pssst - can you keep a I needed a house warming present for a ‘particularly difficult to buy for’ friend. You know the kind I mean, the’ has everything, wants for nothing’ type! I was moaning about my dilemma to another friend and she rather reluctantly told me about this place just outside Daventry. She wasn’t keen on sharing (why do I have such difficult friends?) but I got it out of her and next day, I went and had a look. Wow! As soon as I walked through the doors I found myself immersed in treasures! Delightful, charming, imaginative treasures. I spotted a massive wall clock that would look great in my hallway; a silver heart wind-chime which would be perfect against my kitchen window; a giant teacup, wall hooks made of flipflops, silver cats, wooden owls, Moroccan garden lamps.......

It was a lot bigger than I’d imagined (my reluctant friend playing it down I guess!) and actually their main focus is woodburning stoves - they have loads to look at! The people there were lovely, really chatty. They were putting together their summer range of garden furniture which looked as enticing as the rest of their stuff (there was a chunky teak bench which would fabulous on my patio....). And then I remembered! My mum had bought an amazing giant hammock a few years ago. She’d always been vague about the exact location of the shop where she’d bought it from.............but this was it! So my Mum had been in on the secret too!

secret??

So, did I get a present for my ‘difficult to buy for’ friend? Of course. I got her a big brown leather hippo footstool. She will be impressed....and intrigued....and will I tell her where I bought it from? Hmm, now that it’s my secret to keep, I might just hang onto it for a little while longer.........

(ps - here’s a clue, it’s on this page...promise not to tell anyone!)

Waste not want not!

Creamy Vegetable Crumble A great dish for leftover cheese. Try using different cheeses as variations. Choose which is on offer – a soft cheese with garlic and herbs is good in the sauce, and Stilton works well in the topping in place of the Cheddar. Ingredients: 2 Vegetable stock cubes 2 Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 2 Carrots, peeled and cut into chunks 2 Parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks 2 Leeks, washed and cut into thick slices 198g can Sweetcorn, drained 1 tbsp Cornflour (optional) 110g packet Soft goat’s cheese Salt and freshly ground black pepper 110g (4oz) Plain flour 50g (2oz) Butter, cubed 110g (4oz) Mature Cheddar cheese, grated Method: Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. Pour 1 litre (1¾ pints) of water into a large saucepan and bring it to the boil. Crumble in the stock cubes and stir until they have dissolved. Add the chopped potatoes and carrots. Bring the mixture to the boil, then cover, reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Add the chopped parsnips (180g is about 2 average sizes ones) and leeks (again about 2 average sized ones). Re-cover the pan and bring back to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes until tender. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the vegetables to an ovenproof dish, reserving the cooking liquor. Scatter the sweetcorn over the top of the vegetables.

16

Bring the cooking liquid to a rapid boil, uncovered, and boil to reduce the quantity by about half. If necessary, thicken with cornflour. Remove the pan from the heat and crumble in the goat’s cheese. Stir until the cheese melts, to form a sauce. Season to taste and pour over the vegetables in the dish. To make the topping, sift the flour into a bowl, add the butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs, grate and then stir in the Cheddar cheese (mature is best if you can). Sprinkle this crumble mixture over the vegetables and bake for 20–25 minutes until the topping is golden and the sauce is bubbling. Serve the dish immediately.

Meanwhile in an oven proof dish (which has a lid), place the carrots, onions and celery together with a teaspoon of oil and fry till slightly brown. Then add the Harissa and Ras El Hanout and fry for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes and 1 can of water, drained tin of chick peas, mint, sultanas, apricots and orange juice and zest. Lit from Within The Old Dairy Farm Upper Stowe

