Summer 2016

Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

Each year in late spring or early summer, booksellers, publishers, and authors gather for a national trade show, Book Expo America, known to all as BEA. It's a time to see new books, talk with partners in the business, meet writers we all admire, and reunite with friends. In mid-May the annual event took place in Chicago. For Dee and me it was the thirty-fourth time that we've strolled the aisles, attended seminars, met with publishing partners, and participated in celebrations of authors. Attending with us this year were Sam, our Events Coordinator, and Sarah, our Store Manager and Children's Book Buyer, both veterans of BEA. In addition, Hana, who has recently begun buying children's books, attended for the first time. Her excitement was palpable, which might be expected since everything was brand new to her. But we must admit that after all these years our hearts still beat a little faster and our commitment to this collective enterprise is renewed each time we step into BEA. This year in Chicago was no exception. The news is good. For the seventh year in a row there has been a net gain of independent bookstores. Sales in bookstores have grown once again and long-established stores, like Village Books, are opening additional locations. The prospects for forthcoming great reads from newcomers and revered veterans has never been greater. So there's good reason to be excited. While this edition of the Reader doesn't have the previews and reviews of the books we saw in Chicago (they'll be in the September issue) you will find some great reads here. There's also information about many great author visits, including a couple of Booked at the Baker events, details of happenings in Fairhaven and Lynden, and other articles of interest to avid readers like you. Attending BEA reminded all of us how grateful we are to be in this business, and how much we owe to you, Dear Reader, for that privilege. Thank you!

Well, if you purchased All the Light We Cannot See, The Boys in the Boat, and The Girl on the Train, your total at that other company would have been $108.21. The total through Village Books would have been $67.99. Building Community One Book at a Time

ROBERT

Finishes Another Chapter by Chuck Robinson

R

obert Gruen has good reason to "remember the Alamo." Of course he wasn't there for the battle of 1836, but he was born just across the street from the mission, and spent his growing up years in San Antonio. Like many booksellers, Robert has early memories of books. He recalls Little Raccoon on the Camino Real as the first, and Treasure Island as the most memorable. His love affair with books has continued throughout his life. Among his favorite authors he lists Laszlo Krasznahorkai, Mark Twain, Thomas Bernhard, Plato, and Alexander Pushkin. But, when asked what author, living or dead, he would like to spend a day with, he names local author Thor Hanson. Before he was a bookseller, Robert spent time as a merchant seaman, and as a chef and caterer in New York City, where he catered for Yoko Ono and other theater and rock celebrities. In 1972, while living in New York, he wandered into the legendary Strand Bookstore looking for a book and began his two-and-a-halfyear stint there that same day. He later returned to San Antonio and began working for Half Price Books, where he continued to work after moving to Seattle. He was with the company a total of fourteen years between the two cities. Robert came to work for Village Books on March 30, 1998. Over the course of his time at the store he has managed ticket sales and been a buyer of both new and used books, among a myriad of other tasks. He says his favorite author encounter has been exchanging book recommendations with John Miles, author of Koma Kulshan. When asked about his most unusual experience while working in a bookstore, Robert recounts a time he once saw a woman in a jaguar costume dancing on top of a Temple of Sun in Mexico. Three years later, while telling that story in the San Antonio bookstore where he worked, a bystander turned around and said "that was me." Turns out she was an attorney in the city. Perhaps less unusual, but certainly more fulfilling, is Robert's favorite bookstore experience, meeting his life partner Sue at Village Books. Robert will retire on June 29th, forty-four years after he began his book selling career. Once he hangs up his Village Books name tag for the last time, he'll more avidly pursue the hobbies that currently fill his spare time—cooking, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and gardening. An avid traveler who counts watching white eagles in Australia's Kakadu National Park and Emperor penguins in the Falkland Islands as two of his favorite globetrotting memories, he'll also spend more time seeing the world. Sicily and Turkey are future travel targets. When asked what he'll miss most about working in the store, Robert replies "my nerdy, quirky, lovable colleagues". He sums up his bookselling experience saying, "what a wonderful way to earn a living. Doing what you love."

Be Well, Robert! 360-671-2626 • 800-392-BOOK • villagebooks.com

"My Last Continent is an original and entirely authentic love story. It is a love triangle with Antarctica as the third party, literally and metaphorically. She deftly interweaves a compelling drama with a gentle and subtle love story." —Graeme Simsion, author of The Rosie Project

A stay-up-all-night thriller with twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends. You may think you're walking a familiar path, but then Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.

When Michael sees his wife Nancy chatting with a stranger at a party, his intuition tells him that he's watching her with the man she should have married. Larsen creates a powerful and moving story as the family slowly unravels.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

I loved Ware’s first book In a Dark Dark Wood, and her second novel continues the page-turning, thrilling style. This time the setting is on a luxury cruiser, where travel writer Lo Blackwood is awakened in the middle of the night to a scream and a splash. As she digs deeper to find the mystery woman in the cabin next door, forces unite to stop Lo in any way possible. A Village Books Staff Favorite! Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

available in June, hardcover, Alfred A Knopf

Homegoing follows two branches of a Ghanaian family divided by the slave trade through almost three hundred years on two continents. Each generation brings detailed and real characters living through their piece of history: tribal warfare, colonization, slave ships, and centuries of injustice. But Gyasi gives no one a free pass. The portraits she draws are stunningly honest, fully formed humans making the choices people make, both kind and hurtful. Above it all, through the centuries, runs the enduring bonds of family. The author fits more between the covers of this novel than seems possible. Add Gyasi’s amazing voice and beautiful language and this book is a singular, unmissable experience. –Terri

Homegoing

I haven't been this excited about a book since All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr came out. Homegoing is an incredibly impressive piece of writing and I can't wait for the rest of the world to read it. AMAZING story. Yaa Gyasi is inspiring and truly talented. –Lauren

Homegoing I was stunned by the lyrical excellence of this heart-wrenching novel—this is an absolute masterpiece! Yaa Gyasi has managed to span 200 plus years of brutal African and American history in the most intimate and visceral way; through the lives of two Ghanaian half-sisters and their descendants on both sides of the Atlantic. This book will win ALL the awards this year—I'm calling it now! –Laura P.

