International left handers’ awareness day Sunday 13th August Left handers day history
All change for lefties
On 13th August 1992 International Left-Handers Day was launched. It is an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed. This event is now celebrated worldwide, and in the U.K. alone there have been more than 20 regional events to mark the day in recent years – including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess are celebrated, whilst right-handers were encouraged to try out every day lefthanded objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!
In days gone by left-handers may have been forced to use their right hand (at school for example) but nowadays the world is becoming a friendlier place. Tools such as scissors, tin openers, vegetable peelers, knives and tape measures are all available for the non-righthanded.
These events have contributed more than anything else to the general awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design and greater consideration of our needs by the right-handed majority – although there is still a long way to go!!
Though being left-handed might once have been considered a disability, today’s lefties refuse to let it hold them back. “I may be left-handed,” says one, “But I’m always right.”
6
Around 13% of the world’s population are left-handed and since 1976, sinistromanual people over the world have been celebrating their ‘right’ to be left handed!! Left-handedness is controlled by the right side of the brain, which means that lefties are likely to be creative - excelling in music, the arts and media. They are also inclined to be good at ball sports and at anything requiring hand-to-eye co-ordination.

Choices that help keep your kids healthy, and keep you sane! Whether starting infant school or in the last year at university, your kids and their health are a top priority. After all, if your kids are healthy, it’s less stress for you, too.
Food first It’s no surprise that the core to good health, for adults and children, is a colourful and varied diet based around a rainbow of fruit and vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds and good quality fatty fish, and limit meat, sugar and alcohol intake. Choose organic where available to limit pesticides and other chemicals. Plan ahead with batch cooking, involve the kids in food preparation and save the more complicated recipes for the weekend. Always check with your GP or other health professional to get the correct diagnosis for any childhood ailment. With chronic conditions such as eczema, consider working with a nutritionist to devise a diet audit, excluding common triggers such as wheat and dairy for a few weeks and gradually reintroducing to see if symptoms persist or subside.
Immunity Growing children, especially those who don’t eat a varied diet, sometimes don’t get enough vitamins A and C. It’s also difficult to get enough vitamin D through food alone. That’s why the Department of Health recommends that all children aged six months to five years are given vitamin supplements containing vitamins A, C and D
10
every day to support immune health and more. Probiotic supplements have been well studied in children with emerging evidence to suggest they can support a healthy immune system, with potential to reduce infectious illness, sick days, and medication-use including cold and flu drugs as well as antibiotics prescriptions.
Eczema Probiotics have further benefits in reducing the severity of skin issues such as eczema and atopic dermatitis. Specific strains of good bacteria including L Rhamnosus GG, have been indicated for both the prevention and treatment of eczema in infants and children. Look too for an organic fish oil supplement providing omega 3 essential fatty acids to help reduce inflammation.
Nutrition Fussy eating can disrupt an otherwise happy household. Exposing your children to a wide array of colourful foods from an early age and having an ‘always try’ policy whereby everyone must try something before rejecting. Topping up with a good quality children’s multivitamin can reassure parents during the transition from fussy to foodie. For more information, advice and support, visit Sheaf Street Health Store in Daventry or visit the Facebook page.

The Welton soap box derby 2017 Origins of soap box racing The Soap Box is a youth soapbox car racing program which has been run in the United States since 1934. World championship finals are held each July in America. Cars are unpowered, relying completely upon gravity to move. The Red Bull soapbox race is an international event (often televised) in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles.
On your doorstep! Saturday 15th July will bring the 4th consecutive Welton Soapbox Derby. Each homemade dream machine is powered by nothing but gravity and sheer courage!! In previous years, there has been, a fire engine, a helicopter, a narrowboat and a ‘living room’!
This is a great family focussed event. In addition, this year will see a new and extensive shopping village on the park area; food and beverage outlets, and children’s entertainment. Not forgetting award winning real ales from The White Horse and live bands throughout the day and into the night for winner’s celebrations. Street entertainment will start from 11:30am and racing begins, at 12:00pm! For more details and to follow the build up, you can follow all the news on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Or email us @Welton_soapbox@outlook.com
Based in the sleepy village of Welton, Northamptonshire, the true spectacle of racing machines will congregate to compete in a timed downhill race. With a starting grid of 45 teams , and over 70 drivers, this year is building up to be another huge success.
On your marks! The 600 metre race track has the starting grid outside the White Horse pub, with a push start for the length of the pub, and then gravity takes over! Winding down through the village, past the church with a tricky right hand bend; then begins the 120ft drop off with speeds of up to 32MPH into a huge 90degree left hand bend, and then winding down to the finish line outside The Paddocks.

