What a busy couple of months we’ve had. We’ve moved office to Braunston, right next to the canal and walking distance to work – when it stops raining! The Towcester Food Festival Guide is celebrating its 5th year and its bigger and better than ever and The Village Emporium is 13 years old. The test of time just gets better and proves that readers use print to source fantastic local traders and can trust and enjoy the messages that drop through their letterboxes. Thank you readers, customers and anyone else that knows us! We love our job.

Step back in time…. Local to you
Naseby – changing history Wandering through Naseby today it is hard to imagine that this sleepy corner of Northamptonshire was once the setting for such a significant milestone in English history. This was where the decisive battle of the English Civil War was fought on 14th June 1645, often known as the ‘turning point’. It is important to remember that without this battle and the parliamentarian victory, England may have become a very different place – with its monarch still holding absolute power. The decisive victory at the Battle of Naseby settled three long and bloody years of civil war, with a

victory for Oliver Cromwell’s parliamentary forces. It gave Parliament the right to a permanent role in the government of the kingdom.
On that day, 1645… The battleground was made up of open sloping fields at this time and so the Royalist (Cavaliers) and Parliamentarian (Roundheads) could position their armies strategically. Prince Rupert had his army up on the higher ground and the Parliamentarians began lower, giving the Royalists a perceived advantage and

tempting them to begin the attack. However, when the Royalist cavalry attacked the Parliamentarian cavalry and chased off the stragglers, Cromwell had another faction of cavalry on the opposite side obscured by trees and hedges. He immediately brought this cavalry out and took the Royalist infantry by surprise, defeating them. Oliver Cromwell was a great strategic commander and is remembered in history for this, and for his political influence. After the execution of King Charles I in 1649, Cromwell effectively ran parliament with his soldiers. Cromwell’s ‘New Model Army’ was headed by Sir Thomas Fairfax who was arguably the more capable commander; yet Cromwell was responsible for the cavalry faction and his ideas and training helped them to become highly successful on the battlefield. The memorial viewpoints for Cromwell, Fairfax and Prince Rupert still stand and can be visited today.
Battle legacy Although the historic battle is centuries old, it is never forgotten. The memory of the Battle of Naseby lives on in village life today. There are various events which are held annually to entertain, such as the Battlefield Bluegrass Festival - a popular music festival celebrating folk and acoustic music. There is also the ‘Babble of Naseby!’ – an evening of hilarious, sometimes thoughtprovoking readings, anecdotes and poetry. The village hall also plays host to a number of regular events for locals to enjoy including classes for pilates, yoga, bowls, and even murder mystery evenings. Events such as these show off the typically English village character, a far cry
from the horrors of war over 350 years ago. There are also some understated signs and information boards, helpfully displayed around the village to tell the story of the battle.
Contrasting times Thankfully, the village is peaceful and quiet today, with two friendly pubs and a tearoom. The locals are friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is that of a typical small English village with amenities such as a church, school, local shop and village hall, all within a short walk from each other. It is easy when strolling around this village to forget that such a monumental battle took place here. The landscape is quiet and serene, providing a stark contrast with the harsh realities of war. Come and take a look for yourself at Naseby, the village with such an important heritage. It is also worth looking a little further afield, including the area around Sibbertoft, Clipston and East Farndon, to gauge the full scale of the battle and visit the various monuments. Tee time! … and a game of golf bingo Like many amateur golfers I’ll be glued to The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this month. I’m a spectacularly mediocre player who occasionally plays a good round, and the hope of repeating that is what keeps me returning to the course. Golf is addictive like that… Almost as addictive is ‘golf bingo’. Never heard of it? Next time you play, tick off as many types of golfer as you can during a round. Bonus points if you’re playing alongside them. Minus points if you’re one of them. The Waggler - Budget speeches don’t last as his preshot routine, and worse it makes no difference. Five full practice swings will be followed by a slice into neighbouring woodland…every time. Mr. Mobile - His phone rings in the middle of your first backswing, it’s an urgent call. He then puts it vibrate where it does just that repeatedly, sounding like an angry hornet trapped in his back pocket. Amusingly, the number of phone calls is usually inversely related to the importance of his job. Seriously, if Obama could play an uninterrupted round there’s no excuse! The Croucher - Reads every putt from every angle… then misses anyway. I may be this man! The Guru - Offering unsolicited advice on everything from your swing to the choice of caddy. It would be so much easier to take if he hadn’t already lost six balls before the third hole.
The Sulker - Every golfer has a bad round or three, but he (nearly always a bloke again…sorry guys) can’t laugh it off, and refuses to drink it off, so storms off instead. The Traditionalist - He dresses like he’s playing in the Ryder Cup circa 1929. I secretly admire his dapper style… but the kids would kill me if I dressed like that. The Chatterbox - Talks over every putt, and all the time you’re setting up for a drive. And you’re never sure if its accidental or whether it’s part of some diabolical masterplan to mess with your game! Mr. Angry - Can throw a toddler-worthy tantrum over a missed six-foot putt. It’s both amusing and cringeworthy and you can’t take your eyes off it. The Blamer - It was the sun, the wind, a passing pigeon, a buzzing bee, celebrations from the next hole, a bad back, a gippy tummy, a fight with a spouse…anything in fact except their lousy swing. Anyone call ‘House’ yet? Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to practice my waggle? VE Designer ( and mega golf enthusiast )

