Best village shop in the Midlands
Napton Village Store faced closure four years ago, now it’s an award winner. Owner Hannah Slade recalls her journey.
As village residents, we didn’t want to lose yet another community asset so we decided to buy the failing shop and post office and have a go at running it. Our bank thought we were bonkers! So we had to work really hard and put all of our savings into the business to convince them and other sceptics that we could do it.
Success three years on
My husband Adam and I had complementry skills in retail and the building industry and we set about making a plan for change - rebranding, rebuilding and relaunching in January 2014. In February 2014 the Post Office was reintroduced. The shop was given a makeover - new flooring, refrigeration, layout and complete redecoration. Then the product offer grew every week: freshly baked bread and pastries, locally produced provisions and everyday essentials, newsagent, lottery retailer; we built and built!
Three years on we are still here, offering weekly fruit and veg boxes, local meat, free range eggs, bespoke hampers, outside catering. We support our community with food and wine tastings and charity events.
Originally this was to be Adam’s business with my support, but with 2 small children and a business that operated 65 hours a week plus all of the other jobs that come with a small business, we decided to make it a fulltime job for both of us. We gave it three years to make us a living and hoped that the local community would support and value our venture.
20
The next step was opening the “Napton Kitchen”, a kitchen within the shop offering homemade cakes and delicious sandwiches using our own fresh bread. Now we serve homemade hot food every day. If we sell it in the shop we can prepare it for you in the kitchen.
In return for our efforts we have just won a Countryside Alliance Rural Oscar for Best Village Shop and Post Office in the Midlands and then went on to receive a highly commended in the Nationals. It’s the most challenging and yet rewarding work we have ever done - but it’s important that we don’t lose our rural businesses and community hubs. If you don’t use them you will lose them! ‘Ne’er cast a clout ‘til May be out.’ Sound advice not to change our winter clothes to summer clothes until June, as there is often a sudden cold snap in May. Some people think ‘May’ refers to the month but others take it to mean the May flower or hawthorn. I know that gardeners eagerly await the daily weather forecasts ready to leap into action with much fleece and bubble wrap to save tender new plants from frosts in May, and even into June!! My dad warned about removing our vests during May because, ‘Those cold east winds’ll cut you in half.’ And this little extract from the Whitby Gazette1885, might have supported my dad’s warnings but I daresay the wind is always cold up on the East coast! The wind at North and East Was never good for man nor beast So never think to cast a clout Until the month of May be out As a florist, I use lots of natural and foraged material in my designs and in May I can look around and see the trees stretching out their fresh vibrant green leaves and bearing beautiful blossoms, not least the humble hawthorn or the ‘May’ tree.
During May, the frothy white hawthorn blossom literally drips from our hedgerows, single hawthorn trees will be flowering in parks and open spaces and on a sunny day the heady scent can be almost overpowering … in fact hawthorn flowers have been associated with death. The Woodland Trust reports that in medieval times it was said that hawthorn blossom smelled like the Great Plague – definitely not a blossom to sniff too closely!! Some of us are lucky enough to have a hawthorn tree in our garden; the ‘Midland’ hawthorn is an ideal small tree that has stunning bright pink blossom. Paul’s Scarlet is the best known variety and probably my favourite. Handled carefully, avoiding the thorns, and conditioned well, makes a beautiful addition to any vase arrangement. But the hawthorn just keeps on giving…in autumn it is covered in deep red ‘haw’ berries that when cooked with crab apples and strained, provides the basis of delicious Haw Jelly which can be enjoyed with cold meats, bread and cheese. What’s not to like about our humble hawthorn?
For centuries, miles and miles of hawthorn hedge has given form to our fields across the English countryside. Probably because it is the easiest, fast growing, least troublesome hedging, growing well in pretty much any soil conditions. It’s density and thorny structure makes it a good defence against livestock escaping, the best cover for birds and insects, a perfect windbreak, especially sheltering little lambs (against those cold east winds!) and last but not least it has the most magnificent blossom of all!

