Cold Spring Harbor’s Newest Tech Start-up Cold Spring Harbor’s Main Street is home to a disruptive new technology company that is quickly earning accolades from large beta testing clients and other tech industry insiders. Designed to help people make difficult decisions faster, easier and more reliably, Teedot’s suite of software applications is used by some of the biggest companies in America. Split off from its former
parent company, Kinetic Fin, and occupying the same cool space at 128 Main Street, Teedot is in high demand by thought leaders who mandate results. Teedot's enterprise-grade software has been successfully piloted at large organizations like Cisco, Frontier, Citrix, and Kraft, who have shown a 70% increase in the speed of critical business initiatives and more than $100M in new sales pipeline. The reason? When even the shortest planning conversations use Teedot, teams go dramatically faster, connect to 1000 times as much data and learn from 1000 times as many people. As Teedot’s Chief Executive Officer, Matt Johnston, says, “how tremendously would your business results improve if you could securely invite as many as 1000 new people to your next important meeting, instantly assimilate their best, most relevant thoughts and see productivity increase the more everyone talked at once?” It sounds intriguing to me, a meeting where productivity increases the more everyone talks at once! But How? Designed to deal with the fastest growing and most pervasive segments of “Big Data,” Teedot operates at the intersection of cognitive computing, social business, big data decision-making and next-generation smart apps. The first of Teedot’s main products, the Teedot Platform, is a recommendation engine and intelligent

application service that integrates with existing business data systems like Salesforce, Google Apps, or Amazon EC2. It is a social business application for smartphones, tablets, and collaboration platforms like WebEx Social, Trello, and Google Hangout. This completely new approach to Big Data and Analytics, which has been estimated as a $200B software and services market, and has already produced a few breakout success stories like MapR, Cloudera, and Splunk. Teedot seems well-poised to be next. Teedot's near-term roadmap includes a breakthrough user experience in its native iOS and Android applications, a major upgrade to its machine-learning engine, and completely new types of business data integrations. These innovations will enable both a revolutionary shift in how front-line business leaders quickly and securely select and include big data in their decisions without IT support, as well as industry-transforming possibilities for Teedotenabled leaders. If you think your company might be suffering from a partner and strategy bureaucracy or think you might be experiencing big data waste, register for a Teedot demonstration at https://t.ag. The Teedot team is ready to help you learn more about social business and the future of very smart apps.

As I open my door this morning, I am already looking forward to getting back into my warm bed later in the day. Walking to my car I find myself questioning why anybody would want to live where it’s 10 degrees and icy. I fumble my way through the snow and tuck my hands deep into my pockets to keep warm. As my car warms up, which seems to take forever, I once again tell myself to ask for an auto start next Christmas. As I put the radio on my favorite station, I head into the village for my morning coffee. I’ve been doing this for so long, that as I am pulling into the drive-through, my coffee is already being made. As I make my way out to Wall Street, I immediately start seeing people that I know; friends, neighbors, a beep here, a wave there. The more I drive and the more I see, I begin to realize the uniqueness of where we live. How many people live on an island surrounded by beaches and villages that are each unique in their own way? It’s something that can’t be duplicated anywhere else in the world. It’s why we cry the blues in the cold and anxiously await the spring. To see it all come alive again. I, for one, hate the cold, but I do love Long Island and all it has to offer. There’s no place that I would rather be. Stay warm and

Cover Artist Daniel Del Orfano
Daniel Del Orfano — Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Daniel decided to stay close to his roots and attend Dowling College in Oakdale, NY. There he received his BFA in Art Education and was teaching full time by the fall of 2001. After teaching at the prestigious Knox Boarding School, Daniel took a position in the public school system where he taught art to children of all ages. Though extremely rewarding, this was not his true calling. It was at this time Daniel decided to divert his attention from teaching art to creating art, and in the summer of 2005, he formed The Renaissance Workshop. Specializing in all things art, The Renaissance Workshop gave Daniel the opportunity to expand his horizons, creatively.
