Dear Reader,

As we approach the end of 2021, we look back upon a year full of continued changes and transformations. Though not nearly on par with 2020, we are still feeling the effects and recognizing silver linings. And yet, the remembrance of old sayings reminds us that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Yep, social distancing is still a thing. We look forward to the day when it's not but, until then, we're finding ways to cope. We've enjoyed a return to in-person events including our first Chuckanut Radio Hour since February of 2020 and a series of sold out events in our Readings Gallery. We, along with everyone else, are experiencing the now-familiar woes of "supply chain disruption" in unexpected ways, but are compensating by getting what we can, when we can. (We may not have that, but we've got THIS and it's even better!) It's truly happening everywhere, even online: that perceived bastion of I can get whatever I want whenever I want it. Between paper-shortages, manufacturing closures, and transportation woes, the notion of instant gratification is continuously challenged. The adage of "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need," is helpful to remember. Thank you, Rolling Stones, for words of wisdom in trying times. You'll see a great many new faces in our stores when you visit. Though we're experiencing the same loss of valued staff for various reasons the same as everywhere else, this has created opportunities for wondrous new individuals to join us who are passionate about sharing their love for reading, for service, and for building community as ever. Remember, "a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet." So, Dear Reader, if you encounter a new face with a Village Books and Paper Dreams nametag on, please introduce yourself. They're looking forward to getting to know you. The world may feel as though it's been sloshed about and we're all looking forward to when it's a bit more settled. Until then, our aim is to provide as much consistency, safety, and service as we can for our customers, our employees, and our community. Fairhaven Lighted Bike Parade Meet at 5pm at Hillcrest Chapel parking lot (14th Street and Larrabee Ave) Show up with your decked out bike, helmet and mask. At 5:30pm, we'll head out. Those who want a casual, easy ride, can circle Fairhaven Village a few times. Those feelling more adventurous can head downtown by way of the South Bay Trail. At the same time a group from downtown will be heading to Fairhaven. Riders on both ends will be greeted with hot chocolate, cider and holiday treats. Not up for the ride? nce again, we have come to the winter holiday season. How this happened so quickly, I’m not really sure. It seems like just yesterday we were swimming in Lake Whatcom and talking about our favorite camping spots. As lovely as summer is, autumn and early winter (and I’m not alone in saying this) are so very special for most. It's a time to slow down, a time to curl under a blanket with a favorite book. It is also a time to think of friends and relatives both near and far. The world is opening up ever so slightly and we are able to share our meals with others, and to plan our Christmas gatherings. For some of us however, we are still finding it difficult to see loved ones. Creating a lovely home and sending joy to others is what we strive for. Candles have always been a source of calmness and make wonderful gifts for anyone on your list.

HIMALAYAN CANDLES was started in 2004 as a home-based business, by pouring wax into wooden containers bought in India. The company grew from there as it found its niche. Himalayan has created a variety of candle collections, all with their own distinctive look and coordinating fragrances, inspired by a time and place, a memory, or a recollection of home. The vessel and fragrance together will tell a story of aroma, aesthetic beauty, functionality, and reuse. Absolutely beautiful and hand poured in Decatur, Georgia, these candles will make any room feel that much more special. What I really enjoy purchasing for the store are

ORNAMENTS! One of the best parts of the many Christmas trees we have in the store decorated with ornaments is the thrill of hearing a child as they gaze up at the tree. Adults too, laugh and reminisce as they look through the branches. Our glass vintage ornaments are beautifully created. And who wouldn’t want a possum or a bigfoot, or even a morel glistening on the tree? You might appreciate a more modern take on ornaments like a cube of butter or a tin of sardines. You'll find felt animals, sea creatures, and ornaments with local themes. There really is something for everyone!