Rhythms of the year From Hereabout Hill by Seàn Rafferty From Hereabout Hill the sun early rising looks over his fields where the river runs by; at the green of the wheat and the green of the barley and Candlelight Meadow the pride of his eye. The clock on the wall strikes eight in the kitchen the clock in the parlour says twenty to nine; the thrush has a song and the blackbird another the weather reporter says cloudless and fine. It’s green by the hedge and white by the peartree in Hereabout village the date is today; and the time is the springtime the first of the month and the month is May. I adore this poem; it really captures the essence of the time of year through colours, sounds and light. This is the perfect season for exploring the great outdoors, whether in your garden, across the fields or along the hedgerows.
26
I was lucky enough to have a childhood in the heart of the countryside, which meant being outside much of the time; watching the weather, playing out till late on summer evenings, picking and eating fruit and veg and knowing the ground was warm enough for planting seeds. I learnt the names of the trees bursting with blossom, how to identify plants from their emerging leaves and most importantly to me as a florist now, the seasonal flowers month by month – my Mum showed me how to cut and condition a bucketful of ingredients ready for arranging in vases for the house. In this way, knowing and feeling the seasons became a way of life for me and still helps shape the rhythm of my year. If you can, make the time to get outdoors today: see the hedgerows and fields gradually transforming from the dusky greys, browns and purples of winter to vibrant greens, pinks and yellows of spring and summer. Feel the weather on your face, stop and listen to the birds, look closely at the blossom and flowers, sow some seed and enjoy everything this season brings! Rugby – birthplace of the game. With two clubs in Warwickshire and Northamptonshire playing Premier League & European Rugby Union, Wasps and Northampton Saints, plus dozens of amateur and semi – professional clubs, the game of Rugby Football is an integral part in the lives of many men, women and young people across our counties. When in 1823 Rugby School boy William Webb Ellis is reputed to have shown `a fine disregard for the rules of football, as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it`, to the writing of the first formal set of rules at Rugby School, the town of Rugby, holds a unique position as the `birthplace of the game`. For anyone who loves the game, a visit to the town has become a `must do! It’s the reason why thousands of rugby fans flock to the town of Rugby every year to make the pilgrimage to the proud home and birthplace of the game. Which is exactly what I decided to do! My first stop was the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum, a small `free` museum located less than 100 yards from the iconic William Webb Ellis statue outside Rugby School. The museum is situated at the rear of the shop where William and then James Gilbert, originally boot and shoe cobblers, have been manufacturing hand stitched rugby footballs for over 180 years. If you are lucky, there may be a leather craftsman stitching a rugby ball, on the day of your visit!
origins, the famous players, the development of game and the ball. I learnt about the traditional manufacture of the rugby ball from its origin as a pig’s bladder to the highly technical production of today. A short walk later and I was outside the state-of-the-art World Rugby Hall of Fame, which is located on the first floor of the striking Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, which has a distinctive glass front to all three storeys. In 2016 Rugby town was honoured to be chosen as the home for this brand-new visitor attraction, with the full support of World Rugby. Here I was able to experience rugby’s great players and the moments that defined the sport. I was taken on a stimulating journey through time using the latest HD touch-screen technology. It is a journey that takes the visitor from the game’s humble origins at Rugby School to the huge global sport that it is today. I read about the changes the game has undertaken, how the game went from being an amateur sport to professionalism, its inclusion as an Olympic sport and I considered the social values that unites the sport from community to elite level. The Hall of Fame also celebrates the 137 players and places that have contributed to the game, with new inductees every year. If you fancy a walk around town after viewing the museum, you could follow the Pathway of Fame, a trail of bronze pavement plaques which celebrates the icons of the game.
There is a wealth of rugby memorabilia displayed in the four themed areas, including history about the games