A Man of Genius by Janet Todd

available now, hardcover, Bitter Lemon Press

In 1819 London, Ann St. Clair, a writer of gothic novels, is caught up in her own plot of desire, compulsion, and revenge. Having made a living writing cheap, sensational novels for popular consumption, unmarried and approaching middle age, she's established an independent life for herself. Then, at a dinner party, Ann meets the charismatic Robert James, a writer considered brilliant by his reverential pack of followers, and Ann finds herself entranced. Ending up in Venice, the couple disintegrates into their own personal gothic tale.

A Meal In Winter

by Lindsay Hatton

by Hubert Mingarelli translated by Sam Taylor

available in July, hardcover, Penguin Press

available in July, hardcover, The New Press

In 1940, fifteen-year-old Margot Fiske arrives on the shores of Monterey Bay with her eccentric entrepreneur father. Margot has been her father's apprentice all over the world, until an accident in Monterey's tide pools drives them apart and plunges her head-first into the mayhem of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row.

Delicate and brutal, this understated and very human little novel illuminates the unexamined lives of simple people swept up in a tragedy. Three German reservists, hoping to escape the executions they are asked to perform, head into the desolate Polish countryside in search of new prisoners—and end up faced with a moral quandary far more tangled than the one they were running from. –Sam

A Hundred Thousand Worlds by Bob Proehl

available in July, hardcover, Viking

A debut about a mother and son on a cross-country road trip through the world of comic-cons that combines a delightfully geeky setting, winning characters, emotional heft and a deliciously knowing portrait of the alternate universe of fandom. At heart it's a tribute to the fierce and complicated love between a mother and son.

A Thrilling Debut from Lynden Author Spencer Kope

Collecting the Dead by Spencer Kope

available in July, hardcover, Minotaur Books

"Fascinating and compelling! Collecting the Dead reenergizes the crime genre with the introduction of 'human bloodhound' FBI Agent Magnus Craig whose special skills puts him on every serial killer's trail, but also in at least one psychopath's sights. The twists and turns will leave you breathless!" —Lisa Gardner

Leaving Lucy Pear by Anna Solomon

available in July, hardcover, Viking Press

Leaving Lucy Pear is a beautifully writ ten book primarily about three women living on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, whose lives become compassionately entwined. Beatrice finds herself a teen mother. She takes matters into her own hands and leaves her newborn daughter at the foot of a pear tree. She watches from the dark as another mother takes the baby as her own. Award-winning author Anna Solomon writes about the psychology and emotions of womanhood—but most importantly about the strength that women possess. This story reminds me of one of my all time favorite books, Fall on Your Knees, by Ann-Marie MacDonald. –Kelly E.

The Muse

by Jessie Burton available in July, hardcover, Ecco

Jessie Burton (The Miniaturist) has written another novel that looks at a fascinating time period in history. Maneuvering between London in 1967 and Spain in 1936, the tale of a mysterious painting unwinds. Did Isaac Robles, killed in the Spanish Civil War, paint it? Or was it the daughter of the Jewish art dealer from Vienna? How is the head of the London art institute involved, and is young Odell’s lover being completely honest about the painting’s provenance? This is great historical fiction! –Laurie

A Hero of France by Alan Furst

available now, hardcover, Random House

Furst has set this novel during World War II itself, instead of on the eve of the war. Members of the French Resistance network—aristocrats and schoolteachers, defiant heroes and ordinary people—all engaged in clandestine actions for the cause of freedom. From the secret hotels and Nazi-infested nightclubs of Paris to the villages of Rouen and Orleans: this is an action-packed story of romance and intrigue.

The Muse

The author of The Miniaturist brings us another wonderfully written book. This is a passionate story of two complex and intriguing women. England, 1967: Odelle is a Caribbean immigrant who is London trying to make her way as she works in an art gallery. While there, she makes an amazing discovery that will change the history of the art world. Spain, 1936: Olive, a young woman who is on the cusp of becoming a great artist, discovers her own ambitious talent that only leads to unfortunate consequences. I really enjoyed this book and it would be a great summer read! —Kelly E.

As Good As Gone by Larry Watson

available in June, hardcover, Algonquin Books

Calvin Sidey, steely, hardened, with his own personal code, is one of the last cowboys. It’s the 1960s, and he’s living off the grid in a trailer on the prairie when his adult son, Bill, seeks his help. Calvin agrees to stay with his grandchildren for a week. Soon enough problems arise: a boy’s attentions to seventeen-year-old Ann are increasingly aggressive, and a group of reckless kids portend danger for eleven-year-old Will. Calvin only knows one way to solve a problem: the Old West way, in which ultimatums are issued and your gun is always loaded.