As demand for commissioned work increased, Daniel began developing his expressive style, implementing techniques that emphasized texture over realism. Though the work depicted realistic scenes, the effects produced an almost ethereal feeling. The imagery began to take a back seat to the memory of which the image represented. Daniel Del Orfano’s work depicts life, not as it may be, but more as it is remembered- a snapshot, not of a particular moment but of an overall memory. Daniel’s work is available for purchase at LaMantia Gallery - 127 Main Street, Northport, NY. (lamantiagallery.com)

Lighthouses, Legends and Lore
When we think of lighthouses, all sorts of images come to mind. Perhaps you picture a man of the sea smoking his pipe while looking over the vast ocean, or perhaps you see treacherous storms, or a life of loneliness and solitude; mystery and intrigue. Some people envision a ghost, the spirit of a previous lighthouse keeper who could not leave his watch, and who remains at his former post indefinitely. Are lighthouses truly haunted? If so, why? Or is it our imaginations conjuring up romanticized visions of days gone by? I've had the privilege of having private tours of several of Long Island's lighthouses because I've written about them throughout the years. Eaton's Neck Lighthouse, Montauk Point, Huntington, Fire Island, and my personal favorite, Execution Rocks Lighthouse. The Huntington Lighthouse, as well as the Eaton's Neck Lighthouse, I have visited and written about in my earlier books on Huntington, where the focus was on preserving history, not ghosts. Do I think they could be haunted? Sure, but I'd have to do a thorough investigation to really find out. The Fire Island Lighthouse and Execution Rocks, were places I wrote about for my Ghosts of Long Island books. Both are presumably haunted. At Fire Island, tales of pirating, illegal rum-running and shipwrecks abound, as do tales of ghostly phenomenon. Some claim to have heard footsteps on the metal steps, and music and moaning coming from the tower.

The abandoned Execution Rocks lighthouse is located in the Long Island Sound off Kings Point. As the legend has been told, during the Battle of Long Island in the Revolutionary War, British soldiers brought "American rebels" to Execution Rocks in order to put them to death. It has been said that the British secretly took them to this island of rocks and beat them, then drove spikes into the rock reef, and then chained them to the rocks at low tide. As the tide rose, the American prisoners drowned beneath the icy waters. Other tales reveal that many of the prisoners met their fate by hungry sharks that happened upon a free meal. As if this wasn’t enough, the newly captured were chained next to the skeletal remains of their former comrades…a way of torturing them mentally before they met their own watery demise. It is said that to this day the ghosts of the condemned prisoners remain. Photo – Execution Rocks Lighthouse. Six-time, award winning author Kerriann Flanagan Brosky, best known for her Ghosts of Long Island books, has been featured in a number of publications, and has appeared on radio and television. She is the co-host of the blogtalk radio show, “The Kerriann & Joe Show – Spirit Connection.” Her debut novel, The Medal, a work of inspirational fiction is her latest book.