Kim Baughan is the proud owner of ‘Lit from Within’ a lovely unique shop where she makes her own range of candles and room diffusers in her workshop. Kim uses natural ingredients and relaxing fragrances in all of her products. The candles are individually hand poured using 100% natural Soya wax which burns cleanly and evenly when combined with a cotton and linen wick. They are fragranced with a blend of natural and fine cosmetic grade oils which are made in the UK to IFRA & EU standards. The fragrance is added to the wax before pouring to ensure an even distribution throughout the candle, the fragrance will be there until the last drop wax has gone. Each candle has a burn time of over 40 hours. The room diffusers use the same high quality fragrance oils suspended in a naturally produced fragrance-free oil, all are individually hand poured. When used with the reeds provided each diffuser will last approximately 12 weeks, longer if less reeds are used, but shorter if you choose to add longer reeds. Candles and room diffusers are available in 12 different fragrances. Why not come and make your own unique Soya wax container candle in our candle making workshops, they last for about 1-2hours depending on size of groups. The cost is £25 per person, this includes all materials to make one container candle and also light refreshments, further candles can be made at extra cost if you wish.

We are pleased to offer individuals and small groups of up to six people the opportunity to come and attend this fun experience which is designed to cater for all levels of crafting skill giving you an insight into the world of candle making. Small groups are held in the main Lit from Within workshop, larger groups are held in the adjacent Hayrack Gallery and are available on dates to suit. Please contact Kim for further details or to enquire about a booking. Telephone 01327 342780 Email enquiries@litfromwithin.co.uk Website www.litfromwithin.co.uk Facebook litfromwithincandles

Gluten-free chocolate & blueberry muffins Makes 12 Ingredients 200 g unsalted butter 50 g gluten-free plain flour or buckwheat flour 1 teaspoon xanthan gum 175 g ground almonds 250 g golden caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 6 large free-range eggs 50 g white chocolate 200 g blueberries Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tray with paper cases.

Melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat, then leave to cool slightly. Meanwhile, sieve the flour and xanthan gum into a bowl, then stir in the ground almonds and sugar. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract, then fold through.

In another bowl, separate the egg whites (keep the yolks for another day). Whisk the whites well for 1 to 2 minutes, or until they start to froth. Then, using a metal spoon, stir the egg whites into the flour mixture a little at a time – you want to keep it as light and airy as possible so make sure you don›t stir too much. Roughly chop and add the white chocolate, along with half the blueberries, then stir briefly to combine.

Divide the mixture between the paper cases, then sprinkle over the remaining blueberries. Place on the middle shelf of the hot oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden and an inserted skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool on a wire cooling rack, then serve. Claire hopkins @ lovemrsh.

Ten years on - local enterprise is thriving

Karen Shuter looks back to the early days… Do you remember Yellow Pages? Back in 2005 this huge tome was the go-to local reference source. But I lived in Kilsby, in Northamptonshire with a Rugby phone number and paying council tax to Daventry. To phone businesses in Daventry, just six miles away, I had to buy, yes buy, the Yellow Pages for Northamptonshire or pay to call Directory Enquiries. And it could be a couple of thousand pounds for businesses to advertise in one, let alone two, Yellow Pages areas.

The first issue Even if they are lucky enough to have a village shop, villagers still need to make a special trip to surrounding towns for so many things that town-dwellers have on their doorstep. So they need a guide to the fantastic independent retailers, often tucked away from the big chain stores. They also need to know what services will travel out to them. And they are loyal customers. So my idea was to tell people in Kilsby and neighbouring villages about what was on their doorsteps. And to give local businesses an affordable way to reach those village homes. My husband came up with the name Emporium – it seemed to sum up the treasure trove of businesses and services we found locally. We planned to deliver to 3,000 homes in spring 2005. I soon realised I had hit on a good idea. Thank you so much to the advertisers in that first issue who backed me. We are proud that they are still advertising with us today and that we have helped them to grow. We delivered the first issue (just in black & white) over a boiling hot May Bank holiday weekend and immediately the phone started ringing from local businesses wanting to advertise in The Village Emporium.

Things began to snowball! I introduced colour in the third issue and then launched a Daventry magazine in 2006. Then came the Northants issue in 2008. People were picking up our magazine and contacting us to ask us to deliver to their village too. So from one magazine with a circulation of 3,000 we have grown to three magazines delivering local businesses to 27,000 homes. Our readers love the magazine and use it so this means advertisers win new business and want to advertise with us. Everybody wins.

