСЬКО-КАНАДСЬКИЙ ФОРУМ Протягом двох днів – 29 і 30 травня у Львові відбувся Українсько-канадський діловий форум, організований спільно зусиллями Львівської торгово-промислової палати, Львівської обласної державної адміністрації, Львівської міської ради, а також Канадсько-української торгової палати (CUCC) під егідою урядів провінцій Онтаріо і Саскачеван. Серед учасників форуму були, зокрема, посол Канади в Україні Трой Люляшник, президент CUCC Зенон Потічний, президент української торгово-промислової палати Геннадій Чижиков, мер Львова Андрій Садовий, а також представники регіональних торгово-промислових палат, державні посадовці з України та Канади, представники місцевої влади, а також експерти з різних питань. У рамках форуму були проведені зустрічі, переговори та круглі столи між українськими і канадськими підприємцями в галузі сільського господарства, інформаційних технологій, фінансів, страхування, фондового ринку, банківської справи, машинобудування та енергетики. The ‘Lord's of the Sound’ symphony orchestra was on full display at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre on May 26th. Directed by Vitaliy Sarazhynskyy, the orchestra consists of 26 talented young musicians that are currently touring Ukraine. The 2-hour ‘Kinohits’ concert program was a special treat for Leopolitan cinema fans, as the set list featured soundtracks from some of the world’s most popular films, including: The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, James Bond, and Star Wars. Even conductor Vitaliy Fizer and director Vitaliy Sarazhynskyy stayed in theme, repeatedly changing into costumes such as Darth Vader or Jack Sparrow, according to the music. One of the many highlights of the evening’s performances was a special appearance by ‘X-Factor’ finalist Daria Kovtun, who performed cover versions of iconic cinema ‘Skyfall’ (Adele from the latest James Bond hit). A very special and pleasant surprise for the audience in Lviv was music from the soundtrack of ‘With Fire & Sword’, a movie about Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s Cossack uprising aimed at reclaiming the control of the land from the hands of Polish nobles.

У Львівському театрі опери та балету 26 травня відбувся концерт симфонічного оркестру "Lord's of the Sound". Оркестр під керівництвом Віталія Саражинського складається з 26 молодих і талановитих музикантів, які, гастролюючи містами західної України, не оминули і Львів. За дві години концертної програми "Kinohits", слухачі змогли пригадати собі популярні мелодії з відомих фільмів, як от "Володар перстенів", "Самотній рейнджер", "Матриця", "Пірати Карибського моря», «Шерлок Холмс», «Гаррі Поттер», «Убити Білла», «Джеймс Бонд», «Зоряні війни» тощо. Під час концерту і диригент Віталій Фізер і режисер Віталій Саражинський перевтілювались відповідно до музики, з'являючись то в образі Дарта Вейдера, то Джека Горобця. Разом з оркестром виступила співачка Дарина Ковтун, фіналіст телешоу «Х- фактор», яка виконала знамениту пісню з фільму про Джеймса Бонда "Skyfall". Особливим і дуже приємним сюрпризом для Львівської публіки стало виконання мелодій з фільму "Вогнем і мечем" про події з українсько-польської історії часів Богдана Хмельницького.

ГРУЗИНСЬКИЙ ХОР У ЛЬВОВІ

The ‘Tbilisi’ Georgian National Male Choir performed their ‘With Love to Ukraine’ program at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre on June 4th as part of their promotional concert tour around the country. Tbilisi was created in 1980 and during their long and successful history have performed over 5000 concerts in Georgia and around the world. They have released 8 albums and a documentary entitled ‘Songs from Around the World’. The ensemble’s traditional repertoire features mainly Georgian folk songs and songs from Georgian composers, however as part of this concert tour, the ensemble added Ukrainian folk songs and songs based on the poetry of Taras Shevchenko. The concert was very warmly accepted by the audience in Lviv which gave the artists several standing ovations.

