Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader, What a journey 2020 has been. We’ve always prided ourselves as a business on our ability to think creatively and find win-win solutions to any challenge we’ve faced. That ability has been put to the test this year. As we begin to think about the winter holidays, we’re so thankful for you, Dear Reader. We know that your support is critical to our success. That has never been more true than now. According to Business Insider, billionaires in the US increased their net worth by $637 billion dollars during the months of March through June this year. A certain online retail mogul alone accounted for $48 billion of that increase. We’ve never measured our success in billions of dollars. We’ve measured it in smiles of families as they come through the doors of the store. We’ve measured it in waves from porches as Kelly drops off a home delivery. We’ve measured it in laughs in the greeting card aisles, siblings reading to each other in the kids section, authors hosted in store and in virtual events. This year, we’re also measuring success in the staff members we were able to retain, employ, and recall during and after the spring shutdown. We are always proud of our staff for their knowledge and enthusiasm for any task at hand but we are truly grateful for all of the hard work they have put in to improve the customer’s experience both in store and online. We are always grateful for our community but I know we’re counting our blessings a little extra this year. Thank you and a happy holiday season to you and yours.

Thank You for Supporting Local Reminding YOU of the importance of supporing locally owned businesses is akin to preaching to the choir. Look at you now—taking the time to read these words and peruse this publication for giving ideas. You are an independent bookstore shopper. You already undertand that you vote with your dollars every day by deciding to shop locally. You know that your purchases support a local tax base which funds roads, schools, and first responders. You appreciate that our philanthropic efforts are community-based. And we understand that you have choices and want to say THANK YOU for choosing us. It's not just bookstores! Your local clothing store, arts and crafts store, grocery store—all are local businesses who help to create community. With local variety, our city stays unique and more vibrant—the livable place we love and want it to stay. November 28th is Small Business Saturday– a day dedicated to reminding consumers to keep thier purchasing dollars in their community. Not that you need reminding, and for that, please know that you are making a difference and appreciated.

Whimsey & Quality Shopping With Kelly
Village Books & Paper Dreams Owner & Gift Buyer Kelly Evert Shares Some of Her Favorite Holiday Finds The holiday season is fast approaching and the excitement is building! The joyful lights, traditional carols that bring back memories, cookies and cakes, curling up next to a fire, and enjoying the quiet of the dark are all part of the season. This year will be different for most of us. We will miss friends and family with whom we would normally spend time. At Village Books and Paper Dreams, we are striving to make this year easier for you, at least when it comes to gift giving. There is something special about receiving a simple card in the mail–the extra time taken to write the card to someone we are thinking of makes all the difference in a loved ones day. How heartwarming it is to see the familiar handwriting across the miles. One of my favorite letterpress card designers is Saturn Press located on Swan's Island just off the coast of Maine. Their holiday boxed cards are elegant and of exceptional quality. We cannot go through the holiday season without thinking about trimming the tree. I spend all year looking for ornaments from around the world to bring to you in the Pacific Northwest. Spokane-based Old World Christmas always has an extensive collection of beautifully handcrafted, glass ornaments. Another favorite is Cody Foster, located in Valentine, in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska. They always create delightful and often whimsical ornaments. Where else are you going to find a cocktail shrimp, Krampus, and a Willie Nelson ornament all in one place?