Off to university?
The chicken or the egg? The importance of critical thinking for students. Heading to uni? If you are heading to university this autumn the best piece of advice I can offer (having been both a student and a lecturer) is:
Learn critical thinking now, before you start. If you don’t, it becomes a bit of a chicken or the egg kind of situation. You will be expected to research and provide valid arguments for your lecturers, but you will not have had the experience of researching. You will probably be tempted to use the internet. The internet is the most important advancement since the wheel, but as Henry VIII once said: “39.6 % of facts on the internet are made up”.
Fake news? The problem of fake information is such an issue that Facebook recently took advertising space in newspapers advising people on how to spot it. They basically boiled it down to ‘check the source is valid and think about the likelihood of what it said actually being true’. This can be a problem in itself because often there is a truth, or at least part-truth, at the core of the fake fact to make it convincing. The only way to avoid the pseudo-science and fake news on the internet is to think about it logically. You need to take a step back and look at what you are seeing rather than take it at face value.
18
Let me give you a very quick example. There is clear evidence that the moon landings were faked because the flag the astronauts planted is rippling. Ah-ha proof! Because no air means no rippling! Think about it though and obviously, the flag would flap as it was wiggled and pushed into the ground. See how easy a fact becomes proof of something else?
Use your library My advice is occasionally just to use a good, oldfashioned, library. Woven into the carpet of the Gungahlin Public Library in Canberra is a great piece of advice for students. It reads: ‘Google can bring you back 100,000 answers; a librarian can bring you back the right one’ Neil Gaiman. Your lecturers and librarian teams will have chosen your reading carefully, so you should probably read it. The answer is egg by the way. Dinosaurs laid eggs and were the evolutionary ancestors of the chicken, so the egg came first. The chicken went on to a career crossing roads. Kevin Robinson 13 Media

1. Schedule a minimum of four tweets using a tool such as eClincher or Hootsuite 2. Check your Twitter lists as well as your homefeed and engage with your target audience 3. Post real, live information every day. Where are you going? What has happened in the office? 4. Check Twitter Moments and Trending content. Tweeting popular content will guarantee you extra followers 5. React to your notifications. Thank those who shared your content. Say “Hi” to your new followers. Always have the last word! If you are struggling with content ideas, then feel free to download this eBook – 75 ideas of things to post www.green-umbrella.biz/post75 Ideally you should spend no more than 30 mins a day on Twitter. It is easy to get distracted on this platform, therefore set a timer, or just be aware of the “Oh this is shiny syndrome”

Bring back the buttonhole! Simple and sophisticated, funky or fantastic, it would be a joy to see buttonholes worn again… First buttonhole The name of my flowery business ‘Garden Gate Flowers’, came about because of my obsession with making buttonholes as a child. I was lucky enough to have my own little growing patch in the garden and grew mainly rows of clarkias, stocks and radishes! One day I asked my Dad what I should do with all the flowers – that was after filling ever spare vase to go in our house – he suggested I could make a buttonhole for him. I did! But I didn’t stop there…I made buttonholes for every neighbour and relative – on a daily basis - using my flowers and adding foliage and more flowers from other parts of the garden, and then went out on my little pink bike to deliver around the village throughout the summer holidays!!
Little egg cups ! My skills and interest in different flowers grew and grew…but there are only so many buttonholes that village folk could cope with…so I started leaving them in little egg cups full of water on the table at our ‘Garden Gate’ where we sold eggs and other gluts of veg! They all disappeared and money, mostly half pennies (old money!), were duly donated in the ‘honesty box’ which sat on the table.
if it was my Dad aka The Buttonhole Fairy) because it cemented my lifelong passion for flowers and rather aptly provided the name for my business!
Join the campaign Last June, Garden’s Illustrated magazine started a campaign to ‘Bring Back the Buttonhole’. ‘It would be a joy to see buttonholes once again worn as daily accessories, rather than just for weddings and parties.’ says Charlie Ryrie, (Gardens Illustrated, June 2016) I couldn’t agree more and always wear a buttonhole to compliment my outfit whenever possible, and make one for my husband too. A few little flowers gathered together and tied with a pretty ribbon makes a perfect little birthday gift for a man or women…and of course you could always make them for friends and relatives around the village!! If you would like to have a go at making one and join the campaign, you will find instructions on how to make and wear a buttonhole, on the Blog page on my website www.gardengaterugby.co.uk I’d love to see a photo of your buttonhole! Please send to me via the website or email to: sue@gardengaterugby. co.uk or post on my Facebook page: gardengaterugby

