Welcome to The Village Emporium January/February 2016 Another year passes by and probably most people are starting a New Year’s resolution, and possibly finishing it a few days later! The most popular New Years’ resolution of 2015 was to get fit and healthy, something we all may consider each and every year. That said, get out and about and you can take advantage of the great offers with our tea and coffee shops around the region – but maybe have a skinny late or black tea! Enjoy reading, and thank you for supporting our featured local businesses and keeping local local.

Stuff ‘em in a pair of shoes and socks... ...and just ignore them is most peoples attitude to their feet…that is…until they start playing up, then curse them!! Here at Contented Soles Podiatry Ltd. we have a rather different view, prevention being better than cure, Contented Soles Podiatry was established in 2004 by Wanda as a home visit round, and 11 years on it has grown into a very successful practice employing 2 Podiatrists; a foot health practitioner (who is doing his Podiatry degree at Northampton University) and 2 reception staff. We have clinics in Daventry, Long Buckby and Rugby as well as visiting services to nursing homes, local businesses and home visits. The success of this business is down to the friendly, approachable attitude of all our staff, and of course the skill and dedication of the Podiatrists; the moment you walk into the clinic you are treated more like a friend than a client, We believe a friendly, professional atmosphere helps our clients to feel at ease. We treat all age groups from the very young, typically with verrucae, ingrowing toenails and issues around walking; to the very old who often just cant reach their feet to cut their toe nails, or need falls prevention advice and treatment.
Both of our Podiatrists are degree qualified and HCPC registered and our practice is the only one in the area to be Accredited by the Society of Podiatrists, which signifies we meet and exceed the highest standards set by the Society of Podiatrists - no mean feat (pardon the pun)! We’ve listened to our clients feedback, who find it difficult to get shoes that fit and also look good, and as a result have started to sell high quality shoes for people who cannot comfortably fit into high street shoes, stocking brands such as DB shoes, sandpiper, Suave, Place, Strive,Vionics and for those who want a little style locally we are fortunate to have gained the JOSEPH SEIBEL range. We stock both men’s and women’s shoes, and can order if we don’t have what you’re looking for in store. All our staff are fully trained in specialist shoe fitting. In addition we are fortunate, at our Daventry practice to have the services of an excellent Chiropractor, a Reflexologist and Low Level Laser Therapy that can be used for a whole host for conditions with amazing results. So if you want to find out a little more, have a look at our website www.contentedsoles.co.uk, give us a call on 01327878181 or pop in and have a chat – we are open Monday to Saturday.
We are a specialist center for gait analysis and biomechanical assessment, so much so that we have sports people come from up to 70 miles away for expert advice; often, by making very small adjustments to a persons gait – the way they walk and stand can have a significant effect on their efficiency in their chosen sport. We have a 3D laser scanner that models the foot in 3D to enable us to see exactly where adjustments need to be made.

Do something new in 2016, try Geocaching!
I found out about Geocaching on 28th December 2009. It was that lull between Christmas and new year, and this is the time that I set my goals for the upcoming year. One of my goals was to spend less time in front of a computer, and more time in the outdoors. I had received my first iPhone for Christmas (I have always been a bit of a gadget geek!), and while reading through the camping and caravan magazine, planning some trips for 2010 I stumbled upon an article about geocaching. To be honest, it was probably the site of the iPhone on the page and the famous words “there’s an app for that!” that got my attention. I downloaded the app immediately and then posted on Facebook to my friends and family that my daughter and I were heading out the next day to go and find the treasure hidden around Towcester. Five adults and six children turned up at Tescos car park to seek out Tupperware boxes! I’ve never looked back, and now I have geocached all over the world, finding over 700 caches.
10
What is geocaching?
Geocaching is a bit like a modern day treasure hunt. It uses technology to help participants find the hidden treasure. You can use a GPS device (I have a 550t), but most of the time I use my iPhone app (and for those geeks amongst you, there is also an Apple Watch app for caching). A geocache is hidden (not buried), so you will never need to go digging for the treasure. You will often find them at the base of a tree, or under a pile of sticks. The boxes come in all sorts of sizes, from nano caches (about an inch long and these are usually magnetic and are attached to fences or telephone boxes) to large ammo boxes that are full of goodies. Once you have located your geocache, sign the logbook and return the cache to it’s original location for the next person to find. There are often small trinket toys inside which the kids love to swap. The rule is, if you take something out, you must replace it with something new. I have spent many hours geocaching with foster children and the joy you see on their faces when they get to choose a toy is just amazing.