The Travel Locker…. Local to you
To conclude my tour, I finished where it all started, at Rugby School. A tour of the school and its museum is recommended. The school is steeped in history and is full of old world charm, but for the devotees of the sport, a visit to The Close, to view the sacred turf where the game began, is a must. Sporting memorabilia to be seen includes ancient rugby balls, an original ‘death cart’ used to trundle away injured players, and the very first ‘caps’ from the game’s beginnings. Make sure you get a selfie with the bronze plaque on the wall, commemorating the day William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it, into the history books. Although the game has changed beyond all recognition since William Webb Ellis created history in 1823, its heart remains in the town of Rugby. For rugby fans, a visit to Rugby offers the unique opportunity to visit the place where it all began, a chance to discover the heart of the game. Pressing the right buttons – online safety for kids is not about taking away the tech. Access to data What is and isn’t safe online is a genuine issue. You probably saw Mark Zuckerberg head of the largest social media platform Facebook having a little chat with the US Congress not so long ago about this very issue. It was like watching a teenager explaining Instagram to their Granny. If you have children, you are probably worried about what they are up to when on the internet. Good for you, you should be, the internet is potentially a dangerous place. However, the sea, or an angry dog or a busy street are also potentially dangerous. So, is the answer not let your children have access to the beach, animals or the outside of the house? No? Not practical? Would it result in taking away a part of growing up perhaps?
Being online Well, here is a thought for you. For the current generation of children access to the internet is as much a part of life
56
as watching TV was for us. So, unless you are raising your children dramatically out of step with the mainstream, they are online. The danger in the internet is sort of the same as the danger from sea. It isn’t the water itself – it is being swept away by it. So, we teach kids to swim because we know given the opportunity they will paddle in the waves. So, when it comes to the online world. • • • •
Learn about it yourself Teach them to recognise danger Empower them to make the right choice Trust them to make the right choice but make it clear to them that if they don’t they have access to an adult who will listen and understand – Hence my first bullet point in this list.
It is simply unfair to take a child to the beach and say, ‘don’t get wet’ because getting wet is fun. Online is the same as the ocean. Let them have their fun and paddle but teach them when and how to swim safely to shore. Kevin Robinson 13 media

The world’s best dad Made up day? When someone mentions Fathers’ Day a chorus of, ‘made up day’ and ‘invented by greeting card companies’ may follow! So is Fathers’ Day really just the product of a boardroom meeting at Hallmark or Clintons?
Origins There is evidence that a Babylonian boy named Elmesu, carved some sort of greeting on a clay tablet 4000 years ago wishing his father health and long life, but that’s pretty much it for the evidence until about 100 years ago. The most common theory about modern Fathers’ Day is that it originated in the US, and with one particular lady, a Mrs. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. She felt that just as we dedicate a special day to mothers, so we should do the same for fathers. It meant a lot to her, because she and her siblings were raised in a loving manner by her own father after her mother died in childbirth. So she began a campaign, and the first Fathers’ Day was held on June 19th (her father’s birthday) in 1910. It grew in popularity and in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson
signed a proclamation declaring that the third Sunday in June would be Fathers’ Day.
Leap across the Atlantic Now the waters become murky. How did Fathers’ Day make the leap across the Atlantic? No-one seems to know, but it’s likely that – in the manner of other American traditions - it gradually seeped into the British consciousness. Greetings cards manufacturers definitely played their part though. Never ones to miss a trick, they began producing cards and we bought them. It seems that in the UK, Fathers’ Day really took off in the 1970s but, unlike in the US, it’s never been declared an ‘official’ day.
Dad’s role Still, as traditions go it’s a nice one. The role of dads has changed a lot in a generation. Most now take on a substantial amount of child care and are much more hands-on than their own dads were. Research shows that dads who are involved in day-to-day childcare are key figures in helping their children develop good self-esteem and self-confidence. Their rough-play helps children learn a sense of control and independence.
Dads are important, so let yours know how much you love him this Fathers’ Day 17th June. 60