Why should you take a fish oil supplement? Will taking fish oil supplements make you healthier? Perhaps the real question you should be asking yourself is ‘Why am I not taking a fish oil supplement?’ There is an undeniable volume of evidence supporting the various health benefits associated with oily fish intake, but its estimated two out of three people don’t manage to eat the recommended twice weekly portions of oily fish, published by the Department of Health UK. Whether it’s down to the sight, taste, smell or cost, or even having the knowledge and confidence to cook, eating oily fish may not always be a practical option for some people. Fortunately, there is an alternative - taking a daily fish supplement, either as an oil or capsule, can provide you with the required essential omega fatty acids 3, 6 & 9 as well as DHA and EPA in one easy daily application, making it easier to incorporate into your diet. Here are some of the health benefits linked to supplementing with fish: 1. Cardiovascular health – omega 3 fatty acids, DHA in particular, have been associated with a significant reduction in coronary heart disease. 2. Mental health – deficiency of omega 3 and 6 has been implicated in a wide range of mental health disorders. Both play an important role in neurological functioning.
32
3. Pain and inflammation – good fish oils will contain high levels of omega 3’s, these essential fatty acids play an important role regulating inflammatory responses. 4. Skin health-omega fatty acids offer potent antiinflammatory properties. 5. Pregnancy and lactation – mothers who take fish oil supplements during pregnancy could lower the risk of premature birth, increase the length of pregnancy and birth weight, and improve child neurological development. To summarise, there are plenty of recommendations to consume oily fish but fish oil supplements can be considered a healthy alternative if you don’t like fish or can’t get enough in your diet. And for those of you who are vegan and vegetarian, you still have the option of benefiting from these important nutrients. Flaxseed oil is a great source of essential omega’s 3, 6 and 9, and marine algae offers a source of the important EPA and DHA. A good omega product will provide a vegan friendly oil containing both components. For more information, advice and support on natural remedies, visit Sheaf Street Health Store in Daventry or visit the Facebook page.

Much of what we sell are made by well-known brand names, that we believe give our customers confidence they are making the right choice when purchasing from us. Yet another satisfied customer for local kitchen company
Rita and Lou Hoare Are among a growing number of homeowners to benefit from the craftsmanship and high level of service of Doors & Drawers of Rugby. This summer Doors & Drawers transformed the kitchen of the couple’s detached house in Bilton by fitting new made-to-measure doors and drawers to the existing cabinets. The makeover has given their kitchen a modem, contemporary look. “We had used Doors & Drawers to refurbish the kitchen of our previous property,” said Rita. “We trusted them so much we were happy for them to give the kitchen of our current home a complete makeover while we went away on holiday. “When we walked through the door and saw our new-look kitchen for the first time, we were amazed. We are very pleased with the final outcome, both in terms of the finish and styling and the standard of craftsmanship. “It’s just like having a brand new kitchen. It looks great and we have had no problems at all since the work was completed. We recommended Doors & Drawers after the first time we used them and we will be happy to do so again.”

Exams – from an invigilator’s perspective!
Exam invigilating?...the words ‘paint, watch, drying’ come to mind I hear you say! Indeed, the nearest analogy rather bears witness to that - it’s rather like flying... busy at take off, busy at landing, with not a lot going on in between!
However, there is much for the invigilators to do in ensuring a calm atmosphere and safe environment during the exams to enable all pupils the opportunity to perform at their best throughout, whilst maintaining the security of the exam. As you can imagine not all pupils have the same inclination towards exams, irrespective of their potential to achieve an A* or not. Combined with that, for many, exams generate high levels of stress and anxiety before, after, and during the exam. Stress levels for invigilators are of a totally different order...we may not be sitting the exam, however, we are motivated to enable ‘performance’ on the day and ensure there are no avoidable distractions in the exam room for the candidates - from other candidates sitting the exam, or externally from pupils who appear to find difficulty in comprehending a sign which reads ‘Quiet please – exams in progress’! Gone are the days when invigilators, in my experience, sat reading a book, doing knitting or a crossword and you ‘possibly’ had the opportunity to cheat, if you even dared! No longer notes on scrappy bits of paper, but electronic devices which hold data to contend with... So, pre exam notices can feel long, and maybe unnecessary to an already anxious student - how many times have you got to hear the same instructions over a four to five week period? However, all very necessary to ensure the ‘rules of engagement’ in the exam are fully understood, and they know the first thing to in the event of the fire alarm going off!
they come to the exam room...the following examples inspired and witnessed whilst being with students! Have they planned their revision, and actually done any; do they have the right equipment for the exam – practical things such as turning up with a black pen that works, a fully functioning calculator and geometry set if required; are they wearing the right uniform as determined by their school; equally important, has the student had a good night’s sleep, eaten breakfast/lunch, are they fully hydrated? Ordering a pizza, and standing at the gate awaiting delivery between exams is not an option! Nerves when they first come into the exam hall is one thing, allaying them can be helped by their good exam preparation, a calm atmosphere, and supportive invigilators. Some useful links for further information about effective exam preparation.... www.goodluckexams.com/what-to-eat-before-an-exam/ startcooking.com/10-tips-for-healthy-eating-duringexams www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3xdq6f www.theguardian.com/teacher-network/2016/may/10/ six-ways-students-can-prepare-for-success-on-the-dayof-an-exam www.wikihow.com/Study-For-Exams
Something that invigilators have no control over however, is how well prepared the students are when

