This year marks our ninth annual Long Island Hospitality Ball! Every year the LIHB pays tribute to the best wine, spirits, beer companies, restaurateurs, nightclub owners, saloonkeepers, promoters, entertainers, bartenders and wait staff on Long Island. It is also a night of philanthropy, giving to a cause that effects too many of us and because cancer knows no boundaries.The executive committee and I started this event as a spin-off of our “Bartenders Ball” from the 1980’s, with new profound focus of giving back to cancer research. Flash-forward to the present day, the LIHB has grown tremendously; raising over $2 million dollars and is an event that is looked forward to by many Long Islanders.

We have accumulated an amazing team that “leaves their egos at the door” for this cause greater than them.We have some of the best in the hospitality and entertainment industry that serves as our executive committee and members. I think back to the first year we started, I will never forget both my mother and father were there with me. Seeing them while my father had his own battle at the time… simply having the time of their lives. Six months after the first ball, my father had lost his battle to cancer.This ignited the passion within me to never give up on finding the cure for this dreadful disease. Unfortunately, I know that each and every one of our members has a cancer-related story to tell, and this is the reason they continue to give their valuable time to the LIHB. Firstly, I would like to give a very special thanks to MariaElena who works endlessly to make this event possible.

She not only keeps me on track but is detailed-oriented making sure everything runs smoothly. Secondly, thank you to Nicole for burning the midnight oil making sure all the publications are perfected in a timely manner. I would like to give gratitude to the committee members and the executive committee for all of their valuable time and hard work that makes an event of this caliber possible. Next, to our partners from the Carol M. In addi:on, as a Long Island na:ve and resident, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate organiza:on to be involved with and support.

David C. Drucker

Long Island Hospitality Ball HONOREE - DAVID DRUCKER David Drucker is the Executive Vice President of Sales and a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of Empire Merchants, LLC. In his sales role, he oversees all sales and marketing for the Empire Merchants side of the house.

A native of Long Island, David obtained a BS from School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University and then continued on to Hofstra University School of Law for his J.D. David started his law career at Dickstein Shapiro LLP as an associate in the Corporate and Finance group focusing on corporate law and then moved to Sidney Frank Importing Company as Legal Counsel.

David then returned back to the business side and joined his family business, Premier Beverage of Florida. In February 2007, as the merger was underway in New York between Peerless Importers and Charmer Industries, David returned to New York to join Empire Merchants where he was instrumental in establishing the sales structure and fostering his relationships with suppliers. Since 2007, David has held various sales roles including overseeing the Vintage, Empire Merchants Wines, Empire Merchants Wine and Spirits, and Big Apple selling divisions. David’s passion for this business comes through in everything he does.

Long Island Hospitality Ball HONOREE - JOHN MURRAY, JR. John Murray Jr. was born on July 23, 1955, as the proud son of John and Winifred Murray. The Murray family lived in Queens, then later moved to East Meadow, where John spent most of his childhood. As a devout Catholic, John attended and graduated from Holy Trinity High School, where he met life long friend and mentor Joseph Delgiorno. It was also during these years where the first signs of John’s business acumen began to show: he managed the basketball team, sold concessions at Nassau Coliseum, and even started his own landscaping business.

Having not attended college, John is the epitome of hard work and perseverance. Shortly after high school, at the ripe age of eighteen, John opened his first bar, Binkeys, in East Meadow. After operating numerous different bars, including The Nightwork Lounge in Bellmore, John bought Mulcahy’s in 1983.

Over the past thirty-six years, John has been responsible for transforming Mulcahy’s from a small town bar on the corner of Railroad Avenue to the Long Island landmark that it is today. He has been the driving force thrusting Mulcahy’s to flourish into a highly successful gathering place for live music, events, holidays, and sports viewing.

Although he is known for his business success, John personally is most proud of his opportunity to give back to his community. He has opened his doors to numerous organizations that continue to host annual events at Mulcahy’s, such as The John Theissen Children’s Foundation, AMT Children of Hope Baby Safe Haven, Firefighter Michael J. Cawley Memorial Foundation (one of the longest running 9/11 foundations on Long Island), James D. McNaughton Foundation, Rick Bailey Memorial, and many more.

For his contributions to local business and charity, John has received many previous awards, such as the Wantagh Business Person of the Year (1992), Holy Trinity Hall of Fame (1998), Seaford 9/11 Patriot Award (2005), Wantagh Chamber of Commerce Inaugural Good Guy Award (2013), Nassau County Police Emerald Society Man of the Year (2013), and Inaugural Grand Marshall of the Wantagh St. Patrick’s Day Parade (2019). John credits his parents for instilling in him a sense of responsibility to the needs of the broader community. John would also like to thank his team at Mulcahy’s who ensure the smooth operation of daily business. This honor is not just given to John himself, but bestowed upon the entire Mulcahy’s family.

John resides in Wantagh with his loving and supporting wife, Laurie, and is the father of five wonderful children: John III, 34; Mary, 32; Timothy, 27; Christian, 17; and Julia, 12. On December 22, 2017, John became and grandfather with the birth of John “Jack” Murray IV. John’s life currently revolves around God, his family, and his business. Father Robert McGuire, S.J., when asked about John, praised him as “a good man with a generous heart and loving spirit.”

Long Island Hospitality Ball 2019 ED LOWE MEDIA AWARD RICHARD SCHOLEM Richard J. Scholem, born in New York City, was a graduate from Harvard University and Bowling Green State University, majoring in speech radio and minoring in business administration.

Richard worked as a writer/reviewer for the great restaurant brands in many markets, one in particular being The New York Times, Long Island edition, where he wrote about 800 reviews.

Richard Scholem won several awards. These awards were The Elliot Stewart award United Press International- Editorial Comment, Olive Award: Council of Churches City of New York- Outstanding local Broadcast service, Sigma Delta Chi: Radio Editorial Award, Special Citation: Distinguished editorial writing, New York state broadcasters associated press editorial awards, Long Island Coalition for fair broadcasting journalism awards, and Press Club of Long Island first place magazines opinion essay.

Richard is affiliated with several groups as well, including the James Beard Foundation NYC, Long Island Wine Gazette Board of Directors, Board Member of NY Drama critics circle, Massillon Planning Commissioner-Ohio, Chairman of Suffolk County ACLU, YMCA Board Member of Huntington, NY, Board Member of Huntington Arts Council, President of the Suffolk Family Service League, Board Member of Suffolk Community Council, and a member of the National Broadcast Editorial Association in Washington D.C.

June 24, 2019 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to send warm greetings to everyone gathered for the 9th annual Long Island Hospitality Ball, benefiting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund is committed to battling breast cancer by providing the funding necessary to allow researchers to learn more about this awful disease.

Every one of us knows a mother, sister or aunt that has been stricken with breast cancer, and I can think of no worthier cause for tonight's event.

I want to extend a special congratulation to tonight's honorees: David C. Drucker, John Murray, Jr, and Ed Lowe Media Award winner Richard Scholem. These individuals have not only supported public causes and charities through their professional work, but have also given so much of their personal time and resources to further cancer research.

The Long Island Hospitality Ball is a unique event that unifies the leading voices in the hospitality industry to support an outstanding cause. With everyone's support tonight, the Long Island Hospitality Ball volunteer committee will be able to continue its fantastic work in the fight against cancer for years to come.
