Welcome to The Village Emporium Were you like us taken with David Attenboroughs Blue Planet? Out and about in the villages, it never amazes us to see the amount of litter, mostly plastic, in grass verges. Luckily many of our villages have days when teams of people meet to clear up. Some of our local businesses are also helping with the No plastic is fantastic initiative and this issue we have focused on some ideas you may not have considered to help the environment.
5 Your home 27 Your garden 37 Out & about 46 Whats on? 51 Look good, feel good 64 Your family
Finally, this issue features ‘Organic September’ with a selection of organic products and recipes which will use up the veg still left in your plot or found in the hedgerows. Many people are now choosing
organic fruit and vegetables, wanting to avoid the chemical sprays used in intensive farming. Whether you are concerned about your personal health, or that of wildlife and the planet, we hope this issue will give you some ideas on how to do your bit. Every little helps!

Step back in time…. Local to you
Dunchurch The year is 1605 Whispers in dark corners. A whiff of treason in the air. Rebels, traitors, terrorists. They met in secret. The plot had to be well formulated and highly confidential. The risks were severe. To fail meant the punishment of a slow, drawn out, gallows death. Each man felt his own mortality hanging in the balance. November 5th. That was the date that had been fixed upon. The day they would lay explosives beneath the Houses of Parliament... with the aim of causing mass destruction to both the building, and the status quo!
Coaching inns and secret plots Located at the crossroads of the well travelled coaching routes between London and Birmingham, and Oxford and Leicester, Dunchurch has always been an important staging post. In the seventeenth century there were reputedly 27 coaching inns in Dunchurch to cater for
16
weary travellers. Two of these inns still remain to this day – the ‘Dun Cow’ and the ‘Green Man’. The village of Dunchurch is, famously, the place where the Gunpowder Plotters stayed whilst formulating their plans. The place where they lodged was, at the time, called the ‘Red Lion inn’, and is now a private residence called ‘Guy Fawkes House’. The plotters stayed at this inn whilst they awaited news of their ring-leader Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up the houses of Parliament. As soon as they learnt that the plan had failed they scarpered…
Caught red-handed Guy Fawkes was not so lucky. He was caught at the scene the day before the intended explosion and locked away awaiting trial. The trial was a formality, the prosecution already knew that he had no defence to speak of and was in very hot water. On 31st January 1606, standing at the gallows, having been found guilty of possession of explosives and intent to use them to cause harm,

Step back in time…. Local to you conspiring against Parliament, intent to cause damage to state buildings, and plotting to kill statesmen, he flung himself off the ledge to his death. He was desperate to avoid the traditional method of execution for traitors in seventeenth century England, which was to be hung, drawn and quartered. However after he had leapt to his death, breaking his neck on impact, the King’s guards still had his body ‘quartered’ and his remains sent to the “four corners of the kingdom” as a warning to all rebels never to rise up against Parliament.
Remember, remember, the 5th of November The date of the planned explosion, 5th November, is remembered to the present day with ‘celebratory’ bonfires and fireworks. Often a rag-doll ‘Guy’ figure is placed on the bonfire as a symbol of this famous rebel. In fact the tale of ‘Guy Fawkes’, the activist who attempted to blow up the houses of Parliament, is so famous in history and culture hundreds of years on that he could arguably be described as a martyr – either that or a stark warning to citizens seeking to change the status quo.
A place of charm and character The village of Dunchurch is well worth a visit. It is quaint and picturesque with one of the local pubs (the ‘Dun Cow’) displaying memorabilia and paintings depicting the story of Guy Fawkes. The village is steeped in history with many of the buildings dating back to Tudor times, and some being thatched cottages. Walk in the footsteps of the Plotters and try to imagine the world as they would have known it, seeing it through their eyes – perhaps they were terrorists? Or maybe just freedom fighters…? After absorbing the fascinating history of Dunchurch, you could explore slightly further afield and enjoy the traditional ‘chocolate box’ village of Ashby-StLedgers. Rumour has it that a large part of the plotting took place in this small but pretty Northamptonshire village. The band of plotters are said to have been led by Robert Catesby who owned the manor house here. The conspirators meetings apparently took place in the gatehouse to the manor house which can still be seen today from the road – another connection to the famous Gunpowder plot and certainly worth a visit.

