Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader,
The winter months are upon us, a time for us to enjoy the fruits of our labors, a time to celebrate traditions old and new, and to connect with family and friends. In the pages within, you'll find many of our traditions still going strong, along with a few new ones. Our Pre-Holiday Open House is always a favorite (see page 5) where you can visit with friends, discover some of the great new items we've brought in this year, and even win fun prizes. The very next weekend, we celebrate the second anniversary of our Lynden store. (see page 38) Was it just two years ago? My, they grow up fast! And then Small Business Saturday / Indies First is upon us! (page 7). We count ourselves fortunate to be a part of a community that values its independent businesses that, in turn, support the many organizations that help make this such a special place to call home. You've generously Rounded Up your purchases this year in support of Recreation NW and the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center and now the holidays give us all another chance to give through our annual Giving Tree (see page 4). There may be turmoil in the world around us, but you can still make a difference right here where you live. We're very excited to announce our newest Chuckanut Editions publication, A Higher Perspective: Aerial Photos of the Pacific Northwest by Tore Ofteness. His photographs are awe-inspiring both in their composition and the moments of history that he's captured. Look for his presentation on December 1st along with a great many other author events. The coming year of events promises to be as full as ever, kicking it off in January with our annual Resolutions Weekend (page 11). And WE resolve to always be a place where you can find connections, make discoveries, and feel right at home.

indies FIRST and SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY A Day Dedicated to Supporting Small Businesses — and Independent Bookstores — Across the Country Village Books and Paper Dreams joins forces with independent businesses nationwide to mark Small Business Saturday and Indies First on Saturday, November 25, a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and celebrating community. Conceived by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize brick-and-mortar businesses that are local. Indies First is the brainchild of author Sherman Alexie, who in 2013 encouraged fellow writers to volunteer to work at an independent bookstore on Small Business Saturday. The campaign blossomed with the support of publishers and authors. FAIRHAVEN - This year, local authors Clete Smith and Craig Romano will work Indies First shifts at Village Books in Fairhaven. Smith will be at the store from 12-2pm Romano takes over from 2-4pm. They’ll recommend books and talk about their own. Smith’s new book Mr. 60% is his first for teens. Romano’s Urban Trails Bellingham is on the Village Books bestseller list. LYNDEN - At our Lynden store, we'll have local author JES STONE on hand from 2-4pm to sign copies of her new book, The Last Outrageous Woman, and talk about her favorite reads this season. Events like Indies First underscore how small, local businesses contribute to a community’s cultural experiences. But there are also significant economic impacts. According to the American Independent Business Alliance: “Independent retailers return to their community more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than do chain competitors.”
Thanks for Shopping Indie!

Welcome Home, Chuck Celebration! Saturday, November 18, 7pm At Village Books in Fairhaven
Village Books co-founder successfully completes his Big Ride Redux In the summer of 2015, Village Books and Paper Dreams co-founder Chuck Robinson set out to ride his bicycle from Bellingham to his hometown of Galva, Illinois — a distance of about 2,400 miles. Things went well until a run-in with some nasty dogs ended the ride prematurely. Undaunted, on September 1st, 2017, Chuck climbed back on his bike and finished what he started, a distance of about 2,000 miles. Thanks to Chuck’s own philanthropy and donations from
8 Winter 2017-2018
friends, family, and fans, Chuck’s Big Ride Redux raised an estimated $20,000 for three non-profits: the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC), Whatcom Community Foundation, and Whatcom Community College Foundation. Join us as we welcome Chuck and Dee home to Bellingham with a special party on Saturday, November 18th from 7-8pm in our Readings Gallery. Representatives of the three foundations will be on hand to share their missions and Chuck will spin tales of his epic ride. Light refreshments will be served.