Ladybird, ladybird fly away home?
5092POLO Village Emporium
Popular with children and adults, how much do we actually know about this mini beast? The ladybird is actually a member of the beetle family and its scientific name is Coccinellidae, meaning ‘little red sphere’. There are over 42 different species in the UK, the most common being the bright red variety that has seven spots.
Egg to adult in 2 weeks
The ladybird starts life as a tiny, shiny, yellow egg, laid in a cluster on a leaf from late spring into summer. Each egg hatches to release a small, black, 6-legged larva which eats greedily and increases in size by shedding its skin three times in its lifetime. The full grown larva eventually attaches itself to a leaf and forms a pupa, from which the adult beetle emerges 1-2 weeks later. Beetles and larvae feed through the summer and ladybirds that hatch early will produce a new generation of beetles during mid to late summer. During its short life span, a ladybird will lay around one thousand eggs. When the colder weather comes it looks for somewhere
58
warm to hibernate for the winter, where it may stay for up to nine months.
Gardener’s friend
Ladybirds are a gardener’s friend as they are a great deterrents against garden pests. They eat aphids that destroy foliage and plants such as roses and tomatoes, their particular favourite being greenfly. They also eat small caterpillars, mealy bugs, mites and even some scale insects. A ladybird will consume around 5000 aphids during its lifetime. Ladybird, ladybird, don’t fly away home. Stay close by and keep looking after our gardens for us!

Why giving it a sniff isn’t enough What food labels actually mean.
For reasons that aren’t really relevant to this article I recently took a food hygiene course. This did two things for me, firstly made me finally accept something I always suspected, me and every other parent I know will happily turn a blind eye to some of the disgusting things our kids occasionally do. Secondly it clarified something that I know from experience many people don’t seem to understand, food labelling. The bottom line is that all your food is likely to be labelled in two ways. A use by date and a best before date. The difference between them is really quite important because food poisoning, as you will know if you have also done food hygiene training, is really very serious and incredibly common. In fact, roughly 1.2 million of us will get it this year and the majority of times we will do it to ourselves. The biggest culprit is undercooked food (bring on barbeque season!) particularly chicken. As an aside, do you wash chicken? I used to until I found out that I was possibly merrily potentially splashing campylobacter around the kitchen when I did.
deteriorated a little, or it will be less crunchy maybe, but most foods with a best before are dried or preserved.
Use by – Do not eat it under any circumstances if
this date has passed. This date is the last time the manufacturer can guarantee the food is safe to eat. Simple as that. Until recently I would assume the food was good even after the use by date if it smelled right. Then I realised that I have no idea what salmonella smells like. Spoiled food clearly stinks and so we know not to eat it but you cannot smell or even taste most sources of food poisoning. So this summer I will playing safe by cooking my food properly and using nothing that could be past its best. Kevin Robinson 13 Media
So, going back to those food labels then, this is roughly what they mean when translated into practical realworld terms.
Best before – You can still eat it. Best before means exactly that. The product is likely to taste better or be fresher before this date.
