Now, As Always: Lviv Continues to be
Ukraine’s CULTURAL Capital A
s the city celebrated its 759th anniversary last month, the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” came to mind. Lviv has long been considered the cultural capital of Ukraine; indeed, it’s the reason this magazine took the tagline “The Heart of Europe, The Soul of Ukraine”. With regular art exhibitions, musical concerts, cultural festivals, sporting events, and fashion shows, it’s not hard to see how Lviv has earned this enviable reputation. As much as the city is currently thriving as a cultural heartland, it is not a new phenomenon in the city. Festivals such as City Day or Batyar Day remind us of Lviv’s rich heritage. In fact, it seems that in any cultural sphere – be it music, sport, fashion, festivals, or forums – what happens right now is just a modern-day reminder of what has always happened here. It’s what makes Lviv such a wonderful place to live or visit! With the energy and exuberance that the summer season brings, not to mention a multitude of different cultural events, this month we highlight not just what lies ahead on Lviv’s cultural landscape, but what brought the city here in the first place. From Austro-Hungarian operettas to the king of modern Ukrainian music, Lviv has always been a musical hotbed. Go back in time to Austro-Hungarian Lviv with Lviv’s own K&K Philharmoniker as they perform Carmina Burana at the city’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre. Or check into interwar Lviv with the Veselovsky Festival dedicated to the “Father of Ukrainian pop music” – Lviv’s own Bogdan Veselovsky.
If modern music is more your fancy, check out the iconic TABULA RASA at Picasso nightclub or one of the hottest band’s in the country right now – Hardkiss. Sports fans can look forward to catching our national football team continue their road to the EUROs 2016 in France when the city’s sparkling Arena Lviv plays host to Luxembourg. Of course, Lviv has long been a home for major sporting events and this month’s Leopolitan Grand Prix is a reminder of that. Long ago one of the premiere road races in Europe, the event is now more of a celebration of retro cars, and is set to take over Central Lviv this month. Last month the city played tribute to the fashion of the Batyars with the first-ever “Batyars on Bicycles” retro bike race. This month the fashion scene turns toward Lviv’s lovely ladies as the city gets set to crown Miss Lviv. The current Miss Ukraine – Lviv’s own Andriana Khasanshin – will be on hand to crown the winner. Last month the city celebrated its 759th anniversary with a cheery festival and this month festival fans can choose from one of three cinematic festivals: WizArt features world class short films; KinoFest is a children’s film extravaganza; and AdEaters highlights the best in global advertising. There’s new and old even in our business events – last month the city celebrated the 300th anniversary of our beloved Lvivske beer. This month the city plays host to the largest E-Commerce forum in Western Ukraine. Of course, one Lviv tradition hasn’t changed in all these centuries – people watching over a warm coffee or cold beer on one of the city’s charming outdoor or rooftop terraces. This Month In Lviv 2015 Leopolis Grand Prix June 12-14. along Svoboda Ave. and the triangle between Vitovskoho St., Stryiska St. and Hvardiyska St. The 2015 Leopolis Grand Prix – an International Festival of Classic Cars – will return to Lviv from June 12th – 14th. Lviv has a long history with motorized sport, including hosting a Grand Prix in 1930 – just one year after the very first Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. Due to the shape of the track that was used, it has taken on the moniker of the “Lviv Triangle” – and a similar route will be followed this year: from Vitovskoho St. to Styiska St. to Hvardiyska St. The 1930 track featured several unusual obstacles, including: the tram tracks on the major part of the road; the cobblestone-paved road; and varying altitudes, including the ascent on Stryiska

St. and the descent on Hvardiyska St. Taken together, this made the Leopolitan track one of the most complicated of its time. This, in turn, drew some of the most famous racecar drivers of the time, such as: Germany’s Hans Stuck and Rudolpf Caracciola; France’s Pierre Veyron; Italy’s Maximilian Hardegg and Hans Tschaikoff; Austria’s Bruno Sojko; and, of course, Czechoslovakia’s Jan Kubiček. The Leopolis Grand Prix included not only the car race around the Lviv Triangle, but also the historic rally race just outside the city. This year’s festival offers Leopolitan race fans and guests of the city several car-related activities,

2015 Леополіс Гран-прі 12-14 червня. Проспект Свободи, вул. Вітовського, Стрийська, Гвардійська Міжнародний фестиваль класичних автомобілів Леополіс Гран-прі 2015 повернеться до Львова 12-14 червня. Такі змагання були проведені у Львові вперше у 1930 році – через рік після першого Гран-прі Монако в Монте-Карло. Завдяки формі траси, яка буде відтворена і цього року, перегони отримали назву "Львівський трикутник", вздовж якого львів’яни вітатимуть учасників змагань. Свого часу, у 1930 році, траса вважалась однією з найскладніших – вона мала крутий підйом і спуск по бруківці, круті

