Demerise Perricone Demerise Perricone has always been moved by the beauty of the colors in nature - whether skies, water, or landscape - she enjoys painting the world around her and she has found that the Huntington area has no shortage of things to paint. Painting got to be a serious matter for her in high school became her major at Hofstra University. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Painting, studying under Perle Fine who is considered to be among the most prominent female artists associated with abstract expressionism. Her graduate degree is from Queens College where she studied with the renowned watercolor artist Barse Miller.

Demerise taught art for 32 years, mostly in Port Washington. She had a solo exhibit during the summer of ’99 in a local gallery, had a painting in the Northport Historical Society’s juried exhibit “Artist’s Vision of Northport” and she is currently a member of the Firefly Artist’s, a cooperative gallery featuring local artists located in Northport Village. She has been a Northport resident for almost 40 years. A Brief History of Coindre Hall Coindre Hall was originally known as West Neck Farm when it was created between the years 1906 through 1912. It was established as a country home for George McKesson Brown and his wife Pearl, who commuted from New York City where they owned a pharmaceutical company. The Brown’s became year-round residents during World War 1. The estate was essentially a self-contained manor of approximately 135 acres between Huntington Harbor and Southdown Road. It contained numerous buildings including a Farm house, a garage complex for many automobiles, the Gate House, the Boat House, the Water Tower, the Ice House, and the Main House (which is now know as Coindre Hall). All of the buildings on the Estate were linked to the Main House by a complete telephone system. On several occasions, the Estate, particularly the Water Tower, was used by movie studios in filming silent movies. Warner Oland (the original Charlie Chan) and cowboy Tom Mix were two of the stars who filmed there. The Main House itself was modeled after a chateau in the south of France. Within the Main House, there was an indoor “plunge” (swimming pool) and a walk-in refrigerator in the basement. The chandelier in the center of the spiral staircase is a copy of the one that hung in the New York State House in Albany. In the basement, ashes from the furnace and from the upstairs fireplaces were removed by an electrically operated Tramway. Another feature in the basement was a forced ventilation system that drew fresh air into the building, and warmed it with radiators in the winter or cooled it in an ice room on the hot days of summer. The treated air was then

passed through ducts in the walls to all parts of the building. The ice in the ice room was harvested from the pond behind the Boat House each winter and stored in the Ice House on the west side of the pond. The ice was then brought up to the ice room in the basement of the Main House as needed. In 1932, Mr. Brown’s wealth had diminished mainly because of Income and Real Estate Taxes. He broke up the Estate and began selling off portions of the property. In 1939, the Brown’s moved into the Gate House (which is now the Unitarian Church) and the Northeast 34 acres on which the Main House was situated was sold to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. After some renovations, the Brothers named the building Coindre Hall after the founder of their order and opened it as boarding school for young boys. After 30 years, the school eventually went bankrupt. The building was occupied by two other schools consecutively for a short time each, but both also went bankrupt. Coindre Hall was finally acquired by Suffolk County in 1972 but neglected until it was dedicated into a County Historical Trust. In 1991, the Alliance for the Preservation of Coindre Hall Park was organized to preserve, protect and restore this property. It is not only known as a local landmark, but is also listed in the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. In 1995, the mansion was officially designated “The Museum of Long Island’s Gold Coast”. Is Your Herniated Disc Really Causing the Problem? When someone says to me, “ I have a herniated disc in my back,” I want to say, “So does 80% of the population.” I hold back because that doesn't sound very compassionate, and I am very compassionate about a persons pain and injuries. I will also do anything I can to help them overcome their injuries. So, if 80% of people have some level of a herniated disc, and many have no symptoms, then how do we know that the herniated disc is causing the pain? There is a method of figuring this out. Let me first explain what exactly a herniated disc is. There are different terms used interchangeably, including herniated disc, slipped disc, pinched disc and more. When you bend forward and round out your back, your disc moves posteriorly between the two vertebrae. This movement is normal. When you straighten back up to an upright position the disc returns to sitting equally between the two vertebrae. A herniated disc results when you return to the upright position and the disc does not move back into the correct spot. It continues to stick out between the vertebrae, becomes pinched and causes pain. If the impingement is more severe, you may feel pain down your leg as far as your toes in addition to back pain. Whether you can do exercises to fix a herniated disc, or if you need surgery, will depend on how severely it is “sticking out.” If the herniation is not severe, then your body has the ability to reabsorb the disc and align it properly between the two vertebrae. The following exercise is one example of a “Mackenzie Exercise” that can aid your body to re-align the disc. There are many directions that the disc can slip out. I am going to discuss an exercise used to re-align a disc that is herniated posteriorly. If you have a posterior disc herniation and it is causing pain, you can try extending your

