Welcome to the summer! Thanks to Timeline Events for the fabulous cover photos taken on a recent shoot for The Friends of Raymond, conavigated by our very own Clare with her husband Will steering these historic boats. Please take time to read our article on Raymond and Nutfield, plus a competition to win family membership of the Canal and River Trust Musuem. Plenty of evidence suggests that simply being near to water makes people more content and relaxed - so what better place to exercise and spend your leisure time this summer than alongside a canal or river?

Be Skin Confident Did you know your skin is the biggest human organ? It is your body’s coat and the first line of defence. Skin conditions can affect both men and women; the British Skin Foundation estimates 60% of the population is affected at some point in their life by a skin condition. This can include acne, eczema, premature ageing or skin tone issues. Depending on the severity - the conditions can be difficult to manage physically and emotionally. The American Academy of Dermatology also published a study which shows that late-onset or adult-onset acne is becoming increasingly common in women in their 20s to 50s. However there is increasing evidence suggesting that skin health and appearance could be improved with modest dietary changes and specific nutritional supplements. A survey by ethical vitamin company Viridian Nutrition revealed that two thirds of volunteers who tested the Clear Skin Programme reported seeing improvements in their skin condition after two months. Developed to support optimal skin health, the Clear Skin Programme devised by Viridian Nutrition’s experts incorporates recipes from The Clear Skin Cookbook by TV chef Dale Pinnock, together with two nutritional supplements - Clear Skin Complex capsules and Organic Clear Skin Omega Oil. The 2017 survey confirmed the results from a similar survey in 2013, and reported that 76% of participants described their skin condition to be ‘better’ or ‘much better’ after following the Clear Skin Programme for 60 days. Furthermore 73% stated they were ‘happy’ or ‘happier’ overall with their skin appearance Experts at Viridian Nutrition monitored volunteers’ progress by asking participants to submit before and after photos and filling in questionnaires on their skin condition over the duration of the project.

TV Chef and author of The Clear Skin Cookbook Dale Pinnock with Shaun Higgs at Sheaf Street Health Store.

Jenny Carson, Viridian Nutrition’s lead analyst for the Clear Skin Project commented: “Both the 2017 and 2013 surveys, show that by following the Clear Skin Programme, using the combination of two nutritional supplements and adopting recipes into daily life can improve skin condition within two months.”

Viridian Daventry Triathlon Have you signed up to the 2018 Viridian Daventry Triathlon on 9 September yet? The Viridian Daventry Triathlon consists of a sprint distance race, starting with a 400m swim in the Daventry Leisure Centre, followed by a 20km cycle section through the Northamptonshire countryside and finishing with a scenic 5km run around Daventry Country Park. The Friends of Raymond “ Nutfield & Raymond “ The Friends of Raymond was formed in October 1996 to recover, restore and exhibit Raymond, the last unpowered wooden commercial carrying narrowboat ever built in the UK: by 2002 restoration was complete. In 2003 Nutfield, came on the market, and the charity managed to buy her. The boats are based at Braunston Marina on the Grand Union Canal. Raymond (launched in 1958) and Nutfield (launched in 1936) worked as a pair right up to the end of the canal trade in the early 1970s when they carried coal from Atherstone in Warwickshire to Southall in North London.

Volunteers Volunteers are essential to keeping the spirit of Nutfield & Raymond alive and can be called upon to help crew the pair to various waterways events where the public are invited on board to experience the life of a working boat family and the history of commerce on the canals.

Where it all started In 1995 Tim Coghlan (MD of Braunston Marina) organised a re-enactment of the “Jam ‘Ole Run” on the 25th Anniversary of the ceasation of the coal trade. A number of old working boats, went from Braunston to Coventry, loaded with a (token) amount of coal, carried it to

18

Brentford and returned to Braunston – all in a week. This is what the old boatmen did for a living until the trade died out in 1970. Why the “Jam ‘Ole”? It was a narrow entrance to the factory of Kearley & Tonge who (among other things) made jam. While at the “Jam ‘Ole” someone enquired of the whereabouts of Raymond because she was one of the boats which went on the last run. She had been given to the “Wooden Canalcraft Trust” in December 1992 who had hoped to restore her, unfortunately they couldn’t raise the funds so in October 1996 it was decided to form a charity with the specific aim of restoring Raymond and the Trust agreed to give her back. And so was born the “Friends of Raymond”.

