You’re never too old… I grew up in Norwich in a house that was always full of music. We woke up in the morning to the radio and the sound of my dad singing along...’ Love grows up my Rosemary’s nose!’ (Yes, he had a warped sense of humour and I’m sorry if you never hear that song the same again!). On the weekend he would play records all day... Tijuana Brass, The Spinners, Guy Mitchell, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller. I still know all the lyrics to King of the Road. At school, I discovered that I loved to dance. PE lessons once a week were Country Dancing. Oh how I adored it and I was pretty good at it, unlike most other forms of Games. As soon as I was old enough, my best friend and I went, every Saturday night to the Samson, a nightclub in a gorgeous Tudor building in the centre of Norwich. We danced until our feet ached to great classics such as Jive Bunny and Adam and the Ants...ah, the good old days (wait until I have to explain those to my grandchildren!) Skip forward a couple of decades and in 2000 I was a mother of 3 living in Northamptonshire. On a night out with the girls at Chicago’s....music, dancing and food - 3 of my favourite things...one of my friends was raving about a new dance class she had started to go to and offered to take me along. It was on a Monday night at the Leisure Centre in Daventry and it was called Ceroc. I remember not knowing what to expect and certainly not expecting a full on night out complete with DJ and disco lights. The teacher was a very bubbly young lady called Emma and I was in awe of her. She danced brilliantly and made it look so easy. I was looked after by the Taxidancers, there to help beginners, and had the most amazing dance to Suzi Quattro’s Devilgate Drive. I was hooked. I went home on an enormous high and couldn’t wait for the next week. Now, 16 years later, I still love it. I now work for the Ceroc franchise and one of my very best friends is Emma, my

4

dance teacher (I’m still in awe!). Dancing keeps me fit and (sort of ) trim and I have made some amazing friends through it. Wherever I go to dance, all over the country, there are people that I know. Dancing changes lives – fact. Through the years I have seen many relationships form – and break up – but the love of dancing continues. In my work capacity, I see people start to dance for many reasons. Some through boredom, some to get fit and some to meet new people and jump start a social life. Whatever the reason, I cannot count the number of times I have been told how dancing has changed them. How much they look forward to their <insert day here> evening dancing. It’s not just Ceroc either. Emma runs dance classes for Ballroom and Latin which I have also dabbled in! The same happens there. Although it is much more common to take a partner to these type of classes, often this is not possible. The way the classes are taught means that this is not a problem. Everyone dances with everyone else and, in this way, friendships are formed. Dance people are happy people and easy to get along with. There is always space at a dance class for beginners. In fact, they are welcomed with open arms as they are seen as future dance partners to get to know. Monthly social dance events (without a class) bring everyone together allowing the chance to get to know people and their stories and I have heard many. Marriage break ups, bereavements, wanting to lose weight and hating the gym. I have even heard of dancing being recommended by a GP. Dancing is for all – young, old, single, married, dancers or two left feet. If you are tempted to give it a go – please do. You will not regret it.

Look good, feel good with new laser technology Sarah Dougherty the clinic director of Anew Aesthetics has been in the beauty industry for over thirty years and ten of those have been at Anew Aesthetics Skincare and Beauty Salon. Sarah and her team continually strive to bring into the salon the very latest beauty treatments and technology available to obtain the very best results for their client’s needs. With this in mind Sarah has recently invested in a new laser. The Superibum laser treats a wide range of conditions the most common being hair removal. The new deeper ND Yag pulse offers a more effective delivery of energy to the hair follicle and creates little or no heat to the surface of the skin rendering the treatment effectively pain free. The chiller machine blows cold air onto the area being treated to ensure that no discomfort is felt. Treatment sessions are recommended every 3-4 weeks on the face and every 4-5 weeks on the body. It is not possible to give a precise number of treatments required but a general guide is 10-12 treatments depending on the client’s skin and hair colouring. The Nd Yag laser also offers a non-invasive solution for the removal of unsightly red veins on the face and legs (telangietasias).