spine to aid your body in re-aligning the disc. Here is an example of a Mackenzie Extension Exercise: • Lie on your stomach • Gently arch your back and rest your upper body on your forearms • Hold this position for as long as it takes to feel your symptoms subside. If the herniated disc is causing the symptoms, you will start to feel the pain in your leg and foot move out of your leg and up to your back until you no longer have pain in your leg. This happens as your body re-aligns the disc into its proper position and it is no longer being pinched. The thought process behind these extension exercises is that if the herniated disc is the source of pain then these exercises will re-align the disc and eliminate the pain. If you do not get relief from your symptoms, then the herniation may be severe or something else is causing the pain. Please do not try these exercises until you have talked with your doctor and he has made a diagnosis and has cleared you to do so. I just want you to be aware that herniated discs are common and that it needs to be determined if they are causing a problem. You can also have a herniated disc that never causes pain or a problem. If you are having back plain please go see your doctor so you can work with him on a plan to heal.

From Past to Present T he Early Days of Gardening
I can remember going to visit my aunt & uncle as a young boy and being fascinated by these massive, large-leaved plants growing in their backyard. Thinking back, I recall them being Cannas, but at that time I only knew them as “those big monster plants.” Long before I had an interest in horticulture as a livelihood, I found a connection to nature through plants. My grandmother’s vegetable garden in Pennsylvania always inspired me with its abundance of vegetables & herbs. The freshly prepared meals that came from her garden were amazing and tantalizing to my taste buds! Those delicious aromas that would pervade throughout her house seemed like they would entice anyone from miles away! When my parents started growing their vegetable garden, I was excited by the first harvest finally being brought to the kitchen table and to my palette! A little bit of country was brought to our suburban backyard, which made its way to my heart, and tummy of course! That’s when I decided to start planting some easy growing vegetable seeds like radishes and string beans. I always got a kick out of seeing them sprout and produce a crop. I could actually make something grow! Planting green bell pepper plants was a lot of fun for me too as I would wait for the first white flower to appear where the pepper would emerge. It was almost as exciting as getting a new matchbox car or trading baseball cards with my friends! When I discovered how easy it was to grow nasturtiums, snapdragons, marigolds and zinnias from seed then I started to add flowers to the garden. Planting summer blooming bulbs can also be a rewarding project for kids & adults alike. My mom loved to grow dahlias & gladiolus and

it was always so cool to watch them emerge and burst out with their endless array of colors. Cannas, caladiums, elephant ears, calla lilies, tuberous begonias, Oriental & tiger lilies, as well as dahlias and gladiolus are just a few of the fun summer flowering bulbs and tubers that can bring a season of enjoyment to the landscape. Their bold foliage & flowers make a strong statement and will add interest to the garden that is sure to be a conversation piece. Just remember to dig up the bulbs in the fall and store them in a cool dry place so you can plant them again next year. May is probably the biggest month for planting a vegetable or flower garden and with a little preparation you can enjoy the bounty it will bring for the rest of the season. Last year I tried growing red romaine lettuce as a cool weather crop and it did great. Plus it looked nice as a border plant in the garden. I also planted some kale with it so there was plenty of delicious fresh salad to enjoy for several weeks. If you have a limited amount of room then you may want to try planting up some containers for your patio or deck to enjoy as a small space garden throughout the summer. Photos by Alan Stableford