Re-Build Raymond was collected from the Wooden Canalcraft Trust at Runcorn, where she had sunk, and taken to the Black Country Museum at Dudley for assessment, where she sank again, twice. It was soon clear that she was far beyond restoration and that a re-build was the only option.

Fund-raising for Raymond Fund-raising was the first essential and while a host of small efforts got under way a lot of effort also went into

Please mention The Village Emporium when responding to adverts

Feature

getting a Lottery Grant, submitted early in 1998. The total estimated cost was about £85K and the bid was for £52K. That left a lot of money to find, thankfully the committee had some hard workers – and some persuasive talkers. By December 1999 restoration work was under way and by the start of July 2000 Raymond was back in Braunston and moored just a few yards from where she had been built in 1958.

No engine!!

Get in touch to volunteer Help with stalls at various boat shows, fundraising or join a maintenance working party. There are also opportunities to help crew the boats. Contact the volunteer organiser at volunteering@friendsofraymond. org.uk or become a member of the Friends of Raymond from just £10 per year. See website for more details friendsofraymond.org.uk

Raymond was once described as a ‘lame duck’ – she had no engine and could go nowhere without a motor to tow her, previously Roger and then Nutfield in 1968. The once prosperous carrying trade had already dwindled due to competition by road (the railway at Braunston had already come and gone. Various boaters helped out with towing when they could. Maintaining any boat is a never-ending process, especially where wood is in use. The Friends of Raymond continue to look after both Nutfield & Raymond and aim to keep them in top class condition so that they can be shown off to the public at various boat shows each year. They always need help to crew them, to maintain them and to raise the money needed for this.

Bach flower remedies Holistic approach Born in 1886, Edward Bach was an English doctor, bacteriologist and pathologist, who was conducting research into vaccines when he became interested in a more holistic approach to medicine. Dissatisfied with the tendency to treat the disease rather than the whole person, he began collecting plants and in particular flowers - the most highly developed part of a plant - to find remedies. He believed that illness was the result of internal conflict, and that negative moods such as unhappiness, fear or worry, caused a lack of harmony which ultimately manifested themselves in physical disease. By correcting this emotional imbalance, illness could be treated or avoided. “Health depends on being in harmony with our souls,” he asserted.

The remedies are usually taken orally by mixing with water, although they are also available as droppers, sprays, liquid melts and pastilles. Only a few drops are required which should be taken several times a day. In some cases results can be instant, whilst in others it could take several days for any benefits to be realised. There is little scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of Bach’s Flower remedies, and some claim that any benefits experienced are due to the Placebo effect. That said, they have now been in existence for over 80 years, and there are plenty of testimonials available on the internet giving credence to their effectiveness and healing properties.

Bach abandoned scientific methods of research and turned instead to his intuition to guide him to the right plants. Whilst experiencing a negative emotion he would hold his hand over different plants, and if one alleviated the problem he would ascribe to it the power to heal. In this way he identified 38 flower remedies that can be used alone, or in conjunction with others to treat emotional and spiritual conditions.

Rescue remedy In addition, Bach developed the Rescue Remedy, which is a ready-made combination of 5 flower essences that can provide comfort and reassurance for daily stressful situations.

World Friendship Day – 30th July Also known as International Day of Friendship. World Friendship day was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919. It was intended to be a day for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other card. Sales of friendship day cards did not take off in Europe and by the mid-1940’s the day had faded into obscurity in the USA and eventually it died out completely. However, in 1998 Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations (believe it or not!), and in April 2011 the United Nations officially recognised 30th July as International Friendship Day

Cynical Originally celebrated on 2nd August, the day was largely viewed cynically by the public as a money making exercise by the card companies. The idea of a day to honour friendship was, however, adopted by a number of

26

countries in Asia where it remained a popular custom to reserve a day for celebrating friendships and the exchange of gifts between friends.