повороти і додаткові перешкоди у вигляді трамвайних колій, і за цими показниками могла конкурувати з ралі Монте Карло. Тож не дивно, що у львівських перегонах виступили деякі з найвідоміших автомобілістів того часу, як от Ханс Штук і Рудольф Карачйола з Німеччини, П'єр Вейрон з Франції, Максиміліан Хардегг і Ганс Чайкофф з Італії, Бруно Сойко з Австрії і, звичайно ж, знаменитий Ян Кубічек з Чехословаччини. До програми Леополіс Гран-прі увійдуть не тільки перегони вулицями міста, а й ралі заміськими дорогами. У програмі фестивалю також намічено багато різноманітних культурних акцій та конкурсів, дитяче автомобільне свято, екскурсійно-навігаційний квест, семінари для журналістів спеціалізованих автомобільних видань. May 30th marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bogdan Veselovsky, fondly remembered as the “Father of Ukrainian pop music”. Born in Vienna in 1915, Veselovsky spent several years in Lviv where he launched the era of “Ukrainian Lviv or retro” music, including the first Ukrainian jazz music – known as Yabtso Jazz – in 1931. His rich musical heritage, which spans more than 130 songs and 30 LPs, is notable for being the first to use Ukrainian language in the dance music genre. His music was actively removed from the Ukrainian cultural landscape as the Soviet authorities deemed it to have an “adverse bourgeois impact”. This led Veselovsky to spend the final 22 years of his life as a composer in Canada, where he headed the Ukrainian section of Canadian radio. To mark this important anniversary, the International Festival of Bogdan Veselovsky aims to revive Ukrainian retro music, especially Ukrainian pop music between 1930-1950. Events are scheduled to take place in Lviv, Stryi, and Kyiv. The festival’s programme offers several retro concerts, as well as an international competition for covers of Veselovsky’s hits. The jury chairman for the song contest is none other than outstanding Ukrainian singer Vladimir Lutsiv (London, UK), who knew Veselovsky personally and collaborated with the musical icon. The festival opens in Stryi on May 30th with the premiere of the documentary “Bondi or Return Bogdan Veselovsky” and a concert featuring the works of the honoured singer. The song competition will take place in Lviv on May 31st at Lviv’s Vienna Terrace Art Club and will see international singers perform their own covers of Veselovsky’s biggest hits. Gala concerts are set to be held at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (June 1st) and Kyiv’s Operetta Theatre (June 3rd) as well. The concert in Lviv will see popular contemporary Ukrainian group ShockolaD perform their own unique interpretation of Veselovsky’s trademark Ukrainian Lviv-style music. Народився композитор у Відні 1915 року, навчався у Львівському університеті та Вищому музичному інституті ім. М. Лисенка, разом з А. Кос-Анатольським у 1931 році створив "Джаз-капелу Яблонського", яка мала надзвичайний успіх серед української громади. Його багата музична спадщина, яка охоплює понад 130 пісень і 30 платівок, особлива тим, що він першим став використовувати українську мову в танцювальній музиці. На жаль, у повоєнній Україні його музика потрапила під заборону, як така, що могла мати "негативний буржуазний вплив". Останні 22 роки свого життя Б. Веселовський провів у Канаді, займаючись музичною діяльністю, де він очолював український відділ канадського радіо. Відзначаючи цю важливу річницю, Міжнародний фестиваль Богдана Веселовського прагне відродити українську легку музику, особливо періоду 1930-1950 рр. Заходи планується провести у Львові, Стрию і Києві. Програма фестивалю пропонує кілька ретро-концертів, а також міжнародний конкурс виконавців пісень Веселовського. Головою журі пісенного конкурсу обрано видатного українського співака Володимира Луціва з Лондона, який особисто знав Веселовського і співпрацював з ним. Відкриття фестивалю відбудеться у Стрию 30 травня прем'єрою документального фільму "Бонді або повернення Богдана Веселовського" і концертом з його творів. Пісенний конкурс пройде у Львові 31 травня у Арт клубі "Віденська Тераса". Гала-концерти відбудуться у львівському оперному театрі 1 червня та в київському театрі оперети 3 червня. На концерті у Львові виступить, зокрема, гурт ShockolaD з власною унікальною інтерпретацією шлягерів Б. Веселовського. Children’s KinoFest 2015 May 28th – June 7th, Lviv Art Palace (17, Kopernyka St.) The Children’s KinoFest is an annual international festival of films aimed at children and teenagers. In its second year, the festival will take place in 12 Ukrainian cities, including in Lviv from May 28th to June 7th. Festival organizers decided to launch a Ukrainian version of the event after seeing the success of such festivals in France (Mon Premier Festival), the Netherlands (Cinekid), and the Czech Republic (Zlin Film Festival). The festival program offers competitions in several areas: feature films for viewers 10 and older; short films for viewers 3 to 10 years of age; a retrospective dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the great Buster Keaton’s birthday; and an interactive museum of optical amusements for kids and grownups. For four days this May, Lviv will host one of the city’s biggest annual alternative cinema celebrations when the Wiz-Art International Short Film Festival returns to the city. Each year the festival features more than 100 new short films, making Wiz-Art a powerful cultural and educational platform that unites Ukrainian and foreign filmmakers and introduces them to the Ukrainian audience. The festival tends to attract a wide Leopolitan audience, as well as a host of international guests and participants, to enjoy a wide range of world-famous short films. An international jury will choose the top films in a number of different categories, including: Grand Prix; Best Director;
Best Script; Best Cinematography; and Best Ukrainian Film. The jury will also select winner in the areas of fiction, animation, and experimental film. The jury this year consists of: Katarzyna Gondek, graduate of film and documentary studies at Wajda School and author of Films’ Literary Forms; Oleksandr Ratiy, winner of the Grand Prix at the 43rd Molodist Festival for the film The Road Back Home; and Christoph Schwarz, graduate of the Vienna University of Applied Arts, Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, and conceptual art studio of Jiri David. Lviv Media Forum May 28-30 @ Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) With its focus on ”Media in the Turbulent Times of Change”, the Lviv Media Forum will emphasize the role of media in crisis events in Ukraine and abroad. Carl Orff’s Iconic “Carmina Burana”