Make your magazines green Enjoyed your magazine? Here are some tips to make it last even longer. Get a shredder and make pet bedding or filler for packaging Get crafty – Rip up the pages and use them for decoupage projects. Why not cover empty bottles or bowls to make unique peices of art? Pass them on to someone else to read Make your own Christmas tree Break with tradition and make your own Christmas tree out of rolls of newspaper. You’ll need a strong cardboard tube to stick them to, but it’s surprisingly easy to put together once you’ve sourced one. Shoe deodoriser Keep those trainers smelling fresh as a daisy by sprinkling some baking powder onto some paper and scrunching into balls. Place them in your shoes overnight and by morning they’ll have soaked up any moisture and odour. De-grease your oven Don’t waste your cleaning cloths or sponges to de-grease your oven - it can ruin your cloths! Simply use scrunched up newspaper to get rid of oil and fat before washing. It works a treat.

Create some handy trivets or coasters Make pin-wheels and glue them together to make a square or circle shapes. Make your own bunting Bunting can look great in any colour of pattern - sometimes the more colourful and random the better! Cut your shapes out and use twine to attach them all together. I find using a punch hole to punch in hole and weaving the twine in and out works well. Make your own seedling pots They’re great for small plants and when they’re ready you can even plant the paper pots straight into the ground once the plants are ready to go outside. Recycle If none of these ideas appeal please make sure you put your used magazines into the correct recycling bin so they can be turned back into paper which can be used all over again!
Green printers We use printers that have a genuine commitment to making a positive contribution to the environment. At their head office in Kettering, they have achieved ISO 14001 accreditation, FSC certification and commit to strict energy saving and recycling targets.

Foraging for the hedgerow harvest Foraging is an excellent way to experience new flavours and enjoy the great outdoors. There’s a wealth of delicious edibles growing all around us, even right on our doorstep – and it’s free! Autumn is a time of abundance for foragers, and one of the most common sights in the hedgerows at this time of year are the red berries, or haws, of the Hawthorn. If you are going to harvest these, wear heavy duty gloves as those thorns are vicious! The seeds within the haws, like those of many other fruits, contain a cyanide inducing chemical, so it’s only the flesh we’ll be using. The best way to process is to heat the berries in just enough water to cover them, then remove from the heat when the skins are well split, and then mash through a sieve. The flesh has exceptionally high levels of pectin, making it a great asset to the jam making enthusiast and excellent for setting fruit leathers. However, one of the nicest ways to use Hawthorn is to create a delicious savoury ketchup.
Ingredients 500g haw berries 300ml water 300ml cider or white wine vinegar 175g sugar Salt Black pepper
Method 1. Remove the leaves and stalks from haw berries and rinse 2. Put the haw berries, water and vinegar into a large pan. Bring the mixture to the boil, then simmer for 30 minutes. The skins on the berries should split
26
3. Remove from the heat and pour the contents into a sieve suspended over a container. Push the berries around to push as much of the flesh through the sieve as possible, but keeping the stones in the sieve 4. Clean your original pan and transfer the sieved pulp back into it 5. Add the sugar and season well with salt and pepper 6. Bring the mixture to the boil then simmer for 5-10 mins until the mixture is thick and syrupy, and the sugar has dissolved 7. Transfer to sterilised jars To add some more kick, add finely chopped chillies or garlic at stage five. This mixture can sometimes get very thick, so jars from which it can be spooned from are better than bottles. If the jars are correctly sterilised, the ketchup should keep for several months if unopened. Complete and utter rubbish! Britain is one of the most litter-blighted countries in Europe. 30 million tonnes of rubbish are removed from the UK every year at a cost of £1bn - The Highways Agency alone clears 700,000 sacks of litter from England’s road network every year.