I have a special interest in caring for people living with dementia and have undertaken several courses in this area. I am looking forward to meeting the needs of the residents at Longlands, and delivering high quality care for everyone who uses our service.” Sarah will lead a team of 70 staff who provide high quality care. By Sarah’s side will be local lady Lisa Duffy.
Lisa joined Longlands 11 years ago as a support worker and has worked hard to become the Deputy Manager. Operations manager Barbara Hadley said: “Longlands is part of the Shaw healthcare portfolio throughout Northamptonshire. The service changed from a rehabilitation and respite centre to a care home three years ago. Our latest CQC rating in September was an overall GOOD for this home and I am confident Sarah will lead this service well.” If you are interested in our care services, please contact Sarah or Lisa, who will be happy to help or arrange a visit. Summer Solstice 2018 When June Solstice (summer solstice) is on Thursday, 21st June. In most locations north of Equator, the longest day of the year is around this date. It is 8 hours, 49 minutes longer than the December Solstice (winter solstice) which is on Friday, 21st December. The summer solstice (also known as midsummer ), occurs when a planet’s rotational axis, or geographical pole on either its Northern or its Southern Hemisphere, is most inclined toward the star that it orbits. On the summer solstice, Earth’s maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°. The Earth is farthest from the Sun during the June solstice, the North Pole is tilted towards the Sun, causing summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is winter because it’s tilted away from the Sun.
Stonehenge Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, two miles west of Amesbury. It consists of a ring of standing stones, with each stone standing approximately 13 feet high, seven feet wide and weighing around 25 tons. Although it’s one of the world’s most famous monuments, the prehistoric stone circle known as Stonehenge remains shrouded in mystery. Built on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, Stonehenge was constructed in several stages between 3000 and 1500 B.C., spanning the Neolithic Period to the Bronze Age.
English Heritage are again expected to provide “Managed Open Access” for around 20,000 people to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice. Sunrise is at 4:25am. The solstice itself is at 10.07GMT.
Durrington Walls Around 2500 BC, the people who built and used Stonehenge probably lived at Durrington Walls, which was a large settlement about two miles away. Over 38,000 discarded animal bones have been found there representing at least 1,000 animals. Of the bones and teeth excavated at the site, 90% were from pigs, and the rest mostly from cattle. Many still had meat attached to them when they were discarded, suggesting that there was more than enough food to go round. Some of the bones have cut-marks made by flint tools, showing that beef was cut up into pieces. Burnt foot bones suggest that pigs were often roasted over open fires. Both Stonehenge and some of the timber monuments at Durrington Walls were built to align with the movements of the midwinter and midsummer sun. It is possible that people were feasting at Durrington Walls, before going off to witness the midwinter sunset at Stonehenge?
Visiting Stonehenge It is possible to walk up to and among the stones at Stonehenge outside public opening hours on special access visits. During these sessions of one hour duration, up to 26 people are allowed onto Stonehenge, going beyond the barriers and walking amongst the stones.

Anyone for tennis? It’s Wimbledon fortnight 2nd-15th July How it all began A broken pony-roller belonging to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was the catalyst which led to the birth of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon. When the roller broke in 1877 the members decided to hold a lawn tennis competition to raise funds for repair. There were 22 male competitors who each paid a one guinea entrance fee. The champion was 27-year-old Spencer Gore who won 12 guineas and yes, it did rain on the day of the finals! In spite of the weather the competition was such a success that it became an annual event. In fact there have been only ten Wimbledon-free years since that first competition: four years during the First World War and six during the Second World War.
Gentlemen’s singles At the start the only event was the gentlemen’s singles. Then, in 1884 the ladies’ singles and the gentlemen’s doubles were added, followed by the ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles in 1913. Only top-ranked amateurs were allowed to play until 1968 when the tournament became ‘open’, meaning that professionals could finally enter.

The British dominated The Championships, as they are known, for the first 30 years: Ernest and William Renshaw, and Laurie and Reggie Doherty were national heroes. But our winning streak didn’t last. Until recently the last British man to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in 1936. He won a hat trick of titles just before the Second World War. Then, in the glorious summer of 2013 Andy Murray finally brought the title home to Britain and won the heart of the nation.
Wimbledon: fascinating facts The first black person to win Wimbledon was a woman, the American Althea Gibson, in 1957 and 1958. The first, and only, black male to win was Arthur Ashe, who beat Jimmy Connors in 1975. The last British woman to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the silver Jubilee year, 1977. It is the only tennis competition where players are required to wear all or predominantly white clothing. In 2002 Anna Kournikova had to change her black shorts for white ones on court! Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon.