The wonderful K&K Philharmoniker, a joint Ukrainian-Austrian symphony orchestra, will perform some of the greatest classical compositions alongside the K&K Opernchor for Leopolitans and guests of the city at Lviv’s picturesque Philharmonic Hall on May 21st. The program sees the orchestra and choir cover some of the iconic Carl Orff’s scenic cantata “Carmina Burana”, as well as several revered works by Matthias Georg Kendlinger. The orchestra is pleased to welcome the esteemed Kendlinger to conduct at the event. Created in summer 2002, the K&K Philharmoniker is a group of 70 musicians that perform over 100 concerts a year at concert halls across Europe, including at such vaunted buildings as: Munich’s Herkulessaal Residenz; Zurich’s Tonhalle; and Berlin’s Konzerthaus. The orchestra has released 19 CDs of their live concerts, as well as three concert DVDs. Established in 2003, the K&K Opernchor was formed from the original Lviv Chamber Choir led by director Vasyl Yatsyniak. A student of Moscow’s famed Vladimir Minin, Yatsyniak has led the vocal ensemble from the very beginning. Lviv’s hopping Picasso nightclub is pleased to host TABULA RASA – a Ukrainian rock band formed in 1989 – for a special 25th anniversary concert on May 22nd. While the concert recognizes the 25th anniversary of the group, only two members from the original lineup remain: vocalist Oleg Laponogov and drummer Eduard Kosse. In the band’s heyday back in the 1990s, TABULA RASA was a regular participant at music festivals, winner of several awards, and regularly featured on MTV. The band features only live sound, as well as the recognizable vocals of charismatic frontman Laponogov. Last year the band released its 10th album – Drawings on the Floor – which features several musical genres, including: rock, dance, and lyrical compositions. The band is sure to present concertgoers at Picasso to a rich mixture of both old hits and new compositions. Currently the band is working on their 11th album and plan to premiere some of their new tracks here in Lviv! Dakh Daughters Back in Lviv! June 15th, 19:00 at Maria Zankovetska Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) The always intriguing Ukrainian indie band Dakh Daughters are bringing their “Ooooops! It’s summer!” show to Lviv’s Maria Zankovetska Drama Theatre on June 15th. Created in late 2012 in Kyiv’s DAKH Theatre, the Dakh Daughters are a band of female artists who picked up musical instruments in order to celebrate love, freedom, and beauty. Members of the band find themselves in that ephemeral space between song and theatrics – that is, the territory of pure experiment. The Dakh Daughters conjure up an atmosphere of a French salon, where Mireille Mathieu meets Marilyn Manson. From time to time the girls might shake up the audience with one of their “Laibach” growls, but can also soften them up by turning into frivolous Hollywood heroines straight out of the 1950s. Their songs are based on classical Ukrainian poetry, texts from Nobel Prize laureates, popular songs from the present and past, or even compositions of their own authorship. The girls achieved stardom primarily after publishing their video for the song “Rozy/Donbass” that contains Shakespeare’s Sonnet 35 and Ukrainian folk songs. Another one of their most popular performances is a clip of their live performance on Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti during the early EuroMaidan protests in December 2013. Cold Altair by HARDKISS May 23rd, 20:00 at KINO Event Hall (2 Chornovola Ave.) Lviv’s hip KINO Event Hall is proud to present The HARDKISS, a Ukrainian progressive pop group that showcases a unique look and sound at every concert. The group was founded in 2011 by Valery Bebko – a two-time winner of the YUNA Musical Awards (Discovery of the Year & Best Video in 2012) – and lead singer Yulia Sanina. By 2013, the group had become the “voice and face” of PEPSI Ukraine and also a YUNA nominee for Best Group. UEFA 2016: Ukraine to Host Luxembourg June 16th @ Arena Lviv (199 Stryjska St.) Lviv will once again host our national football team as Ukraine welcomes lowly Luxembourg to the friendly confines of Arena Lviv on June 16th for a Group C qualifying match for the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament in France. After falling 0:1 away to high-flying Spain in March, Ukraine looks to right their qualification fortunes with a victory over last-place Luxembourg here in Lviv. The match looks good on paper for the boys in blue and yellow – Luxembourg has only one draw after five matches to sit last in the six-team Group C, while Ukraine currently finds itself in 3rd place after losses

to Slovakia and Spain. Moreover, Ukraine has yet to lose a single match at Arena Lviv and has scored 13 goals while conceding just twice over 5 contests at the new stadium. In their last turn out, the squad squandered a 1-0 lead on the final kick of the game in a March friendly with Latvia. Veteran Ukrainian national and former FC Karpaty star defender, Artem Fedetskyi, will be forced to watch from the sidelines after picking up his third yellow card of the competition in the tilt with Spain. Dynamo Kyiv forward Andriy Yarmolenko currently leads the group in scoring along with Spain’s Paco Alcacer with 3 goals a piece.

Стрийська, 199) Українська футбольна збірна знову виступить на львівському стадіоні "Арена Львів" 16 червня у відбірковому матчі групи С чемпіонату Євро-2016 проти збірної Люксембургу. Після програшу 0:1 збірній Іспанії у березні наші футболісти мають шанс виправити ситуацію за рахунок команди Люксембургу, що займає останнє місце в групі. Усе складається на користь наших – команда Люксембургу має тільки одну нічию після п'яти матчів, а збірна України займає 3 місце, програвши командам Словаччини та Іспанії. До того ж, українські футболісти ще не програли жодного

Terrace Tour Just as surely as trees and flowers blossoming, eggs being intricately decorated for Easter, and Leopolitans being freed from the constraining bonds of their winter parkas, a sure sign of spring in Lviv is the glorious opening of the city’s myriad, magical patios. Dotting the cobblestone streets of Lviv’s city centre like pawns on a chess board, the opening of the patios – or summer terraces as they’re known as here – is a sure sign that summer is just around the corner. With virtually every business in the downtown core offering some sort of sidewalk sanctuary, it can be difficult to decide where to spend your hard-earned money and leisure time. So Lviv Today has put together this guide – a walking terrace tour that will

take you through some of the city’s most stunning scenery and sumptuous bistros. First let it be said that while some cities have places you need to see, Lviv has places you need to be. So many places, in fact, that any list of favourites or recommendations is bound to overlook some mighty fine locales. EXPLORING LVIV Vakharchuk. Besides a very cool tour through the underground coffee mine and a wonderful little shop that will satiate any of your coffeerelated needs, the patio is one of the hippest places in Lviv’s city centre. Located right in the middle of the building, this trendy, little nook was recently given a covering, making it an ideal place for one of those warm, rainy Leopolitan afternoons. There is no smoking here, so it also makes it a nice place for those averse to the habit. Next on our list is a place much more notable for its inside atmosphere than its outdoor terrace. But no Lviv experience is complete without a visit to Kryivka (Hideout). One of the most visited restaurants in all of Europe, you’re likely to have to wait in line to get inside (to get outside), but it is well worth the wait. The place is themed after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and your table is sure to be checked for “Russian sympathisers” by one of the locale’s costumed actors, which has obviously taken on an entirely new meaning over the last year. You should also check out Lviv’s Italian Courtyard Café. One of the most romantic places in the city, the courtyard frequently offers live music and theatrical performances. You may want to try “Grandma’s Recipe”, a tasty specialty of vodka, cinnamon, and apple juice found at the café.