Village Books and WCC Community & Continuing Education offer a writing instruction collaboration called Chuckanut Writers. These programs are designed to inspire and encourage writers at all stages of their writing journey. Check out these upcoming classes: Indie Publishing & Marketing Series with Rob Slater Putting Pressure Thursdays, 1/27/22 - 2/10/22 6pm-8pm (3 sessions) on Characters with Becky Mandelbaum Wednesdays, December 1-15 6:30-8:30pm Virtual Pressure is at the heart of any great story, but sometimes we instinctively protect our characters. Join instructor Becky Mandelbaum and learn to create a scene that keeps your reader turning the page. We'll look at how to increase narrative tension by applying pressure through plot, interiority, pacing, and more, taking guidance from examples in contemporary fiction and famous fairy tales. All participants will have a chance to workshop their writing. Becky has published two books including the novel The Bright Side Sanctuary for Animals, and her work has appeared in numerous literary magazines.

It's Back - Celebrating 19 Years!

Western Washington University will celebrate the 19th annual Children's Young Adult Literature Conference by welcoming four award-winning authors and illustrators to campus on Saturday, February 12, 2022. The Conference runs from 9am to 3pm and will be held at Western’s Performing Arts Center. Preregistration is required. The conference brings together teachers, librarians, readers, writers, and children's literature aficionados to celebrate children’s and young adult literature. The conference includes author and illustrator presentations, book sales and autographs, a question-and-answer panel, and an announcement of the 2023 featured speakers.

I am Enough

All my memories fit into the palm of a crab shell, But I'm okay with that. I spend so much time trying to live up to other peoples' standards, For what? A taste of false reality? What is their validation worth to me? It is sweet and addictive like sugar, And I feed off of it until it fills my own voice, And I no longer can see clearly. The truth is that I am merely me, And I find peace with that. Perhaps in another world I'd be desperate for validation. Perhaps I'd like to expand and impose, To seek and to find, But for now, Who I am is enough. My memories and I can live happily in a crab shell. To say "I am enough" Is more powerful than anything I could find in this world of objects, So perhaps I shall be happy with staying small, With helping others expand, To seek but never find what people say I should. Because my place on earth Is equal to a crab shell in the ocean, I don't impose, I am just here, I am loved, I am felt, I am enough.

I am from the warmth of curling up next to my dog on a cold afternoon. I am from the joy of becoming one of the characters in a story. I am from scraped knees and elbows, of the exhilaration of climbing, leaping from rock ledge to ledge. I am from the gracefulness of skiing floating, flying down hills snow stinging my face, wind roaring so loud it drowns out everything else. I am from the sky swooping diving, Free. I am from the whispers floating through my mind snippets of story singing every time. I am from new friends I've made and old ones I've kept, that is where I'm from so tell me where are you from?

Briar Girls is a dark fantastical retelling of Sleeping Beauty set in a forest full of danger, magic and curses. As soon as the main character, Lena, entered the Silence, a sentient forest known to lure people into the trees, I was pulled in with her on her journey of self-discovery and a search for answers to the lies of her past. I also loved the LGBT representation, including a bisexual main character, and transgender and non-binary side characters. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an atmospheric fantasy to get lost in. –Sarah K. age 19

Unique and haunting, Roxy offers a look into the opioid epidemic, and the complexities of addiction. One thing I really appreciated about the book was the positive impacts of these drugs weren’t ignored. There is a line between use and abuse and the book recognized that. The story is narrated by siblings named Isaac and Ivy as well as the personified drugs Adderall and Oxycodone. As a reader I found myself rooting for the siblings even as they continued down their destructive path. Overall, this was not an easy read but was definitely an important one. –Sarah K. age 19

MINDFULNESS WORKSHOP with Tim Burnett

Curious about mindfulness? Led by the Executive Director of Mindfulness Northwest, Tim Burnett, this one-hour interactive presentation will introduce you to the research behind mindfulness and how it can help us live more peaceful and fulfilled lives. You'll leave with a handout and a tool kit of simple practices to use at work and home. This participatory, practical introductory class includes: Definitions and benefits of mindfulness, a helpful handout summarizing the benefits and practices of mindfulness, body and breath awareness practices, group dialogue and small group discussion, and suggestions on resources for ongoing practice and how to apply mindfulness at work and home. Based on the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, which has been shown to reduce chronic pain and boost the immune system, address painful mental states like depression and anxiety, minimize emotional reactivity and promote well-being, and increase flexible attention and sharpen mental focus.