or wish to remove them completely. The Q-switch laser is the only effective treatment for the removal of unwanted tattoos. During treatment the tattoo ink absorbs the photons of light causing the ink structure to shatter, the body’s own immune system then removes the shattered pigment. Hyper-pigmentation is treated in much the same way to remove unsightly dark staining to from the skin. Fungal nail infections ( Onychomicosis )are prevalent at the moment with millions of people suffering from the contagious condition, this is easily treated in the clinic with the laser and the condition can be cleared in as little as two session. The clinic regularly treats minor skin complaints such as skin tags and seborrheic keratosis these are usually treated one session. All clients are offered a complimentary consultation to assess their requirements and to discuss the treatment plan. Please call 01788 817070 to make an appointment. ANEW Aesthetics, 3a Southam Road, Dunchurch, Rugby Warwickshire CV22 6NL clinic@anewaesthetics.co.uk

The blood within the vessels absorbs the energy emitted from the laser, this heat destroys the wall of the vein causing it to collapse and the vessel is then reabsorbed naturally by the body. At the time of the treatment some veins will disappear immediately and others will take a few weeks to fade. Tattoo removal has become ever increasing in popularity as client change their mind over the design of the tattoo

Achieving your health goals in 2017 Do you want to take control of your health and fitness in 2017? It’s not always easy but Tina Sheridan has 20 years’ experience of helping everyone from beginners to elite athletes achieve their goals.

Pilates for everybody Pilates uses a range of specialised and precise routines, designed to help the body regain its natural capabilities, using mainly floorwork mat exercises. It is an established way of regaining the flexibility, mobility and strength lost after an operation or injury and Tina works closely with GP’s and physiotherapists. “It’s also body maintenance from the inside outwards,” explains Tina. “We all spend so much time sitting that that we need to take care of ourselves, particularly our backs.” Tina has recently invested in a Reformer machine to increase the intensity of the workout for one to one clients who have mastered the basics and want to increase their challenge. “Feedback so far has been very positive,” says Tina.

Come and try Nordic Walking

Tina’s specialisms include hyper mobility and chair Pilates, ideal for older, less mobile clients. She also runs classes which focus on strengthening the very important pelvic floor muscles which can be weakened by childbirth, chronic coughing or old age. Fit your lifestyle Tina’s studio is at Whilton Mill and she runs classes at Ravensthorpe, Long Buckby and Daventry. There are times to suit everyone from early morning men only groups to evening one to one appointments or Saturday morning classes. So what’s stopping you? 2017 could be your healthiest year ever! Visit www.tinapilates.co.uk or call Tina on 07810 380 636 – she is always happy to have a chat.

Bowen Therapy for carers Being a carer for a family member can be emotionally and physically overwhelming. Amongst other things it can change your relationship with that person. There can be the added worry of financial strain. It can be hard to remain patient if you aren’t getting a good night’s sleep. If the person you are caring for has dementia you may not be able to have the same conversations that you used to have, and the person can seem to have fundamentally changed from the one you used to know. Stress is inevitable in these situations, and it is surprising just how many physical symptoms can be caused by stress; symptoms such as headaches, lower back pain, lacking in energy, difficulty breathing, feeling dizzy or faint, pains in the chest, a heavy feeling in your arms or legs. (These symptoms can also point to other issues so if you are concerned you should get checked out by your GP.) An amazing statistic is that two thirds of carers have back pain. Of course, this can mean that carers are doing physically more demanding work such as having to lift and bend to help their family member get dressed, washed and so on, but stress actually increases your risk of developing back pain. Looking after yourself is a priority, because you can’t care for other people if you aren’t fit and well yourself. At my clinics in Daventry, Northampton and Milton Keynes, I regularly see people who are struggling with back pain, stress and tension, and a good proportion of them are carers. I use a super soft tissue remedial therapy called Bowen Therapy. A 2007 study showed that 89% of treatments given resulted in either a complete or partial recovery of back pain. Bowen Therapy helps to reduce pain and improve the range of movement through the body. In addition to this Bowen helps to relieve symptoms of stress and can help with depression. It is a relaxing and gentle treatment to receive with no hard tissue manipulation. I also offer Aromatherapy massage and Indian Head massage. If you would like to try a Bowen session, why not enter this month’s competition? Alternatively you can select an Aromotherapy or Indian Head massage. The treatment will be 45 minutes. Try something new in 2017 As new year approaches many of us consider improving our fitness and developing a healthier lifestyle. Rather than going to the gym why not consider a different, more social activity that you can learn and do whatever your age?