Social media With the growing popularity of social media throughout the world, there has been an increase in celebrating World Friendship day and International Day of Friendship online , there are even websites with different messages and poems that you can send. Community activities in local areas are aimed at bringing those of different backgrounds together. Friendship day is a day when we appreciate our friends. Those who have been there for us through thick and thin. It is only befitting that we let them know that they are loved and cherished for being there, listening and simply tolerating our shenanigans regardless of how crazy or unreasonable.

Travelling With Kids Keep family holidays a trouble-free, happy experience by following these tips! Keep entertained

Pack plenty for kids to do during long, tedious journeys. A device loaded with apps is nice and compact, but also consider hand held puzzles, colouring books, plasticine, puppets, stickers, reading books and cards.

Keep safe

Use a child locator if you are visiting busy airports or crowded tourist attractions. Your child wears a small unit strapped to a belt or shoe and you keep the transmitter. If you lose your child, set off the alarm and follow the sound to find them. For older kids, write your mobile phone number on their arm.

Keep healthy

clean restaurant tables, cutlery and toilet seats and hand sanitiser for when there are no washing facilities nearby. A basic first aid kit is also a must! Pack pain killers or an easy to swallow medicine like Calpol, along with antiseptic wipes, plasters, anti-histamines and a thermometer.

Keep memories

Give smaller children a robust, child-friendly camera to record what’s important and interesting to them, and encourage older kids to keep a travel journal on postcards by writing messages to themselves - they make great memories for adulthood!

Happy holidays!

Young children often get ill on holiday. Keep bugs at bay by having a supply of antibacterial wipes to

Walking back to happiness Health experts recommend that we get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week. To achieve this, look no further than something you’ve been doing since you were a toddler - walking! Walking has been described as “the nearest activity to perfect exercise” and offers a host of health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke. In addition, walking conditions all the muscles of the lower body, particularly those in the bottom and thighs, and US psychologists also claim that regularly spending time outdoors can help stave off anxiety and depression. Walking can, quite literally, be done anywhere but if tramping the streets or countryside alone is not your idea of fun, why not join a walking group near you? They are a great way to make new friends and meet likeminded people in a sociable and safe environment. The Ramblers is Britain’s walking charity, with around 500 groups throughout the British Isles. Most groups are organised geographically, but there are some that specialise in shorter, easier, or family-friendly walks, and others that cater for specific age groups - for example people in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Walks are run weekly and are generally led by a trained leader. The cost of annual membership is £35 or £3.25 per month.

30

The British Walking Federation organises walking events for people of all ages and abilities, to encourage personal fitness through regular non-competitive exercise. To participate, simply turn up and register on the day. A list of events can be found on their website www.bwf-ivv. org.uk along with a list of walking groups around the country. The British Walking Federation offers individual membership at £8 per year, which entitles members to a calendar of events, newsletters and discounts on entry fees to permanent BWF trails. If you like walking but fancy something a little different, why not give Nordic Walking a try? Originally designed to help cross-country skiers train during the summer months, this method of walking is suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels, and involves the use of specially designed poles to give you a full body work out that tones the arms, legs, stomach, chest and back, in addition to the legs. Using the poles puts less pressure on the joints as the work is shared between different parts of the body. The only equipment needed to start Nordic Walking is a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothing. Poles are provided within the class fee price of £5-£6 for around an hour. For more information visit www.nordicwalking.co.uk.

