Peace of mind at Vasstech Auto Services A free car safety check at Vasstech Auto Services was too good an offer to turn down for our colleague Nauris. So he booked his appointment and popped down to see the team just around the corner from Rugby station. Simon welcomed him and explained that the free check includes inspection of steering/suspension components, brake systems, tyres, tyre pressures, fluid and light operation checks.
Everything explained
Nauris settled down in the comfortable waiting area with a cuppa and biscuits to catch up on a few emails courtesy of the free Wi-Fi. In less than an hour Simon invited Nauris back to reception to go through the issues they found and gave him a full report and quote to take away. Nauris commented, “As a new customer I appreciated the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. Everything was explained very thoroughly without rushing or pressuring me and the pricing was very clear. The waiting room was clean and quiet; sadly I didn’t have time to flick though the magazines. It has given me peace of mind that I can rely on my car.”
Caring for car owners
Owners David Ian and Nathalie Dawson set up Vasstech in 2009 to offer main dealer quality servicing and repairs at affordable prices. They specialise in VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat but they can repair, service or MOT any make. However they don’t only look after the car, they believe the owner is just as important too. So they offer courtesy cars or lifts as well as the waiting area whilst your vehicle is with them. If you can’t get down to Woodside Park then Vasstech will collect and deliver your car if you live within ten miles. The team is always happy to explain what has been done and even show you the worn or defective parts that have been replaced. 10% off your first service. People return time and again to Vasstech. Nathalie makes sure these loyal customers are the first to know about special offers with a monthly newsletter. If customers refer a friend they even get £15 off their next bill as a thank you. If it’s your first time at Vasstech you will get 10% off the cost of your service. Just mention The Village Emporium when you call Vasstech on 01788 542555 www.vasstech.co.uk If your car is still under warranty Vasstech will make sure the genuine manufacturer parts are used, so your warranty will not be affected.

Why hire a Personal Trainer... Motivation
Even fitness crazed Personal Trainers (PT’s) struggle for motivation at times, so for those of you who exercise is fairly low on your list of fun things to do may need some extra persuasion. Hiring a personal trainer means having your own cheerleader every step of the way even during those tough sessions!
Efficiency
Modern day living means time is of the essence You don’t want to be aimlessly wandering around the gym thinking up a last minute session. A PT’s knowledge and preparation can mean even on limited time, sessions will be organised and structured allowing you to get the most bang for your buck!
Expertise
Research has shown that variety in programming is one of the leading reasons to hire a PT. The up to date knowledge and education of a fully qualified PT means lots of fresh ideas culminating in fun sessions!
Investment in Health and Wellbeing
Increasing levels of obesity and its negative effects on health is never far from the news, hiring a PT is an obvious and accessible step in taking a hold of a healthy lifestyle. The positive effects of exercise on health are very well documented; lessened likelihood of heart disease, cancer, strokes to name but a few.
Safety
Correct form through an exercise should be of paramount importance to your PT. This in turn means not only getting the most out of your exercise but will ensure correct and safe technique at all times resulting in reduced risk of injury.

Look good, feel good
The science behind the smile Mother Teresa said, “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.” Haven’t we all experienced feeling good because someone smiled at us. Yet science tells us that there is nothing simple about a smile. Imagine an appealing child or a cute kitten and you probably smile. Electrical signals travel from the cortex of your brain to the brainstem (the part that deals with basic body functions such as breathing, heart rate etc.). From there, cranial nerves carry the signal onwards to muscles in your face and you smile. But have you ever noticed that as you smile you actually feel happier? This is due to a positive feedback loop whereby electrical signals are fed back to the brain from the smiling-muscles, reinforcing our feeling of joy. Our brain feels good so tells us to smile: we smile and this tells our brain we feel good. Researchers have found that smiling can be as happiness-inducing as receiving a large unexpected cash bonus! Did you know that there are two sorts of smiles - the fake smile and the genuine smile? In both the fake and the real smile, the zygomaticus major muscle - which controls the corners of your mouth - is activated. But in a genuine smile, the obicularis occuli muscle - which encircles our eye socket - is
also activated. Scientists call the first smile a social smile, and the second a Duchenne smile, named after the scientist who first discovered it. We are surprisingly good at distinguishing between a real and fake smile, and we do this in three ways. First, we unconsciously compare the geometry of a person’s face to a standard smile. Second, we think about context and judge whether a smile is expected. Finally, we automatically mimic the smile, to feel for ourself whether it is fake or real. In fact if we are prevented from mimicking a smile (e.g. by clenching a pencil between our teeth) our ability to differentiate a real smile from a fake smile decreases dramatically! Smiling reduces stress and generates more positive emotions. This is why we often feel happier around children – they smile more. Children smile on average about 400 times a day. Happy adults smile 40-50 times a day, but most of us only smile a maximum of 20 times. Yet smiling more is good for our health. Our brain even keeps track of our smiles - a smile scorecard if you like, so it knows our emotional state. Scientists discovered that people who smile the most are mentally more healthy, and live on average some seven years longer than the rest of us. The good news is, smiling is contagious so spread yours around. As Louis Armstrong sang, “When you’re smilin’, keep on smilin’. The whole world smiles with you…”