Skiing and snowboarding Skiing and snowboarding are fun, get you moving and are great alternatives to traditional sports. There are hundreds of indoor snow centres and dry ski slopes across the country, so if you fancy giving either skiing or snowboarding a go, there should be lots of options not far from home. Through Snowsport England’s Go Ski Go Board programme, lots of slopes offer low-cost taster sessions or longer courses if you have already caught the bug. Find out more at www.goskigoboard.org.uk

It’s official - golf is good for you Golf can help you live longer, cut the risk of many chronic diseases and improve your self-esteem, according to a new research project. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh reviewed 5000 papers to assess the health and well-being benefits of the game. Key benefits include a five-year increase in life expectancy and improved quality of life, as well as physical and mental health benefits. Golf is expected to decrease the risk of more than 40 major chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, colon and breast cancer. Current research shows that golf has positive impacts on cholesterol, body composition, metabolism, and longevity. Get into golf offers many ways to learn and to improve including short taster sessions, usually an hour. Find out more at www.getintogolf.org

Learn to nordic walk Nordic walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking, it makes something we learn to do as babies …. twice as effective! Nordic walking uses poles to add two major benefits to walking 1. The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs 2. The poles help to propel the walker along – this means he/she works harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier! For more information www.nordicwalking.co.uk and to find a local instructor. Finally if you’re already involved in a sport then why not

Get into coaching Coaching is a great way to express your passion for sport and physical activity. Help people of all ages in your community benefit from an active lifestyle. Coaching is a great way to express your passion for a sport and be actively involved instead of standing on the sidelines. It is not only exciting and self satisfying but you can have a positive influence on people’s lifelong involvement in sport. It will also help you to keep you active both mentally and physically. There are many ways in which to get involved, such as helping your local club, getting involved in your children’s sporting activities or even helping to support the next elite sports star! Feeling the cold? Government research estimates that about 35% of all heat loss from UK homes takes place through external walls! Solid walls are one of the main causes behind this. Typically found in older properties, they do not retain heat and are a major factor in heat loss. Weatherseal Facades are a family-run business based in Rugby, specialising in external wall insulation (EWI) render and cladding systems, to domestic and commercial properties. External wall insulation brings a range of fantastic benefits for your property:

“Having researched options to rectify old and damaged exterior walls, we came across external wall insulation.

Reduced heat loss and CO2 emissions

“From the beginning it was superbly project managed with every aspect of the works delivered according to plan.

Savings on energy bills Improved weatherproofing & protection Reduced condensation on internal walls & prevention of damp Improved appearance & increased market value

“The result is fabulous, not only does it improve the aesthetics of the exterior but has already had a positive impact on damp issues created through cracked render, and we are looking forward to reduced fuel bills.” Mrs Armitage, Willoughby

Broccoli & Cauliflower Soup The flavours of this soup are comforting without overpowering as it tastes more like a curried cauliflower soup as the cumin and curry powder adds that soft heat that gives you a warm hug from the bowl. Preparation Time: 40 minutes | Serves: One Actions

Ingredients 50g onion finely chopped 125g celery, finely chopped 125g cabbage red or white, shredded 125g broccoli, chopped up 125g cauliflower, chopped up 1 tsp. cumin powder or seeds 2 cloves garlic or 2 tsp. of paste 1 tsp. curry or 5 spice (personal taste) 1 tsp. anchovy paste (optional) 1 tbsp. vegetable stock or 1 stock cubes with 500ml hot water 1 tbsp. of soy or tamari sauce pinch sea salt & black pepper Bunch of fresh herbs, basil, parsley - any favorites

Using large saucepan that has a lid, place on hob medium heat, stream fry onions, garlic & celery in a little stock water, keep stirring for 20 seconds so as not to burn, add more stock water if required Add in cumin and curry powders, soy sauce, and anchovy paste, keep stirring Stir in shredded cabbage and keep stirring for a few moments to coat the cabbage with the spices, then pour in the rest of the stock, bring to the boil then reduce to simmer for further 5 minutes and season to taste Add cauliflower & broccoli, then place the lid and simmer for further 20 mins You can either leave as it is, or blend down with hand blender if you prefer a smooth texture Serving suggestion Serve into big soup bowl sprinkle herbs or spinach leaves on top, add chilli flakes for heat and enjoy.