Setting Goals One thing that I feel is really important to being as fit and healthy as you can be is to set goals. January is a new beginning of a new year and I think many of us become goal oriented as we foresee what 2014 will bring. When my clients start my bootcamp and nutrition program, I ask them to set goals, including body fat, clean eating and physical goals. Your ability to succeed at being fit and healthy is increased dramatically when you have a goal that you are working towards. For instance, I have always wanted to run the NYC marathon and I decided in March 2013 that I was going to do it that year. I set the goal and followed through by signing up for it that day so I would be committed immediately. Since I ran it, fourteen of my clients have now committed to running it this year! Many of them had called me to let me know that they wanted a solid goal that they could work toward and start right away. Now we are working on weekly and monthly goals to achieve along the way, which will lead up to success and the ultimate goal of running the NYC marathon in November. Your goals are based on what is important to you. Of course you don’t have to plan to run 26.2 miles. You pick the goal you want and then map out the plan of how you are going to get here. Here are some steps you can take to set a goal and achieve it: 1. Set your goal: lose weight, tone your muscles, drop a clothing size. These are the goals I usually hear. They are fine, but I recommend adding a physical goal so you can look at all different aspects of making progress. The physical goals will also
14 • village connection • february 2014
help you get to these other goals. For example: being able to do 20 push-ups on your toes or being able to do 20 full sit ups. Not only will these help you get to your weight loss goal but they will help you feel positive and accomplished and will reassure you that you are moving in the right direction. 2. Determine a date that you want to reach that goal. Be realistic with your time frames. Set dates for achieving the smaller goals that will lead you to the big goal. For example: I will be able to do 5 push ups on my toes in 2 weeks. 3. Make a road map of how you will get to the goal: exercising and eating clean must be on your daily list of things to do. Take out your calender and write in what days you will work out, what type of exercise you will do to reach your goal, and what you will eat each day. For example: M/W/F, I will do as many push-ups on my toes as possible then continue on my knees for 10 more repetitions. 4. Re-evaluate your goals: I re-evaluate my goals every one to two weeks to see if I am on track or if I need to change my “road map” to get me there. 5. Achieve your goal: once you achieve it, it’s time to celebrate! Then, to avoid slacking off, set a new goal and start the process all over again; making this one bigger and better than ever! We’ve all seen or heard the commercial in which a person is lying on the floor in pain, stating in agony, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” Unfortunately, this scenario, especially for older adults, is more realistic than you might know. Each year, one-third of adults age 65 and older will fall, causing moderate to severe injuries, including hip fractures and head injuries, and can increase the risk of early death. Less than fiftypercent of these individuals even speak with their healthcare providers about falling or their fear of falling. One of the reasons behind this reluctance to discuss this issue is that fear of falling results in avoidance of functional activities such as walking, shopping, and exercising. But today, sophisticated help is available. To help determine if you may be at risk for falling, take this simple Balance Self-Test and answer the following questions with a “yes” or “no”: 1. Have you fallen more than once in the past year? 2. Do you take medications for two or more of the following: heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, anxiety, and depression? 3. Do you feel dizzy or unsteady if you make sudden changes in movement such as bending down or quickly turning? 4. Do you have black-outs or seizures? 5. Have you experienced a stroke or other neurological problem that has affected your balance? 6. Do you experience numbness or loss of sensation in your legs and/or feet? 7. Do you use a walker or wheel chair, or do you need assistance to get around? 8. Are you inactive (answer yes if you do not participate in a regular form of exercise, such as walking or exercising 20-30 minutes at least three times a week) 9. Do you feel unsteady when you are walking, climbing stairs? 10. Do you have difficulty sitting down or rising from a seated or
16 • village connection • february 2014
lying position? These might seem like simple questions however they are extremely important. If you answered “yes” to one of more of them, then you could have a balance issue which should be addressed. Whether the cause of a fall is from disorders of vestibular dizziness or an imbalance from a neuromusculoskeletal cause, falling is extremely problematic and fall risk needs to be managed. The staff at OrthoBalance PT are experts in the accurate assessment, retraining and treatment recover technology in the area of balance disorders using combined approaches which are best suited for optimal outcomes. Here you will find state-of-the-art Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) technology through the NeuroCom system, which has been developed for use by NASA and the National Institutes of Health to study the effects of balance function and control, and the effects of diseases on balance functions. The innovative “Smart Balance Master System” (developed by NeuroCom International) is today’s “Gold Standard” in balance assessment and treatment technology. In addition, there are free classes on Wednesdays aimed at awareness and prevention of falls among older adults. Topics include: Fall Risk Education and Prevention; Falls Among Older Adults: An Overview; Osteoporosis and Exercise Management; Balance, Dizziness, Abnormal Gait: Injury Prevention Strategies. A Winter Wonderland, a World Away:
Holly Gordon
In 1999, on the cusp of the New Year and the new millennium, photographer Holly Gordon, a Bay Shore resident and longtime member of Huntington’s fotofoto gallery, heeded a whim and embarked on a voyage of discovery to the most southern corner of the world, Antarctica. Although she originally believed that the “pursuit of adorable and amusing penguins” would be the primary focus of her picture-taking, very early on, Holly said that “they became upstaged by the visual splendor of the Antarctic landscape of which I am still daunted.” “Antarctica, the white continent, is the harshest, coldest, windiest, driest, most mountainous place on earth…truly a land of extremes,” Holly reported of the continent which is coated with a mile-thick icy blanket.