Substance & Style More Shopping With Kelly! Every year we know when the Frasier Fir candles have arrived—even the boxes they come shipped in smell good! Mountain fresh, the scented Frasier Fir Candle enhances any decor or makes an elegant hostess gift. It fills your home with crisp, just-cut forest fragrance that evokes Christmas memories. The non-metal wick provides a clean, pure burn time of approximately 15 hours. A new product for us this year is KAVU outdoor wear. Kavu creates stylish bags, wallets, and other accessories that are absolutely perfect for the outdoor enthusiast. KAVU is also an aviation acronym for “clear above visibility unlimited,” when there isn’t a cloud in the sky and you can see to the horizon. Clear skies may not always be true in the Pacific Northwest, but that guiding philosophy means treating every day like it’s special, and then getting out and doing whatever invigorates you and makes you smile. I couldn't agree more—the sling pack with adjustable rope shoulder strap is perfect for a day on Galbraith or to dinner in town. All of us at Village Books and Paper Dreams are always happy to help when it comes to the gift giving department. New this year are our customized gift boxes! Our team of personal shoppers will thoughtfully hand pick the perfect gift, whether it be for the friend who needs a pampering gift with locally made soap and a good book. Or for the tea lover who gets a collection of Republic of Tea with a mug. For the aunt who loves to cook and is on the other side of the country, a cookbook, apron and perhaps barrelaged maple syrup by local Woodinville Whiskey Co. Or a Hanukkah inspired box with toys or books for every night. The possibilities are limitless. We ship within the United States, but do get those orders in soon. New Fiction The Prophets
Magic Lessons :
by Robert Jones, Jr available in January, hardcover, G. P. Putnam's Sons
Robert Jones, Jr. summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike, from the calculating slave master to the long line of women that surround them, women who have carried the soul of the plantation on their shoulders. As tensions build and the weight of centuries culminates in a climactic reckoning, The Prophets masterfully reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth. The Prequel to Practical Magic
by Alice Hoffman
available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
At last, Hoffman takes us all the way back to the beginning of the Owens witches with the story of Maria. She is one of the best witches I have ever read; complex, human, strong, beautiful. And Hoffman writes love so well—about its beauty and about its darkness when it becomes twisted. If you enjoyed Practical Magic, then you will love Magic Lessons. –Claire
Once We Were Here
Earthlings
by Sayaka Murata available now, hardcover, Grove
If 2020 has left you full of misanthropy, woe, and disquietude, then this the read for you. Despite very off-color and disturbing scenes, I couldn't put it down. If this review has left you slightly appalled, but still in search of a book about alienation from society, I recommend Murata's Convenience Store Woman, which catapulted her to international fame. Earthlings was a great reminder to never judge a book by its cover. –Questen
A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers
available in December, hardcover, The Unnamed Press
Food critic Dorothy Daniels is discerning, meticulous, and very, very smart. But there is something within Dorothy that’s different from everyone else, and having suppressed it long enough, she starts to embrace what makes Dorothy uniquely, terrifyingly herself. A satire of early foodieism, a critique of how gender is defined, and a showcase of virtuoso storytelling, Summers’ A Certain Hunger introduces us to the food world’s most charming psychopath and an exciting new voice in fiction.

by Christopher Cosmos
available in November, hardcover, Arcade
In 1940, in a small village nestled against the radiant waters of the Aegean Sea, we find Alexei and his best friend Costa, who were both born on the same night 18 years earlier and have been like brothers ever since. Now, like all the other young men in their village and throughout Greece, they will leave their homes to bravely fight for their country. Before they go, Alexei asks Philia, the girl that he's loved his entire life, to marry him, which sets into motion the events which will change the lives of these three and their family and friends forever.
A Great Gift... Hamnet
by Maggie O'Farrell "Hamnet was Shakespeare's little boy that died at an early age. Hamnet's twin sister did not. This is true. What we are not sure of is what happened when young Hamnet passed and his mother, Agnes, was left to take care of his funeral and to continue to care for her daughters. Her playwright husband was far from home, in London. The grief and isolation this mother must have felt can only be imagined. And Maggie O'Farrell does a brilliant job of telling this tale. So good in fact, she has won the 2020 Women's Prize for Fiction." –Kelly E.