Still valued in the internet age The internet has had a huge impact on the way we all do business. But local businesses don’t have the millions of pounds to spend on search engine marketing to rival the online giants so the search engines overlook them. And many readers still don’t use the internet. Recent market research we did showed that a third of respondents never used the internet to search for local businesses andover 90% valued the magazine as a source of local information. So our printed magazine is still valued and used. But we’ve moved with the times too – we have an online version which is mobile friendly to give you access to all that information whether you are at your PC or out and about. We believe it’s all about giving our readers a choice – a choice of local businesses and a choice of ways to contact them, whether by web, phone or personal visit. In 2009 I decided to take on another business challenge – a difficult decision to hand over the reins of a business I had built and loved to someone else. But I am delighted that Ali, Clare, Tracie and Sue along with designer Caroline Smith, have adopted “my baby” and are nurturing and loving it as much as I could possibly do. A fabulous team. I’m looking forward to the next ten years.

Advertising over the years has been essential, we have always advertised in local magazines and found that to be more than adequate, word of mouth is a great form of advertising and by offering a good experience we find that a lot of people come along via someone’s recommendation. We offer horse riding to everyone from the age of 6 years up to any age you feel capable and because it has always been a family run business from my parents farm prices are very competitive making riding available to everyone. We do lessons, accompanied hacking children’s day courses, riding for the disabled theirs something for everyone.

RBS Motor Services Congratulations to The Emporium on their 10th Anniversary. RBS Motor Services have advertised in the Magazine since the first edition in 2005, having been recommended to them by a customer, who happened , coincidentally, to have been RBS’s first ever customer. Time moves on but much stays the same. Richard Ball was one of the business’s founder members in 1988. Gwenda, his wife, became his business partner at RBS, in 2001. The company, now a family business, retains the same aims and principles as it ever did; to provide the enthusiastic, best possible, personal service to our customers and their cars.

Alpine Carpets Congratulations to everyone at The Village Emporium on celebrating their 10th anniversary, what a fantastic achievement! We celebrate our own anniversary in May, 13 years this time round and a lot has happened here at Alpine during that time. Our team has grown every year with the addition of new sales staff and fitters, all of whom have years of experience in the flooring trade. Our showroom has tripled in size, our old shop being converted into a second warehouse for storing a continually growing stock of carpets and vinyl. Flooring trends have changed too. Laminate flooring is still popular but lots of people are opting for real wood and luxury vinyl tiles. Carpet trends have seen the arrival of stripes, in every style and colour imaginable and patterns have, as always, remained popular. We see more and more customers opting for a splash of colour to replace beige, although the huge spectrum

Brethertons celebrates 10 years of growth At Brethertons, we’re proud to have featured in the first ever issue of the Village Emporium ten years ago. We’re celebrating how much we’ve grown and developed in that time, moving into a large, modern, eco-friendly building on Clifton Road in Rugby last year and launching a new brand and website last month! Shaun Jardine, Chief Executive Officer at Brethertons, explains why the time was right for

Fraser James

Village Emporium published a Fraser James advertisement in their first ever publication and have continued to do so over the last xxx years. We decided that it was the ideal advertising opportunity due to the locality of the distribution and also the quality of the magazine which was in line with the product that we produce. Over the years we have gained considerable interest from these adverts meaning that over the last few years we have not felt the need to do any other advertising. Fraser James has grown over the years from a small company with a handful of employees working out of a workshop in Staverton, to a company employing over 20 staff and now running three workshops. Village Emporium has made the sometimes stressful process of advertising a pleasure, the team are helpful and accommodating with assistance with the design of adverts at hand should we need it.

How good can gluten free baking really be? Here in the UK, our appetite for gluten-free food is bigger than ever. According to a recent study by the University of Nottingham, the number of diagnosed cases of coeliac disease has increased four-fold over the past ten years. The knock-on effect of this heightened awareness of gluten is an industry that’s now worth over £174 million. Does this mean gluten-free treats can finally match up to their flaky, buttery baked counterparts? Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and oats that acts as a glue and gives the characteristic stretch to breads and pasta. However, gluten causes problems for many people, but ingredients such as xanthan gum are a great way to replicate this distinctive texture. These days, ingredients like this can be found in larger supermarkets. Natural alternatives can also work well –See our recipe for Gluten Free Muffins which uses a mixture of ground almonds and buckwheat flour (which, despite its name, doesn’t contain gluten, and is available in health food shops). The resulting creation is fluffy, moist and decidedly cakey – anyone would be hard-pushed to resist these with a cuppa.