Концерт грузинського національного чоловічого хору «Тбілісі» з новою програмою "З любов'ю до України" у львівському театрі опери та балету відбувся 4 червня в рамках промо-туру по Україні. Хор «Тбілісі» був створений у 1980 році і відтоді успішно дав понад 5000 концертів як в Грузії, так і в багатьох інших країних світу; випустив 8 альбомів і документальний фільм під назвою "Пісні з усього світу". Традиційно до репертуару колективу входять грузинські народні пісні та пісні грузинських композиторів, однак спеціально для українського туру артисти додали до свого репертуару ще й українські народні пісні на вірші Т. Шевченка. Концерт був дуже тепло прийнятий львівською публікою, яка подякувала співакам бурхливими оваціями.

VELO DAY 2014 Lviv traditionally celebrates VeloDay (Bicycle Day) every May 31st. This year even the cold and rainy weather couldn’t diminish the number of cyclists that participated as event participation increased once again. As usual, Lviv Mayor Andriy Saovyi joined local cyclists in their ride around the city. VeloDay is organized by Leopolitan cyclists in an effort to promote healthy lifestyles and in support of the development of better cycling infrastructure in the city.

Lviv’s ‘Ladies-Only’ Bike Parade Lviv’s annual ‘Ladies Only’ bike parade was held in the city on June 7th. The parade aims to show that young women can look feminine, stylish, and elegant while riding a bicycle. This year, parade organizers encouraged the young women to introduce patriotic colours and symbols on the bike itself. The bikes were decorated beautifully with many accessories, including the traditional embroidered shirt (vyshyvanka) as clothing.

Основна мета заходу – показати всім, що на велосипеді можна їздити будь-куди: на вечірку, в театр або на роботу чи навчання і при цьому виглядати жіночно, стильно й елегантно. Цього року в дрес-коді параду були обов’язковими національні кольори і символіка на велосипеді та в його оздобленні і традиційна вишиванка на дівчатах.

homemade Liqueurs Competition A new competition for homemade fruit liqueurs was held in Lviv on June 8th. These popular alcoholic beverages – known to have their origins here in Galicia – were offered for guests to taste in the yard at the Museum of Ideas. The event was sponsored by the Galician Cuisine Club and the competition’s jury had the delectable chance to taste and evaluate fruit liqueurs from both amateur and professional makers. Prizes of 2500 UAH were awarded to the winners of two separate categories: sweet and savoury. In total, over 98 litres of fruit liqueurs were enjoyed throughout the competition.

Домашні наливки та лікери здавен надзвичайно популярні в Галичині, були виставлені для дегустації фахівцями у дворі Музею Ідей. Захід був організований і проведений силами учасників громадського об’єднання «Клуб Галицької кухні". Журі конкурсу мало чудову нагоду скуштувати і оцінити смак і аромат наливок, виготовлених аматорами саморобних напоїв, а також професіоналами. Настоянки оцінювались у двох категоріях: солодкі і пікантні. Переможець в кожній категорії отримав премію – 2500 грн. Загалом на конкурсі було продегустовано і оцінено понад 98 літрів наливок.

Кубок Націй "Данон"

The finals of the Danone Nations Cup – the largest and most prestigious football tournament for children aged 10–12 – was held on May 28th at Arena Lviv. The young players competed for the chance to represent Ukraine at the World Championships this fall in the football capital of the world – Brazil. The winning team gets to see their football dreams come true when they receive the cup from the hands of legendary football star Zinedine Zidane! Lviv’s School #73 defeated Broshniv in the dramatic 3rd-place match by a score of 2:0. The tournament final saw School #141 from Dnipropetrovsk down Sumy with an identical 2:0 score. Starting from November 16th, the youth from Dnipropetrovsk will be pitted against young footballers from 45 other countries. Lviv Today believes that 2014 will bring success and our boys will win the ultimate football prize in Brazil! Young Ukrainians have participated in the Danone Nations Cup for 12 years already. The greatest achievement during this period was an honourable 3rd-place finish from the Kremenchug team in 2000. Lviv’s School #73 finished a respectable 5th-place at the 2010 World Championships in South Africa.