Michael Trolove / Long Buckby Church

Long Buckby More than meets the eye

Stuff of nonsense

The village of Long Buckby is large and impressive with very diverse buildings dating from different eras. With a population of nearly 4000 by the time of the 2011 census the term ‘village’ is used loosely. Long Buckby is growing with new developments currently being built close to the popular railway station, with its direct links to London and Birmingham, to encourage a new generation of villagers. It has almost doubled in size since the 1970s, yet there are still plenty of buildings which retain their historic character and charm - 37 buildings within the village are ‘listed’ in recognition of their architectural and historic significance. These buildings provide throwbacks to the history of a village where wool-making then later shoe-making once flourished. The history of the village dates back much further than that though with the castle mound dating from 1150AD, although it is now almost hidden within a residential area. Long Buckby is indeed a place of hidden gems, which are certainly worth sharing.

The joy of exploring villages often comes when we understand who lived there and how they lived, particularly when discovering famous people and their associations with the village. Perhaps you have guessed whom I am referring to? Stanley Unwin – the wry comedian who is famous for inventing his own language, “Unwinese”. This revelation bought a smile to my face and gives the village added appeal. Mr Unwin lived in Long Buckby from 1940 until his death in 2002. His “nonsense” language delighted people for generations and he is now buried in the local churchyard at Long Buckby.

32

A tale of two villages Sharing its name with the larger village is Long Buckby Wharf, a small hamlet full of character and well worth a visit, with its charming church and village hall. It also

has the Grand Union Canal (and wharf ) running right through it. The canal was once bustling with trade before the coming of the railways and motorways, including the busy and relentless M1 motorway nearby. Watford Gap is also a significant ‘landmark’, just two miles west of Long Buckby, as it is home to the first motorway service station in the United Kingdom. Long Buckby has always been accessible and well connected – there is a regular bus route travelling to/from Rugby, through Long Buckby, Daventry, and Northampton.

New boots and shoes The shoe making industry thrived throughout Northamptonshire in Victorian times. In fact the towns and villages in Northamptonshire each had a slightly different area of ‘shoe expertise’ - Long Buckby was famous for the high quality of their equestrian boots. The countryside surrounding the village is beautiful and it is easy to see why horse lovers enjoy hacks in the local area. There were shoemakers in Long Buckby who worked in small cottage industries making and mending footwear, continuing the family trade well into the late twentieth century. Some of these highly skilled craftsmen and women still live in the village today.

Long Buckby today It’s on your doorstep and a must see if you like buildings steeped in history, dreaming of Norman castles, and remnants of the industrial past, including a glimpse of our inland waterway heritage. Long Buckby today is vibrant and busy, with facilities to rival those of larger towns. Come and see it for yourself – it may well surprise you.

The Travel Locker…. Local to you

Upstairs, downstairs Life above and below stairs at Kelmarsh Hall Many of us have seen Downton Abbey and become captivated with the goings on `upstairs and downstairs’ for the Crawley family and their servants in a classic English country house, but what was life really like for an aristocratic family and their servants? Visitors to the elegant, 18th-century Grade I listed Northamptonshire country house Kelmarsh Hall can now find out for themselves with the opening of a dozen new interactive rooms which enables visitors not only to savour the opulence and grandeur `above stairs` but also to go `below stairs’ and experience what life was like amongst the hidden rooms, in which the servants lived and worked. You can experience first - hand the daily working activities of the servants, from polishing the silver, cleaning the boots to doing the laundry. Visitors can explore the servant’s bedrooms, the Huntsman’s room, bakery, laundry and beer and wine cellars. Not only can visitors see how the servants lived but they can also immerse themselves with the smell of the laundry and the sounds of the servants chatting while they worked. Visitors can listen to `hologram` footman John Jacobs describing why he is the `hardest working man in the house’ then stroll across to the bakery to smell the fresh bread being baked. There is also a secret door which leads to a hidden servants staircase through which