After falling headlong into a passionate affair during a semester spent teaching in Ohio, Phillipa returns home to Iowa for her daughter Ginny’s wedding. There, Phillipa must endure a wedding-day tornado, a menace of a mother-in-law who may or may not have been a Nazi collaborator, and the tragicomic revenge fantasies of her heretofore docile husband. Naturally, she does what any newly liberated woman would do: she takes a match to her life on the prairie and then steps back to survey the wreckage.
Hiddensee : A Tale of the Once & Future Nutcracker by Gregory Maguire
available now, hardcover, William Morrow
It has been awhile since I have enjoyed one of Maguire's books so much. Here we have the origin of Herr Dirk Drosselmeier, the maker of the famous Nutcracker. There are so many layers to this story with references to the Grimm brothers, Greek mythology, and the Arthurian legend, among others. Drosselmeier is a complex man with a strange childhood befitting a fairy tale, and those elements weave throughout the entire novel. I, for one, will be reading it again to capture all of the things that I missed the first time around. –Claire
Heather, the Totality by Matthew Weiner

The Miranda
by Geoff Nicholson available now, paperback, The Unnamed Press
Running, or in this case walking, away from the past rarely works out the way we hope, and in The Miranda our seemingly quiet protagonist Joe is no exception. Through him Nicholson explores the potential we have for brutality, and the ways in which society chooses to justify it. Dryly funny observations and amusingly off-kilter characters bump up against scenes of straightforward but shocking violence, resulting in the literary equivalent of watching a Coen Brothers movie. –Stephanie
Three Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak
available in December, hardcover, Bloomsbury USA
As a young woman abroad, Peri had become friends with the charming, adventurous Shirin, a fully assimilated Iranian girl, and Mona, a devout Egyptian-American. Together the three are the Sinner, the Believer, and the Confused. Their arguments about Islam and feminism find focus in the charismatic but controversial Professor Azur. In Istanbul, as terrorist attacks come ever closer, Peri is moved to recall the scandal that tore them all apart.
The End We Start From by Megan Hunter
available in November, hardcover, Grove Press
Megan Hunter’s poetic, sparse writing has the uncanny ability to keep the reader’s mind in the practical moment, and then catapult it to existential heights, asking huge questions about love, loss, and endurance. A short, powerful read, The End We Start From is a story of disaster … but also of communal ties, motherhood, and what it means to survive when one’s world is coming apart wave by wave. –Hannah

A Great Gift... The Stolen Marriage
by Diane Chamberlain "In 1944 reeling from the impact of WWII, Hickory, North Carolina experienced an outbreak of polio. Through the eyes of a young nurse, Chamberlain shows us the “Miracle of Hickory,” in which a small community bands together to build, staff and supply a modern polio hospital from scratch in a matter of a few days. Not an easy task in a very divided town. This is wonderful historical fiction, with a side order of women’s rights issues." –Terri
Caroline : Little House, Revisited
by Sarah Miller
available now, hardcover, William Morrow
Sarah Miller’s writing captures the familiar tone of the Little House series and adds the depth of a new perspective to the Ingalls' family narrative. This representation of Caroline Ingalls’ experience illuminates the realities of being the mother of a pioneering family. It is a great privilege to know the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her mother; this book also gave me a deep appreciation for the unknown women in history who made homes for their families and turned fears of the unknown into hopes for the future. –Hannah
New CLASSICS Section Customers have often asked for our Classics Section so we're breaking out classic fiction and giving it a space of its own. The fiction shelves closest to the Book Fare Café counter will now contain classic fiction. Classics are books which have endured the test of time. Generations have enjoyed these books and found them important. Perhaps you've wanted to reread Moby Dick or see what else Melville had up his sleeve? Fan of Dickens? Man, he wrote a lot of books. If you've ever read Steinbeck, you probably want to read all of Steinbeck. There are many reasons to check out the Classics section. And as far as gift giving, you can be certain these are "good books." Check out the pretty gilt-edged editions on the spinner rack!

FICTION
by Colson Whitehead
Mahony returns to his hometown to investigate a message regarding his unknown birth mother. His presence completely changes the village. Women fall all over themselves. Chatty ghosts rise from their graves with secrets to tell, and the local preacher will do anything to get rid of the slippery young man threatening the moral purity of his parish.
Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner. Now out in paperback! As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors of the antebellum era, he seamlessly weaves in the saga of America, from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is both the gripping tale of one woman’s will to escape the horrors of bondage and a powerful meditation on the history we all share.

Hanna Casey, having left her cheating husband and sophisticated lifestyle, finds herself living with her mother in rural Ireland, driving a mobile library van along the West Coast. With the threatened closing of the town's library, Hanna finds herself in a battle to restore the heart and soul of the Finfarran Peninsula's fragmented community.