Are the Natural Colors of Old Stone in Concrete Pavers the New Green? Manufacturers of interlocking concrete pavement systems have inherently relied on natural color palettes when matching colors for their pavers. This stems from the long history of interlocking pavements of natural stone in Europe and other parts of the world dating back to ancient times and remains commonplace today. It is augmented here in America by the ever-expanding use of hardscaping— a term for the placement of generally permanent, non-plant elements such as pavers, walls, enclosures and even lighting in a planned outdoor area. Also in vogue are sustainable products that provide environmental, social and economic benefits over their entire life cycle. When selecting a type of pavement, it is encouraging to know that all of the raw materials used for the mix formulas in manufacturing concrete pavers and wallstones are sustainable. Architects, landscape architects, designers and contractors recognize these manufactured products as “green construction” when designing residential driveways, walkways, patios, around pools and spas as well as in outdoor living rooms. Equally encouraging to the ecology-minded is the fact that interlocking concrete pavement systems have become an environmentally friendly and economical alternative to concrete and asphalt in parking lots, roadways, fire lanes, and many more commercial/municipal applications for developers, major corporations and cities favoring principles of “green” construction. Hardscaping product manufacturers also make permeable pavers that are specially designed to boost rapid removal of storm water. The system allows for natural drainage and groundwater recharge resulting in considerable reductions in water runoff. A permeable pavement, when professionally installed, can be categorized as a structural BMP (Best Management Practices) solution in both pedestrian and vehicular areas when the percentages of impervious (solid) surfaces on a residential or commercial lot exceed the limits outlined by local zoning requirements. This soil condition is often prevalent in flood-prone areas, lake communities and shore locations. Paver and wall systems can also be used to prevent erosion, another condition that threatens the
environment. Turn to a professional contractor who can present viable, solutions-based options specific to your property. Deference to nature is in. In keeping with this, manufacturers have been allotting sizable amounts of time and expense in developing colors that reflect consumer demands for blends, textures and other surface characteristics that mimic their natural stone counterparts. Different solid and blended colors can be used in conjunction with each other to create a random pattern that reflects the combination of several natural hues. While the workmanship of pavement installations may or may not be covered by the installer, some pavingstone manufacturers offer warranties on the product that may include the permanence of the color. With today’s hardscaping products at your feet, you won’t have to take a hike in the mountains to be in harmony with nature — just step outside your home where you will have created your own maintenance free “green scene”. Signs and Butterflies Butterflies are a beautiful sign of spring. Perhaps there is more to them than we think. Many people talk about the significance of certain living creatures coming to them, like Cardinals and butterflies. Some even believe that it’s a lost loved one. Butterflies go through an amazing transformation. These various stages of metamorphosis relate very much to our own lives. Our birth is the caterpillar stage, our death is the chrysalis stage, and our resurrection to the afterlife is the butterfly stage. There are many cultures and religions who view the butterfly as a symbol of transformation. Native American Indians are very connected to nature and to animals. They have what are called totems which represent the animals and the meanings behind them. They view the butterfly as a symbol of happiness and change. The Chinese view the butterfly as a symbol for long life, while the Japanese view butterflies as symbols of love, marital bliss and harmony. Most other countries around the world believe that butterflies are departed souls. The butterfly represents the soul's freedom upon death. In ancient Greece, the word for butterfly is "psyche" which means "soul". In modern day it stands for "psychology", the study of the mind. The Greek's believe that butterflies are the souls of people who have passed away. Same thing is true in Russia, where their word for butterflies is "dushuchka" which comes from "dusha" which means "soul". In Mexico there is a small town where

Monarch Butterflies migrate to every year. It happens to coincide with a Mexican holiday known as the Day of the Dead. The town celebrates the butterflies because they believe they're the souls of the deceased returning. In Ireland, the Irish believe that butterflies "are the souls of the dead waiting to pass through purgatory". As for Cardinals, many people believe that these beautiful red birds are also souls who are visiting us. Especially symbolic in the Christian religions, the Cardinal symbolizes faith, and is also symbolic of the blood of Christ. So if a Cardinal appears in your window it could be telling you to keep the faith and remind you of Christ's presence in your life. That is also why the Cardinal is seen on Christmas cards and in Christmas displays. The next time a butterfly or Cardinal flies your way, take a second look. Maybe it's a connection to a long lost soul, or maybe it's the answer to something you've been searching for.