36

the servants could pass and go about their daily tasks without disturbing the peace and quiet of the upstairs rooms. A small window at the foot of the stairs allowed the House Steward to keep an eagle eye on the movement of his staff at all times. A ` dumb waiter’ made it possible for food and drink to be moved effortlessly from below stairs to the dining room above. I stooped low and walked the long, wet, dripping tunnel which connects the servants quarters to the laundry and drying rooms. Small children will love the opportunity to touch and interact with the objects on display. A former coach house has been transformed into a dedicated new Learning Centre. This large, brightly lit resource has all essential interactive teaching aids and is available for school groups to follow up on the experiences they have enjoyed `downstairs`. The centrepiece of Kelmarsh is the Great Hall which was built in 1732 with its breath taking Italian `Wedding Cake’ terracotta pink walls and fine 18th century intricate ceiling plasterwork. There is a stunning single gilt lantern hanging down from the double height room with windows close to the ceiling, flooding the room with natural light. The Saloon with polished oak floorboards and far reaching vistas cross the parkland is just as grand!

The walls of the Chinese Room are covered with 300-year-old hand-painted wallpaper of incredible detail. The Ballroom was added during the reign of Queen Victoria and has splendid views over the West Terrace to the lake beyond. The Dining Room displays several female portraits and the more formal Library comes complete with a secret door, which resembles a bookcase. Take the time to visit the Yellow Drawing Room too. Much of the house was refurbished by American interior designer and later owner, Nancy Lancaster, who was celebrated for introducing a relaxed country house style, which later became recognised as the quintessential English country-house look. Her spirit still permeates the house today in the delicate terracotta colouring of the Great Hall, the exuberant Chinese wallpaper and seasonal flower arrangements. I can highly recommend a visit to Kelmarsh Hall for families with small children, school groups and anyone who has an interest in social history or are simply looking for an educational and/or enjoyable day out. Kelmarsh Hall is about 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Market Harborough and 11 miles (18 km) north of Northampton. Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens Kelmarsh, Northampton NN6 9LY

Who’s for ice-cream? National ice cream month In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month! Isn’t that a fab idea? I think the UK should definitely follow suit on this one. Around 25% of all ice cream sold in the UK is vanilla. As a nation it seems we’re not terribly adventurous. Here are some more frozen facts:

Earliest reference The earliest known reference to ice-cream in England was in 1672, at a feast of St George banquet at Windsor Castle. The lucky recipient of the country’s first ice cream headache could have been Charles II and his nearest and dearest. Approximately 15 billion litres of ice-cream are consumed worldwide every year - enough to fill 5,000 Olympic swimming pools.

42

According to NASA, ice-cream is among the top three items most missed by astronauts on space missions: the others are pizza and fizzy drinks. When Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield went into business as Ben & Jerry, they only chose ice-cream because bagel-making equipment was too expensive! Who knew?

Ice cream diet!! There is actually a diet called ‘The Ice Cream Diet’... seriously! It was developed in Venice by an ice cream store (no surprises there) and involves ‘cleansing’ your body and mind by eating five pints of raw coconut-based ice-cream a day for four straight days...I assume that’s if you don’t give yourself brain-freeze or a coronary first!

Happy Ice Cream Month!

Talking of trees ‘Oak before ash we’ll only have a splash, but ash before oak and we’re in for a soak’, goes the old adage. And I think the ash trees were bursting forth well ahead of the oaks this year so I guess it’s umbrellas at the ready! But can you spot and oak from an ash? Do you know an elder from an alder? Tree and plant identification not only enriches our enjoyment of the natural world, but using the ‘natural’ language that goes with it is essential to promoting our enjoyment and knowledge of nature and being able to share with others. In 2015, over 500 ‘natural’ words were removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary to make way for what were argued as being more relevant 21st century words. Campaigners leading against the changes cited that that A for acorn and B for Buttercup, had become A for attachment and B for blog. With a rise in the number of families living in urban areas and a sharp decline in children playing outdoors or visiting the countryside, some argue that the result is an alarming acceptance that children might not see and no longer talk about trees, flowers, plants and the creatures that live and thrive in them. ‘We do not care for what we do not know, and on the whole we do not know what we cannot name’, says Robert Macfarlane, writer, wordcollector, campaigner and author of The Lost Words, a sumptuous book through which delightful ‘word spells’,