20 • village connection • february 2014
A double steel-hulled ‘icebreaker’ brought her and the other tour members within almost touching distance of icebergs, huge frozen monoliths whose tips loomed from the water with a stark yet ethereal beauty. Winter in Antarctica is diametrically opposed to that in the United States, and during her stay in the land of the ‘Midnight sun,’ light prevailed for almost 24 hours a day, Holly said. “I was most surprised by the brightness of the light,” said Holly, adding that she also felt that the lack of pollution in the atmosphere enabled her to capture nature in its most pristine form. The results of her photographic endeavor reveal a landscape imbued with an unparalleled luminosity, and images which resonate with a rhapsody of blues and whites.
“Nowhere on Earth have I traveled, where I discovered a greater clarity and purity of light than in Antarctica. For two magical weeks my camera and eye danced in unison as I documented, simultaneously, the beauty and fragility of our planet,” Holly said. And, as for the march of the penguins that had ignited her adventure, Holly encountered several delightful and intriguing species, including the Adélie, the Gentoo, the Chinstrap, and the Rockhopper. The Adélie penguin is the smallest, most, common and well-known of all Antarctic penguin species, the stereotypical penguin,” Holly said. “With its tuxedo shirt front and white rings around its eyes, it is most endearingly handsome and comical. They can be found forming colonies on coastal beaches throughout Antarctica. Scientists use the Adélie penguin as an indicator species to monitor the abundance of krill, which is
essential to the web of Antarctic life.” Holly’s images also convey a chilling message about the devastating impact of global warming, not only on the Antarctic region and its animal population, but for the ecological wellbeing of the world. The air quality of one of the purest habitats on earth is being compromised as pollution from the Northern Hemisphere steadily drifts towards Antarctica, where the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising. “Over the past twenty years, the annual ice-melting season in the Antarctic Peninsula has increased by two to three weeks. The Adélie penguin population has declined, substantially, due to the loss of sea ice habitat! A similar trend has occurred with the polar bear in the Arctic,” Holly explained. Holly’s image of an Adélie penguin, perched forlornly to a small morsel of an iceberg that probably once served as the home for colonies of these diminutive birds, speaks volumes about the dangers of global warming. This poignant image was awarded first place by National Wildlife Federation in the global warming category of their annual competition. Holly’s extensive travels around the world have provided inspiration for many of her exhibits. To see more of her work, visit www.hollygordonphotographer.com. Her images can be purchased via her website, at fotofoto gallery in Huntington, the Long Island Photo Gallery in Islip and at the Village Art and Frame Shop in Babylon.

Art & Music Christiane Matsumoto was born in Paris and grew up in France post World War Two. She was encouraged to paint by her polish grandmother who had a small art gallery in Paris. Her grandmother gave her a watercolor set and she started to paint seriously, portraying all of her classmates and teachers. She had a watercolor exhibit in her hometown of Viroflay before she came to the United States where she studied Landscape Architecture in Syracuse at the college of environmental sciences and forestry.