Feature

Can you “detox” sugar? Sugar is on the tip of everyone’s tongue with heated arguments around regulating sugar, health warnings and taxes. But the big question is ‘will cutting sugar out of your diet really change your health?’ There’s no doubt that sugar is big business; today’s consumption of added-sugars of 478.8g for men and 344.4g per week for women, works out as an average of 16 to 11.7 to teaspoons per day respectively. The World Health Organization and Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition in England advise: • Less than 9 teaspoons per day for men • Less than 6 teaspoons per day for women • Less than 3-6 teaspoons per day for children The sugar in our diets is almost exclusively from added-sugars hidden in foods, mostly sugar-sweetened beverages (e.g. soft drinks, milk drinks, energy drinks), and packaged and processed foods (especially cereals and baked goods). The prevalence of sugar in foods may be shocking, but food manufacturers use sugars with many different names, eg, corn syrup, maltodextrin, erythritol, brown rice syrup, agave nectar or syrup. While a bit of honey in your tea may be harmless, regular consumption of foods laced with added sugars is a different matter. Large-scale studies of sugar-sweetened beverages have shown strong links heart disease, obesity, and type-2 diabetes. In most cases increases in risk are similar in magnitude to smoking or not exercising.

36

Perhaps surprisingly, other diseases now strongly associated with sugar are gout, arthritis, autoimmune disease, fatty liver disease, depression, and dementia. Despite the popularity of sugar detox or reduction diets, only recently has the science shed light on the health effects of quitting sugar. And it appears that detoxing sugar could indeed transform your health. Sugar is now viewed as the new tobacco, with comparable health implications and controversy surrounding its regulation. The evidence clearly shows that too much is toxic, but many find it hard to quit. The problem is that modern, processed foods are sugarcoated, literally and figuratively. The taste buds become accustomed to the sweetness, and so a short sharp sugar detox can be the most effective way to rehab from this sweet addiction. Fortunately, there are natural supplements that can help rebalance blood sugars and make the ‘cold turkey’ period easier. Check out the new 7 Day Sugar Detox Kit from Viridian Nutrition, available locally at Sheaf Street Health Store, 20 Sheaf Street, Daventry NN11 4AB.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Northampton area and manager

Trevor Skidmore agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Bright Green Renewables

Are your central heating and hot water costs too high? We have the solution… The cost of heating homes using traditional fossil fuel systems like gas, oil or LPG is increasing year-on-year. These systems also contribute to global climate change due to the high levels of carbon dioxide they produce. As part of their climate change obligations the UK Government has set a target to reduce total carbon dioxide emissions in the UK by 34% by 2020 (compared to 1990). Domestic heating systems have been identified as a large contributor to these harmful emissions. To help achieve these ambitious carbon reduction targets the UK Government is heavily supporting “Renewable Energy” heating systems. As well as resulting in lower running costs for the consumer, the Government is also rewarding people who install these Renewable Energy systems with generous 7-year, index-linked grants. These grants are paid directly to the homeowner and are designed to repay the installation costs of these highly efficient heating systems.

Too good to be true? Absolutely not… This is what some of our customers have to say:

“We are amazed at the savings already made on our heating bills, plus the grant payments..!” Nikki – Braunston “In spite of a hard frost this morning my home feels really cosy” Mrs Phillips – Helmdon “The heat pump is working perfectly and far more efficiently than the previous system” Mr Parkhurst – Moreton Paddox

Bright Green Renewables are a Government approved installer of these innovative Heat Pump systems. Heat Pumps extract solar energy from the air (Air Source) or ground (Ground Source) and use this energy to provide hot water for either conventional radiators or underfloor heating systems. They are also an extremely efficient way to produce domestic hot water for baths and showers etc. Modern heat pumps are highly efficient, computer controlled devices and use exactly the same operating principles as a domestic fridge to “pump” heat from the outside of a house to the inside. This thermal energy is used to heat water, which is then pumped around a conventional radiator circuit. A standard room thermostat can be used to control room temperatures and preferred heating schedules. Bright Green Renewables offer a no-obligation service to assess whether your home is suitable for a heat pump system. We can then design a suitable system to provide 100% of the central heating and domestic hot water requirements, along with the associated installation costs. We can also calculate the value of the Government grants via the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme to help you to work out the return-on-investment for these state-of-the-art heating systems. Bright Green Renewables are proud to be accredited as a Which? Trusted Trader and a member of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code. We were also awarded “East of England Heating Installer of the Year 2016”.