50

with exquisite illustrations, encourage the reader to conjure up nature’s ‘lost words’ and bring them back into our vocabulary. (It is definitely a beautiful gift for children and adults alike.) Although conkers, acorns, brambles, ivy, willow, magpies, wrens, (some of the ‘lost words’) are not endangered species, their loss and meaning will make it harder and harder for children and adults to make connections, to understand and to appreciate the natural world throughout the seasons. So, download an app or grab an ‘I-spy Book of Trees’, put it in your rucksack and go out into the great outdoors this summer; use everyday natural words to enrich your experience. But above all, talk to others, especially children, and share these words before we all forget them and new alphabet books start with A for app, and B for broadband. Going batty! International bat night When you think about bats what springs to mind? Do you imagine vampires or spooky haunted houses? Do you imagine the horror of getting one tangled in your hair? International Bat Night is held on the last weekend in August and hopes to change our perception of bats. During this annual celebration, bat events for the public will take place across the country. There will be bat walks and talks organised by bat conservation groups, wildlife trusts and park rangers at a venue near you.

Fascinating mammals Bats are fascinating creatures. They make up just over a quarter of the UK’s mammal population and they are the only ones that can fly. Britain is host to eighteen native species plus occasional migrant visitors. Pipistrelles are the commonest British bats. They weigh just 5 grams (less than a £1 coin). Bat populations are under threat from predation, crime and loss of habitat so UK bats and their roosts are now protected by law. Many people who profess not to like bats cite their wings as the reason but bat wings are actually beautiful pieces of biomechanical engineering. Bat wings are constructed in a similar way to human hands, only with membrane of skin stretched between the elongated, delicate fingers. Bat bones are not hollow - unlike bird bones - but they are very slender and flexible. Because their wings are

52

much thinner than bird wings they can manoeuvre more easily at speed. They are also more vulnerable to damage but tend to heal very quickly.

Bats in the belfry ? These unique creatures fly and feed in the dark. Across the world there are fruit and nectar-eating bats, and even real vampire bats which drink blood, but all UK bats live on insects. They find them using echolocation, producing a stream of high-pitched calls and listening to the returning echo. This provides a ‘picture’ of their surroundings. Although they can hear better than they can see, they are certainly not blind. In addition, their impressive navigational systems mean they are extremely unlikely to get caught in your hair! The old saying about bats in the belfry is a bit of a myth. In fact, bats rarely seek out church towers, preferring somewhere quiet, and less draughty. They favour houses, both old and new, and cause few problems as they come and go. They are neither noisy nor smelly and householders are usually unaware of their presence. If bats do set up home in your roof, their access must not be impeded. If you’d like to encourage these interesting little creatures to your garden you can buy or make specialist bat boxes to fix to outside of your home to encourage them to take up residence. Help, advice and general information on Britain’s bats is available at www.bats.org.uk.

National Allotments Week 13th – 19th August 2018 What will you be doing for National Allotments Week? “Living and growing” This year’s theme highlights the importance of growing your own food and the Society would like to see everyone incorporating fruit and vegetable gardening in some way in to their lives; however small. Herbs on a balcony, an apple tree on a patio, strawberries in hanging baskets or tomatoes in a big pot by the back door - ripe and ready to pop in a salad. Growing at home can help people on allotment waiting lists hone their horticultural skills and raises awareness for children of how and where their food is produced. As we are all aware growing on an allotment plot adds many more benefits for individuals, society and the environment. So, let’s open our gates during the 2018 campaign week, show off our skills, share our joy in gardening and communal endeavour and get everyone living and growing!

allotments in the public eye, make sure they are mentioned in the Local Plan and lobby your councillors and MPs. Councils preserve and value your allotment service – it has the potential to deliver some of your public health targets. Plot-holders -join the National Allotment Society and support your regional allotment network to promote the allotment movement. Aspiring plot-holders - do not be put off by the thought of a long wait – sign up for a plot now; without waiting lists allotment authorities cannot assess demand. Find out more at www.nsalg.org.uk.