Before the Wind by Jim Lynch

available now, hardcover, Knopf

I’m so stoked about this book that I can’t wait to talk to people about it. After three wonderful novels, Lynch finally has an outlet for his lifelong passion for sailing. Through the deeply flawed but quirky and lovable Johannssen family of boat designers, builders, repairers, and racers, Lynch gives us insight into why sailors share that obsessive glint in their eyes. He manages to meld sailing with science, environmentalism, the rapture, online dating, and endearlingly dysfunctional family dynamics into a touching story. His enthusiasm for the subjects is so infectious, even a landlubber like me hung upon every word. (Chosen for our Signed First Editions Club!) —Paul

A wonderful debut novel by Tracy Barone (a screenwriter, playwright, and film producer as well!). Set in four parts, this is a story about a tough, admirable woman named Cheri. Brian Doyle is one of my favorite authors, poets and essayists; he is also one of my favorite people on the planet, because of his love of humanity, with all its foibles and mysteries. His empathic love comes across warmly in this tale of Chicago. Just starting out in his adult life, a nameless young man rents an apartment where he meets a myriad of simple yet complex tenants, and an intuitive dog, Edward. You will enjoy his observations, the White Sox, the local bars, the "cops and nuns and bus drivers" who come to life as he travels through one neighborhood in Chicago. —Cindi

CHUCKANUT

WRITERS CONFERENCE

Friday & Saturday, June 24-25

by Jessica Lohafer, Chuckanut Writers Conference Planner The beginning of summer is a magical time in Bellingham. The days get longer, the weather gets warmer, and people finally begin to venture out of their homes to enjoy everything our beautiful town has to offer. It’s the perfect time for the sixth annual Chuckanut Writers Conference, a writing weekend you’ll never forget. The conference takes place on Friday and Saturday, June 24th and 25th. Featuring literary agents, publishing consultants, and published authors, the conference truly lives up to its theme of Inspiration into Action. Writers at every stage of their career will have the opportunity to participate in lively writers’ workshops, enjoy faculty readings, pick up tips from industry experts, and even pitch their book to literary agents. 2015 Conference Attendee Jordan Kubichek had this to say about the experience: “I have attended this conference for the past four years. The information is always new and invaluable.” This year we are thrilled to announce that we are again offering three master classes! For an additional fee, attendees will have the opportunity to work more closely with conference faculty. Writer Sara Donati will be exploring how to throw a character's voice in her class, Ventriloquism on the Page. Elaina Ellis, poet and Associate Editor at Copper Canyon Press, will be experimenting with the editing process in the Wilderness of Revision. In his class Creative Non-Fiction: Doing Somersaults on the High Ridge, writer Robert Michael Pyle will look at how this kind of writing can make us whole people, as both writers and readers. These master classes are only available to conference attendees, and they're filling up fast! Be sure to sign up before it's too late!

WhaMemWriMo Write your Memoir in September! Everyone has memories, but not everyone writes a memoir. September 2016 is your opportunity to turn your memories into memoir. Join all of Whatcom County in the SECOND annual WhaMemWriMo: Whatcom Memoir Writing Month. All month you will work amid the support and enthusiasm of Whatcom County’s diverse writing community. September events celebrating the memoir—and the people who write them—will include classes, readings, online and in-person connections, and opportunities. The goal for each writer is 1666 words every day. At the end of September you’ll have 50,000 words: a book. You will have given shape and voice to the stories and adventures you always wanted to share, the stories your readers want to hear. WhaMemWriMo is presented by Chuckanut Writers (a Village Books and Whatcom Community College’s Continuing Education partnership), Red Wheelbarrow Writers, and Dwyer Café. During the month of September for WhaMemWriMo: • Register for weekly workshops to help you navigate the issues of memoir writing. Information at VillageBooks. com/Chuckanut-writers. All classes will be taught or led by experienced local memoir writers and teachers. • Take part in "Write Outs" at the Book Fare Café where you can gather with other memoirists to drink coffee, write against the clock, and read your work together. Write-Outs expand your experience and connections with other writers. • Take advantage of opportunities (on a dedicated Facebook Page and in person) to share your struggles, your victories, and your work as your memoir takes shape. • Join in on the culminating celebration. In October, we’ll gather at Village Books with other participants to honor and acknowledge the hard work of writing a memoir. You are invited! You don’t have to complete 50,000 words to participate. WhaMemWriMo is all about process!

How to participate in WhaMemWriMo? Easy!

These poems developed over years of e-mails exchanged between distinquished Seattle poet Lawrence Matsuda and his Ireland-based muse and mentor, renowned poet and essayist Tess Gallagher. Culled from recently discovered notebooks and sheets of paper stored in cases on Neruda's estate, these 21 poems were written from the 1950s to shortly before his death in 1971. Deftly translated by Pulitzer Prize finalist poet Gander, and accompanied by copious notes and illustrations from the manuscripts, this selection is sequentially bilingual. This latest addition to the extensive inventory of Neruda's works is a miniretrospective that captures the essence of his more famous works.

Collected Poems 1950-2012 by Adrienne Rich

available in June, hardcover, W.W. Norton

I am a huge Adrienne Rich fan and this collection of poetry spanning her entire career is one worth owning. Add in an introduction by Claudia Rankine of Citizen fame and I am in! There's a reason Cheryl Strayed carried her poetry along the entire PCT. –Sarah

MARKET DAYS in FAIRHAVEN The Perfect Mid-Week Pick-Me-Up

The Bellingham Farmers Market’s Wednesday Market in Fairhaven is the more laid back cousin of the Saturday Market. With two dozen vendors surrounding the Fairhaven Village Green, this market offers the same quality shopping as our iconic Saturday Market with the added bonus of picnic space, live entertainment and room for families to relax. The kick off for this year’s Wednesday Market was June 1st and the market will continue every Wednesday through August. This beloved gathering place offers families and visitors the perfect location to spend an afternoon (noon to 5 pm), relaxing, putting together a picnic or enjoying lunch from the market's food and produce vendors, and soaking up the festive atmosphere.