Sign up – it’s free!
If you are looking for something to get you out and about this year, but is not going to cost you the earth then check out geocaching. It’s free to join! I always check out the geocaches when I am on holiday, as you get to explore the local area. You will discover places that you never knew existed! I guarantee that there will be one within one mile of your home, which is always the best way to start. Go on, download the app and click “find nearby caches”
Do it considerately
The principles of geocaching are to promote the local community and to care for the environment. Local geocachers will often have “Cache in Trash Out” days, where they will set a geocaching trail for others to find, but their main goal is to collect litter while doing so. The three primary rules of geocaching are:• Take something • Leave something • Write in the log • Hide it back in the same place that you found it
What do you take when out Geocaching?
My geocaching bag has grown over the years. Please be careful with the things that you take when you are going abroad, though! I was once pulled over at an airport as they though I had a dangerous weapon in my rucksack. It was a telescopic stick with a light on the end. When you are in Florida, the last thing you want to be doing is putting your hands into hollows of trees as you never know what will be lurking in there! (Try explaining that to airport security, though!). This is what I have in my geocaching bag:-
• • • • • •
rings and small bouncy balls. GPS device Poking stick with a light on the end My iPhone also has an extra power pack Mini first aid kit Additional plasters & wet wipes (always handy!) Bite and sting relief cream
My geocaching tips for new starters
Tip #1 - When starting out always look for traditional caches. Puzzles caches, earth caches and virtual caches can be difficult to find, and this can be frustrating. Tip #2 – Always look at the recent logs before you search for a cache. There may be 10 x DNF (Did not finds), which means that it is probably not there. Tip #3 – Look for the geocaching trail. Spotting the caching trail will become second nature when you have been caching for a while, but you will often see trampled grass or broken sticks that will lead you to the cache. Tip #4 – Check out the hints. There is usually a hint with each entry, such as “base of tree” or “hole in the wall”. Some of the hints are a little bit cryptic, and these will put a smile on your face when you work them out, but they usually help. Above all else, have fun, discover new things, get out in the fresh air and climb a tree!
• Tweezers – as sometimes it ‘s hard to retrieve the logbooks • Pencil • Geocaching stamp • Swag – my current swag bag consists of key

Fairtrade Fortnight What did you have for breakfast this morning? Maybe you enjoyed coffee from Kenya , bananas from Colombia , cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire, tea from India, sugar from Malawi or juice from Brazilian oranges. Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries work hard every day to grow the food we take for granted, but ironically they don’t always earn enough to feed their own families. In other words, they do not have food security. Fairtrade is about changing that. Its aim is to secure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. By being paid a fair price, they can have more control over their lives and less worry about how they will feed their families. Fairtrade means many farmers and workers are able to fulfil a basic human need – to put enough food on the table for the people they care about, all year round. When you buy products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, it means that the Fairtrade ingredients they contain have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards. These standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and better business equipment and practices. There are over 4,500 Fairtrade products available in the UK: from coffee, tea and chocolate to
18
beauty products, flowers and gold. One in three bananas bought is Fairtrade, and British consumers choosing Fairtrade sugar sent more than £5 million in Fairtrade premium back to sugar cane smallholders last year. Choosing to buy food with the FAIRTRADE Mark really does make a huge difference to thousands of farmers, workers and their families. From 29 February until 13 March 2016 is Fairtrade Fortnight, during which ordinary people like you and me are encouraged to inspire a multitude of Fairtrade breakfasts in our communities – and wake others up to the challenges facing farmers and workers. There are three simple steps to get involved: l Organise your own Big Fairtrade Breakfast l Inspire others to host a breakfast (for example,
in a school, workplace, town hall or individuals at home) l Register your breakfast on the Big Fairtrade
Breakfast totaliser to make sure it gets counted. You can find everything you need at fairtrade.org. uk/breakfast. No one person can do everything to tackle the injustices that exist in the world, but harnessing the power of a Fairtrade breakfast is something we can all do. So, sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers!