What the heck is hygge? You’d have had to be pretty well snuggled under a mountain of blankets not to have heard about hygge this winter. Pronounced ‘hue-gah’, it’s all about creating a sense of cosiness, of coming together with friends and family, of revelling in simple pleasures. Think warm, fluffy towels, roaring fires and flickering candles. Think good, honest, home-cooked food, shared with friends. Hygge isn’t about buying ‘stuff’, whatever the retailers want us to think. You don’t need to spend money to create a sense of hygge. Wrapping up in a snuggly jumper and going for a walk can be hygge, as can catching up with a friend over coffee. It’s about a feeling, not possessions. It’s about being kind to yourself, and to others. You could…

48

• Curl up in PJs and a snuggly blanket, drink hot chocolate and read a book. • Light that scented candle you’ve been saving. • Stop trying to multi-task; turn off your phone and focus on the moment. • Bake some gooey chocolate chip cookies. • Invite a neighbour over for a cuppa. • Send a loved one a letter. • Soak in a bath with a few drops of aromatherapy oils. • Explore the great outdoors with your family. • Turn off your phone. While fashions come and go, hygge is one trend that’s very much worth indulging in. Enjoy.

Decluttering – the KonMari way Marie Kondo is a Japanese ‘organising consultant’ whose method for decluttering is taking the globe by storm. Called KonMari, the method is actually pretty straightforward. If something you own doesn’t ‘spark joy’, get rid of it. Simple right? KonMari isn’t for everyone, and Kondo certainly has a few somewhat bizarre suggestions. (Seriously, who has the time to unpack every item from their handbag, every evening?) But most of her advice is practical, easy to follow and actually makes a lot of sense. She also dips into the psychology of why we hold on to things, and why we should let them go. Kondo recommends collecting every item in a particular category and going through them in one go. So, for instance, you’d lay every item of clothing you own on the bed or floor, pick up each one and if it doesn’t ‘spark joy’ add it the charity pile. With this approach, you get the shock of realising just how much stuff you actually own, and are more likely to discard items than if you just flick through them when they’re in a drawer. She does, of course, make some concessions for items you really need but that don’t particularly spark joy. The main idea is that you should stop hoarding stuff that you might use one day, clothes that you only ever wear when the washing pile

54

is teetering over, and items you feel guilty about getting rid of. Kondo also has some good advice when it comes to what to do with the things you keep. She advises against buying expensive storage solutions, and using shoe boxes to keep things tidy instead. She also recommends storing things vertically, e.g. folding clothes so that they can be stacked on end, meaning you can see them, rather than having them buried under other items. I’ve found this useful, to an extent. It does mean I can find a black t-shirt easily, but that I might have to unfold several black t-shirts to find the one that has the motif I want. Kondo lives alone, and it does feel sometimes that her method is mainly aimed at other single adults. She recommends leading by example, the idea being that if you get rid of clutter, your family will follow you. That has not yet happened in my house I have to say. Nevertheless, I have got rid of several bin bags and boxes full of ‘stuff’ since reading her book and have felt surprisingly relieved about doing it. If you fancy trying the KonMari method for yourself, her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, can be ordered from most libraries and book stores.

Chinese New Year 2017 year of the rooster Chinese new year falls on Saturday 28th January. In China, many people will take a whole week off from work to mark the celebration. It is known as the spring festival. On New Year’s Eve, Reunion Dinner is eaten. Many Chinese people believe this is the most important meal of the year. It is usually shared by several generations and consists of fish, dumplings, spring rolls, glutinous rice cakes and sweet rice balls. To mark New Year, red lanterns are hung in the street, red couplets are pasted on doors and images of prosperity displayed. Fireworks are lit and it’s believed that the person who launches the first firework of the New Year will have good luck. Lion and dragon dances take place and these are intended to scare away evil and attract health, wealth, and wisdom. Many new year activities have links with Chinese legends. New year is called Guo Nian which means ‘celebrate a new year’ or ‘overcome Nian’. Nian was an ancient sea living monster who came onto land on New Year’s Eve to eat people and livestock. One year, an old man with white hair and a ruddy complexion managed to scare away the monster by pasting red papers on to doors, burning bamboo which made a loud cracking sound, lighting candles in the houses and wearing red clothes.

58

Another monster called Sui was said to terrify children whilst they slept. Parents would stay up all night watching and lighting candles to try and keep their children safe. One official’s family gave their child eight gold coins to play with. The child wrapped the coins in red paper and then played at unwrapping them and wrapping them back up until he got so tired he fell asleep. The parents put the coins under the child’s pillow and legend has it that when Sui came and tried to touch the child, the eight coins omitted such a strong light that it scared the demon away. This is the basis for why elders and those who are married give children and young unmarried people red envelopes with coins in them at New Year. The red envelope is called Yasui Qian which means suppressing Sui money and the purpose is to scare away the monster and bring good luck. According to Chinese astrology, each year is associated with an animal symbol. There is a 12-year cycle and 2017 is the year of the rooster. The China highlights website says that those born in the year of the rooster are observant, hardworking, confident and courageous. They are best matched with those born in the Year of the ox or snake.