Local fashion designer turns down the bright lights of London Exclusive collections
Small and unique
Since opening her fashion studio in Long Buckby, Nina has quietly beavered away producing what she refers to as ‘dressy daywear and one off wardrobe pieces’. Those ‘go to’ items we all need when we want clothing that’s just a bit different from what’s out there on the high street.
Part of the reason Nina has been successful is because she has chosen to stay small and unique. Her focus is always on the woman herself and how she wants to feel and look in what she wears. Women want quality clothing that’s different from anything else they’ve seen and they also want help and advice on how to find a style that suits them.
Her studio, where she designs and commercially produces her clothing exclusively for her own customers, has occasionally caught the eye of other boutique owners and Nina has been asked to supply the high street on more than one occasion. More recently though, she was asked to supply a much higher end, designer clothing outlet in London. After giving the matter much thought, Nina graciously declined the offer to grow and expand her label to a bigger market. The reason she explained, was that she would need to move to a factory and start producing clothing on a bigger scale. She by far prefers to stick with creating small one off collections keeping them purely for both her online and walk in customers some of which travel from all over the country and are dotted around the world.
There is also some merit in keeping a business unique to its own roots rather than turning it into yet another national high street brand. Local people enjoy having the prestige of a business that identifies with a rare kind of unique quality and Nina believe this forms part of the backbone of a local community. It’s been grown in their back yard and they want to keep it exclusive to them’. Nina’s clothing is a collection of daywear and special wardrobe pieces made from luxury quality fabrics sourced from Italy. Her studio is always welcoming and inviting and walk in customers can visit and see what’s on the rails and what’s in store for the next season. To contact Nina email ninawornham@gmail.com or visit the web site at www.ninawornham.co.uk

Scotch whisky day Why not enjoy a wee dram on Thursday 27th July to celebrate... and discover a little more about the amber nectar with our facts below. Make an exception
whisky when it sold at auction in Hong Kong for $628, 205 in 2015. The luxury decanter contains 6 litres of whisky and stands 28 inches tall.
For countless people around the world, nothing says relaxation after a long hard week like a glass of good whisky. And although drinking in the middle of the week is not something we’d normally recommend, you could probably make an exception just this once, on Scotch whisky day.
The water of life
Liquid gold
The angels’ share
The export of whisky generates a healthy £125 a second for the Scottish government. Just under 38 bottles of whisky being exported from Scotland every second. Laid end-to-end, the 99 million cases of Scotch exported each year would run the distance between Edinburgh and New York – six times.
Single malt, several casks It’s a common misconception that single malt whisky is the product of one cask. In fact, it is the product of a single distillery and may actually come from several casks therein.
Whisky galore! Scotland is home to more than 20 million casks of maturing whisky. That’s almost four for every person living there.
Dram expensive A crystal decanter of Macallan Imperiale ‘M’ whisky scooped the prestigious title of world’s most expensive

Whisky in Gaelic reads ‘uisge beathe’, which means ‘water of life’.
Whisky stored in barrels gradually evaporates at an approximate rate of 2% a year. This is referred to as the famous ‘angels’ share’.
Local heroes The reason so many distilleries rely on local employees – often generations of families – is because it’s reckoned that such workforces produce crucially consistent styles.
Three’s the magic number Scotch whisky can only be called Scotch whisky when it has been left for a minimum of three years to age in casks, in Scotland. Some casks hold whisky for considerably more time than this though.
The art of blending Blended whisky came about at a time when single malt whisky was considerably younger and more harsh than it is today. Blends consist of anywhere from 15 to 50 individual whiskies, testament to the blender’s art.