Kid Moses
by Mark R. Thornton available in November, paperback, Arcade Publishing
Unsentimental, honest, brutal, and lyrical, this hypnotically written book provides insight into the issues that affect modern Africa: the relationship between human beings and the wilderness, the needs of the displaced and the dispossessed, and the ties that bind us together. Thornton uses the experiences of one unfortunate but resourceful child to juxtapose urban homelessness with societies found in the wild, showing that even in places of violence and indifference, human compassion can be found.

Published in 1928, this is a literary murder mystery which was said to have been inspired by the 1927 suicide of Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Tanizaki's colleague and literary rival (The author of Rashomon, he was sometimes called "the father of the Japanese short story.") Mizuno, a writer, is composing a murder mystery. He finds that one of the characters — the intended victim — resembles another writer in his circle. He develops a superstition that the real-life writer will die and that he will be implicated when his story is seen.

Interesting and clever sci-fi short stories written about a variety of topics. Stories range from aliens to artificial intelligence, video games, mythological creatures, and more. Think Local First! this Holiday Season
Sustainable Connections’ Think Local First! campaign reminds us of the benefits of buying local this holiday season. Here are 10 great things that happen when you choose to shop with independent businesses such as Village Books and Paper Dreams. 1. Buying Local Is Supporting Yourself Too Several studies show that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business — rather than a nationally owned business — significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms — continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. 2. Support Community Groups Non-profit organizations receive on average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. 3. Keep our Community Unique Where we shop, where we eat and have fun — all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. 4. Reduce Environmental Impact Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation, and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, and pollution. 5. Create More Good Jobs Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally, and in our community provide the most jobs to residents. 6. Get Better Service Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. 7. Invest In Community Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Put Your Taxes To Good Use Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. 9. Buy What You Want, Not What Someone Wants You To Buy A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses – each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers – guarantees a much broader range of product choices. 10. Encourage Local Prosperity A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-ofa-kind businesses and distinctive character. 28

Where the Past Begins : A Writer's Memoir
by Amy Tan
available now, hardcover, Ecco
Tan is at her most intimate in revealing the truths and inspirations that underlie her extraordinary fiction. Logical Family : A Memoir by Armistead Maupin
available now, hardcover, Harper
Reflecting on the profound impact those closest to him have had on his life, Maupin shares his candid search for his “logical family,” the people he could call his own. What emerges is an illuminating portrait of the man who depicted the liberation and evolution of America’s queer community over the last four decades with honesty and compassion — and inspired millions to claim their own lives.
by Maude Julien, translated by Adriana Hunter
Vacationland : True Stories
available in December, hardcover, Little, Brown and Company
by John Hodgman
Julien's parents believed it was their sacred duty to turn her into the ultimate survivor — raising her in isolation, tyrannizing her childhood and subjecting her to endless drills designed to "eliminate weakness." But Maude's parents could not rule her inner life. Befriending the animals on the lonely estate as well as the characters in the novels she read in secret, young Maude nurtured in herself the compassion and love that her parents forbade as weak.

Ideas about what makes a war “civil” often depend on whether one is a ruler or a rebel, victor or vanquished, sufferer or outsider. Calling a conflict a civil war can shape its outcome by determining whether outside powers choose to get involved or stand aside: from the American Revolution to the war in Iraq, pivotal decisions have depended on such shifts of perspective.

Dickey pays attention not only to the true facts behind a ghost story, but also to the ways in which changes to those facts are made. Spellbinding, scary, and wickedly insightful, Ghostland discovers the past we’re most afraid to speak of aloud in the bright light of day is the same past that tends to linger in the ghost stories we whisper in the dark.
The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom : America and China, 1776 to the Present by John Pomfret

The Saboteur : The Aristocrat Who Became France's Most Daring Anti-Nazi Commando available in December, hardcover, Harper
The Saboteur recounts Rochefoucauld’s enthralling adventures, from escaping from a moving truck on his way to his execution to stealing Nazi limos to dressing up in a nun’s habit to sneak across German lines. Whatever the mission, whatever the dire circumstance, Rochefoucauld acquitted himself nobly, with the straight-back aplomb of a man of aristocratic breeding: James Bond before Ian Fleming conjured him.