Head just west of the square towards Hotel Leopolis to discover the quiet Stefan Yavorsky Square. There are a few patios located right next to each other, but we recommend Try Mitly (Three Broomsticks) – the Harry Potter-themed venue. Fans

of the book and film series will love the interior, where you can don robes and wands for photos, but the outdoor terrace, located right in front of the 17th-Century, early baroque Jesuit Church, is one of the more relaxing spots for a coffee or a cold one. They also offer some of the tastiest appetizers in the city, including the mashed potato fries and the cheese log. Nearby, in Katedralna Square, you’ll find the cozy Café One. Located near Lviv’s oft-photographed “kissing sign”, it rests in a secluded spot that has long been a favourite haunt for locals. Their fine selection of European fare is highlighted by a range of French and Italian wines. On the other side of Ploshcha Rynok, along Virmenska St., you’ll find the patio next to Dzyga. Dzyga has been the heart of Lviv’s artistic scene for well over a decade and offers an ever-changing art gallery inside and one of the coolest outdoor terraces in Lviv. As sponsor of several Leopolitan artistic festivals each year, including the popular Lviv Jazz Fest, it wouldn’t be surprising to run into a local (or even national) celebrity while sipping on some of Lviv’s tastiest coffee. One popular specialty, especially in darker hours, is their flaming coffee. Of course you’ll also want to check out Lviv’s first brew pub, Kumpel. Located near Lviv’s medieval Arsenal fortress, this is still a popular stop for thirsty locals. While there are plenty of other microbreweries in the city now, Kumpel is still known for its dark, light, and red brews that have become a staple of Lviv’s pub life. On the other side of the square you’ll find two restaurants that offer a little peace and quiet from the busy crowds in Lviv’s central square. Chleb i Wino (Bread and Wine) offers visitors the unique atmosphere of an authentic 19th-Century Lviv Tavern, replete with uniformed trumpeter and a candlelit boutique interior designed to pay tribute to a more aristocratic time. The elegant terrace is located directly inside the crumbling walls of the old fortress. Not far away, you’ll find the regal Royal Brewery. Situated right in the heart of the old city, its outdoor terrace is located in a courtyard away from the street, allowing for a more

relaxing atmosphere. Of course, the Gothic-style fountains and statues of goddesses only add to the ambiance. Relax near their burning fire while enjoying one of their exclusive, locally-brewed beers. Of course, no tour of city centre would be complete without visiting two of Lviv’s most iconic restaurants – Dim Lehenda (The House of Legends) and Gazova Lampa (Gas Lamp). Dim Lehenda is one of the most popular places in the city. The eccentricity of this eclectic eatery begins as you are greeted by a chimneysweep at the door, continues through seven wildly varying themed floors, and continues right up to the antique car that sits on its rooftop patio. The views from the patio are stunning – part of the reason for its popularity – so be sure to make reservations if you want to find a table. Gazova Lampa provides another wonderful rooftop terrace and one of the largest collections of gas lamps in Europe to boot. This makes sense, seeing as though Lviv brought the world the handy lantern in the mid-19th-Century. Follow your vintage-dressed guide to the roof for one of the best views of the entire city.
The Prospekt Svoboda Tour Highlights: Livyy Bereh (28 Svoboda Ave.), Panorama Hotel & Restaurant (45 Svoboda Ave.), Wien Hotel (12 Svoboda Ave.), Gloria Café (1 Mickiewicza Square), Dublin Irish Pub (5 Kryva Lypa Passage), Play Bar (6 Kryva Lypa Passage) Another major tourist draw is Prospekt Svoboda and Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre situated at the end of the promenade. Both a major thoroughfare as well as a place to be seen, this is where many of the city’s most influential protests occurred, including for independence and during the Orange Revolution and EuroMaidan. You’ll need to have a drink on the Livyy Bereh (Left Bank) terrace located on either side of the fountain in front of the Opera House. From here you can watch as lovestruck young men wait patiently to present flowers to their doting sweethearts, enjoy children boogeying around the square in one of a dozen miniature vehicles, or join the locals in cooling off in the fountain. There may be no better people-watching patio in the entire city! Unless, of course, you prefer the bird’s-eye view; in which case head across the street to the Panorama Hotel’s rooftop patio. From the 7th-floor terrace, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the entire promenade, and it is well worth the price of a coffee. From here, head on down the boulevard towards the Wien Hotel (Vienna Hotel) located behind the Shevchenko monument. Feel free to challenge one of the seniors on the walkway’s benches to a game of chess – a proud Leopolitan tradition. Then cool off on the hotel’s patio. Evenings see the patio behind you turn into one of Lviv’s hottest nightclubs, Fashion Club. The last must-see spot on the Prospekt is Gloria Café, located beside Hotel George. Considered to be the finest coffeehouse in the city, the café regularly wins competitions for its coffees. The relaxing atmosphere draws some of the city’s most influential movers-and-shakers, as well as some of its most beautiful. No patio tour is complete without a visit to Gloria. For the final stop on the tour, head on over to the difficult-to-spot Kryva Lypa Passage. Located just off Prospekt Svoboda between Petra Doroshenka and Sichovykh Strilitsiv Streets, the five-minute walk will bring you to a wonderful alley oasis. This backstreet pedestrian promenade features several interesting places to visit, including the always popular Dublin’s Irish Pub and the upscale, trendy Play Bar. Dublin’s offers your standard Irish pub fare, complete with Guinness and Harp on draught, and one of the largest patios in the city. Play Bar is a café by day and thumping night club by night. Featuring a fine array of Western dishes, you’re likely to meet some of the city’s most welldressed and attractive young lads and lasses. To mark Lviv’s “City Day” on May 1st, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and the Lviv City Council welcomed some talented Leopolitans to bestow on them special titles and awards. Okean Elzy frontman and native Leopolitan Svyatoslav Vakarchuk was awarded the title Honourary Citizen of the City, while Women’s World Chess Champion Mariya Muzychuk was awarded the title of Leopolitan of the Year. Other prominent Leopolitans were also recognized: Mariya’s sister Anna Muzychuk was honoured with the Olena Steanivna Award; Ukrainian Catholic University Vice-Rector and President of Religion and Society, Myroslav Marynovych was decorated with the Lion’s Order; Andriy Salyuk, the President of the Lviv Foundation for the Preservation of Architectural and Historical Monuments was bestowed with the Golden Coat of the Arms of Lviv; and members of the Ilnytsky family received the title of Noble Leopolitan family. Congratulations to all of these talented individuals!