why make a will.pdf
1
08/03/2016
22:49
Advertorial
What could possibly go wrong? Writing a Will is essential if people want to prevent difficulties for those left behind when they die. If there’s no Will, there are no executors to administer the estate so the survivor has to apply for a ‘grant of letters of administration’, before the estate can be sorted out and until permission is given, bank accounts and other assets can be frozen. If you don’t have a Will you will be leaving something for your loved ones but it’s not what they will be expecting!
It’s especially important to make a Will if you’re married or in a civil partnership. You may feel that you don’t need a Will and it’s true that your spouse or civil partner would inherit if you died without one. However they wouldn’t necessarily inherit everything you own, especially if you have children. It could mean that the family home has to be sold or, worse, that your spouse has to sue your children to remain there. If you’re living together (but aren’t married) you should definitely draw up a Will as you have little or no rights if your partner were to die. Making a Will is easy. Our friendly, expert advisor will come to your home at a time that suits you and advise you how to protect your assets for your family.
• Extra expense • Unnecessary delays • Family feuds and disagreements • Uncertainty over guardianship of children • Unavoidable financial loss • Additional Stress Not having a Will is not a solution … to avoid leaving your family the wrong type of legacy, make your Will now.
Life is so unpredictable...there is no better time than now to STOP and RECORD your wishes. Call Mark at Assured Wills now for a free, no obligation information pack on 03330 111751 or email: infopack@assured-wills.co.uk

Midsummer’s Day The longest day of the year comes around all too soon. Just three weeks after the arrival of summer on 1st June, the summer solstice (21st June) has passed and we have winter to look forward to again. It’s all to do with which calendar we follow. The astronomical calendar has summer starting in March when we put our clocks forward an hour, whereas the meteorological summer runs from June to August.
Pagan roots
This mixture of calendars is indicative of the mixed-up celebration Midsummer’s Day has become. Like many other ancient traditions, it has its roots in pagan Britain but has been adopted and adapted to fit in with Christian beliefs. Our ancestors - in awe of the power of the sun celebrated the summer solstice by lighting bonfires to protect against evil spirits. They also built stone circles, set in alignment with the rising of the sun, such as those at Stonehenge.
Midsummer’s Eve was a time for fairies (hence Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream) and flowers, which were placed under the pillow to induce important dreams about future loves. Christians celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Midsummer’s Day (24th June). Mystery plays, based on biblical events, are performed at this time of year, particularly in cathedral cities such as Chester, Lincoln and York.