The Written World : The Power of Stories to Shape People, History, Civilization by Martin Puchner
available nowr, hardcover, Random House
If I were teaching a history course this book could be the perfect text for the History of Literature 101. I particularly appreciated the global approach. I was introduced to the literature of countries I've never read of or explored before, such as West Africa (although I recently read and enjoyed the book Americanah,) Central America, Japan and ancient Iraq. I hope to read more books in translation and encourage all serious literature lovers to do the same. This book provides an inspiration to expand my horizons! –Cindi
Stalin’s Meteorologist : One Man’s Untold Story of Love, Life, and Death
by Olivier Rolin, translated by Ros Schwartz
available in December, hardcover, Counterpoint
by Paul Kix
44
Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. “[A] beautifully written portrait…. Chernow doesn’t gloss over Grant’s struggle with alcoholism or his tendency to trust shady operators. However, his willingness to protect the gains of freemen and to fight the KKK was an example of the moral courage he consistently displayed. This is a superb tribute to Grant, whose greatness is earning increased appreciation.” —Booklist, Starred Review
In 1934, the highly respected head of the Soviet Union's meteorology department, Alexei Feodosievich Wangenheim, was suddenly arrested without cause and sentenced to a gulag. He was violently executed in 1937 — a fact kept from his family for nearly twenty years. Olivier Rolin masterfully weaves together Alexei's story and his eventual fate, drawing on an archive of letters and delicate drawings that Wangenheim sent to his family from prison. Stalin's Meteorologist is a fascinating work that casts light on the devastating consequences of politically inspired paranoia and the mindlessness and trauma of totalitarianism — relevant revelations for our time.

The Unsettlers : In Search of the Good Life in Today's America
by Mark Sundeen
of a Nuclear War Planner by Daniel Ellsberg
available in December, hardcover, Bloomsbury
The Doomsday Machine is Ellsberg’s hair-raising insider’s account of the most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization, whose legacy — and proposed renewal under the Trump administration — threatens the very survival of humanity. No other insider has written so candidly of that long-classified history, though the policies remain fundamentally, and frighteningly, unchanged. This is a real-life Dr. Strangelove story.
available in January, paperback, Riverhead
A work of immersive journalism steeped in a distinctively American social history and sparked by a personal quest, The Unsettlers traces the search for the simple life through the stories of modern pioneers. Captivating and clear-eyed, it dares us to imagine what a sustainable, ethical, authentic future might actually look like.
Enemies and Neighbors : Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017 by Ian Black

Combining engaging narrative with historical and political analysis and cultural insights, Enemies and Neighbors is both an accessible overview and a fascinating investigation into the deeper truths of a history that continues to dominate Middle Eastern politics and diplomacy.

A More Beautiful and Terrible History : The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History by Jeanne Theoharis
available in January, hardcover, Beacon Press
The civil rights movement has become national legend, and seen as proof of the power of democracy. This fable has shuttered the movement firmly in the past, obscured the work it took, papered over the forces that stood in its way, and used it to chastise present-day movements. In this book, historian Jeanne Theoharis challenges this national myth-making, taking on many of the accepted stories of the movement to show them in a different light.

What Unites Us : Reflections on Patriotism
CONTEMPORARY
by Dan Rather
available in November, hardcover, Algonquin
At a moment of crisis over our national identity, Dan Rather has been reflecting — and writing passionately almost every day on social media — about the world we live in, what our core ideals have been and should be, and what it means to be an American. Now, in a collection of wholly original essays, the venerated television journalist celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Writing about the institutions that sustain us, such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us, such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made the United States great, Rather will bring to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world's biggest stories, and offer readers a way forward.

Focus on the offices that get the real sh*t done: state legislatures, city councils, school boards, and mayors. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a white man over 60 with an Ivy League law degree. There are half a million elected officials in the United States. Why can't you be one of them?

Loaded : A Disarming History of the Second Amendment
by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz available in January, paperback, City Lights Publishers
In Loaded, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz peels away the myths of gun culture to expose the true historical origins of the Second Amendment, exposing the racial undercurrents connecting the earliest Anglo settlers with contemporary gun proliferation, modern-day policing, and the consolidation of influence of armed white nationalists. Meticulously researched and thought-provoking throughout, this is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the historical connections between racism and gun violence in the United States.
available in January, hardcover, Skyhorse Publishing
Mathabane uses his experiences with race in both South Africa and in America to provide a fresh approach to the search for solutions to this country's No. 1 and most intractable social problem. With race dominating the news during the 2016 presidential election, in the wake of the killing of black men by the police, and growing protests on college and university campuses — Mathabane challenges both blacks and whites to use the language of Ubuntu to overcome the stereotypes, half-truths, misconceptions, and mistaken beliefs they have of each other so they can connect as human beings to achieve racial healing.

