A door wreath is not just for Christmas…
‘Don’t put it in the bin! Sue might be able use it...’ My friends tell me this is a phrase used often when they are gardening because they know I will be delighted by any gift of a bit of unusual foliage, seed heads, berries, dried flower heads, trailing vines… the list goes on… …but along with these generous donations and the bounty I collect from the hedgerow, I have a constant source of endless possibilities to create a never ending supply of wreaths to adorn my door!! Although a door wreath has become synonymous with Christmas, I try to have a wreath of some sort on my door all year round. I generally use a mossed base or an oasis ring that can be kept wet to prolong life. My wreaths are transient but the creative process of ‘placing and arranging’, the challenges of floral mechanics and a chance to experiment with the ‘lasting’ value of different natural materials, all makes me very happy. It pleases my neighbours too, who often comment favourably and are always keen to mention if the door is bare - because I’ve been too busy to make a new wreath! Above are a few of my favourites from throughout the year; But if you would like me to make a Christmas wreath for your door then do ring me soon - my order

Shop local this Christmas And teach your children the value of supporting your local independent stores. The last few of these articles have been about kids going off to university or starting new schools but this one is about them being at home.
one of the smaller independent stores. Have a few cards made for the special people in your world or go and learn a craft with one of our many local experts.
First off, let’s agree that despite our occasional grumbles the majority of us like where we live or we would have found a way not to live there anymore. Regardless of which version of good old Village Emporium you are reading this in you are, to some extent at least, part of the community. It is the community our older kids will come back to from uni and the one that the younger ones will learn to ride their new bike around on Boxing day. It may not be perfect but it is yours.
Spending time with your family
Can I ask a small favour?
What I suggest is that instead of buying Uncle Fred a gift off the internet, spend the money on something from your local community and get the kids involved when you do, because one day it may be them setting up a small shop in your town. If you look around you will find everything from people who make tree decorations and wreaths, through to farmers who will provide you with the best produce for the Christmas dinner. Go hunting through the nearby antiques shops for a present or spend some money in
Here is why I want you to do this. Christmas, in whatever way you celebrate it, is an opportunity to spend some time simply having fun and enjoying our families and friends. What I want you to do is spread that a little further with this one small gesture of support. To us, it is a minor difference, but if enough of us do this, to the artisans, craftspeople, food producers, merchants, shopkeepers and other local businesses we visit it will be a Christmas boost. It will be a moment of thanks for our communities. And why take the kids? Well, if they pick this habit up and continue it then wouldn’t that be a brilliant tradition to start? If we teach them the community matters it will matter to them. Have a great Christmas one and all. Kevin Robinson Creative Director Media Arts 13

Beautiful furniture for beautiful homes Rugby Home Furnishings a personal service
More than you can see in store
Nick at Rugby Home is a great believer in offering his customer a personal service which you cannot get in the larger chain stores. Being an independent business means he can take the time to sit down with customers and find out their needs for making their homes beautiful.
There is a huge range of products that Rugby Home has access to in addition to what can be seen on display in the store! Nick can actively search for and source products for customers to suit their individual needs almost like a personal shopper.
Top brands in store
There is a huge range of mirrors, gifts and furniture for the living, dining and bedroom in store to add those finishing touches to any room in the house.
Rugby Home sells top brands such as Hypnos, Parker Knoll, Wade Upholstery, Gascoigne Designs and Elstead Lighting which are more often than not, LESS expensive than the larger chain stores coming to Rugby with a much wider choice of fabrics and giving either a 25 year, or in the case of Wade, a Lifetime Warranty on their furniture.