What’s going on behind those red doors on New York Ave? More then the pictures on the front can describe. Yes music, dance, theater classes and lessons are happening but so is artistry, creativity, discipline and accomplishment at all stages of development. In addition the Center connects with the community whenever possible. Huntington Center is always ready to share with the community. Whether it’s the Huntington Arts Council’s auditions for their annual LI Got Talent or master classes; space for the fire victims of March 1Village Artist or Huntington Yoga & Wellness; rehearsal space for Long Island Dance Consortium’s “Next Generation”; “Business after Hours with the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, free performances by Long Island Ballet Theatre or a pre- school - Star of the Sea Montessori - The doors are always open. Huntington Center is home to a ballet academy, music school and related workshops and programs. One unique organization that calls the Center home is - Huntington Ballet Theatre now called LI Ballet Theatre (LIBT). This organization has put artists to work for close to 30 years and brings performing opportunities to students throughout LI. All performing projects hold open auditions. LIBT produces, on average, two full- length, classical, ballet productions each year and additional contemporary pieces in association with the LI Dance Consortium. LIBT boasts a team of dance and theater professionals that is unparalleled in a community arts organization – choreographers such as Christopher Fleming (former NYC ballet dancer) director of countless LIBT projects for the past five years; Jason Summers (Artistic Director of Westchester’s Sandbox Theater) director of LIBT Nutcracker 2012 & 2013, David Fernandez (master teacher and choreographer in NYC) currently creating a new Coppelia production for 2015 and new work for the Gala Performance May 31, 2014 and new comer Saya Harada who choreographs ballet & modern work for professionals and student dancers. The training that is provided to the dance students at Huntington Center ‘s Ballet Academy is something only found in NYC. The majority of the instructors of the Ballet Academy are American Ballet Theatre National Training Program certified and have their Masters degrees from NYU’s ABT cooperative program – that means these instructors have taught at the famed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis ABT school under the direction of the founders of the program. Each year the Center students are evaluated by the ABT School and receive written evaluations detailing their progress. The faculty is an international mix of styles and artistry led by Sonia Jones, Maeve Dougal, Saya Harada, David Fernandez, Jeannette and new this year Jae Young Jung. Then there is the music – using the respected Suzuki method children and adults master the violin, viola, cello & piano focusing on ear training and memorization before progressing to note reading. Led by Joan Albright, a twenty -year veteran of the Suzuki method, the children, as young as 3 yrs, take both group and private instruction. The faculty is filled with talented artists as well, Innesa Tymochko (violinist) is an EMI recording artist, who hails from the Ukraine and

tours the world bringing her brand of electric, rocking Ukranian music and classical music energized by her style. It is not unusual for Innesa’s students to master Bach and Lady Gaga in the same lesson! Also on faculty is aspiring professional violinist, Natalie Kress, currently a Masters degree candidate (on scholarship) at Stony Brook University. Seasoned teachers such as Gary (cello) & Cathy Beck (viola , violin, piano, cello) make this a family affair and along with fellow Northport resident & certified teacher, Garrett Semmelink offer traditional studies to advanced students who seek to score high on NYSSMA and be challenged by classical and contemporary music. Piano students study with Lucas Baslov, who is also a Masters degree candidate at Stony Brook University. On May 31, 2014 at 7pm Huntington Center & Long Island Ballet Theatre will present a unique performance that will showcase all of the professional talent, programs, schools and companies that reside at 310 New York Ave. known as Huntington Center for Performing Arts.