The festival of learning We tend to think of education as something which stops when you reach adulthood, but lifelong learning can open up many new avenues. From learning a new hobby, such as sewing, ballet, or art, to mastering a skill that can boost your career-progression, adult education can enrich your life and open up new opportunities.
“It was like someone had turned a light switch back on, that had been turned off for lots and lots of years.”
The Festival of Learning runs from 1st May to 30th June and aims to inspire people to learn a new skill. There are taster sessions and activities planned across the country, many of which are free. Events include careers advice sessions, college open days and ‘have a go’ sessions, where you could try your hand at everything from computing to cookery.
“I decided that I was going to take myself to university because my children needed someone to give them a better life and I was the only person that could do that.”
The rewards of learning If you haven’t heard of the Festival of Learning before, that may be because it was called Adult Learners’ Week for 24 years. The Festival of Learning sounds rather more enjoyable, and there are certainly some promising events and activities lined up for this year. The Festival of Learning culminates in an awards ceremony in September, where inspiring learners, tutors, education providers and employers are recognised for their achievements. Last year’s winner in the learner category, Adele Tilley, credits education for helping her to leave an abusive relationship, let go of friends and situations that were dragging her down, and carve out a new life for her and her children. Thousands of people took part last year. Comments included:
“I’m not too old!” “I just felt a sense of worth.”
“I have found my passion in life.” “You’re always learning, right up until that last breath goes. That’s what life is.”
More than 3,000 events across UK There were more than 3,000 events held across the UK last year, and this year’s Festival of Learning looks to be even bigger. Most people have something they would like to learn, whether it’s how to manage the family finances better, how to plaster a wall, how to programme a computer, or how to write a screenplay! As Adele Tilley says, “Good luck on your journey and remember – many things that are worth doing are not easy and many things that are easy are not worth doing! Go for it – what do you have to lose? In fact, maybe you have more to gain.”
If you fancy taking up the challenge of trying out a new experience for yourself, check out the Festival of Learning website at: www.festivaloflearning.org.uk

Barking Mad: the
It’s nearly 3 years ago since l saw Shirley’s advert for hosts and since then l have looked after over 80 different alternative dogs, some coming back for their holidays more than once. It’s great to hear that their owners have asked for to kennels them to come back to me. You can get attached to them and some do become favourites. From a The way Barking Mad works is simple really. Owners’ Northamptonshire who love their dogs and do not want to put them into host’s point of view kennels or who, in the past, have relied upon friends or family but for some reason is not an option this time, contact Shirley Rands at Barking Mad. Shirley visits, meets the dog and its owners and matches the dog to a host family. For example she makes sure a Springer Spaniel goes with a host that can cope with a high-energy dog! So for dog owners this brings peace of mind in the knowledge that their dog enjoys dedicated care and attention as it is the only dog in the household, being exercised and fed as if it were in their own home. I have two Black Labradors that have stayed many times in the summer and over New Year two years running. They need help around midnight because they are frightened of fireworks. Henry, a German Pointer, comes often with his cuddly toy, as well as a Springer Spaniel called Pi. He loves his ball and is very good off the lead. All dogs come with their instructions, a CV almost, telling us when to feed, how much, walking routines and whether they can be let off the lead, etc. They also bring with them their beds, food, toys and poo bags, and our home soon becomes their home. It’s surprising how quickly they settle. I love hosting and the house feels so empty when we don’t have a dog to care for, but l know it won’t be long before the next one will be arriving. They enjoy their holiday as much as we enjoy looking after them. So if you love dogs but feel you cannot make the commitment to own one, contact Shirley to become a host family.

The great british street party Royal weddings, Coronations, victory celebrations, and any other national event brings out the party spirit in the Brits. Since early last century we have been eager to dust off the bunting, pull out the trestle tables and no matter the weather, indulge in a traditional street party with tons of British food, drink and a good old knees up.
History of the british street party
The earliest known parties were around the end of the WWI with Peace Teas to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and since that time the community get-together has grown in popularity. Famous events celebrated across the nation have included the Peace Teas, VE Day (Victory in Europe 1945) the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, England’s World Cup Victory 1966, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee 1977, 1981 Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, and most recently the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton are just a few. These may have been national events which sparked a street party, but on a regional level, communities will celebrate local events much more frequently. Originally the traditional street party was at times of austerity so food would have been simple and consisted of whatever was available. In 1953 for the Queen’s coronation food was still rationed after World War II but households were given an extra pound of sugar and 4 oz of margarine for the celebrations.
36
The british street party today
Today the parties may not have the same constraints but they will still be a celebration of traditional British food and drink but you will see the barbecue now putting in an appearance. Food will be more eclectic and celebrate not just traditional British food but the mix of cuisines on these shores. No matter the fare, the getting together of friends, neighbours, workmates ...whatever, is a cause for celebration alone.
Planning a traditional british street party
Dragging out the tables and chairs into the middle of the street and piling on the food isn’t all that is required for setting up a party. In some areas permission from the local council will be required (especially if you are on a bus or a major road route). Health and safety must of course be paramount and can be achieved without spoiling the party. You will need to check on insurance and if there’s alcoholic drink involved, you may well need a license. There’s lots of practical advice advice available from Street Party.org.