A new look for is the double poms which is a change if you feel you want a different look for this Winter. How about and in In true NU style – rock-grunge glam they have created a black beanie with a mesh veil. Other inceptions include pearly beanie pom hats, animal pom beanie hats, in fact hats for all occasions.
Kimono/scarves
A fairly new brand, One Hundred Stars, only founded in 2015 by Sheffield siblings Heather and Rona Stevenson. After running a lifestyle store spanning two decades they fulfilled a dream by injecting their whimsical and lovely taste into a clothing business. If you love London, Paris and New York – these are just for you. Add a splash of vibrance to any outfit with the travel inspired map prints. A fashion bloggers favourite is the kimono or gown in the same prints or other exciting prints layered over a simple plain jersey or a white shirt and jeans or alternatively a slinky black jersey slip dress..
Handbags
Bell and Fox are a luxurious, contemporary real leather handbag range that draws on British heritage and vintage silhouettes with a modern tweak.
Choose a circular cross-body or a rectangular wristlet in gold foil printed or gold stitched textures and designs onto leather. Branding is even quirky yet sophisticated for this brand, forget obvious names and slogans instead they add a little non-working bell or foxes tail as a zip pull or a very subtle little gold ampersand.
Contemporary jewellery
Esa Evans, a fine art graduate from Sheffield Hallam University creates a contemporary and confident collection that goes beyond typical fashion trends. Esa collaborates with street artists and illustrators that are forging a name for themselves in the art/design world as well as the William Morris gallery. Try the honeycomb range, swallow brooch and witty gin and prosecco necklaces that resonate with many women.
Boho charm
From the makers of our well-loved, sartorial tassel necklaces Tribe and Fable have conjured up the pom and tassel hangbag charm / keyring and it is absolutely gorgeous! Be charmed by its boho luxe. Maybe you would like the tassel necklaces also in their sumptuous colour mixes of a winter colour palette meticulously made with beautiful beads and threads whilst also being chanelled with good energy from the Balinese tribes women that make them – no wonder they are so popular. New Christmas regulations A light hearted 21st century look at our much-loved Christmas songs Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road, Got to keep on plodding onwards, with your precious load…
The RSPCA has issued strict guidelines with regard to how heavy a load a donkey of small stature is permitted to carry. Also in the guidelines are permitted feeding breaks, and at least one rest break in a four hour plodding period. The ‘Little Donkey’ has expressed his discomfort as being labelled ‘Little’ and would prefer to being simply referred to as ‘Mr Donkey’. Comments upon his height or otherwise are considered to be a breach of his equine rights.
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose, And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows, All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names, They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games...
Under the Equal Opportunities Policy, it is inappropriate for persons to comment upon the ruddiness of Mr. R. Reindeer’s nose. Name-calling contravenes our AntiBullying policy and the exclusion of Mr. R. Reindeer from games is discriminatory; disciplinary action will be taken against anyone perpetrating this offence. Sanctions may include a ban on hanging up stockings or participating in Christmas dinner.
Little Jesus sweetly sleep, do not stir, We will lend a coat of fur, We will rock you, rock you, rock you, We will rock you, rock you, rock you…
Fur is inappropriate wear for small infants due to the risk of allergy and for ethical reasons. Faux fur, a cellular blanket or micro-fleece material should be considered alternatives. Only persons who have passed a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be permitted to rock Baby Jesus and must be prepared to provide three forms of identification before any rocking commences.
Dashing through the snow on a one-horse open sleigh, Over fields we go – laughing all the way…
A Risk Assessment must be submitted before any member of the public boards an open sleigh. This should review whether a single horse is sufficient – particularly if passengers are of larger proportions. To avoid offending non-participants and comply with noise restrictions, it is required that only moderate laughter is used.
While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The Angel of the Lord came down, And Glory shone around
The Union of Shepherds has complained that it breaches Health & Safety Regulations to insist the shepherds watch their flocks without appropriate seating arrangements being provided. Shepherds have also requested that, due to inclement weather, they should watch their flocks via CCTV cameras in centrally heated shepherd observation huts. Before The Angel of the Lord shines his/her Glory all around, the shepherds must be issued with glasses capable of filtering out any harmful effects of UVA, UVB and Glory lighting.
We three Kings of Orient are, Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, Moor and Mountain Following yonder star…
Whilst the gift of Gold is still considered acceptable – as it may be redeemed at a later date through such organisations such as ‘Cash4Gold’ etc., gifts of Frankincense and Myrrh are not appropriate due to the risk of oils and fragrances causing allergic reactions. It is not recommended that traversing Kings should rely on star navigation, and would advise the use of AA RouteFinder or Sat Nav. The three camels require regular rest and food breaks and facemasks for the three Kings are obligatory due to the likelihood of desert dust disturbed by the camel hooves.