Access to newer ingredients and better recipes means the gluten-free food scene is positively thriving – arguably, it’s become almost trendy to go without wheat. Emma Goss-Custard, founder of the Honeybuns bakery and café in Dorset, which has grown immensely since its humble beginnings in 1998, agrees. “Whereas gluten-free used to be the poor relative of ‘normal’ food, now it’s vibrant and innovative. New ingredients online and inspirational “free-from” blogs have driven the quality up and brought some much needed fun to the gluten-free baking world.” Whether it’s experimenting with different flours such as chickpea or chestnut, using more scientific ingredients and techniques, or just taking advantage of the brilliant cafés and restaurants with wheatfree offerings, going without gluten has never been so easy. This is good news not only for the rising number of people being diagnosed with the condition, but also for anyone who is interested in what goes into their food and how it makes them feel. A wider knowledge of unusual ingredients and a better understanding of our food can only be a good thing. So now all of us can have our cakes and eat them too.

All about herbs...

Coriander Rich in antioxidants, Coriander is one of the world’s most commonly used herbs. It is green, leafy and strong-smelling with a fresh, citrus taste that makes it an invaluable garnish and flavour enhancer. Both the fresh leaves and stalks are edible, as well as the berries, which are dried and called coriander seeds. For maximum flavour, it is best added to dishes just before serving. A very simple use for any leftover coriander you may have is to make a dipping sauce. This is a fantastic sauce to serve with grilled meat, fish or spicy food. Greek yoghurt is seasoned with lime juice and fresh coriander. It also does well as a dip or spread.

Yoghurt and coriander sauce

Ingredients 1/2 lime, juiced 1 pinch caster sugar 10 fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped 200g Greek-style yoghurt salt and pepper to taste Blend together coriander leaves, yoghurt and lime juice. Add sugar and season with salt and pepper. Serve.

New charity sportive and family cycle event launched by Daventry Cycling Club, to raise funds for The Myton Hospices Daventry Cycling Club is running its first charity cycling event on Sunday 28th June, with rides for all abilities – all entry fees this year are going to The Myton Hospices. The day, which the club plans to make an annual event, offers three routes – a more leisurely 20k which covers the cycle paths of Daventry and takes in the Country Park and reservoir, and more challenging routes of 50k and 106k through picturesque Northamptonshire and Warwickshire lanes and villages. The start and finish are planned to be from Daventry Town Football Club. Routes will be signposted, with marshalls along the way, and mechanical support available. Registration will run from 8.30am to 10.30am on the morning of the 28th.

64

Myton Hospice cares for local terminally ill people, working to give them care and dignity as they come to the end of their lives. The charity needs more than £8m a year to continue offering its services – and is close to the heart of more than one Cycling Club member whose mother and Daventry resident Margaret Ridley spent her last month at the Warwick hospice in September 2014. You can read more about the work of The Myton Hospices at www.mytonhospice.org Cycling Club chairman, Neal Malone, says of the event, “We’re working hard to make this a really good day for everyone, whether you’re new to cycling, just want a leisurely tootle, or you like a challenge with distance and the occasional hill to test those legs. The area around Daventry and Rugby offers some excellent cycling within minutes of the town centres – quiet country lanes, picturesque villages with delightful pubs and cafes for a pit stop – and, if you’re in the mood, the legendary Newnham and Edge Hills. (No, they’re not featuring in our routes this year, but don’t let anyone tell you cycling here doesn’t have its ups and downs!)” The whole event is being run by volunteers. If you would like to get involved, either in the organisation or as a supporter or marshall on the day, please contact lauraquirkelpp@gmail. com. Online entry is just £8 for the short route, £12 for the longer routes, and there is a family ticket for £20. Please add £3 for on the day entries. You can enter here: http://cycleformyton.wordpress.com/. All proceeds are going to The Myton Hospices with the exception of a small admin charge for the use of the British Cycling online booking system. Full information including route maps and how to enter can be found at cycleformyton.wordpress.com.