Book sales soar in support of Air Ambulance as the past gives life to the present Fund raising Book sales for The History of Rugby Radio Station have raised over two thousand pounds and counting to support Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. The book, published by developers of the old mast site Urban&Civic, to preserve the vibrant heritage of the former Rugby Radio Station site, has captured the hearts of the town with its historical account of the radio station where over 800 Rugby locals worked during its time in service. The semi autobiographical memoir, written by local historian and former radio station manager Malcolm Hancock, recounts Malcolm’s 38 years of experience working at the site as well as the groundbreaking first transmission to Houlton, USA in 1927, stories about NASA, Concorde, ‘Messages to Mars’ and the life-saving work of the station during WW2 and The Cold War.
Citizen of the year Due to the success of the book, Malcolm Hancock was a finalist for Citizen of the Year at Rugby FM’s 2017 Pride of Rugby Awards, which took place last Friday, which recognizes individuals whose selfless efforts have left a lasting impression on the lives of others and those who have made a significant contribution to improving life in Rugby borough. With all monies raised from the sales of the history book donated to Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance and each life saving mission costing the Air Ambulance £1,700, Malcolm Hancock has allowed the charity to take on one more life saving mission in support of Rugby locals.

Jo Payne, senior fundraising manager for Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, comments; “I am thrilled to see the book has generated so much interest in the history of Rugby Radio Station, such an iconic feature and represents so much to all of us that live (and fly) in the area. We are so pleased that the proceeds from the sale of the book have been donated to keeping our team saving lives by road and air across the region and would like to thank everyone involved”.
“We are nearly home” With Malcolm Hancock adding, “I am so very pleased to hear that sales of my book on the History of Rugby Radio Station are going so well. The iconic “we are nearly home” 820ft high masts will now not be forgotten! I am also thrilled that, with the help of Urban&Civic, all the proceeds of the book are going to another worthy endeavor, the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. I was surprised and honored to be nominated as Rugby Citizen of the Year but, I am sure, that other locals were much more deserving and congratulate Joanne Finney on her win”. The book, which details the technological advancements that went on within the grade II listed C Station Building, is still available to purchase for £5.99 in Rugby independent book shop Hunts, Rugby’s Library and Tourist Information Centre, Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, both the Visitors Centre and Tuning Fork eatery at the heart of the first phase of Houlton and online at www.rugbyradiostation.co.uk

Flight chic
There’s no need to compromise style for comfort on a flight You might be thinking should we really be worrying about what we wear on a flight. We shouldn’t worry too much but by the same hand we don’t want to look like we are set to clean the house or tend to the garden while on public display. Comfort doesn’t have to compromise style. Read on for a couple of helpful hints and tips.
Standard stripes - classic
Great Plains have a Breton Stripe dress within their SS/17 collection. When on English soil team the dress or tunic with some of our grey leggings, denim jacket and a scarf supplied by A Postcard From Brighton. While up in the skies unpeel your jacket and at times you could even use your scarf as a light blanket covering if you need a little nap. When you exit the plane and you immediately feel the woosh of warm air be sure you have removed your leggings and voila you have a sundress on arrival!
Pyjama chic! what better!
Accessories & footwear
Keep jewellery to a minimum. Jangly metallic necklaces will be a bit of a bother through security and it becomes uncomfortable after a while even though it seemed a good idea when you started getting ready on the morning of your travel day. Your scarf could be more of a necklace feature, if you half the scarf, roll around and twist the separate halves create a more binding effect, put around the neck and tuck the one end into the loop. Personally I could only ever consider flatties, whether we are talking plimsoles, fashion trainers or sandals especially as having experienced long delays at airports. Open a magazine or scroll down Instagram or Facebook and we sometimes see our celebrity favourites in heels as they go through the airport, that’s ok if you have an entourage of groomers and preeners styling you ready to be chauffeured comfortably to your next destination.
Take these Lolly’s Laundry pyjama trousers and team with a cute little cami or a tee. A cami will give an extra dose of luxe. Finish the look with a scarf or long open shirt provided you are a taller woman and this will look so on point.
Make-up and hair
Jumping for joy - holiyay!!
Have your sunglasses at the ready!!
A jumpsuit without any awkward fastenings that you can roll down from the top for extra convenience is ideal. Layer over a little jacket, add scarf and plimsoles or sandals and this will complete this style perfectly.
If you have long hair, wear up or braid to keep it neater and out of the way. Less is more when it comes to make up, a lick of mascara, subtle bronzer and lip balm will feel a bit cleaner and more natural for travel.
Urban cool
Choose trackie bottoms wisely, the more fashionable ones would look fabulous worn with a slogan or a fruit motif tee.

