Doug Reina Doug Reina is a full-time artist based in Stony Brook, who works “en plein air” and in his studio to recreate the landscapes and people that are a part of his life. He is a 2014 Pollock-Krasner grant recipient whose artwork has been exhibited primarily here on Long Island, with some exposure in New York City, Connecticut and Florida as well. Although he studied art at Buffalo State College, Reina’s education really began at home; his father is a sculptor and was chairman of the Art department at Nassau Community College, and his mother ran an art gallery in Cold Spring Harbor. Over the years, Reina has continued to grow as an artist by taking several classes with abstract painter Stan Brodsky and painting workshops with Joe Reboli and Christian White. Is Your Herniated Disc Really Causing the Problem? When someone says to me, “ I have a herniated disc in my back,” I want to say, “So does 80% of the population.” I hold back because that doesn't sound very compassionate, and I am very compassionate about a persons pain and injuries. I will also do anything I can to help them overcome their injuries. So, if 80% of people have some level of a herniated disc, and many have no symptoms, then how do we know that the herniated disc is causing the pain? There is a method of figuring this out. Let me first explain what exactly a herniated disc is. There are different terms used interchangeably, including herniated disc, slipped disc, pinched disc and more. When you bend forward and round out your back, your disc moves posteriorly between the two vertebrae. This movement is normal. When you straighten back up to an upright position the disc returns to sitting equally between the two vertebrae. A herniated disc results when you return to the upright position and the disc does not move back into the correct spot. It continues to stick out between the vertebrae, becomes pinched and causes pain. If the impingement is more severe, you may feel pain down your leg as far as your toes in addition to back pain. Whether you can do exercises to fix a herniated disc, or if you need surgery, will depend on how severely it is “sticking out.” If the herniation is not severe, then your body has the ability to reabsorb the disc and align it properly between the two vertebrae. The following exercise is one example of a “Mackenzie Exercise” that can aid your body to re-align the disc. There are many directions that the disc can slip out. I am going to discuss an exercise used to re-align a disc that is herniated posteriorly. If you have a posterior disc herniation and it is causing pain, you can try extending your

spine to aid your body in re-aligning the disc. Here is an example of a Mackenzie Extension Exercise: • Lie on your stomach • Gently arch your back and rest your upper body on your forearms • Hold this position for as long as it takes to feel your symptoms subside. If the herniated disc is causing the symptoms, you will start to feel the pain in your leg and foot move out of your leg and up to your back until you no longer have pain in your leg. This happens as your body re-aligns the disc into its proper position and it is no longer being pinched. The thought process behind these extension exercises is that if the herniated disc is the source of pain then these exercises will re-align the disc and eliminate the pain. If you do not get relief from your symptoms, then the herniation may be severe or something else is causing the pain. Please do not try these exercises until you have talked with your doctor and he has made a diagnosis and has cleared you to do so. I just want you to be aware that herniated discs are common and that it needs to be determined if they are causing a problem. You can also have a herniated disc that never causes pain or a problem. If you are having back plain please go see your doctor so you can work with him on a plan to heal.

From Past to Present T he Early Days of Gardening
I can remember going to visit my aunt & uncle as a young boy and being fascinated by these massive, large-leaved plants growing in their backyard. Thinking back, I recall them being Cannas, but at that time I only knew them as “those big monster plants.” Long before I had an interest in horticulture as a livelihood, I found a connection to nature through plants. My grandmother’s vegetable garden in Pennsylvania always inspired me with its abundance of vegetables & herbs. The freshly prepared meals that came from her garden were amazing and tantalizing to my taste buds! Those delicious aromas that would pervade throughout her house seemed like they would entice anyone from miles away! When my parents started growing their vegetable garden, I was excited by the first harvest finally being brought to the kitchen table and to my palette! A little bit of country was brought to our suburban backyard, which made its way to my heart, and tummy of course! That’s when I decided to start planting some easy growing vegetable seeds like radishes and string beans. I always got a kick out of seeing them sprout and produce a crop. I could actually make something grow! Planting green bell pepper plants was a lot of fun for me too as I would wait for the first white flower to appear where the pepper would emerge. It was almost as exciting as getting a new matchbox car or trading baseball cards with my friends! When I discovered how easy it was to grow nasturtiums, snapdragons, marigolds and zinnias from seed then I started to add flowers to the garden. Planting summer blooming bulbs can also be a rewarding project for kids & adults alike. My mom loved to grow dahlias & gladiolus and

it was always so cool to watch them emerge and burst out with their endless array of colors. Cannas, caladiums, elephant ears, calla lilies, tuberous begonias, Oriental & tiger lilies, as well as dahlias and gladiolus are just a few of the fun summer flowering bulbs and tubers that can bring a season of enjoyment to the landscape. Their bold foliage & flowers make a strong statement and will add interest to the garden that is sure to be a conversation piece. Just remember to dig up the bulbs in the fall and store them in a cool dry place so you can plant them again next year. May is probably the biggest month for planting a vegetable or flower garden and with a little preparation you can enjoy the bounty it will bring for the rest of the season. Last year I tried growing red romaine lettuce as a cool weather crop and it did great. Plus it looked nice as a border plant in the garden. I also planted some kale with it so there was plenty of delicious fresh salad to enjoy for several weeks. If you have a limited amount of room then you may want to try planting up some containers for your patio or deck to enjoy as a small space garden throughout the summer. Photos by Alan Stableford