Lviv and “Lvivske” – 300 steps of holiday! This year, our ancient city celebrated its 759th anniversary, and this glorious event overlapped with another truly exceptional anniversary – Lvivske brewery is celebrating its 300th anniversary! Ukraine’s “pershe pivo” (first beer) kindly invited Leopolitans and guests of the city to join the festivities to mark the occasion with their “300 Steps of Holiday” event, where visitors were taken back in time to travel through the ancient city’s streets – from medieval centuries right up until today. It took participants approximately 300 steps to complete this entertaining educational journey that highlighted both the history of this great city as well as its honoured brewery. Guests of the party had the unique opportunity to learn more about the monks, who according to legend, founded the Lvivske brewery some 300 years ago. Visitors also had chance to participate in a Batyar dance workshop and to try to do their best impression of an 18th-19th centuries craftsman by making their own Lviv City Day 2015 souvenir. Maybe the most popular attraction was the special “wish board” area, where guests could write special greetings and words of congratulations to their beloved city. Also, to mark this remarkable 300th anniversary, brand Lvivske presented all the beer lovers with delicious “Lvivske 1715” beer in innovative glass bottles, decorated with especially designed spectacular image in relief of city’s symbol – Lion!

Щоб пройти святковим розважально-історичним маршрутом пересічному гостю знадобилося зробити у середньому 300 кроків, кожен з яких став маленькою віхою у спільній історії Львова та Львівської броварні. Наприклад, можна було познайомитися з ченцями, які за легендою заснували стародавню Львівську пивоварню 300 років тому або спробувати свої сили та показати себе під час майстер-класу з батярських танців, а також відчути себе справжнім ремісником XVIII-XIX століття та власноруч виготовити собі сувенір на пам’ять про День міста 2015 року. Batyar Day To mark Lviv’s “City Day”, many Leopolitans chose to dive into the style and atmosphere of the Batyar’s and took part in the city’s first ever retro bike ride – Batyars on Bicycles. Participants cycled by the city’s most iconic landmarks and took a short “tea time” for a picnic at the park. Batyar Day festivities were held from May 1-3 and showcased the essence of the Batyars’ world – lots of jokes and fun, concerts from local bands, entertaining competitions, and even Batyars song and dance workshops! Tasty drinks and refreshments near city centre made for an enjoyable and memorable experience for all those in attendance.
День батяра Невідомо, чи справжні львівські батяри їздили на роверах, але їх далекі нащадки у 21 столітті вирішили відзначити "День міста" 1-3 травня, одягнувшись у відповідному ретро-стилі й проїхавшись вулицями міста на двоколісних машинах. Учасники велопробігу робили зупинки біля визначних пам’яток Львова а також провели невеличкий пікнік у парку. Загалом День батяра пройшов як належить – багато жартів і веселощів, концерти місцевих музичних гуртів, веселі конкурси і, навіть, майстеркласи батярських пісень і танців! Атмосферу свята гармонійно доповнював широкий вибір напоїв та закусок у кнайпах в центрі міста, де все було зроблено для приємного і незабутнього відпочинку львів’ян та гостей міста.

The inner courtyard of Lviv City Council in the centre of Rynok Square played home to the Flugery Lvova International Jazz & Folk Music Festival from May 1-4. Held annually since 2003, the festival has become a Leopolitan trademark as it serves as a launchpad for amateur artists and a popular stage for more established acts. This year’s program attracted 17 bands from as far away as Canada and France, as well as from right here in Ukraine. Some of the more popular performances came from: the Polish-Norwegian group Wovoka; the Polish bands Miąższ and Południce Elektronice; Crimea’s ShaturGudur; Kharkiv’s Szklo; and local acts ShockolaD, Gych Orchestr, and Dzyga Jazz Quartet. Kharkiv’s TNMK (Tanok na Maidani Kongo) were the showcase performers at Sunday morning’s traditional “Awakening Concert”.

French Spring 2015 Lviv once again served as the Galician capital for French culture during the annual French Spring last month. This annual cultural initiative that takes place at venues city-wide is organized by the Embassy of France in Ukraine and the Alliance Française French Cultural Centre. This year Leopolitan lovers of French culture and guests of the city were presented with a full buffet of French cultural activities, allowing observers the wonderful opportunity to taste a just a little bit of French culture right here at home. Just a few of the festival activities included: conferences, workshops, literary readings, art exhibitions, theatre performance, and film screenings. Among the most popular activities that local Leopolitans enjoyed were: the illusionist show by Magic Mouss; a special performance of Romain Gary’s novel Memento Vivere by Lviv’s own Les Kurbas Theatre; concerts by the jazz trio Bey.Ler.Bey and jazz/pop group Rapsodie; the Kaleideiffel photo exposition; and the Parisianer poster exhibition.

Don Juan Premieres in Lviv The opera Don Juan, featuring music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, premiered at Lviv’s luxurious Opera & Ballet Theatre on April 27th. The opera, performed in Italian with Ukrainian subtitles, was brought to life as a joint project between the Lviv National Opera and Lviv’s M. Lysenko National Music Academy. This fabulous performance showcased the splendid choreography of Sergiy Naenko and Iryna Mazur, the beautiful costuming of Oksana Zinchenko, and the spectacular stunt-fighting staged by fencing coach Oleksandr Didyk. Renowned Ukrainian director Tadey Ryndzak led the art direction of the performance, while Yuriy Bervetskyi served as producer and conductor.