by Ursula K. Le Guin
available in December, hardcover, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
In this collection of short essays, beloved science fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin offers thoughtful and funny insights into aging, politics, creativity and responses to her readers, and life with her cat, Pard. Le Guin begins with her reactions to a questionnaire from Harvard sent before a 60th year reunion. She proposes that the questions asked may not be entirely appropriate. I loved her commentary on the profusion of curse words in written and spoken language, “Would you Please F—king Stop?” Her wit and brilliance make this book a must for anyone who might be aging. One for the Books Schooner Zodiac: Books A’ Sail 2017 by Nancy Adair
I
nterested in Literary Tourism for 2018? Look no further than Books A’ Sail. Each September Village Books and Schooner Zodiac team up to offer a three-day adventure with a famous author on board the 160-foot schooner. Only the wind knows which San Juan Islands you’ll see. Literature lovers pass each evening talking books. In 2017, featured author and fellow passenger Jim Lynch discussed his thought-provoking new novel, Before the Wind, the story of the Johannssens, a “total mess of a family” reuniting for one last sailboat race. VB Owners Paul Hanson and Kelly Evert challenged our concept of time with a companion book, Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman, and First Mate Sam led us through the ebbs and flows of Tides by Jonathan White. The 2017 passenger manifest included some of the most interesting people I’ve ever met, people willing to accept Captain Tim’s “gentle invitation” to learn how to sail a schooner. Individually, we practiced chart reading, taking the helm, and serving as bow watch.
In teams of four, we learned to hoist, lower, and flake the sails. I loved my team! While in port we relaxed, read, hiked the islands, kayaked, and enjoyed meals prepared from scratch in the Zodiac galley. I hear some people also napped. Not I. Northwest Septembers are usually beautiful. When you combine that with cool people, great readings, and stunning scenery, you’ve got yourself a literary journey for the books. Keep your eyes on the horizon for Village Books’ announcement of next year’s author! Read more about the trip and find more pictures on Nancy's blog: nancyadair.com

From the best-selling, award-winning author of 1491 and 1493 comes an incisive portrait of the two little-known 20th century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt, whose diametrically opposed views shaped our ideas about the environment, laying the groundwork for how people in the 21st century will choose to live in tomorrow’s world.

Spineless : The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone
by Juli Berwald
available in November, hardcover, Riverhead
Jellyfish are an enigma. They have no centralized brain, but they see and feel and react to their environment in complex ways. They look simple, yet their propulsion systems are so advanced engineers are just learning how to mimic them. They produce some of the deadliest toxins on the planet and yet are undeniably alluring. Long ignored by science, they may be a key to ecosystem stability.

With this book on hand you will always have an answer to questions like, "I wonder what plant this is?" or "Are these berries edible?" –Sophy

Local Music & More! Come See What We Have In Store! Folk Music Highlight
M
ost of you probably know by now that Village Books is much more than a bookstore. We value community and love supporting local writers, artists, and musicians. Here's a sampling of what you can find at Village Books:
Deakin Hicks – What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Local legends Lucas Hicks and Thomas Deakin team up for a twist on the common folk band. Accordian-led songs accompanied by clarinet create their self-described "Folk Totale." With over 20 years of musical experience, the two musicians have arrived at the strongest and most unique partnership of their careers, and the result is as rewarding for them as it is for their audience. In memory: Lucas Hicks lost his fight with cancer in early October. Village Books and Paper Dreams were honored to spend the brief time with Lucas that we had. He will be sorely missed.
The Sweet Goodbyes – The Sweet Goodbyes Folk duo The Sweet Goodbyes has been germinating since Lisa Harmon and Amber Darland decided to team up in 2015. Two years later, they've finally released their first album. Lush vocal harmonies are the standout here, and the musical chemistry between them is undeniable. Put this CD in your car, take off for the mountains, and see if you ever want it to end.
Amber Darland – Truce In addition to being one half of the aforementioned duo The Sweet Goodbyes, Amber Darland also releases solo projects. Truce is her third full-length album. Darland specializes in folk-pop with sweet and simple melodies you'll want to sing along to. Her songwriting shines against spare production, showing that sometimes all you need is a girl and a guitar to put a spring in your step.
Putumayo Holiday Music Since 1993, Putumayo has been bringing authentic music from around the world into its collection. Come take a look at their holiday offerings, including Jewish Celebration, Acoustic Christmas, French Christmas, and more.
Want us to carry your music at Village Books? Send an email to consignment@villagebooks.com or go to villagebooks.com and click "Consignment Program" under the Writer's Corner tab.
MUSIC Makes a Great Gift! In addition to a variety of local music, you'll find more holiday, Putamayo, and NPR music at Village Books. 56 Winter 2017-2018