Britain’s waterways – come and explore There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them? Take a stroll From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch at one of the many canal side pubs, to a full day’s hike, Britain’s waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the towpaths are car-free. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com.
Cycle Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan your route with www. sustrans.org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is a good option, with more than 60% of the route being traffic-free and fairly flat.
Enjoy a leisurely boat ride Whether you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways, the slow pace gives you time to enjoy the countryside and spot local wildlife including kingfishers and herons. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off. Visit www.waterways. org.uk for advice and tips.
Try canoeing Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit while exploring the countryside.
Check out www.canoe-england.org.uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability. Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa. You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www.canalrivertrust.org.uk
Feeling adventurous? You might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson.
Cast off A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual licence starts at £27, though you can also buy licences for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches. For more information about Britain’s waterways, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk.

Your local waterproofing & damp specialists Using advanced polymer technology, BKM Mannesmann UK has a unique way of solving waterproofing and damp problems to building materials which lets moisture escape but then keep moisture out for more than 30 -40 years or more. Nic Morse, your new Midlands Technical Manager for BKM, says “Masonry materials are designed to breathe, so moisture must escape naturally. Existing damp treatment products on the market, such as Silicone derivatives of creams and pastes, can’t penetrate building materials as effectively as the BKM products says Mr Morse.
Penetrative & rising damp before and after
Penetrative damp before and after
The BKM process leaves a microscopically sized coating on the pores of the building materials, surface tension then “forces” the moisture out, leaving a dry and moisture free environment. The process is fast developing across Europe as Surveyors and Architects realise the benefits of the product on stone, brick and lime mortars. “We only remove the salt damaged plaster” says Mr Morse, “not 1 mitre up which our competitors do as this old process only keeps the damp in the walls” he commented. A typical installation is clean, doesn’t smell and can be done from the inside or outside of the building. Work is usually completed in a day for a typical house, including any plasterwork and our team have extensive training by our qualified Technicians around the world. We pride ourselves on leaving a house cleaner than when we started!

Top tips for barbeque perfection Gas or charcoal?
Boozy bourbon beef bavette
Gas barbies certainly have their place as they are very convenient and the temperature is more controllable but the flavour of a lumpwood charcoal bbq is second to none. If you choose a slightly larger charcoal barbecue you can light the coals on one side so it enables you to move cooked food to the side to keep warm while other meats are cooking. It is also vital to have space so you can move the food out of the way, especially if you get too much dripping fat which create flames and no one wants cremated food!
Serves 2 500g bavette steak 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 200ml bourbon 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 small bunch thyme 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp salt and pepper
Cooked to perfection Wait until the flames have disappeared before putting the meat on when the heat is intense and coals are glowing. Don’t be afraid to cook through larger pieces of meat, sausages or chicken in the oven first and finish it off on the barbecue to give it that authentic taste
Quick boozy bananas This is so simple with very little prep time.
Be brave! Don’t be afraid to experiment!! Glazes and marinades can make for exciting flavours and something a bit different to your usual steaks, sausage and burgers. Call in to Onley Grounds Farm to see their exciting range of marinated bbq meats or even make you own. You don’t have to spend the earth on barbecue meats as marinades can help to tenderize less expensive cuts.
52
Score bavette against the grain of meat. Put all marinade into a shallow dish. Add meat and cover, turning occasionally. Leave for 12 hours (minimum 6 hrs). Cook the bavette on the barbecue (medium rare is best) and if you don’t want to waste the excess marinade, flambe the liquid in a pan and pour over the cooked meat.
Put whole skin on bananas on the bbq when the heat starts to die down and bake until soft for about 15 minutes! The skins will be completely black. Put each banana into separate bowls and score the banana skin, bend to create a ‘boat ‘. Pour in a good glug of Cointreau and add fresh single cream. For that extra bit of decadence, slowly melted mars bar drizzled over the top is amazing!
