‘Say it with flowers’! Have you ever thought that a simple bunch of flowers could carry a coded message? We give different flowers for different reasons at different moments in time, for a whole variety of reasons which often cannot be said; but flowers can say it all with beauty and with grace… I often get asked to include a specific flower into a bouquet or buttonhole, particularly when creating wedding flowers or celebration flowers. From the simplicity of a single blue forget-me-not to the overwhelming beauty of blousy peonies, our relationship with flowers can help us express emotions and help us communicate through them. Flowers can be so evocative – the ‘heady’ scent and mix of colours in a simple bunch of sweet peas can immediately transport us to a perpetually sunny summer in a traditional English garden!! No wonder, then, in the Language of Flowers sweet peas promise ‘Pure and Delicate Pleasures’. For thousands of years in every culture around the world meaning has been attributed to flowers and helps us remain connected with our ancestor’s deep-rooted familiarity with nature – something which has sadly been lost through our cosmopolitan modern life. I love the work of florist and grower, Shane Connolly, who designed the flowers for the 2011 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate’s bouquet was filled with Lily of the Valley for Trustworthy, Sweet William for Gallantry, Myrtle for Love and Marriage with Ivy for Fidelity. Shane’s new book ‘Discovering the Meaning of Flowers’ explores floral symbolism and the study of – Floriography. He tells us that the language of flowers

10

was ‘discovered’ in Turkey, at the Ottoman Court, when an Englishwoman came across a system of messages sent between the concubines in the Sultan’s harem. They exchanged decorated boxes containing single flowers which each carried a special meaning, to pass on information to each other under the noses of the Sultan’s guards. Lady Montagu immediately sent similar boxes to her friends with written decoding instructions and since then the seed was sown! Who would have thought that flowers could carry secret codes? Floriography soon blossomed alongside the growing passion for plants and plant hunting, and flowers were used widely to express emotions and feelings at a time when strict Victorian etiquette frowned upon open communication! Discrete exchanges of little flower posies, ‘nosegays’ or ‘tussie mussies’ carried many hidden meanings… Daisies for Innocence and Simplicity, Cow parsley for Fantasy, Majoram flowers for Blushes and Happiness, a Rose says I Love You, with a single Rose Leaf to ask Can I hope? To decline an unwanted proposal a single striped Garden Pink is a blunt Refusal Verbena says Endless Regret… I weep for you, but a beautiful Geranium symbolizes Friendship. I obviously need to be more careful I’m not breaking ‘The Official Secrets Act’ with my bouquets!! Happy Flowers! Sue x

Competition

Win a case of award winning local Saxby’s Cider Saxby’s Cider is made with love. Carefully selected English apples, slowly matured and expertly blended, just like good wine, Saxby’s Cider reflects the unique character of the season in which it is made. The cider is made using real fruit juices and real cider – no flavourings, syrups or nasties.

Saxby’s history

Philip the chief cider maker was originally a farmer but diversified into cider making back in 2011 when someone wrote to him asking if he had any apple trees as they would like to buy the fruit to make into juice. Philip planted some trees in order to sell the apples! While he was planning the new orchard, the thought occurred to him to have a go at trying to make his own cider. He visited the West of England and took some advice from cider makers down there. He tried out his first batch of cider on a homemade press using apples from neighbouring gardens and from the roadside… admittedly not the best but he had got the bug and his new orchard was planted with a blend of cider apples and dessert fruit – a blend still used to this day. The business has continued to grow since then and they still use apples from their two orchards as well as others from New Creation Farm in Nether Heyford and a Herefordshire farmer.

Why the pig logo?

As well as being a natural accompaniment to cider and apples. It is also part of Saxby’s heritage as their family used to have a business selling pork pies (a favourite of actor Roger Moore who used to eat them on the set of James Bond movies!) and sausages which traded for over 100 years but sadly closed in 2008 so the pig logo is a memento to those days. Saxby’s ethos is to produce quality, authentic cider using fruit from English trees embracing both old and modern techniques for a flavour that can be enjoyed by everyone. Cider doesn’t have to be large production line, bland or be too niche for the masses.