Фінал Кубка Націй "Данон" – найамбітніший футбольний турнір для дітей віком від 10 до 12 років відбувся 28 травня на стадіоні "Арена Львів". Молоді гравці змагалися за право взяти участь у чемпіонаті світу в Бразилії. Цієї осені команда, яка виграє національні змагання, представлятиме Україну на міжнародному фіналі турніру. Мрії збуваються і, можливо, цього року наша команда отримає кубок з рук легендарного футболіста Зінедіна Зідана! Команда львівської школи № 73 у драматичному поєдинку за 3 місце перемогла команду з Брошнева з рахунком 2:0. Чемпіоном турніру стала команда школи № 141 (Дніпропетровськ), яка перемогла команду із Сум з рахунком – 2:0. Гравці з Дніпропетровська зустрінуться в поєдинках з іншими юними футболістами з 45 країн 13–16 листопада. Юні українці виступають у Кубку Націй «Данон» протягом майже 13 років. Найбільшим досягненням українських команд у цьому турнірі стало 3 місце команди з Кременчука у 2000 році. Команда львівської школи № 73 посіла 5-те місце в турнірі, який проходив у ПАР у 2010 році.

EUROFAN 2014

On June 8, in Lviv traditional international fan-festival for football supporters hold it’s final match. This year in the event took part 22 football fans’ teams from 17 countries – Czech Republic, Sweden, Slovakia, Moldova, Georgia, Slovenia, Belarus, Croatia, Northern Ireland, Poland, Romania, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland, Denmark and Ukraine. In the finals participated teams of Ukraine and Bulgaria and more ucky were Bulgarians, who won in the penalty shoot-outs. As third place winners came supporters of local FC “Karpaty”.

Цього року у міжнародному фестивалі футбольних уболівальників "Єврофан" взяли участь 22 команди з 17 країн Чехії, Швеції, Словаччини, Молдови, Грузії, Словенії, Білорусі, Хорватії, Північної Ірландії, Польщі, Румунії, Нідерландів, Болгарії, Фінляндії, Ірландії, Данії та України. У фінал вийшли команди з України і Болгарії. Вболівальники-футболісти з Болгарії стали чемпіонами турніру, здобувши перемогу в серії пенальті. На третьому місці - прихильники львівського ФК "Карпати".

Martial Arts Against Juvenile Delinquency

Бойові мистецтва проти дитячої злочинності

Lviv celebrated International Children’s Day on June 1st by hosting the traditional ‘Martial Arts Against Juvenile Delinquency & Drug Abuse’ Festival-Tournament. The event aims to popularize martial arts and sports activities as an alternative to street crime. Participants of the tournament participated in fights for the Champion’s Cup as well as some demonstration fights between fighters of various age categories. The event ended up bringing together over 200 boarding school students who attended the event as special guest spectators.

У Міжнародний день захисту дітей 1 червня у Львові відбувся традиційний фестиваль-турнір "Бойові мистецтва проти дитячої злочинності та зловживання наркотиками". Основною метою заходу стала популяризація спортивних заходів і бойових мистецтв, як найкращих способів для запобігання насильству серед дітей. У турнірі відбулися поєдинки за Кубок Чемпіонів, показові бої між учасниками різних вікових категорій. У заході взяли участь понад 200 учнів шкіл-інтернатів, які спостерігали за показами вправності їхніх ровесників зі спортивних секцій міста.

