Dear Reader, What a journey 2020 has been. We’ve always prided ourselves as a business on our ability to think creatively and find win-win solutions to any challenge we’ve faced. That ability has been put to the test this year. As we begin to think about the winter holidays, we’re so thankful for you, Dear Reader. We know that your support is critical to our success. That has never been more true than now. According to Business Insider, billionaires in the US increased their net worth by $637 billion dollars during the months of March through June this year. A certain online retail mogul alone accounted for $48 billion of that increase. We’ve never measured our success in billions of dollars. We’ve measured it in smiles of families as they come through the doors of the store. We’ve measured it in waves from porches as Kelly drops off a home delivery. We’ve measured it in laughs in the greeting card aisles, siblings reading to each other in the kids section, authors hosted in store and in virtual events. This year, we’re also measuring success in the staff members we were able to retain, employ, and recall during and after the spring shutdown. We are always proud of our staff for their knowledge and enthusiasm for any task at hand but we are truly grateful for all of the hard work they have put in to improve the customer’s experience both in store and online. We are always grateful for our community but I know we’re counting our blessings a little extra this year. Thank you and a happy holiday season to you and yours.

Giving Tree Books for Local Kids and Families in Need For over two decades, Village Books has provided books for thousands of local children who would not otherwise receive them during the holiday season –with your help and kind generosity. Last year alone, we gave books to almost 1,200 children. How can you help? Stop by our Fairhaven and Lynden locations to select a tag from the Giving Tree then match it with a book of your choice. The books you purchase for Giving Tree recipients will be offered at a 20% discount, and will be distributed to children through numerous community organizations, in the weeks before Christmas.

The annual dazzling display of lighted trucks, cars, floats, wagons, and farm equipment is a go–but with a 2020 twist! The entrants will be parked along the south side of Front Street (from approx. 3rd to 17th) and spectators can drive one-way to the west in the north lane or walk the route via sidewalk—taking health protocols into account, of course. Village Books & Paper Dreams Owner & Gift Buyer Kelly Evert Shares Some of Her Favorite Holiday Finds The holiday season is fast approaching and the excitement is building! The joyful lights, traditional carols that bring back memories, cookies and cakes, curling up next to a fire, and enjoying the quiet of the dark are all part of the season. This year will be different for most of us. We will miss friends and family with whom we would normally spend time. At Village Books and Paper Dreams, we are striving to make this year easier for you, at least when it comes to gift giving. There is something special about receiving a simple card in the mail–the extra time taken to write the card to someone we are thinking of makes all the difference in a loved ones day. How heartwarming it is to see the familiar handwriting across the miles. One of my favorite letterpress card designers is Saturn Press located on Swan's Island just off the coast of Maine. Their holiday boxed cards are elegant and of exceptional quality. We cannot go through the holiday season without thinking about trimming the tree. I spend all year looking for ornaments from around the world to bring to you in the Pacific Northwest. Spokane-based Old World Christmas always has an extensive collection of beautifully handcrafted, glass ornaments. Another favorite is Cody Foster, located in Valentine, in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska. They always create delightful and often whimsical ornaments. Where else are you going to find a cocktail shrimp, Krampus, and a Willie Nelson ornament all in one place?

Earthlings was a great reminder to never judge a book by its cover. –Questen

In this beautifully written memoir, physician Jim deMaine presents stories, lessons learned from patients and caregivers who taught him about dying. Dr. Jim deMaine spent nearly 40 years caring for severely ill patients and witnessing their final days as a pulmonary and critical care specialist. His often dramatic experiences with patients near death led him to blog, then speak about their stories, with special attention to the issue of advocacy for patients unable to speak for themselves.

Norton is a life-long amateur painter, published poet, and peace activist. Now an ordained Zen priest, she mentors Zen students in the Red Cedar Zen Community in Bellingham.