12

Village life – wake up it’s a beautiful morning! Appreciation

Convenience

Ever stopped to consider your own luck? Your good fortune at being so blessed as to have been born, or to have moved, into a village? If you looked out of your bedroom window this morning you would have seen the bright blue sky with the sun streaming through the clouds. You would have seen flowers swaying in the cool breeze. You would have heard the birds singing, the sheep bleating, and the bees buzzing. It could be any historic time - for here time stands still. Open your front door, breathe in that fresh air and smile. Appreciate village life.

Finishing your letter you can take the short walk to your village post box. It may take you no longer than five minutes, but in those five minutes you are sure to exchange pleasantries with your cheery neighbours. Some of you will be able to buy all your meat from the village butcher who gives you such a lot for your money. If that is not possible, then hopping into the car to take a drive there can offer lovely scenic views to admire. It may be practical to share lifts with neighbours to make a little outing to a slightly larger village nearby. You may be able to collect your cheeses from the local farm shop. Then, as locals often do, you could pick up your eggs from your kindly neighbour, who keeps chickens, continuing an age old tradition. Who would have thought living in a village would be so convenient?

Dedication To feel purpose each day you must dedicate yourself to a useful task, preferably also an enjoyable task. Living in a village inspires that feeling of time standing still. What better way to embrace this leisured pace of life than sitting down with a piping hot mug of tea, and writing your good friend a letter? Switch off from social media for a while and just write. Imagine the smile on that lovely lady’s face when she reads your handwritten letter. Dedicate yourself to this gentler pace of life you will find in a village.

30

Contentment Taking all the positives into account you cannot fail to be contented and happy to live forever in a village. It is a sort of bubble but that is no bad thing. It feels safe here. Please always remember: the grass is often brown or non-existent on the other side.

British food fortnight -

23rd September - 8th October 2017 British dishes? We all know a good British dish - roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, shepherds’ pie, spotted dick etc. Now ask your child to name a traditional British dish. Can they? It’s a sad fact that many British school children (and almost as many adults) have little or no knowledge of our culinary heritage in spite of it being rich and varied. In recent years we have become a multi-cultural society and we’ve happily adopted pasta from Italy, curry from India and noodles from China. While we should be proud of the fact that we’ve welcomed these new tastes, we seem to be in danger of forgetting or ignoring our own national and regional dishes.

Home produce Since its beginnings in 2002, British food fortnight has become THE opportunity for those who work in any aspect of food and drink, to come together and promote the benefits of buying and eating from our home produced British larder. It aims to encourage us to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and regional dishes and help our children to discover all that’s wonderful about British food. British food fortnight takes place during harvest time, which is the traditional time for celebrating food. Many schools are participating with the aim of teaching children how to prepare simple meals from fresh, seasonal ingredients. High street shops, farm shops and delicatessens will also be joining in, stocking British produce and running tasting sessions and cookery demonstrations. There will be special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre

32

cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs. With global warming rarely out of the news these days it’s reassuring to know that buying locally farmed, seasonal produce is the most eco-friendly choice too. It’s comforting to know that by buying British we’re doing our bit to save the planet. Taking care of children’s eyes from an early age Regular examinations The importance of regular eye examinations from an early onset cannot be over looked. During a child’s eye examination, an experienced optometrist will not only check if the child needs glasses but will also conduct a vital eye health check. Many ocular conditions amongst children can have the potential for permanent visual damage in the future if not caught as early as possible. Conditions such as lazy eyes, uncorrected refractive error are most common amongst children where if there is an imbalance between the eyes, the weaker eye has the potential to ‘switch off’ and will not develop properly. Attending regular eye examinations will minimise this likelihood and provide children with the bests start to educational, and functional development.

What if your child is not fluent with letters or reading? No problem – an optometrist will adapt every eye examination to suit your child’s ability, by using picture cards, matching games or many objective tests to obtain an accurate reading, the eye examination becomes an interactive game. Here at Anstee & Proctor Opticians in Daventry, we are an established independent practice with over 80 years experience testing eyes of all ages. We have several experienced optometrists who have specialist training with children in eye hospitals and provide a thorough interactive assessment of your child’s visual needs. It is advised that children have their eyes examined well before they start school to alleviate any potential for future problems. Children up to the age of 18 years in full time education are entitled to an NHS funded eye examination to provide every child with a healthy start to life.