Days of Croatian Culture Croatia’s popularity around the world continues to grow and from May 1-3 Leopolitans were able to sample the region’s food and products during the Meditarraneo: Days of Croatian Culture festival. For three days, Leopolitans and guests of the city were able to learn all about Croatian culture, music, arts, literature, and film, as well as to discover special offers regarding tourism to the country. One of the highlights of the festival was the performance by the Tovarećа Mužikа musicians, who delighted revellers as they paraded through city centre playing the unique sounds of the local “Donkey Music” on their instruments – ox horns and old irons filled with pebbles.

Colorful Leisure for Children! Яскраве дозвілля – дітям! Lviv’s popular Children’s Railway opened its season to young passengers for the 64th time on May 10th! The event was kicked off with a celebration involving many young railway fans, who officially took over the “Viterets” train and enjoyed their first ride free. Corporation KRT was on hand to provide plenty of pleasant surprises for the children. Popular children’s performer Levko Durko entertained those in attendance with fun games, contests, and prizes. The festivities were extra special this year as the old “Viterets” train, which had just been completely renovated thanks to a generous contribution by Corporation KRT, made its reappearance. The wagons had been completely restored and the Sonyachna station and ticket office had been colorfully redecorated. Renovations at the Lviv Children’s Railway began in April with the “Colorful Leisure for Children!” program and all of the renovations were carried out by the corporation’s employees. Victory Day: To Commemorate and Forgive Lviv’s Petro Sahaidachny Army Academy hosted events to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in WWII on May 7th. WWII veterans, veterans from other Ukrainian military operations, and personnel from the Lviv garrison took part in the solemn event. The Academy regularly hosts events each year on the eve of Victory Day (May 9th) and this year’s slogan was “Victory Day: To Commemorate and Forgive”. For the first time, the event’s symbol was the Red Poppy of Remembrance – a European symbol of WWI and WWII – and not the Russian symbol of the Ribbon of St. George. Those in attendance were welcomed by the Commander of the Army Academy, Lieutenant-General Pavlo Tkachuk and enjoyed a concert, souvenirs, and tasty refreshments.

Fearless Guardian Joint Maneuvers Ukrainian military troops welcomed American advisors to take part in joint training exercises that kicked off at the Yavoriv military base near Lviv on April 20th. The joint exercises were agreed on by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and US Vice-President Joe Biden in early spring. The training by US paratroopers will last for 24 weeks and include some 900 Ukrainian servicemen from several National Guard units. The exercises are expected to teach Ukrainian commanders how to effectively run information operations, how to cooperate with local populations, and how to combat propaganda. In addition, dealing with artillery fire, tactical reconnaissance, the defence of checkpoints, the neutralization of enemy sabotage teams, the clearing of mines, the blocking and neutralization of the enemy, and the administration of first aid are expected to be among the most important lessons of the maneuvers. Operation Fearless Guardian, as the US mission is called, was inaugurated with a rain-drenched welcoming speech by Poroshenko and appeals by security officials for the Ukrainian servicemen to heed the advice of the trainings for reasons that are all too familiar.

До України прибули американські військові радники, щоб взяти участь у спільних навчаннях, які розпочались 20 квітня на Яворівському військовому полігоні поблизу Львова. Спільні навчання були узгоджені президентом України Петром Порошенком і віце-президентом США Джо Байденом на початку весни. Навчання разом з американськими десантниками, що триватимуть 24 тижні, пройдуть близько 900 українських військовослужбовців із декількох частин Національної гвардії. Українські командири навчатимуться, як ефективно проводити інформаційні операції, як співпрацювати із місцевим населенням та як боротися із ворожою пропагандою. 5th Gorgany Half Marathon Lviv was host to the annual Gorgany Half Marathon last month as runners in many different categories (men, women, 60+, and others) participated in the 21 kilometre or 4 kilometre races. Runners were treated to some of the city’s most scenic scenery as they traced their ways through Lviv’s picturesque parks, tranquil Vynnyky Forest, and bustling city centre. The Gorgany Half Marathon is one of Lviv’s leading spring sports events and regularly attracts some of the finest professional and amateur athletes from across Western Ukraine. Ivano-Frankivsk’s Oksana Ugrynchuk and Volodomyr Yurchuk took home the honours in the 21km race, while Lviv’s own Oksana Petrova and Nazariy Chygin’ were crowned champions of at the 4km distance. Three local teams won all the honours in the 4km team category: first place went to Zoom Support 2; second place to Zoom Support 1; and third place to Globallogic 1. Lviv Today congratulates all the participants of this wonderful event.

У чеському містечку Рачіце з 30 квітня до 3 травня відбувся Чемпіонат Європи 2015 з веслування на байдарках і каное. Майже 850 спортсменів з 35 країн змагались у 23 різних дисциплінах. Українська збірна здобула 6 нагород – одне золото, два срібла та три бронзи. Найуспішнішими для українців стали змагання чоловіків у перегонах С2 на дистанції 1000 м, де львівянин Тарас Міщук разом з Дмитром Янчуком виграли золоту медаль з результатом 3:34,292. На рахунку екіпажу каное-двійки (Міщук – Янчук) ще і срібна нагорода на дистанції 500м. Lviv Today вітає усіх українських спортсменів – особливо львів’янина Тараса Міщука, – і бажає їм багато нових спортивних успіхів!

Karate Tournament for Children & Youth Lviv’s Pivdenny Expo Centre hosted the Kyokushing Karate Tournament for Children and Youth on April 25-26. The event was organized by the local Kanku sports club. Founded in 1994, the Kanku club is considered to be Lviv’s oldest and most decorated martial arts organization. The club started with 15 coaching enthusiasts that wanted to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among children and youth. Today Kanku club boasts 27 training grounds around Lviv and over 1000 members. The Kyokushing tournament drew over 1000 athletes of all ages in the beginner (orange belt) division.