Christiane Matsumoto
Christiane graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in landscape architecture in 1981 and married Kyouichi Matsumoto. They moved to Long Island and found work as a landscape designer and landscape architect. In 2000, they created Kyo Matsumoto Inc., their own landscape and installation company, which is known by the name Madame Butterfly Gardens (www.madamebutterflygardens.com). As their children were growing up, she continued to paint and was invited by Peter Falotico to exhibit her work at the Northport high school. She has worked on developing her own art in her free time. Her latest series of paintings is dance and rhythm. In 2011, Christiane created the website Laviedartiste.fineartsudioonline.com for potential buyers to view her work. You can also view her work on her facebook page: Christiane Matsumoto Fine Arts. Elizabeth Cassidy rediscovered her artistic side three year ago while co-facilitating a women’s workshop in Manhattan. She met a woman who talked about wanting to draw for 30 days. Elizabeth’s arm went up into the air (she was hoping it was just a spasm) and thus began her journey back to her art. She had agreed to draw for 30 days with the photographer although it had been years since she had picked up a brush or a pen. Elizabeth quickly discovered that just because she wanted to get

back to and explore her art, her art didn’t come right back. Her artistic side was a little miffed with her for shutting it out for so long. Her first week of drawing was a total disaster. She started to grieve for the artist that she had been and abandoned, but then a remarkable thing happened, Elizabeth just told herself to paint whatever she wanted to paint with no restrictions. Little by little her inner artist decided to make another appearance and they have been living happily in the same body ever since that day. Her artistic side is teaching her a lot about herself and she lets it have its way when she sits down to create. Elizabeth’s success has come from listening without judgment or a critical voice, and that has made all the difference. When asked about her creative process, Elizabeth says, “I create art because I feel I have no choice but to paint what I feel. To me, it is a very emotional experience to put myself on paper whether it is words or art. And if I don’t get my art and words out – then who will? I like to think of this as the best job I applied for and got. And the good news is that I can’t fire myself. I tried once.I have to say almost anything I come across can inspire me. Sometimes I hear words and a visual pops into my head. Being known for being overly emotional is great when it comes to creating. Some days I feel like I can’t get my art supplies out fast enough. Some days I get them all lined up nicely and then I spend an hour looking at them. And that is okay. I keep in mind that Picasso Elizabeth Cassidy probably had a day or two like that. The trick is to keep showing up. Create your legacy when inspiration hits.” Elizabeth loves painting in pastels, dabbling with ink and colored pencils and she favors the abstract world since the rents are cheaper there. She also paints with her non-dominant hand and most of her portraits are created by using her left hand. Her favorite artists are Picasso, Modigliani, Monet, Calder, Kandinsky, Michelangelo, O’Keefe, Chagall and many others who have taught her to be true to her voice. Do not copy. Create your own masterpieces.
Elizabeth is also a humorist, creativity coach for artists and writers, Reiki Advanced Practitioner and a faculty member of the Art League of Long Island. She is a member of the Art that Matters Artists’ Collective and the Huntington Arts Council. MOMA even gave her an artist’s membership card. She is currently showing her art in shows and galleries around Long Island. Visit her website for info www.elizabethcassidyart.com Pamela K. Varacek is a native Long Islander; her love for the beach, ocean and Great South Bay has been a major source of inspiration for her. She received her B.S. in Art Education at Nazareth College of Rochester and soon after began a career as an art teacher. While taking time off to raise her 2 children, Pam decided to open a children’s clothing store where she hand painted children’s furniture. For the next 10 years, she enjoyed the creativity and challenge of running a store. But something was still missing from her life. About 2 years ago a friend introduced her to an online painting course taught by Mati Rose and Lisa Congdon. Pam realized that this is what was missing from her life, creating on canvas. Through this course, she found another course called Bloom True with Flora Bowley. The class was based on intuitive painting; the concept of
simply painting from your intuition. The course ultimately changed her life, for this is when she discovered a new love of expressing her imagination and whimsical imagery using mixed media and paint. She currently paints using intuitive painting. She is quoted by saying “This has been a liberating and life changing move for me.” Pam’s work starts out with simply covering the canvas in paint and then layers of paint are added over and over. With each layer, a metamorphosis is created on the canvas. Once the textured canvas is created, she uses her intuition to “find” imagery to bring out using acrylic paints but also mixed media such as found objects, photography, vintage papers, etc. She is currently showing her Pamela K. Varacek work in local galleries and shows and is working with a licensing company based in Connecticut. Visit her website, pamelakvaracek.com and on Facebook, pamelakvaracek. Eclectic Pairings are Setting New Trends in Outdoor Living Room Design Eclecticism