Lviv 2022: 5 Lessons from Minsk 2014 C

onsidering the political upheaval that has rocked the country – and this city’s Olympic bid – since early November, it is nothing short of remarkable that Lviv’s chances to host the 2022 Winter Olympics have actually increased. Currently there are only 4 bids remaining: Lviv and Oslo in Europe, and Almaty and Beijing in Asia. Oslo’s bid is on life-support as one of the governing parties has refused to give the financial guarantees that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) requires. In addition, with the 2018 Olympics already headed to Asia (PyeongChang, South Korea), the IOC will be hesitant to have back-to-back games on that continent. Especially if they have any illusion of retaining the participation of the NHL hockey professionals in what has become the Winter Games’ marquee event. Lviv’s bid too has suffered, as the bid has sat idle for months as the country gets its political house in order. But with so few candidates remaining (especially if Oslo is forced to withdraw), it is reasonable to think that the IOC will keep all remaining cities as ‘Candidate Cities’ following the committee meeting in July. If this is the case, Lviv 2022 will have one year to convince the IOC that it is indeed capable of hosting the event and that the IOC should host the games in Europe. I recently travelled to Minsk, Belarus to cover the 2014 IIHF World Hockey Championship and to see what lessons Lviv 2022 could learn from its neighbour. Here are 5 things Lviv 2022 could learn from Minsk: #1: The Lemburg/Lwow/Lvov/Lviv Games On nearly every piece of official material fans were told that ‘Minsk is one of the cleanest cities in the world’. And did they ever mean it. From workers cleaning up cigarette butts just seconds after a fan (always foreign) threw it on the floor to the distinct lack of graffiti anywhere in the city to their army of street sweepers to inebriated locals storing there trash until they could find a rubbish bin, every foreigner echoed the theme: ‘Minsk is the cleanest city I’ve been to’. It would be valuable for Lviv 2022 to come up with an idea they’d like fans to take home with them and theme the bid that way. They could play up Lviv’s coffeehouse heritage (the ‘Caffeinated Games’), or maybe the city’s multiethnic heritage (‘The Lemburg/Lwow/Lvov/ Lviv Games), or maybe they’d like to cast the city in its historic roots (‘The Medieval Games’) – whatever the idea is, the committee would do well to stick to it. #2 – If You Build It, Then Build It For the 2014 World Hockey Championships, Minsk refurbished one arena and built another from scratch. Both arenas were clean, modern, and finished. In fact, their wonderful new arena is considered to be among the finest in Europe. Moreover, and notably unlike Sochi, other construction that was set to be completed before the event, was actually finished. For example, the plan for Sochi was to have Europe’s newest amusement park open before the Olympics. When the time came, 2/3 of the park was unfinished and only 3 rides were operational. In Minsk, the city opened the newest waterpark in Eastern Europe days before the event began. It should be said that venue construction is the weak link in Lviv 2022’s Olympic bid. Nearly every venue needs to be constructed from scratch, and even those that

were supposed to have started already – namely the new arena set to hold matches for the 2015 FIBA European Basketball Championships – have been delayed due to the recent unrest. With many cities dropping out of the 2022 race due to the perceived cost of hosting the event (thanks to Putin’s $52 billion Sochi Games), Lviv 2022 needs to prove to the IOC that they have a handle on venue construction. Surely investment dollars from the West that will pour in following the signing of the EU Association Agreement will help. #3: If You Build It, They Will Come… The Belarussian people seemed genuinely surprised at the sheer number of visitors the tournament brought to Minsk. That being said, the size of that tournament pales in comparison to the number of visitors and athletes the Winter Olympics is sure to bring. Minsk did a fine job of having regular public transit running from venue to venue with plenty of multilingual volunteers around to assist foreign fans. Surely Lviv will need to improve its public transportation infrastructure –especially out to Arena Lviv (which is set to be the main Olympic site) – if Lviv 2022 has any hope of hosting. One notable mention from Minsk was that they built 4 FanZones: one at each venue, one outside the fan village (accommodations), and one in Central Minsk. This would be a great suggestion for Lviv 2022. Can you imagine the celebration at the FanZone on Prospekt Svoboda after Ukraine wins biathlon gold? #4: Little Things Matter When fans travel to a foreign country there are two things at the top of their minds: security and communication. Minsk should receive high marks for the latter. Along with the army of multilingual volunteers, the city had other touches too – like multilingual transit maps and a special ticket window at the train station especially for visiting fans. Lviv’s tourist infrastructure has greatly improved since hosting the EURO 2012 tournament and many young Ukrainians speak one or more European languages now, so likely the Lviv organizing committee has little to worry about regarding communication. The security in Minsk, however, was rather intrusive. Metal detectors, fullbody frisks, and thorough bag checks were encountered not once, but twice at each rink. With the recent unrest in this country, security will be top of mind when Lviv 2022 presents their case to the IOC in July. The committee will need a credible plan (that they can afford). #5: From Ukraine, With Love Why does a city bid for a major sporting event in the first place? A few reasons stand out: 1) to improve the city’s image; 2) to improve the city’s sporting and tourist infrastructure; and/or 3) to show the region to a legion of potential foreign tourists. Belarus had the right idea by eliminating visa requirements for fans that had purchased tickets. This allowed a great number of visitors to go to the country that might never had gone there for any other reason. Fans in Minsk were greatly impressed by the city and, in particular, the people of Minsk. Many have expressed their desire or intention to return. Lviv has a great opportunity to develop several world-class facilities – both in the city and in the nearby Carpathian Mountains. А краєвид, що відкривається з вікон нашого ресторану, який розташований на 7-му поверсі є взагалі унікальним, і часто використовується для промоції Львова українськими та зарубіжними телеканалами. Історичний центр Львова – створює і типові для старих європейських міст проблеми, наприклад, брак місць для паркування. Як вам вдається поєднувати комфорт для гостей із суворими вимогами збереження історичної спадщини? Справді, «PANORAMA Lviv Hotel» є класичним готелем середмістя давніх європейських міст, який гармонійно вписується у навколишню архітектуру та входить до історичного ансамблю старого Львова та всесвітньої спадщини Юнеско. Також, безпосередньо в готелі, гості мають можливість скористатися послугами туристичного бюро (замовити квитки на потяг чи літак, екскурсію та ін.), салону краси та масажиста, до послуг проживаючих є і тренажерний зал. Знаємо, що до Євро-2012 та й після нього, у Львові було відкрито багато