Захід був організований силами місцевого спортивного клубу Канку. Заснований у 1994 році, клуб Kanku вважається найстарішим і найбільш титулованим серед клубів бойових мистецтв Львова. Клуб почав свою діяльність, маючи лише 15 тренерів-ентузіастів, які хотіли пропагувати здоровий та активний спосіб життя серед дітей та молоді. Сьогодні клуб Kanku має 27 тренувальних залів по всьому Львову і понад 1000 членів. У цьому турнірі взяли участь понад 1000 спортсменів-початківців різного віку (помаранчевий пояс).

Can we start with an introduction of yourself and an overview of your company? As a Dane with IT and a book-keeping background I was involved in several projects in textile industry. I have always had an adventurous spirit, so that’s how I ended in Ukraine in 2001. My task was to start a greenfield project for Danish textile company “Joha Ukraine” in Lviv region. After my contract was finished I got few more similar requests. Actually, that position gave me a greater understanding of the issues that my future clients were facing. Many foreign companies were finding Ukraine of early 2000’s as a new Klondike for their activity. That’s how the idea to create J&L Consulting, a local partner for foreign companies, appeared in 2003. Our first clients where mostly production companies seeking for good outsourcing conditions in Ukraine. The area of our practices included legal and accounting support, but also has been growing with time and today varies from export-import support to HR and business analytics. 14 full-time employees are now working for the company. I have always wanted to bring the European principles into sphere of business in Ukraine. Therefore, one of my goals was to build a company, which main policy would be a total care for the client and fulfillment of all its needs. Now I can state that 12 years of our activity proves we are successfully achieving this goal. How do you position your company on the market? J&L Consulting is a mid-sized consulting firm with a solid background. Mostly we are serving foreign companies, which are operating in Ukraine. Our clients want to be certain that they have access to the most modern and innovative solutions – and they get it – that’s our products and high quality of our services. We can act on many levels meanwhile paying attention to the smallest details of our client’s cases. Whether it is a production unit for 100+ or less, or it is a sales representative office in agriculture or IT, we will handle all the practical things to ensure that our clients are successful in doing business in Ukraine. What are your top priorities for the next 12 months? In changing surroundings, where Ukraine is at the moment,

it is my top priority to focus on understanding of clients’ needs and provide them with evaluation of their specific businesses and all-round service both with the aim of risk diversification and identification of new opportunities. I therefore will strive to be at the very cutting edge of the consulting industry. There are a lot of new challenges in front of the company, and therefore I want the company to concentrate on employees’ development and create comfortable and inviting atmosphere for our potential clients. Moreover, I would like to invite our present and prospective clients and business partners to see what our new office is like and celebrate our 12 years anniversary together. Do you have any plans for expansion? What are your growth ambitions? Bigger office is already an expansion, isn’t it? We are always looking for more business, and we have started with expanding our sale/marketing department recently, so I expect a minimum of 25% growth in Euro turnover next year. Also we are working on business proposals including new services we’ll be offering to our clients. What key market drivers are positively impacting your business? Ukrainian young people, which go abroad to study and come back to their home country and exchange gained knowledge are making a new fundament of domestic market and contribute to the change of mentality. Different social initiatives driven by proactive part of the population help to change business climate in Ukraine. Government policy and for sure more reforms carried out faster will seriously impact investment climate in Ukraine and consulting business particularly. Which business sectors present the most interesting investment opportunities in today’s Western Ukrainian market? There are several sectors I can recommend, but mostly I’d stop on IT and Agriculture. Ukraine still offers the best quality and great fertility black soil (Chornozem) in Europe with plenty of private farmers and food markets willing to cooperate. With world’s striving for organic foods and sustainable farming – Ukraine offers endless opportunities in this field. As for IT business – it’s not a secret that Lviv is an IT capital of Ukraine offering competitive prices for great quality services and moderate timing. Also the mentality of Ukrainian specialists is close to the western type, which makes it much easier to work with in comparison with Asian competitors. Procedures simplification and Technical barriers to trade elimination. Which one(s) so you foresee as the most vital and why? All of them are important, and in order to improve the business climate and attract foreign investors, Ukraine should undertake its utmost to improve these. However, in my opinion the problem of corruption and Land reform are the biggest barriers for investors right now. What in your opinion can be done to improve investment attractiveness of Ukraine? Ukrainians like to make things complicated – investors like to take business easier. There’s nothing better in the eyes of a client/ a citizen/ a friend than transparency and honesty. Get rid of the corrupt scheme in the justice, tax, customs, education and medical departments, then you will see the growth here.
DOING BUSINESS WITH THE NETHERLANDS On April 23, Regional Coordination Council of EBA Western Ukrainian Office took part in business breakfast with Mr. Kees Klompenhouwer, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ukraine and representatives of Dutch business community who came to Lviv and Volyn regions in order to find business partners and opportunities for investments. During the meeting Taras Yurynts, the Deputy Head of EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council and Oleg Drin, the member of Regional Coordination Council told about advantages and challenges of their investment experience in the Western region and Ukraine and also answered to all questions raised by Dutch investors.
How do you think what reforms or actions should be made by Ukrainian government in order to improve business climate in Ukraine and Lviv region in particular? Make things more transparent, lower the tax on work, update your education system, and make sure that investors can buy land. Could you share your business success story? Our success is connected with the success of our clients. If you sit in the car and drive deeper in Lviv, Ternopil and other regions you will see successfully operating factories instead of abandoned former USSR premises or farms. We have established more than 80 companies with foreign investments on the Ukrainian market. So, taking into consideration the fact that our company has been working in a very specific sphere for more than 12 years – I think that fact speaks for itself. Our success is, first of all, the success of our clients. What are your personal recommendations for anyone who wants to be successful in business? There is no 100% success formula, except hard work. You should always keep focus on your goal, be prepared to invest all your time, all your money, efforts and resources. Otherwise, forget about it. What is the most important management lesson you have learned? I learned that one should never underestimate the skills and energy of people – if you provide them with the right tools and resources, you will reach the success. And always be ready to invest in people. What drives you in your professional and personal life? Despite promising and developing market, Ukraine still remains quite complex and bureaucratic for the new entrants. Nevertheless, I like to observe the development of both the country and people that are around me. I like and appreciate working with professionals and also eager to share my knowledge and experience. It is crucial to remain up-to-date with constantly changing dynamic business environment and that’s also what we did last month by moving into new and modern office at 33A Lychakivska street. If speaking about my personal life, I am both a happy husband and father of two beautiful daughters. That is one of the driven forces – to know that I am responsible for my children and a wonderful wife, their development and happiness. Also I am talking about harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU norms that would open opportunities for Ukrainian goods and services to become competitive and enter new markets, namely European markets that will promote the economic development. After the business breakfast Dutch Trade Mission also met the Head of Regional State Administration and Mayor of Lviv, having already prepared questions and some proposals of future projects. Later on the same day, seminar on doing business with the Netherlands was held at Lviv Regional Council. Seminar started with welcome speeches by Mr. Kees Klompenhouwer, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and representative of Lviv region council. During the seminar participants found out more about what the Netherlands have to offer Ukraine, the PUM program for Ukrainian SME’s, the major aspects of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, Business Club Kyiv-The Netherlands and the EBRD programs for Ukrainian SME’s. Seminar became a good platform for creating cooperation between Dutch and Ukrainian companies, event’s participants. At the evening Ratusha Restaurant hosted the networking reception on the occasion of Dutch King’s Day and the visit of the Dutch Trade Mission to Lutsk and Lviv. Guests of the reception had wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Kees Klompenhouwer, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherland and Embassy representatives in informal atmosphere, establish new business contacts and discuss some relevant issues with Dutch and Ukrainian business communities.