Traditional scones…. No street party is complete without them
The secret of good scones is not to handle them too much before baking, and to make the mixture on the wet, sticky side. Either eat scones on the day of making or freeze once they have completely cooled. If time allows, thaw them at room temperature for a couple of hours and then refresh in a moderate oven for about 10 minutes. If you like large scones, this amount of mixture will make 8-10 9cm (3 ½ inch) scones.
Ingredients
Measure the flour and baking powder into a processor. Add the butter and process until a crumble, then add the sugar. Or make by hand by rubbing the butter into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. Beat the eggs together until blended and make up to a generous 300ml (1/2 pint) with the milk, then put about 2 tablespoons of the egg/milk aside in a cup for glazing the scones later. Gradually add the egg/milk mixture to the dry ingredients until you have a soft dough. It is far better that the scone mixture is on the wet side, sticking to your fingers, as the scones will rise better. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and flatten it out with your hand, or use a rolling pin, to a thickness of 1-2 cm (1/2 – ¾ inch). Use a 5 cm (2 inch) fluted cutter to stamp out the dough by pushing the cutter straight down into the dough (as opposed to twisting the cutter) then lift it straight out. This ensures that the scones will rise evenly and keep their shape. Gently push the remaining dough together, knead very lightly then re-roll and cut more scones out as before.
• 450g (1 lb) self-raising flour • 2 rounded teaspoons baking powder • 75g (3 oz) butter, at room temperature • 50g (2 oz) caster sugar • 2 eggs • about 225 ml (8 fl oz) milk
Special equipment 2 baking trays
Instructions
Preparation time: about 15 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes Makes about 20 scones Lightly grease two baking trays. Pre-heat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7.
Arrange the scones on the prepared baking trays and brush the tops with the reserved beaten egg/milk mixture to glaze. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until the scones are well risen and golden. Cool on a wire rack, covered with a clean tea towel to keep them moist. Serve as fresh as possible, cut in half and spread generously with strawberry jam and top with a good spoonful of thick cream.

FA Cup factoids The FA Cup kicked off in 1871, making it the world’s oldest football cup competition. The only club still in existence to win 3 FA Cup finals in a row is Blackburn Rovers (1884 to 1886). They had twenty-four consecutive match wins in that time. In 1888, a match was held on Christmas Day, between Linfield Athletic and Cliftonville. Ashley Cole holds the record for the most wins – he’s won 7 times! 3 wins were with Arsenal and 4 with Chelsea. The current cup itself is a replica of one created in 1911, by Fattorini & Sons in Bradford.
Arsenal also holds the record for the most wins in the FA Women’s Cup (13). Manchester United was the first team to win the cup after only playing top-division teams (1948). In 1985, Kevin Moran became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final.
Jimmy Speirs scored the winning goal for Bradford in 1911. He went on to be awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the First World War.
The FA Women’s Cup began in 1970, although it was then called the Mitre Challenge Trophy.
Arsenal hold the current record for most FA Cup wins (12).
The first FA Women’s Cup winner (in 1972) was Southampton.