готелів різних категорій, як вам працюється в умовах такої конкуренції? І справді, за останні 4 роки у Львові посилилася конкуренція в готельній сфері, до того ж в усіх категоріях, але тут потрібно виходити з власних переваг. Зручне розташування, комфортний доїзд, паркомісця під відеонаглядом, традиційно бездоганний сервіс та гнучкі ціни і є нашими перевагами. Враховуючи останні події на сході Україні чи не зменшиться, на вашу думку, потік туристів до Львова? Звичайно, деяке зменшення туристів відчутне, особливо з Росії. Але будемо сподіватися, що сезон, який тільки розпочався і який є найбільш сприятливим періодом для туристів, принесе збільшення кількості бажаючих відвідати наше чудове місто. Львів був, є і буде туристичною столицею України, яка тільки зараз почала по-справжньому відкриватися для світу. EBA MEETING WITH LVIV MAYOR On May 21, the EBA held a meeting with Andriy Sadovyi, the Mayor of Lviv, in the format of open and informal discussion. In particular, Mr. Sadovyi shared his main priorities in work and his life principles, as well as telling some funny stories and giving valuable advices to the audience. Andriy explained that the key to Lviv’s success is the people who live in the city. He emphasized that it is very important to have a

great team of professionals in any type of work and especially in management and politics. All the participants had an opportunity to ask Mr. Sadovyi questions. The meeting had a really warm atmosphere. On behalf of EBA members, we would like to express our gratitude to Andriy Sadovyi for his presence, his time and his attention!

EBA Special Meeting On Wednesday, May 14, the EBA Special Meeting with traveling Vedic monk Swami BV Nemi was held at EBA office in Lviv. The participants of the meeting have found out about leadership from the Vedic perspective and learned who leaders of leaders are. The “Leaders of Leaders” program is a systematic approach, which applies timeless Vedic principles in order to facilitate the establishment of positive projects network, to help people find real happiness and to introduce positive principles of peace and unity in society. Also Swami Nemi has been talking about personal potential inherent in each of us, talents bestowed upon us, and why their disclosure and use makes people happy. Practical test of talents revelation has been held with this purpose. The main idea of the meeting which Nemi Swami has tried to convey is that business based on values and spirituality is more profitable and sustainable.

Swami BV Nemi is extremely loving, creative, inspirational, wise and caring. He treats Slavonic people in the special way: appreciates our openness, love of freedom and goodwill. He likes traveling all over Ukraine. He was born on November 12, 1943 in England. Graduated from the University of Oxford and the University of London, became scientific researcher. In a while, giving up his scientific research, he moved to Japan where he was a monk at the Zen Buddhist monastery. He would soon enough become frustrated by Zen Buddhism and would continue his spiritual pursuit. Since then, he has been practicing bhakti-yoga for over 30 years. For many years he has been working on the development of the idea of science and spirituality combination while collaborating with various representatives of progressive Western scientific realms.