"It's an ideal place to meet a friend for lunch, or have a picnic on the grass with your kids. And the fact that you can pick up fresh fixings for dinner is an added bonus!" –Caprice Teske, Market Director

With support from Village Books, the Wednesday Market will continue to offer the Fresh Local Music series that began in 2011, featuring a live performance every Wednesday afternoon from 2:30-4:30pm! Local favorite, musician Chad Petersen, kicked things off on Opening Day, and among the other performers slated for the 2016 season are Amber Darland, Chuck Dingee, Jean Mann, the Loofahs, and Quickdraw String Band, to name a few. NEW this year—the Market will offer SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)/EBT benefits. Participants will be able to swipe their EBT cards for tokens to be used on any SNAP eligible product. In addition, the Market will be able to extend the Fresh Bucks matching program. This program provides up to $10 in matching funds to be used on fresh fruits and vegetables! Stop by the Information Booth for more information.

"The Fairhaven Village Green offers a relaxed setting, perfect for perusing booths at a slower pace," said Caprice Teske, Market Director. "It's an ideal place to meet a friend for lunch, or have a picnic on the grass with your kids. And the fact that you can pick up fresh fixings for dinner is an added bonus!"

Wednesdays, noon-5pm June - August The flagship Saturday Market continues to operate at Depot Market Square in downtown Bellingham from 10am to 3pm every Saturday from April through December and also the third Saturdays of January, February and March. It is a perennial favorite with locals and tourists alike. This vibrant Market is known for attracting large crowds to shop the 100 vendors that sell local produce and goods. The Saturday Market also offers special events such as our Chef in the Market series which showcases local chefs demonstrating their favorite recipes using market-fresh products.

The Starving Artist Cookbook: Illustrated Recipes for First-Time Cooks

by Sara Zin

available now, hardcover, Countryman Press

Aspiring artist Sara Zin turned 30 and hit a wall. She was hungry—starving—to find meaning in her art. Plus, she really wanted home-cooked meals. Zin didn't know how to make them; she never learned how to cook. She decided it was time. And, as a painter, it was only logical that she paint every dish once it was prepared. This cookbook is the result of that year's journey.

Garden Revolution shows how an ecological approach to planting can lead to beautiful gardens that buck much of conventional gardening's counterproductive, time-consuming practices. Instead of picking the wrong plant and then constantly tilling, weeding, irrigating, and fertilizing, Larry Weaner advocates for choosing plants that are adapted to the soil and climate of a specific site and letting them naturally evolve over time.

Lessons from the Great Gardeners: Forty Gardening

Icons and What They Teach Us by Matthew Biggs

available now, hardcover, University of Chicago Press

Since its earliest days, the art and science of gardening has been continually transformed and enhanced by great gardeners. This book profiles forty of these great men and women whose passion for gardening has driven them to improve and innovate, to overcome challenges and experiment with new ideas. The gardeners are drawn from throughout history and from around the world and are illustrated with botanical watercolors, stunning photographs, and commissioned sketches of all 40 gardeners.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Kristen and Anne Celebrate Their Lynden Team

by Sam Kaas

I

was the kid who enjoyed being sent to my room,” says Kristen Morse, of Village Books & Paper Dreams' Lynden store, “because I could read more in there.” She's remembering growing up, the youngest of three sisters, with the work of C.S. Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Jean Craighead George, and Farley Mowat opening up new worlds: to imaginary realms like Narnia and Middle Earth, and to very real ones, like the wilds of Alaska. “

“Books were treasured,” adds her colleague Anne Slee, speaking of her own childhood.

Kristen

Like independent booksellers all around the world, Anne and Kristen bring their shared passion for good books to work with them every day. But they also share a love for their co-workers, and for their community. This passion has served them well in their new roles as Day Captains at the Lynden Store. In their capacity as Day Captains, Kristen and Anne work both with their neighbors in Lynden and with the Leadership Team in Fairhaven to help attend to the day-to-day needs of the store. Both Kristen and Anne have forged deep connections to Lynden. But both of them came here from far away. “I was born and raised in Minnesota,” Anne says. “Our neighborhood had lots of kids in it, and we played together daily.” After high school, Anne went to college to become a teacher, and taught elementary school. She also had a number of other careers, working in retail, and as an event planner. She's also been active as a volunteer. Kristen grew up in Oklahoma, and studied History, Native Studies, and Sociology in college. Her love of history started early, and was shared by her father. “[He] took us on road trips when we weren't in school,” she says. “We traveled to fifteen different states while I was growing up just to see amazing historical sites.” After college, Kristen worked a series of jobs—in coffee shops, in restaurants, and yes, in bookstores. When she moved to the Pacific Northwest from Oklahoma, she gravitated immediately toward her local bookstore—Village Books. Kristen and Anne both started training and working in Fairhaven before the Lynden store opened, and put in plenty of hours shelving books and putting together displays before the doors opened. They learned a lot about the process of opening a brand-new bookstore—and about their fellow booksellers, all of whom trained together. “Prior to opening the [Lynden] store,” Anne remembers, “the center of the store was piled high with a mountain of book boxes. Everyone pitched in to get them all shelved. We are a good team.” (cont...)

...Staff Spotlight continued “The Lynden crew is great,” Kristen says. “We all just clicked, and we all have something very special to bring to the table.” As Day Captains, Kristen and Anne often serve as liasons between the Lynden staff and their counterparts in Fairhaven, so they've learned the many individual strengths of their co-workers firsthand. “Our Lynden staff is knowledgeable in various genres,” Anne says, “and always willing to help customers find the perfect book.” One of the genres Anne knows well is a genre that she's loved for years. “I saved babysitting money and purchased Trixie Belden mystery books,” she says. “I still have them, and yes, I am still a lover of mystery books.” In addition to books, Kristen knows visual arts. She draws occasionally, but her focus is on photography. She's been a photographer since she was fifteen, but only recently began making her work public: postcards featuring her photos are now available at Village Books & Paper Dreams. Anne and Kristen both like to spend time outside when they're not at work.