in interior design, a trend that incorporates distinctive pairings, has found its way out the back door and into the outdoor living room, pool deck and even smaller patio designs where space is a premium. The movement combines modern with traditional design characteristics that include the use of a variety of colors, textures and patterns in an integrated design. Leading manufacturers of hardscape materials have broadened their product lines to reflect the avant-garde tastes of homeowners, landscape designers and hardscape contractors who share this sprightly, “almost anything goes” mindset. Hardscape materials such as concrete pavers, wall units and outdoor living room components, made from natural materials, can point to desired results without breaking the budget because they mimic the characteristics of their natural stone counterparts. Hardscape manufacturers such as Cambridge, have captured tasteful balances of solid and blended colors, pronounced textures and smooth surfaces along with limitless pattern possibilities within their product mix. Selections for designers and consumers boast value, durability, ease of installation and performance excellence while being mindful of coordinating colors and textures in both conventional and less-predictable ways. Having the ability to mix colors and textures without the fear of compromising performance allows flexibility in design that can step out of the box rather than box-in the designer to settle for the more mundane. Results can be quite striking and rewarding. Because solid and blended colors can be mixed if it complements a design objective or particular application, flexibility in choosing shapes, colors and textures is encouraged. Changing sizes from larger to smaller shapes will also add flavor to the final project. For example, areas can be sectioned off or highlighted by using bands of contrasting shapes in another color and/or texture. This is referred to as “banding”. If a retaining wall, perimeter wall, garden wall, tree ring or other kind of wall will be part of your landscape, an eclectic approach can also fit well in a hardscaping plan by not just combining different colors, styles and textures in the wall system but also in the design/build of the wall itself. Many contractors are demonstrating their creative prowess by integrating pavers, casual seating, column treatments, column
26 • village connection • february 2014
mailboxes, and untypical wall and column capping as well as semicircular and serpentine runs into the design. Most manufactured wall systems comprise modular units, which can be creatively arranged often without requiring additional cutting of the wallstones. By entertaining the many options at hand, the aesthetics of a wall can change from a traditional design to contemporary with little or no effort. This is the perfect time of year to start planning your outdoor projects. An array of photographs showing various applications of products ranging from pavingstones and wallstones to outdoor lifestyle amenities and enhancements can be found in the 2014 Cambridge Outdoor Living Guide, which is available online at www.cambridgepavers.com. Another good place to start your search is by attending home shows that usually pop up now through early spring. Manufacturers and contractors spend a great deal of money and time presenting products and services in the best possible light. You’ll find their displays are amazingly realisticlooking and idea provoking. If eclectic pairings titillate your taste buds when planning an front yard or backyard renovation, look for booths that catch your attention by displaying these techniques and professional expertise in executing them. Contractors with a bent for creativity will enjoy showing you samples of how their menus of hardscape products and installation ideas will satisfy even those homeowners most hungry for pairing up colors, textures and designs in a truly eclectic design.

Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

Seven Fun Facts About Cats and the Movies As The Village Connection celebrates its 14th anniversary, I am offering 7 wild and fun facts about cats in movies. (That's one fun fact for every two years.) The World's Most Expensive Kitten Birth. The famous Elizabeth Taylor/ Richard Burton CLEOPATRA epic had a myriad of production and budget headaches. One budget-buster happened when cameras rolled on a kissing scene between Liz and Dick in an expensive boudoir set. The romantic mood halted when howls and yells erupted from under Cleopatra’s bed. Stagehands found a pregnant feral cat under the bed giving birth to a litter of kittens. At a cost of over $14,000, the set was demolished in order to get the kitties to safety. Special Effect Kitty. BRINGING UP BABY (1938) is one of the greatest movie comedies ever. It follows Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant as they search for a runaway pet leopard. Cary wasn't too fond of cats, so almost every shot of him with "baby", the leopard were results of carefully and skillfully lined up rear screen projection shots and optical effects. A Killer Cat Movie? Yep! NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CATS is an utterly weird 1972 horror flick where a demented playboy stalks women from his bulky, loud helicopter. Once he gets the girls home, he feeds them to his many cats. It's tough making images of lots of polite pussycats chasing "victims" seem scary. Calling All Black Cats! For TALES OF TERROR (1962), a Poe-inspired horror/comedy, maverick director Roger Corman held an open audition for black cats. Bus loads of cat owners with their kitties appeared at his studio. (See picture) The human stars of the film were Vincent Price and Peter Lorre.

