Avocado Toast Avocado toast has been steadily growing in popularity over the past few years, and it’s easy to see why. This “trendy” breakfast food has been popping up all over instagram because it’s delicious and packs a ton of health benefits. It never gets boring, because it’s so easy to customize your avocado toast with your favorite toppings. Berries, eggs, bacon, or even sweet potatoes can go with avocado! The options are endless and will give you a great start

to your morning. This version of vegan avocado toast is full of superfood pomegranate and pumpkin seeds, and can be made with your favorite regular, gluten free, or paleo bread. Ingredients: 2 pieces of toasted bread 1 ripe avocado, halved and pitted Coconut oil or butter Sea salt 1 lime, sliced (or sub 2 tsp lime juice) Pomegranate seeds Raw shelled pumpkin seeds (also called pepitas) Directions: Toast your bread and then spread coconut oil or butter on each piece. Slice your avocado and place the slices on the toast, then squeeze a slice of lime over the avocado (or drizzle 2 tsp bottled lime juice). Sprinkle the avocado slices with sea salt. Add pomegranate seeds and pumpkin seeds on top of the avocado.

Should Children Lift Weights? The answer is YES!! The Mayo Clinic and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recommends that children as young as age 7 can benefit from weight training. Children should perform weight training with an experienced coach/personal trainer who can teach them the proper form and intensity that is appropriate for that individual child. The NSCA (I have their highest gold standard certification) uses all evidence based research to make its recommendations, meaning a lot of research studies performed regularly. They have studied the misconception that resistance training will stunt a child’s growth. There has not been one growth plate fracture reported in any youth resistance training study. This shows that when your child works with a knowledgeable coach/personal trainer that they can safely perform resistance training. The NSCA sates “ With appropriate supervision and instruction, the risks associated with youth resistance training are not greater than other activities that children and adolescents regularly participate.” HERE ARE THE BENEFITS: *Muscle strength in all muscles can help protect your child’s muscles and joints from becoming injured. Muscle imbalance (when some muscles are strong and others are not) often lead to injury. *Improved performance in all sports that your child plays *Increased bone strength: proper weight training puts the necessary force on the bones that cause the bone to increase in density and strength *Increased confidence: when a child is able to do push-ups that he/she wasn't able to do in the past it builds confidence and a positive feeling of accomplishment. *Helps children maintain a healthy weight. Burning calories through weight training will help your child to maintain a healthy weight. Muscle burns more calories than fat so the more muscle

22 • village connection • february 2016

your child has the more he/she can eat and not gain weight. *Cardiovascular exercise is also important in the overall fitness level of your child. *Improved Mood: exercise causes your brain to release serotonin the “feel good” hormone. *Increased concentration levels: exercise helps the body release energy and can lead to a calming affect after you finish. Studies have shown that kids who exercise are able to focus better in school. Here are the National Strength & Conditioning Association guidelines to safe weight training for your child: 1. Supervision of a coach/personal trainer 2. Warm-up of light cardiovascular exercises that mimic the strength exercises that the child will be performing 3. Repetitions of 12-15 when using heavier weights is most appropriate 4. Body weight exercises should be part of a strength training workout and can help the child build up to using other types of resistance. 5. Children should have a rest day in between each workout.

YOUR BACKYARD CAN BE THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT The arrival of the “outdoor living room” — a fashionable term for a comfortable, extra living space outdoors — has brought with it “the outdoor man cave”, carved out by toting up handsome stainless steel barbecue grills; bar islands; flaming fire pits; and wall mounted, flat screen TVs for Football Sunday cheering squads. It’s also time for gentlemen of good favor to move over and make room for girls’ nights out (outside that is). Today’s conveniences, available from leadingedge hardscape products manufacturers, offer the ladies a lot of reasons to host backyard gettogethers in lieu of traveling out to a local restaurant, lounge or public meeting spot. For most women, small parties traditionally begin in the kitchen. Female guests are known to join the hostess while she scurries around prepping food and keeping a close watch on oven temperatures and cooking times while cleverly arranging appetizers and pairing wine pours. The thought of backyard cooking has been long-linked to summertime grilling of chicken, hot dogs and burgers, but by today’s standards, cooking outside can mean different things for different people. The most casual or upscale cooking and dining experiences can be simple or multifarious with memorable summer soirées making it into all four seasons. It can mean a great way to grill a new Southeast Asian satay, spit-roast a whole chicken using a savory baste with its beginnings in a nearby herb garden, bake an authentic bistro-style tomato pie, or cook veggies in adaptations that are socially and nutritionally good for you, your lady friends and family members. Chances are there’s a cooking component from Cambridge and other hardscape product manufacturers that falls right into your outdoor lifestyle and reflects a fresh approach to favored indoor culinary tastes and personal cooking styles. The models from Cambridge can standalone or be built-in to a patio setting that also provides casual seating right where all the kitchen action is taking place. Cambridge Fully-assembled Outdoor Grill Islands and Precut/Pre-packaged Grill Module Kits, for example, are compact yet

24 • village connection • february 2016

versatile, gas cooking and grilling patio components. They have the durability of hardscape materials and polished granite countertops plus premium-grade, stainless steel grills and cabinet access doors. For larger areas, four-piece Cambridge Fully-assembled Outdoor Kitchens can be arranged in “L”-shaped and “U”-shaped configurations or in a straight line. “L”-shaped models are also available in pre-cut/prepackaged kits. Large grills with five burners, two lights for nighttime cooking, rotisserie, built-in thermometer, warming rack and slide out grease tray are among the features included with the standard Cambridge Stainless Steel Appliance Packages. Consider adding an authentic, woodburning Outdoor Pizza Oven or a Bar Module to broaden your backyard’s entertainment value. A professional contractor can help with a design that is genderneutral so everybody can enjoy the moment. Visit an authorized Cambridge Distributor for a handy Kitchen Design Template and plot your own space. Like any recipe worth its salt, a pinch of Cambridge Outdoor Living Components within your patio setting blends right in with the flavors of Cambridge Pavingstones with ArmorTec®.