“and disappearing for a while and spending time in nature.” Both Anne and Kristen have enjoyed getting to know their fellow merchants in the Waples Mercantile Building—and in the greater community of downtown Lynden. “Lynden has received us with huge, open arms,” Kristen says, “and it's been great.” She was in fact so struck by the camaraderie within the Waples Building that she applied for a part-time job at Drizzle, as well, and now works there when she isn't working in the bookstore. She adds that many of the people who work in the building have become fast friends. “I feel like everybody here, and our neighbors, are pretty fantastic,” she says. Anne agrees. “Great neighbors,” she says, “and even better food.” Surrounded by great restaurants like the Lynden Dutch Bakery, Drizzle, and Avenue Bread, Kristen and Anne have found that restaurant regulars have become bookstore regulars—and vice versa. Meeting new customers and hearing their stories is a highlight of working at the Lynden store for Anne and Kristen. “I love seeing customers' reactions when they come in,” Anne says. “Their expressions are fantastic! Many folks remember the building from years ago and marvel at the changes.” “We have great customers who come in and tell us stories about the building,” Kristen adds, “and it can be a very emotional, amazing experience. The historian in me loves these stories.”

What You Should Know about Politics . . . But Don't: A Nonpartisan Guide to the Issues That Matter

This is the perfect book to brush up on a single topic or gain a deeper understanding of American politics.

Viking Economics: How the Scandinavians Got it Right—and How We Can, Too by George Lakey

available in July, hardcover, Melville House

Lakey has spent decades studying the economies of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, and in Viking Economics, he reveals that Scandinavia’s deep commitment to the welfare state is much more recent than we think. Not long ago, Scandinavia was a far more unequal place, with a much weaker commitment to the social welfare of its citizens. There’s nothing inherently Scandinavian about greater equality…so why not try it here?

Prisoners of Hope: Lyndon B. Johnson, the Great Society, and the Limits of Liberalism by Randall B. Woods

available now, hardcover, Basic Books

Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" and the "War on Poverty" have had mixed, but lasting results. Historian Woods argues that one current view of LBJ's social legislation as a failure is simply inaccurate; showing the positive effects of Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal programs that dramatically improved the lives of millions. But Woods also recognizes the failures, many of which were exacerbated by the Vietnam War and its financial demands on the budget, hamstringing LBJ's effectiveness with Congress. Creating a sympathetic view, we see the frustrations and betrayal LBJ felt, of a great politician who learned, to his sorrow, that good intentions were insufficient.

The Best "Worst President": What the Right Gets Wrong About Barack Obama

Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates

In 2012 UK writer Laura Bates launched a website where women could share stories about the sexism they experienced in their everyday lives—the catcalling, being discouraged from pursuing certain careers, the workplace harassment. The project took off like wildfire worldwide as women realized they were not alone in the treatment they experienced on a daily basis, and in this book Bates synthesizes some of the trends she noticed in their stories to address larger questions. This is a powerful mustread if you are a woman, or if you know a woman. –Elise

Sports Wallace on Tennis

Leap of Faith: My Journey to Become the Fastest American on Two Blades

available now, hardcover, Library of America

available in June, hardcover, Howard Books

Both a onetime "near-great junior tennis player" and a lifelong connoisseur of the finer points of the game, Wallace wrote about tennis with the authority of an insider, the showmanship of a literary pyrotechnician, and disarming admiration of an irrepressible fan. Wallace's pieces have been hailed by sportswriters and literary critics alike as some of the greatest and most innovative magazine writing in recent memory.

The inspirational story of Blake Leeper— born without legs and told by doctors he would never walk—and his incredible journey to becoming the first disabled American athlete poised to compete on the US Olympic Team. From growing up poor in rural Tennessee to traveling the world competing for his country, Blake has stayed firm in his belief that the only disability in life is a bad attitude.

String Theory: David Foster by David Foster Wallace

Chasing Water: Elegy of an Olympian by Anthony Ervin and Constantine Markides available now, paperback, Edge of Sports

Even though frequently rebellious in school, Ervin set his first swim record at age 10. A diagnosis of Tourette's syndrome in junior high school made Ervin's behavior even more difficult. After claiming Olympic swimming gold in Sydney in 2000, Ervin shunned his sport for an alluring, albeit less healthy life of sex, drugs, and questionable behavior. After a decade-long hiatus spent doing almost everything an athlete shouldn't, Ervin was slowly drawn back to the water, first as a coach, then a master's competitor, and unbelievably, the U.S. team for the London 2012 Olympics. This fascinating biography follows the thread of Ervin's search for meaning and spirit in life within the world of sports.

REAL PEOPLE TRUE TALES Melville in Love: The Secret Life of Herman Melville and the Muse of Moby-Dick

by Michael Shelden

Melville in Love tells the story of Melville's passionate, obsessive, and clandestine affair with a married woman named Sarah Morewood, whose libertine impulses encouraged and sustained Melville's own. Emboldened through his relationship with Sarah, Melville found the courage to take the leap from light works of adventure to the hugely brilliant, utterly subversive Moby-Dick.

I've Always Kept a Unicorn :

Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan, The Band, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix & Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock

by Barney Hoskyns

available now, hardcover, Da Capo Press

Ok, so what hasn't been written about Woodstock? Well, this book is mostly about the actual town of Woodstock, NY, and how the whole music scene got started there in the first place. From the town's Dutch sawmill settlements, to the advent of folk music and art coming from the Catskills, and the attraction of Greenwich Village and New York City itself, Woodstock became a destination for established and new musicians alike. While the Woodstock Music and Art Fair is touched on briefly, the book centers around music manager Albert Grossman and his famous clients. —Laura O.