Eyewear for sports Many children including those entering their teenage years or involved in sport activities can also explore the options around contact lens wear, sport specific eyewear and sunglasses. Children are at a higher risk of UV damage than adults as children often spend a considerable time outdoors with full exposure to harmful UV rays. A survey by the Eyecare Trust estimates that 80 percent of lifetime UV exposure happens by the age of 18 years old therefore a good quality pair of sunglasses will help protect your child’s eyes. At Anstee & Proctor we offer a range of services for all children to suit their needs, and urge every child who has not had an eye examination to be booked in for session of fun and games!

Getting ready for the next big adventure! Helping children settle in at secondary school As adults, it is easy for us to rationalise the scary move to a new school in context of our experience and say ‘it will all work out in the end’. However, for the child it is massive change so we need to be careful not to trivialise it. It can be a very stressful time and to help we need to recognise that.

What can you do to help in this situation for the first month or so?

Imagine if you were:

Focus on and discuss the positives such as trips and sports events.

Starting a new job with a lot more responsibility and longer hours. Your new job has different duties that you have not done before in a new workplace that is so huge you actually fear getting lost. Nothing in the new job is anything like the old one and you have no friends. Oh, and let’s not forget that your friends have heard that some of the older workers in your new workplace will put your head down the toilet and steal your money. For a child moving to secondary education not only is all this happening in their world but they are trying to deal with it with a variable emotional maturity level, a wild and often over active imagination and, horror of horrors, potentially the early stages of puberty.

50

Practice the route to school and include ‘getting lost’ strategies such as spotting landmarks and the names of major roads.

Hand over some responsibility by asking them to create their own uniform list or get a little ahead in new subjects. This will generate some ownership of their new life. Listen, discuss and reassure, not just about the big things such as travel and lesson content but the small things as well. For an already worried 11-year-old realising they don’t know the right way to do their tie can be a huge issue. We know that this stress will pass in a few weeks but that is forever for a child. Empathy and positive attitude to the school will go a long way to helping your child settle in. Of course, if you find they don’t then you need to speak to the school but remember kids need time to adjust. Kevin Robinson , 13 Media Arts

It’s all Winston’s fault

The story of Neneview Dairy – the Little Cheesery with the Big Plans Chris and Geoff Twell moved to Redlands Farm, near Stanwick in 2011 and almost immediately rebuilt the farmhouse. The next job was the overgrown orchard. A friend suggested that they get some goats, enter Misty, Mo and Winston. Three goats led to 96 and it was decided that maybe they should learn to make cheese. Neneview Dairy was born! However, there’s plenty of soft goat’s cheese about and Chris and Geoff wanted to be different and make hard cheese. They consulted the internet, as you do, and found the British Goat Society who helped them achieve their aim. Goats like to be warm and dry so housing had to be provided. They now had 96 goats ‘in kid’ and found a second hand milking parlour and rented a trailer called ‘The Little Cheesery – Making Cheese Wherever You Please!’ This had begun life in India where a Derby firm had sent it to provide cheese for the locals. It turned out the locals would prefer tea to cheese! So the trailer was returned to the UK – India’s loss, the Twell’s gain! Chris and Geoff obtained a mentor – John Knox from Kerrygold (you may have heard of them!) – who sent them on a cheese making course in Nantwich. They had a problem though. To take the course they needed to bring 2,500 litres of goat’s milk with them. Geoff made a phone call to the manager of the local Waitrose. Amazingly, they could provide this amount of milk. However, it would come in 2 litre bottles! So, laden with milk they made their way to Nantwich, took an age to empty all the bottles, and became proficient goat’s cheese makers.