Odd veg?
In UK alone, 24 million slices of bread are thrown away every single day along with 5.9 million glasses of milk and 5.8 million potatoes. According to Love Food, Hate Waste, we throw away seven million tonnes of food and drink each year from our homes and the majority of that food is perfectly edible. The average family bins the equivalent of a meal a day and wastes around £60 per month on food that never makes it to the plate. However it’s not all doom and gloom. With a few simple changes, you can drastically cut the amount of food that ends up in the bin. By planning your meals ahead, creating a shopping list for the supermarket and ending reliance upon sell by dates that tasty, edible food can find its way to your stomach rather than the rubbish. The Love Food Hate Waste website is full of useful information including meal guides and portion planners.
22
Food is lost at many different stages throughout the supply chain in production, handling and storage, packaging, transporting the goods, retail and finally with the consumer. Annually, 18 million tonnes of food end up in landfill from the UK and figures from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimate that globally, one third of food produced for our consumption never gets eaten; that’s 1.3 billion tonnes per year. Food waste occurs for numerous reasons which include overproduction to ensure farmer’s contracts, faulty handling of goods and not meeting required aesthetic guidelines. That’s right, curvy cucumbers and bumpy tomatoes get binned before they reach the shelves not because of their quality or taste, but because of the way that they look.

Feature The environmental and social impact of food waste is huge. We waste edible food when people throughout the world live in food poverty and demand for food is continuing to rise. This is turn pushes up the price of staple food crops. Environmentally, resources are used at all stages of the supply chain and greenhouse gas emissions from food production are going up. Emissions from the agricultural sector currently account for about 14% of all greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans. Cutting food waste would be equivalent to taking one in every four cars off the road in the UK. Since 2007, household food waste has been cut by 21% saving consumers £13 billion over the five year period. This is positive but there is still a long way to go and it’s where initiatives such as the ugly fruit and veg campaign come in. The Beautiful on the Inside campaign announced by Jamie Oliver, is an initiative being trialed in five Asda supermarkets across the UK, which started in January 2015. The stores sell ‘wonky’ fruits and vegetables at a 30% discount.
A similar initiative was carried out by French supermarket chain Intermarché who ran a highly successful campaign with wonderful ads to match. Their ‘failed lemon’, ‘ugly carrot’ and ‘ridiculous potato’ formed part of the range named the ‘Inglorious’ fruits and vegetables which were sold at a 30% discount. Traffic to the participating supermarkets increased by 24% and the wonky produce sold out within two days. There’s more positive news… In a poll conducted for Jamie Oliver’s campaign, 65% of consumers stated that they would buy misshapen fruits and vegetables, especially if they were sold at a discount. Lifting the aesthetic restrictions on our fruits and vegetables could cut food waste dramatically. The soil association currently estimates that between 20 and 40% of fresh produce never makes it to the shelves because of how it looks. After all, a carrot is a carrot and when it’s chopped/ grated/mashed/blended, you’ll never know that it had an extra bump.
Intermarché’s highly successful ‘inglorious fruit and veg’ campaign Claire Hopkins @ lovemrsh. .... @ Delishkitchenrugby winner of Pride of Rugby Hospitality Business of the Year 2013 and 2014. Finalists 2015 Business Person of the Year , Business of the Year & Hospitalty business of the year

Global Belly Laugh Day Global Belly Laugh Day takes place on 24th January. Its aim is to celebrate the gift of laughter.
Whilst there are many different languages spoken throughout the world, laughter can be said to be a universal language. It also has no boundaries: it happens somewhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and across all continents. The day was created by Laughter-Yoga Teacher Elaine Helle in 2005. She says it’s a chance to celebrate with the people in your life past and present, who laugh with you and help you laugh and smile... and also to remember the strange, funny, ‘now I can laugh at it’ moments. One of the main features of the day is the Belly Laugh, Bounce Around The World. All are encouraged to smile, throw their arms in the air and laugh out loud at 1:24pm local time so as to literally send laughter around the world. Laughing is of course mostly about having fun, but there are health benefits too. Research shows that a good laugh can: lower blood pressure, boost our immune system, reduce some stress hormones, increase vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood, provide a work out for the diaphragm, abdomen, respiratory system, legs, face and back and increase alertness, creativity, memory, learning and our positive emotions. Even so-called fake laughter can bring these health benefits and
26
this is the principle on which laughter yoga relies. Plus of course many of us find that laughter is infectious and laughter yoga usually takes place in groups to make the most of this. The Global Belly Laugh Day symbol consists of a smiling sun with 7 rays and 1 and 24 dimples. There is also an associated laughing oath which was written by Diana Loomans and Karen Kolberg, it reads: I do solemnly swear from this day forward To grease my giggling gears each day And to wear a grin on my face for no reason at all! I promise to tap my funny bone often, With children, family, friends, colleagues and clients, And to laugh at least fifteen times per day. I believe that frequent belly laughter Cures terminal tightness, cerebral stiffness, And hardening of the attitudes, And that HA HA often leads to AHA! Therefore, I vow, from this day forth, To brighten the day of everyone I meet, And to laugh long and prosper. So on Global Belly Laugh Day and every space day ‘have a laugh.’ If you are struggling to find inspiration, why not look through some old photos, watch a funny film or wear some crazy clothes laugh and the world laughs with you, and its free!