Diane Arbus : Portrait of a Photographer

The Biography of Sandy Denny

by Arthur Lubow

available in July, paperback, Faber & Faber

Lubow deftly traces Arbus's development from a wealthy, sexually precocious free spirit into first a successful New York fashion photographer, and then a singular artist who coaxed hidden truths from her subjects. "Arbus gave us an enlarged view of human nature. This book shows who she was and how she did it." —Gay Talese

by Mick Houghton

This scrupulously researched biography draws a detailed picture of Sandy Denny's increasingly complex mental state, as well as the London folk scene in the '60s and '70s. While never over-embroidering the story, Houghton builds it through the intelligent and sensitive recall of everyone from Richard Thompson to the Guardian's Richard Williams.

by Kim Addonizio

available in June, hardcover, Penguin Press

Kim Addonizio hits well on all the little points where life inspires and utterly destroys our ability to create. Filled with love affairs that make the reader blush and cry, this book views writing as less of a discipline and more of a lifestyle. Catullus' Bedspread: The Life

Forbidden Love and International Intrigue in a Doomed World

of Rome's Most Erotic Poet

by Daisy Dunn

by Taras Grescoe

available in July, hardcover, HarperCollins

available in June, hardcover, St. Martin's Press

This is the true story of a British aristocrat, an American flapper, and a Chinese poet who found themselves trapped in an unlikely love triangle amid the decadence of Jazz Age Shanghai. Danger lurks on the horizon, though, as the brutal Japanese occupation destroys the seductive world of pre-war Shanghai, paving the way for Mao Tse-tung's Communists rise to power.

A vivid narrative that recreates the life of Gaius Valerius Catullus, Rome's first 'modern' poet, and follows a young man's journey through a world filled with all the indulgences and sexual excesses of the time, from doomed love affairs to shrewd political maneuvering and backstabbing—an accessible, appealing look at one of history's greatest poets.

At the time the concept of a serial killer was unthinkable, but murders continued, the killer became more brazen, and the citizens' panic reached a fever pitch.

available in June, paperback, Atria

At once personal and political, this is an epic crime drama of wealth, rivalry, and betrayal that offers an unprecedented look into the world of the mega-wealthy Russian Oligarchs—and their influence on the West. Wilcox Pens Sixth Edition of

Hiking Whatcom County

K

en Wilcox's first hike to Mount Baker was in the late 1970s. With his move to Bellingham in 1980 to attend Western, he began hiking and climbing throughout the area, often alone, though as he says "I do prefer company." In the off-season he took to the Chuckanuts and other low country areas. "I hiked my socks off," he says. As people learned how much Ken knew about local trails they began asking for advice on where to hike. "One day someone said, You should write a book! So I did," Ken says. Using his Atari 520ST computer he created the first edition of Hiking Whatcom County in 1987—detailing 44 area hikes. The slim volume has become a bit more of a tome over the years. Its new 6th edition, which added 15 hikes and expanded others, now totals 125 trails. Among those newly listed trails are the Cordata Trail and 100-Acre Woods in Bellingham, Point Whitehorn near Birch Bay, and Lily Point at Point Roberts. Does he have a favorite? "I'm quite partial to the new Rock Trail (at Larrabee State Park), since I helped lay it out and organized the many volunteers, from teenagers to octogenarians, who built the upper half," Ken avows. Several years ago Ken and Kris moved to Washington, D.C., where he works as a senior-level land use and outdoor recreation planner, consulting with agencies and NGOs on issues of solar energy, outdoor recreation, environment, sustainability, and climate change. Though he hopes to relocate back to Bellingham soon, he has taken advantage of his time there to create A National Jaunt, an urban walking guide to Washington, D.C. "There are a handful of them out there already," he says, "but mine is geared more toward hikers, people who not only want to see the sights in the U.S. Capital, but also get a little workout along the way." So, if you're hiking in this, or the other, Washington, Ken has you covered. Hiking Whatcom County is now available and A National Jaunt will soon be available at Village Books.

Nature On Trails: An Exploration

Landmarks

by Robert Moor

by Robert Macfarlane

available in August, paperback, Penguin Books

Landmarks is a book about the power of language and how it can become a way to know and love landscape, from a writer acclaimed for his own precision of utterance and distinctive, lyrical voice. "A book about the language that nature calls into being, on the page and in the mind's eye." –The Independent

From a brilliant new literary voice, an astonishingly original exploration of how trails can help us understand the world—from insect pheromone trails to the Appalachian Trail, from neural pathways to the Internet. It offers new insight into the unseen worlds that surround us and an eye-opening perspective on humanity's place within—and impact upon—this planet.

Coyote America: A Natural

The River

and Supernatural History

by Helen Humphreys

by Dan Flores

available now, hardcover, ECW Press

available June, hardcover, Basic Books

For more than a decade Helen Humphreys has owned a small waterside property on the Napanee River in Ontario. In the watchful way of writers, she has studied her little piece of the river through the seasons and years, cataloguing its ebbs and flows, the plants and creatures that live in and around it, and the signs of human usage at its banks. The result is this gorgeous meditation using fiction, non-fiction, natural history, archival maps, and color photographs to create a work of startling originality.