Featuring interviews with players and creators, this is the story of how innovators transformed an idea into a revolution.

Middle Readers The Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell available now, hardcover, Hodder Children’s Books
My favorite thing about Cressida Cowell’s writing is that she combines suspense and silliness, fantasy and fundamental truths. This first magical installment in a new series from the author who brought you Hiccup and his zany dragon Toothless will have you by turns giggling, biting your nails, and shedding a tear or two. –Hannah

With its realistic sweetness and wonderful readability, this book is bound to bring joy to readers, both young and young-at-heart. –Hannah

Whichwood
Green
available in Novemberer, hardcover, Penguin
available in January, hardcover, Random House
Tahereh Mafi has been one of my favorite authors ever since her debut novel, Shatter Me, hit shelves in 2011. Now, Mafi is back with Whichwood, the sequel to 2016’s best selling Furthermore. The novel follows Laylee, a girl who spends her days and nights washing dead bodies. She lives an extremely solitary life, and finds her young heart already hardened. But when her health begins to take a turn for the worse, Laylee finds herself in the company of new friends who want to help her. In Whichwood, Mafi has woven a lovely, beautiful, enchanting Persian-inspired fantasy novel that is perfect for all ages. –Hannah M. age 19
It’s hard to describe exactly what makes Green so brilliant. The novel follows Dave Greenfeld, one of a handful of white kids in his school, as he nears his first year of high school. His struggles to find friends and keep the ones he has with the stresses of adolescence, impending tests deciding his future, and having to decide between doing what’s right and staying safe all against the backdrop of the very real racism that exists in the America he lives in. Though it’s written about a 12-year-old in the 1990s, Green's consequences on modern society are astronomical. –Nich V. age 17

The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody
available in November, hardcover, Simon Pulse
The Chaos of Standing Still encompasses all the things I love about YA books in one lovely adventure — strong emotion, spontaneous adventure and realistic characters that hook you in. Follow Ryn a quietly compulsive teen who is traveling to San Francisco until she gets trapped in the Denver Airport during a snowstorm. It's nearing New Year's Eve which is the anniversary of her best friend's death. All she has left is one unread message that she can't convince herself to read. Follow Ryn on this journey of moving on, making friends and starting anew in this funny and smile-inducing book. –Sam T. age 17

Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely
available in January, hardcover, Hachette
From debut author Lyndsay Ely comes a unique new dystopian novel unlike any other. Set in the future after a Second Civil War divides the United States into a dangerous land and leaves the West wild once more, Gunslinger Girl is fast paced and brilliant. The world is dark, twisted, and thoroughly developed. I wouldn’t want to live there, but it sure is interesting. This book follows Pity Jones as she flees a forced marriage and is offered a new life in a dangerous and lawless city, Cessation. This book is definitely one to look out for. –Gretal M. age 18
The Speaker
Sea of Ink and Gold Series #2 by Traci Chee
available in November, hardcover, G.P. Putman's Sons
The amazing sequel to The Reader, the story continues the quest of Sefia and Archer, who are now on the offense against the Guard, but as they begin to make a name for themselves, destiny and curse soon become intertwined. The amount of suspense and drama around Archer made this tale extremely immersive and I can't wait for the next book. –Brayden W. age 17