Three in one at Brasserie 23
The Kings Head, Spratton Restaurant, Bar and Coffee Shop In June 2013 after an extensive refurbishment Head Chef Daniel Tompkins and his wife Natalie re-opened The Kings Head under the new title “Brasserie 23 “at The Kings Head. It is called Brasserie 23 – as it is number 23 on Brixworth Road
It was an ambitious project with major works required to change it from a village drinking pub to the amazing rustic/modern contemporary look that it has now. Painted throughout with pastel colours and soft lighting it gives an amazing warm atmosphere to enjoy just a drink in the bar with its large comfy sofas or a meal from the menu which combines the best of British tradition with a funky contemporary vibe. Voted restaurant of the year in 2014/2015 and finalists in their first year of trading Brasserie 23 has been recognised as a fantastic venue for an intimate meal for two, family party or even a stop off for walkers and their dogs, who are welcomed in the bar area. Everything on the menu is homemade and sourced from local produce (even the ice-cream!) ,serving up traditional seasonal country dishes with Daniels own signature flourish. Complemented by an extensive range of bespoke real ales, icy cool lagers and a varied and individual wine list, the menu will tantalise your taste buds. Natalie and her friendly staff will talk you through any of the menu choices and go through ingredients and cooking methods to help you choose. Brasserie 23 serves up delicious traditional Sunday roasts with their own signature twist complete with all the trimmings including homemade yorkshires and the richest, tastiest gravy in the county!
Large Sipsmith bottles of barley vodka and gin complete the artisan décor and a really warm welcome is promised to locals and visitors alike. The shabby chic style is also a theme in the coffee shop. Serving delicious homemade cakes and scones accompanied by an eclectic choice of homemade milkshakes, Tea Pig teas and grumpy Mule coffees. The Kings Head function room is available for hire for conferences, client events, training days or board meetings with refreshments provided to tailor individual needs. Projector facilities are available as is wireless internet access. Rooms are also available for yoga and pilates classes! Planning a wedding or a party? Let Natalie and her team help you plan and coordinate your special day in an intimate chic reception venue, to include a bespoke dining experience to suit all requirements through to your evening celebration. Parties are catered for to celebrate in style, with various menu options including buffets, and why not order your celebration cake whether it be birthday, christening or anniversary. Brasserie 23 at The Kings Head, Spratton really is the place to go so drop in or book a table by calling 01604 847351 , email: brasserie23@kingsheadspratton. co.uk or you can reserve a table by filling in the form on their website www.kingsheadspratton.co.uk “We were lucky enough to sample some of the delights from the menu including parsnip, rosemary & lemon veloute, and duck liver parfait with toasted brioche & onion jam. The flavours were amazing, followed by pancetta wrapped pork and fish pie and finished with the most amazing rhubarb crumble with rhubarb jelly and doughnuts with vanilla ice-cream. All throughout our meal the service was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for Natalie and her staff”

Discover Rugby Let us not forget that Rugby is the birthplace of the game with the funny shaped balls, it has a wealth of history and wonderful architecture. Hence the need to shout about its diversity that sets it apart from larger towns and cities, and is just waiting for you to visit. Last autumn, celebrating hosting the World Cup, Rugby hosted some amazing events in the town centre. That may have been and gone, but the town centre still needs your support. How do you choose your shopping destination? Independent businesses with speciality “ Not on the High Street” wares , easy access, cheap parking, great dining experiences, family entertainment are all Rugby has so much more to offer than you may have considered
History
Did you know? The market has been trading in Rugby under Royal Charter since 1235. There is also a farmers market which takes place on the last Thursday of each month. Great local produce from meats to homemade bread, fruit and veg – all sold to you by the colourful, characterful market traders.
Food and drink
Rugby has a diverse food offering to suit all tastes and budgets. Choose from Fergusons, a fine dining restaurant featured in the Michelin guide, a fabulous selection of Asian cuisine, French, Mediteranean, Mexican and more. Why not pop into Rugby Tap, a micropub and specialist drinks store with locally brewed bottled and draught ales. The independent cafes and coffee shops offer choice for ladies who lunch, family trips to town and creative cafes such as DelishKitchen who diversify in evenings with movie nights and accoustic nights showcasing local talent.
It’s all about you
Talented experts in their field are all available in town for you to sit back relax, enjoy or put your trust in professional trades.
The family
Rugby Art Gallery and Museum offers many interactive sessions with plenty for the kids to do especially in school holidays, and Caldecott Park makes the town a family destination as well, with special events often run by the Park rangers. Rugby Theatre was established in 1949 and is one of the top ten amateur theatres in the country. Don’t miss the town centre events either, from Bikefest to the Rugby Festival of Culture.

Easy parking
You can park in Rugby for as little as £1 for 3 hours in John Barford car park, located close to the independent quarter, banks, estate agents and cafes.
Keep local businesses in business
For every £1 spent with a local, independent business, between 50p-70p circulates back into that local economy. Buying locally supports local traders, their suppliers and the people they depend on to run their businesses. Buying locally boosts the local economy, rebuilding confidence in the community, enabling local businesses to prosper and grow. Shopping online or out-of-town may save a little time or a little money, but for every £1 spent only 5p trickles back into the local economy.
This is just a selection of all that Rugby has to offer. To find out more visit www.enjoyrugby.co.uk or www.rugbytowncentre.co.uk