Research published recently in Keep Britain Tidy’s Journal of Local Environmental Quality showed that millions of small mammals – voles and shrews - were dying after being enticed into bottles and cans thrown on to grass verges.
I was driving back along the Fosse Way the other day and got held up behind a tractor cutting the verges, which is a necessary job but sadly uncovers all the ghastly litter that has been discarded from vehicles. The mower was doing a very efficient job of cutting up much of the dreaded plastic into even smaller pieces, which the wind was then distributing even further afield!
We need to get the message out there that being a ‘tosser’ is socially unacceptable and, regardless of who throws the rubbish, if it comes out of your vehicle you are responsible.”
One of the places this rubbish ends up in is our hedgerows, which are so important as they quietly help the local countryside environment by reducing soil loss through wind and water erosion as well as providing sustainable drainage in towns and reducing air pollution. Above all, wherever located, hedgerows provide a vital habitat for wildlife. Unbelievably, protection of our hedgerows wasn’t introduced until 1997. Although regulations are in place, many deemed ‘important’ because of their age, length and biodiversity can be removed without consultation, because planning permission for development overrides their protection. So with the amount of natural hedgerows diminishing at such an alarming rate we need to help protect them in whatever way we can (from CPRE ‘Better Protection for our Hedgerows’). From Keep Britain Tidy: “The mindless act of tossing plastic bottles and fast-food wrappers out of car windows is doing damage to our environment and our wildlife.
28
From April 2018, the owner of a vehicle can be fined up to £150 if rubbish is seen being thrown out of a car window. Let’s all be more aware, more mindful; take our rubbish home - don’t throw it out of the car, van or lorry into our hedgerows and don’t be afraid to remind or report others if they do so. We need to change behaviour by spotlighting litter on a daily basis! Show your support for www.keepbritaintidy.org who work tirelessly with people, businesses, local authorities and government to educate, innovate and inspire – improving the environment on everyone’s doorstep. No plastic is fantastic! Since the last episode of Blue Planet aired in December 2017 businesses small and large in the UK and the rest of the world have started to make a conscious effort to reduce plastic and waste to help protect our planet. Reduce – Reuse – Recycle This British Campaign has encouraged one of our regular advertisers – Hannah from Napton Village Stores to introduce a range of every day products by local lady Francis whose company Nature and My produces items which replace current plastic ones – hair brushes, toothbrushes, reusable drinking straws, coffee cups, water bottles, lunch boxes – all made from plastic free materials and are totally biodegradable. A plastic toothbrush once disposed stays on our earth for 200 years, a bamboo toothbrush breaks down in seven days and completely disappears!
Changes in store Napton Village Stores are now offering 20p off all takeaway hot drinks when customers bring their own drinks cups, their fresh baked bread, filled rolls, homemade cakes, hot pastries, loose fruit & veg are all sold in paper bags. Customers who stay in to eat and drink have china mugs and plates and steel cutlery – no waste is created at all. Next steps are to change to biodegradable straws and take away cutlery – it’s a
34
journey that we all need to go on. The range by Nature and My is prominently featured in their gift shop area.
Eco-friendly products Nature and MY produces ethical, natural and ecofriendly products suitable for the whole family that are both good for our health and the environment. Their range includes biodegradable coffee mugs and lunch boxes made with organic rice husk and the Europe’s first and only 64% plant-based bamboo toothbrushes. Whether you are a hotel looking for more eco-friendly toiletries, or a business looking for sustainable stationary, Nature and MY will source it. They already produce ecofriendly hotel vanity kits, seeded pencils, pens and paper, hand-made soaps and toiletries

Feature Plastic Oceans Charity Nature and MY donate 10p of every toothbrush purchased to Plastic Oceans Charity which is a global network of independent not-for-profits and charitable organizations, united in their aims to change the world’s attitude towards plastic within a generation. There are currently four Plastic Oceans Foundation entities: United States, Canada, Hong Kong and United Kingdom serving both the ocean and the public. Plastics are not biodegradable and are damaging our environment. Little changes make a BIG difference. One of these changes is something you have probably never given a second thought to...your toothbrush. We all use them, they’re an essential part of our lifestyle, so there’s no hiding from them.