Are the Natural Colors of Old Stone in Concrete Pavers the New Green? Manufacturers of interlocking concrete pavement systems have inherently relied on natural color palettes when matching colors for their pavers. This stems from the long history of interlocking pavements of natural stone in Europe and other parts of the world dating back to ancient times and remains commonplace today. It is augmented here in America by the ever-expanding use of hardscaping— a term for the placement of generally permanent, non-plant elements such as pavers, walls, enclosures and even lighting in a planned outdoor area. Also in vogue are sustainable products that provide environmental, social and economic benefits over their entire life cycle. When selecting a type of pavement, it is encouraging to know that all of the raw materials used for the mix formulas in manufacturing concrete pavers and wallstones are sustainable. Architects, landscape architects, designers and contractors recognize these manufactured products as “green construction” when designing residential driveways, walkways, patios, around pools and spas as well as in outdoor living rooms. Equally encouraging to the ecology-minded is the fact that interlocking concrete pavement systems have become an environmentally friendly and economical alternative to concrete and asphalt in parking lots, roadways, fire lanes, and many more commercial/municipal applications for developers, major corporations and cities favoring principles of “green” construction. Hardscaping product manufacturers also make permeable pavers that are specially designed to boost rapid removal of storm water. The system allows for natural drainage and groundwater recharge resulting in considerable reductions in water runoff. A permeable pavement, when professionally installed, can be categorized as a structural BMP (Best Management Practices) solution in both pedestrian and vehicular areas when the percentages of impervious (solid) surfaces on a residential or commercial lot exceed the limits outlined by local zoning requirements. This soil condition is often prevalent in flood-prone areas, lake communities and shore locations. Paver and wall systems can also be used to prevent erosion, another condition that threatens the
environment. Turn to a professional contractor who can present viable, solutions-based options specific to your property. Deference to nature is in. In keeping with this, manufacturers have been allotting sizable amounts of time and expense in developing colors that reflect consumer demands for blends, textures and other surface characteristics that mimic their natural stone counterparts. Different solid and blended colors can be used in conjunction with each other to create a random pattern that reflects the combination of several natural hues. While the workmanship of pavement installations may or may not be covered by the installer, some pavingstone manufacturers offer warranties on the product that may include the permanence of the color. Signs and Butterflies Butterflies are a beautiful sign of spring. Perhaps there is more to them than we think. Many people talk about the significance of certain living creatures coming to them, like Cardinals and butterflies. Some even believe that it’s a lost loved one. Butterflies go through an amazing transformation. These various stages of metamorphosis relate very much to our own lives. Our birth is the caterpillar stage, our death is the chrysalis stage, and our resurrection to the afterlife is the butterfly stage. There are many cultures and religions who view the butterfly as a symbol of transformation. Native American Indians are very connected to nature and to animals. They have what are called totems which represent the animals and the meanings behind them. They view the butterfly as a symbol of happiness and change. The Chinese view the butterfly as a symbol for long life, while the Japanese view butterflies as symbols of love, marital bliss and harmony. Most other countries around the world believe that butterflies are departed souls. The butterfly represents the soul's freedom upon death. In ancient Greece, the word for butterfly is "psyche" which means "soul". In modern day it stands for "psychology", the study of the mind. The Greek's believe that butterflies are the souls of people who have passed away. Same thing is true in Russia, where their word for butterflies is "dushuchka" which comes from "dusha" which means "soul". In Mexico there is a small town where

Monarch Butterflies migrate to every year. It happens to coincide with a Mexican holiday known as the Day of the Dead. The town celebrates the butterflies because they believe they're the souls of the deceased returning. In Ireland, the Irish believe that butterflies "are the souls of the dead waiting to pass through purgatory". As for Cardinals, many people believe that these beautiful red birds are also souls who are visiting us. Especially symbolic in the Christian religions, the Cardinal symbolizes faith, and is also symbolic of the blood of Christ. So if a Cardinal appears in your window it could be telling you to keep the faith and remind you of Christ's presence in your life. That is also why the Cardinal is seen on Christmas cards and in Christmas displays. The next time a butterfly or Cardinal flies your way, take a second look. Maybe it's a connection to a long lost soul, or maybe it's the answer to something you've been searching for.

Blydenburgh County Park
Richly forested hills and valleys at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, rowing and fishing on lovely Stump Pond, casual strolls through the Blydenburgh Farm and New Mill Historic District featuring a grist mill. These are but a few of the attractions of Blydenburgh County Park. This 627 acre park is open year-round to Suffolk County residents and their guests. Horseback riders may ride or trailer their mounts to Blydenburgh to utilize an extensive bridle path system and practice ring. Trailer parking is available at the northern (New Mill Road) entrance. Suffolk County horseback riding permits are required and must be visibly displayed by all riders. Freshwater fishing for pumpkinseed sunfish, large-mouth bass, perch and bluegill is permitted at Stump Pond between sunrise and sunset. New York State freshwater fishing laws apply. Rowboat rentals are generally available from mid-May to Labor Day. Use the southern (Veteran's Memorial Highway) entrance for these activities. Hikes through Blydenburgh are led on a regular basis by the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, whose headquarters are located in one of the houses. The Historic District part of

the park is located by the “back” entrance of the park. Several buildings, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are easily accessible from the parking lot. The Grist Mill, Miller’s House and Stump Pond are all accessible via a staircase. The Blydenburgh / Weld House was built in 1821 and added onto in the 1860′s.The Caretaker’s Cottage is Gothic Revival in the style of Andrew Jackson Downing. The Ice House was built in the late Nineteenth Century. The Miller’s House was built between 1801 – 1803. The Grist Mill dates from 1798 and a second floor was added to it sometime in the late Nineteenth Century. A Saw Mill stood next to the Grist Mill and a Fulling Mill was built near-by in 1827. The Grist Mill is the only Mill that survives today. Stump Pond is one of the largest inland bodies of water on Long Island – at 180 acres. It was created by the Blydenburgh Family in 1798 by placing a dam at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, near where three streams joined to form the river. This was done to set up the Mill complex.