Tea for health? Tea is the most consumed drink in the world, after water, but offers many more benefits than just being a refreshing beverage. Studies have linked regular tea drinking – both black and green teas – with benefits for heart health, cancer prevention, oral health and cognitive function. The major active substances in tea are believed to be flavonoids – plant compounds from the polyphenol family – which are also found in different forms in fruits, vegetables, cocoa and red wine. Two other substances – caffeine and L-theanine (an amino acid)– are thought to contribute to tea’s effects on mental performance and mood.
Tea and hydration
It is a common belief that caffeinated drinks, such as tea, may adversely affect body hydration levels. Consumers are sometimes given advice in magazines to limit consumption of caffeinated drinks, or drink water alongside them. A randomised cross-over trial in adults has investigated whether or not this claim is true in relation to tea drinking and the results suggest that drinking up to 6 mugs of tea daily has similar hydrating properties to drinking plain water.
Brew your cuppa for at least 2-3 minutes to maximise the health-giving properties of the flavonoids. Tea only contains 40-50mg of caffeine per serving – less than coffee but enough to provide benefits for mental function.
Green or black tea?
Black and green tea offer similar health benefits Green tea often hits the headlines for its benefits but not everyone knows that all teas are in fact derived from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Of the tea produced worldwide, 69% is black, 29% green and 2% oolong , so black tea is far more popular and widely available. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their common origin, black and green teas offer similar health benefi ts. While the types of flavonoids found in green and black tea may differ – green is higher in catechins while black contains theaflavins and thearubigins – the overall flavonoid content is fairly similar. Evidence from human studies, which have compared green and black teas, suggests that both forms have the potential to reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and possibly cancer. Growing research links tea drinking with a reduced risk of stroke and diabetes, as well as the known heart health benefits

Burn’s Night 25th January 2016
Burns Night celebrations were originally started in Ayrshire at the end of the 18th century. The first Burns club, known as The Mother Club, was founded in Greenock in 1801 by merchants born in Ayrshire, believed to be some of Burns’s closest friends. They held the first Burns supper on what they thought was his birthday on 29 January 1802, but in 1803 discovered from the Ayr parish records that the correct date was 25 January 1759, and since then suppers have been held on 25 January,
Burns’ birthday.
Burns suppers were originally celebrated in Scotland but are now held across the world each year on or around the poets birthday. A traditional Burns supper will include a hearty feast with haggis, whisky, singing, dancing and a lot of laughter and fun commemorating Burns life and works with songs, recitals and tributes. The Selkirk Grace is often said before proceedings start when everyone is called to the table before eating and the haggis is piped in. The Selkirk Grace Some hae meat and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it; But we hae meat, and we can eat, Sae let the Lord be thankit. The last line is often varied to read- And sae the Lord be thankit Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach though now often in an artificial casing instead. Although its description doesn’t sound very appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour. The name “hagws” or “hagese” was first used in England c. 1430, but the dish came to be considered traditionally Scottish, as a result of Scots poet Robert Burns’ poem Address to a Haggis of 1787. Haggis is traditionally served with “neeps and tatties”, boiled and mashed separately, and a wee dram.
42
Haggis, neeps and tatties form a timeless combination – but haggis works in other food cultures, too. 1 TEX MAC NACHOS: Heat haggis in microwave. Dollop generous spoonfuls of guacamole and salsa over bowl of tortilla chips. Add jalapenos. Once haggis is piping hot, dot spoonfuls on top of the nachos, adding a few spoonfuls of sour cream and roughly chopped coriander to finish. 2 HAGGIS TOSTADAS: Heat some haggis in the microwave. Heat some sunflower oil in a large frying pan. When fairly hot, add one flour tortilla and cook until a light golden colour on one side (less than 1 min). Add a generous sprinkling of haggis, salsa, sour cream, grated cheese and coarsely chopped coriander. Top with another flour wrap and heat until contents start to melt. Eat immediately.