Ground breaking changes Another regular in the Village Emporium is Daily Bread Co-operative in Northampton who want to credit Sir David Attenborough (at least partly) with starting something that will change the way their co-operative works for many years to come, and they hope that, as with endeavours in the past like organic foods and fairly traded products, they will be counted among the first to bring to the business world a ground breaking change that will better our whole industry:-
Refilling station The first major step for Daily Bread Co-operative has been to introduce a refilling station for some of the cleaning and body care products they offer, and the feedback so far has been amazing, both from those using the service and those just happy to see it available and planning to use it in the future. The company are looking at drastically overhauling their packaging, and are carefully investigating new, more biodegradable packaging options. Daily Bread Co-operative have discovered a material called Natureflex, which is similar to the plastic bags we use in that it is flexible and transparent, but which is actually made from wood pulp and is completely biodegradable. This is an excellent starting point for them to explore further.
Daily Bread Co-operative already use cotton bags, Jute bags and paper bags with more alternatives being investigated. They use 100% renewable electricity energy and to reduce food waste they reduce the price to sell if close to end of dates.
Bamboo clothing Local business in Daventry, Sheaf Street Health Store is a great supporter of ecofriendly products looking to the future. They are now selling a clothing range made from bamboo!! Bamboo is one of the coolest fabrics to be wearing in this tropical weather. Pop into Sheaf Street Health Store to peruse their full range of gorgeous certified organic bamboo clothing.... for men, women and babies. Beautifully packaged so make great gifts too. Also new into Sheaf Street Health Store are amazing reusable cotton beeswax food wraps made by BeeBee Wraps. A great alternative to plastic food coverings. BeeBee Wraps are made from organic cotton, local beeswax, natural tree resin and organic jojoba oil, all of which will break down on your compost heap and return to nature without a trace.
Recycling rubbish In June the store organised the ‘Take up our Trash Art Challenge’ for Daventry Arts Festival encouraging budding artists to transform everyday non-perishable household rubbish into a piece of art and bring it along to Sheaf Street Health Store to be judged by the Mayor of Daventry, a very successful competition. Discovering 78 Derngate The Cultural Quarter of Northampton includes the WorldFamous Leather & Shoe Museum, Royal & Derngate Theatre, NN Contemporary Art Gallery, Errol Flynn Film House and the impressive 78 Derngate, where you can view the only house designed and modified in England by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the most famous architects and creative designers of the twentieth century. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was hugely influenced by the major design movement of Art Nouveau and was an influential figure in the growth of Art Deco and Modernism. The Georgian terraced house at 78 Derngate had been built in 1815, but the interior was not extensively remodelled by Mackintosh until 1916, just over a hundred years later. It is the only house in England designed and renovated by Mackintosh and became his last major architectural project and commission, before his death, twelve years later, at the age of sixty. Now meticulously restored, the stunning Mackintosh interior décor attracts many thousands of visitors, to this multi award-winning visitor attraction. The refurbishment had been commissioned by Northampton businessman and model maker, Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke. Visitors can join an informative and entertaining guided tour which takes about 90 minutes, learning about the house, design pieces, Mackintosh and the inspirational Bassett – Lowke. Mackintosh is reputed to have said, “There should be nothing in your home, that is older than yourself! It got me thinking about my own home!