The National Allotments Society aims to protect, promote and preserve allotments and they are calling on all those who value allotments to support them in this endeavour. We can all do our part: Allotment associations - protect your site, register as a community asset. Allotment Federations -keep

Two people, one dog and a special guest One of the charming things about dogs is how expressive they are. Every owner can tell you when their dog is feeling a particular way by their canine body language. So, if you have a dog you are probably familiar with the perils of taking your dog on a long drive. At some point you will look in the mirror and see the ‘I did something wrong’ face and the next breath usually tells you what that look for. The eye watering smell hits you and it is time to stop and get some fresh air in the car. Even if you manage to avoid an unexpected gas incident, you will definitely become aware that your dog is taking up more ‘air space’ than you would like. Dogs have an aroma all their own and, love them as we do, it can be invasive to say the least. The return journey is often worse because your dog will have rolled in everything it can find and thrown itself in every available body of water. So now you are in a confined space with a happy, but very pungent, canine. When you finally get home, everything is better. Well, better that is if you live in a home big enough that your dog has its own living space and has learned to give itself a nice hot bath, clean up the tub and then spray around some delightful perfume it purchased on the trip. Dogs

60

are fun, dogs are great, dogs are part of the family but… dogs tend to stink a bit. Don’t yell at me, it’s not their fault, they just do. Do you recognise this scenario? Yes? well not much I can do about the car but in the home, Ah, there I may be able to help. I am working on the launch of a handy little plug in product for your home that is design to help tackle, amongst other things, the smelly ‘doggyness’ that comes with our canine chums. It doesn’t work by spraying chemicals around to mask the smell, in fact it doesn’t contain any chemicals at all. I would like some people to review them for us, no charge, we just want you to report back on how well it worked. Interested in helping us by reviewing the device? Then email me at the address below and I will send you out some details. Oh, and watch this space – we may be even more generous next edition. Recipe

Lots of lovely lollies For the family

For Mum Gin, lime and tonic ice lollies

Strawberry cream pops

To make simple syrup, add the sugar and water to a pan and heat gently until sugar has dissolved. Set aside to cool.

Puree 2 cups of the strawberries. Add the ice cream and blend to combine. Fold in the remaining 1/2 cup chopped strawberries. Pour into moulds and insert sticks. Freeze for several hours until solid.

50g caster sugar 50ml water 100ml gin 100ml lime juice (about 2 limes) 600ml tonic water 10 lime slices (optional)

In a bowl, mix the gin, lime juice, tonic water and simple syrup. Divide the mixture between each lolly mould, leaving a little space at the top to allow to expand. Freeze for 1-2 hours until semi-frozen then push sticks into place. Also add lime slices at this point if you want, pushing them to about halfway down. Return to freezer for a further 3 hours, or overnight. To remove ice lollies from mould, run lukewarm water over the mould to loosen before removing.

Cider and blackberry lollies

2 1/2 cups chopped strawberries, divided 1 pint vanilla ice cream, softened 11.5oz, bag white chocolate chips 2 tablespoons coconut oil chopped pistachios, optional

Melt the white chocolate chips and coconut oil together in a 2 cup measuring glass in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between each, until the white chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Line a sheet pan with parchment and set nearby. Remove the frozen strawberry ice cream pops from their moulds, and working quickly, dip each one in white chocolate and place onto the prepared sheet pan. Sprinkle with chopped pistachios (or sprinkles!) if you’d like. Place in the freezer to firm up for a few minutes. Serve immediately or store in a zip-top bag in the freezer.

For Dad

300ml cider 80ml apple juice Fresh or frozen blackberries

1. Mix the cider and apple juice together. 2. Place three or four blackberries in each of the lolly moulds. 3. Pour the mix into the lolly moulds. 4. Place in the freezer overnight.