Stir up Sunday Stir up Sunday is on Sunday 26th November. The tradition dates back to Victorian times, when the family would gather together to stir the Christmas pudding the Sunday before advent began. The opening words of the Book Of Common Prayer, read on this Sunday before Advent, are ‘Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord’, which is probably where the name came from.
clothing Stockists of lifestyle for men & wo men
Originally Christmas pudding contained 13 ingredients said to represent Jesus and his disciples. It is stirred by each member of the family from East to West, to remember the Wise Men that visited Jesus in the Nativity Story. This is the point where you make a wish though no-one knows when that was added to the tradition. Charms were often added to the pud and said to bring luck if you found them in your portion on Christmas Day. Historically the lucky charms were a silver coin for wealth, a wishbone for luck, a thimble for thrift, a ring for marriage, and an anchor for safe harbour. Later coins were often used instead. As needing expensive emergency dental treatment is definitely NOT considered lucky it might be wise to forgo that particular tradition nowadays or at least give your serving a thorough inspection before you tuck in. The traditional sprig holly on top of the pud was said to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus on the cross. Holly and its berries are extremely toxic so it might be better to stick to artificial greenery. As to why we set fire to the pudding, no-one seems to know. One theory is that the flames represent the power of Christ, another is that Christian traditions mingled with the midwinter festivals of light, and the pudding, with its high alcohol content was simply a good candidate for being ignited!

Is the printed business directory dead? On 1st September 2017 the owners of the UK Yellow Pages directory announced that it is to stop its print run from January 2019. With origins in the UK in 1966, the Yellow Pages has been struggling since it was taken over in 2013 and now seems to have given up on the printed listings market to focus on becoming an entirely digital business Some might jump to the conclusion that this news is concerning or even disappointing. But – from where we’re standing and our experience in the industry – we’re in a good place!
The internet isn’t for everyone
The fact remains that over six million people in the UK are not online and have little or no access to the internet. Studies show that people retain information better through interaction with a physical medium, such as leafing through a magazine. Some people are also suspicious of internet search results with the paid or “sponsored” results usually given the most prominence. Our experience here at The Village Emporium is far removed from that of the Yellow Pages. We continue to grow and take great pride in serving the communities within which we operate. After 12 years in the local advertising business we think we know a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. Unlike the Yellow Pages we were never only about business advertising, our mission has always been to become much more than that.
More than a business listing
our 3 editions now cover two counties and over 30,000 households. We also publish annual festival programmes for the highly regarded Towcester Food Festival and Northampton Winter Food Festival. More than just a business listing, up to 25% of our regular content is editorial. We know from our research that The Village Emporium is widely read, used and retained by local residents as a first-class resource for anything community-related, from events to local news and lifestyle matters, to finding a local trader. We’ve never claimed to be a Yellow Pages and that’s our core strength. Many people see our hand-delivered publications as an invaluable guide to what’s going on in their neighbourhoods as well as a handy reference tool should the need arise.
Be part of our growing community
For local businesses, our advertising space costs much less than you might think and delivers great value for money. Our distribution is guaranteed so you can be confident that every household will receive a copy. Just as video never killed the radio star, and e-readers never killed real books, at The Village Emporium we don’t believe that the internet has killed printed magazines. Just the opposite, in fact!