2015/16 Evergreen wins Independant Café of the Year Evergreen Art Café wins Independent Café of the Year at the Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards and the prestigious Eat Out Eat Well Gold Award. After much anticipation and a great deal of excitement, Evergreen Art Café in Daventry was presented with the winner’s trophy for the Independent Café of the Year 2015/16 at the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards. The results were announced at a glittering Awards Dinner staged at the Royal & Derngate in Northampton and watched by the evening’s special guest, former Celebrity Masterchef finalist, journalist and comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli. The competition, devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP), is now in its seventh year and is again aimed at celebrating all that is great about local food and drink, recognising excellence within the county’s dining venues and rewarding those who work so hard within the culinary sector. For full details, visit www.northamptonshirefoodanddrink. co.uk where you can also watch Evergreen compete in the Bake Off 2015 competition with the other café finalists and that ultimately led to them being crowned the winners on the night! Simon Williams, owner of Evergreen Art Café says: “Huge thanks to all the lovely customers who nominated us and of course we couldn’t have won this without our wonderful staff who work so hard everyday in the café to deliver great coffee, delicious food and fantastic customer service - this award is for you all!” And just to add to their delight, Evergreen Art Café is also the only café in Daventry to have been awarded the Eat Out Eat Well Gold Award.
44
Eat Out Eat Well, a new scheme launched in Northamptonshire, rewards food establishments who make it easier for their customers to make healthy choices when eating out, There are three levels of the award scheme – bronze, silver and gold – based on a scoring system that takes into account the type of food on offer, how it is prepared, and how it is promoted to customers. Evergreen Art Café in Daventry has just won the prestigious Gold Award and is currently the only café in Daventry to hold the award. Accredited by nutrition experts, Eat Out Eat Well encourages food businesses to offer healthier options on their menus. It also aims to show how healthier cooking practices, such as grilling instead of frying, and the use of lower-fat ingredients where possible, can make a big difference. Initially developed by Surrey County Council, Eat Out Eat Well has now been rolled out across Northamptonshire and Simon Williams from Evergreen Art Café says: “We’re chuffed that our efforts to provide a balanced, healthy (and tasty) menu to our café customers has been recognised in this way and very, proud to be only café in Daventry to hold this award!” Evergreen Art Café is located on Sheaf Street in Daventry. In addition to being an award-winning gallery, it is also an art gallery with art three floors of art on display by some of the UK’s leading contemporary artists. Find out more at www.evergreenartcafe.co.uk or visit them to enjoy the fine art and great coffee, cakes, lunch and lots more!

Cloudy2Clear – A Simple Way To Save Money Cloudy2Clear Windows, the Northampton based window repair company, are revolutionising how homeowners view double glazing in our area. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as customers take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore is more than happy to explain the process. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. I find people are amazed at just
how simple the process is and the speed with which we can replace the glass. This isn’t like when you have new frames put in with people levering out the old ones with loads of mess. We can pop the old glass out and deliver, effectively, a brand new window within a matter of minutes. At the end of the day most frames, even timber ones, will last forever. It’s very rare we come across a window that needs a full replacement and that means the customer gets, effectively, a new window at a fraction of the cost.’
www.cloudy2clear.co.uk. For example, he recently completed an installation at Mr Miners house in Northampton. Here’s what he had to say. ‘I have to say that I thought the service Cloudy2Clear offer compared to having completely new windows absolutely incredible value. The service was reliable, simple and without complication.
The windows look absolutely brilliant and installation was incredibly quick. Thank you!’ High praise indeed! So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be more than happy to help!
Trevor is rightly proud too of comments he receives back from satisfied customers, a selection of which he has put on his website