52

Neneview Dairy was founded in 2013 and now produces 11 different cheeses, mostly with names associated with the history of Northamptonshire, the boot and shoe trade in particular – Cobbler’s Choice, Skyver, Togglers, and Hobnail amongst others. The cheese is made using mostly local ingredients (rennet and culture has to be bought in from elsewhere) still in The Little Cheesery, which is a self-contained cheese making facility complete with white wellies at the door. In 2015 they won the Carlsberg Food and Drink Award for the New Local Product of the Year which opened doors for them to improve and expand their business. There are now 150 goats at Neneview Dairy, all named (this year, all names begin with ‘D’!) and business is brisk with the cheese selling as quickly as they can make it. The cheeses are sold in several local outlets as well as to some wholesalers. Gift packs are produced at Christmas which make fabulous presents. Geoff and Chris are available for talks, if anyone is interested in this fascinating subject and company. There is no charge but they do ask that they are allowed to bring and sell their cheese whilst with you. Take a look at their website if you’d like to contact them or for more information on where you can buy this amazing cheese (we have tasted it- it’s delicious!) See them at the Northampton Winter Food Festival, too, at The County Ground on November 11th and 12th. www.neneviewdairy.co.uk

Enjoy a fruitful autumn at Greenacres Friday café dates: • • • • •

1st September 15th September 29th September 13th October 27th October

Autumn Food and Craft Fayre Sunday 22nd October - 12pm to 4 p.m.

Come along and join us ! We have had a very successful summer this year at Green Acres in our vegetable garden and polytunnels. They have been keeping us busy with a bumper crop of fruit and vegetables which we have making into a range of jams, pickles and chutneys. The number of visitors to our fortnightly Friday café continues to grow week-on-week. Our seasonal menus give three choices of home-cooked dishes using the fresh produce from the gardens. Customers can also purchase our produce to enjoy at home. This year we have been providing ‘ready meals’ for the residents of Warwick Court, a sheltered housing complex for the elderly in Daventry. Meals are cooked on site, heat-sealed and delivered to the residents so they can simply pop them into the microwave at their convenience. We are now looking to develop our range of meals to provide greater variety of dishes.

As the new school term begins at the start of September we are looking forward to welcoming new students to work with us, both from the primary and secondary schools in the local area. We offer schools the chance to bring groups of children for day visits where they learn where their food comes from and the chance to learn some cooking skills. Many students attend Green Acres one or two days a week for confidence building and learning social and work skills. Adult learning classes have been another great success at Green Acres. Classes have been held on artisan breadmaking, willow weaving, introduction to vegan cooking and pottery for beginners. Keep a look out for events on our web-site, Facebook or Twitter.

Autumn courses: • Willow weaving - Sunday 17th September – full day course • Entertaining with seasonal produce – Wednesday 20th September – evening course • Jams, pickles and chutneys – Saturday 7th October – half day course • Willow weaving – Saturday 7th October – full day course

Vintage 40s Canal event celebrates tenth year Stoke Bruerne, 10am-5pm Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September

Centred on the Canal Museum, Stoke Bruerne’s Village at War Weekend is all set to deliver yet another opportunity to experience life in the 40s in a glorious setting on the idyllic Grand Union Canal, and this year, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of this award winning event we will be bringing you even more of your favourite vintage entertainers. Glamorous singer Lola Lamour and George Formby (aka Paul Casper) will be joining forces with Perfect Vintage, Betty Bluebird, Ruzzit Buzzit and Pearly King Rosie Rose to keep both the troops and public entertained royally. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be back in the skies with a fly past on both days and Churchill, Field Marshall Montgomery and George VI will be kept busy delivering rousing speeches and inspecting the troops. On the water, a number of historic boats, some in wartime livery, many of whom played important roles carrying vital supplies for the war effort, will complete the colourful scene and our very own HMS Charlie will be offering boat trips into the mouth of the two hundred year old Blisworth Canal Tunnel.

58

On dry land visitors can expect to learn how to Lindy Hop and Jive at our afternoon tea dances, watch fashion parades, browse a collection of military and civilian vehicles, watch exciting firepower demonstrations and skirmishes, experience air raids and get a chance to obtain rationed goods in the black market, including seamed nylon stockings for the wife or girlfriend. Living history groups and individual re-enactors such as policemen, spivs, air raid wardens, the Home Guard, American GI’s, the free French and Land Army girls will be out in force to show visitors what life was like in wartime Britain. Be sure to dust off and bring along Great Grandad’s gas mask - you never know, you might need it! Admission is £7.50 per adult (under 16s free). Parking in official event car parks is included. The Village at War Weekend is organised by The Friends of the Canal Museum Charity (Reg. No. 1121146) and any surplus goes towards their work supporting The Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne.