Your garden

Feather their nest Did you know that there is a National Nest Box Week? This year it takes place from 14th-21st February. The event is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology. The idea started in 1997 following fears about birds losing their natural nest sites because of lots of trees being cut down, old buildings disappearing, gardens being ‘tidied’ and old houses being repaired. The Trust wants us to put up nest boxes so that we can protect the wildlife we have, and encourage even more birds to come into our gardens. It is estimated that there are now over 5 million nest boxes in the uk designed to help everything from robins to owls. Different types of nesting box attract different birds. So in a box with small holes, you might get blue tit’s, nuthatches, redstarts or house sparrows. Boxes with larger holes may encourage starlings, spotted woodpeckers and perhaps even little owls; and in very big boxes you might see kestrels, jackdaws, stock doves and tawny owls. There are also open fronted boxes which appeal to robins, spotted flycatcher and pied wagtails. Imagine how lovely it would be to watch the birds going in and out of your boxes and hopefully some young ones hatching there. If you are careful and quiet, you can even peek inside the box from time to time when the eggs are incubating, as most birds will sit tight. If you want to count the eggs, observe in the early morning and wait until the female bird flies off for a quick meal. You can choose to buy some nest boxes from your local pet store or garden centre, or make some. Instructions for building boxes are available on many internet sites including http://www.Bto.Org/ the british trust for ornithology site.

Here are some handy hints for siting your nest boxes: • Do not put nest boxes of the same type close to each other • Open fronted boxes should be hidden from view • Make sure cats cannot get into the boxes • Consider putting a metal plate around the hole to deter squirrels • Boxes should be sheltered from the weather • Keep the boxes away from bird feeders • Place between 1 and 5 metres high • Use screws that will not rust February is an ideal time to put boxes up, because pairs of small birds prosper towards the end of the month. You are also helping however if you put boxes up at any time of year, although 1 August to the 31 January is the time under Bird Protection Law when nests can be cleaned out, and any dead eggs found destroyed.

January/February gardening tips January

February

It is cold, frosty, windy and wet but there are still jobs to be done. Get warm by digging over any vacant plots in your allotment/vegetable garden and borders, the frost will help break down any clumps of soil that are left.

This month if you look carefully there are very early signs of the spring, snowdrops are everywhere, and the thick tips of daffodil bulbs appear as you clear away leaves.

If the council hasn’t already collected your Christmas tree you can shred it for mulch, do not put into compost bin as the needles will take a while to break down. Keep topping up bird feeders; food is scarce for them over winter. Keep bird baths topped up and break any ice after a frost. If you haven’t done so already, give the greenhouse a good clean, wash the glass with soapy water and have a good sweep up. Re-shape lawn edges with a half-moon edger or a spade, this will give a great head start towards the first mow in the spring. Check any stored tubers of dahlias & begonias for rot or drying out. Prune pear and apple trees. Start to force rhubarb by covering the crowns to prevent light reaching them (you can use an old bucket); this will encourage the plants to make early growth. Use these lovely pale stalks in cooking when they are 20cm - 30cm long. Only force the stems of established rhubarb plants as new plants will not have sufficient energy to produce stems.

As light levels increase and the temperature is slightly higher the garden starts to come to life again. You can start to prune shrubs and climbers like wisteria as well as hardy evergreen hedges, also renovate and tidy overgrown deciduous hedges. Vegetable seed beds can be prepared, and you can even sow some vegetables, but keep them under cover in cloches. Start chitting early potatoes; this means allowing them to start sprouting shoots. Stand them in egg boxes or similar with the eyes facing upwards in a light, frost-free place. Protect blossom on nectarines and peaches with plastic to keep off the rain and help reduce the chance of leaf curl and fungus. Prune winter-flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering and prune conservatory climbers such as bougainvillea. You can divide snowdrops once they have finished flowering and are, ‘in the green’, this means planting when the bulb still has leaves.

Now after all your hard work make a nice hot drink, get in your favourite chair and start planning this year’s vegetable plot and flower borders.