Banish those winter blues The clocks have gone back, with less daylight and longer nights, and for some this can bring on a condition known as SAD, seasonal affective disorder. Although, the exact cause of SAD isn’t fully understood, experts theorise that a lack of sunlight might stop a part of the brain called the hypothalamus working properly, affecting the production of the key mood and sleep hormones, melatonin and serotonin. It’s also considered that lack of vitamin D synthesis, normally a process of the sun on the skin, can affect mood, and the Government recommends that everyone in the UK supplements with appropriate vitamin D from October to March to protect against deficiency. Interestingly, in addition to recommending vitamin D during the winter months, leading ethical vitamin company Viridian Nutrition has just unveiled the spice saffron as the ‘Viridian Ingredient of the Year 2018’. Experts at Viridian Nutrition have forecast the vibrantred spice will be significant in the world of health in the year ahead. Saffron, which comes from the stigmas of the delicate Crocus sativus flower, has a long history in traditional healing and as a culinary spice. In modern times, its health properties have attracted considerable scientific interest. Chief among them are studies on its
60
uplifting and antidepressant activity, and research into enhancing cognitive ability. Crocus sativus is native to Southwest Asia, but the mostprized saffron is cultivated in Iran. The flowers usually produce three stigmas which are gently hand-harvested in October, farm workers then carefully separate these rust red strands from the petals. It is this labour-intensive harvest that is responsible for its costly reputation. Indeed, weight-for-weight, saffron is more expensive than gold. Interestingly though, the recommended intake as a food supplement is a purse-friendly 30mg daily. After reviewing a vast array of nutrition and herbal research, and speaking with leading influencers, Viridian Nutrition has duly recognised saffron, naming it the ‘Viridian Ingredient of the Year 2018’ in further anticipation of its positive influence on health. Saffron has been endorsed by numerous experts including Medicinal Chef, nutritionist and author Dale Pinnock, said: “We all know saffron from Spanish cookery, but there’s some really interesting research published

Feature over the last few years that shows when taken in supplemental form, as a concentrated extract of about 30mg a day, there could be interesting influences on depression - and it has been compared with well-known herbs like St John’s Wort.” Saffron extract together with vitamin D could prove to be the right programme to help you banish those winter blues. Afterwards, he’ll run an interactive demonstration teaching traditional ferments like sauerkraut and kimchi. The Poppy Factory Major George Howson was an engineer. He was a man of great energy and determination. He won the military cross in WWl. He was addicted to strong Turkish cigarettes and bought them 10000 at a time. He was also the founder of The Royal British Legion Poppy factory!
Silk poppies Through the work of Anna Guerin of France and Moina Michael of the USA, both very practical women who took Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s famous poem, “In Flanders Fields”, and devised a way of raising vital funds for wartime charities. The British Legion had been set up the year before and the very first French Poppy Appeal – using silk poppies made by widows - had raised £106,000. In 1921 the first British Poppy appeal was held. In the first year the poppies were imported from France and there was huge demand as poppies quickly became the icons of remembrance. The Major made a connection; Remembrance Day needed poppies and wounded exsoldiers needed work. In a letter to his parents he spoke of using a £2000 cheque he had been given to set up a factory to, ‘…give the disabled their chance.’ He wrote that he felt the project would probably not be successful but that he ought to attempt it anyway.
Leading ex-servicemen He set up The Disabled Society in London with just five injured ex-servicemen, and in spite of his initial lack of optimism, in few years that had grown to 350 men. He set up a sister factory in Edinburgh to supply poppies to Scotland, and the London factory moved to
66
larger premises near the Thames in Richmond and was renamed The Poppy Factory. As time went on the needs of veterans changed. They wanted to work in their own communities, closer to their families and to use the many and varied skills they had acquired during their careers in the armed services, prior to becoming injured.
Finding work In 2010, The Poppy Factory began to actively help disabled ex-servicemen find the work they wanted in the places they wanted to be. It continues to build on its strong historical foundations to provide an employability service that supports hundreds of ex-service personnel with varying health challenges into meaningful employment with businesses across the country every year. Moina Michael was an American professor. She wrote a response to McCrae’s poem in 1918 entitled We Shall Keep The Faith. She vowed to always wear a poppy as a symbol of Remembrance for those who served in the war. She realised the need to provide financial and occupational support for ex-Servicemen after teaching a class of disabled veterans at the University of Georgia, and so she pursued the idea of selling silk poppies to raise funds for them.