“A biologist once told me, 'When the last man dies, a coyote will be howling over his grave.' This splendid book makes it clear why that's true, and why the persistent, enduring wildness of this remarkable neighbor should give us great delight.“ –Bill McKibben “With a deft blend of science and history, Dan Flores shows us the coyote as trickster, survivor, and, ultimately, a reflection of ourselves. Terry Tempest

isWILLIAMS Booked at the Baker Wednesday, June 15, 7pm at Mount Baker Theatre

by Chuck Robinson

T

o honor the centennial of the National Park Service, Terry Tempest Williams has penned a literary celebration of our national parks, what they mean to us, and what we mean to them. Through twelve carefully chosen parks, Terry creates a series of lyrical portraits that illuminate the unique grandeur of each place while delving into what it means to shape a landscape with its own evolutionary history into something of our own making. Part memoir, part natural history, and part social critique, The Hour of Land is a meditation and manifesto on why wild lands matter to the soul of America. Terry Tempest Williams has come to Bellingham for a number of her books, including her 2012 book, When Women Were Birds. Terry returns on Wednesday, June 15, as part of our Booked at the Baker series, when she'll talk about The Hour of Land. In addition to our series partner, the Mount Baker Theatre, North Cascades Institute and North Cascades National Parks join us as program sponsors. The following is from a recent interview that Chuck conducted with Terry. Q: In "A Note to the Reader" you say, "Language and landscape are my inspiration." Was there something, besides this year's anniversary of the Park Service, that specifically inspired you to write about national parks vs. other landscapes? A: Growing up in Utah, national parks are our backyard, literally. Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef, and Arches and Canyonlands are my home ground. Go north to The Tetons and Yellowstone and you have the full range of my migration. Our public lands are our public lands. They are my passion—personally and politically. It is where my heart dwells. Q: If I'm correct there are 62 national parks. How were these 12 chosen? A: Some I know well like the Tetons and Canyonlands; others I have visited several times like Theodore Roosevelt and Acadia; while others were completely new to me like Gates of the Arctic, Big Bend, and Gettysburg National Battlefield. And then there were those that startled: like Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa on the banks of the Mississippi River, a truly sacred sight. (continued on the next page...) ...continued from previous page

Q: Is there one of these parks, or another, that you regularly return to? If so, why? A: Canyonlands is home, yet it remains a mystery. It deserves our love and vigilance. And of course, the Tetons—a familial landscape and has been for six generations. Q: What is your first memory of visiting a national park? A: Drinking with cupped hands at Hidden Falls on the other side of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park with my mother and grandmother on either side of me. Q: The landscapes you describe in the book are diverse. What do you see as the unifying thread among them? A: The wind.

Summer 2016

Terry Tempest

isWILLIAMS Booked at the Baker Q: What was your greatest takeaway from the time you spent in these parks and writing this book? A: I thought I was writing a book about national parks, instead I wrote a book about America. How there is no one story, but many stories that contain both shadow and light. I don't see our national parks as "our best idea" but our evolving idea as exemplified in the Cesar Chavez National Monument. Q: The stories you relate here, as in all of your books, are deeply personal. You say "Our national parks hold our stories in inexplicable ways." Many people visit parks to learn about the place, are you saying, "visit the parks to learn about yourself"? A: Not necessarily, though as John Muir says, "Going out is really going in..." We visit national parks to learn about Other—be it a place or a grizzly bear or a battlefield. Any time I visit a national park, I meet the miraculous. Natural histories and the diversity of our national histories reside here—our national parks are stories' landscapes and not without their shadows regarding the displacement of native peoples. Our national parks become memory palaces alive with the memories we have shared with our loved ones to an evolutionary memory of our deep past. We are one species among many—and it is also true, our historical past as a nation is buried in the furrows of the fields at Gettysburg. Our national parks are the closest thing we have as a country to sacred lands. They are our individual and collective inheritance as Americans.

Crucial Time for Mothers and Children— And the World

by Dr. Joseph Garcia

Good health and nutrition during the first 1000 days of life, from the beginning of pregnancy to age 2, are amazingly important to a child's development, both physically and mentally. They exert a lifelong influence on the child's ability to grow, learn, and succeed, yet worldwide many children are stunted due to poor nutrition and limited healthcare. This book tells the stories of mothers and their children in Uganda, India, Guatemala, and Chicago, showing the challenges they face. The author shows us various programs in place around the world, but also puts human faces on the problem. —Chris

The list includes (but is not limited to) her parents and the problems they pretend not to have, and being sent for the summer to grandparents she has never met. Five Children on the Western Front by Kate Saunders

available in August, hardcover, Delacorte Books for Young Readers

For fans of E. Nesbit's classic 5 Children and It, you will find in Saunders' latest addition to the saga not just a continuation, but a true tribute to the story that Nesbit penned in 1902. The writing is consistent with the first books, maintaining the wit and integrity of Nesbit's story but this goes much deeper as the children are growing up on the eve of the first World War. The Psammead is back in all his self-centered cheekiness but it seems he has some amends to make for misdeeds as an ancient tyrannical ruler before he can rest. Truly delightful. —Claire

The Trials of Apollo:

Middle Readers Towers Falling

This is another powerful story told by award-winning author Jewell Parker Rhodes. The multi-cultural triumvirate of Deja, Ben, and Sabeen team up and show us how that single day in American history impacted us all, and continues to do so today. I highly recommend this book for upper elementary school classrooms—it is a sensitive story with rich characters. –Laurie