National Fish and Chip day Despite competition from rival takeaway dishes, fish and chips continue to be the nation’s favourite fast food, with around 382 million portions being consumed each year! Fried fish and chips were first served together around 1860 and ‘The Oldest Fish and Chip Shop in the World’ can be found in Yeadon near Leeds, which has been open since 1865. Cheap, readily accessible, hot and nutritious, fish and chips became a staple food among factory and mill workers in the industrial north, and continued as such during both World Wars, when it remained free of ration restrictions. Source of protein, fibre & vitamins Though often criticised as unhealthy, fish and chips are actually a valuable source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins, and when cooked properly, contain only around 10% fat.
How fish and chips are served can vary, still the most traditional has to be newspaper, but quality cardboard boxes are now a good alternative for your takeaway. Some shops cook in oil, others in lard or dripping and most now offer extras such as mushy peas, curry sauce, pickled eggs! National Fish and Chip Day is being held on Friday 3rd June to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish and bring together everyone involved in creating this iconic British food. Please visit www.nationalfishandchipday.org.uk for more details.

Get So Much More From Your Conservatory...
Your home
Conservatories look great and can be a lovely place to sit and relax, unfortunately the British climate often means they are either too cold or far to hot to sit comfortably. They can be expensive to heat and hard to cool down. So many people would love to make more of their conservatory. If you are one of those people then read on because Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions can transform your conservatory into a fabulous space which you can use comfortably all year round. Their cost effective value for money solution is to replace the roof - it’s no where near as expensive as you might think and is no where near as big a job as you would expect. By removing the noisy, energy inefficient roof that your conservatory currently has and replacing it with a lightweight treated bespoke timber frame, cladding it with durable slates or tiles that are 80% lighter than traditional ones, insulating it and finishing with a superb internal plaster finish the whole of your conservatory will feel like a brand new room - fit for many purposes - a new play room, an office, garden room or a lovely room to entertain friends.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Northampton area and manager
Trevor Skidmore agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Lift and divide daffodils and other springflowering bulbs plus herbaceous perennials. Snowdrops are normally very deep in the soil so take care when lifting or else they may come away from the bulb. We may still get late frosts so protect tender plants if possible Earth up potatoes, and plant any that you have left over. Thin out carrot & lettuce seedlings and water well, protect from carrot fly by using fleece or mesh. Start hardening off courgettes, pumpkins and tomatoes from your greenhouse ready for planting outside in June, brassicas and leeks can now be transplanted to their final position. Keep on tops of weeds with regular hoeing. Birds will have started nesting so please be aware before clipping hedges.

Make your garden colourful and bright by planting annual summer bedding plants in borders, containers and hanging baskets now that the threat of frost has passed. Keep all newly planted trees, shrubs and flowers well-watered whilst they establish. Water butts are a great way to collect rain water for this. Start to prune your plum or cherry trees now, you can thin out congested branches to make room for bigger and better fruits. Protect any developing fruits from birds and squirrels by placing netting around your plants. Feed plants that are fruiting in containers with a high potash liquid feed to keep plants healthy and productive. Peg down runners on your strawberry plants

to create more plants for next year. Newly seeded or turfed lawns will need watering during prolonged periods of dry weather. Use a selective weed killer to tackle weeds in lawns and feed your lawn with lawn fertiliser to encourage healthy green growth Pests and diseases: If white powdery mildew is found on plants then treat accordingly with fungicide. Act quickly when you see aphids on the underside of leaves - rub them off by hand or spray with an insecticide. Lilies may be affected by the scarlet lily beetle, remove and crush any you see and check for their sticky brown larvae on the underside of leaves. Prevent slugs attacking your young plants by various methods, slug pellets can be used but try and get pet friendly if possible. Some fun methods you can try are scooping out half orange, grapefruit or melon skins, lay them cut side down, or part-fill a jar with beer and sink into the soil, check and empty these every morning. Copper tape or a gel repellent can be placed around pots to create a barrier Encourage birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs, into your garden which will also help keep down the slug population .Removing fallen leaves during winter encourages birds to eat slug eggs that have been exposed. Privet, box and yew can now be clipped whilst they are in active growth. Turn the compost in your compost bins every month to keep it well aerated. Top bird baths up in hot weather. So get busy this spring and let’s hope last year’s shorts and t-shirts still fit for the summer !!