by Susanna Clarke
available now, hardcover, Knopf
"Perfect— everything I want a novel to be!" –Laura P.
Book of Hidden Wonders by Polly Crosby
available now, hardcover, Park Row
Romilly Kemp and her eccentric painter father lead happy but sheltered lives in a ramshackle mansion in the English countryside. When her father finds fame with a series of children’s books starring Romilly as the main character, everything changes: exotic foods appear on the table, her father appears on TV, and strangers appear at their door, convinced the books will lead them to a precious prize. But as time passes, Romilly’s father becomes increasingly suspicious of the outside world until, before her eyes, he begins to disappear within himself. She returns to his illustrations, looking for a way to connect with her ailing father, and finds a series of clues he’s left just for her. Written with tremendous heart, The Book of Hidden Wonders is an unforgettable story about growing up, facing mortality and discovering the hidden wonders that make us who we are. –Paul
A writer on a Berlin fellowship slowly feels he is being watched while becoming obsessed with a grotesque police drama. After an encounter with the show's Quentin Tarantino-cumRichard Spencer director, he becomes deluded with the idea that he is in a psychic battle with him and his growing movement of alt-right henchmen. In short--a less edgy, more philosophical Fight Club which takes place in the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election. –Questen
The Grammarians by Cathleen Schine
available in November, paperback, Picador
From the author compared to Nora Ephron and Nancy Mitford, not to mention Jane Austen, comes a novel celebrating the beauty, mischief, and occasional treachery of language. This playful, joyful novel about word-obsessed twin sisters who go to war with each other over possession of a prized family heirloom: a dictionary. A dazzling comedy of sisterly and linguistic manners, a revelation of the delights and stresses of intimacy, The Grammarians is the work of one of our great comic novelists at her very best.
Mystery Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz
available in November, hardcover, Harper
Featuring his famous literary detective Atticus Pund and Susan Ryeland, hero of the worldwide bestseller Magpie Murders, a complex literary thriller with echoes of Agatha Christie from New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz. Brilliantly clever, relentlessly suspenseful, full of twists that will keep readers guessing with each revelation and clue, Moonflower Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage English crime fiction from one of its greatest masterminds, Anthony Horowitz.

Before the Ruins by Victoria Gosling

Debut author! A gripping, multilayered debut in the tradition of Paula Hawkins and Tana French about four friends, an abandoned manor, and one fateful night that will follow them for the rest of their lives. That summer, there were four of them, all on the cusp of adulthood, whiling away the hours in a deserted manor house with a rich, sordid history. When the group learns that a diamond necklace, stolen fifty years ago, might still be somewhere on the manor grounds, the Game—half treasure hunt, half friendly deception—begins. But the Game becomes much bigger than the necklace, growing to encompass years of secrets, lies, and, ultimately, one terrible betrayal. For fans who love a good mystery about people behaving badly.

The Arrest
by Jonathan Lethem available in November, hardcover, Ecco

There he assists the butcher and delivers the food grown by his sister, Maddy, at her organic farm. But then his college friend, Todbaum shows up in an extraordinary vehicle: a retrofitted tunnel-digger powered by a nuclear reactor. Todbaum has spent the Arrest smashing his way across a fragmented and phantasmagorical United States, trailing enmities all the way. Plopping back into the siblings’ life with his usual odious panache, his motives are entirely unclear. Can it be that Todbaum wants to produce one more extravaganza? Whatever he’s up to, it may fall to Journeyman to stop him.

Life Stories Red Comet : The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath by Heather Clark
A Promised Land by Barack Obama
available now, hardcover, Knopf
available in November, hardcover, Crown Publishing
Determined not to read Plath’s work as if her every act was a harbinger of her tragic fate, Clark evokes a culture in transition, in the shadow of the atom bomb and the Holocaust, as she explores Plath’s world: her early relationships and determination not to become a conventional woman; her troubles at the hands of an unenlightened mental-health industry; her Cambridge years and thunderclap meeting with Ted Hughes, and much more.
In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world. This beautifully written and powerful book captures Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

Combining vivid animal encounters with philosophical reflections and the latest news from biology, Metazoa reveals that even in our hi-tech, AI-driven times, there is no understanding minds without understanding nerves, muscles, and our active bodies. The result is a story as rich and vibrant as life itself, one that explains the mystery of animal consciousness in accessible and riveting prose.

Whenever I start a series and fall in love with it, I always dread the ending. Is it going to be satisfying? Will I be disappointed? How can this possibly come together and make sense? I am THRILLED beyond belief that Lightbringer exceeded my wildest dreams. It was a joy to read, and even though I wept through the last quarter of it, Legrand earned my tears. What a masterpiece of a series. Enjoy the ride! –Lauren