EBA Events EBA Tax and Accounting Committee Participants of the meeting gathered to discuss possible changes in Ukrainian tax system of post-regulatory period with Denys Shmyhal, Deputy Head of Main Department of Ministry of Revenue and Duties of Ukraine in Lviv oblast, and to suggest proposals for solving tax administration issues. Opening the meeting, Denys Shmyhal informed the participants about the establishment of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine which is going to tackle taxation and customs policies issues. He said: “There will be no division of Ministry of Revenue and Duties of Ukraine. What is being considered at the moment is the establishment of the financial intelligence, its status and subordination. Denys Shmyhal described the work of the Ministry for the past two months as follows: “We had to choose: either to work or to promote ourselves. We’ve chosen the former.” To illustrate it, the Deputy Head mentioned the draft law on tax compromise application which had been prepared by the Ministry. Due to it, the so-called “tax loopholes” would be of no use for the companies. Instead of using them, the latter ones would only have to pay 15% of their obligations. That would prevent them from engaging into fraudulent activities. Complexity of tax invoices registration procedure, submission of additional documents with the electronic records package, appeal against tax decisions were among the issues mentioned by Association members. Denys Shmyhal promised to pass all comments and suggestions to the Ministry management. He also said: “Desk officials cannot understand all business problems. That is why I am ready to have meetings with you at least once a week to listen to your problems and to solve them effectively.”

EBA WORKSHOP On Wednesday, May 28, Andriy Kucherenko’s workshop on creativity in business was held at the EBA office in Lviv. Andriy Kucherenko carried out his workshop as the interaction with the participants of the meeting. During it Mr. Kucherenko lively described creativity in business. Creativity is often related to art, i.e. music, painting and literature. From the business perspective, creativity is the way of thinking which can be applied while finding solutions to issues and unique improvements of, for instance, products or services quality. In business creativity is defined as the ability to complete tasks and overcome challenges. In this way, businessperson acts as a creator and logically business becomes a tool for idea implementation. Creativity is inherent in every person since his/her birth. However, significant loss of creativity happens in the process of development and maturation. Subordination to social norms and rules restrains the development of creative activity. It is argued that one should not be afraid of being different. One should advocate his or her original ideas and constantly improve them. One should also open his or her mind, set his or her fantasies, dreams and desires free. Andriy Kucherenko is a business coach, consultant, psychologist and a certified MCNLP trainer. He has impressive experience in conducting of business trainings and workshops. n this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: Draft law on e-commerce – new platform for business development. The Ukrainian parliament has passed draft law No. 2306a defining the legal grounds for concluding and executing electronic deals. The bill defines the organization and legal grounds for carrying out e-commerce in Ukraine and regulates relations during the signing and execution of deals in the electronic form using IT systems. Currently, there is no specific law in Ukraine regulating relationships between market participants in the area of e-commerce. Electronic commerce is the conduct of business through the use of automation and electronic media, in lieu of paper transactions, direct personal contact, telephone, or other means. It includes activities such as procurement, order entry, transaction processing, payment, authentication and nonrepudiation, inventory control, order fulfillment, and customer support. For grants and cooperative agreements, electronic commerce can include the use of electronic data interchange, electronic mail, electronic bulletin board systems, and electronic funds transfer for: program announcements or solicitations; applications or proposals; award documents; recipients' requests for payment; payment authorizations. Verkhovna Rada passed a bill No. 2306a in the first reading, which is aimed to define the organizational and legal framework for the implementation of e-commerce in Ukraine, to establish clear legal requirements and mechanisms for remote transactions with the use of electronic information and communication tools and technologies. The draft law stipulates the general principles of e-commerce in Ukraine, the subjects of e-commerce and their legal status, additional legal protection of consumers in electronic commerce. Apart from introducing new terms such as e-commerce, electronic goods, electronic trade, online store, electronic transactions, the draft law regulates the following issues: procedure of conclusion of e-commerce transactions, conditions, form, mandatory information that must be provided to consumers before the deal, payments, rules on the protection of personal data and on the storage of electronic documents, time and place of dispatch and receipt of electronic messages (document). Moreover, it establishes the rules for resolving disputes and liability in the area of e-commerce. Adoption of this law will foster the integration of economic and legal institutions of Ukraine into European economic and legal environment. According to the authors the bill complies with the principles of European legislation on electronic commerce. Besides online shopping will gain many advantages by easier cooperation with the tax authorities and the government, consequently this will lead to better conditions for the ordinary buyers.