Improving the health of our ponds, one garden at a time! In recent decades our freshwater habitats have come under increasing pressure from agriculture and the urban sprawl. Many water courses have been altered, redirected, or have become polluted by run-off, and recent research carried out by The Freshwater Habitat Trust found that over 50% of the UK›s ponds were lost as a result of drying or removal during the 20th century. The loss of these habitats has a serious knock-on effect on the many plants and animals that rely on them for their survival. But, it›s not all doom and gloom! There is a great way we can all help - by creating ponds in our gardens.

At this stage of a newly created pond it is also really important to wait for some species to arrive naturally. By adding plants straight away you are actually prematurely ageing your pond before its time and not all species are able to compete with the more vigorous plants and animals that arrive in later stages. Plants may take up to a year to colonise and the first new arrivals may be species such as bulrush. However, invertebrates will arrive much sooner and you will likely see a whole range of bugs and beetles within only a matter of hours if the weather is good.

Extraordinarily, ponds support over 60% of all freshwater species here in the UK, and creating a clean garden pond is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help freshwater wildlife. Garden ponds tend to be much less polluted that those within agricultural land, and whether large or small, freshwater is a valuable habitat for a wide range of wonderful wildlife from invertebrates to amphibians to birds.

If you just can’t wait or wish to plant up your pond with plants of your choice, be sure to only buy native plants. You should also check these plants are present in your local area by contacting your local Wildlife Trust for advice. Be careful that any plants that you buy from garden centres are real natives and check that there aren’t any other plant seeds or fragments attached, this is a common way in which damaging alien species such as Himalayan balsam and Parrot’s-feather enter our ecosystems.

It›s important to dig a pond with shelves as this allows both a ledge for planting and easy access and escape for wildlife. Another really important point to remember is that if you want a wildlife pond it›s best not to add fish. Fish are voracious predators and will eat any larvae, eggs and invertebrates they can!

You can find lots of useful information about pond creation and research at: www.freshwaterhabitats.org.uk

Anyone for Tennis? It’s Wimbledon fortnight A broken pony-roller belonging to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was the catalyst which led to the birth of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon. When the roller broke in 1877 the members decided to hold a lawn tennis competition to raise funds for repair. There were 22 male competitors who each paid a one guinea entrance fee. The champion was 27-yearold Spencer Gore who won 12 guineas and yes, it did rain on the day of the finals!

last. Until recently the last British man to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in 1936. He won a hat trick of titles just before the Second World War. Then, in the glorious summer of 2013 Andy Murray finally brought the title home to Britain and won the heart of the nation. He’s on a high this year having married his fiancé Kim Sears in the spring. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he made this a real fairytale year and won Wimbledon again?

In spite of the weather the competition was such a success that it became an annual event. In fact there have been only ten Wimbledon-free years since that first competition: four years during the First World War and six during the Second World War.

Wimbledon: Fascinating Facts

At the start the only event was the gentlemen’s singles. Then, in 1884 the ladies’ singles and the gentlemen’s doubles were added, followed by the ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles in 1913.

The last British woman to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the silver Jubilee year, 1977.

Only top-ranked amateurs were allowed to play until 1968 when the tournament became ‘open’, meaning that professionals could finally enter. The British dominated The Championships, as they are known, for the first 30 years: Ernest and William Renshaw, and Laurie and Reggie Doherty were national heroes. But our winning streak didn’t

72

The first black person to win Wimbledon was a woman, the American Althea Gibson, in 1957 and 1958. The first, and only, black male to win was Arthur Ashe, who beat Jimmy Connors in 1975.

It is the only tennis competition where players are required to wear all or predominantly white clothing. In 2002 Anna Kournikova had to change her black shorts for white ones on court! Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon.