In this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: What are the latest changes in Ukrainian legislation regarding Agribusiness? A In March 2015 the Parliament of Ukraine adopted few draft laws which aim to simplify agribusiness. In particular, they are draft of the law on amendments to some laws regarding incentives for the establishment and operation of family farms, on licensing some types of business activities,and draft of the law amending the Tax Code to support agricultural producers. Simplified establishment of family farms It is proposed to amend the laws on farms and owner-operated farms by setting the stage for the transformation of owneroperated farms into family farms with the status of a legal entity or an individual agricultural producer. The Draft Law proposes to support the simplified procedure for transforming owner-operated farms into family farms, to simplify their registration and organization as well as the relevant licensing procedure. The amendments are intended to eliminate tax barriers in the sale of products generated by owner-operated farms. Simplified licensing for agribusiness The Draft Law will substantially simplify the licensing procedure and reduced the number of business activity types subject to licensing. The Law will introduce modern electronic technologies for issuing licenses, will lay the foundation for more transparent partner relations between government and business in terms of licensing, and will improve the rating of Ukraine under the World Bank classification due to more favorable conditions for the development of entrepreneurship and advanced investment attractiveness. The Law cancels three licenses for agribusiness: – for trade in pesticides and agrochemicals; – for fumigation activities; – for trade in breeding resources. The first two of the above have been cancelled pursuant to the requirement to harmonize the legislation with EU standards, in particular under Directive 2009/129/EC. For instance, trade in breeding resources is classified as low-risk business activity. Therefore, its licensing has been cancelled almost worldwide. Draft Law to support agricultural producers It is proposed to renew the special VAT treatment for processing plants to tax supply transactions with own products (milk, raw milk, dairy products, meat, meat products, other animal processing products (skins, offal, meat and bone meal) made of the milk or meat supplied as live weight by agricultural enterprises, as of 1 January 2015. Also, the Draft Law proposes to change the distribution mechanism for VAT costs paid as compensation to agricultural producers for milk or meat sold by them in live weight in 2015. To this end, it is proposed to transfer the full amounts of compensations calculated as a positive difference between the amount of tax liabilities and the VAT credit amount to special accounts of milk- or meatprocessing plants. On their part, the processing plants will use the value added tax amounts received in special accounts only to pay compensations to agricultural producers for milk and meat sold by them in live weight.

EBA BUSINESS BREAKFAST WITH FINNISH DIPLOMATIC MISSION On April, 15 Regional Coordination Council of EBA Western Ukrainian Office took part in business breakfast with Arya Makkonen, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Finland in Ukraine and Finnish business representatives, which have business in Western region or plan to establish business here. Anton Podilchak and Alina Boychuk told them how the situation in doing business in Lviv had changed, how much the degree of corruption had decreased and on what the Association paid attention in collaboration with the regional authorities. Thus, having analyzed this information the participants of the breakfast had an opportunity to see the pros and cons of investing in the Western region. Then the regional manager of the Association together with the Finnish trade mission had visited the Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration and the Mayor of the city in order to discuss existing problems and find some possible solutions. Both meetings were held in a productive format with the assistance of the Finnish experience and openness to cooperation of regional and city authorities.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING On Tuesday, April 21, at 5 p.m. at the EBA office in Lviv the EBA Management Committee meeting on “Corporate Management in Shell” was held. The invited speaker of the meeting was Mr Peter Shirt who worked for Shell for 25 years holding the last position in Shell as Vice President of Corporate Affairs in Russia. Mr Peter Shirt told the participants about history of Shell, its structure, main activities and corporate management secrets. Shell is vertically integrated and is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation and trading. It has minor renewable energy activities in the form of biofuels and wind. It has operations in over 140 countries. On behalf of EBA members we are grateful to Mr Shirt for his time and motivation and hope to see him again at our meetings!
OUTDOOR MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AND MANUFACTURING COMMITTEE On April 22, EBA members visited the EBA member-company Lviv Brewery (Carlsberg Ukraine). The participant of the meeting had seen the manufacturing capacities during the company tour kindly guided by Mr Oleksiy Oliynichuk, director of Lviv Brewery. After the tour Mr. Oliynichuk presented the general overview of the company activities and specifics of the beer production. Also the participants of the meeting visited Beer Museum and had a chance to taste the products of the Lviv Brewery Company. EBA Western Ukrainian Office on behalf of EBA members expresses its gratitude to Mr Oleksiy Oliynichuk and Lviv Brewery Company for the opportunity to visit the plant and get valuable knowledge and informative answers on questions concerning manufacturing.