The rooms include a striking black room: the HallLounge, with a yellow-stencilled wallpaper motif of inverted triangles and a stairwell panel of twenty panels of yellow triangular shapes, single thin black lines and seven squared panels across the bottom, all with light illuminating and enhancing the forms. The guest bedroom with its decoration of bold ultramarine, black and white stripes is striking. For many guests, it may have been difficult sleeping in such a room. The stripes running down the wall, across the ceiling with similar matching curtains was designed to give the impression of a four-poster bed. Despite this, Author George Bernard Shaw managed to sleep in the room on his only visit to the house, because as he remarked, “I always sleep with my eyes closed`. There was a small bust of the playwright, celebrating the authors visit to the house, in the hall-lounge. The dining room is very different, but Mackintosh was responsible for the design of the whole room including the small mantle clock and a small round table with a circular selection of marble patterns. The border in the master bedroom is a familiar Mackintosh stylised rose design and there is a large American washbasin in the corner, with hot and cold running water. The large bathroom includes an Edwardian shower, deep bath and most unusual for the time, a hot towel rail. I thought the walls were covered in small mosaic tiles, until I realised it was a very convincing waterproof wallpaper.

Bassett – Lowke introduced all the latest modern technology into the house including central heating and indoor plumbing. It was in the kitchen where an electric oven, grill toaster and a kitchen range competed for attention. The rear of the house features the two elevated balconies which would have overlooked open meadows when built in 1916. The garden today is a bright open space with seating and benches for when the weather allows visitors to sit outside. Between 1964 and 1993 the house was used by Northampton High School for Girls, firstly as offices then classrooms, before their move to Hardingstone. Much of the design work had been painted over or covered up, before a major renovation programme started in 2002 to return the house to Mackintosh’s original design. After eighteen months of restoration, the house was opened to the public in late 2003. The house is also a special meeting venue with rooms for business, corporate events and functions, a stylish design shop, visitor reception and administration offices. Inside numbers 80/82 Derngate there is a wonderful restaurant serving afternoon tea and exhibition space in the light-filled galleries. If you are interested in the arts or simply want to visit an historic town house, art gallery or fancy a bite to eat or a cuppa in a stylish café/restaurant, I would fully recommend you discover 78 Derngate at the earliest opportunity on your next visit to Northampton. 750g organic beetroots 300g small to medium organic waxy potatoes 1 head of organic radicchio a few sprigs of fresh thyme a few sprigs of fresh sage 3 cloves of garlic 1 unwaxed organic lemon 125ml organic white wine 125ml hot organic vegetable stock For the gremolata a small bunch of fresh parsley ½ a clove of garlic 1 red chilli the zest of 1 large unwaxed orange
Method Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Fill and boil a kettle. Peel the beetroots and use a food processor or a mandolin to finely slice them. Scatter them in a deep baking dish approximately 20cm × 25cm. Slice the potatoes in the same way and scatter them over the beetroots. Shred the radicchio as you would a lettuce – avoiding and discarding the root – and add this to the tray too. Pick the leaves off the stalks of the thyme and sage, slice the garlic and add to the dish, then grate over the zest of the lemon and season well with salt and pepper. Toss everything together, then use your hands to press and push everything level in the dish. Pour over the white wine and the hot stock – the liquid should come about halfway up the potatoes – and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Mighty Magnus’ Medicine The village of Brixworth has rallied in support of a brave six-year-old fighting a rare childhood cancer. The story of Magnus, diagnosed last Christmas with stage 4 Neuroblastoma - a highly aggressive cancer affecting children under 5, has inspired friends, neighbours and the wider community in the Northamptonshire village to help fund life-saving treatment not available in the UK. A host of fund raising events have been held and are planned for the year, including at Brixworth Primary School where six-year-old Magnus is a pupil. The Rotary e-club of district 1070 has also taken the charity under their wing and recently organised a Race Night which raced over £2000 Meanwhile local tradespeople are generously donating a percentage of their income. So far, the Mighty Magnus Medicine Fund has raised over £30,000 – and Magnus’s parents Kate and Sandy are overwhelmed by the support and generosity. Kate says: ‘This has been such a tough eight months for us since Magnus’ diagnosis because his treatment has been so intensive, but we could not have got through it all without the amazing kindness and support from so many people, including complete strangers who have been so generous and taken Magnus to their hearts.’ In January Magnus was admitted to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham where scans showed he had a large abdominal tumour and like many other children with Neuroblastoma the disease had already spread to his bones and bone marrow. He started chemotherapy the following day. Approximately one hundred