Young Adult Review Committee

Lessons Learned Along the Way

by Claire McElroy-Chesson, Kids Programming Director at Village Books

I

t has been a year and a half since the first meeting of the Young Adult Review Committee here at Village Books and during that time, we have seen a few changes and I have learned many things. For those of you unfamiliar with what this stellar group of young people does, let me break it down for you. We meet once a month in the readings gallery where I have young adult ARCs, or Advanced Reader Copies, of books for the teens to peruse. (ARCs are books that are distributed to bookstores by publishers in advance of the release date to the general public. This gives us an opportunity to preview books that will be coming out so that we can be prepared to tell our customers about them as they hit the shelves.) My teen reviewers are permitted to check out 4 books at a time and in exchange for this privilege, they owe me at least one review before the next time we meet the following month. These reviews can be found in every issue of the Chuckanut Reader, on the dedicated display in the store, and now on our brand new Facebook page (facebook. com/villagebooksyarc)! But here’s the thing that surprised me. I had no idea how much these kids would teach me along the way. The original idea was that we could find out from teens what actually appeals to them, rather than passing along recommendations of young adult books that we on the staff enjoy. Don’t get me wrong. There are many folks on the Village Books staff who are gaga about YA. We have no shortage of reviews in that genre! But here’s the sad fact: we aren’t teens. As much as we may like to think that we can channel our inner 15-year-old and know what will appeal to adolescents, we aren’t always on the mark. So to better serve our customers, it seemed wise to go straight to the target group and find out just what they really want to read. So here are a few things I have learned: 1. Covers matter. My group enjoys pointing out the terrible, cheesy cover art that publishers seem to think appeals to teens. If a book has an awful cover, they will often pass over it. (O.K., I admit it. I do the same thing.) One member who shall remain nameless, prefers to read books with only red covers. 2. Clichés are totally transparent to this group. A favorite activity of theirs is looking through the ARCs and finding books with the most clichés in the synopses. i.e. Dystopian re-telling of a fairy tale with a romance and terminal illness thrown in. Think of some examples. It’s fun! 3. These young people are extremely thoughtful about what they read and they have high standards regarding plot and character development and the quality of the writing. They can be pretty brutal in their criticism, which I love. 4. Books are still a lifeline for young people. These kids read even when they are swamped with homework, extracurricular activities, and life in general. 5. They are hilarious. The day they created a venn diagram of some popular YA books and the clichés found therein was one of the funniest conversations I have heard. Ever. (Y.A.R.C. continued)

But probably the most important thing that I have learned from these teens is that despite their varying schools, ages, or backgrounds, their passion for reading is common denominator enough to make them comfortable with each other. Coming together to talk about books for one hour every month unites them in a way that I feel privileged to share. Jennifer Longo, author of Up to This Pointe and Six Feet Over It remarked after being our guest in February, "I could stay and hang out with this group of teens all day!" I couldn't agree more. If you know of a teen who might be interested in joining the Y.A.R.C., please encourage them email me at claire@villagebooks.com.

The Lonely Ones

Queen of Hearts

Written in free verse, The Lonely Ones is a quick yet touching read. Attempting to make up for the lack of love in her family and friends, young Fain uses her imagination to go on adventures with her monster friends every night. As she slowly begins to be acknowledged by people other than her baby brother, she begins to realize that her nighttime ventures no longer satisfy her desire for true friendship. –Brynna K., age 16

Dinah is the princess of Hearts, first in line for Wonderland's crown. But when a shocking announcement is made about her family, she's thrust into Wonderland's mad political world full of secrets and lies. Colleen Oakes' retelling of the wellknown Lewis Carroll story centers on Wonderland's most famous queen. Queen of Hearts is Alice in Wonderland with a Game of Thrones flare that will leave you wanting more. –Emma W., age 19

Places No One Knows by Brenna Yovanoff is the story of Waverly Candemnar, a hardworking straight-A student who finds out she possesses the ability to travel through her dreams. Marshall, a young man barely scraping by in school, has an entirely different perspective on life. The story follows the unlikely relationship of these adolescents and surprises the reader with unusual plot twists and a unique perspective of what defines young love. —Hannah M. age 17

And I Darken by Kiersten White

available in June, hardcover, Delacorte Press

In Draw the Line, an aspiring cartoonist named Adrian is a shy person who doesn't speak his mind or like drawing attention because of his reasonable fear of being bullied. After a hate crime directed at a fellow gay person takes place, Adrian decides that he should use his art to spread awareness about the hate crime despite his fear. This is an inspirational read where you can really see a lot of character development. –Kirsten N. age 15

Young Adults Recommend...

And I Darken, by Kiersten White, follows Lada Dragwyla, a princess who has been raised to be brutal and loyal, as she battles her way through the Ottoman Empire. By her side is her calm and gentle brother Radu, and Mehmed, their friend with his own claim to royalty. Lada must face betrayal, heartbreak, and even her own family in White's stunningly beautiful and richly imagined historical fiction novel. Perfect for fans of Throne Of Glass and The Young Elites, White's latest novel is not only her best, but one of the genre's best. —Rosie T., age 16

The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye

available now, hardcover, Harper Teen

It’s hard to believe The Crown’s Game is Evelyn Skye’s debut novel. Set in an alternate Imperial Russia, this book shall take you on a wonderful roller-coaster ride of emotions. It was so good and surprising and painful that it’s hard to express in words just how much you need to read this book. The Tsar needs one enchanter to aid him against enemies, but what happens when there are two? A historic magical duel to the death called the Crown’s Game is held. The two enchanters are bound to compete, but when feelings get complicated, so does the game. –Gretal M. age 16

Julia Vanishes by Catherine Egan

Enter Title Here

available in June, hardcover, Knopf

by Rahul Kanakia

available in August, hardcover, Disney/Hyperion

Enter Title Here is the next reason you’ll stay up at night: a novel that will captivate teens and adults alike. Reshma Kapoor is a high school senior who knows what's up, but as she rounds out the college competition, things get complicated. See, Reshma's used to tackling new challenges, but now she's promised the literary contract that'll get her the winning scholarship and her competitive spirit demands that she not only finish top in her grade but that she snuff out the rest. From the hordes of “unique” school stories, Enter Title Here is finally a singularly satisfying read. –Nich V. age 15

Julia Vanishes is about a spy infiltrating the household of rich and eccentric Mrs. Och. Julia is gifted with powers of invisibility, but she can’t fulfill her mysterious employers’ demands. Disappearing trees and werewolves in the basement don’t interest them. While posing as a housemaid is dull, everything’s spiced up by a murder, especially when the murders trail their newest houseguest. Nothing is resolved at the end, as this is the first book in a series, but I’m in for the long haul—the plot is powerful fantasy, full of action and death. Gotta love supernatural murders and cynical orphans. –Haleh M., age 16