The Becoming of Noah Shaw
Love, Hate, & Other Filters
(The Shaw Confessions #1)
by Samira Ahmed
by Michelle Hodkin
available in January, hardcover, Soho Teen
available in November, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
Timely and thought provoking, Love, Hate & Other Filters is the story of an IndianAmerican Muslim teen growing up and dealing with Islamophobia in modern America. Maya Aziz is an aspiring filmmaker torn between what her parents want for her future and what she herself wants. Things are difficult enough for her and only get worse when a suicide bomber strikes in a city near where she lives, and the primary suspect shares her last name. This book is very relevant, and as both an important and good book, I definitely recommend it. –Gretal M. age 18
I have been waiting to get my hands on a copy of The Becoming of Noah Shaw ever since the book was announced all the way back in 2015. The first book in a planned trilogy, The Becoming of Noah Shaw picks up right where the Mara Dyer series left off and answers the question: what happens after happily ever after? A tumultuous and mind-bending ride, this book surpassed all of my expectations. It was a blast to be back with Noah, Mara, Daniel, and the rest of the crew, as well as to meet some new faces. Fans of the Mara Dyer series are in for a treat—and everyone else is as well! I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Definitely recommended for older age groups. –Hannah M. age 19
Very, Very, Very Dreadful: The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 by Albert Marrin
non-fiction
available in January, hardcover, Knopf
This book goes in depth about a topic in our world history that very often is just skimmed over or forgotten altogether. It also goes into what a similar scenario would look like in our modern world and what people believed about the flu at a time when people didn’t know anything about viruses. This is an interesting read that combines history and science. –Kirsten N. age 17

This book was just what I needed to read after I saw the Wonder Woman movie this summer. It's a completely original story and I loved Leigh Bardugo's rendition of Diana Prince. I'm not even crazy about super hero stories, and I ate this book up! Don't miss it! –Lauren S.

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
available now, hardcover, Atheneum Books
Gripping, discussion-worthy verse book about a teen contemplating revenge for his murdered brother. As Will rides the elevator out of his apartment, figures from his past, all victims and/or perpetrators of gun violence, speak to him, giving voice and perspective to the cycle of gun violence in his neighborhood. A powerful addition to the YA canon. –Trevor
Mr. 60%
by Clete Barrett Smith available now, hardcover, Crown Books
I knew going into it that Mr. 60% was going to be a departure for Clete Smith. I was prepared, or so I thought. This is not your run-of the-mill troubled teen drama. Matt Nolan is barely hanging on as a student and high school drug dealer. The weight that is on his shoulders is so much more than any teen should have to bear, but he's trying. And failing. Enter Amanda and no, it's not what you think. There are no clichés here. There is nothing typical about this story. It's raw and it's painful. Smith shows us that he can get real in this sucker punch to the gut of a novel. –Claire Join us for a FREE EVENT with author

Sparrow has always had a difficult time making friends. She would always rather have stayed home on the weekends with her mother, an affluent IT executive at a Manhattan bank, reading, or watching the birds, than playing with other kids. And that's made school a lonely experience for her. But when the one teacher who really understood her — Mrs. Wexler, the school librarian, a woman who let her eat her lunch in the library office, a woman who shared her passion for novels and knew just the ones she'd love — is killed in a freak car accident, Sparrow's world unravels.

NOVEMBER Wednesday, November 8, 7pm BRENDA FANTROY-JOHNSON –Imagine Me
Memoir!
Imagine Me is a riveting story of a young black girl’s journey growing up in the early ‘60s. The setting is Detroit where dreams are formed from life experiences within a city ghetto. A coming-of-age story set during the height of the civil rights movement, this was a time of music, baseball, and fishing on the Detroit river, a time of developing and discovering identity. This is a story of strength and commitment to fulfill her mother’s directive, proving to herself even through domestic violence, drugs, and alcohol abuse – that faith can get you out and enough faith can overcome fear. This is a journey of hope and dreams fulfilled.

Everyone thinks high school drug dealer Matt Nolan is a deadbeat. But no one knows that he is actually caring for his terminally ill uncle. Clete Barrett Smith was born and raised in Bellingham and spent many hours of his youth poking around the Village Books shelves. His first novel, the humorous middle grade sci-fi story Aliens on Vacation, was published in 2011 by Disney-Hyperion, followed by two more books in the series — Alien on a Rampage and Aliens in Disguise — as well as Magic Delivery, a story about magic Halloween costumes. In May of 1906, Ernest Leffingwell and Ejnar Mikkelsen, co-commanders of the Anglo American Polar Expedition, sailed from Victoria, British Columbia, to determine if there was land north of Alaska. The following spring they barely survived their trip on the pack ice off the northern coast of Alaska. However, between 1906 and 1914, including nine summers and six winters, Leffingwell defined and mapped the geography and geology of northeastern Alaska, (a significant portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) including the coastline, and he studied the formation of permafrost. He made 31 trips by sled and small boat, and pitched a tent 380 times, in the process covering over 4500 miles. Along with her own passion for the Arctic, Janet R. Collins spent 30 years as the director and map librarian.