50
children in the UK will be diagnosed every year with Neuroblastoma, and of those around half will be in the high-risk category. Amazingly Magnus has responded as well as can be hoped to the treatment so far; an embodiment of the spirit and strength of the Viking warriors that he so loves. For his Viking-themed sixth birthday party in April Magnus was so determined not to disappoint his guests that he received a blood transfusion in the morning to give him the energy to conquer the day. The Mighty Magnus Medicine Fund was created in May to raise funds for essential treatment not offered by the NHS. At the time a vital drug required for treatment Dinutuximab Beta – was not available and the family faced the prospect of having to fund this themselves. Thankfully the NHS has now since advised that it will fund this drug following a public campaign. This has come as a massive relief for Magnus’ family and the other families who were facing months of uncertainty. But, in order to give Magnus the best chance of survival and avoid the high risk or relapse, he will need access to the latest and most innovative treatments currently only available in the US and elsewhere. Mighty Magnus Medicine Fund would love to hear from you if you can assist in any way with organising events or fund raising. Recipe
Organic September
Organic beetroot & cherry tomato Ingredients
300 g large organic beetroot, topped, tailed and cut into 2 cm wedges (skin-on) 2 teaspoons organic olive oil 300 g organic new potatoes 3 eggs 1⁄2 small organic red onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons organic extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon wholegrain mustard sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 slices organic rye bread, cut lengthways 1 garlic clove, peeled and halved handful of rocket 12 organic cherry tomatoes, halved 1 spring onion, finely sliced
Method
Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F) Gas 4. In a roasting tray, toss the beetroot wedges with the olive oil and season. Roast for 30–35 minutes or until tender and the skins are beginning to blister. Turn the oven off, but leave the beetroot in to keep warm. In a saucepan, cover the potatoes generously with cold, salted water. Bring to the boil and simmer briskly for 10 minutes. Add the eggs to the pan and simmer for another 6–7 minutes. Remove the eggs and plunge into ice-cold water. Cook the potatoes for a further few minutes until tender. Drain, then roughly cut in half while still warm. Combine the potatoes with the red onion, 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and the wholegrain mustard; season and set aside. Toast the bread and rub generously with the cut side of the garlic. Divide the toasted rye bread and drizzle over another tablespoon olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Place a few leaves of rocket on top of the toast, then potatoes, beetroot and tomatoes. Finish with the softboiled eggs and the spring onions, scattered over. Organic September Get set for Organic September, a celebration of all things organic, organised by the Soil Association, the UK’s foremost organic certification body. Many people are now choosing organic fruit and vegetables, wanting to avoid the chemical sprays used in intensive farming. Whether you are concerned about your personal health, or that of wildlife and the planet, organic farming offers a kinder way to work with the land. The term ‘organic’ is now highly regulated, therefore growers and producers cannot claim organic without certification, which ensures the crops are guaranteed free from nasty chemical pesticides and fertilisers, but are also non-genetically-modified and non-irradiated. Organic foods and products can sometimes cost a little more, but as well as the chemicals you’ll be avoiding, you can also get more nutrition for your money. An international team of experts led by Newcastle University has shown that organic crops are up to 60% higher in a number of key antioxidants than conventionally-grown ones. Analysing 343 studies into the compositional differences between organic and conventional crops, the team found that a switch to eating organic fruit, vegetable and cereals – and food made from them – would provide additional antioxidants equivalent to eating between 1-2 extra portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