The First Televised "Person" Was A Cat! In 1928, RCA Research Labs engineers aimed an experimental gadget called a television camera on a Felix the Cat doll, and created the very first televised image. This Cat Is A Wise Guy! We've all seen that image of Marlon Brando as THE GODFATHER holding a cat. This unscripted detail for the first scene in this classic film occurred when Brando found a stray cat on the Paramount lot, and included it into the scene. Obviously, Marlon bonded with the cat. The cat’s purring muffled some of Brando's dialogue. His lines had to be re-dubbed later on. Kubrick The Cat-Man. Legendary director Stanley Kubrick loved cats, and kept many at home. He also rescued many strays. He would often bring cats to his sets. In the same way Kubrick famously paid fierce attention to every detail in his classic films, Kubrick gave incredible attention to pet care. If he traveled, Kubrick left his catsitter 15 pages of instructions. Attention creative and artistic cat lovers - I am preparing an independent film that will be filmed in the Huntington area titled CAT'S VIEW. It concerns a terrorist act as seen through the eyes of an abandoned house-cat. Want to come on board, or help out? Check out the link to the film on www.huntingtonactionfilms.com. Glenn Andreiev is a local indie film-maker. He is a graduate of New York's School Of Visual Arts. He is also a columnist for www.filmsinreview.com. Along with having made several feature films, Glenn teaches film-making classes at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre. His website is www.huntingtonactionfilms.com

Brasserie Cassis
Brasserie Cassis brings a warm touch of Gallic charm and superb French food to the Plainview Center, at 387 South Oyster Bay Road in Plainview. Like it's sister restaurant in Huntington Village, Bistro Cassis, the ambience and décor are reminders of the eateries on the Parisian Left Bank with carved cherry pilasters, ornate ceiling moldings and large antique mirrors. The stage is further set with stunning globe chandeliers, ambient lighting and vintage posters, a zinc bar top, and comfortable cherry-colored leather banquettes. Dine on authentic French bistro classics and hearty country fare like Moules Mariniere, mussels served steaming from a bowl with white wine and garlic, Salad Frisee aux Lardons, delicate frisse lettuces served with a poached egg and crispy bacon or the classic Escargots Maitre d'Hotel, snails with garlic and herb butter sauce--so indulgent and so French! Entrees change seasonally, but you can be sure to find Steak Frites and the Plats du Jour-- daily specials --such as Coq au Vin and Bouillabaisse
served different nights of the week. The classic bistro fare and comfort foods of Paris will keep the Francophiles coming back for more. The staff, lead by manager Ryan Klampfer, provides impeccable, friendly service and is knowledgeable in every aspect of their food and wine selections. An extensive wine list includes French favorites, fine reserves, champagne, dessert wines and the potent French absinthe. Finish your exceptional meal with an authentically prepared bistro dessert like Apple Tartin or Creme Brûlée. Brasserie Cassis is a great place for a gathering of friends, an intimate romantic dinner or a taste of joie de vivre! Eat to live, live to eat! Joanne Kois is a certified Health Coach and foodie. She lives and eats in Huntington and will be sharing her insights on the Long Island restaurant scene with The Village Connection. Contact her at joannekois@gmail.com