KAREN MCLEAN DADE will share The 25th Hour, by Christopher Donaldson, Jr. Join us as Dr. Karen McLean Dade presents the work of incarcerated poet Christopher Donaldson, Jr. With one out of 100 people incarcerated in the United States, it is likely that many of us on the outside are connected in some way to those imprisoned. The 25th Hour builds on that connectedness in sharing the poetry of a young, incarcerated black male who beckons readers of his poetry to recognize the human connection between us all, thus the need for those on the outside to work for greater justice for those on the inside. Sunday, December 3, 4pm Slideshow! JANEY BENNETT –The Fantastic Seashell of the Mind: The Architecture of Mark Mills
From1944 to 1948, Mark Mills apprenticed to Frank Lloyd Wright. When he heard Wright say that seashells are nature’s perfect architecture, Mark made that idea an element of his life’s work. As seashells shape themselves to meet the needs of their inhabitants, so Mark designed structural roof systems that sheltered his homes and framed the lives of the owners. An architectural engineer before he trained with Wright, Mark Mills blended structural principles with forms from nature to create his own visionary designs. Janey Bennett is an architectural historian and award- winning novelist (The Pale Surface of Things). She first wrote about Mark Mills’ architecture in 1993 for The Journal of Taliesin Fellows. Friday, January 12, 7pm GABE RIGGS –Punk Love Foucault : A Memoir Punk Love Foucault gives voice to the borderland existence that is transgender life in a society driven by sex and selfdoubt no matter who you are. It is a coming-of-age story of a transgender youth who rebels against even the meaning of transgender. Within this atypical circumstance, it critically engages in the existential underpinnings that propel all of our relationships, from the familial to the strange. Instead of just confessing how hard it is to be "abnormal," this memoir is about how hard it is, period, to be alive in a world that isn't ready to accept anyone. Gabe Riggs is an aspiring botanist who grew up entangled within a complex social world. They spend all the time they can with plants, as far as possible from the daily judgment and hate that accompanies modern life. They are happily betrothed to Gavin Hadley and helping to raise two wonderful children.
Saturday, January 13, 7pm Group Poetry Reading! –Nasty Women Poets:
Poetry
An Unapologetic Anthology of Subversive Verse
This timely collection of poems speaks not just to the current political climate and the man who is responsible for its title, but to the stereotypes and expectations women have faced dating back to Eve, and to the long history of women resisting those limitations. The nasty women poets included here talk back to the men who created those limitations, honor foremothers who offered models of resistance and survival, rewrite myths, celebrate their own sexuality and bodies, and the girlhoods they survived. They sing, swear, swagger, and celebrate, and stake claim to life and art on their own terms.

Saturday, February 10, 7pm DENISE CHANTERELLE DUBOIS –Self-Made Woman: A Memoir Denise DuBois’ transformation into a woman wasn’t easy. Born as a boy into a working-class Polish American Milwaukee family, she faced daunting hurdles: a domineering father, a gritty 1960s neighborhood with no understanding of gender nonconformity, trouble in school, and a childhood so haunted by deprivation that neckbone soup was a staple. Terrified of revealing her inner self, DuBois lurched through alcoholism, drug dealing and addiction, car crashes, dangerous sex, and prison time. Dennis barreled from Wisconsin to California, Oregon, Canada, Costa Rica, New York, Bangkok, and Hawaii on a joyless ride. Defying all expectations, DuBois didn’t crash and burn. Embracing her identity as a woman, she remade herself. Writing with resolute honesty and humor, she confronts both her past and her present to tell an American story of self-discovery. “When I’m dealt a bad day or find myself contemplating the what if ’s of my future, I am so glad that the biggest what if no longer plagues me or breaks my stride. I’m Denise. That in and of itself makes me feel like fortune’s favorite daughter.” There is no charge for most Village Books Literature Live events. Event costs are offset by customer book purchases; in order to maintain our robust program, we urge you to purchase those event books that interest you.
